The electronics-focused 2015 San Francisco Fog Music FestivalDear µsounders -
This is to let you know about the concluding "Electroacoustic night" which I'm curating tomorrow in this year's ongoing San Francisco Fog Music Festival, featuring electronic, computer, & electroacoustic music over 4-days. Performers will hail from France, Korea, Stanford, LA, SF, and the East Bay.
If you're in the Bay Area tomorrow, you may find it interesting. (Resending - email title did not seem to appear before….)
=================================
MSP/Piano++: w Mukaiji-kai (霧海箎会), @ The Second Act, SF: tomorrow, Saturday, 31 Jan (Set 4)
=================================
Ancient fog-related music from the Japanese Zen repertoire: Mukaiji (霧海箎, “Fog, Ocean, Flute”), received by shakuhachi & Zen master Kyochiku Zenji (虚竹禅師) on a boat in a dream almost 700 years ago, re-mapped using elements as diverse as video, dance, didgeridoo, shakuhachi, percussion, piano, monster contrabass recorder & laptop.
An electroacoustic boat drifts through the fog, hearing neogaku sound-islands... as solos and embedded contrastive pieces emerge from this flowing matrix, in a new structure designed by Nancy Beckman.
+: Tom Bickley’s meditative and translucent piece, Tolling, which relaxes and opens as it is realized by the players’ explorations & choices within its abstract melodic and harmonic system.
Line-up:
— Nancy Beckman: shakuhachi— Tom Bickley: EWI wind synthesizer & contrabass recorder— Nan Busse: dance & didjeridoo— Joe Lasqo: MSP/laptop, piano, objects, ringleader— Suki O'Kane: percussion— Bill Thibault: video
◉ Brian Day (invented instruments), Jack Hertz ('tronx), rizorkestra (guitar/FX) (Set 1)Modal shimmer washing over a terrain of crunchy invented sound, like ultraviolet fog pouring through hills dotted with telepathic cows and a large, glowing radar dish, alongside an alternate Route 280...
◉ RTD3 (Doug Carroll: cello/field recordings, Ron Heglin: trombone/voice, Tom Nunn: invented instruments) (Set 2)Hypersensitive improv trio where all 3 players span the full range from percussive to melodic… sometimes within the same note.
◉ Dohee Lee (이도희): shaman/voc/mvmt/costume/gesture controllers, Adria Otte: E Asian perc/'tronx, Ed Schocker: invented hydrophonic instruments (Set 3)Between ancient/future, ritual/music, this world/the other world… Donald Swearingen's gesture controllers, inventions, processing, + post-modern possession.
◉ Chris & Sebastian Chafe (celletto/contrabass/software/'tronx/vid), w plasticienne sonore from Paris, Aurélie Ménétrieux ('tronx/vid) (Set 5)PuffTron CO₂ sensor streaming data of “hyperlocal fog” mapped, sonified, and visualized in a multimedia software framework, combining with sound from modified & unmodified string instruments & live electronics to conclude the Fog Music Festival.

Join us as we convolve musical influences from 3 continents and the past, present and future, in a swirl of fog…
