Message-ID: Flaming Pines first free net release, Burning Palms, is now available. Here are the details: This is a compilation about a small beach in Sydney, Australia called Burning Palms. Accessible only on foot, It is the home of black cockatoos, many palm trees and a natural figure eight rock pool. Most contributors haven't been there. For them this compilation has been a process of imagination and fantasy, for others it has been one of nostalgia, remembering and forgetting. This compilation is about the process of imbuing a place with meaning, a common theme in ambient music. But rather than aiming to uncover some inner essence of the landscape this compilation looks at how this act can be just as much a work of fiction as one of fact. Tracks by: Broken Chip, Savaran, Kate Carr, Sublamp, All N4tural, Manrico Montero, Adam WIlliams, Darren McClure, Every Bolt Rumbling. Mastering: 12k Burning Palms is a free download, but if you like it please consider donating a small amount to help cover the mastering costs. Aria Rostami is a San Francisco based musician, sound installation artist, and firm score composer. I'd be lying if I said that I was previously familiar with his work, but after listening to Form a few times, I decided to make an effort to find out more. Thankfully this independent release is sponsored by Audiomoves , a digital label and distribution service brought to you by David Newman (aka Autistici), the man behind Audiobulb Records, and as such is easily accessible through its professional seasoned channels. Immediately, during my first listen, I placed Rostami somewhere between the delicate glitch of Ametsub, deep bass rolls of Murcof and melancholic piano progressions of Max Richter. Do any of those make any impact on your psyche? Well, you'll be sure to love Form then! Very cinematic in nature, rhythmic in structure, and digitally precise in its. well. form, the album explores the everyday battle of life - its unstable, unpredictable and fragile nature. Jittery percussion sets the template for ambient layers and piano chords, rising from the past to augment the present. Masterfully produced sounds evoke suppressed memories through haunting melodies, dusty loops, and archived rhythm. On the surface, Form reflects Rostami's "understanding and appreciation for all things coming to an end". But what Rostami maybe fails to notice, is that with this debut, he's off to new beginnings. Easily a contender for our Best of 2011 albums! Watch out for this one! Highly recommended! h ttp://www.audiomoves.com David Newman http://www.audiomoves.com | Audiomoves > Digital audio solutions http://www.audiobulb.com | Audiobulb Records > Exploratory music -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... De paso" sound installation (video) Message-ID: ?In this installation you can encounter two objects that are very familiar: a trolley, like the ones that we use for traveling, and a PET 1.5 liter water bottle that is empty. These objects are removed from their usual purpose and they are basically abandoned or left alone. They have a collision or an accident together. The trolley is sitting on top of the water bottle, crushing it with its handle and moving very slowly back and forth, constantly crushing the water bottle and creating a sound. So it's almost like a conversation between the two, but using their own particular languages. This for me was a good way to be able to encounter these objects once again, but to render them strange, as if I don't know who they are and I have to rethink what they are and what their purpose is. (?) The installation gives an opportunity to encounter these two objects again and then to spend time with them on a different plain because the sound that this collision produces is then amplified and distributed into the space of the Capella MACBA, which is, as most churches, also architecturally designed to amplify and to enhance sound.? *Natascha Sadr Haghighian on ?# 04 Natascha Sadr Haghighian. Creating your own low cost biosensing wearable device for muscle sounds. See an Xth Sense performance at http://vimeo.com/20889787 Xth Sense: http://res.marcodonnarumma.com/projects/xth-sense/ http://marcodonnarumma.com/works/music-for-flesh-ii/ What: The workshop offers an hands-on experience and both theoretical and practical training in gestural control of music and bodily musical performance, deploying the brand-new biosensing technology Xth Sense. Developed by the workshop teacher Marco Donnarumma within a research project at The University of Edinburgh, Xth Sense is a framework for the application of muscle sounds to the biophysical generation and control of music. It consists of a low cost, DIY biosensing wearable device and an Open Source based software for capture, analysis and audio processing of biological sounds of the body (Pure Data-based). Muscle sounds are captured in real time and used both as sonic source material and control values for sound effects, enabling the performer to control music simply with his body and kinetic energy. The Xth Sense biosensor was designed to be easily implemented by anyone, no previous experience in electronics is required. The applications of the Xth Sense technology are manifold: from complex gestural control of samples and audio synthesis, through biophysical generation of music and sounds, to kinetic control of real time digital processing of traditional musical instruments, and more. Described as an experiment in existential string theory, "Raumd?monen" organically twists & morphs it's way combining elements of Ambient, Free Jazz, Electroacoustic & Computer Music. "Raumd?monen" (meaning "Space Demon" in German) is set in a basis that no matter what parallel universe (or dot on the timeline) the same evil will always exist. Just as the weight of Sisyphus' boulder, with every trip up the hill, will always weigh him down. From the crucifixion of Jesus to the Holocaust to the American government to the 'Space Demons' in our not so distant futures, the same evil will always have to be carried and a struggle with it's weight will constantly be felt. Also, exclusive to Enpeg & n5Mailorder purchases, a bonus EP titled "Otto Gross Returns!!!" will be included. A 4-track EP that continues the same vein "Raumd?monen" sets, albeit a little lighter in tone. Firmly rooted in the classic sound of IDM, beautiful melodics float above skittering bleeps and perfectly glitched rhythmics creating a sense of innocence corrupted. A sort of nostalgic futurism; a yesterday's tomorrow. A sound forgotten amongst the banal ocean of dubstep and such. With nods to IDM's greats, Enabl.ed manages to walk that fine balance between the familiar & his own voice delicately grand giving listeners what they've been waiting for for a while now. An awesome IDM album. A welcome addition to Enpeg, "Modules Fail" is an exquisite listen. Video for the song 'arel depiq': http://youtu.be/pQ47bSmZ9bc ------------------------------------------------------------------------------| Artist: Odori Album: Gathering Lines Cat#: EN51 http://enpeg.com/discography.php?catno=51 Odori returns to Enpeg with an EP of cold atmospheres & warm emotions titled "Gathering Lines", a beautiful six song EP rooted in a bed of cinematic pads & strings emphasized with minimal crunchy electronic rhythms. Showing her strength as a composer, Odori carefully crafts a world that feels completely isolated & haunting while at the same time remaining emotionally soulful. From beginning to end, "Gathering Lines" is a perfect soundtrack for bad weather & lonely nights. So SoundFjord is going to organise a gig/event/concert to benefit those that have been affected by the conflagrations, looting and vandalism that took place last weekend. I think an eclectic mix of performances and perhaps even a AV screening or two might be nice, so I'm writing to you all to ask if you might be interested in helping out, either by performing at the event, helping us produce the event, or simply promoting such an event once I've found a suitable venue? Of course, all monies will go towards the fundraiser, so I am looking for volunteers on this occasion! Alternatively, some of you may have merchandise that you are happy to donate, or maybe you can bake sweet and savoury delights that we could sell on to raise funds for the cause. We'd really appreciate that too! :) Do let me know as soon as possible if you are interested in helping out in any way, and around over the next few weeks. And if you know of anyone else who may wish get involved do put them in touch ! An intense week-long series of interventions, field trips, open workshops and evening discussions led by international artists and researchers exploring the Suffolk countryside through the interdisciplinary lens of psychogeophysics, defined as the combining of psychogeographic techniques (methods of wandering) with the study of geophysical traces (geophysical archaeology, the revealing of place). Open events within the week include practical workshops in building simple geophysical measurement devices from recycled materials, the construction of ghost detectors to be tested on the streets of Ipswich and experiments within high voltage photography of rocks and minerals. Fieldtrips will build on discussions and techniques established during these workshops, undertaking studies at specific Suffolk locations of interest (such as Rendlesham forest, Bawdsey Manor, Orford Ness); the measurement and mapping of qualitative psychic, physical and geophysical data. A call is thus issued for psychogeophysickers to join the Summit and to propose activities and ideas which can be explored collectively within this frame. Potential imagined activities and research proposals could cover: UFO conspiracy and the black planet, spectres or ?only the earth?, remote viewing, Zebra, electromagnetic mind control, contemporary geomancy, antennae/transmission and ley-lines, data farming, amateur military industrial complexing, crypto-forestation, earth substrate excitations and emotional response, vectors of memory and future sites of execution, VALIS, strategic underground observatories, cobra mist and noise Please send a short statement of intent to m at 1010.co.uk by 20th August 2011 Support is offered for selected projects. It may refer to "visualized music" in which the visual aspect follows the sound's amplitude, spectrum, pitch, or rhythm, often in the form of light shows or computer animation, while in other instances it may refer to "image sonification" in which the audio is drawn from the image in some fashion. Sometimes visual music describes a non-hierarchical correlation between sound and image, in which both are generated from the same algorithmic process, while in other instances, they are layered without hierarchy or correlation altogether. Both sound and image may be presented live, fixed, or as part of an interactive multimedia installation. Processing, editing, and the addition of subtle mists of guitar and synthesizer lead to a collection of explorations of the interplay of melody, rhythm and silence. Varied in structure and gorgeous in tone, the work balances foreground and void to create a swathe of atmospheric sonic events both tied to and divorced from the mundane process of labor from which the structure of the piece was derived. Sessions can take place in person here in Berlin, or worldwide over Skype, with screen sharing. For beginners, with or without previous programming experience, you will quickly be making your own patches. For intermediate users, I may be able to help with your projects. In any case, we will be working at a pace comfortable for you. If interested, please get in touch to discuss times and prices, at 872204 at chrisjeffs.com. ~ Why use SuperCollider? Musicians use it to have greater control over synthesis and create sounds not possible through other means. Sound engineers or scientists can gain a better understanding of the nature of sound and digital audio. Composers are able to explore the world of algorithmic composition, an area in which SuperCollider excels. And for the curious: to investigate something new and different, and make some cool sounds. With an active and constantly growing community, an MIT book recently released, and a new update on the horizon with greater multi-platform compatibility, there's never been a better time to learn SC. For more info, go to http://supercollider.sourceforge.net/. To outline my experience in this field: I started programming in SuperCollider from 1998, and since 2004 have released 6 EPs and 5 albums created almost entirely with self-made SC systems, in addition to playing many live and DJ sets, often with reactive visuals, using nothing else. In 2010 my application "Particularity" - a standalone SC patch - won joint first prize in the LOMUS open-source music software competition. More recently, I have been making synth and control apps for the iPhone. Many of these projects are detailed on http://chrisjeffs.com and http://cylob.blogspot.com. Deutsche Kassettent?ter. The rise of the German home-recording tape scene #2. Curated by Felix Kubin* Featuring interviews with Alfred Hilsberg and Frank Apunkt Schneider Link: http://bit.ly/oRtfAZ *Summary:* With the foundation of his label ZickZack in 1979, *Alfred Hilsberg* rapidly became a key figure in the booming German independent music scene, and even came to be known as the 'Punkpapst' (punk pope). ZickZack released records by groundbreaking bands such as Die Toedliche Doris, Einst?rzende Neubauten and Palais Schaumburg who would become 'triggers' for the new movement ? just before it was commercialised by the mainstream industry. In his first English radio interview ever, Hilsberg talks about the dawn of the Neue Deutsche Welle (German New Wave), a term that he had introduced to readers of the influential music magazine 'Sounds'. His column 'Neuestes Deutschland' was met by such an enthusiastic response that he was eventually 'attacked by 20, 30, 40 cassettes per day coming in from all areas of Germany'. Hilsberg and his younger colleague *Frank Apunkt Schneider* often use the term energy when they try to describe the anger, angst and dynamism of the Kassettent?ter scene. Schneider, pop theorist and member of the Vienna-based artist group monochrom, regularly contributes essays and articles to the magazines testcard, Zonic and Skug. In his book Als die Welt noch unterging* (When the World Was Still on the Verge of Downfall), an encyclopaedic topology of the German New Wave underground, he sums up the radicality of that music in a nutshell with the phrase 'Die ungerichtete Aggression der befreiten Ger?usche' (the undirected aggression of the freed noises). Never before had there been such a high level of experimentation and playfulness in German pop music. Both Hilsberg and Schneider consider 1980 to mark the start of a new era in which 'the old order was not valid anymore and a new one hadn't yet been found' (Schneider). In this cultural vacuum, under the looming threat of a possible nuclear war and squeezed between opposing ideologies, everything became possible. Arts, music, literature, film and humour had to adapt to the monstrosity of the political momentum. The words of Hilsberg and Schneider are illuminated by fragments of a historic 1983 recording: sitting in their kitchen, the notorious Kassettent?ter* Armin Hofmann, Klaus Schmidbauer and Handke Hesselbach*discuss the current state of the underground tape scene. Their final conclusion is clear and simple: a new movement is necessary. Deutsche Kassettent?ter.
