Volf. The sounds, recorded using self-built oscillators, were designed to influence the sense of hearing and improve the inner ear functions, especially the hearing dynamics in the treatment of dyslexia in young children. Volf's 78rpm are the earliest Danish electronic music and, internationally, one of the first electronic music recorded on disc. There are very few complete collections of the original Volf Acoustic Records 78-plates. in any case this program was dominated by a collage of recordings from central china, where (correct me if i'm wrong) i doubt halloween is much more strongly observed that in estonia. along with that work by *edwin lo*, we got around to many submissions that have been waiting patiently a very long time, both cds and mp3s, including a couple that available as free downloads (*daniel del rio* and *james wyness*). this all began with a /*framework*/ introduction recorded for us, again, by *martin clarke*. now: although martin's intros are always exquisite, and i will continue to air every single one he sends me, it's becoming a bit of a one-man show people! keep them coming martin, but the rest of you, let's go, send me some intros! in a folder of the 5 unused intros i've got waiting for airplay, there is 1, yes *1*, that is /not/ by martin. /and/ he's left a shiny red apple on my desk... again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated /*framework:afield*/ series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! framework tartu mnt 41 63710 ahja polvamaa estonia info at frameworkradio.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *(time / artist / track / album / label)* 00:00 - 05:16 / martin clarke / framework introduction http://www.rockscottage.net 02:50 - 14:52 / edwin lo / /[extract 1]/ / rabbit travelogue: central region / rabbit travelogue edition http://www.rabbit-travelogue.com 06:36 - 12:10 / daniel del rio / sant feliu (resonant hill) / resonant / green field recordings http://www.cimaural.net/danieldelrio, http://greenfieldrecordings.yolasite.com 12:18 - 22:50 / yann novak / /[extract 1]/ / the breeze blowing over us / infrequency http://www.yannnovak.com, http://www.dragonseyerecordings.com/ 13:37 - 23:51 / james wyness / /[extract 1]/ / traquair fair 2003 / table shaker http://www.wyness.org, http://blog.wyness.org 17:36 - 19:47 / daniel del rio / sant feliu (resonant rocks) / resonant / green field recordings http://www.cimaural.net/danieldelrio, http://greenfieldrecordings.yolasite.com 19:25 - 32:33 / jeph jerman / prayer / prayer*tactus / semperflorens http://www.jerman.littleenjoyer.com, http://www.semperflorens.com 25:02 - 30:26 / edwin lo / /[extract 2]/ / rabbit travelogue: central region / rabbit travelogue edition http://www.rabbit-travelogue.com 28:24 - 47:01 / yann novak / /[extract 2]/ / the breeze blowing over us / infrequency http://www.yannnovak.com, http://www.dragonseyerecordings.com/ 31:48 - 33:00 / daniel del rio / turbulence (resonant cab) / resonant / green field recordings http://www.cimaural.net/danieldelrio, http://greenfieldrecordings.yolasite.com 33:24 - 40:44 / james wyness / /[extract 2]/ / traquair fair 2003 / table shaker http://www.wyness.org, http://blog.wyness.org 37:54 - 56:25 / jeph jerman / tactus / prayer*tactus / semperflorens http://www.jerman.littleenjoyer.com, http://www.semperflorens.com 39:11 - 40:52 / daniel del rio / berber women association of argan oil / resonant / green field recordings http://www.cimaural.net/danieldelrio, http://greenfieldrecordings.yolasite.com 55:49 - 57:00 / daniel del rio / ferryboat / resonant / green field recordings http://www.cimaural.net/danieldelrio, http://greenfieldrecordings.yolasite.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ framework intro submissions: 1) take yourself and an audio recorder to a location of your choice 2) record for /AT LEAST/ one minute before you - 3) read aloud the following text: *welcome to framework. framework is a show consecrated to field recording, and its use in composition. field recording, phonography, the art of sound hunting; open your ears and listen!* */[3b) please also feel free to translate this text into your native tongue!] /* 4) continue your recording for /AT LEAST/ two minutes after you have finished speaking 5) post the recording to us on any format, or send us an mp3 thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ drop a note to info at frameworkradio.net to be added to or removed from this mailing list -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In several ancient Egyptian creation myths, Mer-Wer was the body of water from which all life originated. While visiting the Fayoum in May 2010, I intended to make a hydrophone recording of the sound of the Qarun, although I was a novice hydrophonographer with a simple, homemade underwater microphone. Via a series of mishaps, I ended up returning to Cairo with what I thought was a terrible recording. It ended up being exactly the opposite, and I'm now asking artists to remix it, to bring new life to my drowned microphone that died in a lake of creation. Felix Pfeifer will present his work (in progress). His project aims at providing an interface for creating improvized pattern based (dance-) music live in realtime (without loading or saving). He uses the novation launchpad and a selfmade USB-MIDI interface with many knobs and sliders custom-designed for a pd patch hosting the synths LINK Topics: - using the launchpad with Linux - programming the launchpad LEDs in pd - general discussion on (self-made) interfaces - mappings in pd For more information, look up http://puredata.info/community/organization/pd-berlin/pd-berlin-users-group. We also encourage you to take an active part, and put up suggestions for topics you want to talk about / topics you want to be talked about. Please, don?t call to the staff of NK to open the doors. They let us use the space but we have to take care about having the meeting without producing any disturbance to them, and to clean the space after the meeting. We would apreciate if you would send us a small mail to info_at_minitronics.net with your name, Pd experience and interests, so that we know how many people might be coming. Or put your name in the pd-berlin wiki page. We would like to thank the support and willingness of NK in the organization of these events. The tunneling produces waste and the waste needs to be disposed of. In this case sand and shredded rubble are mixed with groundwater in order to be pumped out through steel tubes with a diameter of approximately 80cm. The sounds that are produced in the tubes are object of field recordings that I made at different times and places on site. It was immediately apparent that the continuum of the basic sounds that I used for my compositions already sounded formed in its randomness and diversity. The real surprise though, was that commonplace noises such as flowing water and rippling sand were completely inaudible, instead a steady progression of sophisticated rasping and quiet metal jangling was present. Besides the polymorphism of the basic sounds it was the total artificiality of the signal that interested me, acoustic manifestations of sand and water subject to the conditions of technical and functional canalization. (Asmus Tietchens) Asmus Tietchens lives and works in Hamburg. His focus is on the manipulation of sounds in ways suggested by the material itself. In 1965 he began to experiment with tape machines, concrete sounds and electronic sound generators. After a period of experimental pop music at the beginning 1980, he became more and more influenced by Industrial Music (1982 -1985). Since the mid 1990s his music is characterized by a reductionist aesthetic, often using sine waves, white noise and quiet sounds. Until today more than 50 LP- and CD-releases as well as numerous public performances in Germany and abroad. Collaborations with Thomas K?ner (Kontakt der J?nglinge), Achim Wollscheid, Jon Mueller, Arcane Device, Richard Chartier, Merzbow and many others. 2003 and 2006 awarded with the "Karl-Sczuka-Preis f?r Akustische Kunst" by German public radio station SWR. Guest lecturer for sound studies at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (1989-2010) and the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg (2010). http://www.tietchens.de more info: http://www.1000fussler.com/seiten/releases.html Costa Gr?hn '2+1' 3?CDR, (15:35 min), 100 copies, foto cover 1000f?ssler 016, release date: 27th october 2010 Tracklist: 1. Over the years the maps from aporee have become a popular platform for recorders around the world. Each day new sounds get added. But also from the side of Udo Noll new features get installed. Radio On's Adrian Shephard and Rinus van Alebeek interviewed Udo on the history, present and future of his maps, but also on his activities in his living room/studio aporee, like hosting topmodel. Apart from the interview you will hear contributions by first hour collaborator Henrik Schr?der. Frank Schulte, a regular contributor should be mentioned, Udo's daughter Lola for her recording in Limburg. Of course much more sounds were used. To credit every one is close to impossible, because in this special we also wanted to use and demonstrate the different possibilities of aporee maps: the virtual sound walks in Mexico City, in Montreal and in Cologne, a mix on Berlin's Alexanderplatz, a composition made up from several sounds around the world ( a must hear for vuvuzela lovers! ) and a hop jump mix of sounds from Japan. Enjoy,And remember, next time you look at a map, you don't think of who actually designed it, but where you would like to go. Seminar on sound synthesis informed by analysis data. - led by Stefan Kersten and Wernfried Lackner 19, 20 and 21 November at Hangar, Barcelona. Content-based analysis techniques, i.e. synthesis techniques guided by the acoustical and perceptual properties of the source sound material, have been rapidly gaining ground in the sound and music computing community in the last decade. This workshop acknowledges the importance of these new techniques and aims at helping the participants to experiment with content-based techniques and laying a groundwork for further exploration. We will start by introducing a framework that allows experimentation with content-based analysis and recomposition of sound segments stored in a database with only minimal programming knowledge. The occasional closer look will introduce more involved techniques and concepts such as musical feature extraction, concatenative synthesis and audio mosaicing. The focus will be on showing how various open source tools can be used productively in combination, allowing workflows that are not easily realizable with commercial applications. We will be using our application environment Mescaline, which is based on the programming language Haskell, the sound synthesis environment SuperCollider and the feature extraction tool MeapSoft. Full info and structure: [ http://lullcec.org/?p=1428&lang=en ] Stefan Kersten works as a researcher and sound artist in Barcelona, where he is pursuing a Phd at Pompeu Fabra University?s Music Technology Group. His main research interests are the synthesis and analysis of sound textures and the computational modeling of soundscapes. As a member of the col?lectives Zysk and Dissonoisex, Kersten is interested in the study of human communication strategies and also in the perceptual limits of interactive media. He is the author of the original port of SuperCollider to Linux. [ http://space.k-hornz.de/ ] Wernfried Lackner was born in Austria in 1970 and is currently living in Barcelona. He works a software developer, musician and media artist. His interests include (semi-)autonomous (musical) systems, human interaction and the processing and transformation of data. Like the many complex colours and shadings in a pointillist painting that combine to form an impressionistic image, our playing is often very active and busy, while, in totality, creating a slowly shifting, almost three dimensional texture or soundscape. It could be seen as akin to the optical 3-D pictures that have been popular in the last few years, or the pixels in different resolution of digital photography. Another analogy might be the trio seen as a large quiet organism made up of millions of restless cells all working together to create the whole. In "Radio Music", Jon Leidecker (curator of the series VARIATIONS - http://rwm.macba.cat/en/variations_tag) connects three examples from the history of the potential of the radio receiver as musical instrument, from its early beginnings in the twenties as captured on a comedy record, to formal art experiments in the forties and fifties, to its nostalgic presence in one of the very first song-based pop music collage albums, which heralded the now familiar practice of sampling. Link: http://bit.ly/bkg32l PDF file: http://bit.ly/doEnzf Since 1990, Jon Leidecker has performed appropriative collage music under the pseudonym Wobbly, improvising live with prerecordings to coax the harmonies out of the recorded sounds of individuals from disparate cultures. Previous and ongoing projects include the bands Chopping Channel (with Don Joyce & Peter Conheim of Negativland), Sagan (with Blevin Blectum, Lesser and Ryan Junell), the Freddy McGuire Show (with video artist Anne McGuire) and Amen Seat (with MaryClare Bryztwa), as well as live and studio collaborations with People Like Us, Matmos, Negativland, Thomas Dimuzio, Tim Perkis & Xopher Davidson, Hrvatski, The Tape-beatles, The Evolution Control Committee and Otomo Yoshihide. All the while Valerio was adding at first subtle echo, which would be pitch bent and warped into otherworldly sounds, eventually building with more ad more echo?s getting more and more warped, eventually self-oscillating into its own instrument, and a beautifully chaotic mess of sound?. SEAN BAXTER Sean Baxter (drumkit and percussion) is an Australian improviser who has forged an international reputation as a bold explorer of percussive possibilities both as a soloist and through his work with the acclaimed avant garde trio, Pateras/Baxter/Brown. Focusing on the use of extended techniques applied to the conventional drumkit, he utilises an arsenal of metallic junk and other percussive detritus to expand the sonic palette of the percussion tradition. His performance aesthetic evokes a variety of sonic practices, ranging from extreme metal and punishing noise to free jazz and the Modernist abstraction of the classical avant garde. In addition to Pateras/Baxter/Brown, he performs regularly with the brutal, free-jazz/grindcore quartet, Embers, and in frequent ad hoc collaborative and solo incarnations. As a soloist, his practice ranges from acoustic junk percussion and extended drumkit technique to feedback noise?creating intense sonic abstraction by utilising the natural, acoustic resonance of the drumkit pushed to extremes. He is also a voracious group improviser, and has collaborated with some of the world?s most adventurous musicians, most recently including: Robin Fox, Kusum Normoyle, Kim Myhr, Lloyd Honeybrook, KK Null, Paul Grabowsky, Han Bennink, Peter Brotzmann, John Wiese, Valerio Tricoli, Lucas Abela, Robbie Avenaim, Carolyn Connors and Marco Fusinato. VALERIO TRICOLI His compositions bridge musique concr?te and conceptual forms of sound (i.e. the radical interest in how reality, virtuality, memory relate to each other during the acoustic event): music, as a recorded or as a synthetically-modeled sound, is always hovering between the ?here and now? of the event and the shady domain of memory ? distant but at the same time present, like a d?j??vu experience. Tricoli plays live music with electronic instruments ? most of them analogue ? (reel-to-reel tape recorders, synthesizers, microphones, light effects, ultrasonic speakers), however the structure of the device is ever-changing, seeking multiple relations between the performers, the device and the space in which the event takes place. CLAUDIO ROCCHETTI The work of Claudio Rocchetti is a deep plunge into thick sound, investigating its innermost workings. Using a variety of devices such as turntables, audio cassettes, samplers, radios, and microphones, often incorporating other objects and traditional instruments, Berlin-based Rocchetti builds compelling structures that employ sound as sheer matter, mass, and impact. The tarry, mesmerizing hues that characterize his ?music objects? are grounded in layers of sound detritus. www.equalradio.blogspot.com ANTHEA CADDY Anthea Caddy is a cellist and artist from Melbourne, Australia currently based in Berlin, Germany. Interested in the relationship between recorded sound, spatialisation and instrumental performance, much of Caddy?s work focuses on the incorporation of acoustic, electroacoustic and recorded space within performance and multi-channel installation. In live solo performance she often uses low lighting or complete darkness in either stereo or multi-channel configurations. MAT POGO Born in Rome is a vocalist and graphic artist now resident in Berlin. In the 90?s he was one of the founder members of the Burp Enterprise collective and Jealousy Party, one of the most advanced musical units in Italy, mixing with personal touch soul, improv, avant rock, noise and error music. His solo set features his voice, a microphone and some electronic devices. He developed his own language as a vocalist using his experience as a rock singer, an improvisor and radio artist where music, sounds, anecdotic and narrative elements fuse constantly. Weird processed vocal eruptions, intense screams, occasional words, pitched mouth cavity noises and electronic textures melting together in a very expressive way and often with a delicate sense of humor. Beside Jealousy Party other projects he?s currently involved are Pokemachine (with Anders Hana and Horacio Pollard), Penates (with JD Zazie), B Unit (with JD Zazie and Peter Schlewinski), a duo with Ignaz Schick and DJ collective Sistemi Audiofobici Burp. Very soon available online. Summary The second episode in the series looks at the use of formal systems in the composition and performance of musical works. It explains the diversity of approaches to musical systems using a range of technologies and processes. The episode asks how we might distinguish systems based procedures in music to other musical activities, and makes reference to technological development and implementation, structural complexity, and relationships to other musical traditions. We compare three tape-based approaches to composition that explore sound as a temporal and spatial phenomenon and refer to theoretical positions offered by notable artists working in this field. The album begins with ex-Slowdive drummer Simon Scott, whose 'Orexis' takes on a studious dissection of static and tiny acoustic timbres. From within all this whirring minimalism a backdraft of granular drone rises up and takes the track to its finale. Bluermutt's 'Telephone Library' is a more melodic electronica enterprise, in keeping with Isan's tuneful electroacoustic study 'Isan Ice Later', which beautifully mixes together percussive sounds, crystalline bell tones, xylophone (and very possibly something to do with ice, given the title) plus bowed strings. A similar strategy is adopted by Ian Hawgood and Danny Norbury, whose collaboration yields some arrestingly lovely results, particularly thanks to the addition of Norbury's arcing cello strokes. Bridging a gap between this and the more experimental material is Sawako, whose music is either very experimental electropop or very tuneful microsound, depending on your perspective. Either way, her 'Tide Ride' is a clear-cut album highlight. Richard Chartier and Francisco Lopez fly the flag for the more lowercase end of the experimental music spectrum, fashioning some incredibly detailed, incredibly quiet compositions from the source material, with Chartier's 'Wire.Re' standing out in particular.. http://www.audiobulb.com/albums/AB032/AB032.htm David Newman http://www.audiomoves.com | Audiomoves > Digital audio solutions http://www.audiobulb.com | Audiobulb Records > Exploratory music -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <1855AE2B-367D-4F4B-9BD3-54BF97830C39@gmail.com> Dear People, I am a young sound artist from Belgium, and I'm currently building a new installation called Soundtracks. And to build the installation, I need your help. The idea behind soundtracks is to build an archive of memories of sound. Memories of sounds that were important to you, that struck you or stayed with you. Soundtracks wants to research which kind of sounds get remembered, and how they are remembered. Can we hear those sounds again in our heads, or can we only remember the circumstances of the situation; the outlines, the edges of the sound? And that?s why I would like to ask you to take a moment and try to find your recollection of a sound, a sound that was important to you. And I would want to ask you to write down your memory, on paper. And if you could send that memoy by post to this address: Soundtracks Hopstraat 40 1000 Brussels Belgium More information about the idea and purpose of Soundtracks on this URL: http://versonatura.org/audio/stijn/stijnWsoundtracks.html I'm indebted to you all, thank you in advance. Kind regards, Stijn Demeulenaere Ps: It?s important that the memories are WRITTEN BY HAND, so please, no emails or typed letters. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We also encourage you to take an active part, and put up suggestions for topics you want to talk about / topics you want to be talked about. Doors are open from 20h-20h15. After that they'll be closed, and you will have to call someone from the Pd-meeting to get in. To get a telephone number to call or confirm assistance you can write to jmmmpais _ at _ googlemail.com. A theoretical and practical introduction to working with field recordings. - led by Gilles Aubry During this seminar, we will study the social dimension of sound production and reception, an area that could be described as the politics of sound. From this perspective, the process of selection of both the situation and object of recording is understood as significant and raises questions like what is being recorded, who is documenting it, when is it happening, what is being listened to and what is not. The seminar will provide a basic introduction to field recording practices and techniques, from a perspective that understands this practice in a context between ethnographic research, musical composition and sound art. The practical part, will include recording sessions on locations chosen by the participants. The collected audio material will then be evaluated in group listening and discussion sessions and edited into short compositions, audio essays or installations. Participants need to bring a laptop, their editing software of preference and headphones. Recording devices and microphones will be available, though participants are encouraged to bring their own. Full info and structure: [ http://lullcec.org/?p=1600&lang=en ] Gilles Aubry is a musician and sound artist born in Switzerland in 1973. Resident in Berlin since 2002, he uses field recordings, improvisation, computer programming, sound spatialization technology to create sound installations, CD?s and radio pieces, as well as live performances. Aubry?s work is the result of personal research on the formal, perceptual and anthropological production and reception of sound and deals with aspects such as auditory perception, cultural acoustics, space representation and the history of sound technologies. His works have been published by Winds Measure, Absinthe Records, Creative Sources, Cronica Electronica, Schraum, Conspiracy and Sound Implant. These recordings capture not only their most intimate memories of the locations where they grew up, but also the progress and growth Shanghai has undergone in the past 30 years. The current sounds of Shanghai can be heard behind the dialog and also serve as an audio document for future generations of Shanghainese. All dialogue is in Shanghainese or in their local dialect. In 1978, China began its road to reform. Today we can see its tremendous result- and this is only the beginning. The ?soundwalkers? in this project were born between 1978 and 1985 in the Municipality of Shanghai. As Shanghai matured during these reforms, so did they in their own lives. ?Hidden? within their memories, they reveal small and indirect references to how these locations looked and felt. The city of Shanghai is alive and changes and grows just like any living thing- becoming stronger, more intelligent, and more beautiful. Like sound itself, this project can be experienced and interpreted on many levels. On the surface it may just be a field recording of street sounds in another language, it could be everything I mention here, or something totally different. Whatever you get from these recordings, transcripts, and photos is exclusive only to you and your imagination. I hope that it makes Shanghai less intimidating and familiar to you and that if you do come, you try to experience a more intimate side of Shanghai by following one of these on your own. A book of transcripts and photographs of each walk is available to further enhance your experience and to totally immerse you in each location. With this book, you are able to understand their stories as well as navigate through the routes that were taken on that day. The first edition will be a limited edition print of 200 books. The entire project was recorded, designed, printed, and hand-numbered and packaged in Shanghai, China and is truly a piece of Shanghai in your hands. This project is not another tour guide. It shows the reality of Shanghai through sounds of the city and its people. Through the memories of its inhabitants and the imaginations of others, the city of Shanghai extends to beyond its boundaries to wherever you are. I hope that you enjoy your experience of this project and that one day your imagination leads you here. again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated /*framework:afield*/ series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! framework tartu mnt 41 63710 ahja polvamaa estonia info at frameworkradio.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------ framework intro submissions: 1) take yourself and an audio recorder to a location of your choice 2) record for /AT LEAST/ one minute before you - 3) read aloud the following text: *welcome to framework. framework is a show consecrated to field recording, and its use in composition. field recording, phonography, the art of sound hunting; open your ears and listen!* */[3b) please also feel free to translate this text into your native tongue!] /* 4) continue your recording for /AT LEAST/ two minutes after you have finished speaking 5) post the recording to us on any format, or send us an mp3 thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ drop a note to info at frameworkradio.net to be added to or removed from this mailing list -- ||| http://www.murmerings.com ||| -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In a regular vinyl pressing the most expensive part of the process is the mold that will be used to press the vinyls. It's a one off cost good for several thousand units(I forget how many pressings one can get out of a mold before it degrades). There's also different vinyl weights, colours. Both of these things impact greatly on what the record will be like in the "future", after many many plays. any specific questions don't hesitate as this is a very vast subject. There is no universal rule and output standard in vinyl production. a rule of thumb is if you don't intend on making less than 300-500 units it's not reasonable financially. RUMOURS FROM THE EASTERN UNDERGROUND #1. Estonia. By Felix Kubin Message-ID: PARASOL ELEKTRONICZNY. RUMOURS FROM THE EASTERN UNDERGROUND #1. Estonia. In PARASOL ELEKTRONICZNY. RUMOURS FROM THE EASTERN UNDERGROUND, Felix Kubinleads us on a tour of underground sound production in Eastern Europe. Link: http://bit.ly/hcQo5Q MP3 file: http://bit.ly/b89uKZ Related info: http://bit.ly/dzDQ2f The first episode of the PARASOL ELEKTRONICZNY. RUMOURS FROM THE EASTERN UNDERGROUND series is an exception in two regards. Firstly, as I happened to be on a journey to Tallinn at that time, I conducted the interviews with the artists myself. This task is usually carried out by our umbrella agents. The second unusual feature is its duration. At over 80 minutes, it could almost be considered a double feature. However, television pilot programs are often longer than their follow-ups, and I don?t see any reason why this should not apply to audio features too. Also, the Estonian episode is a good introduction to the vibrancy and variety of the Eastern European underground scene. Each episode of the series features some recurring topics and sections: a new national anthem composed by one of the featured artists, introductions to instruments and favorite sounds, miniature audio diaries offering "a day in the life" impressions, spoken word in the local language, descriptions of some local psychological and economic survival tactics and discussions around the "symptoms of the East". "We don't know if we are East or West. We want to be more like a Scandinavian country", says post-punk diva Kiwa, one of Estonia's most famous underground artists, who still survives on a bare minimum. Indeed, with its small Protestant population and outlandish language, Estonia has much in common with Finland. Still, there is a strong connection to other Eastern European countries, particularly in terms of their shared political history. Artists and musicians like Kiwa, Taavi Tulev and Aivar T?nso have lived through the intense political changes that shook their country: from Russian occupation to independence, democracy, capitalism and a right-wing government. Other artists were too young to witness these changes. The political and economic uncertainties have also led to the emergence of a rich artistic resistance. In their brutal propaganda satire "Choose order", the radical film group ESTO TV comments on the growing nationalism in Estonia. The members of the group weren't afraid to infiltrate political gatherings of the right-wing party, pretending to be their truest and most radical followers. Although artists like Andres L?o and Kiwa laconically assert that there is "no market for contemporary art", Estonia has a blossoming music scene that is full of optimism. As most of the musicians don't have a job, issues concerning crisis and security become irrelevant. Or, as the musician Rainer Jancis put it: "We can lose our lives but we can't lose our jobs."
