SOUNDBOXES WORKSHOP with DEREK HOLZER
Two day workshop
12th & 13rth October 2013
£25 per person.

Discover the hidden sonic qualities of objects from our everyday world in
this hands-on workshop, combining the arts of electronics, noise, sculpture
and collage.

SoundBoxes are small, primitive electro-acoustic instruments built from a
wooden box, a speaker, a small audio amplifier and a contact microphone.
They can create a variety of drone and reverb-type sounds through feedback
between the speaker and microphone, as seen in this video <
https://vimeo.com/34477093>. Or they can bring out the hidden sounds found
within everyday objects as seen in this video <https://vimeo.com/16567547>.
They also have small touchpoints which can be used to produce a variety of
"circuit bending" sounds. And finally, they can be used as a portable
amplifier for any kind of electronic or electric instrument with a jack
plug.

WHAT WE WILL DO

During the first day of the workshop, we will build the circuit and get it
in the box. On the second day, we will explore how this SoundBox can be
used in combination with found objects, pencil-drawings and other music
instruments to created different types of sounds and interactions. We will
also think about ways to improvise with the boxes and "score" a group
performance. The workshop should conclude with a presentation/concert by
the participants and an invitation to the audience to play the instruments
as well.

WHAT TO BRING

Participants should bring a wooden box (or if you want one from us email
jake at access-space.org when you buy your ticket), such as a cigar box,
jewelry case, suitcase or instrument case, to build their SoundBox. This
box should be a minimum of 6.5" tall, 3.5" wide and 1.5" deep, but larger
is of course better. The lid of the box shouldn't be more than 3/8" thick.

You may wish to bring their own found objects and images to create a unique
audiovisual cabinet of curiosities. Some guitar effect pedals can also make
the box more interesting. If you want a bigger speaker than the 3.5" ones
provided, you can bring one from an old clock radio, cassette player or
hi-fi system, just make sure it fits in your box!!!! All other tools,
materials and speakers will be provided.
