portugal is our theme this week, as this edition of framework:afield was
produced there by regular contributor luís antero, and we welcome a new
station to the fold, from one of our favorite european cities, porto:
radio manobras! check out their broadcast schedule and live stream here:
http://www.radiomanobras.pt

meanwhile, some notes about this week's program, in the producer's
native portuguese, and translated into english:

-----

é a própria vida.

-----

near my home there is a sonic place. this place is inhabited, of course,
by a multitude of sounds. some of them have existed for a very long
time. some of these old sounds seem to want to cease. there are others
that resist and live in communion with the people who also inhabit this
sonic place. these people, my neighbors, live in communion with others,
also neighbors, and their sheep. some are shepherds and lead the sheep
to graze in the Serra da Estrela, the highest point in Portugal. these
sheep use a special "dish", consisting of rattles and bells. thus, in
this manner, they produce a long, continuous minimal music, helping the
shepherd to know that they are not lost, above or below the hills. this
sonic place, i have said, is inhabited, and is in the daily lives of
these people, in their farming labors: for example, water is used to
irrigate the thirsty fields, but also to move the wheel that powers the
machines in the old olive oil mill, which was once called “the mill with
the modern system". the water is heard in every corner of this sonic
place. it produces life. the mountain, above, is life itself.
