He grew up mainly in Australia and France, but returned to the UK to study music at Oxford, graduating with First Class honours. He then studied Composition at the Royal College of Music. From 1996 he has worked as a freelance violinist, playing and recording with classical groups including Bebeto String Quartet, rock groups including Miranda Sex Garden, and gypsy violin duo AB. He has worked extensively as a composer, arranger and schoolteacher. Two of Barney's orchestral compositions have won second prize in two major international competitions: the Uuno Klami International Composition Competition in 2004 and the Zeitklang International Composition Competition in 2005.
