Rudolfo Quintas is a visual artist and performer who specializes in the design of interactive audiovisual systems. The piece "Burning The Sound" won the CTM/Transmediale Award 2009. Quintas creates a dynamic visual soundscape. The interactive sound performance is about the nature of rituals, power and control. It uses fire from a regular lighter to subvert patterns of rhythm, thus using technologically mediated computer sound to exorcise the sound as a spiritual strategy. The performer's gestures in relation to his instrument not only show the performer's emotional state, but it brings the instrument to life. In this action, it is explored and established as a synaesthesic symbolic metaphor in the sense that it is from the flame that the sound is shaped. This intensifies the synaesthesic quality of the sound being perceived as burned by the flame. Fire was probably the first technology to exist and is knowledge based and ritualistic. Within "Burning The Sound", digital, new media and ancestral technologies fuse to question contemporary strategies of invisible control. (TodaysArt festival)

Burning the sound is a visually amplified sound art performance pushing the ritualistic primitivism, gesture and body to technological mediated computer sound performances. It was motivated to expand the aesthetic and composition approach in the gender of late 90s electronic music Glitch whose roots can be found in earlier XX century Futurism „Art of Noise‟ manifesto.
It was created a new "performance-specific-instrument‟, that is, an instrument specifically developed for a performance - as analogy to a „site-specific‟ art work whose space (site) is the "canvas‟.
This instrument, highly gestural, captures the flame‟s shape from regular fire lighters and matches, to sonically render in real-time the distortion and micro manipulation of sound samples by affecting the way the data of a sample is read and played. This is made trough the development of a costume Augmented Reality interface. As the flames visual impulses are deeply connected to the aural perception of the sound - "the sound seems to be burning‟. This process establishes a percepto-motivated audiovisual metaphor.
The performance is timeline structured guided by gestural improvisation based on pre-established „rituals‟. It has aprox. 13 minutes, set to be live performed using massive sound speakers. It is sonically "aggressive‟ from the begging, growing from droned to rhythmic sculptured sounds, from free improvisation to pattern sequencing until its subversion.
I perform with de feeling that I am “exorcising the sound”, this is for me, a spiritual attempt in finding the moments were the “noise” produced by digital distortion becomes warm and beauty, almost like the fire itself, is not good or evil, just needs to be in the right place.

His music is destinated to be perform live, only few home made CDr (copyleft of course !!) are available. Former student of piano at conservatory (Montreux in Switzerland), jazz & also at sound technician school (Lausanne in Switzerland) for a total of 18 years of academic stuff,,, but still, he is intersted in composition and keep (really) important base to produce his actual live performance.

. . .'s also active with other musical project such as the extrem duo Overload Collapse with the tattoo artist and Noisician Nicolas J. Fasnacht, CINE-NOISE with cineasts Ricardo da Silva & Sara Tocchetti & musician TOKAGE & VERJ.

To produce his music, he work with is a computer for real time treatment (mainly MAX/MSP), a small mixing table and some analogic effects. To produce and play live the sounds, he use basic feedback (analogic & numeric) sounds and then go thru different way such as effects, spring reverb, laptop, recorder and even nowhere ! Anyway... How cares about that ? Music is maybe one of the best way to say something that anybody should understand.
