Modular collaboration enacts non-hierarchical and decentralized forms of organization that question the concept of the single composing genius. In development since 2006, Modular Collaboration draws inspiration from works with open scores, group improvisation and the practices of relational aesthetics? emphasis of process, performativity, openness, social contexts, transitivity and the production of dialogue over the closure of traditional modernist objecthood, visuality and hyper- individualism . The workshop will begin with the development of a theoretical theme/question. Each participant will then refer to that theme in composing her/his own module. Individual modules will have a unique internal logic in approaching the general theme. In the process of the development the participants give each other feedback to help each find her/his position in the overall system. Workshop dates: July 26th - 30th 2010, with a performance/presentation on July 30th Location: Diapason, 882 Third Ave, Brooklyn, NY Deadline for submission: July 10th 2010 Please send submissions with a short bio and a work sample to: neumann at alulatonserien dot de The workshop is free of charge! ______________________________________________ Diapason is a listening space that gives artists and audiences the opportunity to make and experience sound art. Bischoff will perform three recent pieces that project sound into a framed space where details are highlighted and recycled as a context for further contemplation. JOHN BISCHOFF (b. 1949, San Francisco) has been active in the experimental music scene in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 30 years as a composer, performer, and teacher. He is known for his solo constructions in real-time computer synthesis and the pioneering development of computer network music. His performances around the US include NEW MUSIC AMERICA festivals in 1981 (SF) and 1989 (NYC), Lampo (Chicago), and the Beyond Music Festival (LA). He has performed numerous times in Europe at such venues as the Festival d?Automne in Paris, Akademie der K?nst in Berlin, Fylkingen in Stockholm, and Tesla in Berlin. He was a founding member of the League of Automatic Music Composers (1978) and he co-authored an article on the League?s music that appears in ?Foundations of Computer Music? (MIT Press 1985). He is also a founding member of the network band The Hub that released a 3-CD set of their work in 2007 titled ?Boundary Layer? on Tzadik. In 1999 he received an award from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts (NYC) in recognition of his music. Recordings of his work are available on Artifact, 23Five, Tzadik, and Lovely Music. KENNETH ATCHLEY (b. 1954, Lebanon, TN) is a San Francisco Bay Area sound, video, and installation artist who fashions and performs works ranging from pure-tone and noise hymns to distortion-studded, electro-acoustic devotionals. Much of his work from 1997 to 2005 included the use of fountains and his current presentations continue to be informed by that work and study. Atchley?s performances and works have been featured in venues and festivals including Alternating the Medium (SF), San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, The Kitchen (NYC), T.U.B.E (Munich), CEAIT (Redcat, Los Angeles), Echo De Pensees (CCA, SF), Bang On A Can (NYC), CageFest (SF), Rachel Hafferkamp (Cologne). Atchley?s CD of solo, electro-acoustic-noise works Fountains was released by Auscultare Research. His duet Sealed Cantus with John Bischoff has been released on Bischoff?s 23Five CD Aperture. An interpretive score for 14251 was included in SoundVisions (published by PFAU Neue Musik, Germany, 2005). The libretto of his opera Edision?s Last Project(ION) and lyrics to the choral work Lumiere de Main were published in the book the guests go in to supper (Burning Books, USA). His article, ?An Introduction to the Operatic Works of K. Atchley Including an In-Depth Discussion of an Original Opera Titled Don Giovanni,? published in the Leonardo Music Journal. A profile of his work appeared in the June, 2005 issue of The Wire (#256). ============= www.katch.com Promo information: http://www.johnbischoff.com/KAJB_promo Golden Fur is a trio comprising Samuel Dunscombe (clarinet/laptop) Judith Hamann (violoncello) and James Rushford (keyboard/viola). Golden Fur has quickly made a name for itself as a vibrant new ensemble that fearlessly crosses musical boundaries to create compelling and complex, yet inclusive, performance experiences. The trio recently completed their 2008/2009 debut concert series, commissioning and premiering works by Australian composers Anthony Pateras, Marco Fusinato, Alexander Garsden and Kate Neal. The series also featured world premieres of works by Jaap Blonk and Phill, as well as Australian premieres of works by Klaus Lang, Thomas Meadowcroft, Sam Hayden, Alvin Lucier and Jani Christou. In 2010, they will give Australian premieres of works by Iancu Dumitrescu, and Ana-Maria Avram, and world premieres of works by Cat Hope, David Chisholm, Robert Ashley and Natasha Anderson. Their improvised performances with strings and MaxMSP live-signal processing, embrace a surprising fluidity of languages, drawn as much from the contemporary classical, as from the experimental, concr?te and avant-garde musical realms. Golden Fur has collaborated with performers such as Anthony Pateras, Deb Kayser (Elision), Erkki Veltheim (Australian Chamber Orchestra, Elision), Scott Tinkler (Australian Art Orchestra) and Thembi Soddell. Its members have previously performed for the Melbourne International Arts Festival (2006, 2007, 2008), Chamber Music Australia, Melbourne International Film Festival (a collaboration with David Shea), New Music Network (Sydney), The Melbourne International Biennale of Exploratory Music, and the What Is Music? Festival. Golden Fur has also performed and recorded works by Helmut Lachenmann, Sofia Gubaidulina, Morton Feldman, Luciano Berio, Giacinto Scelsi, Liza Lim, Olivier Messiaen, Anestis Logothetis, Salvatore Sciarrino, Iannis Xenakis, to name but a few. -- NK PROJEKT http://www.nkprojekt.de/ Elsenstr. 52/ 2.Hinterhaus Etage 2 12059 Berlin Neuk?lln 0049(0)17620626385 JULIAN PERCY http://www.myspace.com/ratbag_ http://virb.com/lastdominionlost http://www.myspace.com/todesgeistprojekt GRATIS f?r alle GMX-Mitglieder: Die maxdome Movie-FLAT! Zepelim - Melanie Velarde Message-ID: Hi, This week Zepelim invited the sound artist Melanie Velarde, to create a radio piece (36:22''). Her podcast for Radio Zepelim is a small selection of multiple cassette tape recordings consisting of musical fragments and field recordings, taped across locations in Berlin and Melbourne (Australia). The second part of the show was created from an improvisation based on the players available on Melanie's website (www.melanievelarde.com). *"Melanie Velarde's practice comprises sound, improvisation, field recordings, found objects, and the site specific residues of physical and emotional environments. She uses methods that constitute an aleatorical process across geographic, physical and emotional boarders. Her compositional approach is informed by the participating object and sound?s location and heritage, bringing time and place as modulating elements into play. Interested in the spatial and semiotic properties of accidental and found sounds, she uses field recordings and low fi recording methods to produce sonic textures that can be experienced within a defined space usually in form of documentation, installation and improvisation?"* http://zeppelinruc.wordpress.com/2010/06/03/zepelim-02-06-2010-melanie-velarde/ best wishes, zepelim www.ruc.fm -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Welcome to "these are a few of my favorite things". As mentioned in earlier installments, my interpretation of field recording based works is very broad, however the thread I like to follow is to find artists who have mastered their unique identity through the music of sound. The next 2 editions of 'my favorite things' will focus on a festival that has taken place in Winnipeg, Canada for the last 10 years. Winnipeg is basically in the middle of the Canada, a region commonly referred to as the prairies, it is vast and flat. Don't be fooled, a Winnipeg audience is knowledgeable and discerning. I had the privilege to play twice at this festival and it remains at the top of my list! This is directly linked to the people I came in contact with while i was there. They are, Steve Bates, Jake Moore, Deanna Radford, Don Bargenda, and the festival is Send and Receive. In the fall of 2009, S+R issued a dvd of the last 10 years, there is almost 11 hours of audio on it, what follows are excerpts of those live performances. for more information see http://www.sendandreceive.org. again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! framework tartu mnt 41 63710 ahja polvamaa estonia info at frameworkradio.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *(year / artist / website)* 01. 1998 / David Grubb / - 02. 1999 / Lee Ranaldo + Dean Roberts / - 03. 2000 / Martin T?treault / http://actuellecd.com/en/bio/tetreault_ma 04. 2000 / Oval / - 05. 2001 / Cindy / http://actuellecd.com/en/bio/stonge_al 06. 2002 / Tomas Jirku / - 07. 2002 / Michael Dumontier / - 08. 2003 / Tim Hecker / http://www.sunblind.net 09. 2003 / my kingdom for a lullaby / - 10. 2004 / Taylor Deupree / http://www.12k.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ framework intro submissions: 1) take yourself and an audio recorder to a location of your choice 2) record for /AT LEAST/ one minute before you - 3) read aloud the following text: *welcome to framework. framework is a show consecrated to field recording, and its use in composition. field recording, phonography, the art of sound hunting; open your ears and listen!* */[3b) please also feel free to translate this text into your native tongue!] /* 4) continue your recording for /AT LEAST/ two minutes after you have finished speaking 5) post the recording to us on any format, or send us an mp3 thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ drop a note to info at frameworkradio.net to be added to or removed from this mailing list -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: >>>Please forward to anyone you think may be interested... A10Lab presents a 5 Day Pure Data Workshop lead by Luca Carrubba and Oscar Martin. CRAZY GENERATIVE A/V MACHINES!!!! The aim of this workshop is to learn simple programming strategies for the creation of audio/video software tools for live performances. Generative or interactive pieces of software that let artists create and control video streams and audio processing in real time. During the workshop we will use puredata, a free (as a bird and as a beer) graphical programming language particularly focused on the processing of audio and video data in real time. Puredata is a tool for artists who want to experiment with a different creation pattern, with a freedom to build from scratch their own instruments. You don?t need to be a programmer to begin to build your tool. In 5 the days long workshop you will learn the basics of the language, how to manipulate or create a video and how to play with audio. At the end of the workshop all the participants will take part in a performance event open to the public. >From Monday 21st June to Friday 25th June 2010. 3 hours a day. 7pm - 10pm. Saturday 26th June --- Live performance event with invited performers and all participants from the workshop!!! Book now! Participation is ?100 and limited to 20 people. Formed between institutional and underground medialabs in Barcelona and Madrid, he focus its production on the interaction between audio and video, always share the practices and codes. Based its action on certain keywords like DIY (do it yourself), knowledge sharing, accessibility, recycling and social movements. Also participated in many workshops to spread free software/technology/culture among Italy, Spain, England, Germany, France, Argentina, Brazil, Palestine and China. He is now professor of new technologies for art in Libera Accademia delle Belle Arti, Brescia, Italy. That is where he came into contact with sound art through Leopoldo Amigo y Bartolom? Ferrando. A sound explorer, he bases his work on the deconstruction of field recordings and the creative use of technology errors. Luthier-digital with a ?pure data? environment, which he uses to develop his own experimental tools for processing and real time algorithmic-generative composition. He can be placed somewhere between Computer Music, the Aesthetics of Error, and generative Noise. He seeks the creation of virtual sound universes, imaginary soundscapes that encourage active listening and a different sensibility toward the perception of sound phenomena. He works under the open source paradigm. The kit will ONLY be available through attending the workshop, it is not sold separately. The Benjolin DIY-kit will be easy enough to build even for a beginner in electronics. After successfully building the instrument, which is guaranteed with the help of Rob and Joker, the workshop participants will take home a versatile and very unique analog synthesizer that can influence the behavior of other voltage-controlled modules through seven different control-voltages. It is also able to receive control-voltages for filter-frequency and both of its oscillators. The Benjolin is a ?noise box? that is ?bent by design?, meaning that it always has a definite amount of unpredictability while it is still intuitive to play. The Benjolin features two eighteen-octave range voltage controlled oscillators that drive a ?rungler? circuit, circuitry that in essence uses a special interference technique feeding back into the oscillators to force them into wild chaotic behaviour. A special slightly chaotic filter is both excited and modulated by the signals from the rungler circuitry processes, producing sounds between fat drones to grungy noise havoc. The kit is somewhat more challenging to build compared to the Zeitgeist, but with a little patience and accuracy a beginner in DIY can definitely build it successfully. http://web.me.com/klangbureau/DIY/Workshop.html Rob Hordijk (The Hague, Netherlands) Originally a sculptor and jewelry designer, Rob has established himself over the years as an expert in sound synthesis techniques. In the last couple of years he specializes in hand-build analog electronic instruments that have distinct sonic signatures, instruments that are somewhere between musical instruments and objets d?art. His instruments are used in live performances by a number of established improvisers all over the planet. An example of an instrument designed by Rob is the Blippoo Box, featured in the upcoming 19th issue of Leonardo Music Journal. Rob has been teaching, lecturing and conducting workshops since 1983 at a number of institutes in The Netherlands, and occasionally in other places on this planet. Joker Nies (Cologne, Germany) He is a musician, sound-designer, sound-engineer, photographer and technical editor for the German Sound&Recording and Keyboards magazines. Recent activities include software synth-design in MAX/MSP for the German Keyboards magazine, and production and sound design for radio-plays for the German WDR radio-broadcast. Joker Nies is known for his energetic improvisations on unusual electronic instruments and re-built electronic toys all over Europe and the US. He has played with many established improvisers and is a.o. part of the trio Die Schrauber. Joker is a leading expert in circuit bending and has conducted many inspiring circuit-bending and DIY workshops in the whole of Europe and the USA. When I saw this it looked fragile, gentle and ethereal. For a band to come from Portugal and offer something so refreshingly textured is a delight. Bruno Pereira Pinto is a name I'd never come across, but I certainly know of him now thanks to Sheffield's Audiobulb record label. The term ambient has become a somewhat dirty genre, swamped by talentless tunesmiths trying to make a fast buck. :papercutz have bucked the expectation with a simply dreamlike album that takes you away with it. There are obvious comparisons to be made with such bands as The Cocteau Twins but that does them a disservice. There is a hidden darkness tugging away at the gentle rhythms that gentle soothe you when listening to this album. >From the opening track, Ecantemento, the sounds that sweep away at you simply take you to somewhere much cleaner, somewhere you want to be. The album works so well in the way the tracks are layered that you can feel something building consistently behind it. It has a narrative, a course that it follows and pulls you with it. It allows you to create a vision to go with the soundscape the music creates. Ignore what you're supposed to see, or what you're force fed by heavy rotation playlists to imagine. Just slip away to when all you had was the music and your imagination and let yourself go. Remixing an entire album is a dangerous game; it can fall short of the original material and create something that bears little resemblance to the original creation. Yet throughout Do Outro Lado Do Espelho, the feeling of respect for Bruno shines through every remix on this album. By using Melissa Veras' vocals as an anchor point on each track, the sounds sweep around her like a gentle storm. >From knowing nothing about this band or its driving force Pinto, I'm converted instantly by what I've heard in this stunning collection and want to hear more from :papercutz. A perfect album for long summer days, you'll have to go a long way to hear a better collection of songs from Europe this year. A simply lovely album, I urge you to ignore the ambient tag and allow yourself to immerse yourself in this sumptuous collection. 8/10 David Newman http://www.audiomoves.com | Audiomoves > Digital audio solutions http://www.audiobulb.com | Audiobulb Records > Exploratory music -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Available now for free mp3 download: http://www.wanderingear.com/we014.html Oculus investigates the acoustic properties of visual art display mechanisms, combining field recordings and synthesized sound. Can visual information be described by the sound of its display? Are these sounds and their corresponding images mutually exclusive, or symbiotic? What happens when the background is separated from the foreground - does it merely leave a gaping hole, or create a new object with its own relationships and contexts to explore? John Kannenberg creates quietly reflective works in both image and sound that blur the boundaries between intention and accident. His works deal with a wide variety of themes including time, nature, mindful contemplation, collection, the sonics of space and place, and the processes of both making and observing art. John is the creator, designer and curator of Stasisfield.com, an interdisciplinary digital art space presenting a worldwide selection of artists. ----------- Wandering Ear is a net.label dedicated to releasing field recording-oriented audio from around the world. Bernd Schurer (CH) My artistic focus lies on the work with sound in a broad spectrum of different contexts: a constant shift, although, mostly investigating the experiential relationship between sound and what one would generally describe as space. There is a strong fascination in the study of the perception of sound and our interpretative patterns, and i have done some artistic "research" in the domains of Psychoacoustics, Architecture, Auralization, Sonification and AudioVisual Representation. Presentations my vary from Computer Music Diffusion to Installation work to abstract Sound Art. Some of it has been exhibited internationally on various scales, from micro galleries to public space, from "art at home" to the Venice Art Biennial. Since 1996 he is co-editor and curator for electronic sound pieces at the domizil.ch imprint in Z?rich, together with Marcus Maeder. Bernd Schurer was born 1970 in Zurich; he studied Philosophy and Film Science with Professor W. Schobinger at the University of Zurich in 1993 and Visual Art at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts 1998. He currently is a Master Student with Professors Germ?n Toro- Per?s and Martin Neukom of Electroacoustic Composition and Theory / Media-technology at the Z?rich University of the Arts (ZHdK). He lives in Z?rich and Berlin. http://heterophenomenological.net/ http://www.domizil.ch/ Daisuke Ishida (JP) Daisuke Ishida is a Berlin based artist working with sound and contemporary media. He is interested in designing processes, physical environments in artistic contexts. His works pursue aesthetics and consequence of computer music, and seek to realize synthetic space in sound. His research includes Acoustics, Auditory Perception, Complex Systems and Machine Learning Based Algorithm. He established AUSREIHE, an independent organization committed to experimental electronic/computer music since 2009, is involved with the artist collective NK, which is dedicated to sound art practices in Berlin. in 2005 he participated in the MobLab project, a Japanese-German media camp. Together with Ken Furudate, Kazuhiro Jo and Mizuki Noguchi, he founded The SINE WAVE ORCHESTRA and The SINE WAVE QUARTET in 2002, which received Honorary Mention in Digital Music category of the Prix ARS Electronica 2004 and Stiftung Niedersachsen work stipends for Media Art 2009 at Edith Russ Site for Media Art. Daisuke Ishida has presented his artistic activities internationally such as ICC - InterCommunication Center(Japan), deaf - Dutch Electronic Art Festival(The Netherlands), transmediale(Germany), ART + COMMUNICATION WAVES - ARSENALS of the Latvian National Museum of Art(Latvia), SMT - Sendai Mediatheque(Japan), YCAM - Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media(Japan), International Triennale of Contemporary Art YOKOHAMA(Japan), Japan Now modern performing arts festival(Germany), MART - Museum of Art, Rovereto and Trento(Italy), Interferenze new arts festival(Italy), ISEA - Inter-Society for the Electronic Arts(USA), steim(The Netherlands), La G?n?rale(France) and Edith Russ Site for Media Art(Germany). http://isddsk.com/ Lee Gamble (UK) Founding member of the UK-based CYRK collective, explores abstraction through computer software, improvisation, digital synthesis, process, and the deconstruction, mutation and reconstruction of form. He has performed solo throughout the U.K and Europe and in collaboration with electronic composer John Wall. His computer compositions are published via UK label Entr'acte. His recent full-length album Join Extensions has just been released; his second full length will be released in late 2010 on Berlin based computer music imprint AUSREIHE. It's where it stops being a burden and becomes an impediment to your ability to get your work done. The entire ideology of information technology for the last 50 years has been that more information is better, that mass producing information is better, but the net is not so much a machine with all the answers instantly, it has mutated into a "procrastination apparatus", which spews information without much prioritisation. And e- mail is worse because it is a weird mix of personal and mass communication. If people don't develop really harsh counter-measures, it will basically destroy their ability to use the computer in any productive way and it becomes the ruler of your time... Ultimately, time is a non- renewable resource. Once that day is gone, it is never coming back. Jakob Nielsen -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Our audio player is once again replenished with new sounds, so turn up the volume and enjoy ! Furthernoise issue June 2010 http://www.furthernoise.org/index.php?iss=86 "Something New: Moritz von Oswald Trio" (feature) Vertical Ascent sees Moritz von Oswald return to the fray to conspire with fellow tech-vets, Vladislav Delay and Max Loderbauer. A hybrid of techno, dub and Fourth World fusion, the timbral density, low- and high-end science, and a certain recursion are remotely familiar from of old, with something new coming from a live performance element. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=335 feature by Alan Lockett "Something Old: Monolake, Fluxion" (feature) The 15th year of Monolake was inaugurated with Silence. Robert Henke's latest evidences plenty still left in the creative tank. Something old, renewed. The same cannot be said for lately returned once fellow- traveller, Fluxion, whose dub and tech-house infused Perfused gives off a less than fresh aroma. Something old, alas, gone blue. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=338 feature by Alan Lockett "21st Century Preparation Man" (review) Eric Glick Rieman's prepared Rhodes electric piano involves as much dismantling as insertion, with the insides spread across the performing space, not to mention electronic preparations. What sets Rieman's music apart immediately are the mechanical noises and other native artifacts of the original instrument. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=340 review by Caleb Deupree "Fear of Stranglers - Gail Priest" (review) For some time now, Gail Priest has been exploring the timbre and elasticity of sound in a way that has become distinctly her own. Her new ep, Fear of Stranglers, is the next installment of this exploration, and takes her vocal and sonic manipulations to new levels of textural improvisation and processing. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=343 review by Roger Mills "Flight of the Solstice Queens - Blue Sausage Infant" (review) Washington DC based Blue Sausage Infant paints a dizzying array of sonic wash pulsing with color and Flight of the Solstice Queens does not fit neatly in any given sub-genre of drone, noise, or psyche rock. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=341 review by Derek Morton "L Phantasm - Brown Wing Overdrive" (review) New York extreme noise improvisers, Brown Wing Overdrive are back with another sonic assault with their new album L Phantasm. A "best of" collection from their haunted states circa 2006 and beyond, they describe it as a "prequel to all of BWO's releases thus far." Roger Mills investigates. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=342 review by Roger Mills "Something Blue: Pop Ambient 2010" (review) Kompakt marks each year with an issue of drone and tone poems showcasing the best in neo-classical and ambient. Pop Ambient 2010, curated by Kompakt kommissar Wolfgang Voigt, coordinates the usual shades of blue from perennials Marsen Jules, Andrew Thomas, and Thomas Fehlmann, while Brock van Wey makes a PA debut. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=339 review by Alan Lockett "Something Borrowed: Dettman, Van Hoesen" (review) Berlin's Marcel Dettmann, pre-eminent post-mnml practitioner, delivers his debut, Dettman, which, for all its veneer, is deep in debt to classic techno. Fellow-traveller Belgian producer Peter van Hoesen?s solution to "Techno: the LP Problem" is to tinker with tempo and texture, his Entropic City relieved by cranked down bpms and grit spray. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=334 review by Alan Lockett -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Monday 21st - Friday 25th June, with a live performance on Saturday 26th June. 7pm - 10pm. Saturday 26th June --- Live evening performance event with invited performers and all participants from the workshop!!! Book now! Participation is ?100 and limited to 20 people. There can be as many as 8 synthesis processes at any one time, and one "picture" window. Using this program alone, a whole audio-visual piece can be created and performed. - explore 3 types of granular synthesis, with grains made from the harmonics mixer, a drawn waveform or loaded sample. - use generated or drawn amplitude and frequency envelopes. - parameter sequencer lets you draw looping envelopes for many of the parameters: 6 per channel. - live mixer offers controls for volume, panning and frequency for both individual channels and the entire setup. - whole setups, including synthesis and sequencing, can be saved in slots and recalled under MIDI control. - create visual animations based on the sequenced parameters, plotting them in 2D space with user-definable shapes, colours and sizes. - most parameters controllable with "learned" MIDI CCs. - Released under the GPL and available for no cost. In June 2010, Particularity was named joint winner of the LoMus open- source music software competition organised every two years by the Association Fran?aise d?Informatique Musicale: http://www.afim- asso.org/spip.php?article1 Particularity is available for download at the following link: http://chrisjeffs.blogspot.com/2010/06/particularity.html From yves_tk at gmx.net Wed Jun 16 14:27:41 2010 From: yves_tk at gmx.net (Yves@GMX) Date: Wed, 16 Jun 2010 20:27:41 +0200 Subject: [microsound-announce] Matsunaga / Donnersperg / van Hasselt live! For more information, look up http://puredata.info/community/organization/pd-berlin/pd-berlin-users-group. We also encourage you to take an active part, and put up suggestions for topics you want to talk about / topics you want to be talked about. Doors are open from 20h-20h15. After that they'll be closed, and you will have to call someone from the Pd-meeting to get in. To get a telephone number to call or confirm assistance you can write to info_at_minitronics.net. Please, don?t call to the staff of NK to open the doors. They let us use the space but we have to take care about having the meeting without producing any disturbance to them, and to clean the space after the meeting. Monday 21st - Friday 25th June, with a live performance on Saturday 26th June. 7pm - 10pm. We're particularly interested in artists who use FLOSS audio and video tools under Linux with recycled technology, and who are resident in and around South Yorkshire. **Please note that we will pay a fee of ?75 per performance and there is a small budget toward travel, and while this call doesn't automatically exclude people from outside this area, we feel it may suite those residing closer to us** Unusual approaches to diffusion and sound generation e.g. using recycled computer speakers, are welcome! Our first event will be on the Friday 23rd of July, the second on 29th of October, and run 6pm-8.30pm. If you are interested in the first event please email an example of your work no larger than 7 Mb or a link to a media file, a description of your proposed performance and any technical requirements to jake at access-space.org by 2nd of July 2010. For the second event please contact us by the 31st of July 2010. Please forward this email to anyone you think might be interested. Access Space is an unusual venue for events of this kind as it is an open access media lab during the day and the technology available is all donated or recycled. About Access Space: Based in Sheffield city centre, Access Space is the UK's longest running open access media lab. We have been using Open Source Software and recycled computers to develop creativity, community, skills and resourcefulness for almost ten years. We're a place for skill sharing, artistic endeavour, creative expression and collective knowledge. Access Space has also recently announced plans for a DIY FabLab. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Jake Harries Digital Arts Programme Manager ACCESS SPACE Unit 1, AVEC Building 3-7 Sidney St Sheffield, S1 4RG, UK t: +44 (0) 114 249 5522 w: www.access-space.org Reg. You are invited to send by email a photo (or image, drawing...) you made or some words that you wrote during/after your visit of the exhibition (or otherwise 'inspired' by Yi Sang) to readmeapoemyisang at gmail.com At the end of the Yi Sang project, in september/october 2010, if there have been N contributions, you will receive by email 3600/N seconds of the sound piece as an mp3 file. Thus being - literally - cut up, the original sound file disappears. Each of the N contributions that were sent by email points to one of its N, randomly distributed, parts. Together these form an image of the piece that no longer exists, like a translation. Following on the heels of a decidedly unsuccessful round of climate negotiations in Copenhagen, the months of news coverage of oil gushing into the Gulf have provoked widespread unease with business as usual. As BP desperately attempts to recover both the oil and its public image, artists and designers from around the world are wrestling with the question of sustainability in the aftermath of these shocking events. The Deepwater Horizon accident coincided with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, a custom that itself came about partly in response to the Union Oil Platform A oil spill in Santa Barbara (1969). That spill, relatively small in comparison, catalyzed an environmental movement and the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States. It remains to be seen what lessons and institutions may arise from this summer of junk shots and containment domes, but there can be little doubt that the stakes are high. The Gulf of Mexico, already reeling from deoxygenated 'dead zones' due to pollution arriving via the Mississippi River, now faces unprecedented ecological challenges stemming from both the oil and chemical dispersants. Moreover, these events call attention to the problem of fossil fuel dependency in this era of global warming. The passionate and incisive responses of contemporary artists, unencumbered by journalistic norms of decorum, are an opportunity to see these historic events through the eyes of others who are fed up with humanity's unintended war on the environment. >> MediaNoche is the place where art, technology and community converge. We offer artists working in new media exhibition space and residencies in order to provoke a dialogue that blurs all lines of marginality and alterity. Unique among art and technology groups, MediaNoche is directly linked to the oldest Latino community of New York City, Spanish Harlem, and has showcased a roster of local and international new media artists. http://MediaNoche.us >> Transnational Temps is an international arts collective concerned with ecology, sustainability, and media. Since its formation in 2001 it has produced a series of critically acclaimed works and exhibitions under the banner Earth Art for the 21st Century. Working primarily from Europe and the United States, works to date have emphasized participation, tactical media, and spanning the sometimes awkward divide between activist advocacy and aesthetics. http://TransnationalTemps.net _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail is redefining busy with tools for the New Busy. Monday 26th ? Friday 30th : Live Media and FLOSS* Extended Production Seminary with Marco Donnarumma @Venue TBC ?80 pp *Free/Libre Open Source Software In-depth Theoretical and practical audiovisual live performance seminary using FLOSS. Pure Data audiovisual real-time processing, tricks and tips to create your own performance tool. Description The seminary consists of four parts. During the introduction the participants acquire a basic theoretical knowledge about Live Media. The introduction is extended through a review of selected audiovisual works in order to explore and analyse the potential of the audiovisual research. Therefore participants are introduced to the concept of FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software), they familiarize with few FLOSS software as they understand its practical and theoretical keystones. In the second part participants learn the meaning of ?real-time audio-video data processing? reviewing the most common production tools. Eventually they deal with the process of an audiovisual performance pre-production using FLOSS: from brainstorming and concept design, through planning of the audiovisual format, to the collection of support materials ? such as texts, tutorials ? and the drawing of sketches representing the logic structure of data processing. The third part focus on Pure Data graphical programming environment. Participants learn to communicate with Pd and how to surf through the audio and visual processing libraries. They build basic processing structures and discover tricks and tips to create their own performance tool. For the last part the work group is split in smaller groups. Through practical individual exercises participants acquire the technical know-how about the creation/collection of moving images and sonic events within the Pure Data graphical programming environment, thus they develop an original software, following the standard realisation steps: beta-testing, debug ? analysis of errors and its correction ? and final testing during a collective jam performance. Aim The seminary seeks to give the participants who don?t have previous experience in programming and Live Media practice the needed theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to feel comfortable within the FLOSS creation environment. The classes? aim is to make the participants able to understand and assimilate the diverse passages of the creation process of software ad-hoc in order to be independent during the planning and development of a FLOSS project (musical, audiovisual, multi-media or theater pieces) using the audiovisual language. Who?s it for Musicians, producers, live visualists, film-makers, programmers, sound designers or passionates of digital arts or electronic music and experimentation who want to enhance and extend their skills and tools will find this seminary inspirational and fundamental for the further development of their works and creative ideas, free from the limitations of user-friendly and proprietary software. No previous programming experience is needed. What to bring Participants are invited to bring their laptops and encouraged to bring musical instruments, cameras, photo cameras, webcam, microphones, sensors, MIDI devices and fresh, unusual ideas! The workshop is limited to 20 participants.
