Simbiotecnoise is a Brazilian noise group, focused on noise as a way to modulate cognitive and sensory patterns. The name Simbiotecnoise should be understood as a neologism, joining the words/ideas Symbioses, Biology, Technology and Noise. For the Kings' Arms gig Simbiotecnoise will perform a piece named "Tectonic, Windy and Vulcanic/Primitive Seas: Life" (by Pereira, Fawcett, Caron, Sarpa and Castanheira). On this occasion, Simbiotecnoise will be performing a composition entitled ?Tectonic, Windy and Vulcanic/ Primitive Seas: Life? J.-P. Caron (aka Jean-Pierre Caron) was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1982. He is active on both the contemporary classical and noise scenes, creating music for acoustic instruments and electronic means, as well as improvising on the piano, laptop or electronic keyboard. He studied musical composition at Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (Unirio) and is getting his masters degree in philosophy at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Next semester he begins his doctoral studies as a collaborative project between University of S?o Paulo (USP) and University of Paris 8 about philosopher Wittgenstein and the idea of rule- following as applied to musical (or sound) performances. Philosophy of perception, language, and the ontology of musical works and performances are some of the main subjects of his studies and interests. Musically he?s most interested in the way music shifts our perception of time, and all of his work somewhat deals with that. Other main interest is in extremities both physical and aesthetic, which he encountered in the noise/industrial and metal scenes. This branch of his work is conducted foremost in his electroacoustic industrial duo -notyesus>, with his friend Rafael Sarpa. Microtonality and psychoacoustic effects are also important features to be found in his output. weblink: www.myspace.com/jpccaron http://ryanjordan.org/ http://a10lab.info/ _________________________________________________________________ http://clk.atdmt.com/UKM/go/197222280/direct/01/ Do you have a story that started on Hotmail? Message-ID: A10Lab presents: Live Media and FLOSS* Extended Production Seminary with Marco Donnarumma Monday 26th - Friday 30th July 17:30-22:30 daily @ C4CC, 16 Acton Street, London, WC1X 9NG ?80 pp The workshop is limited to 20 participants. Please register by sending an email to info at a10lab.com or ryan-jordan at hotmail.co.uk with the subject heading ?LiveMedia and FLOSS workshop?. Full information here http://www.crealab.info/digitalab/?p=393 *Free/Libre Open Source Software In-depth Theoretical and practical audiovisual live performance seminary using FLOSS. Pure Data audiovisual real-time processing, tricks and tips to create your own performance tool. Description The seminary consists of four parts. During the introduction the participants acquire a basic theoretical knowledge about Live Media. The introduction is extended through a review of selected audiovisual works in order to explore and analyse the potential of the audiovisual research. Therefore participants are introduced to the concept of FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software), they familiarize with few FLOSS software as they understand its practical and theoretical keystones. In the second part participants learn the meaning of real-time audio-video data processing reviewing the most common production tools. Eventually they deal with the process of an audiovisual performance pre-production using FLOSS: from brainstorming and concept design, through planning of the audiovisual format, to the collection of support materials such as texts, tutorials, and the drawing of sketches representing the logic structure of data processing. The third part focus on Pure Data graphical programming environment. Participants learn to communicate with Pd and how to surf through the audio and visual processing libraries. They build basic processing structures and discover tricks and tips to create their own performance tool. For the last part the work group is split in smaller groups. Through practical individual exercises participants acquire the technical know-how about the creation/collection of moving images and sonic events within the Pure Data graphical programming environment, thus they develop an original software, following the standard realisation steps: beta-testing; analysis of errors and its correction; and final testing during a collective jam performance. Aim The seminary seeks to give the participants who don't have previous experience in programming and Live Media practice the needed theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to feel comfortable within the FLOSS creation environment. The classes' aim is to make the participants able to understand and assimilate the diverse passages of the creation process of software ad-hoc in order to be independent during the planning and development of a FLOSS project (musical, audiovisual, multi-media or theatre pieces) using the audiovisual language. Who's it for Musicians, producers, live visualists, film-makers, programmers, sound designers or passionates of digital arts or electronic music and experimentation who want to enhance and extend their skills and tools will find this seminary inspirational and fundamental for the further development of their works and creative ideas, free from the limitations of user-friendly and proprietary software. No previous programming experience is needed. What to bring Participants are invited to bring their laptops and encouraged to bring musical instruments, cameras, photo cameras, webcam, microphones, sensors, MIDI devices and fresh, unusual ideas! Autistici is the recording alias of David Newman, head of the Audiobulb label, though arguably his key work to date has come courtesy of the 12k label. The 2008- released Volume Objects remains an engagingly musical example of the microsound genre, though at the time you'd never have expected Autistici to have already accumulated such a rich archive of material. Compared with the first Early Works release, the music here is indicative of a more cultured technician, with pieces like 'Farm', 'Cutlery' and 'Stone Steps Into Water' revealing the workings of an accomplished experimental sound engineer. Similarly, mysterious electroacoustic miniatures like '14 Switches On A Hidden Wall' or 'Soft Grey Generator' stir up all manner of intriguing noises without sufficiently conforming to structure or narrative to be thought of as compositions in any strict sense, but they're ideal material for this enjoyable retrospective series." Radio aporee is an open project about the creation and exploration of public space. Its creator, Udo Noll asks you for help in creating an "audio snapshot of the world" as heard and recorded on World Listening Day. Aporee maps uses the Google maps interface to allow anyone to easily find their location on the map, then upload their audio via the web or mobile phone. We're inviting you to send an audio recording from your actual location, or other places of your interest on this day to the maps: http://aporee.org/maps/. With your contributions collected on World Listening Day, Udo will then create a dedicated project page on the aporee map. As Udo says, ",??besides having a nice documentation, I'm really intrigued by the idea of listening to the sounds of a particular day, around the world...." I'm very curious about what will happen, too. *Specifications for uploading* WEBSITE: http://aporee.org/maps/ FORMAT: mp3, 128-320 kbit, 44.1 or 48 kHz (for best audio quality, we recommend bitrates of 224, 256 or 320 kbps) FILE SIZE: max. 25 MB PLEASE NOTE: Contributors should type a tag "WLD" or "world listening day" in the keywords field, so that it can be found by searches. Please be patient while uploading, depending on your connection this may take a while. Below are *basic instructions* on how to send sounds (upload) to the radio aporee soundmap at _http://aporee.org/maps/_ 1. You don't need a login in order to participate, just a valid email address. 2. Find the location of your audio on the map and click on it 3. A small pops open that says "new place, add recording" with three choices: upload sound, fetch sound from URL, and phone call. 4. Select whichever method you're using to upload, navigate to the file if it's on your computer, fill in the form fields for info and email address, then click "ok" 5. Once your audio file has uploaded to the aporee server, check your email for a message from radio aporee 6. In the message you are provided with a link to confirm and edit the info about your audio submission, please remember to TAG YOUR SUBMISSION: "world listening day" and/or "WLD" 7. Once that's done your sound will appear on http://aporee.org/maps/. Questions? Contact: radio at aporee.org or visit the Help & How-to on radio aporee page. -- The purposes of World Listening Day are: * To celebrate the practice of listening as it relates to the world around environmental awareness, acoustic ecology, and us * To raise awareness about issues related to the World Soundscape Project , World Listening Project , World Forum for Acoustic Ecology , including individual and group efforts to creatively explore phonography * To design and implement educational initiatives which explore these concepts and practices --- You'll find the press release and further information on world Listening Day at http://www.worldlisteningproject.org/?p=667 --- All the best, -- Eric Leonardson, founder Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology (MSAE) Email: info at mwsae.org Web: http://mwsae.org WLP web: http://www.worldlisteningproject.org Skype: worldlistening Mobile: 773-218-5796 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It forgets history, To not repeat it. It doesnt hide analog music hardware, In digital music software. You had pulse, sine, triangle and sawtooth, And went forth and made electronic music. Now there is just the Bezier curve. Go make your pulse, sine, triangle or sawtooths again. Or this, this, this and this. This is nothing new. Some old men did it in the 60s! Punched numbers into cards! Now you edit waveforms in a GUI, And watch the sound change before your very ears. Has it got ADSR? Its got DADSARSADS. Filters? Infinite length delay lines. With Bezier envelope for feedback and volume. Modulation? Bezier on Carrier and Modulator. Eat that Chowning. Notes? Notes! Notes! Notes! Infinite microtones between two tones. Livecoding? In Tcl. ie LISP, with the (((()))) taken out. Look under the hood. Drive it. Neither will I bore you with the specifics. But as I was - ready to engage - this fleeting glimpse of the future struck me like a fucking flagpole. You may call it a vision, but I'd prefer if you didn't. Because it wasn't. Because a vision is a short lapse in time that allows you to see a possible future. And this wasn't. Not at all. This was the future, no negotiations possible. No blue pill / red pill shit. No. This is how it's gonna go down. I'm not looking into the future, because I already ride it as it takes the shape of yesterday's hangover or as yesteryear's unpaid taxbill. Like a herd of relentless hippos the future hunts me as my worst past to come. And it's not like I've got a skeleton in my closet waiting to make it's move. It's more simply that I lack the ability to adapt to the concept of time itself: Like my future actions will collide with those of my past. (Or is it the other way around?) Like me forcing all my differentiated universal speeds to align, only to result in me catching fire..." At the same time new forms of methodologies inspired or powered by free software, participatory practices and peer-to-peer networks are fueling many Internet subcultures. Some of these emerging practices will lead to competitive social productions, while other will remain as pure artistic experiments. By adopting production and distribution methods based on free software and open standards and by sharing the sources of one's work with others, the collective knowledge base and aesthetic sensibilities can freely interact to explore uncharted, hybrid directions which no longer reflect the supremacy of a single idea. - Does the sharing of artworks "recipes" and tools help debunk the myth of the isolated design genius? - By leaving the possibility of ongoing development and refinement, is it possible to ever produce a "final" design? - Can these methods and technologies inspire new forms of creation or tools, beyond self-referential productions? - Is it wishful thinking to approach collaborative graphical design in the same way as an open source software project? - Is Free and Open Source licensing a catalyst for creation or does it add an extra level of complexity? - Can the limitation of one license trigger new forms of constrained creativity? We're currently seeking new, innovative media art and design works and projects focusing on the above theme and questions: - graphical artworks and installations - lectures - project presentations - software and hardware demos We're also seeking audiovisual performances that will take place during the festival evenings. The submitted projects must fit this focus and be made in a free/libre and open source environment, this includes both its optional dependencies or production tools and the operating system. We are asking you to publish the sources of your project under a free culture license of your choice or release it into the public domain. Projects that do not meet these criteria will not be considered. *How to apply* Submission form and a list of additional requirements are available at: http://makeart.goto10.org/call/ Deadline: *Saturday 31 July 2010* Incomplete or late applications will not be processed. *Timeline* 31st of July 2010 ? Elemental Fields maps an often overlooked landscape in Kent to uncover its hidden sounds. Through ingenious field recordings, Lee Patterson explores the world around us, using it as an acoustic instrument to reveal how shifts in environments can impact our sonic experience. ?Field recording, especially with contact microphones or hydrophones, can confound what one thinks to know of the world, and this remains one of my main motivations, to be able to venture out and discover something of bizarre beauty, something unexpected that astounds and remains inexplicable within an apparently mundane, commodified and tamed world.? Lee Patterson Lee Patterson is at the centre of a network of artists whose work occupies a space between galleries and concert halls. In recent years he has developed a growing reputation in the international arena as a sound artist and improviser. Using unconventional approaches, he has invented new methods for producing music from everyday objects and amplified devices, as well as original processes for live sound generation. A regular collaborator with artist Luke Fowler, Patterson?s work has been shown at Tate Modern?s Long Weekend, the Barbican?s Radical Nature and AV Festival 10 in Newcastle Gateshead. Recorded works have been released on various albums. Since November last year, Patterson has been exploring and collecting material in King?s Wood and the Ashford flood plain, working closely with Stour Valley Arts and the Forestry Commission to identify areas of sonic and ecological interest. Through the use of contact microphones and hydrophones, he accesses the microscopic sound worlds of solid materials and underwater environments such as ponds, rivers, drainage ditches and moats. Patterson uses sound recording akin to a sketch book, providing the space for collection and artistic exploration. With these recordings Patterson creates work that provides sonic snapshots of specific landscape and reveals how these are continually in flux. In July, audiences will be able to experience these hidden worlds through a site specific sound installation which takes place in a found space in the middle of Ashford Town Centre but only minutes away from the flood plain. The installation will comprise a number of discrete rooms, each containing a soundscape composed of field recordings from two local sites: the flood plains surrounding Ashford and nearby King?s Wood in Challock, Kent. Patterson?s residency will culminate in 2011 with the launch of a physical work situated in King?s Wood. He aims to create a variety of sound making ?tools? through selective environmental interventions. One possibility is the creation of one or more ponds, which will be managed and stocked with specific sound producing organisms, as a way of composing underwater soundscapes and creating a rich ongoing sonic resource within the forest. more information: http://www.myspace.com/therealleepatterson http://www.sounduk.net/pr_page.php?pid=48 http://www.stourvalleyarts.org.uk/diary/index.html again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! framework tartu mnt 41 63710 ahja polvamaa estonia info at frameworkradio.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------ framework intro submissions: 1) take yourself and an audio recorder to a location of your choice 2) record for /AT LEAST/ one minute before you - 3) read aloud the following text: *welcome to framework. framework is a show consecrated to field recording, and its use in composition. field recording, phonography, the art of sound hunting; open your ears and listen!* */[3b) please also feel free to translate this text into your native tongue!] /* 4) continue your recording for /AT LEAST/ two minutes after you have finished speaking 5) post the recording to us on any format, or send us an mp3 thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ drop a note to info at frameworkradio.net to be added to or removed from this mailing list -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Instead of not playing an instrument, however, these tracks of unmanipulated phonography are the product of actively recording a space, more fully realizing Cage's motivation behind composing 4'33": the encouragement of active listening. By placing this practice within the context of museums, it both translates a primarily visual experience into a purely sonic one, and reaffirms the long-standing relationship that museums have with the experimental music world, serving as venues for avant-garde performances. Philip Jeck ? Bernhard Herrmann - Luis & Bebe Barron's "Forbidden Planet" - Kumo... In a previous century Gustav Mahler composed a symphony named "Titan". Created in search of a work that echoed industrialism and society in the nineteenth century. Philippe Petit believed that even if firmly rooted into Classical it was announcing what Contemporary music would become so it sounded natural to recontextualize, add new flavours by having something constantly modern in there. Philippe began work on a recording of the original symphony - re- editing, time-stretching, distorting, filtering. He then sent the result to Jono Podmore as a backing track. Who began work with his theremin and electronics by identifying areas he could enhance or develop or even alienate further from their original form, and then set to work improvising and layering new material into the piece, mindful of the collage aesthetic in Mahler's work. Jono sent the results to Philippe who began mixing both works and further processing the result. In a way reminiscent of "2001, A Space Odyssey" offering romantic music in an ultra modern design which set the orchestra in a new space... A little bit like if Bernhard Herrmann had scored the glorious "Forbidden Planet" sci-fi classic, listening to the soundtrack, the Titan you're heading for is Saturn's biggest moon! May the stars be with you... The backing track is now being transcribed for full orchestra by David Plate in K?ln as both intend to play the piece live: Philippe Petit and Kumo on electronics with a full symphony orchestra - it should be quite an event... A journalist for various magazines and radio as well as a musical activist, PETIT now celebrates his 25th year of sharing his musical passions Pursuing a tradition he had started with his "Reciprocess" project, given away with The Wire magazine issue 301, Petit is benefiting from the talent of Jono Podmore, aka KUMO, who has been part of the electronic scene since the 80's and collaborates with Irmin Schmidt from the legendary Can. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumo_(musician) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... At the same time new forms of methodologies inspired or powered by free software, participatory practices and peer-to-peer networks are fueling many Internet subcultures. Some of these emerging practices will lead to competitive social productions, while other will remain as pure artistic experiments. For example, a common hypothesis is that by adopting production and distribution methods based on free software and open standards and by sharing the sources of one's work with others, the collective knowledge base and aesthetic sensibilities can freely interact to explore uncharted, hybrid directions which no longer reflect the supremacy of a single idea. Such an assumption raises several questions: - Does the sharing of artworks "recipes" and tools help debunk the myth of the isolated design genius? How to apply Submission form and a list of additional requirements are available at: http://makeart.goto10.org/call/ Extended deadline: *Monday 2nd August 2010* Incomplete or late applications will not be processed.
