Langheinrich, whose background originates in painting and photography, uses a powerful combination of sound and images to address the abstract idea he describes as a 'aesthetic matter' in installations and live performances that engage with a careful analysis of detail, overwhelming beauty and stillness. For HUMANITIES, Soundwave seeks artists, composers and musicians to investigate our human experience, and examine the future of our human constructs, cultures and rituals through sound. >From Season 4?s outward examination of the environment to Season 5?s inward reflection of our own being and existence, the 2012 festival attempts to voice what makes us human in the backdrop of the MesoAmerican Long Count Calendar ?Rebirth? and the ensuing mythologies and theories. Soundwave seeks experience-driven performances that reinterpret the connections between sound and our human experience through its instrumentation, concept, visual collaboration, installation, audience interaction, or production by local and international sound and media artists, technologists, designers, musicians, and composers. the questions How can the human body, mind and spirit affect sound? What are the future sonic traditions of our cultures (ethnic, social, community)? How will technology affect our humanity and our sonic experience and traditions? What does it means to be human? (How we live, where we come from, how we think, and how we construct existence (physical, emotional, spiritual)). How will we construct our humanness (ideas about higher power/purpose, myths, legends, cultures and traditions, human consciousness, metaphysical constructs, human identity, human exchange, and our relation to the world)? How do we measure existence now and in the future? What does evolution look like/sound like for the self, body, mind/intellect, and the world? concepts to consider electric body impulses; mind-manipulated sound technologies and recordings; body sonics; body instrumentation; brain waves to soundwaves; re-imaginations of ritual acoustics, spiritual, cultural, social acoustics, sonic legends, myths, folklore and fables; new concepts of the Griots, Bards, & Minstrals; hybridized traditions/cultures; imagined utopias; evolutions, regeneration, rebirth, and revolutions; how the world came to be in present form/ future form; supernatural heroes, gods, shamans; magic, illusions and faith; re-imagination and re-interpretations of existence; regenerations and cycles of life; re-interpretation of the home/soul/heart; new ways of experiencing human instinct and desire; human-enabled sonic technologies; dance collaborations, film collaborations, theatrics, and other artist imaginations. season 5 mission HUMANITIES hopes to engage artists and audiences with new voices exploring / celebrating / challenging human existence, and re-inventing a world of human possibility. It hopes to inspire thought and action while showcasing sound?s inherent connection to our physical and spiritual bodies and innovative artistic voices for the ?rebirth? of our humanity. important dates Open Call Deadline: October 10 2011 Artist Notification: November 2011 Artist Performance Development: Jan-June 2012 Performance Dates: July through Sept 2012 festival details Dates and Venues: Soundwave will take place on various dates between July and September 2012 at various venues in San Francisco. We work with the invited artist to schedule available dates, as well as venues appropriate for their work. Typically, specific dates and venues are confirmed three months in advance. Artist Fees: Fees to performing artists are modest. Amount is dependent on grant awards and fundraising currently in process. Typically, fees are confirmed three months in advance of performance date. Accommodations: We are unable to offer accommodation fees for international artists and American artists outside of the Bay Area. We can offer housing, with limited availability, in private homes of friendly and enthusiastic friends of Soundwave to sleep and store belongings. Travel: We invite all artists to submit proposals, but we are unable to offer financial assistance to cover travel costs for those outside the Bay Area. We ask our international artists and American artists outside of the Bay Area to apply for travel funding through their national arts councils and private foundations in their home country (ie. Canadian Artists ? Canada Council for the Arts). We will need to be notified of your travel award or notification of self-travel by March 01, 2012 or the invitation will be rescinded. We do occasionally apply for grants specifically for our International artists and American artists outside the Bay Area. Artists that apply early will have better access to these grants. These grants, however, would not be enough to offset travel and accommodation costs, so we encourage those to continue to apply for travel grants. Jury: A curatorial committee made up of MEDIATE directors and creative professionals from diverse sonic and artistic backgrounds will rigorously jury proposals based on congruity of theme, ingenuity of project, diversity of artists? perspective, and feasibility of production. proposal guidelines All proposals MUST include: Your artistic resume and website (including past performances, exhibitions, commissions, discography, videography) A concise project description limited to 500 words. Soundwave is a multi-venue and multi-date sound performance series happening over the span of two months every two years in San Francisco USA. Each season investigates a new idea in sound and invites diverse multidisciplinary artists and musicians to explore the season?s theme in new and innovative directions. Soundwave has completed four successful seasons: Season 4?s GREEN SOUND in 2010, Season 3?s MOVE>SOUND in 2008, Season 2?s SURROUND>SOUND in 2006 and Season 1?s FREE>SOUND in 2004. Created by MEDIATE founder and artistic director Alan So, Soundwave explores the boundaries of how we see sound, language and music. It is a project dedicated to challenge and inspire artists and audiences to look deeper into the sound medium and discover new connections to sound making and the sound experience. Soundwave was awarded Best Sound Sculptures ? Future Classic by San Francisco Magazine?s BEST of 2007 issue. It has been featured on SPARK*, KQED?s (PBS) television arts show and Educator Guide on Experimental Music, SF Weekly, SF Chronicle, BBC Radio 3 (UK), San Francisco Bay Guardian, 7?7 Magazine, SFist, WNYC Public Radio, ResonanceFM (UK), KUSF, KALX, KPFA, amongst others. ?Soundwave has sought to make irrelevant the typical distinctions between artist, musician, audience, stage, and venue idiosyncratic performances that are challenging, charming, magical, assaultive, and (as is always the case with really sweet sound art) deeply personal for everyone present.? ? Project) "Listening to the environment, contextualizing it objectively and creatively has always been a priority of the work of U.S.O. Project. Free from any pseudo-environmental or socio-political implication, the continuous work on sampling, processing and transfiguration of found sound and carefully preserved in memory of a digital recorder, has always played a central role in our compositional practices. U.S.O. defines Soundscape as the expressive and narrative richness that comes from the reciprocal and continuous interaction of multiple sound sources from the real world, and other phenomena which are perceptible and measurable only through proper and adequate transduction (electromagnetic signals, for example). A Soundscape is also an opportunity for reflection and imagination that has little to share with the real world. A Soundscape can be a place of the mind, a reminiscence of a future experienced in dreams, lands far away in space and time. We try to deal with the possible infinites of the listening experience, both in their objective and manufactured dimensions. We believe this represents our primary objective, to render the endless possibilities of life and its surroundings, sensible and experienceable in our conscious activity." Objectives of the Workshop: Students will be encouraged to actively listen to the rich sound world around them. Their imagination and creativity will be stimulated, and at the end of the course they will create a sound composition using the world around them as a musical instrument. The workshop offers an introduction to theory and practice as follows: An historical perspective on the Soundscape Composition. Tools and methodologies for field recordings. The listening practice to analyze the characteristics of ambient sound. A practical approach to the transformation of sound. Composition with three-dimensional space. The Ambisonics format. Tools and Advanced spatialization Techniques. Target Anyone interested in the Soundscape Composition and sound field experimentation. Structure of the course 1) Introduction Brief history of soundscape composition, with examples drawn from the work of contemporary artists who incorporate the practice of Field Recording in their compositions. Introduction to the concept of "soundscape". 2) Tools Field Recordist's Tools: microphones and recorders. Conventional microphones techniques and creative miking. 3) Sound Transformation Manipulation and digital signal processing techniques (VST+AU). Filtering. Convolution. Granular Timeshifting. PhaseVocoder. 4) Composing in Space Multichannel Surround Sound. HOA (Higher-Order Ambisonics). Tools for encoding and decoding. At the end of the four-day workshop, participants will develop a short sound composition (about 6 min.) using the concepts and techniques acquired during the various modules. Duration: 4 days / 17-18, 24-25 September 2011 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Costs and subscription To participate in the workshop you must register no later than 10th September 2011. The fee is ? 100. For more information about the registration, please write to workshop at sincronie.org. SoundWalking Listening paths and outdoor recordings. The participants will take part in a "sound walk" to "collect" their point of view of a soundscape with their digital portable recorders, as defined by a preplanned route. Editing sessions of the collected material. Requirements: It is recommended that participants bring their own laptop, a portable recorder and headphones. The number is limited to 14 participants. The show opens with thoughts about time drawn from philosophy, science and musicology and shows how these are expressed in musical form, and looks at the origins of sonic action, musical behaviors and notational systems as a way of engaging with the temporal realm. With a specific reference to the emergence of sound recording technologies ? both vinyl and tape ? the show examines how new technologies have impacted musical vocabularies and changed the relationship between sound, time and music. It closes with a brief look at how computer based editing has extended this paradigm and opened the way for stochastic methods of sound generation. =EN=============================================================== Space, Light and Movement I. Kinetic Projects and Interactive Art with the Arduino ================================================================== When visitors can influence the video installation they are watching, when kinetic objects are able to move or when light and atmosphere of an artistic space changes, than there is always an Arduino involved. This system was designed for the use of artists and designer. Therefore it is the ideal interface for connecting men and art. It also controls light, machines and sound in a stand alone mode. The workshop addresses artists who want to realise multimedia installations, interactive projects or kinetic objects. The 3 days course covers the basic knowledge. We use sound, light and movement, we control machines and generate sound. The course will provide an insight into simple circuits, the Arduino software (Processing) and the general use of an Arduino. ================================================================== Der Workshop wird in Deutsch gehalten, R?ckfragen auf Englisch sind willkommen ================================================================== >>>>Workshop: Zeit: Donnertag 22. bis Samstag 24.September 2011 jeweils von 10:00-17:30 (1/2 St Pause) Anspruch auf eine Stunde Fach-Coaching Ort: Medienwerkstatt Berlin in der Druckwerkstatt, Mariannenplatz 2, 10997 Berlin Kosten: 140 ? + 40 ? Inspired by the aesthetics of maths and physics, Perich works with simple forms and complex systems. For this exhibition, Perich will be exhibiting a body of work that include the sound sculptures Interval Studies and Machine Drawings ? the result of a long-standing interest in code and systems. Perich?s sound sculptures ? Interval Studies ? is a formal look at musical intervals as a dense continuum of microtonal pitch, expressed en masse as discrete 1-bit frequencies distributed across hundreds of individual speakers. Each speaker, emitting a single, primitive 1-bit tone, becomes a microscopic voice in the total cluster, substituting individual pitch for larger sonic masses. The Machine Drawings ? pen on paper or wall drawings executed by a custom-built machine over the course of the exhibition at LEAP, use randomness and order as raw materials within a composition. The machine drawings are a combination of the delicacy of real drawings and the rigid, structured system of mechanics and code. Artist Bio: Tristan Perich (b. 1982) holds a B.A. from Columbia University and M.P.S. from N.Y.U. Tisch As a visual artist, Perich has had solo exhibitions at bitforms gallery (NYC) and Mikrogalleriet (Copenhagen) in 2009, Museo Carandente (Spoleto), Motelsalieri (Rome), Addison Gallery (MA) in 2010, and the Katonah Museum in 2011. His artwork has been included in group shows at Lydgalleriet (Bergen), LABoral (Barcelona), iMAL (Brussels), ABC No Rio (NY), and Greylock Arts (MA) and a traveling science museum exhibit in Arkansas. He was awarded the Prix Ars Electronica in 2009 and was a featured artist at Sonar 2010 in Barcelona. The WIRE Magazine describes his compositions as ?an austere meeting of electronic and organic.? His works for soloist, ensemble and orchestra have been performed internationally by ensembles including Bang on a Can, Calder Quartet and Meehan/Perkins at venues from the Whitney Museum, P.S.1, Merkin Hall, and the Stone to Los Angeles? Zipper Hall and Lentos in Austria. In 2004 he began work on 1-Bit Music to experiment with the foundations of electronic sound, culminating in a physical ?album,? a music-generating circuit packaged inside a standard CD jewel case. His new circuit album, 1-Bit Symphony, is a long-form electronic composition in five movements, released in 2010 on Cantaloupe Music. www.leapknecht.de www.tristanperich.com _______________________________________________ LEAP Lab for Electronic Arts and Performance (Berlin Carr? 1. Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th of September 2011 13:00-18:00 SuperCollider is an environment and programming language for real time audio synthesis and algorithmic composition. But what does that mean? "Programming" is the act of giving a computer instructions to follow. Using SuperCollider involves typing commands into a text window and getting some sounds in return. So why would anybody want to do that? - for musicians: to have greater control over synthesis and create sounds not possible through other means. - for sound engineers or scientists: to have a better understanding of the nature of sound and digital audio. - for composers: to explore the world of algorithmic composition, an area in which SuperCollider excels. -for the curious: to investigate something new and different, and make some cool sounds. Instructor: This course will be taught by Chris Jeffs an advanced SuperCollider user who has been working with this software since the last ten years. www.chrisjeffs.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... He has done several sound installation projects and performance that generates site- specific soundscape using minimal function of electric circuit/system and simple physical phenomena. He has collaborated, among others, with Otomo Yoshihide and Kanta Horio, as well as performed with Kasumi Trio, together with Takashi Ueno, Shinsuke Michishita (LSD March) and Ikuro Takahashi (Fushitsusha, Nagisa Ni Te). ?Altering fans, televisions, and other everyday appliances, converting their functions into something utterly different, Umeda creates objects freed from their original meanings. His works, created to suit the spaces in which they will be installed, use utterly familiar, commonplace phenomena, channeled through his clever handiness and unique spatial sensibility, to create mysterious, seemingly impossible sensations. They thereby free one from rigid perceptions constrained by preconceived ideas.? MICHAEL VORFELD Light Bulb Music, by Berlin-based artist and percussionist Michael Vorfeld, is an audiovisual performance, the music for which is created by the use of various lamps and electrical control elements. The implementation of switches, dimmers, relays, flasher relays etc. produces multi-faceted variations in lighting and electrical current. This is then made audible with the aid of microphones and pick-ups. Subtle mechanical sounds produced within the control elements emerge and are acoustically amplified and integrated into the music. Changes in light intensity, the glimmer of filaments and the rhythmical variety of flickering and pulsating lights are translated into a microcosmic and rich electroacoustic soundscape. An altogether analogue and complex light and sound performance arises out of a spatial installation. + site-specifit light space by Vincent Rebers. Friday, 16.09.2011, 20:30h Mica Moca. Here's the inevitable promo blurb: "Recorded in a makeshift lakeside studio last summer, Beth Kleist's Drei is the sometimes psychedelic, sometimes pastoral third album from Nils Quak and Philipp B?ckle. The album haunts and teases its way through sixteen pieces of mostly guitar, percussion, and electronics without settling long into an idiom before leaping headlong into a new idea. Lovers of kraut rock, post-spectral drone, twee electronica, and especially postrock in all of its shifting facets will find pockets of bliss in Drei. Drei is an eerie trip through the misty haze between folk, drone and lo-fi recordings. It is a journey back to the records of our youth, those innocent yet murderous pieces that kept us awake at night and alive at day. Imperfect, murky songs that meant the world to us. Drei is a celebration of those moments. It is a melancholic reflection that vividly recalls the days, when tape music was not the new hip thing." This special presentation by Scott Bernstein happens at 7:00 p.m. this Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Columbia College, 33 E. Congress Parkway, Basement, Chicago IL 60605 This event is co-hosted by The Department of Audio Arts & Acoustics at Columbia College Chicago. Columbia College Contact: Jesse Seay, 312-369-8804 MSAE contact: Eric Leonardson, info at mwsae.org, 773-342-5012 Admission Free Scott Bernstein's presentation will review experiences from the past two decades measuring and mapping the sources of both travel demand and of urban rainwater runoff in Chicago and elsewhere. It also reviews successes in retrofitting communities for travel demand reduction, and for "catching raindrops where they fall" as a viable flood prevention strategy. His talk suggests that both reduced noise exposure and increased intentional soundscape enhancement is achievable, affordable, and economical, suggesting agendas for research, demonstration, and local policies that can make healthy soundscapes attainable. Scott Bernstein is President of the Center for Neighborhood Technology. Founded in 1978, CNT is national innovations center based in Chicago that promotes healthy and productive communities. CNT's work applies geographic information to the redesign of urban and economic systems to help reveal, focus and better utilize local resources. CNT was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Award for Creative & Effective Institutions in 2009. More information about CNT is on their website http://www.cnt.org. Please check back on the MSAE website and Facebook Page for updates, as we add future public events to our Fall and Winter Calendar . Coming up on October 8th, Chicago Phonography concert and soundwalk at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. My apologies if you've received this message more than once. Paris 8, E.A. 1572 Esth?tique, musicologie, danse et cr?ation musicale in collaboration with Cdmc, Grm, Cix, Ircam, Motus 23-25 may 2012 Xenakis? electroacoustic works are relatively few in his whole production, but they are very important. Indeed, most of them ? from Diamorphoses through to S.709: Concret PH, Bohor, Persepolis, Polytope de Cluny, La L?gende d?Eer, Myc?nes alpha, Voyage absolu des Unari vers Androm?de, Gendy3? ? punctuate the history of electroacoustic music as masterpieces full of originality and innovation. Besides, Xenakis worked both on musique concr?te and with electronic music techniques, covering both fields of what is called electroacoustic music. Moreover, his polytopes, where technology plays a major role, are pioneer realizations in the history of multimedia art. As they are composed at important moments of Xenakis? evolution, these electroacoustic works can also be analyzed to understand the various aspects of his musical, theoretical, aesthetic and interdisciplinary thought: research on noise, granular theory, experimentations on spatialization, inter-artistic realizations? It is also important to notice the fact that these works have a strong relationship with his instrumental music (for instance, there are many affinities between La L?gende d?Eer and the orchestral work Jonchaies). This symposium wishes to gather researchers from all around the world ? well-known specialists of Xenakis? music or young researchers ?, to analyze his electroacoustic music, focusing on topics such as: -Xenakis and musique concr?te -Xenakis and electronic music -relationship to other medias: polytopes, film music, music for ballet -the granular paradigm-research on spatialization-relationship to instrumental music -UPIC -GENDYN -analytical approaches -historical approaches -aesthetic approaches -posterity of Xenakis? research: composers, technologies? These topics are merely suggestions. The scientific committee will examine all proposals. Berlin: Marcus Schmickler / Peter Ablinger / Alberto de Campo / Bill Kouligas / DJ Rumpsti Pumsti (Musik) / Concert Sat Sept 24 Message-ID: sorry for x-posting N.K. Saturday Sept 24th 2011, Doors 21:30 Concert 22:00 Marcus Schmickler / Peter Ablinger / Alberto de Campo / Bill Kouligas / DJ Rumpsti Pumsti (Musik) Marcus Schmickler is a composer and performer. He studied composition and electronic music and since then has worked in the most diverse fields of composed and improvised music. He has won numerous prizes and honours and is closely associated with the Cologne label a-Musik. As a composer along with his many works of electronic music, he works with the ensemble recherche, the Staatskapelle Weimar, the musikFabrik, the Paragon Ensemble, the Ensemble zeitkratzer and many more. As a musician he works with musicians such as John Tilbury, Thomas Lehn, Otomo Yoshihide, David Behrman, Claudio Bohorquez and Julee Cruise. His discography so far consists of over 50 titles, and he has been performing on the world?s stages and at international festivals for years. He gives lectures and seminars and also works as an author in the field of theatre, radio plays and film. http://www.piethopraxis.org/ Peter Ablinger was born in Schwanenstadt, Austria in 1959. He began studying graphic arts and was enthused by free jazz, but completed his studies in composition with G?sta Neuwirth and Roman Haubenstock-Ramati in Graz and Vienna. Since 1982 he has lived in Berlin, where he has initiated and conducted numerous festivals and concerts. In 1988 he founded the Ensemble Zwischent?ne. In 1993 he was a visiting professor at the University of Music, Graz. He has been guest conductor of ?Klangforum Wien?, ?United Berlin? and the ?Insel Musik Ensemble?. Since 1990 Peter Ablinger has worked as a freelance musician. Peter Ablinger is one of the few artists today who uses noise without any kind of symbolism ? not as a signifier for chaos, energy, entropy, disorder, or uproar; not for opposing something, or being disobedient or destructive; not for everything, for eternity, or for what-have-you. As in all these cases of music deliberately involving noise, noise is the case, but for Ablinger: this alone. Peter Ablinger has also come a long way in questioning the nature of sound, time, and space (the components usually thought central to music), and his findings have jeopardized and made dubious conventions usually thought irrefutable. These insights pertain to repetition and monotony, reduction and redundancy, density and entropy. (Christian Scheib, edited by Bill Dietz) http://ablinger.mur.at/ Alberto de Campo has studied classical composition, jazz guitar, and electronic music in Austria and the US. After working at UC Santa Barbara, designing experimental software instruments with Curtis Roads, he taught at Media Arts Academy Cologne, the Institute for Electronic Music in Graz, and at TU Berlin. He held a professorship for Music Informatics at Music University Duesseldorf, and currently is Professor for Generative Art at Arts Univ. Berlin. He plays with powerbooks_unplugged (just in time programming on mostly unamplified laptops); improvisation groups with acoustic instruments such as Quiet Noise Quartet, Syntopia Ensemble, and ad hoc constellations; electronic music with BlippooHazard (four musicians playing the Blippoo Box, a hardware synth by Rob Hordijk). Recent projects include creating software instruments and sound installations with Florian Hecker, e.g. ?No Night No Day? at Biennale Venice, and AuditoryObjects (Bordeaux), and collaborating with Marcus Schmickler and Carsten Goertz on ?Bonner Durchmusterung?, a project involving sonification und visualisation of atronomical data. Bill Kouligas is a sound artist and designer, better known for his solo project Family Battle Snake. He also runs the label PAN with vinyl editions of electronic and experimental artists. His music captures a variety of different sounds and time periods filtered through an imaginary urban soundscape. Emerging through a noise underground, ominous like a cloak of whispers, he now floats on a plane ebbing and flowing between electronic tape music and gluey entropicalia. With the use of analogue synth, tape manipulation and electronics he employs warm drones and a musique concrete approach through structured perspectives on a journey across time. Bill has collaborated with the likes of C Spencer Yeh, Destroy All Monsters, Sudden Infant, John Olson (Wolf Eyes), Joseph Hammer (LAFMS), Ralf Wehowsky/RLW, Chris Corsano, Damo Suzuki, Christian Weber, Anla Courtis, Astro, MV Carbon, Valerio Cosi, Birds of Delay and Kouhei Matsunaga to name a few. www.pan-act.com DJ Rumpsti Pumsti (Musik) http://www.rumpsti-pumsti.com/ NK Elsenstr. 52/ 2.Hinterhaus Etage 2 12059 Berlin Neuk?lln 0049(0)17620626386 www.nkprojekt.de -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The sounds have been processed, and electronic synthesized frequencies have been added to the original recordings. The result is a compositional soundwork in which, what emerges is an expressionist use of sounds. By combining natural and artificial sounds, the clip aims to communicate an emotional snapshot of the latest Egyptian revolution. http://fieldabuse.com/2011/08/02/revolution-tuned/ -- Claudio Curciotti (ITALY) 0039 329 85 77 330 (SPAIN) 0034 618 173 467 (EGYPT) 0020 195 631 898 www.claudiocurciotti.com www.fieldabuse.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... But the practice of sampling is more than a simple modernization or expansion of the number of options available to those who seek their inspiration in the refinement of previous composition. The history of this music traces nearly as far back as the advent of recording, and its emergence and development mirrors the increasingly selfconscious relationship of society to its experience of music. Starting with the precedents achieved by Charles Ives and John Cage, VARIATIONS presents an overview of the major landmarks in Sampling Music, following examples in twentieth century composition, folk art and commercial media through to the meeting of all those threads in the present day. Just send an email to this address and come to the location of the workshop at 18h. ----------------------------------------------- Introduction to Sound Synthesis and SuperCollider by Thor Magnusson (ixi audio). This seminar will cover the basics of realtime sound synthesis and introduce participants to SuperCollider. Attendees will be acquainted with basic sound generators and processors (oscillators, noise generators, filters, delays) as well as with synthesis techniques such as additive and substractive synthesis and amplitude or frequency modulation. This knowledge will then be used to build synths able to be controlled programatically, by means of graphical user interfaces or using OpenSoundControl. Thor Magnusson works in the fields of music and generative art. He teaches at the Faculty of Arts and Media in the University of Brighton, works at the Department of Informatics at the University of Sussex and is also part of the Creative Systems Lab. He is also a co-founder and member of ixi audio and as part of this collective he develops audio software and systems for generative composition. In distributing this call for papers, therefore, it is not an ontology we seek, but a necessary reflection on the politics of noise as these relate in turn to new media ecologies, cultural practices and fluctuating modes of governance. Here an array of definitions - from unwanted sound, chaotic frequency distribution to deconstructive remainder, systemic glitch or excess, blend, and gesture at once to cultural practices of dissent and their broader socio-political resonances. Such an enquiry acknowledges the vast legacy of noise across auditory cultures, tracing echoes in historical practices engaged with public assembly, protest, territorial dispute and the management of difference. This legacy also travels the twin trajectories of industrialisation and urban development in the early Twentieth Century, reflected in various cultural movements from Futurism, dissonant compositional and instrumentation techniques, through to Musique concr?te, early Electronic Music and Free Jazz. In the latter half of the Twentieth Century, the parallel development of systems theory (concerned with the management of equivocation) alongside the growing acknowledgement of textual ambiguity in the Arts, reflects an ideological contradistinction between scientific and cultural epistemes in terms of how noise was negotiated. Increasingly contingent on techniques for the quantisation, synthesis and transmission of signals, and formally influenced by the proliferation of stochastic and aleatory processes as compositional techniques, this dialectic has had a significant impact on the grain of audio culture, and the fluctuating signification of noise in particular. A canonical work such as Christian Marclay?s /Record Without a Cover/ or Yasunao Tone?s /Wounded CD/ cuts to the very heart of this relationship, such that the exploit of the technological medium provides the material from which to perturb the boundaries of musical aesthetics. Today we encounter a situation in which the aesthetics of failure or dissent are comfortably subsumed within the vocabulary of commercial pastiche. Where software manufacturers produce plug-ins to homogenise digital distortion alongside a healthy trade in circuit-bent electronics over the internet, so too the rhetoric of subversion is increasingly indistinguishable from the neo-liberal reflexivity of governments, institutions and states, and our tactics the selfsame logics of viral capital and soft control. It might seem that our noise echoes in a vacuum. If we?re screaming, we?re not making any sound. We may need to reconsider the apparatuses of noise. Taking a theoretical perspective that draws from Jacques Attali onwards to writers today such as Steve Goodman, Mattin, Anthony Iles, and Simon Reynolds, we call for papers that foreground noise as a constructive assemblage of audiosocial tactics. From such a perspective noise is not a negatory act that positions the disruptive force outside of what is being disrupted. Instead, noise becomes a constructive interference that perturbs the boundaries of a system from within, may dissemble complex asymmetries and foreground structural dispositifs. As a result we invite papers that deal not only with categories of aesthetic dissonance or vibrational force, but invite an expanded view of noise as a collection of sonic strategies that engage social, technical, political and economic concatenations: * The Politics of Dissent: The role of various manifestations of noise in political protest, broadcast, territorial dispute and warfare * Noise and the Body: Engaging issues such as psychoacoustics, affect, pain, nausea, gender, and desire * Material: The politics of sound pressure, vibration and timbre * Music: Noise genres, compositional techniques and processes, performance and improvisation * Sensory Anthropologies of Noise and Silence * Political Economy of Noise: An expanded view that treats of radical economics, debates around free culture, intellectual property and new modes of consumption and distribution * Counter-Theory: Writing that provokes normative assumptions within canonical musicology, theory and audio culture * Technologies of Noise: Exploring changing practices around analogue, digital and networked media, tracing the trajectories of information theory, digital signal processing, compression techniques and concerning a range of psychoacoustic and compositional algorithms in relation to definitions of noise * Failure and Exploit: Tactical media, hactivism, glitch, circuit-bending, and zombie media * Noise Control: Broadcast policy, noise abatement, and acoustic ecology * Histories of Noise: Across culture, theory and aesthetics * Audio Futurology: Understanding noise as a form of socio-political divination * Feedback and Reflexivity * Inaudible Noise Interference balances its content between academic and practice based research and therefore accepts proposals for both academic papers and accounts of practice based research. *Deadline for Abstracts: December 16th****2011 to **editor at interferencejournal.com* **** For more information, and submission guidelines please see: http://www.interferencejournal.com/submission-guidelinesor contact editor at interferencejournal.com -- ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ John Hopkins exploring the patterns and flows of cosmological power @ http://neoscenes.net/ http://tech-no-mad.net/blog/ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
