Citynumberscapes are field/quotidian recordings of urban space, peppered with recited numbers found within the landscape. We did them as factual and 'artlessly' as possible, without montage or post-production: just pressed record, walked, looked for numbers & spoke ... Louis walked around London, speaking out loud the UK capital's numbers in English. I did the same in Amsterdam, in Dutch, and in Paris, in French. To make things even more exciting for all of you number fetishists, I will subtitle the Amsterdam (Dutch) and Parisian (French) citynumberscape broadcasts live on Twitter, at http://twitter.com/soundblog (or look up the hashtag: #cityns). The absolute silence of the vegetation along the banks and the deep prismatic glow almost convinced him that the entire earth had been transformed and that any progress through this crystal world had become pointless. - J.G. Ballard, The Crystal World The Serpent that announces, "The World is a closed thing, cyclical, resonant, eternally-returning," is to be delivered into a system whose only aim is to violate the Cycle. - Thomas Pynchon, Gravity's Rainbow The Crystal World Open Laboratory is a 5 days lab of experimentation, crystallization, and de-crystallization starting from the premise that computers are highly ordered set of minerals. Crystalline structures are extracted from the earth, and re-crystallized through industrial process as equally ordered computers. In their technological redundancy, precious metals are in turn extracted or de-crystallized within cycles which further destroy life and leach a dangerous chemistry into the planet. Mimicking the often dangerous processes undertaken in these extractions by the world's dispossessed, The Crystal World Open Laboratory proposes to expand these industrialised interventions through experimentation in the formation of novel crystal geologies aimed to etch unexpected psycho(geo)physical distortions and contingencies into our contemporary crystalline cycles. Activities across the five days will include mineral extraction and precipitation, biological doping (addition of impurities to engender computational properties) of substrates, construction of high heat and high voltage synthetic geologies, crystalline signal processing, speculative geophysics, anthropocenic (re-)fossilizations, and diffracted odic imaging. A final evening of presentation and live experimentation will attempt to fuse these diverse actions, culminating in the ingestion of colloidal suspensions of precious metals to stem the contemporary plague. Experiments will include high heat, high voltage, and toxic processes. Safety gear and induction will be provided but please bring any masks/goggles/labcoats or similar if available. While we provide full safety guidelines participants take part at their own risk. No previous experience is necessary although as places are limited preference will be given to those showing a firm commitment to the full five days. A fee of ?5 is payable for basic provisions (tea, coffee etc). Please send expressions of interest to x at xxn.org.uk before midnight Friday 6th July. http://crystalworld.org.uk http://thewhitebuilding.org http://www.spacestudios.org.uk/whats-on/the-white-building Martin Howse:http://1010.co.uk/org Ryan Jordan:http://ryanjordan.org Jonathan Kemp:http://xxn.org.uk Mailing List:http://www.freshsent.info/crystal The Crystal World is part of a Permacultures residency supported by SPACE, Bloomberg and Arts Council England, London. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As the premiere technology of the twentieth century, radio, with its electromagnetic transmission waves carrying aural information through the ether of atmosphere and space, transcending time and distance, created, through its immediacy and immersion, the reality of hearing from and being heard by others in alternate realities or worlds. Such a sound journey has always been the provenance of radio. Using acousmatic compositions, phonography, field recordings, and sampling, "Contact" imagines such a radio broadcast and what might be heard. For the best personal listening experience, headphones are suggested. John F. Barber teaches in The Creative Media & Digital Culture Program at Washington State University Vancouver. With regard to sound arts, he is interested in opportunities afforded by Internet radio, online iReportage, transmission arts, and geo-locative audio-based immersive/interactive experiences, especially as they might promote aural compositions/performances/installations as the basis for engaged narrative. again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field-recordings, field-recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated framework:afield series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address at the bottom of this mail. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! ------------------------- Timeline and content description 01:20 Sample, HBO video production opening 01:20 Sample, "Dream Drone" freesound.org 01:24 SFX electrical switch 01:24 SFX electrical surge 01:24 SFX white noise 02:52 Sample, "Kepler: Star KIC12268220C Light Curve Waves to Sound," NASA recording, Connect and Collaborate with NASA > NASA Sounds < http://www.nasa.gov/connect/sounds/> 02:52 Sample, "Shortwave radio" 03:10 Sample, "Bruckerby," track #41, The Ghost Orchid? An Introduction of EVP 03:20 Sample, Contact (1997), opening scene audio, reversed 04:30 Sample, "Radio Luxembourg," track #17, The Ghost Orchid? An Introduction of EVP 05:17 Production including SFX; field recording of the opening lines of Beowulf spoken in middle English; samples from the Max Headroom television show, 1960s Radio Luxembourg station identification, Orsen Welles and The Mercury Theatre of the Air production of "The War of the Worlds," opening countdown of X-Minus 1 radio show, and "Is Everybody In?" from The Stoned Immaculate, voice by William S. In the seventh episode of the series, we trace through examples of the popular music that brought the term 'remix' into the popular lexicon, hear the CD player joining the turntable as a live performance instrument, and connect digital sampling to the history of musical borrowing: written notation?s classical equivalent to the editing techniques that modern composers use to transform existing music into new compositions. Their joint project blends acoustic and computer generated sounds and explores the boundaries of repetitive structures and sound spatialisation. Rub?n Pati?o, also known as Pato, works in the field of computer music, an activity he combines with occasional incursions in the installation field. Pati?o?s works are characterized by an algorithmic compositional style that is both irreverent and hyperenergetic. Morten J. Olsen is a musician, composer and improvisor best known for his work as a drummer with MoHa! and Ultralyd. Recently he has been exploring the inner sonics of a rotating 32-inch bass drum in duo with Robin Hayward, in trio with Chris Heenan and Michael Vorfeld, with the Splitter Orchester, with electronics and simply solo. EX-CON (.bcn) Ex-Con is Arnau Sala (analog/digital procesors, modular synthesizer, midi keyboards/modules, tapes), a sound and visual artist based in Barcelona. As a drummer and percussionist he has been part of projects such as Les Aus, B?stia Ferida, Homenatges and Veiled. Sala has collaborated live and in the studio with artists like Lydia Lunch, Mark Cunningham, Takehisa Kosugi, Mattin, Agust? Fern?ndez, Ferran Fages, Pablo Rega, Eli Keszler, Rub?n Pati?o and Macromassa. He has released abundant material on international labels such as Scumbag Relations, Lotus Birth, Senseless Empire Deep Fried Tapes and others. Saturday 07.07.2012, 19:00h Fabra i Coats ? An encounter with Rick Prelinger. Monday, July 16th at 7.30 pm. MACBA Auditorium Message-ID: Lecture:* Lost Landscapes and Found Collections. An encounter with Rick Prelinger* Monday, July 16th at 7.30 pm. MACBA Auditorium This event will be in English. Limited seating. http://www.macba.cat/en/rick-prelinger-lost-landscapes Archives and libraries are currently overcome with anxiety about protocols, rules and regulations, but it might be better to focus on linking to what people (not institutions) need to celebrate and remember, and understand archival and library work as performative. Drawing on the experience gathered over eight years of work at the Prelinger Library and in participatory media archives Rick Prelinger will raise some questions that are central to anyone working with or around archives and libraries today. How can past media transitions help us make more informed decisions in the future? Are we moving toward greater archival centralization, or are we entering a landscape where an unlimited number of collections flourish? How will personal and corporate or institutional collections influence and change one another? Are archives gearing their services and offerings toward classes of users that don?t really exist, while users seek archives that haven?t yet been created? What?s really new, and what just looks new? Rick Prelinger is an archivist, writer and filmmaker. He has been an active player in the stock footage field since 1985, and his collection is now represented worldwide by Getty Images. Beginning in 2000, he partnered with Internet Archive to make 2,100 (soon to be 5,000) films available online for free viewing, downloading and reuse. His archival feature *Panorama Ephemera* (2004) played in venues around the world, and his new feature project *No More Road Trips?* received a Creative Capital grant in 2012. His *Lost Landscapes* projects have played to many thousands of viewers in San Francisco, Detroit and elsewhere. Prelinger is a board member of Internet Archive and frequently writes and speaks on the future of archives and issues relating to archival access and regeneration. With Megan Prelinger, he co-founded the Prelinger Library, an appropriation-friendly private research library open to the public in downtown San Francisco. COLLECTING SOUNDS WITH... Kenneth Goldsmith. Part I Message-ID: *New podcast: MEMORABILIA. COLLECTING SOUNDS WITH... Kenneth Goldsmith. Part I* Kenneth Goldsmith, founder of Ubuweb, takes us on a journey through his personal history as a sound collector. Link: http://rwm.macba.cat/en/research/memorabilia_kenneth_goldsmith/capsula Related info: http://rwm.macba.cat/uploads/20120712/Memorabilia_Kenneth_Goldsmith_eng.pdf MP3: http://rwm.macba.cat/uploads/memorabilia/04_memorabilia_kenneth_goldsmith.mp3 *Produced by Roc Jim?nez de Cisneros* Ubuweb may not be an ordinary sound archive, precisely because Kenneth Goldsmith is no ordinary archivist. He himself is quick to refer to his lack of training in the field as both a disadvantage and a strength, and the sum of the two produced the amateur immediacy that made it possible to create and develop such an ambitious repository, conceived and managed outside of the usual channels. Ubuweb has always been a true reflection of Goldsmith?s personality and way of looking at the world, and this becomes apparent in this personal reconstruction of a lifetime of sound collecting. Starting with childhood memories of his grandfather?s book collection, Goldsmith looks back over the path that began with him as an avid music consumer and led him to (or to better understand) his obsessive dedication to the ?accumulation of cultural artefacts? and ultimately to founding Ubuweb. Goldsmith remains aloof from some of the practices traditionally associated with music and sound collecting, and chooses abundance over rivalry and exclusivity, the content of records over their appearance or condition, so that listening is stripped of many of its tangential elements (what William Bennett calls ?transparent concessions?). Goldsmith?s personal history as a collector is essentially the history of the disintegration of the object, which plays out in parallel to the evolution of sound media and the emergence of the digital networks, in which the values and interests of this accidental archivist and poet find their natural habitat. From Howlin? Wolf to Joseph Beuys, from the Beatles to People Like Us, the deconstruction of Goldsmith?s collections sheds light on his tendency to continue to stockpile beyond the limits of the humanly graspable, his interest in eccentricity and the unexpected that pays no heed to artistic genres, and his incurable obsession with sharing with his peers. Initially an improvising saxophonist, his activities expanded to include live electronic music and installation pieces based on architectural acoustics and infrasound. He has been performing solo and in collaboration with other artists such as New York minimalist Phill Niblock, Kevin Drumm, Jim O'Rourke, Gert-Jan Prins, Borbetomagus and Alvin Lucier since 1998. Since 2003, Ankersmit most frequently collaborates with Niblock and electroacoustic improviser Valerio Tricoli. His saxophone work focusses on the abstract, timbral extremes of the instrument, combining sustained streams of intense multiphonic sound with acoustically amplified micro-events occurring inside the instrument. His electronic music combines realtime performance on analogue modular synthesizers with digital editing and multitrack recording. http://www.thomasankersmit.net/ *Alberto de Campo* studied classical composition and jazz guitar in Austria. As guest researcher and later research director at CREATE, UC Santa Barbara, he worked with Curtis Roads on experimental synthesis instruments, and wrote the tutorial for SuperCollider2. He taught at the IEM Graz, and at the Academy for Media and Arts (KHM) Cologne. There, long term collaborations began with Florian Hecker, earweego, the band powerbooks_unplugged, and realtime research. In 2004/2005, Alberto de Campo held the Edgard Var?se guest professorship for Electronic Music at TU Berlin. From 2005-2007, he was lead researcher in the SonEnvir project at IEM Graz, where an interdisciplinary team of scientists studied the applicability of soni?cation in diverse ?elds. With the team, de Campo wrote numerous publications, and organised a concert of soni?cations of social data for the ICAD 2006 conference in London. In 2007 he became professor for Music Informatics at the Institute For Music And Media (IMM), Robert Schumann Music University D?sseldorf, and since 2009, he is Professor for Generative Art/Computational Art at the Institute for Time- based Media, Arts University Berlin (UdK). *Pierce Warnecke *has been creating digital material since his studies at Boston?s Berklee College of Music. Attracted at the same time by image and sound, he develops modules to forge his own audiovisual elements. His work stems from his interest in the effects of time on matter: modification, deterioration and disappearance. Via an almost scientific process of collecting, filtering and combining phenomena (objects, data, sounds, images), he distills the subject via repetitive processes until it approaches true abstraction. Whether focus is on the purity of digital forms or the chaotic grit of natural objects, large scales of time and space or microscopic detail, the goal of Pierce?s work is to readapt existing materials into a parallel context where their signified meanings, symbols and cultural connections have become residual ghosts. Sound works explore combinations of pure synthetic sounds, electronic interferences, field recordings and manipulations of found objects. Textural, drone, noise, electronic and improvised music are areas of interest, explored through solo works and collaborations. Video is created in real-time, recorded, or generated and uses found items and moments: data sets, organic matter and microscopic textures to create dense patterns and contrasting forms. http://piercewarnecke.blogspot.com Born in 1984, *Louis Laurain* the trumpet as a self-taught musician. Since 2007 he has studyed improvisation at the Paris Superior Conservatory. He is specialy interested by free forms of improvisation in music (energic free-jazz, noise and minimalism). He ?s currently working with the free-jazz quartet ACTUUM (concert at the Vilette Jazz Festival in Sept 2009 and Best Band at the 2010 European Jazz Awards in Amsterdam). He also works with the trio DOLSE (Warnecke/Laurain/Svensson). They recorded an album in november in Berlin and they will be on tour in France at the beginning a february. (Paris, Bordeaux, Marseilles, Lyon). He regularly performs improvised duet or trio performances in Paris with the bass player Joel grip (Umlaut records) and the saxophone player Yoann Durant. *Nils Ostendorf *has developed a very individual approach on his instrument, exploring the wide range between notes and noise by generating frequencies using an extended embouchure technique, different mutes or vibrating surfaces. He is influenced by natural sounds, contemporary music and electronic music. Nils is active in various settings of improvised music, with? The Silencers? with Benoit Delbcq, Toma Gouband and Kim Myhr,in a Duo with saxophone player Michel Doneda, in the duo ?Trigger? with Matthias M?ller, a trio with pianist Philip Zoubek and reed player Philippe Lauzier and in duo with Kim Myhr . Nils works also as a performer, composer, musical director and producer for theatre and dance pieces, mainly with the german director Thomas Ostermeier at the Schaub?hne Berlin and the M?nchner Kammerspiele. http://soundcloud.com/nilsostendorf more info: www.ausland-berlin.de -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Many of these recordings were made in the days when recording on location entailed lugging a heavy and cumbersome full-size reel to reel recorder out and about with you. Outdoor recordings were often impractical but sometimes being part of a club ? pooling resources and sharing knowledge, made things a little bit easier. The appearance of affordable portable battery recorders in the early 60?s granted tape enthusiasts unprecedented freedom as to what and where they could record ? a freedom which most tape club members exploited to the full. Some of these recordings were made on organised outings as part of the tape club?s programme of activities; others were made independently by individual members. This selection represents just a fraction of the recordings contained within the archives. The variety and imagination displayed here is a testament to the pioneering spirit of a dedicated group of amateurs; our forebears in the pursuit of recorded sound. Thanks to all former tape club members, in particular; Bill and Marjory Howard, Ernie Flecknoe, Brian Hayhoe, John & Lorna Buckler, John Moule, Bruce Goodwin, Dennis Blackmore and Patrick Everest. Recordings include: Cadeby light railway / budgerigars / flamingos / fairground & fairground organ / owl / a visit to the zoo, Bill & Marjory Howard (the monkey house & sea lions) / applause from a musical concert / Leicester market / shopping hubbub / traffic / a police officer describing a car journey in real-time / tour around a power station / train recordings / six sounds / birdsong (Harold?s land) / Leicester tape club news tape ? Guitar-Controlled Live Sound Processing ? http://tammen.org *Hans Tammen* will perform ?I hate Zero Crossings?, a work that exhibits nonlinear feedback strategies to occasional create chaotic sonic behaviors. This feedback loop can go on for a while, and the performer occasionally interferes with the balance of power to give it a new direction, until at the end, as usual, that balance gets out of control. Current projects sometimes use sound input from other players to be processed, but the live sound processing is still controlled by guitar sounds. NZNZ [AR] ? The smoking cassette breaks.) http://leplacard.org/2012/Placard15_PARIS/ Initiated in 1999 by French musician Erik Minkkinen (known as a member of Sister Iodine and other experimental music projects), Le Placard is a nomadic streaming festival that presents concerts listened to solely with headphones, a novelty that has attracted an international following and given rise to an extensive network of enthusiasts, musicians and promoters. Le Placard started in Paris at time when police raids on unlicensed events were frequent and finding venues for alternative music was difficult. So instead Erik Minkkinen organised a headphone party in his small apartment, called "placard" after the French word for "cupboard". Since then this concept has grown to an international streaming festival, with many cities providing listening rooms for local and remote performances. To the present , more than a hundred of Le Placard festivals have taken place, connecting various cities. Local artists musicians and performers are invited via the site of the Placard leplacard.org to register their performance to the extent of the available slots. Each slot offers a 30 min. open space to express. All performances will be played from 10 am to 10 pm and streamed on the web. There is no fixed line-up and no tacit order or hierarchy and the attendance is free: anyone who wishes to perform can subscribe for a live or DJ set, plug the personal gear and perform. All performances will be streamed in real time and could be listened all around the world, especially by the growing Placard listeners community. Mostly physically present in the same space, performers and listeners linked by a system of headphones share during this long event the same special half-silence and quiet creative excitement. Also the concept of Le Placard was thought to guest virtual performers registered on the site. Basically everyone connected on internet should stream his live from his own room and be diffused both on the web and the emmetting space. Performers and listeners just have to register first on the site and follow some easy process explained via an e-mail received on their own adress. I am writing to you now to invite proposals for compositions, instruments, experiments and other activities that might be included in the session. I see this taking shape in an "unconference" kind of way where I will endeavour to include as many of the submitted ideas as possible, taking into account the available time, human and technical resources. The laptop orchestra I direct at McMaster University (the Cybernetic Orchestra) will be at the session ready to perform with selected materials (i.e. we'll be devoting our remaining rehearsals in July and August to preparing for the session). The orchestra is willing to try anything. Live coding with ChucK is the orchestra's core strength -- with pockets within the orchestra developing strong skills with Max/MSP and SuperCollider. But I repeat: we are willing to try anything! Feel free to make proposals involving other performers at the symposium, symposium attendees and the general public also. So... if you are involved with participatory electronic ensemble performance in any form (or know people who are) -- please consider sending me (or encouraging someone else to send me) a proposal. Proposals should be sent to me at in plain-text email. Thanks in advance for forwarding this -- I look forward to hearing from many of you! The sounds were all prepared by the members of the orchestra, using a variety of tools, including CLOrk's proprietary "Juicer" instrument (the juiced up noise 3/4 of the way). Group beat-making was done normally with one sound per person, synced up with CLOrk's OSC/MIDI sync over wifi. Dancers were invited to improvise and use the orchestra space freely. To eliminate the separation between audience and performers, audience members were also invited to walk around freely within the performance area. http://youtu.be/9iQlVk07u-Q Cheers Eldad -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The series looks at the many probes and experiments that were launched in the last century in search of new musical resources, and a new aesthetic; for ways to make music adequate to a world transformed by disorientating technologies. The studio transcript for Probes #1, the new podcast series by Chris Cutler, is now available. For this series we will be publishing the transcripts before the podcasts. Stay tuned. Link: http://bit.ly/NHKy50 Transcript (PDF): http://bit.ly/M6RM5J Summary: In the late nineteenth century two facts conspired to change the face of music: the collapse of common practice tonality (which overturned the certainties underpinning the world of Art music), and the invention of a revolutionary new form of memory, sound recording (which redefined and greatly empowered the world of popular music). A tidal wave of probes and experiments into new musical resources and new organisational practices ploughed through both disciplines, bringing parts of each onto shared terrain before rolling on to underpin a new aesthetics able to follow sound and its manipulations beyond the narrow confines of ?music?. This series tries analytically to trace and explain these developments, and to show how, and why, both musical and post-musical genres take the forms they do. This first programme sets the scene and investigates early reconsiderations of pitch: probes that postulate new scales to be constructed through the ever-greater subdivision of the inherited intervals of equal temperament. This edition of "my favorite things", is devoted to a particular live event that happened in Montreal in May 2011, and i was lucky enough to attend. Musique d'impression Three composers, here and abroad, two live performances and a presentation of audio book. The young and dynamic organization of electroacoustic music Ekumen Montreal, is investing again, in an intimate and unusual presentation, this time, music, printing and its surroundings. The event invaded, the book binding studio of Cecile Cote, a small universe of stories printed, ready to be told, to take life and mix with the presence and the imagination of each. Ekumen offered a unique opportunity for Montrealers to visit or revisit Geographic Words, the sound performance of the internationally acclaimed multidisciplinary artist Herman Kolgen, to get carried away by the merger Sieste05 haunting book, created by the composer Olivier Girouard and graphics by Urban9 or discover through "The underneath of things", the world premiere of the universe purring and delicate sound of British artist Orla Wren. Travel, sound and magnetic proximity between artist, audience and venue Inspired by the intimacy of the place and a magnetic proximity exacerbated with the public, each artist offers a work that manipulates and reinvents the laws of the size, but takes its support on a very human scale. Through a multidirectional interplay, each confronts a series of unexpected encounters solitary or in common. The public is propelled, elastic jump, a leaping camera revealing voluptuous relative breaths , fragile voice or laughing, without reference to an environment where successive points and leaks resonate. Three works Geographic words, the very gripping and poetic performance offset by Herman Kolgen suddenly eradicates our dreams inside our thoughts to bring to light and melt back into the mass of sound that envelops us. Facing the book Sieste05 Olivier Girouard & Urban9, connected by Cecile herself, our daydreams find the comfort of their intimate loneliness and gives way to a sound space that forms the imagination. The underneath of things, the performance of Orla Wren Music is specially created for printing. The artist is inspired by the real machine tools and workshop revealing macroscopic details , often hidden around us, and its profound effect on the sensory experience of life, to listen and to hear. Tracks - Artists - Websites Geographic words - Herman Kolgen - http://www.kolgen.net sieste_05 - Olivier & Urban9 - http://www.ekumen.com The underneath of things - Orla Wren - http://www.orlawren.com Ekumen is an organisation that facilitates the gathering of artists and the exploration of sound art and electroacoustic music. Artistic director since December 2010, Olivier Girouard is pursuing Ekumen?s mandate to offer a space for local and international creation and dissemination, as well as supporting the production of works and publications. Ekumen stands out not only by proposing original listening situations ? making music with unusual objects in atypical places, but also through a constant thirst for exchange and the integration of other art forms and techniques. Research, curiosity and the unearthing of a variety of platforms to present work to an audience: these are integral elements of Ekumen?s creativity. Aether is the first album I produced entirely on a modular synthesizer in combination with additional processing and fieldrecordings. Although it is one hell of a dark record, it also is my most introspective and personal album. Most of the tracks are based on improvisations and aleatoric processes inside the synthesizer. The results are dark, slowing pulsating rooms, oozing a neon void, a dark glow like a promise of empty wet streets at dawn. http://soundcloud.com/nomadickidsrepublic/nkr015-nils-quak-aether The album is available at your favourite record stores and online shops. You can also purchase it directly from me for $15 including postage or together with my "Long Forgotten Days " album for $ 22.5 including postage. Just drop me a line. You?d be welcome at either, but why not come to both? We start at Access Space (3 Sidney Street, S1 4RG, UK) for a dorkbot prelude at 6pm, to visit their current artist-in-residence: * Refab Space artist in residence, the Juneau Brothers (Juneau Projects and Joseph Welden), will discuss their latest project and the materials, technology and techniques behind it. They?ll give an overview of what the group does and where the residency idea comes from. Then we stroll a few metres down the road to Site gallery (1 Brown Street, S1 2BS, UK) by 7pm for more: * Susanne Palzer will talk about switching electricity off and going on in context of her interest in ?performing technology without technology?. Following a period of R&D and the project RAM/RAR/RAA+RAP(s) - A Random Process Experiment at Access Space she will present recent findings: how she uses electricity for research and to learn about technology, her attempts to translate what she has learnt into physical performance ? e.g. an ?analogue hack of presentation software? ? and the temptation to switch electricity back on and use altered software in the future. * Alex McLean will talk about Live Coding, using programming languages to make live music. Alex has been writing software to make music to drink beer to for over ten years in Slub, succeeding in making rooms full of people dance to algorithms on several occasions. He makes increasingly broken techno, writing code live in self-built languages. Lately he has been collaborating with Jake Harries to make statistically improbable pop music as Silicone Bake. Alex will talk a bit about how live coding has developed over the past ten years, show some of the live coding environments he has made, and look to a future of interactive programming languages based on visual and tangible interaction. * Plus! We hope to have a representative from the Audacious Art Experiment to talk about their work with respect to their day-to-night festival taking place at Site gallery the following day (Saturday 4th August). Dorkbot is a meeting of people interested in electric/electronic art in the broadest sense; robotics, kinetic art, microcontrollers, interactive art, algorithmic music, net.art? The only real conditions are that it is a bit strange and involves electricity in some way.
