BEAM is a high-tech music weekender exploring the potential physicality of
electronic music, where you can listen to, watch and create your own
physically living electronic music. The focus on electronic music being
created LIVE is explored through a programme of performances,
demonstrations, installations and workshops. BEAM brings together a global
audience of artists, researchers, DIY electronics builders and
enthusiasts, from beginners to veterans.
This year’s festival opens with the BEAM Symposium on Friday 22nd June,
with a keynote by inventor of the Reactable, Sergi Jorda. Performance
programmes on Friday and Saturday nights feature Thomas Lehn,
Frances-Marie Uitti, Reactable (Carles López), Benoit & the Mandelbrots,
Miha Ciglar, Ed Handley (Plaid) & Bruno Zamborlin, Tomomi Adachi and many
more. Throughout the weekend the Artaud Performance Centre is transformed
with instruments, interfaces and demonstrations from our BEAM Open Call
and three new sonic installations for the festival, jointly commissioned
with Oxford Contemporary Music.
On Saturday evening the main auditorium will be transformed for the BEAM
sleepover as Jana Winderen explores the audio topography of the oceans and
the depth of ice crevasses, revealing the complexity and strangeness of
the unseen world beneath in a one-off night-long performance.
There are workshops throughout the weekend with Marco Donnarumma, building
your own biosensing device for muscle sounds, live coding with Benoit &
the Mandelbrots, and building skin-contact circuits to interface with TV's
with Ryan Jordan.
