Modular Collaboration: Call for participation

Modular Collaboration, led by Daniel Neumann, is a free five day
workshop in which participants will work together to create individual
works under an overall theme that will culminate in a live performance
or installation in which all the works are presented simultaneously as
part of a larger piece utilizing the full capacity of Diapason’s
special multi-channel sound systems.

Modular collaboration enacts non-hierarchical and decentralized forms
of organization that question the concept of the single composing
genius. In development since 2006, Modular Collaboration draws
inspiration from works with open scores, group improvisation and the
practices of relational aesthetics– emphasis of process,
performativity, openness, social contexts, transitivity and the
production of dialogue over the closure of traditional modernist
objecthood, visuality and hyper- individualism .

The workshop will begin with the development of a theoretical
theme/question. Each participant will then refer to that theme in
composing her/his own module. Individual modules will have a unique
internal logic in approaching the general theme. In the process of the
development the participants give each other feedback to help each
find her/his position in the overall system.

Workshop dates: July 26th - 30th 2010, with a performance/presentation
on July 30th
Location: Diapason, 882 Third Ave, Brooklyn, NY
Deadline for submission: July 10th 2010
Please send submissions with a short bio and a work sample to: neumann
at alulatonserien dot de

The workshop is free of charge!

Diapason is a listening space that gives artists and audiences the
opportunity to make and experience sound art. Through the exploration of
active and varied modes of listening Diapason seeks to engage artists and
the public in a dialogue about the place of contemporary music and sound
practice in a broader cultural context. For artists, both established and
emerging, Diapason provides a space at once accessible and technologically
advanced, fostering the creation of unique works that investigate the
implications of new sound practices. For audiences Diapason provides an
optimal listening environment and access to artists, encouraging personal
exploration of one’s relationship to sound and listening.
