I then learned guitar by playing in a punk-rock band with mates from high-school/college. In France it was the big period of free-parties and I decided to make electronic music when I heard all the fucked-up sounds played by artists in Toulouse, which were kinda different from the basic techno crap (that was 1996). Naturally followed making noisy-weird sounds with mixer feedback and distorsion pedals and that's when computers appeared in my life. From Atari to PCs to linux, etc.. I learned programation because I wanted to understand how computer languages work. Now I'm a self-taught software developer and I program the synthesizers I use for making music (with SuperCollider mostly)." credits released 13 May 2012 Yvan Volochine, linux, supercollider and midi controller. Part II* Link: http://bit.ly/JkfdCi Related info: http://bit.ly/K5aG9q MP3: http://bit.ly/JNcQuI *A musical selection of some of the secret jewels found in Ed Veenstra?s record collection, specialised in Broken Music: records and paramusical works produced by visual artists and other avant-garde creators. * In the early sixties Milan Kn???k began experimenting with vinyl records by scratching, painting, burning or even breaking them. These fierce treatments affected not only radically the original compositions but also expanded the function of the records themselves. Because it was almost impossible to transfer the distorted sounds to standard sheet music, Kn???k considered the records with all their cuts, paint, punched holes, glue and scratches a new form of musical notation. Additionally the records became art objects. On February 18, 1988, Daadgalerie in Berlin opened its doors for Broken Music. The exhibition, curated by Ursula Block and Michael Glasmeier, featured objects, sleeves, and installations by visual artists with records as main source. Many of the exhibited works featured sound by visual artists. The exhibition catalogue containing theory, a historical overview and an extensive and illustrated discography is still influential and an asset for anyone interested in visual artists working with records as medium and/or sound. More than twenty years after the exhibition and the never reprinted catalogue the term Broken Music managed to survive as a genre although its definition seems to have narrowed down to just sound by visual artists. This audio-selection is mainly focused on visual artists for whom sound is an extension or component of their visual work. Some of the records you are about to hear were chosen because they are extraordinary rare. Some are here because they are. *Ed Veenstra, 2011* + info: Conversation with Ed Veenstra (PDF): http://rwm.macba.cat/en/extra/memorabilia_ed_veenstra_conversation/capsula MP3 of his lecture: http://rwm.macba.cat/uploads/twitter/memorabilia_ed_veenstra.mp3 Follow us at http://twitter.com/Radio_Web_MACBA -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The seminar will be taught by Arthur Sauer and Wouter Snoei, two of the core members of the The Game Of Life Foundation?s team. The foundation's unique mobile wave field synthesis system (composed of 192 speakers and 12 subwoofers) will be available on-site for participants to experiment and gain hands-on familiarity with space as a compositional parameter. Wave field synthesis is a technique for sound spatialization. It produces ?artificial? wave fronts synthesized by a large number of individually driven speakers. Such wave fronts seem to originate from a virtual starting point. Contrary to traditional spatialization techniques such as stereo, the localization of virtual sources in WFS does not depend on or change with the listener?s position. As opposed to most multichannel systems, WFS has no sweet spot and allows for a wider optimal listening area. Language: English Level: Aimed at musicians, composers, sound and media artists, music software developers. Participants will be organized into two groups according to their background and experience. The first group will work with a graphical GUI interface and requires just basic sound editing knowledge. The second group will use the SuperCollider interface to the wave field synthesis system and therefore requires previous familiarity with this environment. Tutors: Arthur Sauer and Wouter Snoei. A few months have passed since we've published anything, and that was due to a consolidation of the fabrication departments of the Agency under one roof. The sound and design studios were separated from the printing and corrosion services by a sizable body of water and one very long bridge; but now all is housed in one complex -- not entirely organized to our satisfaction, but good enough for us to begin soliciting sales for the latest publication -- a mesmerizing album of field recording and hallowed minimalism from Patrick McGinley (aka Murmer). This is the second of McGinley's albums that we have been blessed to release into the world, and it's quite a gem. We won't be issuing this for a few weeks -- July 3, in fact; but we are now accepting pre-orders on the album for those so inclined. With just 400 in limited production, we hope you would be inclined. And now, the details: Murmer /What Are The Roots That Clutch/ Helen Scarsdale : HMS022 : CD mail order price : $13.00 release date: July 3, 2012 It was a cavernous tone that broadcast from a ventilator duct that inspired Patrick McGinley to begin collecting field recordings and working them into his slow-arc compositions. At the time when he heard that particular tone in that particular city at that particular time, he had no gear to recording device on hand. Over the next fifteen years (and counting) McGinley has eased into a peripatetic lifestyle, wandering the European countryside and forests (but never straying too far from the thrum and spark of civilization) in search of the same epiphany with his head rattled to the sound of a cavernous air duct. Around 1996, McGinley adopted the moniker Murmer for his compositional work; and though his work often steps into the quieter realm of sound construction, much of his field recordings and resultant compositions privilege interference and disturbances that occur within any given sound ecology. Those sounds could be the elusive tone from that ventilator, the polyrhythmic chorus of chirping frogs, the abstracted roar from an Arctic wind tearing across the Black Sea, or the metallic skree from a bowed antenna perched atop a Soviet-era observatory. /What Are The Roots That Clutch/ marks McGinley's first full album in nearly 5 years, but it marks an elegant continuation of his previous album /We Share A Shadow/. The five chapters of this album can't easily be associated with any specific location; instead McGinley overlaps and crosshatches his field recordings and abstractions into acousmatic passages with ghostly, half-melodic qualities. Even the two unprocessed recordings of the album are impossibly complex in their accretions of sound. McGinley's composed pieces embrace lithe, mysterious drones whose mossy, damp atmosphere perfectly situate with tactile crunches, tactile events, and signal noise generation. Eels and leaches would not be out of place in such an environment; but the subaquatic murk snaps into a hallowed manifestation of ritualized minimalism at the album's finale/ -- one that LaMonte Young and Angus Maclise might have conjured in 1968 with clattering percussive elements and a hypnotic blur of harmonic drone. /What Are The Roots That Clutch/ is limited to 400 copies and comes housed with letterpress artwork. ???????????????????????????????? (13 June, Barcelona) Message-ID: <4FCF2B92.6010503@lullcec.org> Take part in a hands-on building session and rehearsal of pieces for the Dirty Electronics Racket! The Racket! is a DIY kit that introduces a number of key building blocks of analogue synthesiser design and Dirty Electronics aesthetics. It features an oscillator, wave shaping, noise generation, filtering, feedback and touch control. It is designed to be made on stripboard using wire connections as well as having a small copper etched artwork printed circuit board as a touch control. The Dirty Electronics Racket! epitomises a DIY spirit. Small thrifty synth, massive sound! Requires 9v battery and external amplification. No prior knowledge of electronics is needed. The workshop concludes with a performance by Dirty Electronics and pieces for the Racket! For example, Hug is a piece for the Racket! and portable amps (Dirty ?Cardboard Box? Amp) that are worn by performers. A cacophony of noise is created. Other performers stop/mute the ?racket? by hugging their noisy friends. Since 2003, John Richards has been exploring the idea of Dirty Electronics that focuses on face-to-face shared experiences, ritual, gesture, touch and social interaction. In Dirty Electronics, process and performance are inseparably bound. The ?performance? begins on the workbench devising instruments and is extended onto the stage through playing and exploring these instruments. Level: Introductory. Anyone can join! Date: Wednesday 13.06.2012, 16:00-22.00h. Location: Fabra i Coats ? F?brica de Creaci?. Sant Adri?, 20. Barcelona. Metro Sant Andreu. Price: 50? Link: http://bit.ly/JWAeH1 Related info: http://bit.ly/LhgQTP Sounds in Cause works as an archive containing the sound heritage of a series of cultural contexts in Latin America where, for good or ill, the environment is expected to experience irreversible changes in the short and medium term as a result of economic growth. The Orquestra del Caos began collecting samples in October 2009. At present, the archive includes 300 Gigabytes of samples of soundscapes from seven Latin American contexts. The collection and dissemination of sound data for subsequent use in artistic and research projects fits perfectly within the raison d?etre of Caos->Sonoscop. Through international sound-based artistic interventions, this project aims to raise awareness of these changes, firstly in the vicinity of the sites where the sound samples are recorded, and secondly in all the different cultural centres in which the artists involved in the international call for participation organised by Orquestra del Caos work. Furthermore, its essence is to try to introduce scientific methodologies into arts practice on one hand, and to encourage science to look outside of itself and use approaches borrowed from other contexts on the other. As of late last night I finally released a revised and updated version of the software synthesizer I used so many years ago for my contribution to the Fallt invalidObjects mini CD series (mine was the "do" disc by artist name "Later Days").? Named "Cambrian Suite", the software is two Win32 applications which enable you to visually design an audio synthesis patch (the "protenigor") and then evolve many new synthesis patches from it.? The suite includes a VST plugin renderer which enables you to use the evolved patches in a VST host of your choice. To get your own free copy, visit ? http://www.darwinarts.com register as a site user, and visit the Downloads page. This is a beta version of the software.? I expect to support OSX in future releases, so please subscribe to the announcements mailing list if you're Macintosh user.? You won't be left out! Critical to enhanced capabilities for such machine musicians will be listening facilities modeling human audition, and machine learning able to match the minimum 10000 hours or ten years of intensive practice of expert human musicians. Future musical agents will cope across multiple rehearsals and concert tours, or gather multiple commissions, potentially working over long musical lifetimes; they may be virtuoso performers and composers attributed in their own right, or powerful musical companions and assistants to human musicians. In this presentation we?ll meet a number of projects related to these themes. The concert system LL will be introduced, an experiment in listening and learning applied in works for drummer and computer, and electric violin and computer. Autocousmatic will be presented, an algorithmic composer for electroacoustic music which incorporates machine listening in its critic module. Large corpus content analysis work in music information retrieval shows great promise when adapted to concert systems and automated composers, and the SuperCollider library SCMIR will be demonstrated, alongside a new realtime polyphonic pitch tracker. Subtle listening isn't listening attentively to barely audible sounds. Subtle Listening is the ability to hear sounds as shapes, contours and textures and, via meditation techniques, map them to internal states, developing a deeper awareness and sensitivity to the environment. During the workshop we will practice techniques culled from Jungian psychology, Hermetic philosophy, Rhythmanalysis, synesthesia, paradox & Buddhist mediation and brain entrainment. Subtle Listening is not just another meditation class, the workshop participants will work towards creating a sound art piece derived from their experiences in the workshop ? and there is a possibility of pieces being broadcast on radio. While the workshop is designed with developing one's auditory sense in mind any type of artist can participate. Whether you are a poet, writer, photographer, painter, filmmaker, dancer, musician or sound artist your work will benefit from a heightened, subtle sense of being connected to the world around you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Registration site: https://subtlelistening.eventbrite.com/ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ register before June 30thth and pay only $100 for all four sessions! price goes to $150 if you register after June 30th Kim Cascone studied electronic music at the Berklee College of Music and privately at the New School in Manhattan. Trained as an architect, he is famous for his "building cuts" dating from the seventies. Matta-Clark used his work to try to open a breach in the capitalist system by questioning concepts such as private property, speculation, privacy, poverty, neglect and isolation. In 2011, art collector Harold Berg acquired the photographic archive on the work of Matta-Clark from Florent Bex, director of the Internacional Cultureel Centrum in Antwerp, and deposited it indefinitely with the MACBA Foundation. With the incorporation of the 46 works from Berg's LATA Collection, the MACBA Collection now has a total of 74 works by Matta-Clark. SON[I]A talks to Florent Bex about Matta-Clark's working process, the context in which they met and how the footage, photographs and drawings that he originally made as documentation have ended up becoming his body of work. Link: http://bit.ly/N7AKUI MP3: http://bit.ly/Ly53jH Co-founded by artist and composer Arthur Sauer and researcher Erwin Roebroeks, The Game of Life is the world's only mobile Wave Field Synthesis system. Wave Field Synthesis is a spatial audio rendering technique for the creation of virtual acoustic environments. It produces 'artificial' wave fronts synthesized by numerous individually-driven speakers. These wave fronts seem to originate from a virtual starting point: the virtual or notional source. Contrary to traditional specialization techniques such as stereo, the localization of virtual sources in WFS does not depend on - or change with - the listener's position. The Game of Life Foundation facilitates the creation, production, programming and promotion of cutting-edge spatial sound projects. Coinciding with S?nar festival, the system, with its 192 specially designed loudspeakers, is one of the projects featured in "Oferta P?blica / Public Tender": Rita McBride's solo show at MACBA. Deadline is 30.06.2012 Info and application form at http://www.giga-hertz-preis.de best, till The Giga-Hertz-Award comprises a total of four special awards. Their goal is to initiate and support new projects, and thus these prizes are aimed especially at young composers working in the area of electronic and acousmatic music. Candidates are judged on the basis of a composition not more than five years old and a proposal for a projected work. The focus of the Special Prizes is to honor a work, and not to a person. The competition is advertised publicly each year and is open to composers of all ages. The call 2012 for applications is specifically addressed to artists whose focus is an audio-visual work. In the event that such a work is already available, it may be submitted as a reference piece. For the work that is to be realized, it is desirable to submit a project design with an audio-visual orientation. Eligible for participation are also purely electro-acoustic and live electronic compositions. The works submitted can be of diverse combinations and types of style. There are no aesthetic constraints, only functional criteria that relate to content. Thus, all compositions submitted should meet at least one of the following criteria: 1. Composition for fixed media. 2. Compositions using live electronics with or without instruments. 3. One of the former categories accompaignied by a video (only the music will be considered by the jury). he Special Prizes consists of a project realization grant with which the prizewinners realize their submitted proposal either at the ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics in Karlsruhe or at the EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO des SWR in Freiburg. This includes technical support and guidance by the studio. The four Special Prizes are endowed as follows: 2 x ? 8,000 in form of a realization grant at the ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics in Karlsruhe; 2 x ? 8,000 in form of a realization grant at the EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO des SWR in Freiburg. The realization grant covers the costs for travel to and from the location of realisation, plus board and accommodation while working there. The scholarship is used to realize a work with electronics in a studio selected by the jury. The decision about where the work will be realized is taken by the jury on the basis of the aesthetic orientation of the composer and the specific details of the submitted project. The working stay should not be less than two months. It is envisaged that the new work will be premiered at the award ceremony of the Giga-Hertz-Award the following year and also broadcast on the radio. However, recipients of the special prizes have no legal entitlement to specific services from the ZKM or the EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO or to the performance or radio broadcast of their prize-winning works or the new works resulting from the realization grants. -- NEU: FreePhone 3-fach-Flat mit kostenlosem Smartphone! Much of this practice is performative in nature; ether originating from a performance background and using the internet as a new site and/or augmenting aspect of that practice or is a form of practice developed as direct response to the internet and becomes performative to some degree in its spectatorship. It has been well established that the internet is not the first or only example of the use of a networked technology repurposed for creative practice. There is a clear time line that can be traced back through the practice of Roy Ascott and his coining of the term Telematic Art in the 1980's to artist's use of satellite networks, telephone and other telecommunication devices as each were invented. Seen in this respect the internet can be considered as one of many networked technologies that has enabled networked performance. The internet is unique however in that it is not a singular network type that favours a particular form of media, broadcast or spectatorship. Most famously known as the network of networks it enables multiple protocols of which the world wide web's http is just one, is multimedia in nature and encourages intertextual folding and layering of media, is multi-directional not simply a broadcast communication form, de-centralised in ownership and the majority of its technologies are openly accessible. Remote Encounters, a two-day international conference with performance evening, aims to explore the use of networks as a means to enhance or create a wide variety of performance arts. How do networks as a site for performance provide opportunities for us as artists and performers? In particular how can we remotely collaborate, merge geographically separate places and times, reconfigure the space of performance and the relationship between artist and audience? :: Call for papers and performances :: Contributions are invited from practitioners and academics for papers and performances that contextualise current networked performance themes and issues both historically and across the spectrum of different types of networks, explore the wealth of performance opportunities offered by the internet and give a sample of future directions for networked performance. Topics may include, but will not be limited to, the following: Bodies and identity: - Virtual identities and real bodies; - Self projection as other; - Hardware, software and wetware - networked bodies; - The female body and the remote gaze; - Gender and role play; - Robots and cyborgs. New sites, new narratives, new genre: - Networks as new sites of opportunism; - Networked spaces as new territories; - Transmedia storytelling, new narratives; - Mixed reality narratives; - Personal and private spaces as public venue; - First, second and third person narratives; - Intertextuality; The relationship between artist and audience: - Primary and secondary audiences, local and global; - Audience as performer; - Interactive performances and breaking down the fourth wall; - The transformation of audience to user; - Strategies and levels of engagement; - The network as a means for converging and collaborative practice. Tools and technologies: - Democratisation of form and presentation; - Subverting networked communication media; - Alternative and community based networks; - Tubes and streams, from public access television to webcasting; - Virtual worlds and video gaming; - Social networking as performance; - Pervasive and locative performance; - Physical interfaces and feedback; - Telephony and SMS messaging. We are particularly interested in live performance proposals, existing or new, that employ OpenSim and as such could take advantage of a large space provided by the organisers. We are inviting artists, composers, hackers, designers, engineers and creative technologists to explore emerging artforms and curatorial practise in Refab Space, Access Space's DIY FabLab. The application deadline is Monday 18 June. The FabLab concept was first set out by Professor Neil Gershenfeld at *MIT*, Boston, USA in 2005. Our DIY approach means that Refab Space is being built inexpensively, while retaining essential facilities. Put simply, it is the idea that with just a few pieces of technology (e.g. a 3D printer, precision laser cutter) artists can create a huge diversity of 2 and 3 dimensional physical objects designed on their computers and made from a wide variety of materials. The Refab Space is an interface between the physical and the digital worlds and a resource centre where artists can access shared equipment and facilities. FabLab technology is in its infancy, as are the techniques and ideas associated with it. Artists can begin to explore and define a vast new area of art practise where very few have yet set foot. Technical help and training will be offered, although some familiarity with FabLab techniques would be an advantage. Artists should be familiar with using open source software on Linux. Examples of the kinds of methods and materials possible are: finely tooled two and three dimensional wood, plastics and metal; 3 dimensional objects created from materials such as plastics; the creation of two and three dimensional artworks in mixed media; the integration of electronic components such as sensors and circuits of various kinds into artworks. Artist can combine any of these methods and types of materials in their work. The design information for creating the work can be saved as data on the computer and sent to other artists, curators and technicians by electronic means such as email. *Applying:* Each 15 working day residency offers an artist fee of 1500 GBP, self-catering accommodation, a modest budget for materials and a contribution towards travel. In return artists will create a new work for a physical exhibition. Wave Field Synthesis is a technique for sound spatialisation than produces "artificial" wave fronts using a large number of speakers. Contrary to traditional spatialization techniques such as stereophonic sound, the localization of virtual sources in WFS does not change with the listener's position. WFS systems also allow the positioning of sounds outside the square conformed by the array of speakers and, as opposed to most multichannel sound systems, are characterized by the absence of a sweet spot and for enjoying a wider optimal listening area. ----------------------------------------------- soon: 22.06.2012 Tetsuya Umeda. The composer, by Jon Leidecker* Link: http://bit.ly/MGcw1s MP3: http://bit.ly/LPTaEi Playlist+related info: http://bit.ly/Lhp6SQ Led by Jon Leidecker, VARIATIONS reconstructs the history of sound appropriationism by looking at examples from 20th century composition, popular art and commercial media, and the convergence of all these trends today. *Summary* If sampling had seemed an inherently revolutionary practice in the eighties that called into question the definition and the authority of the composer, the proliferation of artists in the decade that followed reasserted that authority. Mainstream audiences finally recognized appropriation as a legitimate form of creativity once artists became comfortable practicing it as a form of self-expression. In the nineties, sampling technology reached a level of sophistication and control that allowed musicians to truly assert themselves over their materials. While some collagists innovated by conifdently stepping into the traditional role of the romantic composer, presenting the resulting music as an expression of self, others continued to explore the intrinsic meanings suggested by the craft itself. In this episode we trace through examples of the popular music that brought the term 'remix' into the popular lexicon, hear the CD player joining the turntable as a live performance instrument, and connect digital sampling to the history of musical borrowing: written notation?s classical equivalent to the editing techniques that modern composers use to transform existing music into new compositions. This duo was born to play with Rangda (Chris Corsano, Ben Chasny and Sir Richard Bishop) at Grnd Zero in Lyon on june 8th 2010. I (Sheik Anorak) was supposed to improvised with other musicians from Grnd Zero as an opening for Rangda, but instead I asked Clement to start a new improv/free jazz duo. And then LOUP was born". The absolute silence of the vegetation along the banks and the deep prismatic glow almost convinced him that the entire earth had been transformed and that any progress through this crystal world had become pointless. - J.G. Ballard, The Crystal World The Serpent that announces, "The World is a closed thing, cyclical, resonant, eternally-returning," is to be delivered into a system whose only aim is to violate the Cycle. - Thomas Pynchon, Gravity's Rainbow The Crystal World Open Laboratory is a 5 days lab of experimentation, crystallization, and de-crystallization starting from the premise that computers are highly ordered set of minerals. Crystalline structures are extracted from the earth, and re-crystallized through industrial process as equally ordered computers. In their technological redundancy, precious metals are in turn extracted or de-crystallized within cycles which further destroy life and leach a dangerous chemistry into the planet. Mimicking the often dangerous processes undertaken in these extractions by the world's dispossessed, The Crystal World Open Laboratory proposes to expand these industrialised interventions through experimentation in the formation of novel crystal geologies aimed to etch unexpected psycho(geo)physical distortions and contingencies into our contemporary crystalline cycles. Activities across the five days will include mineral extraction and precipitation, biological doping (addition of impurities to engender computational properties) of substrates, construction of high heat and high voltage synthetic geologies, crystalline signal processing, speculative geophysics, anthropocenic (re-)fossilizations, and diffracted odic imaging. A final evening of presentation and live experimentation will attempt to fuse these diverse actions, culminating in the ingestion of colloidal suspensions of precious metals to stem the contemporary plague. Experiments will include high heat, high voltage, and toxic processes. Safety gear and induction will be provided but please bring any masks/goggles/labcoats or similar if available. While we provide full safety guidelines participants take part at their own risk. No previous experience is necessary although as places are limited preference will be given to those showing a firm commitment to the full five days. A fee of ?5 is payable for basic provisions (tea, coffee etc). Please send expressions of interest to x at xxn.org.uk before midnight Friday 6th July. http://crystalworld.org.uk http://thewhitebuilding.org http://www.spacestudios.org.uk/whats-on/the-white-building Martin Howse:http://1010.co.uk/org Ryan Jordan:http://ryanjordan.org Jonathan Kemp:http://xxn.org.uk Mailing List:http://www.freshsent.info/crystal The Crystal World is part of a Permacultures residency supported by SPACE, Bloomberg and Arts Council England, London. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Therefore, you could say they are both on the same geographical wavelength. However, they also share the same musical wavelength, as they are both quite fond of delicate ambiances, loops, and spontaneity. Cellist Julia Kent weaves dense sonic fabrics using real-time looping techniques she truly masters. Poet/singer/electronic artist Barbara De Dominicis likes to integrate live-treated field recordings to her inspired vocal improvisations. To these two ingredients - Kent and De Dominicis - we must add a third one: the locations. The tracks on this debut album were improvised and recorded in 2009-2010, mainly in Italy, in unusual locations with promising acoustics: a fortress, an abandoned tunnel, a wool factory, a farmhouse. The artists inhabited these places for a while, and in turn these places inhabit the music, through microphone and hydrophone recordings of their surrounding area. Each piece has its own unique character. To the main CD (8 tracks + 1 bonus track, total duration: 44 minutes), the Baskaru label is adding a DVD featuring Davide Lonardi's documentary film Faraway Close (35 minutes). The filmmaker followed the duo on their journey. His film includes bits from interviews and performances, panoramic views, and archive documents. Initially self-taught, Marchetti studied with Xavier Garcia in Grenoble. A scholar, he later worked at the CFMI (Lyon) and INA-GRM studios (Paris), and published a book on composer Michel Chion. In the mid-1990s Marchetti was one of a handful of artists who took electroacoustic music out of the academic studio and into the realm of free improvisation, using a live set-up with microphones, small speakers, tape recorders and radio. As an improviser he performs in his long-standing duo with J?r?me Noetinger, in the audio-visual project Le Cube, with influential collective Archipel, and with dancer Y?ko Higashi. In his studio work he incorporates sound collage and electroacoustic composition, although the level of poetry and refusal of genre boundaries in his music puts him closer to Kristoff K. Roll and Luc Ferrari than Pierre Henry or Bernard Parmegiani.echopolite.com *Gert-Jan Prins* has been known for twenty years as one of the most challenging sound artists in the Netherlands and established himself as one of the central electronic performers in improvised music. His unique self-developed live-electronics make use of radio and transmitter technology, and create sounds with great physical energy. Prins focuses on percussive and environmental noise creating a music that?s characterized by pure rawness in volume and sound, but also utilizing subtlety in color through specific use of scraping, rasping and other noise sounds. Prins is a member of MIMEO and collaborates with, Thomas Lehn, Thomas Ankersmit, Cor Fuhler (The Flirts), Peter Rehberg and Fennesz. He has performed throughout Europe and the Americas. gjp.info *JD Zazie* is an italian sound artist and recordist based in Berlin. Coming from a DJ and a radiophonic background, JD Zazie has explored over the years different approaches of real-time manipulation on fixed recorded sound. Captured live in 2008, this improvisation utilises reel-to-reel machines, tape loops, homebuilt electronics and analogue devices to craft a psychedelic noisescape that shifts from static and silence to harmony and dissonance. Somewhere between musique concrete and microsound, Terry Riley and Wolf Eyes, Glyphs has strangely charted for months in the top 10 on CKUT FM in Montreal as a "hit micronoise album." IO/003 - S* + A.J. Discovering an old cassette tape in an antique dresser, a.j. cornell unravels the erotic tension between two lovers attempting to keep their politically-explosive affair under control, constructing a strangely seductive soundscape during a live radio-art performance at Montreal?s CKUT 90.3FM. Recovering long lost tapes of the N30 protests (the Battle of Seattle), s* composes a tense montage from the police scanner, combatting surveillance and arrest activities with frequency and noise manipulation. Each side presents a full immersion in overhearing behind-the-scenes banter, providing the craven ear with its own surveillance apparatus, and seducing the listener with the unheard discourses of secrecy and power, personal and public. He is interested in how a mediated musical memory, from archival collections of vinyl records to digitally captured sound events during a performance, can be used to create a new sonic reality that emerges through the fleeting notion of the ?now.? This pursuit has led him to create customized instruments that allow him to intuitively access and re-play these different temporalities ingrained in our listening consciousness. His live performances range from carefully constructed solo sets to improvisational groups with virtuosic instrumentalists. http://www.djsniff.com/ OKKYUNG LEE [KOREA] | Cello Native of Korea, has been developing her own voice in a contemporary cello performance, improvisation and composition. with her solid classical training as a foundation, she incorporates jazz, sounds, korean traditional music, and noise with extended techniques to create her unique blend of music. http://okkyung.wordpress.com/ P?R TH?RN [SE] | Solo P?r Th?rn is originally a poet but has during the last years started working with improvised music and sound art.
