For more information, look up http://puredata.info/community/organization/pd-berlin/pd-berlin-users-group. We also encourage you to take an active part, and put up suggestions for topics you want to talk about / topics you want to be talked about. Pd-Berlin Google group: You can join the open group http://groups.google.com/group/pd_berlin, and make questions to the users there. Doors are open from 20h-20h15. After that they'll be closed, and you will have to call someone from the Pd-meeting to get in. To get a telephone number to call or confirm assistance you can write to info_at_minitronics.net. Please, don?t call to the staff of NK to open the doors. They let us use the space but we have to take care about having the meeting without producing any disturbance to them, and to clean the space after the meeting. We would apreciate if you would send us a small mail to info_at_minitronics.net with your name, Pd experience and interests, so that we know how many people might be coming. Or put your name in the pd-berlin wiki page. We would like to thank the support and willingness of NK in the organization of these events. The ixi lang is a live coding (see toplap.org) programming language for computer music. It allows the musician to program in realtime in front of an audience that is able to follow the proceedings by means of a video projection, thus involving the audience in the thought processes of the composer. The ixi lang is a particular take on the livecoding problem, as it allows for quick setup of musical patterns. It is a humouristic language that gives the audience clear message of what is going on, no understanding of programming is needed to understand the performance of the ixi lang. As such it has become a general musical instrument suitable for live improvisation and fast musical responses. The goal was to be able to create a tune with rhythm and melody within a few seconds from the performance starting. The language should also be understandable to non- programmers who would be able to follow clearly the performer?s train of thought. It was implemented in SuperCollider, enabling the use of all its available synth definitions, audio busses, sample buffers, and language constructs. After the presentation, Thor Magnusson, co-creator of the ixi software, will perform with the ixi lang, exploring its musical constraints and potential. http://www.vimeo.com/ixi http://www.ixi-audio.net/ixilang/ Sunday, 02.10.2011, 21:00h Miscel?nea. Well actually about a week ago now. The details follow: -- Rivers Home September 25 marks World Rivers Day, and to celebrate this special moment Flaming Pines is releasing the first five installments of the label's 10-cd series Rivers Home. As our environment continues to change, rivers represent some of our most vulnerable eco-systems with urban runoff, over-fishing, changing rain patterns and the clearing of river banks just some of the challenges to river systems worldwide. Rivers Home sees Marcus Fischer, Field Rotation, Broken Chip, Kate Carr and Billy Gomberg, each present an ode to a different piece of water on their own three inch CD. This release is about the challenges facing rivers, but it is also a celebration of the connections we forge with the rivers and streams in our lives, whether they be polluted canals in Brooklyn, which Billy Gomberg has focused on, more mighty systems like the Marcus Fischer's Willamette River in Portland or surprising rivers, like Kate Carr's study of the Brisbane River which experienced a one-in-100 year flood in January this year. Mastering: 12k, apart from Kielerfjorden, mastered by Christoph Berg. Each mini CD is $6, or you can get the set with free postage for $30. These field recordings were collected by Nimalan Yoganathan over two summers in 2007 and 2008 while traveling throughout Southeast Asia. He attempts to demonstrate the inherent rhythms and melodies of both natural and human environments. Nimalan Yoganathan is a Montreal sound artist and musician who holds a BFA in Electroacoutic Music (Concordia University). He focuses on the sculpting of field recordings within his works from his travels through bustling cities, desolate landscapes, and spiritual sites. Nimalan often attempts to mimic the timbral and rhythmic characteristics of such natural sounds using synthetic gestures. In a time when global communities are being plagued by noise pollution, he believes it is crucial to preserve and accentuate the subtle but musical sounds hidden all around us. Nimalan is also involved with radio production, multimedia installation art, and sound design for film. He has released experimental Dub and Hip-Hop albums on labels including Le Son 666 and Panospria (No_Type). His works have been disseminated internationally at festivals and venues including Chicago Calling, Tonic (NYC), Hartware Medien Kunst Verein (Berlin), MUTEK (Montreal), Suoni per il Popolo, Art?s Birthday, Darling Foundry, OBORO, and Soci?t? Des Arts Technologiques (SAT). He has collaborated with and performed alongside numerous musicians including Sun Ra Arkestra, Pauline Oliveros, Steinski, Deerhoof, Lightning Bolt, Deerhunter, Miracle Fortress, Aki Onda, and Alden Penner. Nimalan also plays in several electronic and free-jazz groups including the Chimurenga Electroacoustic Ensemble. again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated /*framework:afield*/ series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! framework tartu mnt 41 63710 ahja p?lvamaa estonia info at frameworkradio.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *(time / track)* 00:00 / Morning vendors on floating village, Ha Long Bay, Vietnam 03:18 / Sound walk through Hindu temple in Batu Caves, Kuala Lampur, Malaysia 06:18 / Buddhist ceremony in Cheng Hoon Teng Temple. Friday 14th?October, 7-9pm - Exchange Gallery Penzance Cornwall An evening of live audio-visual performances by Ana Carvalho and Tiago Pereira: The Subtle Technique in an Earthquake detector construction Ana Carvalho (7pm ? 8pm) Ana Carvalho is a PhD candidate in the department of Communication and Digital Platforms at Faculdade de Letras, Universidade do Porto, and a lecturer at University Fernando Pessoa, Portugal. Ana has been involved in several collaborative projects related to the philosophy and theory that inform, and are informed by, live audio-visual performance. She is also co-editor of the VJ Theory project and co-organizer of abertura events in Lisbon Major themes in Ana?s work address emotional celebrations of daily life, women?s achievements, fictional biographies and ways of knowing. For her Decalcomaniaevent, Ana will provide a live audio-visual performance in which she will mix video and sound recorded here in Cornwall, as well as in her native Portugal. The performance takes Ana?s recurrent themes of identity and self-representation into a biographical realm between real and fictional and plays with the symbolic representation of objects together with a ritualistic movement of the hands - that refer to the magician and the making of an illusion. The performance is a continuous creative and reflective process, open to new ideas and affinities with other authors (musicians, poets, film directors, etc). Ana?s performance forges direct links with her exhibited work, a series of five photographic prints concerned with similar ideas. www.visual-agency.net Cornwall decalcomania music Sessions Live Tiago Pereira (8pm ? 9pm) Tiago Pereira is an artist and video director who has developed a unique style of documenting, recollecting and mixing moving images. His cross-disciplinary video work focuses on the immaterial culture such as songs, rituals and performances that explore the concept of tradition and the foundations of collective memory. Tiago?s work creates an active, ongoing and impartial archive of Portuguese musical culture. His work is widely exhibited, performed and broadcast in Portugal and abroad. For Decalcomania Tiago has created a new video work, filmed in Cornwall, which acts as an active, ongoing and impartial archive of musicians in Cornwall now. Over the course of a weeklong visit in the summer of 2011, Tiago travelled Cornwall videoing numerous musicians of different disciplines, ages and genres, the resultant video is presented in the exhibition and forms the basis of his live performance. The live event serves as an activation of the footage he has collected. Tiago will perform with this footage in a manner that mixes, remixes and layers the divergent strands of musical practice in Cornwall today, creating a bold and ever-changing portrait of the musical landscape.?? http://vimeo.com/tiagopereira The entire evening will be a dynamic and stimulating exploration of the effects and application of audio-visual performance and its position in contemporary exhibition making, while also looking closely into Cornish culture and its landscape. It will be an exciting event, not to be missed, with an open bar! http://decalcomaniaproject.wordpress.com Very best wishes Laura Smith and Maria Christoforidou www.domallen.co.uk??? This series of seven episodes explores generative approaches (including algorithmic, systems-based, formalised and procedural) to composition and performance primarily in the context of experimental technologies and music practices of the latter part of the twentieth century and examines the use of determinacy and indeterminacy in music and how these relate to issues around control, automation and artistic intention. The participant will learn how to solder, build simple electronic circuits, create a synthesiser and to hypnotise themselves. Is it possible to hypnotise yourself and hallucinate using simple home made electronic devices? The workshop will focus on building simple hardware synths and controlling lights with 555 timer circuits. Once the circuit has been built the participant will then construct a wearable set of goggles, using the inner rolls from toilet roll and tin foil, which will focus the lights directly into their eyes. The rate the lights flicker and the frequency of audio are synchronised and controlled by the participant so they are able to fine tune the device in order to reveal some unusual visual patterns. For example, you may see psychedelic patterns when the rate of the light approaches flicker fusion, or perceive circular motion when the position of the lights are offset from one another. In short, you will create your own personal hypnotic, hallucinogenic flickering noise machine. The participant will keep everything they make during the workshop and take part in a group performance/hypnotic experiment. Date and Location Saturday 22nd October 2011 1pm - 6pm nnnnn, Unit 73a, Regent Studios, 8 Andrews Road, Hackney, E8 4QN Booking Cost for the workshop is ?25 which covers all materials and participants take home what they have built at the end. Part II* Produced and selected by Mark Gergis Link: http://bit.ly/qiQPsd MEMORABILIA. COLLECTING SOUNDS WITH? seeks to break through to unearth and reveal private collections of music and sound memorabilia. It is a historiography of sound collecting that reveals the unseen and passionate work of the amateur collector while reconstructing multiple parallel histories such as the evolution of recording formats, archiving issues, the collecting market and the evolution of musical styles beyond the marketplace. Each episode in the series is accompanied by an additional programme featuring an exclusive music selection by each of the collectors. *This show features a musical selection of some of the anomalies found in Mark Gergis' sound collection, discovering rare music from the Middle East and South East Asia.* *Mark Gergis on his music selection: *"After poring through hundreds of sound sources from a specific region, familiarity kicks in and things can tend to get repetitive and homogenous. But there are always surprise audio anomalies that stand out. One of my favorite things about collecting sounds is finding these anomalies in a specific regional style or genre I?m researching, mainly to see what the parameters were within that genre ? where it challenged itself, either intentionally or accidentally, whether it be in the production values, the instrumentation or in the fusion of styles (effectively or not). This collection focuses on a few standout materials recorded or acquired on the continent of Asia. The selections are from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Sumatra and Thailand and span at least four decades, but are artificially unified here by aesthetic, and reflect the nature of what I collect from a location ? sounds, radio recordings and music found on vinyl, cassette tape or MP3. Featured here are the lesser heard sounds of Arab and Islamic children's musics, a political song sung by the Iraqi women's federation of Saddam's Iraq, and more, intertwined with brief folk-pop musical selections from places I frequent or research often and field and radio recordings I have made while on location." As a solo performer, in small groups or large ensembles she moves in an area which is constantly stretching the borders of what is supposed to be DJ mixing, free improvisation and composed music. Oktober 2011 at 20.00 In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: TILTED FAWN Performance | Friday 28. Oktober 2011 at 20.00 Duration: 30 mins Free Entry _______________________________________________________________ LEAP is pleased to present TILTED FAWN - a collaboration between Melanie Lane and renowned electronic musician CLARK (Warp Records). Through a visual sound installation constructed by audio recordings, objects and choreography, TILTED FAWN builds a universe that offers a dialogue between sound, space and movement. In the intimacy of a solo, the environment transforms into an illustration of sonic landscapes in which the performer is confronted by the merging of bold sensory dimensions. Through the development of utilizing the ?old? technique and functionality of tape machines, the sound composition evolves into an organism that stirs a melancholy and introduces a stark, intimate and utopic world. Interested in the gaps and gasps in sounds conducive to the transmission of tales he sometimes hears in the ether, Routhier finds inspiration in everyday situations. His work has been presented internationally and nationally at the Vancouver Vibrates, the Silence and Signal & Noise Festivals (Vancouver), ISEA 2006 (San Jos?, CA), Open Air-Ars Electronica 2002 (Linz, Austria), Overgarden Festival (Copenhagen, Danemark), DLux Media Arts Festival (Melbourne, Australia), Global Mix Festival (Cracow, Poland), ICMC '94 (International Computer Music Conference, Florida, USA), La Panderia (Mexico City), ?cole des Beaux-Arts (Aix-en-Provence, France), Studio Cormier (Montr?al), Artspace Gallery (Peterborough, ON), Surrey Art Gallery(Surrey), Helen Pitt Gallery (Vancouver), Articule (Montr?al). Jean curated for the Surrey Art Gallery a series of audio artists as part of its ongoing Open Sound exhibit, as well as helped organize its audio art symposium in 2008 and 2009. He is one of the organizers for the soundwalking group and radio host and producer of Soundscape on CFRO 102.7FM. M. Simon Levin lectures within the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory, University of British Columbia and in Critical and Cultural Studies at Emily Carr University and has published a curriculum on Contemporary Public Art. He creates site-based systems that explore the aesthetics of engagement using a variety of designed forms and tools that address our many publics. These spatial and pedagogical projects, expand the social agency of art making, rethinking notions of space and place, authorship and audience. Working collaboratively and primarily within the public sphere, Levin?s work ranges from billboard projects, alternative tours of cities, land care centres and alternative mapping and telecommunication systems. Recently commissioned projects include a user-generated ?sousveillance? system and a global contributive new media platform, both showcased for Vancouver?s 2010 Cultural Olympiad. He has been artist in residence for the Vancouver Parks Board, the TechLab at the Surrey Art Gallery, Emily Carr University and at the International Art Space, Kelleberrin, Australia. He has exhibited, lectured and published locally, nationally and internationally. Glen Lowry is writer, cultural theorist and editor. He received his PhD in English from Simon Fraser University, where he specialized in contemporary Canadian literature and culture. Lowry's research focuses on collaborations among artist researchers and other academics. As one core member of Maraya since 2007, he has facilitated and participated in numerous presentations internationally and locally, including Art Dubai (2010), Learning From Vancouver symposium held at Western Front (2010), Interactive Futures '09: Stereo, and ISEA 2011 Istanbul. From 2001-2011, Lowry edited the Simon Fraser University-based cultural journal West Coast Line. Pacific Avenue (LINEbooks, 2009) is his first poetry collection. Lowry is the Assistant Dean of Critical Studies and Community Engagements at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Henry Tsang?s projects have been exhibited internationally, incorporating digital media, video, photography, language and sculptural elements in the exploration of the relationship between the public, community and identity in the new global order. Projects in the public sphere range from community-based curatorial and engagement practices to permanent commissioned artworks. Welcome to the Land of Light is a 100 metre-long installation located on the seawall handrail along Vancouver's False Creek. He has also worked with artists? collectives which produce temporary public art installations on shared political concerns, including The Association for Noncommercial Culture and Collective Echoes Youth Public Artists Collective, and has mentored many young artists through various programs. Video installations such as Orange County, 2004, and Olympus, 2006, shot in California, Beijing, Torino and Vancouver, examine overlapping urban and socio-political spaces; and Napa North, 2008, looks at the relationship between wine, real estate and cultural translation in British Columbia?s Okanagan Valley. His curatorial projects (Self Not Whole: Cultural Identity & Chinese-Canadian Artists in Vancouver, 1991; Racy Sexy: Race, Culture and Sexuality, 1993; and City at the End of Time: Hong Kong 1997, 1997) span the local to the international. Details on the Live!iXem Call 2011, and how to submit are: . at this link: http://www.ixem.it/live!ixem2011/call.html . on this downloadable PDF in english or PDF in italian Please feel free to pass on to other interested parties. Sorry for cross posting. Call for Proposals - Sound Installations in Ex Stabilimento Florio della Tonnare di Favignana e Formica Favignana Island Italy AntiTesi in collaboration with the Superintendence for Cultural and Environmental Heritage of Trapani,, is announcing a Call for Proposals for Sound installations to present at Ex Stabilimento Florio delle Tonnare di Favignana e Formica in Favignana island. This call is connected to the Eighth edition of the Live!IXem festivals of music, sound and electronic arts. The aim is to highlight the works of those artists who, involved in an experimental and creative exploration, use sound, integrating it with electronic audio-visual and digital design for Art installations in specific sites. Another aim is to witness the new aesthetic in contemporary art through a new way to conceive and carry out works within (or outside) of architectural spaces. In this regard, the spaces that will host this could not be more appropriate: the former Florio Tuna factory on the island of Favignana in Sicily, the largest of the Mediterranean, which takes its name from a family of entrepreneurs that at the beginning of the twentieth century was the great protagonist in Sicily, the Belle Epoque. The ancient structure located in the largest of the Egadi islands, were obtained after the recent restoration of museum space, a conference room with 400 seats and a guest room. To make this call even stronger there will be a collaboration between Live!iXem and OpenSound a platform that brings together seven European partners to create a project for cooperation and exchange that puts the sound in the middle of a series of outreach and artistic initiatives. Open Sound is in fact a Grundtvig project for mobility and partnership in the training supported by the EU through through the agency LLP - Life Long Learning Programme. Thanks to this partnership, Sicily will be the first venue where the festival will converge with some of the major representatives linked to the European art scene and musical sound research. During the festival, workshops will be conducted by some of the guest artists (the access to workshops is free of charge): this will contribute to become familiar with the locations of the former Florio Tuna factory on the island of Favignana. SUBMISSIONS We encourage proposals for site specific Sound Installations that will have to be set up in one of the locations of the Ex Stabilimento Florio della Tonnare di Favignana e Formica in Favignana Island Italy. Subscription and participation to the call are free of charge. It will be necessary to explore the locations through specific preparatory visits during Live!iXem Festival 2011, from 8 to 11 december 2011. Suggested topics for presentations include, but are not limited to: Best practices in Sound and architecture Techniques used for Sound/Art Installation Sound and environment/Sound ecology Site specific Software & network management History & aesthetic theory of Sound Art/Installation Teaching & pedagogical strategies Hardware (audio, interface, computers, loudspeakers) Software environments & frameworks Artists/Composers? perspectives on their own works For more information and instructions for submissions, please refer to the website, http://www.ixem.it or download Call in PDF.
