For more information, look up http://puredata.info/community/organization/pd-berlin/pd-berlin-users-group. We also encourage you to take an active part, and put up suggestions for topics you want to talk about / topics you want to be talked about. Pd-Berlin Google group: You can join the open group http://groups.google.com/group/pd_berlin, and make questions to the users there. Doors are open from 20h-20h15. After that they'll be closed, and you will have to call someone from the Pd-meeting to get in. To get a telephone number to call or confirm assistance you can write to info_at_minitronics.net. Please, don?t call to the staff of NK to open the doors. They let us use the space but we have to take care about having the meeting without producing any disturbance to them, and to clean the space after the meeting. We would apreciate if you would send us a small mail to info_at_minitronics.net with your name, Pd experience and interests, so that we know how many people might be coming. Or put your name in the pd-berlin wiki page. We would like to thank the support and willingness of NK in the organization of these events. Unfortunately it is out of print. So I decided to make it available for download via bandcamp. Everybody, who is into those early 2000 clicks & cuts sounds and laptop microsound music with a leaning towards melodic sounds, may find this interesting, so check it out. It is available as a name your price download, which means that you can download it for free, as long as you leave me your email address in return. Don't get fooled by the "buy now" button. If you enjoy this album, you can also donate via paypal. Get your copy here: http://nqmusic.bandcamp.com/album/recording-syntax Here is, what Boomkat said about the album back then: "The eagle eyed will have observed NQ's quiet appearance on the last Progressive Form sampler "Forma". Recording Syntax lives up to its name, dismantling the very processes of music making. Nils Quak is operating at the forefront of the Progressive Form credo - 'Panel' has a glorious, vulnerable melody line, swathed in the rhythmic dissembling, crackles and syncopated pops. Nils teases out from the miasma a gentle progression, there's the giant bass presence of "Nhls", almost a signature tune we imagine, which enters a central section of distortion before building again into a bright melody heard from askance, an absolute killer modulation. "Disthant" and "PlEhR" both allow Nils to show further rhythm chops, while "Juri" allows him to retreat inside a luminescent shell, waves of sound lapping against your ears. You all know the story with Progressive Form by now - pretty well all essential stuff and NQ is no different." Hope you enjoy the record. Take care, Nils Quak :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Website: www.nhlsqaik.com Twitter: www.twitter.com/nq_music Blog: www.resonantstrata.com Bandcamp: http://nqmusic.bandcamp.com Soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/nq_nhlsqaik -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... G. Ballard, The Crystal World] Recrystallization, three day workshop event, July 18-20, 12pm-7pm+ with final night of lo-no amp performances 9pm+ Hosted by Supermarkt Berlin, Brunnenstrasse 64, Berlin, with Martin Howse, Ryan Jordan, and Jonathan Kemp. If life itself starts from aperiodic crystals that encode infinite futures within a small number of atoms, then the digital crystallization of the flesh by Capital limits these futures to the point of exhaustion. Recrystallization begins with the double premise that if computers and the minerals from which they are made are considered equally crystalline, then the decrystallization of the digital through positive feedback disrupts and escalates entropy through their structures and forward into their present pathology, Capital. Three sets of concurrent, feedbacking play and activities across three days: 1] Attempting to recover various minerals and metals (including copper, gold and silver) from abandoned computers through execution of various volatile and chemical processes. 2] The re-crystallisation of these minerals in novel arrays using raw/renditioned mineral assemblies including piezoelectrics, positive feedback, colloidal dispersions. 3] The re-purposing and embedding of components and structures within wider geological and geophysical systems. The final day of the workshop will be followed by silver/gold drinks and public lo-no amp performances. Workshop capacity limited to 12. Fee 30? (covering _all_ material costs) Booking/info: to reserve a place contact j... at xxn.org.uk//m... at 1010.co.uk or book using paypal to j... at xxn.org.uk. Participants take part at own risk: workshops include high heat and highly toxic processes - some safety gear provided and experiments conducted outside so gas masks not essential (but please bring mask/goggles/labcoat or similar if you have). Each field is separated with 'digital black' thereby framing or bracketing the 'rotted coordinates' - each one a point on a decayed map of a dystopian sound-scape. This release is an admixture of field recordings from around the world, surreal collage techniques and synthetic sounds derived from digital audio tools. 'The Knotted Constellation' allows listeners to lose themselves in the territory and not merely the map of their darkest imagination. With contributions by C. Spencer Yeh (Burning Star Core), Lithuanian sound artist Darius Ciuta and Berlin-based circuit bender Guido Henneb?hl among others. History Le Placard started in 1998 in Paris, France. At that time finding venues for alternative music was difficult, and police raids on unlicensed events were frequent. So instead Erik Minkkinen organised a headphone party in his small apartment, called 'placard' after the French word for 'cupboard'. Since then this concept has grown to an international streaming festival, with tens of cities providing listening rooms for local and remote performances. Placard has formed part of the Mutek, Transmediale, Garage and Pixelache festivals. The event in Paris has itself grown into an institution, running for 72 hours straight where the audience sleep with their headphones on, still listening. Mojo Ambient, minimalist post-rock with transformative powers; a truly serene yet stirring flow of music. It's made by young Brightonian James Simmons, but kick back and go with it and you're on Bowie-Eno's autobahns in the sky, glowing in a past future. Chris Roberts - Uncut .delicate songs blur into each other seamlessly, drifting on clouds, sounding almost robotic. 7/10 Rock Sound This second album from A Dancing Beggar offers a shifting pattern of tranquillity that produces both a calming and sophisticated landscape. They started to collaborate in 2006, first creating video art pieces, then moving more towards a combination of visual&sound performances, which is now their main focus. So far they self-released several live recordings, an album and an EP, which are available for download. During a year of gigs throughout Europe in 2010 they refined and extended their sonic palette. ?Susten Pass? showcases their broad range of composition skills, featuring both detailed, micro-edited studio tracks and raw, performance-inspired landscapes of sound. The album shifts between slow-motion sceneries (?Chrono?, ?A perfect Fairytale? and ?Commode?) and dark grinders like ?Feature Film? and ?Black String?. On the way it passes by electro-esque tracks like ?Downrock Crooza? and ?Risc Assembler? before taking a rest and having some beans&bacon at a lonely campfire (?Cowboy?). The album closes with the enthusiastic and shimmering ?Susten Pass? and ?Maitre du Village?. Track 14 is dedicated to the late Joe Papa from ?Controlled Bleeding?. Or put your name in the pd-berlin wiki page. We would like to thank the support and willingness of NK in the organization of these events. The theme of the exhibition is ?Architectural Explorations in Sound? in response to the pumping station house where the festival will take place and the wealth of acoustic information to be gleaned from the brick, glass and iron within the interior of the space. The McNeill Street Pumping Station, located near downtown Shreveport on the banks of Cross Bayou, is Shreveport?s original waterworks. The first water plant facilities, including steam-driven pumps, were installed on the site in 1887 as part of the construction of Shreveport?s first municipal water system, which was only the second such municipal system in the entire state. We are looking for artists and musicians for whom the relationship of sound and space are central to their practice. We are not as much interested in compositions and performances that apply themselves arbitrarily to the space as we are interested in artists whose work is inextricable from the context within which it is performed and/or written. The dialog that we want to engage in deals with the ephemeral within the acts of exploration and meditation upon the spaces that we inhabit and what information sound can give us about those spaces. If you have ever ?played a building?, created a microphone array to capture silence in an enclosed space, or live synthesized the sounds of a brick and iron smokestack creaking in the wind we invite you to submit a proposal. The project aimed to use creativity to make the local area and issues of society and citizenship come alive for young people, and establish new and lasting connections between students, schools and their communities. The audio features a Dartmoor soundscape with the students description of the landscape, in a combination of spoken word and background sounds. The idea for The School Looks Around originated from the rediscovery of a publication of the same name written in 1948, which promoted the idea of the local survey as an adventurous and open-ended process, a ?voyage of discovery into the life, history and organization of the locality?. The School Looks Around has been developed by Daisi, in partnership with Devon County Council Libraries, Devon Record Office, Publica (London) and Whitechapel Gallery (London), and participating Devon Schools. Bregman and Pierre A. Ahad. These CDs feature demonstrations of the research in psychoacoustics (Bregman) and musical psychology (Deutsch) by their respective authors. Both volumes are introduced with a spoken commentary by the authors themselves and accompanied by extensive booklets that further describe what is heard as well as instructions and suggestions on parameters such as playback volume, loudspeaker position, distance from the same, and whether headphones are required or not. In video art, syncing is constantly sought after through a range of means. This work highlights the existence of these points of contact found simply by placing the sound alongside the image. Natural landscapes and transformed sounds of nature, ?perceived by an immaterial ear, freed from our confused human time?, where the sounds and images of various origin come together to create a new world, another dimension in which un/real time and un/real-time performance are just terms that get mixed up with each other. Creating your own low cost biosensing wearable device for muscle sounds. See an Xth Sense performance at http://vimeo.com/20889787 Xth Sense: http://res.marcodonnarumma.com/projects/xth-sense/ http://marcodonnarumma.com/works/music-for-flesh-ii/ What The workshop offers an hands-on experience and both theoretical and practical training in gestural control of music and bodily musical performance, deploying the brand-new biosensing technology Xth Sense. Developed by the workshop teacher Marco Donnarumma within a research project at The University of Edinburgh, Xth Sense is a framework for the application of muscle sounds to the biophysical generation and control of music. It consists of a low cost, DIY biosensing wearable device and an Open Source based software for capture, analysis and audio processing of biological sounds of the body (Pure Data-based). Muscle sounds are captured in real time and used both as sonic source material and control values for sound effects, enabling the performer to control music simply with his body and kinetic energy. Forget your mice, MIDI controllers, you will not even need to look at your laptop anymore. The Xth Sense biosensor was designed to be easily implemented by anyone, no previous experience in electronics is required. The applications of the Xth Sense technology are manifold: from complex gestural control of samples and audio synthesis, through biophysical generation of music and sounds, to kinetic control of real time digital processing of traditional musical instruments, and more. How Firstly, participants will be introduced to the Xth Sense Technology by its author and led through the assembling of their own biosensing wearable hardware using the materials provided. Next, they will become proficient with the Xth Sense software framework: all the features of the framework will be unleashed through practical exercises. Theoretical background on the state of art of gestural control of music and new musical instruments will be developed by means of an audiovisual review and participatory critical analysis of relevant projects selected by the instructor. Eventually, participants will combine hardware and software to implement a solo or group performance to be presented during the closing event. At the end of the workshop, participants will be free to keep the Xth Sense biosensors they built and the related software for their own use. Perspective participants The workshop is open to anyone passionate about sound and music. No previous experience in electronics or programming is required, however participants should be familiar with digital music creation. Musical background and education does not matter as long as you are ready to challenge your usual perspective on musical performance. Composers, producers, sound designers, musicians, field recordists are all welcome to join our team for an innovative and highly creative experience. Participation is limited to 8 candidates. Requirements and further info Participants need to provide their own headphones, external soundcards and laptops with Pd-extended already installed. Free download is available at http://puredata.info/community/projects/software/pd-extended We will work either on Linux or Mac OSX => 10.6 operating systems. If you don't have access to none of them, please download a live distribution of Pure:Dyne at: http://puredyne.org/index.html Musicians interested in augmenting their favourite musical instrument by means of body gestures are encouraged to bring their instrument along. It may refer to "visualized music" in which the visual aspect follows the sound's amplitude, spectrum, pitch, or rhythm, often in the form of light shows or computer animation, while in other instances it may refer to "image sonification" in which the audio is drawn from the image in some fashion. Sometimes visual music describes a non-hierarchical correlation between sound and image, in which both are generated from the same algorithmic process, while in other instances, they are layered without hierarchy or correlation altogether. Both sound and image may be presented live, fixed, or as part of an interactive multimedia installation. The Knotted Constellation 32.47 about The Knotted Constellation (Fourteen Rotted Coordinates) : The Knotted Constellation is a cinematic sound narrative that moves the listener through a series of auditory fields. Each field is separated with 'digital black' thereby framing or bracketing the 'rotted coordinates' - each one a point on a decayed map of a dystopian sound-scape. This release is an admixture of field recordings from around the world, surreal collage techniques and synthetic sounds derived from digital audio tools 'The Knotted Constellation' allows the listener to lose themselves in the territory and not merely the map of their darkest imagination. With contributions by C. Spencer Yeh (Burning Star Core), Lithuanian sound artist Darius ?iuta and Berlin-based circuit bender Guido Henneb?hl among others. BIO: Kim Cascone has a long history involving electronic music: he received his formal training in electronic music at the Berklee College of Music in the early 1970's, and in 1976 continued his studies with Dana McCurdy at the New School in New York City. In the 1980's, after moving to San Francisco and gaining experience as an audio technician, Cascone worked with David Lynch as Assistant Music Editor on both Twin Peaks and Wild at Heart. Cascone left the film industry in 1991 to concentrate on Silent Records, a label that he founded in 1986, transforming it into the U.S.'s premier electronic music label. At the height of Silent's success, he sold the company in early 1996 to pursue a career as a sound designer and went to work for Thomas Dolby's company Headspace. After a two year stint at Headspace he worked for Staccato Systems as the Director of Content where he oversaw sound design using algorithmic synthesis for video games. Since 2001 Kim has been touring Europe performing, conducting workshops and lecturing on post-digital aesthetics in sound art... Kim has released more than 30 albums of electronic music since 1984 and has recorded/performed with Merzbow, Keith Rowe, Tony Conrad, Scanner, John Tilbury, and Pauline Oliveros among others. Cascone is the founder of the microsound list which focuses on issues concerning post-digital music and laptop performance (http://www.microsound.org) and his writing has been published in Computer Music Journal (MIT Press), Artbyte, Contemporary Music Review, Soundcultures, Parachute Journal, Junk Jet and Geometer. Part of the Brighton Digital Festival, the conference is at Brighton Dome on September 5th 2011 from 10am to 6pm with an after party in Brighton Museum. Update focuses on mobile design and user experience ? putting the human touch at the centre of the digital world. Speakers include Jeremy Keith, Aral Balkan and Seb Lee-Delisle, leading international figures in creative technology, web, user experience and mobile development. There are half hour slots during the after party at Brighton Museum and five minute slots during the conference itself at the Brighton Dome for performers. Spaces in the Dome bar, foyer and museum are available for sculptures and installation work. We?re looking for 3 performers and 3 artists to exhibit. If you?re interested in performing or exhibiting, we?re interested in talking to you; we particularly welcome artists who incorporate elements of mobile technology, human-centred design, or user experience in their work. Unfortunately Update does not have funds to pay artists, but offers the chance to perform and exhibit at these great venues, gain exposure and network with an audience of up to 500 creative developers, influencers and early adopters of new technology. We can offer one ticket per artist or team member plus one guest, and a contribution towards expenses based on your estimates. Please send proposals to Ollie Glass (artists at updateconf.com) by August 15th with a breakdown of your technical requirements, and feel free to email with any other questions. http://updateconf.com/ @updateconf http://www.brightondome.org/ http://is.gd/brighton_museum -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
