[Composition 00055]

[Composition 00055 is in ten parts and is based on samples of the media theorist Marshall McLuhan, and is an reworking of an earlier project entitled Genius Loci. Genius Loci was commissioned by Simon Poulter for the McLuhan's Message conference held at the Watershed Art Centre, Bristol, UK, 06.10.2011. The ten parts of the original composition were one-minute long, and consisted of spoken word sound-bites from McLuhan accompanied by the sound of the sample having been synthesised using granular sampling. Literally, McLuhan was accompanied by a mutated digital version of himself. In the revised version of Composition 00055, the McLuhan quotes have been removed, leaving only drone elements that are based on the synthesised samples. McLuhan has become a digitalised ghost, an amorphous and undefined identity within the composition.]

[Composition 00056 is in three parts, and uses phase distortion synthesis. There is a base element that repeats for all of the sections, and consists of a single four-bar sound followed by twelves bars of silence. The composition slowly builds, and an eight-bar sound is added in part two, This second sound is a semitone higher than the first, and so a minimalist ‘melody’ is created between the two element. A 256-bar drone is added in part three. However, the texture remains sparse as the drone slowly increases and decreases in volume.]

[Composition 00057 is in three parts, and is based on a computerised voice saying ‘Ich tanze nicht’ (I don’t dance). In part one, the speech from the female robot as been fragmented to a single phoneme ‘te’, and this continues throughout parts two and three. A low pulsating drone is added in part two, and this gives a sci-fi/cyberpunk quality to the composition. In the third and final part, the whole of the text ‘Ich tance nicht’ is heard in full, with the last ’t’ of ‘nicht’ sounding at the same time as the ‘te’ sound.]
