[codecraft] codecraft chat

Ok, thanks, I'm asking everyone in #sourcefu on freenode how they feel
about switching to Gitter: http://irclog.greptilian.com/sourcefu/2018-11-17

Here's what I've written so far:

sourcefu.com expires in 11 days on November 28th and once again I'm
thinking about letting it expire. And shutting down this channel. I still
like the idea, a software development community with an emphasis on
friendliness, transparency, and open source, but I think we could have a
better brand, a better name.

One idea I have is to relaunch on Gitter with something like "codecraft" in
the name, as I wrote about at
http://or8.net/pipermail/codecraft/2018-October/000249.html

Gitter has an IRC gateway that I use all the time.

Or I could relaunch on freenode under a new name, I suppose, but freenode
doesn't seem to appreciate public logging very much.
https://freenode.net/policies#public-logging starts with "If you are
considering publishing channel logs, think it through."

So Gitter seems like a better cultural fit for me. I feel more aligned with
the amount of transparency Gitter promotes.

On a related note, I proposed a talk with the title "Transparency in chat
culture: Gitter vs. IRC, Slack, and the rest" for next year's LibrePlanet.
"The culture of transparency Gitter brings to chat is healthy for free
software. IRC, XMPP, Slack, and almost every other chat system encourage
decision making behind closed doors."

http://wiki.greptilian.com/talks/ideas/transparency-in-chat-culture-gitter-vs-irc-slack-and-the-rest/

I'm open to other chat platforms that have a similar culture of
transparency, but they're hard to find. Matrix/Riot seems like a contender
but this issue I opened is a deal breaker for me: "URL for an arbitrary day
of history and navigation for next and previous days"
https://github.com/vector-im/riot-web/issues/7677

We have this already in this channel, of course:

swiched from freenode to Gitter (again, there's an IRC gateway I use all
the time), would you come along?
