SuperCollider has established itself as probably the most powerful programming environment for real time sound synthesis, algorithmic/generative music and all sorts of other audio-related ap...plications. It is widely used by artists and scientists alike for both research and actual artistic creation. It features a powerful state-of-the-art sound engine and an easy to learn fully featured object oriented language. More, it is open-source and totally free of charge. This three day intensive workshop welcomes participants of any discipline with or without prior programming or musical experience and guides them to their first sounds, instruments and musical structures with supercollider. Apart from a thorough introduction to the Supercollider language and the synthesis server, the workshop aims to be an informal introduction to algorithmic/generative music, GUI design, live coding and digital sound synthesis with SuperCollider. Dates, times, and location: Wednesday 11th January 2012 - Friday 13th January 2012 11am - 6pm daily nnnnn, Unit 73a, Regent Studios, 8 Andrew's Road, London, E8 4QN Booking and fee: ?80 / ?70 student http://nnnnn.org.uk/doku.php?id=supercollider_workshop register by sending an email to ryan at nnnnn.org.uk Download SuperCollider: http://supercollider.sourceforge.net/ Workshop Leader: Marinos Koutsomichalis http://www.marinoskoutsomichalis.com/ Active internationally in both academic and non academic milieus, MK has been composing and performing exploratory sound and media art since the mid '00s using a variety of mediums - computers, programming languages, acoustic instruments / ensembles, analogue electronics, loudspeakers, domestic appliances, environmental sounds or photography amongst others. The Beauty in Breathing. Curated by Kenneth Goldsmith Message-ID: *INTERRUPTIONS #7. The Beauty in Breathing. Curated by Kenneth Goldsmith * Link: http://rwm.macba.cat/en/curatorial/interruptions_7_kenneth_goldsmith/capsula The Zen Buddhists insist that during meditation the practitioner must focus exclusively on their breath. When stray thoughts enter your mind, you must always go back to your breath. What they mean by this is that if you are breathing, you are alive. What we do every second is something we take for granted. Coming at it from a very different angle, the artists featured in this mix want to make us aware of the same thing: by highlighting our most commonly shared ? yet almost invisible ? bodily function and using it as the basis for sonic exploration, they reveal something at once cosmic and mundane, that which is right under our nose, but which we somehow ignore. John Cage once said that music is all around us if only we had the ears to hear it. The same can be said by the artists compiled here: breathing is all around us, if only we had the tools to pay attention to it. This compilation is, hopefully, one small step toward that end. It will take place at the Department of Music, University of Edinburgh, during the first half of 2012. We invite inventors of new musical instruments to submit examples of their work. These will be displayed online, creating a public archive of new electronic instruments. The submissions will be reviewed by a group of upcoming and established postgraduate composers, at the University of Edinburgh. The composers will each select an instrument by way of a voting process. Over a three month period they will compose a new work for the instrument and professional ensemble, assisted through close communication with the inventor. The compositions will be performed in a concert of new music, Edinburgh, in 2012. We invite submissions of new digital or electronic instruments for Inventors Composers Coaction 2012, an interdisciplinary collaborative project and concert. These will be reviewed by participating composers, at the University of Edinburgh, who will be able to vote for three instruments in order of preference. Inventors of the selected instruments will be provided with one night's accommodation in Edinburgh in order to attend the event (April 2012 - to be confirmed), as well as a small contribution towards travel costs. Selected participants may be invited to present a short talk on one aspect of their creative practice. Instruments may be: - purely software (e.g. built in Max/MSP, Supercollider, Pd) - augmented instruments, including software, sensors etc. - mobile devices that make use of smartphone technology - novel hardware devices, repurposed controllers, NIMEs etc. - may involve spatialisation techniques. Please see http://www.inventorcomposer.net for submission details. Deadline 6th January 2012. -- www.laurensarahhayes.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... For more information, look up http://puredata.info/community/organization/pd-berlin/pd-berlin-users-group. We also encourage you to take an active part, and put up suggestions for topics you want to talk about / topics you want to be talked about. Pd-Berlin Google group: You can join the open group http://groups.google.com/group/pd_berlin, and make questions to the users there. Doors are open from 20h-20h15. After that they'll be closed, and you will have to call someone from the Pd-meeting to get in. To get a telephone number to call or confirm assistance you can write to info_at_minitronics.net. Please, don?t call to the staff of NK to open the doors. They let us use the space but we have to take care about having the meeting without producing any disturbance to them, and to clean the space after the meeting. We would apreciate if you would send us a small mail to info_at_minitronics.net with your name, Pd experience and interests, so that we know how many people might be coming. Or put your name in the pd-berlin wiki page. We would like to thank the support and willingness of NK in the organization of these events. Track 2: Possible dialogues (27:09 min.) Credits: Session recorded between September and October 2011 and edited in October 2011 by Atomo (AKA Omalto). Omalto Website: http://omalto.bandcamp.com/ Statement: This session is composed by sound captures done on several sites of the 3D virtual Second Life. The initial concept of these recordings was to understand possible similarities and/or differences between recordings done on physical world and on on-line virtual spaces. Second Life offers ways of simulating physical reality through environment building tools and in its interface. Unfortunately, most of these constructions try to imitate real spaces within a commodified culture, even if there is room for experiment and subversion. More a social space than a special simulation, these virtual re-creations is a stage for communication between its users (through avatars). The alterity of these virtual spaces comes from the failure in recreating physical reality in a consisting form which creates sensory deformations and the virtual nature of the communication done by its users. Soon after a normal time of adaptation to the interface, the users start to feel physical simulation the sense of being there. However, this reality is marked by visual incongruence, download time, software noise and hardware interferences, which mold the presence and communication of the users, creating a distorted sense of physicality. Serving as an example of such sensory deformations, this recording is divided in two segments, having space and communication as targets. The first part is similar to a field recording in a physical environment, during which the sounds are perceived through an avatar, including its interactions and ramblings. It also includes sounds captured from SL simulations such as a 1st world war battlefield or interactive artist installations. The second part of this recording expands that perception by including some sound captures of users interactions, mainly through voice. This segment relies more on compositions done through sound editing, a fragmental recording that re-creates the mixed identities expressed on these virtual spaces. again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated /*framework:afield*/ series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! framework tartu mnt 41 63710 ahja p?lvamaa estonia info at frameworkradio.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------ framework intro submissions: 1) take yourself and an audio recorder to a location of your choice 2) record for /AT LEAST/ one minute before you - 3) read aloud the following text: *welcome to framework. framework is a show consecrated to field recording, and its use in composition. field recording, phonography, the art of sound hunting; open your ears and listen!* */[3b) please also feel free to translate this text into your native tongue!] /* 4) continue your recording for /AT LEAST/ two minutes after you have finished speaking 5) post the recording to us on any format, or send us an mp3 thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ drop a note to info at frameworkradio.net to be added to or removed from this mailing list -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... COLLECTING SOUNDS WITH... William Bennett. Part II Message-ID: *Podcast: MEMORABILIA. COLLECTING SOUNDS WITH... William Bennett. Part II A musical selection of some of the secret jewels found in William Bennett's sound collection, discovering rare percussion music from West-Africa. * * Music selected by William Bennett. Link: http://bit.ly/y9fAvM There's something particularly intoxicating about sheer physiological functionality in music. About being acted upon to the extent where granted permission and forceful imperative become giddily indistinguishable. Not that you're worrying over the distinction anyway when a sound takes you whipsawing around into juddering surrender bordering on then slipping into ecstasy. There just isn't any need to worry about responsible agency, who or what is answerable for the sudden tyranny of basest autonomy. You're a character, very nonfiction. The height of aural power is when a piece you've never heard and can't place finds you more wantonly suggestible than you'd readily volunteer. And manifests its hold physically. Experienced outside and beyond their original context these specially mixed African and Haitian percussion pieces evince an extra-intentional intent, a rhythmic seizure of rational faculties. Timidity of the permeable body, rigid abhorrence of the ass, are not long for this world. Too much won't be enough. Merciless non-judgmental ambiguity: your balled-up two-fisted convictions defer to a point of gravity somewhere lower, tag team target of relentless djembe and doun-doun polyrhythms. Best let it exercise full reign, best allow yourself a suspension of the bounds of good sense, an equivocal lapse into that unsafe territory where content is subservient to effect. Sublime indulgence in existential power-play. "I started as a visual artist and molecular biologist, I am still working as a molecular biologist, but I have moved more in the direction of working only with Sound... I co-founded NK 3 1/2 years ago with Julian Percy, previous to that we worked together with a larger artist collective in which decision making processes were incredibly difficult and lengthy, so we decided to start a smaller collective with a more concentrated interest, i.e. experimental music. Recently Manuela Benetton joined us as an independent curator." ?This algorithmic composition was written for a performance at Able Gallery. It was a room recording in which there were some sounds from the audience, such as coughing and so on, therefore I performed the score in the studio to get a recording without audience noise.? This duo was born to play with Rangda (Chris Corsano, Ben Chasny and Sir Richard Bishop) at Grnd Zero in Lyon on june 8th 2010. I (Sheik Anorak) was supposed to improvised with other musicians from Grnd Zero as an openeing for Rangda, but instead I asked Clement to start a new improv/free jazz duo. And then LOUP was born". LOUP can be considered as an avant-garde free jazz duo. The meeting of jazz background (Clement Edouard) and noise (Sheik Anorak). This workshop will be led by a specialist in these prestigious tools, actually one of those who participated most actively in the development of this version 3. This training will be held on Saturday 4 and Sunday, February 5th in France, near Paris, in the auditorium of the Electroacoustic Studio of Pantin (93). Note that a first course in late January will welcome famous people in the world of electroacoustic composition (Beatriz Ferreyra, R?gis Renouard Larivi?re, Roger Cochini ...) and some renowned French sound engineers and sound designers (Christophe H?ral, for instance ...). If you are interested in this training, we recommend you register now, as the number of participants is limited to 20 maximum. Thank you in this case to return, *before January 28* and by post, the registration form, downloadable from our website. At the end of the course - thanks to the generous support of the Ina-GRM - the Complete version of the GRM Tools will be offered to each participant with a 50% reduction. We think one of the interests of this training will concern all the training that will be done around the three new plug-ins: Evolution, Fusion and Grinder, who are very different from the spirit of the old bundles of the GRM Tools. You can check in detail all the information on our website: www.kmpantin.org. And for any additional information on this course, thank you to write us at km.pantin [at] gmail.com. We hope you will be present at our training! Otherwise, if you know of people in your relations that would be interested, we would very much appreciate if you advise them of this workshop :) Thank you for your attention. We hope to see you soon, Jean Loup Killian KM Pantin j.loup.killian [at] gmail.com facebook soundcloud __________________________ "The idea is to produce things that are as strange and mysterious to you as the first music you ever heard." - Brian Eno -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena CA. 2011 *CD Note:* 3 Surfaces is a site specific sound and light installation for the main stairwell of the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena. The piece incorporates the unique sounds, natural light, and architectural details of the space as primary materials. The sound piece is formed using field recordings of the space itself, captured during peak activity hours. Using digital filtering and processing, the recordings are transformed into a subtle environmental ?tint? to alter how the audience perceives the space. The space is physically altered using scrims to create 3 new surfaces above the stairwell, which allow for the natural light to be filtered through while suggesting a more private, intimate experience. 3 Surfaces is presented here in stereo with some compositional elements added to make it more suitable for home listening.
