A Playlist for the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam Message-ID: SoundBlog, April 30th, 2011 [#405]Hear It! On Thursday April 28th, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam opened up its galleries to an extra-ordinary event of sound-art & music. For 'Hear It! A Playlist for the Stedelijk Museum', a collection of performances, installations and sound works was brought together, that only too rarely - if ever - can all be experienced in one place and on the same evening. The event included performances by Paul Panhuysen, Carl Michael von Hausswolff, Claron McFadden, Sarah van Sonsbeeck, Hans Aarsman, Brandon LaBelle, Alog, and Schola Cantorum, and sound works by Mark Bain, John Cage, Alvin Lucier, La Monte Young, Dick Raaymakers, Gert-Jan Prins, Pierre Bastien and Allard van Hoorn. It was an honor and a pleasure to introduce this special evening, in the museum's Auditorium. For those who were not there on Thursday at 20h: in this SB-edition you will find the - illustrated - text of my introduction, complete & unabridged. Artists and inventors such as Nam June Paik, Steina & Woody Vasulka, Don Buchla, Serge Tcherepnin, Dan Sandin and David Tudor all constructed their own unique instruments long before similar tools became commercially available or freely downloadable--often through a long, rigorous process of self-education in electronics. John Cage once quipped that Serge Tcherepnin's synthesizer system was "the best musical composition that Serge had ever made", and it is precisely Cage's reformulation of the concert score from a list of deterministic note values to a set of indeterministic possibilities that allowed the blurring of lines between instrument-builder and music composer that followed. The current issue of Vague Terrain, curated and edited by Derek Holzer, features an eclectic range of young, contemporary artists who have revisited and expanded upon the philosophies and works of this earlier generation. Operating at the extreme edges of the DIY electronics scene, builder-composers such as Peter Blasser, Jason R. Butcher, Moritz Ellerich, Lesley Flanigan, Martin Howse, the Loud Objects (Kunal Gupta, Tristan Perich and Katie Shima), Jessica Rylan and Synchronator (Bas van Koolwijk & Geert-Jan Prins) all represent some of the most radical and idiosyncratic artistic approaches to creative circuitry of the moment. Their compositions take the form of systems which provide a map of what is possible, but lack a prescribed route on how to get there. The discovery?-and the risk?-is left to the moment of the performance. -- Derek Holzer http://macumbista.net From murmer at murmerings.com Mon May 2 07:41:18 2011 From: murmer at murmerings.com (. m u r m e r .) (JULIAN COPE) ALEXANDER RISHAUG "Shadow Of Events" CD Rishaug's music is informed by classic minimal composers such as Steve Reich and Terry Riley as well as 90's electronica acts such as the Oval/Microstoria axis and like-minded but more obscure artists associated with the Mille Plateaux label (remember Neina?) but surely wouldn't be out of place on a contemporary label like Kranky or Type. Repetitive and seemingly simple melodic patterns are combined with (and sometimes obscured by) decaying monlithic drone layers creating a hazy melancholic landscape slowly unfolding its beauty. Granular shoegazy tones are building up in slow-motion recalling the patient yet precise and complex drone works of Stephan Mathieu, William Basinski and Machinefabriek's Dauw album. Castro (b.1983) is a sound artist from Lisbon, graduated in Sonic Arts at Middlesex University, where he studied, among others, with Salom? Voegelin, John Dack, Thor Magnusson and Martin Robinson. He started his artistic education in 2001 in the areas of contemporary dance and performance arts at the performative arts centre c.e.m-centro em movimento (Lisbon); since then he has been a regular collaborator of this space. Andr??s practice has been shifting between two different universes. On the one hand, the computer music world, with its meditative textures, harsh noisy sounds, blips, and experiments with custom-built software with SuperCollider. On the other hand, a phonographic activity, in which he goes out with a microphone trying to capture the incredible aural diversity of our world and the voices and stories that hide in each person. Most of Andr??s work has in common the evasion of visual elements, an acousmatic sound that aims to subvert the dominance of the vision over the other senses. In recent years he has nourished a growing interest for the radiophonic medium, which has become a fruitful source of inspiration and for which he has been creating pieces for 3 years. A significant part of his practice has been developed through collaborations with other artists, such as the ongoing improvised music duo with Martin Aaserud; The performances Entre? and A Verdade da Alface and the current project of sound portraits of mothers and their babies with Laura Ba?uelos; the sound design for the installations of Maria dos Milagres and Miguel Rafael, and the dance choreographies of Ainhoa Vidal, Jos? Vidal and Sofia Neuparth. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We also encourage you to take an active part, and put up suggestions for topics you want to talk about / topics you want to be talked about. Pd-Berlin Google group: You can join the open group http://groups.google.com/group/pd_berlin, and make questions to the users there. Doors are open from 20h-20h15. After that they'll be closed, and you will have to call someone from the Pd-meeting to get in. To get a telephone number to call or confirm assistance you can write to info_at_minitronics.net. Please, don?t call to the staff of NK to open the doors. They let us use the space but we have to take care about having the meeting without producing any disturbance to them, and to clean the space after the meeting. We would apreciate if you would send us a small mail to info_at_minitronics.net with your name, Pd experience and interests, so that we know how many people might be coming. Resonance is one of the elements that give meaning to the music of Tellus. With a strongly percussive focus, an economy of means and a thorough-going frugality, both musicians use resonance as the thread that links each musical stroke, stretching out time and allowing the sounds to decay into whispers which invite introspection. The other structural axis of Tellus is that of amplification, functioning as a sound-lens which heightens our awareness of the subtler frequencies. Thanks to this lens we start to discover that sounds generated with objets trouv?s and those emanating from musical instruments are complementary and, indeed, imitate each other. Without abusing any systematic doctrine, shapes emerge, only to return to silence ? a silence often pregnant, but whose very expectancy dissolves all haste. *+info_tellus http://costamonteiro.net/index.php?/projects/tellus/* * //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// * FROM: ::::::::::CIRCUIT TOR?AT:::::::::: http://www.circuittorcat.com C/ Terol, 8 bajo 2 Barrio de Gracia Barcelona //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// listen LIVE @ mEtaminaFreeNetRAdio http://metaminafnr.hotglue.me/ ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| ----------- ----- -- - -- mEtaminaFreeNetRadio >> http://metaminafnr.hotglue.me/ >>>http://noconventions.mobi/noish -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It is ambient music. He has worked on his craft to the point where a label is prepared to invest in getting it made into a CD, promoted and sold. I don't do this for the money - I do it for the love of the music. I work hours and hours and hours per week on it. As well as hold down my main job. I do it out of love for the music. But if I invest ?900 and don't receive a near break even return then I go out of business and the music is not released.... the smaller labels get forced out and we are left with myspace unsigned and the majors. I know this will come off as harsh, but it really bothers me people use this list more for promoting their own stuff than just talking about ambient music. You're already investing in making music, but it sounds like you're involved more fir making some sort if cash flow as opposed to just making music for the sake of art/the love of it. If I were a musician, I'd be flattered my music was being shared. At least it's good enough to be shared. If people dig it, they will buy it. There are a ton of artists I invested in after I downloaded their stuff. The investment is there for you, don't blame file sharing for losing sales. Maybe people want to try before they buy, bc technology in this day and age allows them to do so. Just saying. Well I don't know who has done this - they hide behind stupid names in Fileshare etc - but whoever you are - you are selfish, thoughtless and stupid. I can quite understand why a bootlegged copy's existence spoils the launch and undermines all the effort that went into producing the work whether it ultimately hurt sales or not (a subject much debated elsewhere). Musicians and their promoters should at least have a choice when their work becomes available as a whole. In the world of increasingly 'democratised' media and distribution, creatives and those who aid them seem to have few rights left. On 7 May 2011 16:10, Maya R. (May 9th 2011 at midnight). Gone are the days of keeping it quiet in Praveen's living room and in are the days of 2am bass bins blasting! In contrast to past late night PLab DJ sets I have spun, I will be performing live as Isomer Transition, the space captain from the future who guides sonic journeys through inner and outer space. Not sure what exactly that means? Here’s a link: Isomer Transition’s MNMLKTCHN May 4 2011 podcast: http://app.emailtransmit.com/util/clickthrough.php?a_i=10077245&t_i=70321&t=o&url=http%3A%2F%2Fsoundcloud.com%2Fmnmlktchn%2F015-mnmlktchn-podcast-isomer A few words about the Isomer Transition project: These sets are entirely improv, which is why no two sets sound the same. Beats are programmed on the spot, tracks are edited on the fly, and everything is remixed and reassemble as it is being heard. Live programming is layered with loops and tracks to create never-heard-before music. The computer is played as an instrument, and is an aid in conducting a virtual robotic orchestra, guided to create electronic dance music. Robert Henke has written some good articles that try to put into words what is happening during a modern computer aided live performance. http://app.emailtransmit.com/util/clickthrough.php?a_i=10077245&t_i=70321&t=o&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.monolake.de%2Finterviews%2Fsupercomputing.html http://app.emailtransmit.com/util/clickthrough.php?a_i=10077245&t_i=70321&t=o&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.monolake.de%2Finterviews%2Fhitchhiker.html Come out, have a good time, and enjoy some good music with some great people. I've been in the industry and I know how it is. You're taking this way too personally, as in the person deliberately planned to hurt you and specifically you only. People do not share for an ego boost. They share bc they want people to hear what they feel is great music. And they will buy the CD. If they don't buy today, they will tomorrow. They *WILL* always buy. For those who don't buy this release, they'll buy the next one. However, as long as one puts out quality, they'll always be able to sell it. Do not think like a major label, bc look at the state they're all in. They cry and cry and still make cookie cutter crap. For the love of music, please get off your high horse and calm down. I bet you've downloaded music before. You cannot say you didn't, bc anyone who owns a computer and has a brain downloads music. A ton of people in the industry download music. I work hours and hours and hours per week on it. As well as hold down my main job. I do it out of love for the music. Previous festivals have explored field recording, mimesis, the architectural impact from sound, and many other concepts and themes. The 2011 festival explores the use of radio through composition and new media presentation. Looking back to the seminal works of Stockhausen, Cage, and Tenney through the culture jamming theatrics of Negativland and into the psychological minimalism of John Duncan, radio has served an invaluable and expressive tool within the continued history of avant-garde composition. Hence, 23five will present works including Richard Garet's grey-noise constructions mined from radio interference and electromagnetic disturbances and Byron Westbrook's multichannel diffusion of live transmission and reception of radio signals./ /23five has collected works from numerous sound artists who have used radio as a principle medium in composition for the purpose of being broadcast over the radiowaves. Few things I wanted to mention. First, it's really unfortunate that a reviewer would upload a promo review album. That's just shameful, really. I have seen my albums all over illegal mp3 sites myself and have had success in getting them removed by contacting the registrar or simply sending an e-mail to the "contact" e-mail on the site. When it comes to the Russian sites, they usually seem to charge a few cents for the downloads, so I don't bother with those sites because, really, who is going to send their credit card to these guys? Some people might, but I think it's a small number of folks - and as was previously mentioned, the Russian sites don't even respond anyway. When it comes to sending out promos, one idea I had was to offer the promos in a format that would not make it easy to upload. Either offer a download version with low-res mp3s, or if the reviewer insists on a physical CD, then send a CDR version with audio drops, or some other periodic sound / drop-out. I know, it may sound silly because in the end, once the actual sales start, someone is going to upload a high-res version, but it would at least inhibit the early reviewers from proliferating a final sounding product. That said, I don't plan on doing this myself, but it's just an idea. At this point, I think it behooves us (the artists and labels) to pursue contact with the illegal sites if we see our music - our art that we've worked so hard at. Even if they don't take it down, it might make them annoyed or even a little nervous. OK, now off to send a bunch of e-mails to a site that has a bunch of my loop libraries for illegal download (it just popped up a couple days ago). At least I have SONY to threaten them with on this. :) J. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.numinamusic.com http://www.myspace.com/numina http://www.facebook.com/pages/Numina/314977930870 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- _____ No virus found in this message. While each of them had previously collaborated with both of the others, their concert as Untight at the Theaterkapelle in Berlin marked the first time (with the exception of a short sound check) the trio has played together - ever. Listening to the two sets of tightly interwoven structures and organic blending of styles - ranging from classic synthesizer music and rock tropes to free-form improv and laptop electronics - it is perhaps hard to believe that none of the music was mapped out beforehand, the musicians simply trusting they would find a common course in the act of playing and listening. All the programming is done with the supercollider programming environment. I will spend a couple of days in Florence. I will have some cds to promote (mine and from my label - by Francisco Lopez, Z'ev) and I will probably do some field recording around too I will have some time free so If anybody is into experimental music and wants to buy/exchange cds or is just interesting in meeting me for some artistic talking, he/she may contact me - I can speak Italian, too, though they are a bit rusty I will come back in Italy this July and I am looking for places I could perform again then - if anyone is interested let me know www.marinoskoutsomichalis.com www.agxivatein.com -- Marinos Koutsomichalis Music Research Center, University of York Contemporary Music Research Centre (CMRC) Faculty of Music Technology & Acoustics - TEI of Crete www.marinoskoutsomichalis.com From mmi at art.pte.hu Wed May 18 18:09:38 2011 From: mmi at art.pte.hu (Kovacs Balazs) Date: Thu, 19 May 2011 00:09:38 +0200 Subject: [microsound-announce] city strings@brno, 21-22. mai Message-ID: <4DD443A2.8070602@art.pte.hu> City strings - Brno mechanical & network installations ? 21-22. mai. 2011. The traditional interpretation of the "acoustic community" (term by Barry Truax) means currently a delocalized electronic one. According to this, the City strings project aims to transform the sonic network of Brno a little bit, just for a while. We place installations on the public area, which are controlled by indirect ways, like pulling an invisible string. It is possible to use the installations either by walking around on the street or by using the website: just see the list of works on the sidebar right! The project is presenting the works created during a physical computing workshop at Forum 4AM, and organized by hungarian sound artist Bal?zs Kov?cs. Or put your name in the pd-berlin wiki page. We would like to thank the support and willingness of NK in the organization of these events. Hence, 23five will present works including Richard Garet?s grey-noise constructions mined from radio interference and electromagnetic disturbances and Byron Westbrook?s multichannel diffusion of live transmission and reception of radio signals./ /23five has collected works from numerous sound artists who have used radio as a principle medium in composition for the purpose of being broadcast over the radiowaves. RUMOURS FROM THE EASTERN UNDERGROUND #2. Czech Republic and Slovakia Message-ID: *Podcast: PARASOL ELEKTRONICZNY. RUMOURS FROM THE EASTERN UNDERGROUND #2. Czech Republic and Slovakia Curated by Felix Kubin* A decade after the end of the communist regime, Czech and Slovakian underground musicians began channeling the national legacy of progressive dissident rock to virgin soil. Their new amalgams consist of mechanical sound art, free improvisation, 8-bit folklore and industrial club culture. Link: http://bit.ly/lMEejg Related info: http://bit.ly/jRPWiK *Summary: * Part two of PARASOL ELEKTRONICZNY. RUMOURS FROM THE EASTERN UNDERGROUND explores the music scenes of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Our local umbrella agents were Milo? Vojtechovsk? and Zuzana 'Friday' P?ikrylov?. Milo? is part of an older generation that witnessed the transitory period from the communist era to the Velvet Revolution in 1989. He is currently one of the main curators at the prolific cultural center ?kolsk? 28 in Prague. Zuzana, a journalist and media theorist from Brno, was born in 1989. For PARASOL ELEKTRONICZNY she focused on the young scene that has formed around folk-inspired club noise pop in Brno and Bratislava. While Prague's current underground consists of a fragmented series of circles and sub-genres that tend to keep within their own boundaries, the Moravian scene in Brno is more compact and strongly influenced by the legacy of the European Rock In Opposition movement. The four artists interviewed by Milo? Vojtechovsk? and Petr Vrba - Peter Graham (aka Jaroslav ?tastn?), Ivan Palack?, Tom?? Proch?zka (aka Federsel) and Petr Ferenc - grew up in these two musical epicentres of the Czech Republic. They all mention progressive rock as an early influence but also point out the importance of improvisation and Cagean aleatorics in their music, which is an approach that doesn't yet have a long tradition in their home country. According to Peter Graham, who graduated from the Jan??ek Academy of Music in Brno, forward-thinking academic music was so zealously suppressed by the communist regime that the alternative rock scene - represented mainly by a dark visionary style of the Czech underground school of rock groups as Plastic People of the Universe, or DG 307 - became a haven for all younger generations of musical dissidents. 'The 1970s and 1980s were the decades of the rigid Neo-Stalinist regime installed by Soviet tanks in 1968 following Czechoslovakia's brief experiment in cultural and political liberalisation. It was an epoch that brought centralist control and conformism to the Czech arts. For long years, official contemporary music concerts were grey and boring affairs. Conservatism also ruled the music schools where composition was taught. (...) [However, some composers] tended to see themselves as the successors of the Czech avant-garde of the 1960s, i.e. of groups of composers who at the time were ostracised and driven underground into a position of musical dissent.' (Miroslav Pudl?k, 'Czech composers in the post-modern era', Chamber music - Czech Music CD Series 1, 2007) When the situation of artists relaxed in 1989, the younger generation was able to draw on a rich underground culture that had continued to exist during the communist regime. >From the sound aesthetics of surreal Czechoslovakian films to the expressionist soundtracks by Zden?k Li?ka (represented in this feature by short jingles and film excerpts) and the late experiments of Palack?/Graham and Petr Ferenc' Birds Build Nests Underground (BBNU), many of the works share a fascination with mechanics. These take the form of different organisms, such as Ivan Palack?'s amplified knitting machine, Jan ?vankmajer's human food apparatus in the macabre film trilogy 'J?dlo', and BBNU's improvised cinema of sound. Then there is Tom?? Proch?zka, a musician from Prague who is involved in the DIY multidisciplinary group Handa Gote and the neo-Krautrock band B4 and also works as a puppeteer, following the famous tradition of Czech puppet theatre with its taste for the demonic and grotesque. The leitmotif connecting all of these artists is the incantation of imaginary machines, sound alchemy and catoptrics. As Zuzana P?ikrylov?'s research shows, the younger generation is more at home in the digital realm of playful, edgy beats and cut-ups and has strong ties to club culture. Bands like Hugo & Zoe from Brno and Kyl The Sistem from Bratislava have created something of a folk exploitation craze, where improvisation is more evident in the social context than in the music. During the interviews, their playful and dynamic way of talking effortlessly shifts from statements to songs, dramatic quotations and beatbox noises. Michal Lich? of Urban Sounds Collective sees his roots in industrial culture, modern architecture and noisy club music. Like Kyl The Sistem, Lich? is based in Slovakia's capital, Bratislava, where the scene is less fragmented than its equivalent in Prague. 'We help each other,' he says, pointing out how important it is that the collective can organize events without external financial support. 'Everyone who comes to play in Slovakia will find that the audience is very open-minded and warm-hearted whereas the political culture is corrupt and mainly focused on profit.' In their typical sarcastic madcap style, Kyl the Sistem express this in a simple phrase: 'The hearts are empty, we are nihilistic but still full of love!.' * Felix Kubin, 2011.05.07 * *Featured artists (in order of appearance)* Ivan Palack? and Peter Graham (Jaroslav ?tastn?) - Brno (CZ) Federsel (Tom?? In response to ?Code of Contingency?, C&R will create a generative multi-channel audio work using recordings from inside the SELCHP power plant, a major incineration plant located in South Bermondsey near the Agency Gallery. Data from the power output of the plant and power consumption of the gallery will be used to inform the resultant audio of the work at any given time. As such the work is a sonic representation of the energy consumed by the works in the show throughout its duration. As part of their participation at Agency C&R will give an artist talk and workshop exploring environmental thinking, composition and media ecology with a focus on local sound issues and data sonification with special emphasis on multi-channel diffusion. Using the work as a discursive object, participants will think about strategies for creating an audio installation using field recordings exploring aleatoric, process and generative compositional techniques. The workshop will begin with a visit to show at Agency Gallery. It is open to everyone including those interested in acoustic ecology, generative composition, environmental art and sound art. Participants should bring their own laptops. If participants own recording devices, these should be brought as well. Bookings Please e-mail Sarah Jury at info at codeofcontingency.co.uk to reserve a place. A ?20 suggested donation is requested to cover costs of materials; we will then e-mail you payment instructions. Please note places are limited to 12 and should be booked well in advance. We would like to inform you of a new sound composition called '' r e V '' . r e V takes its cue from the Latin word revolutionem that means to return. For this composition there are recordings of online television broadcasts in real time, from the protests that took place in Madrid against the current political and economic system, in favor of the principle of popular sovereignty. In this regard one has to consider that online broadcasters have had numerous problems due to complaints from the institutions that have tried to stop their transmissions several times. r e V was composed following the very dynamics of the stream and its interruption; fragments of yelling, movement, instruments, comments, etc. were placed between sound streams obtained by isolating and elaborating background noises from the original recordings to reinforce the idea of human action, its expressiveness and the impossibility of its complete annihilation. *The human being stripped of any pre-fabricated system in search of its origin and existential integrity. * Special thanks to Canal 33 Madrid and all the people of the Plaza. ? idrioema 2011 ___________________________________ *Video:* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoLkj8ckEZ4 *Audio:* http://soundcloud.com/idrioema/idrioema-rev ___________________________________ www.idrioema.tk www.facebook.com/idrioema www.myspace.com/idrioema www.twitter.com/idrioema www.soundcloud.com/idrioema www.discogs.com/Idrioema-Nitea/release/2852601 Thank You ! ____________________________________ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It allows you to get your hands ? and ears ? on interactive works that showcase how sound can facilitate interaction in product design, mobile media, communicating scientific data, interactive art, and more. Sound can be one of the principal channels conveying information, meaning, and aesthetic/emotional qualities in interactive contexts. The 12 works of this exhibition showcase the use of Sonic Interaction Design within arts, music and design, and also provide examples of sonification for research and artistic purposes. The exhibition features works by: Christian Graupner, Roberto Zappal?, Norbert Schnell & Nils Peters (DE/IT/FR), Espen Sommer Eide (NO), Gerhard Eckel (AT), Jessica Thompson (CA), Joshue Ott & Morgan Packard (US), Michael Markert (DE), Natasha Barrett & Karen Mair (NO), Ren? This one is inspired by the *Uncanny Valley*, a term coined by the Japanese roboticist Masahiro Morithat appeared for the first time in 1970 in the Journal *Energy. *The* Uncanny Valley* is one of the most intriguing and poetic concepts in the field of robotics in that it conveys an important message about how human beings interact and how we deal with the perception of the unfamiliar and death. In this show, Zepelim follows the curves of the Uncanny Valley chart, presenting a sound collage featuring sounds from industrial robots to humanoid robots and uncanny soundscapes.
