Nimalan Yoganathan is the first artist to be funded by Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Quebec's recently established Nunavik Fund for the Arts and Literature program. As a result, he participated in an artist residency in Inukjuak, Nunavik during July and August 2009. He was studying and recording the sonic environment to gain insight into the richness of Inuit culture. This included both natural sounds such as the wind and huskies, as well as cultural sounds including carvers at work, throat singing, and the intricate rhythms of the Inuttitut language. These field recordings serve as the compositional foundation for this radio art piece. Listeners are immersed within evolving cultural portraits of Inukjuak. Field recordings are sometimes complemented by electronic gestures in an attempt to convey the inherent musicality hidden throughout this vast Arctic landscape. Man-made synthesized sounds harmonize with and mimic the timbral and rhythmic properties of Inukjuak's soundscapes, similar to how Inuit throat singing often employs the human body in imitating the songs of geese and mosquitoes. The social and spiritual significance of sounds and how aural cues are used in Inuit cultural practices such as hunting and fishing serve as narratives in this work. As part of his residency, Nimalan also led weekly sound art workshops for youths between age 13 and 16, during which they were taught outdoor field recording techniques. Each youth was given their own digital recorder to document their sound walks around the community. Nimalan has included portions of their field recordings in this installation so as to juxtapose their sonic perceptions with those of his own. All material heard between 7:09 and 13:40 of this piece was recorded by the youths from the workshops. Special thanks to: Tommy, Tukai and Matt (workshop participants), Nunavimmi Pigiuravik School, Avataq Cultural Institute, and Makivik Corporation BIO Nimalan Yoganathan is a Montreal sound artist and musician. He completed his studies in Electrical Engineering at McGill University in 2004 and recently graduated from Concordia University?s Electroacoustic Music program. He currently focuses on the integration of field recordings into his multimedia works from his travels through bustling cities, desolate landscapes, and spiritual sites. In a time when global communities are progressively being plagued by noise pollution, Nimalan believes it is crucial to preserve and accentuate the subtle but musical sounds hidden all around us. Nimalan is also involved with radio production, installation art, and sound design for film, dance, and theatre. He has released experimental Dub and Hip-Hop albums on labels including Le Son 666 and Panospria (No_Type). His works have been disseminated at numerous festivals and venues including MUTEK, Suoni per il Popolo, Pop Montreal, Art?s Birthday, OBORO, and Darling Foundry. again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! framework tartu mnt 41 63710 ahja polvamaa estonia info at frameworkradio.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------ framework intro submissions: 1) take yourself and an audio recorder to a location of your choice 2) record for /AT LEAST/ one minute before you - 3) read aloud the following text: *welcome to framework. framework is a show consecrated to field recording, and its use in composition. field recording, phonography, the art of sound hunting; open your ears and listen!* */[3b) please also feel free to translate this text into your native tongue!] /* 4) continue your recording for /AT LEAST/ two minutes after you have finished speaking 5) post the recording to us on any format, or send us an mp3 thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ drop a note to info at frameworkradio.net to be added to or removed from this mailing list -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Ferocity and immobility, instruments abused and unused, musicians zombiefied in their 'stage persona' and in general the sense of psychosis, of necessary superfluousness that gushes from every gesture, from each decision taken by this anglo-basco duo make their live event an experience that is all but impossible to relate to, at least until they've stripped you of the costuming of dominant culture. " "[sic] Tim Goldie is one of the most original noise musician/performers on the European scene. His double album "ABJECTOR"[sic] is a violent and considered examination of the fragmentation of language, the de-composition of instrumental research and the painful suffering that accompanies it. Far from any current or cultural influence, " "[sic] Tim Goldie's work places itself in a unique conceptual universe, and its cruel voice warbles a mix of agony and ecstasy. Valerio Tricoli, Netmage Festival, Italy 2009 ONE CRUEL VOICE. The agony, the ecstasy: extreme emissions from the human voice box. No instrument conveys as broad a range of emotions - love, tenderness, pain, longing - than the human voice. Towards the periphery of the vocal spectrum, however, where words turn to howls, gibbers and wails, emotional certainties dissolve, and the extremes of human experience flow together: the old pleasure pain dichotomy, right there in the distressed whimper of a vocal chord. " "[sic] Tim Goldie has been on the radar a little while, chiefly through his membership of Deflag Haemorrhage/Haien Kontra, an outfit with Basque sound artist Mattin. His debut album "ABJECTOR" [sic] is one of the most flat-out original noise albums I have heard in some time: a punishing, determinedly outre, excursion into drum improv, digital noise and extreme vocal gymnastics. The first cd recalls the acoustic investigations of Alvin Lucier, extended periods of improvised drumming, credit cards and scraped snare, investigation of the properties of an instrument as crucial as technical skill. The second CD - the heavily titled "Devocalised Fluchtverdachtiger/Blocksperre Refluxur"[sic] brings vocals into the equation: shrieked and wailed, hoarse with emotion, often distorted by crackling static, or by lips pressed against the skin of a snare. The language itself, though, is fractured and mangled, meanings dissolved or hiding latent; a musical counterpart, perhaps, to the aggressive datafeed spew of Kenji Siratori's postmodern novel 'Blood Electric'." The visual output of his current creative practice is often characterised by an architectural quality, inspired by the worlds of engineering and construction, through a cross-disciplinary approach blending drawing, experimental video / animation and computer art. His work has been shown in various festivals and exhibitions nationally and internationally (Iniva, Onedotzero, Mapping, Nemo, Monaco Dance Forum). http://web.mac.com/paul.ramshaw http://music.tvu.ac.uk/index.php/staff-profiles/110-ramshaw-dr-paul.html http://www.soundandmusic.org/node/398 Paul Ramshaw has been making music since the 1970?s in a variety of styles and contexts. His current music comprises recent electro-acoustic compositions using orchestral and operatic acoustic sources. In some cases there are only two sources that are processed and recompiled into many parts, or from few voices into many with ephemeral drones and textures created using micro-samples of melodic and harmonic phrases from the live orchestral and operatic vocal sources. The music is intended to elicit changing emotional contexts and is intended for 'active listening' rather than in the background. Live performances involve two ends of a spectrum: classical opera and electro-acoustic orchestral processing that creates an output of both that overlap and juxtapose elements into what Paul calls 'opera-tronics'. Paul has performed at various music festivals and venues including the Brighton Music Festival, The Million Year Oil Man Festival, and was recently commissioned by Sound and Music to compose for the opening of Kings Place performing arts centre in Kings Cross. Paul also lecturers in Creative and Experimental Sound and writes on music, philosophy and creativity. ---------------------------- ---------------------------- MIKE MCINERNEY & ZLATKO BARACSKAI http://www.macinerney.com/ Mike McInerney plays shakuhachi and piano. He loves making music with machines, but makes his scores by hand. http://www.zlatko.hu/ Zlatko Baracskai was born in Sarajevo (BIH) on 4th of October 1982. He received elementary education in Sarajevo, Subotica (YU) and Budapest (H), secondary education in Budapest and the Hague (NL). At young age he developed interest in music, computers and electronics. Interest in electronics was ever supported and guided by his mother, engineer in energetics. He studied drumming from Tibor Nemes and C++ programming from Tamas Beck since the age of twelve. Eventually he became an autodidact exploring the intersection of these fields until the year 2001, when he was admitted to study Astronomy in Budapest and Electronic Music in The Hague. He moved to The Hague where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Institute of Sonology at the Royal Conservatoire in 2005. During these 4 years his technical and artistic intentions gained attention support and guidance from Clarence Barlow, Joel Ryan, Paul Berg, Konrad Boehmer, Kees Tazelaar, Johan van Kreij, Peter Pabon and Lex van den Broek. After enjoying adventures in constructing tape music, he turned focus to live sound processing and instruction of musicians. His coming to Birmingham to do a PhD with Scott Wilson and Jonty Harrison opened up perspectives in using recorded sound and forcing acoustical events. Most recently he researches perceptual feature extraction and algorithmic rephrasing. ---------------------------- ---------------------------- JOHN WALL & ALEX ROGERS http://www.utterpsalm.com/ fragmentary abstract sound, sound poetry, and manic rantings ---------------------------- ---------------------------- VJ FLICKERING LIGHT http://www.flickeringlight.tv VJ'ing regularly around SE London with, Foul Geese, Goy, Pnevma, DJ. This action will dump a file (in this case a file like "/dev/mem" which is related to the computer memory) towards our sound device "/dev/dsp". It will start then interpreting this input data transforming them into sounds.A raw and 8-bit sound is generated containing its evolutions, dynamic changes, rhythms, silences, textures, etc. Sometimes it sounds like loading old fashioned spectrum cassette games. At this time, I was reading an essay by Simon Yuill about the concepts and the relation between brutalism architecture and computing art science (http://1010.co.uk/code_brut.pdf) This article somehow influenced me at the very beginning of the creative process, but afterwards I decided to work in other directions with these raw materials: cooking them by using mutant mathematics generative processes, iterative and fractal functions applied to granular synthesis parameters. Simultaneously I was also programming all the software (patches) needed in PureData frameworks generating feedback between product and process. At the end by mixing the sound blocks obtained from the transformations explained above, the two tracks of the release were born. (in the multitrack editor "Ardour" linux-audio software ) What fascinates me the most from digital media, is having the possibility to transform whatever you can decode into 0 and 1, and been able to dump it into different shapes and even languages (audio can be turned into image, DNA from a cauliflower into a sonora piece...) I find here a retroflavour of poetic absurd DADA; some kind of situationism deviation, or perhaps a shoot of machine desire connection.... >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>freedownload ++info http://noconventions.mobi/noish/ salut!! -- >>>http://noconventions.mobi/noish -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Thanks to our regular contributors and everybody who responded so quickly. Luckily, all of our family in Haiti are safe, but as you can imagine, the damage to their homes was devastating, forcing the majority of them had to temporarily relocate to Florida, the Dominican Republic or other regions of Haiti where they are sharing housing and other resources. Needless to say, getting our family's lives back to normal requires money for the basics: food, water, clothing, as well as the resources to build new housing. This is why we're dedicating this release's proceeds entirely to the Haiti relief cause. When you download this Pertin-nce release you can make a donation via paypal at account [bleupulp (at) hotmail (dot) com] and please use reference ''pertin-nce_031''. All of these proceeds will go directly to members of our family in need. If you'd rather not give money directly to individuals, we also encourage you to give to an organization of your choice. For more information, look up http://puredata.info/community/organization/pd-berlin/pd-berlin-users-group. We also encourage you to take an active part, and put up suggestions for topics you want to talk about / topics you want to be talked about. Doors are open from 20h-20h15. After that they'll be closed, and you will have to call someone from the Pd-meeting to get in. To get a telephone number to call or confirm assistance you can write to info_at_minitronics.net. Please, don?t call to the staff of NK to open the doors. They let us use the space but we have to take care about having the meeting without producing any disturbance to them, and to clean the space after the meeting. We would apreciate if you would send us a small mail to info_at_minitronics.net with your name, Pd experience and interests, so that we know how many people might be coming. Or put your name in the pd-berlin wiki page. We would like to thank the support and willingness of NK in the organization of these events. The idea was to use one single drum machine as the sole sound source for any given track. The style varies from abstract-experimental to industrial-minimal-techno. Not a lot of melody to be found here, given the sound source limitations, it's a bit more on the experimental side than anything, but it does have some machine grooves at times. I hope you'll go check it out, all three hours (in five parts) are available for free download as 320k zips and in lower bitrate versions. I recommend being non-linear and starting with part two, part three or part five. Part one isn't actually the strongest of the set. Check it out here: http://www.vuzhmusic.com/releases/electretquintet.html There's also a mix I made on my soundcloud page that features a few of the tracks from that project: http://www.soundcloud.com/vuzhmusic yrs, c. reider ... The first electronic instrument, invented in ?20 by Lev Termen. Starting with instrument designs from these articles, www.cs.nmsu.edu/~rth/EMTheremin.pdf we will modify each theremin in a unique way. The built instruments will have the features of a real theremin, with more than 5 octaves and 2 antennas, for volume and pitch control. More Info: http://www.theremin.altervista.org/workshop.html Fees 100 Euros for participation + 55 Euros for parts All parts included except cabinet (see below) - Electronic components, capacitors, resistors, transistors, ics, coils etc - Printed Circuit Board - Connectors, Mechanical parts: screws, spacers, washers, tube rod to build the 2 antennas, etc Those who have access to these items through other means, must submit the parts list for a check before the beginning of the workshop. workshop price minus parts is 100 euro Cabinet The cabinet sizes have the main role in the behaviour of the instrument and its playability. The two antenna (horizontal volume loop on left and vertical pitch rod on right) may be spaced in a range from L= 400 ? 500 mm, to avoid interferences The other two are related to the overall dimensions of electronics and the other devices as antenna connectors etc: must be l 120-140mm X h 40-50mm. Thickness from 10 ? to max 14mm. The cabinet has its cover. All conductive materials are not advisable. Wood (plywood) or MDF (Medium density fiber)are as cheapest as reccomended. We can refinish some holes on the cabinet during the workshop Recycled enclosures, a broken C64, 128 or VIC20, an old tubes radio receiver, will host the electronic of your theremin. Set in motion your imagination and eyes during your walks and visits to flea markets. A complete cabinet ready to be drilled and used, we suggest a box like this, item 520780-62 from Conrad http://www1.conrad.de :sizes are far below only in widht L min, (310mm) but the instrument can still operate properly only with a little modification. You can also build, test your electronic antennas in a mannequin-box, waiting to fit into your cabinet Every participant would bring Soldering iron (L?tkolben) 30w 20-45W max ? 230volt round tip (spitze) of 1.5mm I.E http://www1.conrad.de, items 588552-LN or 588332-LN POWER SUPPLY (WALL WART ADAPTER ? Cultivating an awareness of vocal ability and understanding the process for removing vocal limitations is a useful undertaking for any person. The purpose of this workshop is to help individuals free their voices. Participants will leave the workshop with an enhanced understanding of the expressive capacity of the voice across cultures, and the tools to expand their own voices beyond everyday speaking and singing. in this workshop we will explore the voice as an instrument of the body and soul. Participants will receive instruction in extended techniques used by contemporary musicians and sound poets, while gaining awareness of multiphonics as practiced in a number of traditional and non-traditional settings, with particular emphasis on Tuvan throat singing. Instruction in these enriching techniques will be accompanied by discussion of aesthetic concerns related to the musical cultures covered. The workshop will be limited to 12 students, so that each participant may have the opportunity to perform for each other in an intimate, supportive environment. This workshop is excellent for those working in interdiscliplinary fields, with interest areas in music, dance, theater, poetry, visual arts, healing sound, and ethnomusicology. Arrington de Dionyso uses performance as a vehicle for driving through the nameless territories held between surrealist automatism, shamanic seance, and the folk imagery of rock and roll. Arrington performs on the bass clarinet, jaw harps, and his voice with a distinctly multiphonic ability inspired by Tuvan throatsinging and the ecclesiastics of Albert Ayler and Don Van Vliet. Pushing the envelope between musicality and pure energy, between shamanic ecstacy and lunacy, he enwraps rooms with resonant sound . He tours constantly, and has performed or/and recorded with notable improvisers throughout the U.S.A., Canada, Italy, France, Israel and Japan. He presents workshops on improvising with the voice in conjunction with his travels around the world. Date: 30th march 2010 (1Day) Place: NK Elsenstr. 52 2HH 2 Etage 12059 Berlin http://www.nkprojekt.de/ Time: 17:00 to 20:00 Participation is limited to 12 participants Registration: Preregistration is required and can be done by sending an email to enka_nk at gmx.de Fee: 30 Euros Some Testimonials from Workshop Participants- ?Arrington de Dionyso is a comfortable and patient teacher. He allows you to explore the more honest and primal parts of your voice and being. I would recommend this workshop to anyone who has a desire to step further into their own skin. As a performer and as a human being I have found this to be a raw, melting, educational, palateable and inspiring experience.? ?An eye opening, self reflective, healing and challenging experience I will never forget. Thank you for this experience and your knowledge. Very supportive, open learning enviroment. I even learned how to breathe all over again. Great teacher!? ?Very inspiring, liberating, and encouraging to come to a group and feel a comfortable vulnerability, not only from the participants but the facilitator as well.? ?-smooth and natural progression and transitions, eventually into the depths of personal expression and ground breaking exploration. -even if one has done this kind of thing before, there will be further opening, learning and appreciation of the mysteries contained within the human voice in all its diverse and extreme variance.? ?Arrington brings a reverence for vocal expression that is contagious, to share the company of and learn from someone who has an inherant awe for anything that could come out of us, is encouraging and humbling simultaneously.? -- GRATIS f?r alle GMX-Mitglieder: Die maxdome Movie-FLAT! The location is in the old art college building on George's Quay, once used for the fashion and sculpture departments. I began the process by simply going into the room and listening. A process of recording, measurement, interpretation, processing and composition resulted in "The Lights In Room 7". The process has produced a space augmented by the attention I have paid it. Those who come to the room will hear sounds that differ for each visit, but which all share in common the source described in the title. The exhibition opens this Friday 12 March at 7pm with a ceremony at LSAD Gallery, Limerick School of Art & Design, Clare Street. It runs for 10 weeks, until Sunday 23 May, at many venues across Limerick, Ireland. These include The Hunt Museum, Limerick County Hall, Thomond Park Stadium and the Absolute Hotel. A total of 58 artists are included. Those are some sounds that constitute the atmosphere of The Silent Watcher. Presented in their raw form or heavily processed, they all relate to old memories, often blurred and incomplete; the aural equivalent of a faded polaroid. From field recordings, layers are created, manipulated, taken apart and rebuilt and soon begin to tell a story - a story often buried under droney textures and fragmented melodies and only partially revealed, but more often distorted and reconstructed. This album has been made over a period of two years, a time period in which the process has slowly taken shape and mutated, often leading to beautiful accidents and unexpected results patiently collated and recycled. It is also the story of a work in progress and a craft being learned, where many compositional methods have been explored. ROEL MEELKOP 'Grey Mass / Grey Matter' 2 x 3?CDR, (2 x 21:20 min), 100 copies / DIN A5 cardboard cover, one CDR on each side. 1000f?ssler 014, release date: February 2010 Tracklist: grey mass 4?09 grey mass 3?56 grey mass 13?13 grey matter 8?34 grey matter 4?48 grey matter 7?56 The tracks on 'grey mass / grey matter' have come together in a very satisfying way. They were all concieved as single tracks except one and were composed with quite some time intervals inbetween. Now they converge on this release as if they have always belonged together. In a sense that is certainly the case, because the essence of these tracks lies in their concrete origins: all sound material is based on recorded sounds. No electronic sounds whatsoever were added. As if in some mysterious way this can be percieved and it should indeed be noted. Or maybe it should just be enjoyed?. (Roel Meelkop, 2010) Roel Meelkop (1963) studied visual arts and art theory at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. During a post-graduate course at the same academy he decided to dedicate his work to sound and music. His musical activities date back to the early eighties when he started THU20, together with Jac van Bussel, Peter Duimelinks, Jos Smolders and Guido Doesborg. THU20 have released several tapes and CD?s and performed regularly in Europe. His other activities include working with Kapotte Muziek and GOEM and organising sound events, mostly in Rotterdam. Aside from releases, Meelkop also creates site-specific sound installations and performance pieces in collaboration with other artists. http://www.r0m.nl more info: http://www.1000fussler.com/seiten/releases.html please listen: http://www.1000fussler.com/music/grey_matter1_excerpt.mp3 please listen: http://www.1000fussler.com/music/grey_mass3_excerpt.mp3 NEW !!!! BIRGIT ULHER + GREGORY B?TTNER 'Tehricks' 3?CDR, (19:38 min), 100 copies, foto cover 1000f?ssler 015, release date: February 2010 Birgit Ulher: trumpet, speakers, mutes / Gregory B?ttner: computer Tracklist: Tehr: 7?33 Eri: 5?36 Rix: 6?01 Gregory B?ttner plays sounds from a computer through various small speakers, which Birgit Ulher uses as mutes for her trumpet. This way the trumpet sounds and the electroacoustic sounds are modulated by the acoustic resonance chamber of the trumpet. The trumpet is simultaneously a transmitter and a receiver. Birgit Ulher studied the visual arts, which still has an important influence on her music. Since the early eighties she has been involved in free improvisation and experimental music.Since then she has ?established a distinguished grammar of sounds beyond the open trumpet sound ? (jazzdimensions.de). Her work includes solo-performances, as well as dance-projects, beside her working-groups she plays often in occasional / once only groupings and collaborates with improvisers all over Europe and USA. Current projects include the solo project ?Radio Silence No More?, duos with Ute Wassermann, Gino Robair, Damon Smith, Heiner Metzger, Gregory B?ttner, Nordzucker (with Lars Scherzberg and Michael Maierhof) and the trio with Lou Mallozzi and Michael Zerang. http://www.birgit-ulher.de http://www.myspace.com/birgitulher Gregory B?ttner studied communication design in Hamburg, with a specialization in audiovisual work. Since 2000 he got his focus on soundart and electroacoustic compositions. In 2004 he launched his label 1000fussler which releases experimental music in small editions. In 2001 he founded his duo f?r diesen abend together with Stefan Funck and often accompanied by visuals from Katrin Bethge (overhead-projections). He works together with artists like Rhodri Davies, Birgit Ulher, Chris Heenan, et al.. His music released by labels like 1000f?ssler, Firework Edition, Anthropometrics/Aufabwegen, Gr?nrekorder, Compost and Height. http://www.gregorybuettner.de http://www.myspace.com/gregorybuettner more info: http://www.1000fussler.com/seiten/releases.html please listen: http://www.1000fussler.com/music/Tehr_excerpt.mp3 please listen: http://www.1000fussler.com/music/Eri_excerpt.mp3 NEW !!!! Welcome to "these are a few of my favorite things". As mentioned in earlier installments, my interpretation of field recording based works, is very broad however, the thread I like to follow is to find artists who have mastered their unique identity through the music of sound. This is the 2nd part of "my favorite things" devoted to nvo. The label is nvo, non visual objects, was founded in 2005 by Heribert Friedl and Raphael Moser. In 2007, nvo released : Extract, Portraits of Soundartists, a book and 2 cd's. The next hour will be devoted to the 2nd cd's issued as well as excerpts from the book. from the introduction: /"Since we started the label Nonvisualobjects two years ago, many collaborations with artists worldwide have arisen, a large, growing network has evolved and an extensive body of work has been formed that we would like to explore and try to sum up. The book developed from the idea of presenting an extract of artists involved in the current experimental electro-acoustic music scene, often following a rather reduced approach in their work. We would like to present artists that work in different areas in this field of electro-acoustic music, to cover a large spectrum even in this quite specific area. With essays, interviews, photos, drawings and other materials presented in this book, we try to look at the motivation and intention behind the sound production from different perspectives, to possibly allow for a new/extended approach to this form of music. Many of the artists involved in this project do not exclusively work with sound, but also in other artistic disciplines. In this book we would like to present these other sides of their work to allow crossreferences/crosslinks to open up new aspects of the music. The chapters consist of collage-like contributions. Images and text should not necessarily be regarded as complete units, but are open to various possibilites of interpretation. It was not our intention to present a discourse in theories of art and music. It was also not our wish to present a curated work on a specific topic. Instead we wanted to show very personal portraits created by the artists themselves, which describe their way of working, the methodology of their sound production and which also portray the artist?s physical and not only their intellectual environment ? where one lives, things of everyday life, things of interest and inspiration. In the fast moving times of the digital era, it was also our wish to, at least partly, hold on to an analogue medium. Should the inevitable decay of digitally stored media ever lead to the disappearance of much of contemporary art and culture, the possibility to refer to this book would still remain."/ Heribert Friedl, Raphael Moser (http://www.nonvisualobjects.com) again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! framework tartu mnt 41 63710 ahja polvamaa estonia info at frameworkradio.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *(track / artist / website)* 1. An exhibit and radio narrowcast will occur at Cabinet?s gallery space March 17-19, with a closing reception and performances on Friday, March 19 from 6-9pm. The program is collaboratively organized by Penny Duff (exhibit), Gabrielle Herbst (performances), and Maria Papadomanolaki (radio) as part of Cabinet's Intern Initiative Program and is sponsored in part by free103point9. Cabinet is located at 300 Nevins Street between Union and Sackett Streets in Gowanus, Brooklyn. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 12?6pm, and by appointment. With World Tuberculosis Day marked every year on March 24, advocates and supporters in the fight against TB are preparing to raise awareness on the disease. Among the most unusual events is "ToBe Continued..." which will take place in Topol?, Italy. To Be Continued - or TBC (which in Italian is the abbreviation for tuberculosis) - will be a unique sound experience - an original concert that will last a full 24 hours starting at midnight and ending at midnight on the following day, and therefore covering the entire March 24 World TB Day. During this un-interrupted 24 hour marathon, invited musicians from all over the world will contribute music (streamed through a web-site that anyone can access http://www.stazioneditopolo.it) and mark the day with sounds and musical pieces. Every musician, from all four corners of the world, will have at his/her disposal a 30 minute window, and thus create a relay of sounds and rhythms. The music featured will be varied, from classical music to the Jewish-influenced klezmer, from ambient to experimental sounds, from jazz to ethnic music - all un-interrupted for 24 hours. The initiative is coordinated by Antonio Della Marina, a contemporary musician and computer music composer, and by Moreno Miorelli, artistic director of the annual gathering "Stazione di Topol?/Postaja Topolove". The concert is under the aegis of the Global Health Incubator, the 'laboratory' established in July last year in Topolo'/Topolove within the 'Stazione' event, to create links between the worlds of creativity and science. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ::: tartu helikoosolek, tartu, estonia ::: march will see the first meeting of the newly established tartu helikooselek (tartu soundgathering) near here in estonia's 2nd largest city. the helikooselek will happen on the last wednesday of each month, from 6-8pm at the eesti rahva muuseum (estonian national museum). this first meeting will include a basic introduction to the ideas behind the gathering, a presentation by visiting australian artists felicity mangan and anthea caddy, and a presentation from me on the revenant:sound project. tartu helikoosolek 1st edition wednesday, march 31st 6pm eesti rahva muuseum a few days later felicity, anthea and i have also been invited to play live alongside local artists kiwa and sven vabar. that's on saturday, april 3rd, at genialistide klubi. if you happen to be in town, please drop in to both and say hello! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ::: and furthermore ::: the framework250 compilations have proved a great success, but i still have plenty left, so if you've been considering picking one up and showing your support for framework and it's continued programming, get in touch! further info here: http://www.frameworkradio.net/framework250 other upcoming activites: short workshop during the mooste folk festival (http://folkfest.polvamaa.ee) in late april. participation in slovenian artist petra kap?' Bringing together early works, Detached Metal Voice is characterised by an abstract narrative exploring the anxiety of disconnected elements striving to find connection in a world of digital communication. AT&T voiceovers provide threads of psychological association, rhythmic neo-classical arrangements and noise electronic jazz improvisations provide the backdrop. Many experimental techniques are in place within the creative process of these tracks. Laboratory sinewave oscillators sweep through many of the tracks, tones are produced from simple homemade synthesisers. There is a homage to voice synthesis including excerpts taken from many of the early laboratory attempts to produce the human voice through the mode of synthesis, including work pioneered by Philip Rubin from the Haskins Laboratories, Tom Baer, and Paul Mermelstein. This synthesizer, known as ASY, was based on vocal tract models developed at Bell Laboratories in the 1960s and 1970s by Paul Mermelstein, Cecil Coker, and colleagues. In tracks such as "Babyman" Autistici illustrates a fascination in hearing machines talking about emotive subjects, emulating emotive tonal changes and yet having no real connection to the subjective emotional experience. Alternatively tracks such as "Whispering Mongo Man" contains a 15 minute interview with John Lennon with all the words spoken by John deleted from the sound file.. Leaving only the intake and exhalation of breath. With the content missing we are left with a sense of emotion contained within the spaces - the working of a man's body. The tracks encourage the listener to consider the complex question of how meaning, relationships and connections are constructed, communicated and perceived. Pierre Gerard - Wooden Mouldings For The Assembly (to Constantin Brancusi) 2. Shinkei - Untitled Dragon's Eye Recordings is pleased to present Static Forms by Pierre Gerard and Shinkei. In lieu of a traditional album description, the artists and Dragon?s Eye Recordings offer the following quotations. "The silence that I manufacture, hears only my ears. like these lengthened forms, often." ? Pierre Gerard "Le silence, c'est la meilleure production qu'on puisse faire, parce qu'il se propage : on ne le signe pas et tout le monde en profite." ? Marcel Duchamp "On peut voir celui qui regarde, mais on ne peut pas entendre celui qui ?coute." - Marcel Duchamp ?...But now there are silences and the words make help make the silences. I have nothing to say and I am saying it and that is poetry, as i need it. We need not fear the silences, we may love them.? ? John Cage (from Lecture On Nothing) ?Music already enjoys inaudibility.? ? John Cage (from Satie Lecture) ??For it is the space and emptiness that is finally urgently necessary at this point in history (not the sounds that happen in it - or their relationships) (not the stones - thinking of a Japanese stone garden - or their relationships but the emptiness of the sand which needs the stones anywhere in the space in order to be empty). When I said recently in Darmstadt that one could write music by observing the imperfections in the paper upon which one was writing, a student who did not understand because he was full of musical ideas asked, 'Would one piece of paper be better than another: one for instance that had more imperfections?' He was attached to sounds and because of his attachment could not let sounds be just sounds. He needed to attach himself to the emptiness, to the silence. Then things - sounds, that is - would come into being of themselves. Why is this so necessary that sounds should be just sounds? There are many ways of saying why. One is this: In order that each sound may become the Buddha.? ? John Cage (from Silence) ---------- Shinkei / Mise_en_Scene | Leftover_1 de2712 | 21:00 | 3" CD-R | 150 1. Leftover_1 Leftover_1 is the first in what promises to become a beautiful series of generative works by artists Shinkei and mise_en_scene. Leftover_1 is born out of the residue unused parts of their Scytale collaboration released on mAtter (JP). As part of the process during the composition, small parts of the work were not included in the CD and were "cut out," the artists decided to expand these "leftovers" into a single new work. Curiously, the artist also edited out ofLeftover_1 as well, so the process will continue on with a further reworking. ---------- Yann Novak | Nightfall SR_002 | 19:20 | 3" CD-R + unique watercolor | 40 1. Nightfall Nightfall was created at the Jentel Artist Residency outside Banner, WY in February 2010. Based upon a simple field recording of the start of a snowfall at dusk, the composition explores the shifting point between day and night in the dry and overcast winter month. The original recording begins with the dry, empty silence of the landscape, slowly enveloped by the piling of snow upon the microphone?s windscreen. Each copy of Nightfall is accompanied by a unique watercolor based on the cover photograph of the landscape taken at dusk through the studio window. Participants must gather weather data for the area they live in for a particular day such as: rain/snow fall humidity dam levels wind speed max temperature height of high tide water temperature pollution levels Then convert these figures into frequencies, in whatever way you choose, for use in a sound piece. The only other requirement for the piece is that you include a sample from a song which contains the word 'water' in either its title or lyrics. Any other sounds are up to you.
