Facebook is a specific platform and not like a list which can be read through any number of platforms.  Using Facebook requires a belief in the platform, the organisation, their ultimate longevity and their definition of the platform as a means of communication (incorporating how that may change at some future point).  Moving to Facebook I think will lose some people here, perhaps pick others but will they engage in the same way?

I'm not keen for a switch to Facebook even though I too only lurk on the list but I do understand why it may be preferable to others.  However why not use both list and Facebook?  I've run a research related weblog for quite a few years now and I use plugins for the weblog that push everything to a Facebook and Twitter page.  Perhaps what's needed is migration to a better mailing list that might have to capability to do something like this; it would please everybody and as social media sites come and go can adapt.
