It has a very simple and easy to manipulate technology, so we started deconstructing and rebuilding records and turntables. The whole history of music is available on record and we were no longer limited by your own lack of musical skills. Instead we could focus on the sculptural, materialistic aspects of the media and choose the music we thought most fidding to the kind of atmosphere we wanted to create. In 2003 we moved to Berlin and opened a space for concerts and exhibitions called "Habengut". Our bandname was created in this time aswell. On a flyer for an event where we were going to perform our style was described as "vinyl terror" so we added the horror and it has stuck to us ever since." I want to reveal the physicality of the piano as a dirty monster. I expect the audience to shiver with me thanks to the vibes from inside the piano. Music as a channel for the exchange of fluids and energies in the most direct way possible. The piano is not an instrument but a partner that helps me express the unspeakable. I feel I want to get absorbed by and take the audience into the noise (as I feel when I listen to some concerts by others) and a wall of sound where you cannot really distinguish the sources of the sound, where everything is melting into an impossible cry, when you feel like many voices are screaming but there are no voices, when you come into trance and you begin to get sonic hallucinations, when your body shakes from the extreme loudness and power of the basses, when music is liberating destruction. Of course these words are strong and it is probably an utopia to get there but I want to believe in it and work harder to slowly move in this direction." The basic elements of this workshop are a wooden box, a speaker, a small audio amplifier, and a contact microphone. To this, brave box-builders will add their own found objects, graphics, images, memories and ideas to create a unique electroacoustic cabinet of curiosities. No previous electronics experience is necessary for this workshop. Each participant is required to bring several items to the workshop, please see below. WHAT TO BRING I will provide most of the tools and materials necessary for constructing the box, however there are a few things you should bring yourself: 1) A BOX: This should be made of thin wood or very strong cardboard. Plastic can be also used, but it doesn?t sound very good. And please, no metal! It is too difficult to cut and drill with the tools we will have. This box should be a minimum of 10x10x4cm, or bigger if you want to use a larger speaker or have more room to decorate and add objects. Cigar boxes, small suitcases, instrument cases or jewelry/silverware boxes are all good things to look for. At least one side of the box should be no more than 5mm thick, to allow the hardware to be mounted. 2) A SPEAKER (OPTIONAL): I will have a selection of speakers for participants to use. However, if you have something special please bring it along, but please make sure it fits in the box you have chosen! 3) FOUND OBJECTS: Please bring as many found objects as you can to decorate your soundbox or use as a sound source via the contact microphone. Bones, shells, small sticks, bells, strings, wires, springs (especially!) or anything else made out of solid yet resonant material make great sound sources. Photographs, cloth, leather, paper or any other kind of material can be useful for covering the box and making collages. Paint, markers and pens may also be useful. FURTHER INFO: You can see videos and photos from previous SoundBoxes workshops here: http://macumbista.net/?page_id=1897 You can see all posts related to SoundBoxes, including ones I have made for sale recently, here: http://macumbista.net/?tag=soundboxes ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Derek Holzer (1972) is an American sound artist based in Berlin, whose current interests include DIY analog electronics, sound art, field recording and the meeting points of electroacoustic, noise, improv and extreme music. He has played live experimental sound, as well as taught workshops in noise art technology, across Europe, North America, Brazil and New Zealand. http://macumbista.net/ BASIC INFO: Fee: EUR 30 (participation) + EUR 10 (materials) Registration is required and can be done by sending an email to info at nkprojekt.de with the subject line ?SoundBoxes?. The workshop will be divided into two parts: a theoretical one, and a more practical one. In the first part, I will talk about the properties of feedback systems from a systemic and cybernetic perspective within the framework of emergent and complex phenomena, along with theoretical concepts related to such an approach for creative practices. In the second part, I will present some of my works and techniques, and the implementation of such systems through the Pure Data programming environment, analog devices or other softwares, although such systems can be machine-independent and the technical description provided makes it possible to implement these techniques in other environments. Main discussed topics: Part I Positive and negative feedback Nonlinearity, circular causality and iteration Interaction, interdependency and synergy Self-dis/organisation, homeorhesis and homeostasis Chaos, emergence and complexity Autonomous and self-sustaining non-automated systems Non-random unpredictability Organic sound Analogue complex dynamical systems The subversion of technology The aesthetics of the emergent machine Improvisation as a feedback mechanism Part II Feedback delay networks Digital reverberation Single-side modulation (frequency shifting) Recursive asynchronous granular synthesis Recursive nonlinear distortion Adaptive limiting LIES (topology) LIES (distance/incidence) LIES (analog/bent) SD/OS (presence) SD/OS (dirac) SD/OS (self-motion) The workshop will be held in english. Originally published at the UN website. UN Can we talk about the idea of the ecstatic? You make music, or sound pieces, that are very repetitive and monotonous, and then you?ve chosen to work with a voice that goes into ecstasy. What fascinates you about this? L? I believe that in a state of ecstasy, if you?re able to reach it, which is pretty difficult ? but if you reach this state, then you?re as close to total freedom as a human being can get. Then you?re completely open ? open to yourself and to the world around you. I think of it as a way of reaching some kind of understanding. UN OK. So it?s about transforming the body, by subjecting it to the treatment of certain sounds. L? Yes. If you?re treated really hard, if you?re exposed to certain stimuli, then it will have a physical effect on you. What interests me is the state of non-control you can reach. In a sense, totally uncontrolled thoughts and experiences can appear. This type of sounds can have hallucinatory effects as well. UN This is something you?re usually working with, aren?t you? L? Yes, or at least it?s always been there as an element. Hypnosis is another state that interests me, on the side of ecstasy. It?s a similar state, a state on the same level but at another end. It?s somehow always present in what I do. And it?s really not about anything else than entering into a certain state. UN You work quite differently from other contemporary sound artists. I imagine it has to do with the fact that you want to produce a very concrete effect. It?s as if the sounds themselves have no meaning of their own, but only work as stimuli. And this leads to your working a lot with rhythms, which not so many others do. Can you say something about this? L? I think the pulse is extremely important, especially when you use this kind of chaotic sounds. It creates a structure that makes it possible to somehow look into the sounds. One is always looking for structures. And a pulse is an incredibly simple structure, isn?t it? Somehow chaos stands in opposition to? The pulse beats something into your mind? It creates a structure in the chaos. And somehow you can enter deeper into it. Pure, random chaos does not interest me. I like it when there?s an intention behind the music. A lot of people work with very random sounds. That?s not interesting to me. For music to have a meaning it needs to have an intention. You can listen to field recordings if you like, you know, sounds recorded in nature, and there?s no intention there, which could be interesting. But as soon as you make a selection you have processed the sound. If you just stick your head out in the woods, you?ll hear no meaningful sounds? UN I?m thinking about the similarity to dance music here. The connection is clear. How do you understand your own practice in relation to traditional rhythmical dance music? L? The difference is that, even though there?s a pulse in my pieces, it?s within the sound itself it happens. The pulse is a means for entering into the sound. Traditional dance music focuses on the pulse, the sounds work for the pulse. But sure, I think that a lot of contemporary dance music is far more interesting than much contemporary sound art. Often, contemporary sound art has simply another angle than mine. http://www.larsakerlund.com/ This concert has been made possible with support by the Swedish Arts Grants Committee From hars7 at hotmail.com Thu May 2 14:35:44 2013 From: hars7 at hotmail.com (HarS' Sound Chronicles) Date: Thu, 2 May 2013 20:35:44 +0200 Subject: [microsound-announce] Sound art in Kortrijk, Belgium Message-ID: [ SOUNDING CITY, until May 5th ] Budatoren, ground floor: Signe Lid?n - Writings================================Six limbed sticks are being moved around by three circular plates on the ceiling. They hit and thus, though ever so slightly, re-shape the piles of soil below them on the floor, that, for some reason, have been left there, and by the contingency of their material substance and form now seem to be commanding their proper tracing, for ever and ever. [ ...] ?Yes, it is strange,? Signe said. ?Several times during these weeks of creating ?Writings?, together with my collaborator Roar Sletteland, it felt as if nature took us by surprise. I think this is the strangest piece I ever made??http://resonancenetwork.wordpress.com/2013/05/01/holes-caves-archives-inscriptions/ Budatoren, top floor: Pascal Broccolichi - Invasive Harmonie======================================="Invasive Harmonie" is, and profoundly so, a sculptural work, as much as it is a sound work. And creating a ?sonic landscape? also means, in a very deep sense, that you are doing a painter?s job; besides being on top of it all, at least partly, also very cinematographic, even though there is nothing like a ?scene?. What I mean of course is a ?cinema for the ears?, the construction of which will strongly depend on each of the separate beholders? psychological states. For me, there are a number of quite heavy and melancholic moments. Others, on the contrary, are almost ethereal. But somebody else may experience it in a very different way. I do think that listening encourages this type of solitary relation to the self. And whether the listening will take place for a mere couple of seconds, or for several hours, for me this does not change the way in which I approach the work as an artist. In all of the possible cases my investment and my concern will be the same.?http://resonancenetwork.wordpress.com/2013/02/18/memory-as-a-dorsal-spine/ Budafabriek: Jitske Blom & Thomas Rutgers - The Beaters=======================================?For the time being I am going to stick to a fixed composition, of about ten minutes, that will be continuously repeating,? Thomas insisted. ?It will be a piece with very gradual changes, and of course people can step in somewhere in the middle of it; or leave in the middle. But it will be a relatively short cycle, so mucg is true. It remains a fascinating problem indeed, how to compose for a sound installation. And a problem, that, I think, does not have an easy and straightforward solution. When you use such shifting layers, to me that feels like giving up control; you then already switch to another level, far more abstract and far more ?macro?; which can be OK. If you are willing to accept that. For me it remains a challenge, to look for forms that continue to provide me with enough control, but that also allow me to make something that remains dynamic??http://resonancenetwork.wordpress.com/2013/03/11/the-beaters/ Soundwalk: David Helbich - Kortrijk Tracks=======================================Together with Christina Kubisch's "Electric Walk Kortrijk", David Helbich's "Kortrijk Tracks" mark the launch of a collection of soundwalks for the city of Kortrijk, curated by the Flanders Festival's director Joost Fonteyne. WITH STRATOFYZIKA Workshop will be structured subsequently: presenting the complex system of interaction in audiovisual performance, closer examination of each contemporary art form: audio (composition of experimental electronic music, live production, improvisation, sound characters and experiments), visuals (on a wider range of physical/visual interaction, interaction within responsive environments, and interaction between physical and virtual worlds) and movements (various dance approaches in performance; making conscious decisions in relationship to the audio and visual elements created and making maps for choreography generated by various qualities of movement. authentic movement exercise in relationship to concept of shadows, dualities and atavisms), theoretical summary of each part, a functional explanation and practical experimentation with techniques and possibilities within each form, creating a new concept for the workshop group and final creation of new practical and concrete piece. Attendants will be split into three groups, led by a person respectively in their focus of audio, visuals or movement. We will accent the constant relationship between audio ? visual ? performance. On conceptual level of audio representing time perception, common emotional experiences and abstract language, visuals building architecture in space, defying images or creating illusions, dance as presentation of dynamic force and velocity, together in interaction with audio and visuals. All approaches are versatile, all three parts of audiovisual performance has the same potency of carrying metaphors of the story, interpreting the final piece in a congenial trinity. We will explore the practical and conceptual implications of working with interactive tools, instruments and computer-controlled systems within performance conditions. Interactive tools and systems, ranging from multimedia and real time synthesis software (Max/MSP, Isadora) to the construction of proximity sensors (haptic, pressure and flex sensors, etc), distance-sensor (e.g. ultrasound, laser) or camera/video-based responsive environments and ?seeing spaces?. All that linked to Audio (on Ableton Live), within action/reaction ?forces?. Opportunities for learning about creative applications of digital technologies in dance and performance and for developing individual approaches and aesthetics are still not easy to have, and stronger partnerships between choreographers, musicians and software programmers but also with practitioners from the communications and social science fields need to be forged in order to further our understanding of the physical, cognitive, and social dimensions of interactivity. cargocollective.com/stratofyzika TIME: 16:00-21:00 COST: 50? TROY, NY - April 8th, 2013 - The Arts Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute announces the premiere of a mechanomyogram (MMG) multi-media production, "[radical] signs of life," on May 3rd at 4:00 pm and May 4th at 7:30 pm in Studio 2 at the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC). Through responsive dance, "[radical] signs of life" externalizes the mind?s non-hierarchical distribution of thought. Music is generated from the dancers? muscles and blood flow via biophysical sensors that capture sound waves from the performers? bodies. This data triggers complex neural patterns to be projected onto multiple screens as 3D imagery. As the audience interacts with the images produced, they enter into a dialogue with the dancers. A backstage pictures gallery can be seen at the bottom website link. The performance makes use of biophysical technology to integrate networked bodies and interactive dance. It was conceived and directed by new media artist and game designer Heidi Boisvert in collaboration with an international team of artists, including Pauline Jennings (Choreographer), Doug Van Nort (Sound Designer), Allen Hahn (Set & Lighting Designer), Raven Kwok (Visual Designer), Amy Nielson (Costume Designer) and Marco Donnarumma (Sensor Designer & Developer). The project features the Xth Sense (XS), a biophysical sensor that detects and captures mechanical sound waves produced at the onset of musculature contraction. For "[radical] signs of life," a wireless network and stand alone armband was custom developed for the XS by engineer MJ Caselden, and industrial designer, Krystal Pernaud. The choreography for the hour-long performance will be composed in real-time by five dancers from a shared movement database in accordance with pre-determined rules. Outfitted with two wireless sensors each, the dancers--Jennifer Mellor, Ellen Smith Ahern, Hanna Satterlee, Avi Waring and Willow Wonder--will create patterns that dissolve from autonomous polyrhythms to intersecting lines as they slip through generative video and light. "[radical] signs of life" was produced, in part, at Harvestworks with funds from the Rockefeller Foundation?s New York City Cultural Innovation Fund and the National Endowment for the Arts. The work was made possible through generous support from the Rensselaer Arts Department along with iEAR Studios, and EMPAC staff. Rehearsal space was granted by an Artistic Residency at the Contemporary Dance and Fitness Center in Montpelier, Vermont. Limited Seating. Reservations recommended. The Observatory with Colin Hacklander on drums / The Realistic Micro Dwarf: The Duo of Burkhard Beins & Clayton Thomas The Observatory are an independent avant rock band and an experimental music group based in Singapore, consisting largely of alumni from significant 1990s Singaporean bands. Founded in 2001, the group?s main tenet is to push individual and collective boundaries farther. The goal isn?t just about creating music that contains universal themes or writing about life from a distinctly Singaporean perspective. It?s about breaking down inhibition, convention and the mechanical way of commercial music-making. The group draws inspiration from their Southeast Asian roots and an unavoidable post-colonial musical diet. The Observatory fuse unconventional structures, Asian rhythms, bold arrangements, improvisation, thought and expression, while borrowing from random music styles to stir up a potent concoction of emotionally powerful extremes, disturbed and angry on one end, haunting and melancholic on the other. The heart and soul of The Observatory is in its constant reinvention. With each release, the members have persisted in their experimental take on the song form. This frequently takes their music to the outer limits, creating a rich musical repertoire that?s texturally complex in a sonic tour de force of songs that are viscerally emotional and splintering in its bleakness. A study in delusion, insanity and obsession, *Catacombs*, their latest album, provokes and inspires in a deeply enigmatic way. Even at its coldest and most abstract, it is human to the core. Sadly, it has replaced many mailing lists and forums as the central info point... however this is the main symptom of the information age--this constant (and bewildering) chase after moving targets of what is "current". Live it or leave it! ;-) That said, I would be curious to know what FB pages people do use to share and discover microsound-related stuff. Best! When an electric current is sent through the rocks sporadic noise bursts from the speakers. With some fine tuning these rocks begin to behave like microphones, amplifying howling feedback and detecting subtle scratches and disturbances in their surrounding environment. Occasionally the circuit exhibits visual output coinciding with the audible in the form of small sparks and minute explosions occurring where the copper point contacts meet the surface of the rock. This crude amplifier is based on the Adams Crystal Amplifier 1933, a precursor to the modern transistor, one of the fundamental building blocks of today's electronic and digital world. This workshop is limited to ten participants. No prior experience with electronics is necessary. All materials will be provided. Crepuscule (I) ? 16?21? Euphorion alpha (24?22?) Ana-Maria Avram: Metalstorm (I) Irridiscences Meditations Romanian-born Iancu Dumitrescu and his wife Ana-Maria Avram are leading figures in experimental and ?spectral? composition. Their prodigious output includes over 300 unique works and 30 joint CD releases on their own Edition Modern label. The last two Cds Edityion Modern EDMN 1029 and EDMN1030 will be launched before the concert. ? Dumitrescu?s music is spectral, electroacoustic, but above all it is a coherent totality grounded in a different conception. Of all living composers, Dumitrescu is the one who has most exploded sound. Dumitrescu?s work is a negation, from the depths, of everything in contemporary music symptomatic of distraction, of banalisation, and of a radical loss of purpose. His music is not a new convolution in the knot of modern music, but an unravelling of the curse. (?) One of the first pieces I heard was ?Pierres Sacr?es?; I was very struck ? as were many other people ? by the sound of this music. It seemed quite unlike the usual sound of contemporary composed music. It had far more distortion, noise and violence. There seemed to be a shift away from stable fundamental frequencies, and a greater emphasis on the unstable aspects of sound?? Tim HODGKINSON ? RESONANCE ? London Avram?s music is particularly remarkable because of the very real warmth with which she imbues each of her pieces. Whether composing a solo work which she herself performs, or a piece for electronics, pre-recorded tape, and an entire chamber ensemble, Avram has a brilliant flair for the dramatic paired with a sense of subtlety that lends great contrast and excitement to each moment of each of her works. (?) These clips included here are just a few examples of the already deep contributions Avram has made, to the world of New Music? . WFMU Radio Station http://thewire.co.uk/audio/tracks/p=14981 http://hyperspectral.99k.org/Site/index.html ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? The music of Steven Noll explores the relationship of gesture and sound on the crest of current music technology. It is the marriage of the latest software technology with creative music instrument design. In collaboration with artist Farahnaz Hatam, some of the inventions spawned from this marriage are the photo voltaic Air Guitar, the Orb, and the Photon Balloons. Examples of performances along with recordings can be found at http://www.hearthat.org/,created and maintained by artist/webmaster Clause-Uwe Rank. Born in 1958, at the age of 6, Noll began piano lessons and concluded his music education in 1980 at MSU with a degree in music composition and theory. Since then he has made his living as an accompanist for opera and ballet, working at schools and theaters in Darmstadt, Berlin, San Francisco, Paris and New York. His experience with the form and expression of classical music carries over into his avant-garde compositions. He has performed his own music in numerous underground and fringe venues in Europe and the USA. His current repertoire consists of an amalgamation of just-intoned tunings using synthesized sound, processed live with sound effects algorithms using interactive keyboard controllers. The processed sounds are spontaneously sculpted into gestures creating a series of sonic vignettes. The music is symphonic in nature and is conceived to be auditioned as a symphony would be ? as a vehicle for contemplation. Coincident with the music is the perennial idea of the active spirits of form, movement and ?wisdom? collaborating in the evolution of the perceptible universe, both subtle and manifest. The consequent sound waves present this collaboration in an eruption and metamorphosis of form and movement that conform to the subconscious ?wisdom? that permeates our perceptions. In the ethereal nature of the music itself is a mirror of our ethereal essence and subconscious inspiration. Originally began as a solo project by Baker in 2003, Buckareff joined Nadja in 2005 to bring the project out of the studio and into live settings. Together, the duo creates music which has variously been described as ?ambient doom,? ?dreamsludge,? and ?metalgaze,? combining the atmospheric textures and elements of shoegaze and experimental/ambient music with the heaviness and volume of metal and noise music. Nadja has released numerous recordings on such labels as Alien8 Recordings, Hydrahead Records, Beta-Lactam Ring Records, Robotic Empire, and their own label, Broken Spine Productions. Nadja has toured and performed extensively around the world, appearing at such diverse festivals as SXSW, FIMAV, Roadburn, and Unsound. In addition to Nadja, Baker is also active as a solo musician and a writer. He has released many solo albums and is the author of four collections of poetry. Buckareff is also the owner-operator of Coldsnap Bindery, a production house of handmade books, and curator of The Wunderkabinet, a wandering exhibition of art, craft, and curious. VAMPILLIA A self-styled ?brutal orchestra,? Vampillia formed in 2009 in Osaka, Japan and combines classical instrumentation with heavy guitars and drums, mixing operatic vocals with death metal yowls, simultaneously exploring drone, noise, doom, and pop. With members from such bands as Boredoms, World?s End Girlfriend, Ruins, Vampillia has toured extensively in Japan, Australia, and USA, but as yet minimally in Europe. In 2011 they released their debut album ?Alchemic Heart? on Important Records and recorded their follow-up ?Some Nightmares Bring You Aurora Rainbow Darkness? with Ben Frost at Greenhouse Studios in Iceland. http://www.vampillia.com/ http://vampillia.bandcamp.com/ CRYSTAL SHIPSSS Like all great voyages, Crystal Shipsss began with a vision. One morning in Montreal, a bleary-eyed Dane named Jacob Faurholt awoke to see that all of the friends he was visiting were making music, not for a living ? but as their living. Soon afterward, Faurholt saw himself returning to Europe where he quit his teaching job in Denmark and began building the tender framework for his one-man musical vessel called Crystal Shipsss. Before setting sail through a sonic seascape of innovative, industrial and introspective songs that share the same wavelengths as early Jesus & Mary Chain, the Pale Saints and the Boo Radleys, Faurholt set up a port of call in Berlin. ?I have been fascinated with the artistic energy of Berlin since I irst visited in 1999,? says Faurholt, who (prior to Crystal Shipsss) recorded ive albums. These works include a collaboration with legendary producer and engineer, Kramer, best known for his work with Galaxie 500, Low, and Daniel Johnston. Faurholt embarked on writing and recording the songs that became the album ?Yay? in the summer of 2010, in between acting jobs as an extra for German soap operas. ?I only recorded when I felt inspired, and with the idea of just making music without overthinking it,? explains Faurholt, whose Berlin apartment has guitars, ukuleles, tambourines, a piano and melodica in place of furniture. While the Crystal Shipsss? debut album does boast conventional songwriting, Jacob?s living room production expands upon the experimental aspect of albums such as David Bowie?s ?Heroes? and the simple wisdom of Galaxie 500?s ?On Fire?. Nearly every song on ?Yay? takes the listener on a less-than two-minute trip through a ?light and airy to heavy fuzzed out journey into Faurholt?s extraordinary range as a songwriter,? (Floorshime Zipper Boots). ?Yay? has gleaned other positive reviews through its limited cassette release via Portuguese label, Cakes and Tapes. Over the years Faurholt has played a long list of shows, sharing the stage with bands such as The Black Heart Procession, CocoRosie, Efterklang, and Grizzly Bear. http://crystalshipsss.bandcamp.com/ Limited Room Capacity up to 150 persons come on time to avoid disappointment ! A calculatedly hysterical melting pot of This Heat, Robert Wyatt, Faust and The Residents, musique concr?te and ethno-folk, all seen through a prism of occasionally theatrical improvisations and unhinged set pieces. Formed in 1995, and after several self-released tapes & cdrs, VTB so excited Nurse With Wound?s Steven Stapleton that he brought his United Dairies label out of cold storage to release their first album proper, ?The Inhazer Decline?, in 2000. Since then, they?ve released music on such labels as Misra, Beta-Lactam Ring, Textile, Digitalis, Pickled Egg, Alt Vinyl, and No-Fi as well as their own imprints Volucan & Volfurten. On record, Volcano The Bear offer stark and stunning absurdities, in the most bizarrely beautiful way. VTB live is the duo of Daniel Padden & Aaron Moore (third member, the rarely seen but often heard Clarence Manuelo no longer performs live, but his inimitable sounds and influence are still very much a part of a VTB performance). In their unique, often chaotic live shows, the adrenalin and invention drips from their earlobes as they thrust spectacular oddities in the faces of their audiences, always aided by their sublime multi-instrumentalism. Live collaborations have included performances with Canadian film maker & improvisor Michael Snow and Swedish free jazz legend Mats Gustafsson. Aside from their work in Volcano The Bear the members are constantly busy with other projects. Padden?s much-heralded group ?The One Ensemble? explores an experimental chamber-folk soundworld, and he regularly creates music for film and theatre. He has recorded several solo albums, and has performed with Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra, Bill Wells, Fred Lonberg-Holm and NY poet Bob Holman. Moore?s other projects are wide and varied including Parisian based improv group ?Textile Orchestra?, primal punk/folk outfit ?Amolvacy? (with members of NNCK) and long distance collaborations with Argentinian improvisor Alan Courtis, LAFMS founder Tom Recchion and Thierry Muller (Ilitch). He has also performed many times with Japan?s ?Boredoms? as well as Paul Dunmall, Jeremy Barnes, Steve Mackay and C Spencer Yeh. Once seen, never forgotten, or as this review from 2007?s Avanto festival puts it: ?Volcano The Bear?combines improvisation and playful experimentation with a conception of music that borders on the anthropological. Their extensive knowledge of the traditions of both experimental and folk music, combined with their other influences, makes the band a difficult one to categorise. Absurd humour and eclectic ways of producing sounds are characteristic of VTB?s live performances. Familiar themes can be introduced as milestones on a journey towards a result which remains unknown. The band records everything they play, and uses these recordings as raw material for their albums. For Volcano The Bear, post-processing is part of composing; their records are reminiscent of how This Heat and Faust used collage methods in rock music? The surprise element of their performances is further emphasized by the fact that their records ? combinations of disciplined studio work and recorded improvisation ? often sound nothing like the music played by the band on stage.? ???????????????????????????????????????? #421: 2013.05.19 recently lu?s antero, curator of the green field recordings label, and producer of the radio show o colecionador de sons (the sound collector), invited me to produce a piece to celebrate one of the last broadcasts of his show before leaving on an extended hiatus. it was an honor, and i took the opportunity to explore an idea that had recently come up. the resulting work, entitled 'raadio m?lu' (radio memory in estonian), debuted on his show last week, on the the 13th of may, and with lu?s' kind agreement i am rebroadcasting is as this week's edition of framework:afield. some further notes: raadio m?lu by patrick mcginley a few months ago i found a small portable radio, dating probably from the 1980?s and made during soviet times, is a secondhand shop in the small village of mooste in southeast estonia. i have a thing for old radios, so i bought it, and it got me to thinking about the place of radio, not in this present world of internet streaming, podcasting and so forth, but in our past, and in our memories. i know i have distinct memories of radio, radio stations, djs, events, situations, and even places that i relate to radio from my own past, growing up in boston, during my student days in western massachusetts, all the way through my years at the resonance fm studios in london, and my attempts now to listen to estonian radio to improve my language skills. i wondered if this particular radio, alien to me but possibly familiar to estonians, might trigger memories for those around me, and i decided to find out. i composed this piece from four elements: memories, stories and observations from a handful of estonians, related upon being presented with this particular radio for the first time; sonic material produced by the radio itself, both when tuned to and tuned between stations; field recordings from the surrounding landscape, vibrations in the immediate airwaves that have carried these radio signals; and archive material from estonian radio?s past, both in and before the country?s soviet era. the estonians interviewed were given the choice of speaking in their native language or in english; two chose estonian, and two english. i have left the estonian language untranslated in the audio itself ? much of what is being communicated can be heard in the tones of their voices, and through shared vocabulary. that said, i am providing written translations for the estonian language sections on the framework website - just visit the entry for the show, under the 'latest' tab this week, or by searching for show #421. again, we are always looking for new material, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated framework:afield series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address at the bottom of this mail. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! ????????????????????????????????????????????? CD-R Release / Limited ? 100 copies. (7 tracks) *e-Saxbow*, Contemporary electroacoustic duo. ( Fran?ois Wong : electric saxophone / Florent Colautti : e-String ) about : Electronic bows controlled via computer; A saxophone's* *sound transformed by wave modulators... The e-SaxBow duo triggers a frontal shock between electronic and acoustic music. Noise and melody create living and vibrating matter. In their plastic and experimental research, Florent Colautti and Fran?ois Wong build original sound material of wave motions, organic masses, synthetic rains, abstract sounds and cosmic bells. Florent plays e-String, an hybrid home-made electroacoustic instrument. With a computer, he controls electronic bows and stimulates the strings. The collected vibrations are transformed into sound... Fran?ois amplifies a saxophone with a mouthpiece microphone. The wave is transformed by an analogic/numeric set of effects and played through a tube amplifier. This album is also available via Bandcamp : http://florentcolautti.bandcamp.com/album/polyphasie Tracks composed and recorded : Nov 2012 in Grim (Marseille, France). ?picture by Vincent Munier Infos : http://www.corpselectriques.org Contact : corps.electriques at gmail.com -- ___________________________________ http://www.corpselectriques.org/ ___________________________________ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
