In the 1980's, after moving to San Francisco and gaining experience as an audio technician, Cascone worked with David Lynch as Assistant Music Editor on both Twin Peaks and Wild at Heart. Cascone left the film industry in 1991 to concentrate on Silent Records, a label that he founded in 1986, transforming it into the U.S.'s premier electronic music label. At the height of Silent's success, he sold the company in early 1996 to pursue a career as a sound designer and went to work for Thomas Dolby's company Headspace as a sound designer and composer. After a two year stint at Headspace he worked for Staccato Systems as the Director of Content where he oversaw sound design using algorithmic synthesis for video games. Since 1984, Kim has released more than 30 albums of electronic music and has recorded/performed with Merzbow, Keith Rowe, Tony Conrad, Scanner, John Tilbury, Ikue Mori, and Pauline Oliveros among others. Cascone was one of the co-founders of the microsound list which focuses on issues concerning digital music and laptop performance (<FONT class="Apple-style-span" color="#0000FF"><A href="http://www.microsound.org">http://www.microsound.org</A></FONT>) and has written for Computer Music Journal (MIT Press), Artbyte Magazine, Contemporary Music Review, Soundcultures and Parachute Journal. In this visit to Montreal Kim will be gracing our ears with a solo laptop set and traversing varied micro-sonic terrains - textured, smooth, noisy, ambient, pulsing...</DIV><DIV style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 12px/normal Verdana; min-height: 15px; "><BR></DIV><DIV style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; ">Pour ceux qui sont sensibles aux tendances actuelles de "glitch" et autres musiques électroniques et post-numériques, Kim Cascone ne nécessite pas de présentation, en reconnaissance de cause de son long parcours musical dans les-dits courants: il a suivi des études en musique électronique à la Faculté de Musique de Berklee à l'aube des années 1970 et poursuivit son cursus dès 1976 à la New School de New York City sous la tutelle de Dana McCurdy. Depuis 1984, Kim a réalisé plus d'une trentaine d'albums de musique électronique et a enregistré et joué entre autres avec Merzbow, Keith Rowe, Tony Conrad, Robin Rimbaud aka Scanner, John Tilbury, Ikue Mori et Pauline Oliveros... Using the framework of a genetic algorithm, each member's contribution will interact within this living computation system, producing a sonic pool that is the result of artificial life processes, as directed by each person's unique aesthetic choices. This emergent content - with the history, memory, choice of each member and of the system itself embedded in each sound - will then be weaved into a sonic tapestry by all members of the group for this special performance.
