新年快樂!Year of the Ram - 羊新年
Dear µsounders -

Wishing you a very healthy, creative, prosperous and happy Year of the Ram!
Kicking it off, here are two shows, starting from tomorrow, Thu 19 Feb. Show  #1 will be of special interest to lovers of electronic and computer music, and may interest you if you're in the Bay Area.
=================================
① MSP/Synth++: Year of the Ram Show (羊新年音樂會): Ring in Spring with an electro-acoustic improv vortex, tomorrow, Thu 19 Feb @ The Luggage Store (in slightly displaced-reality location)
=================================
A well-balanced electro-acoustic improv vortex takes forward the grand tradition of chance-generated small ensembles, pioneered in New Zealand by the Vitamin S collective, and in the U.K. by figures such as Derek Bailey in his Company nights — a  format designed to be maximally impervious to advance preparation...
Sounds and players will remain cloaked until just before dropping out of warp. Anything could happen.
Line-up:
— Matt Davignon  ( electronics  |  ringleader )— Jorge Bachmann  ( electronics )— Tom BIckley ( electronic & acoustic winds | voice | objects )— Bryan Day  ( invented instruments  |  software  |  processing )— Karl Evangelista  ( guitar |  FX )— Philip Everett  ( electronics )— Joe Lasqo  ( MSP  |  synth  |  objects )— Joshua Marshall  ( winds  |  saxes )— Collette McCaslin  ( trumpet )— Mark Pino  ( percussion )— Rent Romus  ( winds  |  saxes  |  toys  |  joik )— Eli Wallace  ( keyboards )

② Indo-Encounter Zones: New Western instruments in today’s Indian classical music ◉ Set 1 – North Indian: Chapman Stick type "touch-style veena" + sitar + tabla  ◉ Set 2 – South Indian: sax + mṛdangam, Sun 22 Feb @ Berkeley Arts Festival
=================================Sarasvatī (सरस्वती), goddess of music, at the touch-style veena

The phenomenon of Western-instrument crossover into North & South Indian classical music during the 20th century is a beautiful and fascinating one, accelerating a long process that began with the first adoption of the violin into South Indian music around the time of the American Revolution…
This concert showcases some of the brilliant Bay Area musicians who are working in this area.

◉ Set 1: North Indian Jugalbandi (जुगलबंदी)
— Teed Rockwell (invented "Touch-Style" Veena)— Peter van Gelder (sitar)— Samrat Kakkeri (सम्राट कक्केरी):  tabla
◉ Set 2: Classic South Indian format
— Prasant Radhakrishnan (ప్రశాంత్ రాధాకృష్ణన్): sax— Rohan Krishnamurthy (ரோகன் கிருஷ்ணமூ): mṛdangam

Drop out of (or into...) warp with us and the Ram of a resurgent Spring in a electro-acoustic improv vortex… and come vibrate with us in the Indo-Encounter Zones.
