------------------------- #406: 2013.02.03 a recent visit to budapest meant the opportunity to make another edition of framework:ephemera, this time with composer and label curator ?kos garai, who was kind enough to invite us into his home, serve us some wonderfully dry tokaji, and show up a bit of his city. if you don't know already, framework:ephemera is our newest show format, where we visit an artist or curator in their own space, and ask them to make selections from their own music collections for an edition of the show. ?kos showed us around town; we walked from his home through buda towards the danube, and on its banks near the university we discussed the selections he had made for the show: something of a look back in time, a collection of what might be called 'classic' works, that i'm sure many of us remember from the early/mid 90's, by names that certainly should be familiar if they are not, john duncan, jim o'rourke, bernhard g?nter, giancarlo toniutti... these are the artists that got me interested in the world of sound in the first place, and it seems so as well for ?kos. ?kos requested that the show be pieced together with a certain element of randomness, which i tried to do by randomly selecting the tracks and excerpts from the works he provided and allowing them the fade and layer in whatever order they fell. the result, i think, is quite a compelling soundscape, that allows us, as ?kos put it, to drop into it, rather than follow from point a to point b. for more information on our guest and his work you can have a look at his own website (http://akosgarai.wordpress.com), as well as that of his label, 3leaves (http://3leaves-label.com), now entering its 4th year, and having just released its 20th work, featured in this show, annea lockwood's 'soundmap of the housatonic river', another testament to the smallness of the world, as this meeting in budapest brings back the memories of the 4 years i myself spent alongside the housatonic during my time at university in western massachusetts. again, we are always looking for new material, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated framework:afield series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address at the bottom of this mail. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! Judith Barry. * Judith Barry's installations can be considered to be *an intersection of different disciplines (architecture, sculpture, film, video, performance) forged in the seventies when postmodern theories first arrived on the art scene.* A substantial part of Barry's work, which is closely linked to feminism, revolves around issues of gender identity and the relationship between individuals and the urban environment. With the idea of documenting the work of artists in the MACBA Collection, FONS ?UDIO talks with Judith Barry. Link: http://rwm.macba.cat/en/specials/fons_judith_barry/capsula Related info: http://rwm.macba.cat/en/specials/fons_judith_barry/capsula Educated at UC Berkeley in the seventies, in an academic context marked by the radical changes that took place in the sixties as a result of the convergence of structuralism, psychoanalysis, semiotics and media theory, Judith Barry (Columbus, 1954) went on to develop an artistic practice that is closely linked to research. In her pieces, which have roots in performance and links to other disciplines, but are mainly presented as installations, theory is just as important as form, which is often based on a cumulative strategy. Through these interplays of overlapping ideas and images, Barry creates ambivalent spaces that highlight the tensions between conceptual coldness and sensual impulses. In spite of a self-confessed lack of formal continuity, it is not difficult to understand Barry?s body of work as a whole, as a coherent evolution, thanks to recurring elements such as the treatment of space (urban, architectural, personal) and the use of architecture as metaphor, which have been pivotal in much of her career. In a kind of extension of Henri Lefebvre?s ideas on the social production of space, Barry often uses architecture as a means by which to make political, economic or gender conventions visible. In her work, complex networks of social relationships that resist representation become macrophysical structures that spectators can interact with almost intuitively. In this process of reification, film plays a key role: Barry takes advantage of the almost universal nature of cinema and the familiarity of its language to transmit ideas, evoke sensations and create an interplay between the memories and experiences of spectators and the sound and visual stimuli of the piece. 'Echo' (1986) and 'In the Shadow of the City... Vam p r y' (1985), the two works by Barry in the MACBA Collection, are, in fact, good examples of this superimposition of audiovisual materials that favours the multiplicity of readings that is a characteristic of all her installations. Barry?s non-linear compositions invite spectators to constantly change their viewpoint, and urge them towards critical analysis, to question their own position in respect to the work and their conceptual and narrative baggage. In this dense fog of analogies, popular iconography, film culture and formal elements from advertising, Barry builds multi-stable structures: plays on perspective that are more ideological than visual, in which nothing is what it seems, and where the collision between images, sounds, signs and symbols can always be reinterpreted from another point of view. A tidal wave of probes and experiments into new musical resources and new organisational practices ploughed through both disciplines, bringing parts of each onto shared terrain before rolling on to underpin a new aesthetics able to follow sound and its manipulations beyond the narrow confines of ?music?. This series tries analytically to trace and explain these developments, and to show how, and why, both musical and post-musical genres take the forms they do. PROBES #3 continues to explore probes into pitch ? this time through its effective obliteration through ceaseless movement, sliding tones, and radical portamenti which defy all quantisation. After 14 years of activity as a composer, Mathias Delplanque has refined his art to the point where, at age 39, he delivers a true masterpiece called Chutes. After several years spent creating highly conceptualized sound installations and electroacoustic compositions (Ma chambre quand je n?y suis pas being one of many highlights), Delplanque has designed for himself a work station that allows him to step away from a studio?s logic to record, transform, edit and mix sound sources all at once in a live setting. Using real objects, instrument samples and computer, he spontaneously builds aural gems that hide a frantic level of activity under their occasionally serene looks. And that frenzy is not fake, since all the tracks on this album are edited from live solo performances (recorded between 2010 and 2012), with no overdubs. Mathias Delplanque is active in several new music spheres, as a composer, an improviser, a performer, a music reviewer, and a teacher. He is known in electronica circles under the monikers Lena, Bidlo, and Stensil. In the field of sound art, he makes sound installations, electroacoustic compositions, field recordings, and more recently electronic improvisations. He owns the Bruit Clair label. Chutes is being released on CD by the French independent label Baskaru. Baskaru publishes only a few carefully-selected releases each year. Its previous productions (including albums by Maurizio Bianchi, Gintas K, Francisco L?pez, Yochi Machida, Stephan Mathieu, Parallel_41, Ethan Rose, and Frank Rothkamm) have already established high artistic and visual standards. One can not be at the same time all eye and all ear." Robert Bresson - Notes on Cinematography The cinema of Manoel de Oliveira features a careful balance of image, sound, and silence. Long takes and static frames call attention to the rich auditory elements present in each scene. In this hour of Framework:Afield, we are going to explore the soundtrack of Oliveira?s non-dialogue scenes by separating the audio from its image. These sounds depict daily life in pastoral Portuguese landscapes. In the context of radio, they become the focal point while new visual layers are free to form in the listener?s imagination. The sounds presented in this collage are not organized according to the films? chronology or storylines. Rather, they are grouped as much as possible according to other properties like volume, pitch, and intensity of the samples as well as by common themes like footsteps, wind blowing, characters breathing, wood creaking, etc. The sounds were taken from the following films: The Hunt (1963), Past and Present (1972), Benilde or The Virgin Mother (1975), Voyage to the Beginning of the World (1997), My Case (1987), The Cannibals (1988), Word and Utopia (2000), The Uncertainty Principle (2002), Belle Toujours (2006) and Eccentricities of a Blonde-haired Girl (2009). At the age of 80, he hit the pace of making one film per year. Today, Oliveira is 104 years old and still going ? the world?s oldest active filmmaker. Radio Maghreb. Curated by Alan Bishop Message-ID: *New podcast: INTERRUPTIONS #10. Radio Maghreb. Curated by Alan Bishop * In this project Alan Bishop vindicates the use of radio as an electronic instrument in a journey through time and space that unearths old recordings from the AM and FM airwaves made during his first trip to Spain and Morocco in 1983. Link: http://rwm.macba.cat/en/curatorial/interruptions_10_alan_bishop_radio_maghreb/capsula Playlist: http://rwm.macba.cat/uploads/20130211/10Interruptions_eng.pdf It all began for me in Saginaw, Michigan, where radio was the primary portal to instantaneous information in the world. A decade before satellite TV emerged and approximately thirty years before the internet transformed the way people receive their news and entertainment, my father bought me a cheap portable radio with shortwave, weather, police, and AM/FM bands. I was nine years old. I had other radios to listen to, but this one was different. It offered me more than the standard AM medium-wave frequencies which dominated the device in the sixties (FM was insignificant at the time). I was captivated with the possibilities of shortwave reception and so began my obsession with the radio. For me it was an explosive, vital source of an almost endless variety of sounds. Combine this fact with the ever-changing reception possibilities of geographic movement and it could be argued that the radio is the most unique and resourceful electronic sound instrument ever devised. By 1980, I was experimenting with sound collage, utilizing snippets of television and radio sounds incorporated with my original music and field recordings. In May of 1983, I traveled to Marbella, Spain, with my brother and a friend. The plan was to spend a few weeks in a flat owned by a cousin and then move south to Morocco. We spent the days busking the streets with guitars to support our food and drink. In the evenings I would scan the local radio. I began to record snippets of music from Radio Tangier International from Morocco, which I was receiving in Spain on a portable cassette radio recorder. The variety of music they were programming was astounding: jazz and be-bop, Egyptian and Lebanese orchestral classics, Moroccan folk music, Indian film soundtracks, late sixties psychedelic rock, French chanteuse, etc. I had never heard anything so diverse transmitting from one source. After recording selected songs, I began capturing the commercials, bumper music spots, station IDs and news broadcasts. This process continued as I crossed the strait of Gibraltar and landed in Morocco where I spent the next two months. Listening to local radio stations is a logical and effective way to immediately tap into the possibilities of what music styles exist in a country or region. My original intention of recording radio was to capture a snippet of a song so that I could play it for a clerk at a local record store to find out the artist name and song title and then purchase that album or cassette. As I began to record radio segments consecutively onto cassette, I noticed there was a strange, yet beautiful and informal sound collage being formed. Then I began manipulating the radio for this effect intentionally. My aim was to create audio collage in real time, although I eventually became quite adept at editing segments together (Radio Algeria has more than 70 cuts, Radio Sumatra over 100 edits). Radio Morocco was the first collage I assembled in the regional/national radio source format. After recording many hours of meticulously selected audio, I simply sequenced my favorite segments together to form an hour long mix which I felt represented the most satisfying listening experience for me. I had no idea that, 21 years later, it would become the first commercially released locale-specific radio collage. I employed a combination of AM, FM and shortwave broadcasts which featured everything from local Berber music to popular Moroccan and Egyptian songs and international news stations like the BBC, Radio France, and Radio China. keep reading You can find the previous installments of this series here . A large component of her music is improvised and her approach to this is extremely personal and visceral. Her playing explores the combination and layering of a homemade analog synthesizer, preparations and traditional and extended techniques in both the voice and cello. She works to join these elements into a singular ecstatic personal language. JD ZAZIE (IT) - Turntables and field recordings http://www.burpenterprise.com/burp/articoli/jd-zazie/ Coming from a DJ and a radiophonic background JD Zazie has explored over the years different approaches of real-time manipulation on fixed recorded sound. The typology of the sound-sources varies from already existing audio publications and sound effects, to self recorded audio files ? as live-set and field-recordings -, to selected pre-mixed material. Juxtaposition, decontextualization, fragmentation, repetition, sonic texture, scratch and error are elements of the grammar adopted to relate, organize and rearrange the sound material following her "?pfelzerst?rer?s method". Full details about the conference are available below. ------------------------------------ Remote Encounters: Connecting bodies, collapsing spaces and temporal ubiquity in networked performance keywords: performance, networked, body, space, place, time, real, virtual URL: http://remote-encounters.tumblr.com/ :: Description :: Since the internet entered the public domain in the early 90's there has been an explosion in artistic interest in its use as a means, site and context for creative practice. Much of this practice is performative in nature; ether originating from a performance background and using the internet as a new site and/or augmenting aspect of that practice or is a form of practice developed as direct response to the internet and becomes performative to some degree in its spectatorship. It has been well established that the internet is not the first or only example of the use of a networked technology repurposed for creative practice. There is a clear time line that can be traced back through the practice of Roy Ascott and his coining of the term Telematic Art in the 1980's to artist's use of satellite networks, telephone and other telecommunication devices as each were invented. Seen in this respect the internet can be considered as one of many networked technologies that has enabled networked performance. The internet is unique however in that it is not a singular network type that favours a particular form of media, broadcast or spectatorship. Most famously known as the network of networks it enables multiple protocols of which the world wide web's http is just one, is multimedia in nature and encourages intertextual folding and layering of media, is multi-directional not simply a broadcast communication form, de-centralised in ownership and the majority of its technologies are openly accessible. Remote Encounters, a two-day international conference with performance evening, aims to explore the use of networks as a means to enhance or create a wide variety of performance arts. How do networks as a site for performance provide opportunities for us as artists and performers? In particular how can we remotely collaborate, merge geographically separate places and times, reconfigure the space of performance and the relationship between artist and audience? :: Conference information :: Registration: Fee - academic affiliated ?100, non-affiliated ?50 Location: ATRiuM, Cardiff School of Creative & Cultural Industries, University of Glamorgan, Adam Street, Cardiff, Wales, CF24 2FN. because, folks, this week is resonance 104.4fm's annual fundraiser. i know you're used to hearing me beg for money to fill my own greedy little coffers, but you don't often here me begging to fill someone else's. but that's what i'm doing: this week, please show your support for one of the world's greatest radio stations. visit http://www.resonancefm.com and give, generously. visit the auction page and bid on all the amazing bits of paraphernalia they've got on offer (including a haunch of venison, an actual piece of the original wicker man, and even a full set of the framework:seasonal series). buy t-shirts. or just donate freely out of the goodness of your heart. keep resonancefm on the air! and to show that our money is where our mouth is (mouths are?), here is our pledge: all donations to framework radio between now the end of the fundraiser on the 21st - nay, let's even say until the broadcast of our next show on the 24th - will be split even-steven with resonance, a full 50%. so this week you can order copies of all your favorite framework:seasonal releases, knowing that a full ?10 of each ?20 donation will be passed on to resonancefm. what do you say to that? this week brings us great, great sounds, with the continuation of our aporee maps segment, self-released sounds from finland and the uk, free online downloads from spain, woodpile-building worksongs from here in estonia, and 400Hz from the united states. these last come from jason sloan, who's own explanation of his work, '400Hz' will do it more justice than i could. he describes it as: "multiple layered binaural field recordings adjusted to 400Hz, the average constant frequency in the natural environment where the audio was captured, created at the wave farm in acra, new york during the first 20 minutes of each hour beginning at 12am until 6am on october 27, 2012." again, we are always looking for new material, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated framework:afield series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address at the bottom of this mail. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! ------------------------- (time / artist / track / album / label) 00:00 - 03:21 / jason sloan / framework introduction http://jasonsloan.com 01:53 - 07:20 / olga palom?ki / formation / manipulated (sounds for headphones) / [self-release] http://olgapalomaki.net 04:08 - 06:18 / suavas levy / passenger lift @ tuwima 40 / ?o?dz?, polska / aporee maps http://aporee.org/maps/?loc=16562 04:56 - 12:40 / dithernoise / minimal set 01.03.12 / - / - http://www.dithernoise.net 07:55 - 18:35 / asf?rico / [extract 1] / sonidos del subconsciente I / galverna http://www.asferico.net, http://www.galaverna.org 14:47 - 17:49 / james wyness / jed forest / threap / [self-release] http://www.wyness.org 17:12 - 21:57 / taavi tatsi (w/ mari & andreas kalkun) / lelo lelo / - / - http://hakihely.blogspot.com, http://www.marikalkun.com 19:02 - 21:36 / micha? "Come join us before the opening ceremonies of Sonic Acts festival for the initial preview of new media and sound artist Marco Donnarumma?s latest work, Nigredo. Nigredo (Marco Donnarumma, 2013), developed during a residency at STEIM, is designed as a private 8 minute artwork to be experienced by one visitor at a time. The work draws from studies in analytical psychology, human sensory system, and biotechnology so to create an intimate and uncanny experience of one?s internal self. The work uses ad hoc biofeedback methods and wearable bioacoustic technology to create feedback systems within the visitor?s own body through sound (bioacoustics) and bioelectric signals. The senses are heightened beyond their natural threshold, so as to induce an intense experience between viscera and perception. The term Nigredo comes originally from alchemy, where it is referred to as putrefaction or decomposition. In order to create the philosopher?s stone, alchemists would produce a homogeneous black matter by slowly cooking all their ingredients at once. Later in the framework of analytical psychology, the term Nigredo became a metaphor for the moment of despair and disillusionment caused by a spiralling descent into the dark unknowns of the subconscious mind. The techniques used in this artwork are completely safe, however, be aware that the work includes high sound pressure level, pulsating lights, and induced body vibration." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PLEASE NOTE: Private showings will happen every ten minutes from 11h-14h and 15h-18h Due to the limited number of available slots it is recommended to reserve in advance. Mu?oz conceived and made these works specifically for radio so that they would circulate through the airwaves at a particular moment of the day and reach listeners who had tuned in, either by choice or by chance. R?dio Web MACBA is going back to these radio works with the aim of bringing them to a wider audience and having them recognised as an additional element of the artist's work along with the sculpture and writing he carried out simultaneously and without a break. "Building for Music" (1993), "A Man in a Room Gambling" (1992), "Will it Be a Likeness"? (1996) and "A Registered Patent" (2001-2002) use sound, the voice and music as their basic raw materials. They all have something in common ? an element that was of special interest to the artist: they had to be broadcast on public radio stations. *JUAN MU?OZ'S WORKS FOR RADIO. Here, in comparison, and according to the topic of the city phenomenon, I was conceptually intrigued by layering sounds until disorientation results. Is it not characteristic for the city that it visually and acoustically overwhelms the individual, and that the individual constantly tries to orient itself by filtering and excluding input? "Where am I? Who am I? Where did I want to go to, and what for? What does it have to do with me? Do I understand what I hear? Do the things I hear speak to me or not, do they stabilize my identity or rather erode it? - Starting point for that journey was a homage to Charles Christophes? musical method of ?undirected? composing that I like very much; by putting pieces of his together, however, thematic tendencies happened to result. So this earscape is an expedition into the Global City of Japan, France, India, the Netherlands, the United States, Kenia, Denmark, Thailand, Canada, Great Britain, Germany and Italy. The piece presented here is a condensed version exclusively mixed for framework. Enjoy some chaos!" again, we are always looking for new material, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated framework:afield series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address at the bottom of this mail. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! ------------------------- (source notes) Intro / Textures 1? - 21? John Hegre is half of Jazzkammer and the latest addition to Noxagt. His guitar and sound work is heard on numerous releases both solo and in collaboration with Maja Ratkje, Lasse Marhaug, Der Brief, Kaptein Kaliber and others. Jean-Philippe Gross is involved in the field of improvisation and experimental music since late 90?s, longtime collaboration with Xavier Charles, Clare Cooper, J?r?me Noetinger, Will Guthrie, John Hegre & Jazkamer http://www.grrrndzero.org/site2/images/stories/NEWMP3/BLACKPACKERS_extrait.mp3http://vimeo.com/48355475 RUST Rusting is a natural process of oxidation ? often associated with neglect, deterioration, decay and ruin ? whose aesthetic dimensions tend to be overlooked. Examined closely, a piece of rusted iron reveals a fantastic richness of colors, textures and forms. The duo Rust takes its name from an appreciation of this specific kind of spontaneously arising natural beauty, most commonly encountered when human constructions are exposed to the natural elements. Rust consists of Jean-Fran?ois Laporte playing newly-invented acoustic instruments andBenjamin Thigpen playing the computer. Laporte?s acoustic instruments are often built around the use of compressed air, vibrating membranes and tubes; Thigpen?s electronic instruments frequently involve complex signal processing, gestural inputs and arbitrary mathematical processes. In both cases, the instruments intentionally occupy a space at the limits of human control ? retaining, in spite of their extreme sophistication, a primitive organic element akin to that of natural processes. The music of Rust is deeply rooted in the specificity of each component of their instruments at each particular moment in time. Arising through the uncertain interactions between willed human intervention and autonomous activities in the physical and digital worlds, it explores unpredictable, unstable processes that exhibit a life and will of their own. Based on physical materiality and acoustic realities, it interacts strongly with the acoustics of the concert space, filling the hall with complex webs of physically palpable strands and blocks of sound. Rust does not believe that music is an intellectual activity but rather that it is a total physical experience, powerfully enveloping and sweeping away the entire being ? mind, body, soul and all their interconnections with the physical and spiritual universes. The music of Rust is not based on learnedly elaborate constructions (com-position: the putting-together of isolated elements) but on the sheer power of sound itself: dense textures, rich colors, constantly evolving soundworlds, complex polyphonies emerging from within a single sound. Organic and authentic, intense and primal ? at times barely perceptible, at times extremely loud ? it is an immersion in the pure experience of sound. https://soundcloud.com/totemcontemporain/rust http://totemcontemporain.com/ | more info | -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
