ARRINGTON DE DIONYSO: Unleashing the Voice in Creative Music: From Raw Expression to Refined WORKSHOP

The human voice is the oldest instrument of artistic expression and our primary means of day-to-day communication. Cultivating an awareness of vocal ability and understanding the process for removing vocal limitations is a useful undertaking for any person. The purpose of this workshop is to help individuals free their voices.

Participants will leave the workshop with an enhanced understanding of the expressive capacity of the voice across cultures, and the tools to expand their own voices beyond everyday speaking and singing.
in this workshop we will explore the voice as an instrument of the body and soul. Participants will receive instruction in extended techniques used by contemporary musicians and sound poets, while gaining awareness of multiphonics as practiced in a number of traditional and non-traditional settings, with particular emphasis on Tuvan throat singing. Instruction in these enriching techniques will be accompanied by discussion of aesthetic concerns related to the musical cultures covered.
The workshop will be limited to 12 students, so that each participant may have the opportunity to perform for each other in an intimate, supportive environment. This workshop is excellent for those working in interdiscliplinary fields, with interest areas in music, dance, theater, poetry, visual arts, healing sound, and ethnomusicology.
Arrington de Dionyso uses performance as a vehicle for driving through the nameless territories held between surrealist automatism, shamanic seance, and the folk imagery of rock and roll. Arrington performs on the bass clarinet, jaw harps, and his voice with a distinctly multiphonic ability inspired by Tuvan throatsinging and the ecclesiastics of Albert Ayler and Don Van Vliet. Pushing the envelope between musicality and pure energy, between shamanic ecstacy and lunacy, he enwraps rooms with resonant sound .
He tours constantly, and has performed or/and recorded with notable improvisers throughout the U.S.A., Canada, Italy, France, Israel and Japan. He presents workshops on improvising with the voice in conjunction with his travels around the world.

 there is no central repository of all the tracks in pristine 24-bit 
 wav, they all have come from the individual artists. so if you want 
 oggs, you'll have to track down the individual artists.

 we could do bulk transformation on them, but for what? you can't get 
 better fidelity than your source. and, speaking only for myself, i'm not 
 enough of an digital audio format ideologue [?] to put much work behind 
 this effort.

 also, even if encumbered by copyright, mp3 is still, in some sense, the 
 lingua franca of digital audio formats.

Registration is now open for the workshop in Acoustic Ecology curated by the Italian Soundscape Archive, AIPS (Archivio Italiano Paesaggi Sonori) and coordinated by musicians/sound designers Francesco Giannico and Alessio Ballerini. 

The aim of this workshop is to create a sonic representation of an urban soundscape, in this case the sound map of the Pigneto area in Rome, that will be also presented as an electroacoustic performance.

This event is part of a wider project, the Roma Soundscape Project, that aims at collecting an archive of the sound maps of the city of Rome.

A wide range of topics will be covered, from Sound Ecology to Acoustic Design, including the methodology of soundwalks, and the analysis, aesthetics and practice of the soundscape. The workshop starts on March 21, 2011, at 5pm in the newly inaugurated site of ?Forte Fanfulla? in via Fanfulla da Lodi n?5 in Rome. It will be possible to register at the same place, by presenting your personal data, until March 18 between 3 and 6pm, from Monday to Friday.

The maximum number of participants is 30. The workshop has a duration of 30 hours over a period of two and a half months, with three hours of sessions per week. The participants will engage in both theory and practice, and will produce a final project consisting of a performance/installation based on the collected materials and work developed during the workshop, as well as the creation of a dedicated website and video art clips.
The fees are 300 euros. A certificate in Sound Ecology and Acoustic Design - Roma Soundscape Project - will be issued at the end of the workshop.

Wir suchen f?r eine Installation, die sowohl an der KHM als 
auch auf dem Mehrklang Festival 2011 in Freiburg zur Auff?hrung 
kommen wird, nach 16Bit 44.1KHz WAV Files von "Musik" welche in 
der Zeit des Wirtschaftswunder bis zum Mauerfall (ca. 1950-1989)
ver?ffentlicht wurde. Senden Sie Ausschnitte von St?cken die 
Sie besonders sch?tzen, grauenhaft finden oder die einfach 
nur gut in diese Zeit passen.

Die eingereichten Soundfiles dienen als Ausgangsmaterial 
welches, chronologisch sortiert, weiter verarbeitet wird. Eine 
von oben auf die Installation gerichtete Kamera filmt das Puplikum 
und lokalisiert deren Bewegung, die dabei entstehenden Daten werden 
in Klang ?bersetzt. Auf diese Weise kann sich der Besucher auf einem festgelegten Koordinatensystem durch die Jahre bewegen und deren zugeordneten Musikschnipsel unterschiedlich erklingen lassen. Das 
Spektrum der Verfremdung reicht vom Originalklang bis zur 
Unkenntlichkeit, s?mtliche Titel verschiedener 
Stilrichtungen verbinden sich so zu einem 
neuen Klanggeflecht.

Die Files sollten zwei bis maximal zehn Sekunden lang sein und an 
die-fetten-jahre at gmx.de gesendet werden.

In the sixth episode of this series of podcasts, we encounter the
establishment of sound libraries, collections explicitly curated for
further use: sound objects presented as authorless, unfinished
ingredients. Though some libraries contain newly commissioned generic
sounds, specifically designed for maximum flexibility, the most widely
used sounds are often sourced from commercial recordings, freed from
their original context to propagate across dozens to hundreds of
songs. From presets for digital samplers to data CD ROMs to hip-hop
battle records, sounds increasingly detach from their sources, used
less as references to any original moment, and more as objects in a
continuous public domain.

 As hip-hop undergoes a conservative retrenchment in the wake of the
early 90's sampling lawsuits, a widening variety of composers and
groups expand the practice of appropriative audio collage as a formal
discipline. The aesthetic of the sound libraries gives rise to
recombinant genres like drum and bass, the use of sampling as
romanticized representation leads to the first quadruple platinum
World Music collage, and we encounter a novelty single that quietly
heralds a musical form that would soon become known as the Mash-up.

I'm glad to inform you about this event.
At the moment I'm artist in residence at Inspace, Edinburgh, developing a
site specific, multichannel and participatory work for 10 biosensing
wearable devices (Xth Sense).
The piece will be premiered tomorrow Tuesday along with my other work for
biosensing device Music for Flesh II; further info below.

Inspace is home to a joint research partnership between the School of
Informatics and New Media Scotland.

development residency by Marco Donnarumma, with Brendan F Doyle (Production

new solo piece by Marco Donnarumma; the second concert will be the premiere
of a multi-channel work specifically created by the artist for Inspace,
which will actively involve the audience in an augmented Cagean Musicircus.

A one day colloquium focusing on issues surrounding the marriage between 
electroacoustics and the performing and media arts. Topics include 
interdisciplinary collaboration, artistic and technological innovation,

laptop orchestras/ensembles, notation, preservation, stage techniques, 
audience interaction, related education and pedagogy, social and 
cultural contexts, and others.

Thirty laptopists from The Concordia Laptop Orchestra (CLOrk) and 
McMaster's cybernetic orchestra will collaborate with T-Stick performer 
D. Andrew Stewart in a live performance at the DB Clarke Theatre.

The concert will also include networked performances by CLOrk and The 
Cybernetic Orchestra, utilizing inter-client communication and control 
over wifi.

The Cybernetic Orchestra is directed by David Ogborn and CLOrk is 
directed by Eldad Tsabary.

This is the second podcast that accompanies MACBA's exhibition "Are
You Ready for TV?" In the Museum, you can see what happens when the
aesthetic of visual artists collides with the world of television. The
results are anything but what you'd expect to see on TV, full of
surrealistic interventions and disruptions. Or when artists work on
television, there is often an embedded critique of the medium,
something that questions the very essence of what our eyeballs are
glued to every night. As curator Chus Mart?nez writes about this show:
'This is not an exhibition about television, but one conceived from
the place of television. Its aim: to study how the diverse ways of
grasping images and the life of concepts contribute to tracing the
horizon of our cultural present.'

In our first podcast, we examined what happened when audio artists
used the sounds of television as a source for the audio works. The
results ? demonstrated to us by everyone from John Cage to the
Evolution Control Committee ? were rich and varied. For this podcast,
we actually listen to the soundtracks from the videos in the show
themselves. In essence, we treat the visual works as if they're audio
and see what happens. In most cases, we discover that the sounds
emanating from the visual works can stand on their own as great
listening experiences. In other works, the visuals and sounds are
deliberately 'uninteresting,' tending to highlight the mundane or the
insignificant experiences of life, which of course, are equally rich
in an inverted sort of way. Although there are hundreds of works in
the actual exhibition, we've selected ten to spotlight here that are
particularly varied and interesting and which, taken as a whole, can
provide you with the flavor of MACBA's exhibition, "Are You Ready for
TV?".

midst of tartu's *worldfilm festival* of ethnographic cinema, where we

MeetUp.

Meeting is free, public and open to all practitioners, beginners, artists,

might be interested in spending few hours patching, talking, sharing ideas,

What 
The workshop offers an hands-on experience and both theoretical and practical training in gestural control of music and bodily musical performance, deploying the brand-new biosensing technology Xth Sense. Developed by the workshop teacher Marco Donnarumma within a research project at The University of Edinburgh, Xth Sense is a framework for the application of muscle sounds to the biophysical generation and control of music. It consists of a low cost, DIY biosensing wearable device and an Open Source based software for capture, analysis and audio processing of biological sounds of the body (Pure Data-based). Muscle sounds are captured in real time and used both as sonic source material and control values for sound effects, enabling the performer to control music simply with his body and kinetic energy. Forget your mice, MIDI controllers, you will not even need to look at your laptop anymore. The Xth Sense biosensor was designed to be easily implemented by anyone, no previous experience in
electronics is required. The applications of the Xth Sense technology are manifold: from complex gestural control of samples and audio synthesis, through biophysical generation of music and sounds, to kinetic control of real time digital processing of traditional musical instruments, and more.

How 
Firstly, participants will be introduced to the Xth Sense Technology by its author and led through the assembling of their own biosensing wearable hardware using the materials provided. Next, they will become proficient with the Xth Sense software framework: all the features of the
framework will be unleashed through practical exercises. Theoretical background on the state of art of gestural control of music and new musical instruments will be developed by means of an audiovisual review and participatory critical analysis of relevant projects selected by the instructor. Eventually, participants will combine hardware and software to implement a solo or group performance to be presented during the closing event. At the end of the workshop, participants will be free to keep the Xth Sense biosensors they built and the related software for their own use.

Perspective participants 
The workshop is open to anyone passionate about sound and music. Musical background and education does not matter as long as you are ready to challenge your usual perspective on musical performance. Composers, producers, sound designers, musicians, field recordists are all welcome to join our team for an innovative and highly creative experience. No previous experience in electronics or programming is required, however participants should be familiar with digital music creation.

Participation is limited to 10 candidates.

THE ARTIST
Justin Varis (b.Cincinnati, OH 1979) is an American musician/composer living
in Los Angeles. Drawing on the rich history of musique concr?te while most
recently exploring minimal single instrument composition, his music is one
of contrast and contradiction. Abstract tendencies conjoin with basic
intimate melodies. Disruptive sequencing is utilized alongside loops and
repeating patterns. Meticulous audio editing creates calculated timing while
improvised passages lend expressive mistakes. Ultimately working towards
merging his audio with like-minded video and film artists, he is determined
to create a body of work that explores the non-linear narrative while
achieving accessibility to the greatest number of listeners. 
 
The work of Justin Varis has featured on a number of compilations and his
solo work (aka Claudia) was released on Frozen Elephants Music & Audiobulb
Records. In addition to continuously developing/performing live sets, he is
at present working on a number of collaborative projects set for release in
the near future.

so this was one of my favorite editions of framework:afield, from one of 
my favorite contributors, felicity ford, from the uk. felicity 
originally had this to say about the show:

        *S H E E P*

        Featuring highlights from Greg Wagstaff, the Sounding Dartmoor
        project and the excellent Freesounds archive, this episode of
        Framework has largely been arranged around Felicity Ford?s
        sheep-related recordings.

        Since October 2008, Felicity has been researching the history of
        the British Wool Trade in writing, knitting and sound-recording.
        Her explorations have taken her into the bleak Romney Marshes
        where wool was smuggled out of the country for hundreds of
        years, into smallscale spinning mills, and on the daily rounds
        of a Wensleydale flock keeper. Growing her own crop of Woad and
        recording the process of turning it into a dye, she has also met
        with sheep farmers and learned about the related Indigo-dyeing
        process.

        The sonic aspects of the British Wool Trade recording journey so
        far have been like wool itself; full of the stories of people,
        animals and the land, full of the loudness, earthiness, laughter
        and straightforwardness that accompany hard work, scratchy like
        the kemp in fleece, and sometimes ? like knitting ? repetitive,
        soft, and quiet.

Die 59. Folge der Ger?uschwelten bringt einen der Wegbereiter des Industrial
zum einzigen BRD-Auftritt 2010 nach M?nster: Robin Storey aka RAPOON. Storey
war Mitbegr?nder der legend?ren Formation Zoviet France, die mit
ger?uschhaft angereicherten rhythmischen Tracks das Genre der Industrial
Music mit pr?gten. Als Rapoon macht Storey seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre
loopbasierte Tracks, die oft Elemente au?ereurop?ischer Musikkulturen
inkorporieren. Nachdem sein Auftritt am 3.12.2010 dem Schneechaos zum Opfer
fiel, holen wir das Gastspiel heute nach, nicht verpassen! Au?erdem gibt es
die M?nster Premiere des Musikers Tetsuo Furudate, der bereits eine
Noise-Oper (sic!) geschrieben und sehr viele Theatermusiken komponiert hat.
Entsprechend Theatralisch sind seine Auftritte: jaulende Synthkl?nge,
Gitarre und gestenreicher Kreischgesang. Abgerundet wird der Abend mit einem
Kassetten-Ploing-Experiment des in Dortmund lebenden Exilamerikaners Jim
Campbell, aka The Preterite. Es verspricht ein bunter Abend zu werden!

Open Call to all Laptop/iPhone Musicians in Montr?al

Bring Your Own Laptop Orchestra
matralab (Hexagram Concordia) in collaboration with the SAT (Soci?t? des
arts technologiques) is organizing an artistic response to the disasters in
Japan (see the website for more info http://matralab.hexagram.ca/tamuke/).
The event will take place this friday at the SAT, 1201, Boulevard
Saint-Laurent in Montr?al.
Around midnight we would open the stage for all Laptop/iPhone musicians to
come together and create a collective sound work, led and inspired by Eldad
Tsabary, founder and director of the Concordia Laptop Orkestra (CLOrk).
Over the past weeks, matralab (Concordia University) has collected some news
audio footage from the disasters with the goal of creating an audiowave
representing the mayhem that occurred when the tsunami hit Japan.
We invite you to bring your laptop/iPhone and your own portable
speakers/amplifiers !

Come latest at 11pm.

At the SAT, you will be able to download the audio files of the disaster
from a local server.
Everyone is welcome to interpret, mashup, remix, livecode, or play back
those materials with their software of preference. We would prefer if you
used MAINLY these materials.
At 11:45pm, Eldad Tsabary will give a short and simple intro into his laptop
conducting technique, so that the sounds coming from all of you can be
coordinated in some way by visual signs.
At midnight, you will all go to the stage and perform together for 30 min.
Please feel free to forward this announcement to anyone who may be
interested. And come yourself, of course.
And please sign-up by e-mail to japan.vigil at gmail.com just so we can
estimate how large the BYOLaptop Orchestra will be.

Wenn eine Videoinstallation durch ihre Rezipienten beeinflusst werden 
kann, wenn sich kinetische Objekte bewegen oder wenn sich Licht und 
Atmosph?re in einem (Kunst-) Raum ver?ndern, dann steckt meist ein 
Arduino dahinter. Das speziell f?r K?nstler und Designer entworfene 
Mikrocontrollersystem Arduino kann als einfaches Interface zwischen 
Mensch und Kunst "vermitteln" oder aber Maschinen, Video, Licht und 
Sound steuern oder erzeugen.

Der Workshop richtet sich an K?nstler, die multimediale, interaktive 
oder kinetische Projekte umsetzen wollen. In 3 Tagen werden hierf?r die 
Grundlagen vermittelt. Wir arbeiten mit Lautst?rke, Licht und Bewegung, 
steuern Motoren und erzeugen Sound. Einfache Schaltungen, die Software 
und deren Anwendung f?r den Controller werden erlernt. Die Teilnehmer 
k?nnen neue Projekte entwickeln oder auch Hilfe f?r work-in-progress 
bekommen.

Kinetic Projects and Interactive Art with the Arduino

When visitors can influence the video installation they are watching, 
when kinetic objects are able to move or when light and atmosphere of an 
artistic space changes, than there is always an Arduino involved. This 
system was designed for the use of artists and designer. Therefore it is 
the ideal interface for connecting men and art. It also controls light, 
machines and sound in a stand alone mode.

The workshop addresses artists who want to realise multimedia 
installations, interactive projects or kinetic objects. The 3 days 
course covers the basic knowledge. We use sound, light and movement, we 
control machines and generate sound. The course will provide an insight 
into simple circuits, the Arduino software (Processing) and the general 
use of an Arduino. Participants can start new projects or get help by 
their work-in-progress.

I am one of the artists included in the collaborative project "Exquisite Corpse [Five Senses]". This is running 13-30 April 2011 at SoundFjord Sonic Art Gallery in London, England. In case anyone wants to meet up, I will be in London 11-12 April.

On the evening of the 11th I will be at SoundFjord to present some work in progress as part of their SoundShare event.
