or more to get a copy of framework:seasonal!) or commit to a regular monthly contribution (5? or more per month gets you each new issue as they are released!). you can commit to as little as 1? per month ? think about it. that?s practically nothing. but if every regular framework listener would sign up to contribute just 1? per month i would never have to run another fundraiser again. really folks! you have been very generous, but we haven't had a single new subscriber sign up during this fund-raiser. consider subscribing to make a regular contribution - it's easier on the budget and can be a big, big help. so go to the framework website, make a one-time or regular monthly contribution, whatever you can afford, and show us you care. this week we heard tracks from our release by yannick dauby with olivier f?raud, stefan paulus, and francisco lopez. also great works from seth chrisman, adrian dziewanski, mathias delplanque, and a framework introduction recorded for us under a bridge in castewellan park in northern island by barry cullen. again, we are always looking for new material, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated framework:afield series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address at the bottom of this mail. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! ------------------------- (time / artist / track / album / label) 00:00 - 03:53 / barry cullen / framework introduction http://www.myspace.com/barryselectricworkshop 01:52 - 06:38 / seth chrisman / la resolana / aetherdrift, do you copy / flaming pines http://effervescent-airwaves.blogspot.com, http://www.flamingpines.com 04:14 - 09:17 / mathias delplanque / so / chutes / baskaru http://www.mathiasdelplanque.com, http://www.baskaru.com 09:17 - 15:00 / yannick dauby & olivier f?raud / thorenc, 5 janvier 2013 / framework:seasonal, spring 2013 / framework editions http://www.kalerne.net, http://www.ethnographiques.org/Feraud_Olivier, http://www.frameworkradio.net/seasonal 15:07 - 23:58 / adrian dziewanski / [track 1] / island terminus / gruenrekorder http://scrapyardforecast.blogspot.com, http://www.gruenrekorder.de 16:59 - 25:18 / mathias delplanque / v / chutes / baskaru http://www.mathiasdelplanque.com, http://www.baskaru.com 25:18 - 34:56 / stefan paulus / a journey into a spatial fold / framework:seasonal, spring 2013 / framework editions http://psychogeography.blogsport.de, http://www.frameworkradio.net/seasonal 34:58 - 40:00 / seth chrisman / nutations abound / aetherdrift, do you copy / flaming pines http://effervescent-airwaves.blogspot.com, http://www.flamingpines.com 35:33 - 40:00 / adrian dziewanski / [track 2] / island terminus / gruenrekorder http://scrapyardforecast.blogspot.com, http://www.gruenrekorder.de 37:12 - 39:50 / mathias delplanque / flo / chutes / baskaru http://www.mathiasdelplanque.com, http://www.baskaru.com 40:00 - 53:57 / francisco lopez / untitled#293 / framework:seasonal, spring 2013 / framework editions http://www.franciscolopez.net, http://www.frameworkradio.net/seasonal 53:57 - 57:00 / seth chrisman / LR / aetherdrift, do you copy / flaming pines http://effervescent-airwaves.blogspot.com, http://www.flamingpines.com ------------------------- framework intro submissions: 1) take yourself and an audio recorder to a location of your choice 2) record for AT LEAST 1 minute before you - 3) read aloud the following text (in english or translated): welcome to framework. framework is a show consecrated to field-recording, and its use in composition. field-recording, phonography, the art of sound hunting; open your ears and listen! 4) continue recording for AT LEAST 2 minutes after the text 5) post the recording to us on any format, or send us an mp3 ??????????????????????????????? Early Piano Works and Ranch Message-ID: Dear Friend of Magnetized Messages, I have two tapes out. This didn't happen because of the increasing popularity of cassette tape as a publishing medium, but because I strictly use cassettes and cassette players ever since I started to work with sound. Therefore you find on both tapes sounds I recorded and mixed together in a narrative sense. Where-as Early Piano Works marks my approach as it was in the first decade of the century, Ranch is a result of my latest attitude, which is to adopt orphanaged tapes and use them in the compositions and performances. Early Piano Works is released in Paris by HAK lofi Records in an edition of fifty copies. More information here> http://v.gd/KMNNfR Ranch is a self release in twenty (different) copies. After the completion of his studies in Sweden, he has studied sonology for a year at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Den Haag, Netherlands. During these years, he attended many summer composition master courses (Centre Acanthes in France) where he studied with Pierre Boulez, Iannis Xenakis, Olivier Messiaen, and Georges Aperghis. He has produced numerous works in the fields of both acoustic and electronic music and has written 3 pieces for large orchestra, an opera and several chamber music works. Karkowski was also a founding member of the electroacoustic music performance trio Antoine Chessex is a composer and sound artist born in 1980 in Vevey, Switzerland, with a background as a saxophone player and performer. His sonic researches include compositions for ensembles, solo works and sound installations. Chessex?s works are based on the exploration of the physicality of sounds and spaces and deal with acoustic as much as electronic and electroacoustic mediums. His solo works feature dense layers of sustained pitches reacting with the architecture of the space or massive clouds of amplified sax resulting in intense live actions in total immersion in the sound. He presents his works worldwide and appears at numerous international festivals and venues in the U.S.A, Russia, Japan, China and all around Europe. http://www.soundimplant.com/achessex.html Trio Brachiale ? Alberto de Campo, Dominik Hildebrand Marques Lopes, Hannes Hoelzl. TRIO BRACHIALE ? Can one improvise with computers and electronics in lively, expressive, complex ways, change directions instantly, and communicate within a common flow? trio brachiale likes to think: yes! They have bred their soft- and hardware in a direction that allows for spontaneity like traditional instrumentalists are used to. Add all the surprises the computers can offer as an intelligent music partner. Navigating this space of possibility becomes a breathtaking cybernetic endeavor; the band name roughly indicates what the result will sound like. Alberto de Campo has a background in classical composition and jazz guitar before focusing on electronic / computer music. He teaches Generative Art / Computational Art at the Arts University Berlin, and creates complex installation works, often with teams involving students and guests. He works with artists and musicians like Florian Hecker, Marcus Schmickler, and many others, and performs in a wide variety of contexts. http://albertodecampo.net Dominik Hildebrand Marques Lopes has a degree in audio and video engineering from the Institute for Music and Media D?sseldorf. Currently he studies Arts and Media (Meisterschueler) at UdK Berlin, focusing on multichannel sound installations, improvised electronic music, building kinetic/cybernetic (sound-)objects, musical recording, and live-coding. As a computer musician, his main focus is on developing and performing with physical musical interfaces which, due to their constrains and functionality, have unique behaviour (or even life of their own) equally rich as many acoustic instruments. This approach leads to very direct (body) control of computational processes which can also be easily experienced as such by the audience. Dominik Hildebrand Marques Lopes is a member of ?Trio Brachiale?, ?Republic111?, ?Patchwork Family? and the ?Society for Nontrivial Pursuits?. Hannes Hoelzl is an experimental musician and sound artist. He performs on self-devised electronic instruments in contexts of contemporary, jazz and noise music, as well as in dance and theatre productions and has played with hans w. koch, Zhang Jien, Josef Suchy, Mario de Vega, amongst many others. He is member of PowerBooks_UnPlugged, a qu__tet lectric and the Solar Sound Ensemble. His sound installations have been exhibited in various musea and galleries throughout Europe and east Asia. He is lecturer of sound at the Bremen Academy of Arts and guest professor at UdK Bremen. In Trio Brachiale, he appears with his Harmolodica, and other digital/analog/hybrid instruments. http://www.earweego.net From ll at detritus.net Sun Apr 7 05:54:11 2013 From: ll at detritus.net (ll) Date: Sun, 7 Apr 2013 11:54:11 +0200 Subject: [microsound-announce] ( nula ) new filecast: 56390 a beacon. mp3, 9 minutes. Much of this practice is performative in nature; ether originating from a performance background and using the internet as a new site and/or augmenting aspect of that practice or is a form of practice developed as direct response to the internet and becomes performative to some degree in its spectatorship. It has been well established that the internet is not the first or only example of the use of a networked technology repurposed for creative practice. There is a clear time line that can be traced back through the practice of Roy Ascott and his coining of the term Telematic Art in the 1980's to artist's use of satellite networks, telephone and other telecommunication devices as each were invented. Seen in this respect the internet can be considered as one of many networked technologies that has enabled networked performance. The internet is unique however in that it is not a singular network type that favours a particular form of media, broadcast or spectatorship. Most famously known as the network of networks it enables multiple protocols of which the world wide web's http is just one, is multimedia in nature and encourages intertextual folding and layering of media, is multi-directional not simply a broadcast communication form, de-centralised in ownership and the majority of its technologies are openly accessible. Remote Encounters, a two-day international conference with performance evening, aims to explore the use of networks as a means to enhance or create a wide variety of performance arts. How do networks as a site for performance provide opportunities for us as artists and performers? FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATA : SALON IV MICHAEL PALUMBO / RISA DICKENS GUEST CURATOR: JAMES FINNERTY Montr?al, 12th April 2013 ? Eastern Bloc presents the fourth Data : Salon of the season, with invited artists Michael Palumbo and Risa Dickens. For this edition of the 2012-13 Data : Salon series, the event will be guest curated by the electroacoustic composer and producer James Finnerty. Data : Salon IV 24 April 2013 7pm ? 10pm Michael Palumbo presents ?CrossTalk?, an electroacoustic performance in which the audience and two singers interact with each other through a single augmented instrument, developed using the visual programming software PureData. The instrument analyzes the performers? incoming signals and maps them to signal-processing parameter-controls in real time. An extension of using music information retrieval technology to control actions and processing, ?CrossTalk? maps the control data to the opposite performer and therefore each singer is at once both a performer, and controller of the other?s signal. This multidimensional interaction between the performers and audience invites all parties to question who is the performer, what is the instrument, and who is in control? Risa Dickens presents ?Pass on?, an interdisciplinary work-in-progress combining embroidery and fabric arts, illustration on blank wooden nesting dolls, a pattern of QR codes, and live performance. The performance involves music and storytelling, with narrator and musicians situated within a space populated by the illustrated dolls and embroidered dressmaker dummies sitting on tables draped with a fabric bearing a pattern of codes that link out to a website of digital files. The files accessed via QR codes include audio excerpts of interviews with family members, old family photos, and songs. In these files and in the live performance, a story is pieced together about family: Dickens? grandmother who was a child soldier in the Danish Underground during the second world war; her great aunt who was born deaf and sent to live in a mental institution at the age of 5; her mother who works with the families of psychotics. The piece is about mental health and identity formation, the things we carry, and the things we pass on. This particular Data : Salon is curated by James Finnerty, a composer, producer and sound engineer currently completing a BFA in Electroacoustic Studies at Concordia University in Montreal. As a recording/mixing engineer and producer, Finnerty works in many different styles, including, pop, contemporary/classical, jazz and electroacoustic music. As a musician, he has contributed to several recordings and performed in a range of musical projects as a guitarist, vocalist and audio programmer. His sound design and electroacoustic compositions have been exhibited at the South Carolina BulldogBytes Concert Series, VAV Gallery, Toronto Electroacoustic Symposium, L?Envers, Concordia Greenhouse, DB Clark Theatre and the ONF Cin?Roboth?que. Finnerty?s curatorial intent was to exhibit two artists who have incorporated the voice as a primary component in their work. Their individual usage of this fundamental electroacoustic model reaches between two ends of a similar spectrum: with one work placing an emphasis on text as a carrier of narrative elements, and the other on the morphology of timbral qualities of the voice within a digital system. For its third consecutive year, the Data : Salon series invites current and potential members of Eastern Bloc to present a recent project or work-in-progress. From September 2012 to June 2013, the bi-monthly events, informal and open in nature, allow for direct and immediate feedback with the public. Participating artists are given access to the centre?s exhibition space, our technical resources, the team?s expertise and a range of documentation services and marketing tools. The artists are invited to submit their proposals in the field of New Media (audio/video installation, A/V performance, sound performance, interactive practices) throughout the 2012 ? 2013 season. The idea of having a festival which is defined by microtonality is to focus on those musics which cut across a wide range of genres which do, or attempt to, use differently tuned pitches to express a fresh emotional pallet. Whilst this may involve new compositional systems the emphasis is on the music rather than the systems although there is a channel - through open presentations ? for composers/theorists/instrument makers and designers to share and demonstrate their ideas. Where practicable and possible, EUROMicroFest may also include world music and/or historical music which is/was motivated by unconventional approaches to pitch or towards theories of expanding the conventional tonal system.? In current society there's the slight but relentless departure from the experience in a dedicated and public environment to a private one where perception is disturbed by the environment. The relation between music and image is quite complex as sound deals with the concept of environment: music can be a part of the meaning or just a furniture, and it could be also a distraction, but the focus of the work of this two italian sound artists is the peculiar quality of music to evoke images. The source recordings were processed and layered to make this album sounds like the soundtrack of an imaginary expressionist movie or as an experimental form of synphonic poem. When an electric current is sent through the rocks sporadic noise bursts from the speakers. With some fine tuning these rocks begin to behave like microphones, amplifying howling feedback and detecting subtle scratches and disturbances in their surrounding environment. Occasionally the circuit exhibits visual output coinciding with the audible in the form of small sparks and minute explosions occurring where the copper point contacts meet the surface of the rock. All depends on your ears," wrote Wafu in 1866 in Kyoto, according to David Rothenberg. This earscape is meant to zoom you right into the microscopic world of insects. For a lot of sound artists, this acoustic realm seems to be fascinating ? maybe primarily because the different scale of these beings also results in completely different dynamics of movement and articulation. "Insects" concentrates on this aspect; harvestmen fluttering around lamplights, myriads of maggots crawling on a compost pile, orientation flights of bees and cricket talks are examples of the rich morphology of insect sound. The range of sounds goes from untreated field recordings to highly refined electro-acoustic pieces, like that of Loufopoulos who wants the listener to experience "a journey on the back of a bee"; interlaced are anecdotal and abstract representations of mechanical, animal and human movement that broaden the range of suggestion. Some pieces, especially the older ones like Bouhalassa?s, are produced with considerable technical effort to create soundclouds from single samples before modern software systems easily allowed for these effects. So join in on an entertaining tour-de-force flight into the realm of bugs and critters! - d.l. lutz, berlin, germany again, we are always looking for new material, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated framework:afield series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address at the bottom of this mail. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! ????????????????????????????????????????????? SUPPORT FRAMEWORK! your contributions make framework possible. please consider signing up to become a regular monthly donor, or make a one-time contribution. as a thank-you for your subscription of ?5 or more, or your one-time donation of ?20 or more, we'll send you the latest issue of our framework:seasonal release series! we can't do it without you, and we greatly appreciate your support. ????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????? #418: 2013.04.28 so the official spring fundraiser is now over, many thanks to those who gave, and welcome to our new subscribers. we greatly appreciate your support, and please remember, just because the fundraiser is over does not mean we longer need your support! all issues of framework:seasonal remain available, and we still ask you, if you enjoy the show, to give when you can, and subscribe if you're able. we can't do it without you! this week we had the great pleasure of airing another edition of framework:ephemera, our occasional guest-selected regular edition, with conversation recorded with said guest in her or her hometown. this edition was enabled by recent travels in israel and palestine, where, while in tel aviv/jaffa, i was able to meet and talk with israeli musician / sound artist / teacher / networker eran sachs. eran picked great sounds for us from his collection, almost all of which were new to our airwaves, and had a lot to say about why he chose them. there is a site for eran's work coming soon; in the meantime you can search the great intratubes for his name, or that of his platform with co-conspirator alex drool, primate arena, and you will find many things. again, we are always looking for new material, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated framework:afield series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address at the bottom of this mail. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! ?????????????????????????????????????????????
