IO/31 Kelly Davis: Diary of a Parachutist<br>

What does parachuting sound like? Presumably you will not find the
answer in Kelly Davis' "Diary of a Parachutist", but you
will listen to a delicate and evocative work of microsound melting
field-recordings, synthesized drones and other sources into a complex
"story told thru sound". Regular visitors to INDEXOF/
already know the first three episodes of this cycle; now it is
downloadable in full length.<br>
Kelly Davis is an american sound artist currently based in London. His
activity ranges from concerts, installations and performances to sound
for film and video works. Sonic collaborations with mzweig &
kristen_ [kmh], Antoine Vehaverbeke & Mark Roberts [pistorasia / x
- +], Minoru Sato [PoD] and others. Together with norwegian video
artist HC Gilje he formed BLIND, an audiovisual performance
group.</font><br>

<div><font face="Arial">"Bleisatz" is the german term for
the obsolete technology of hot-metal typesetting. As someone described
it, in former times "...the typesetting/printing shop was
characterized by noise, toxic fumes, and machine
grease..."</font></div>
<div><font face="Arial">German sound artist and founder of INDEXOF/,
chladni, gathered five tracks around the "bleisatz"
metaphor. Proceeding from purely digital source material, basic
waveforms are manipulated until they reach the point when references
to concrete states and processes seem to emerge. In a rather abstract
way, "bleisatz" evokes the atmosphere of those outdated
typesetting/printing shops which are bearing greater resemblances to
an alchemistic laboratory than to a desktop-publishing
office.</font><br>
