ourselves to five great releases that each deserved out full attention.
firstly, <STRONG>23five</STRONG> has released a full disc of works by
<STRONG>jean-francois laporte</STRONG>, including the exquisite
<STRONG><EM>mantra,</EM></STRONG> which we originally featured on framework some
years back when it was released on <STRONG>metamkine</STRONG>'s
<STRONG><EM>cinema pour l'oreille</EM></STRONG> series of 3" cds.
<STRONG><EM>mantra</EM></STRONG> is composed entirely from the sounds if a
compressor on an ice rink, and its intensely complex patterns of stunning
drones are a sound for sore ears. we couldn't resist playing this
again (although we rarely do repeats), especially in the company of two of the
disc's other pieces, one composed entirely from stormy wind sounds, and the
other making full use of the natural 15 second reverb inside an empty cargo
hull.</SPAN></FONT></SPAN></FONT></SPAN></FONT></FONT></FONT></FONT></FONT></SPAN></FONT></DIV>

<STRONG>afflux</STRONG>'s less-than-new release <STRONG><EM>bordeaux
tnt</EM></STRONG>, constructed from the recordings of a 6 hour live performance
in 2000 featuring their usual array of ambient mics and wire installations; 2
pieces from the italian artist <STRONG>hue</STRONG>'s lovely and somehow
somewhat narrative debut cd; a few end-on-end selections from the very active
san francisco musician <STRONG>jefre cantu-ledesma</STRONG>'s recent spekk cd,
and 2 tracks from <STRONG><EM>iland</EM></STRONG>, the stunning work of two
australian sound artists, <STRONG>thembi soddell</STRONG> and <STRONG>anthea
caddy</STRONG>. while this release might not <EM>technically</EM> qualify
as field-recording (you may have noticed i'm getting much less strict in my old
age), it's attention to space and resonance (certain sound materials were
recorded in a reverb chamber, others in an anechoic chamber), not to mention
it's intensity and beauty, qualified it enough for my
ears...</SPAN></FONT></SPAN></FONT></SPAN></FONT></FONT></FONT></FONT></FONT></SPAN></FONT></DIV>
