The results are anything but what you'd expect to see on TV. Likewise, when television collides with audio arts, a new and disconcerting soundtrack emerges, one that can only have been a product of artists swiping, sampling, detourning, recycling, remixing, and mashing-up sources emanating from the television. There's a great history of audio works mashed up, inspired by and taken from TV and we'll be listening to ten of them here. Unlike the works in the exhibition, these more ephemeral gestures travel in different ways, often reinserting themselves back into mass culture by means of mechanical reproduction, spread widely and thinly across culture. In many cases, this type of distribution has impacted back upon popular culture itself, creating an historical echo chamber. With no museum needed to reframe these works as art, the mere displacement from one medium into another creates an ecosystem unique to the recorded artifact, distinctly different than that of the visual. These works live on, perpetuating themselves in popular culture via the internet, as well as in the form of LPs, cassette tapes, CDs and MP3s. On the last day of 2010, the Soundtransit.nl site will officially close. SoundTransit has been a collaborative, online community dedicated to field recording and phonography. In the ?Book? section of the site, you could plan a sonic journey through various locations recorded around the world. In the ?Search? section, you could search the database for specific sounds by member artists from many different places. If you are a phonographer, you could also contribute your recordings for others to enjoy. The Waag Society in Amsterdam, who physically hosts the Soundtransit server, has more than quadrupled the rent in the past year. Relocating to a cheap shared commercial host is simply not possible based on the unique technical needs of the site, so we are forced to shut the project down. The archived field recordings will hopefully be relocated through the kind support of Soundcloud.com, however the ability to make and send transits will be lost. I would personally like to thank each and every one of the contributors and users for their support, interest and enthusiasm over the last years, and I wish them all the best of luck with their future projects. Deep drones drown in thick layers of reverb, distant fragments of old flexi disc recordings oscillate between the scattered grains of guitar and piano loops. ?This Once Silver Sky? dives into the territory between abstract ambient music and deeply buried emotional explorations offering a 30 minute journey. It is an ode to nothingness, the enchanting absence of meaning. The album will be released as a highly limited CD-R edition. Digital versions will be made available once the physical versions are sold out. You can order the release at Ripples Recordings: http://ripplesrecordings.webs.com/ for 7 Euros including shipping. WADE MATTHEWS - Early Summer ____________________________ format: CD duration: 44 minutes, 10 tracks limited to 200 copies price: 11 euros - shipping included _________________________________________________ EARLY SUMMER 10 improvised sound collages by Wade Matthews What this music is about and how it was made These are 10 virtual soundscapes selected from among 14 made in Madrid in late June and early July 2009, hence the name, Early Summer. They are improvised sound collages, real-time assemblages of field recordings (manipulated to greater or lesser degrees), noises, electroquotes and digital synthesis. The field recordings were made over the last two years in the San Francisco Bay area, La Mancha, and Madrid. The noises were recorded at my studio in Madrid. There is one electroquote, but it is significantly altered and might thus more accurately be called an "electro-misquote." The digital synthesis was carried out in real time, that is, played as part of the process of improvising these pieces. My setup contains two laptops, which I play simultaneously. The left one is for synthesis, the right one has all the field recordings and noises. The playing process involves triggering, stopping, filtering and mixing the recordings on the right computer while simultaneously playing the software synthesizer in the left computer. The results are sent to a pair of loudspeakers, each of which has a microphone in front of it. The mics are in turn sent to my recording setup. So these pieces are recorded in stereo, as is. There is no remixing and a minimum of touching up---basically just a couple of fades. I chose this setup, rather than multi-track recording, because I wanted the end result to really reflect the improvisatory nature of these pieces, avoiding the temptation to "recompose" them post-facto. With some pieces I had a clear idea what materials I was going to work with and I simply began to play, triggering and stopping them according to how the piece evolved while simultaneously adding touches of synthesis, sometimes for structural reasons, other times simply as "sonic seasoning." With other pieces, I had only one or perhaps two sounds in mind and simply began playing, adding other things as the piece went along. In all cases, there are two elements that I find especially interesting about working with the medium of sound collage: The first is the possibility of non-integrated sound spaces. In these pieces, each of the field recordings, noises, and synthesized sounds occupies its own space. The field recordings, for example, occur in specific acoustic conditions that are clearly audible in the recordings. Thus, these sound collages combine not only sounds but also sound spaces. The sounds often coexist in time but not necessarily in audible space. At any given time, a particular sound may not be audibly in front of, behind or beside, another sound. Instead, it may be in another space altogether, a more distant one, or a closer one, a more resonant space or a dryer one. I find this sort of spatial counterpoint very interesting as it brings out the paradox of sounds, many of which are natural, coinciding in a way that has only become possible in "nature" in our time. Until quite recently, if we were in a particular sonic environment---say one with very little resonance like the inside of a crowded bus---then any sound we heard there would be directly affected by that acoustically dry setting. Likewise, any sounds we heard in a large train station would be marked by its reverberance---they might be closer or farther away, but they would all be in that space. Now, however, we can get on that crowded bus, shove a pair of earphones into our ears and simultaneously be listening to the bus noises and a recording of a string quartet performed at Carnegie Hall. The bus noises will enter our hearing and may even cover up the sound of the string quartet at some points, but the bus's acoustic conditions---its lack of resonance---will in no way reduce the reverberant field of Carnegie Hall in which we are hearing the string quartet. Likewise, the resonance of that hall will add no reverberation whatsoever to the bus noises. This coexistence of different soundspaces in our auditory field is quite new and so I've enjoyed exploring it here. The second is the chance to play beyond or against memory. Here, I am not interested in combining things I know will work. I want to combine sounds that may not work. More precisely---and this is the crux of the matter for me---I want to combine sounds that will work in ways I had not discovered beforehand. It's not so much a matter of combining disparate materials and figuring out how to make them "work" as of using those unexpected combinations to redefine one's personal definition of what it means to "work." One final observation about these pieces' durations: I wanted to try making short pieces, aphorisms that just present an idea and let each listener draw his or her own conclusions about its possible ramifications. At best---and I hope to have succeeded to at least a small degree---they might be taken as sonic koans. Furthernoise issue December 2010 http://www.furthernoise.org/index.php?iss=89 "Effective Disconnect/Endless Falls/Powers of Audition" (feature) The venerable Kranky continually, coherently, renews its ambient-drone- space-postrock mission with refinements to its blends. 2010 is no exception; from Brian McBride's neo-classical soundtrackery to the latest doleful Loscil is an appreciable leap, yet in line with house style. Jonas Reinhardt's Kartoon Kosmische, however, might have been best kept out of the house. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=364 feature by Alan Lockett "59 Airplanes Waiting For New York" (review) Early on in 59 Airplanes Waiting for New York the air of a strange familiar wafts through its ambiguous lulling loops. This work will be a three dimensional realization of a sound map of the Katonah Museum area. Imagining the museum as a center, Sherk has developed a map moving outward along the north, east, south and west axis of the building. Radiating in precise quarter mile increments along 50 degrees, 140 degrees, 230 degrees, and 320 degrees (the axis of the building) he has identified points in which he intends to make field recordings of the ambient sounds. Additional points have also been identified for up to 18.5 miles from the museum along the four axis directions. Field recordings were made at each point which included municipal garbage sites, private beach clubs, state parks, and private estates. Recordings were edited into a four-channel work that will be installed in the Project Gallery of the Katonah Museum of Art. The work will highlight the sounds of the space that surrounds the museum and contributes to the aural ambience and soundscape of the area. The work will be presented continuously on custom built speakers. The sounds of traffic, wildlife, and the drones of contemporary life when re-assembled create a mysterious and surprising space. The exhibition opens on October 3, 2010 and continues until January 9, 2011 at the Katonah Museum of Art in Katonah, New York." for more information see http://www.thethirdbarn.org, or http://www.katonahmuseum.org. again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated /*framework:afield*/ series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! framework tartu mnt 41 63710 ahja polvamaa estonia info at frameworkradio.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------ framework intro submissions: 1) take yourself and an audio recorder to a location of your choice 2) record for /AT LEAST/ one minute before you - 3) read aloud the following text: *welcome to framework. framework is a show consecrated to field recording, and its use in composition. field recording, phonography, the art of sound hunting; open your ears and listen!* */[3b) please also feel free to translate this text into your native tongue!] /* 4) continue your recording for /AT LEAST/ two minutes after you have finished speaking 5) post the recording to us on any format, or send us an mp3 thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ drop a note to info at frameworkradio.net to be added to or removed from this mailing list -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The sound component is the sonification of astrophysical data and the simulation of dynamic systems. The installation consisted of computer controlled electro-luminescent wires, quasi-spherical light projections and 10.2 channel audio. The light installation, its custom controllers and the light projections were created by Cologne-based group Interpalazzo. Schmickler created various musical parts especially for this collaborative work. 'RR 0' is the process running at sunset before dark, after which the light installation becomes visible. The piece was originally conceived for 'The Bonn Patternization' - which explores the sonification of astrophysical data. The basis of 'The Bonn Patternization' consists of readings for different stars, star clusters and galaxies, as well as their properties such as light, distance and coordinates. In addition, sounds are generated from systems that arithmetically simulate astronomically relevant phenomena such as the interaction between celestial bodies due to gravitation. The process underlying 'RR 0' simulates the behavior of objects or clusters of objects in a gravity field. It is based on a visual embodiment primarily implemented in Supercollider by Fredrik Olofsson and reworked into a Subtractive Synthesis application with the help of Alberto de Campo. * 25:41 EVOL 'Untitled Anthem Study', 2010 (12:37) * After reading Beno?t Mandelbrot's 1982 *The Fractal Geometry of Nature* in 1998, Roc Jim?nez de Cisneros became fascinated with self-similarity and iterated function systems and their possible application to musical structures. This piece, which was finished a few days after Mandelbrot's death in the fall of 2010, uses several synthesis models originally written for *Rave Slime* (ALKU, 2010) in combination with a recursive algorithm that was used in the composition *Fart Synthesis* (Presto!?, 2009). The piece is one of many studies realised in the research process started in late 2008 to combine rave-inspired sounds with generative algorithms to explore particle physics concepts such as configuration spaces, parameter permutations and phase spaces. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... An Introductory Seminar to Generative Systems as Applied to Art and Music. Led by Roc Jim?nez de Cisneros. Over the past 30 years, and especially during the past decade, several environments and programming languages have been developed leading to a greater interest in that which is often called generative art, which ? among other things ? proposes an approach to the algorithm as a tool of creation. These generative practices often raise interesting questions about the nature of the creative act, blurring the essence of apparently clear concepts such as authorship, tool, work or process. This seminar will provide a historical overview, from antiquity to the computer age, on the use of algorithms and rules to generate sound and musical pieces. Roc Jim?nez de Cisneros will discuss in depth several current generative musical practices, using some of his own pieces (and also some of his usual collaborators) as a departing point, while inviting participants to share their own works, experiences or concerns in the field of generative composition. This seminar will be taught in Spanish. catal?: [ http://lullcec.org/?p=1606&lang=ca ] castellano: [ http://lullcec.org/?p=1606&lang=es ] english: [ http://lullcec.org/?p=1606&lang=en ] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16-18.12.2010 Army of Darkness. Generative sound installation by Gullibloon. Army of Darkness is a generative sound installation, in which custom-programmed minirobots act as instrumentalists, playing electric guitars and basses. The robots move freely in a room with a network of black lines laid out on the floor. They are programmed to follow the lines and to find their way back on course in case of going off track. On some special points of interest, guitars and basses are placed upside down so that the robots, prepared with a kind of plectrum, are able to play the instruments by driving underneath them. Sensors monitor these points and initiate a plucking algorithm. Each robot tries to play a guitar or bass for a certain amount of time and moves on afterwards. The robots can detune the instruments by hitting the boundaries of the installation. This triggers the detuning of one or more instruments, generating complex harmonics that evolve throughout the session. Changes in the distortion applied by a computer to the sound of the instruments before feeding the amplifiers and the decrease of the robots? battery power configure a dramatical progression of the piece until reaching the throes of death. Her work initially focused upon the collection and manipulation of ?real-world? sound material and the exploration of its abstract properties. Occasional deviations into synthetic and instrumental sources are now developing into more prominent ingredients. Each new sound-space is created by taking everything possible from the tiniest element, working to make something from nearly nothing. This reduction in means yields a density and richness of results. As a solo (laptop) player she presents her music live on a regular basis, and is also a member of various improvising electro-acoustic ensembles involving musicians such as Lee Patterson, Andrea Neumann and Rhodri Davies. Her live sets are intended for dark spaces and involve multi-layering and improvisation with her sound materials in order to create a unique environment for each new performance. Studio collaborations are currently underway with Dutch composer Esther Venrooy and Swiss sound artist Zimoun. Her debut solo album was released at the beginning of 2007 by the London based label Entr?acte, followed by a second album is June 2010. http://www.helenagough.net http://www.myspace.com/helenagough Bernd Schurer?s artistic focus lies on the work with sound in a broad spectrum of different contexts: a constant shift, although, mostly investigating the experiential relationship between sound and what one would generally describe as space. There is a strong fascination in the study of the perception of sound and our interpretative patterns, and there has been done some artistic research in the domains of Psychoacoustics, Architecture, Auralization, Sonification and Audio- Visual Representation Systems. Presentations may vary from Computer Music Diffusion to Installation work to abstract Sound Art. Some of it has been exhibited internationally on various scales, from micro galleries to public space, from ?art at home? to the Venice Art Biennial. Since 1996 he is co-editor and curator for electronic sound pieces at the domizil.ch imprint in Z?rich, together with Marcus Maeder. Bernd Schurer was born 1970 in Zurich; he studied Philosophy and Film Science with Professor W. Schobinger at the University of Zurich in 1993 and Visual Art at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts 1998. He currently is a Master Student of Electroacoustic Composition and Theory / Media-technology at the Z?rich Univeristy of the Arts with Professors Germ?n Toro- Per?s and Martin Neukom. http://heterophenomenological.net http://domizil.ch The tuba player Robin Hayward, born in Brighton, England in 1969, has been based in Berlin since 1998. He has redefined the tuba?s potential both in the areas of noise and microtonality, and his compositions for other instruments reflect a similar experimental, medium-specific approach. Pieces have been written for him by such composers as Alvin Lucier and Christian Wolff. He has toured extensively both solo and in collaboration. His approach to the tuba has been documented in the solo CDs Valve Division and States of Rushing, along with various collaborative releases. Active in many contemporary music ensembles including Phosphor and Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, in 2005 he founded Zinc & Copper Works for continued research into brass instruments. The Microtonal Tuba ?Originally conceived by Robin Hayward in 2003, the first fully microtonal tuba was developed in 2009 together with the firm B&S, with support from B&S and the Berliner Senat. The new system makes it possible to play every conceivable pitch throughout the instrument?s five octave range. All tuning systems, both tempered and non-tempered, thus become readily available, and the tuba?s timbral potential may now be explored independently of its microtonal potential.? http://www.robinhayward.de/ -- NK PROJEKT http://www.nkprojekt.de/ Elsenstr. 52/ 2.Hinterhaus Etage 2 12059 Berlin Neuk?lln 0049(0)17620626385 JULIAN PERCY http://www.myspace.com/ratbag_ http://www.myspace.com/lastdominionlost GRATIS! * ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *#311: 2010.12.26 * well, we've almost made it through to the end of another year - 2011 will be the 10th calendar year to see /*framework*/ broadcasts! we are currently snowed in on the east coast of the united states, thanks to the Great Blizzard of 2010, but the region is buzzing with the sounds of snowplows and snowblowers, and hopefully everything will be more or less back to normal by the time our scheduled flight back home to estonia is due to leave tomorrow evening. cross your fingers for me. the last activity on this u.s. trip was to make a guest appearance on *susanna bolle*'s /*rare frequency*/ program, which broadcasts as part of the /*no commercial potential*/ programming on boston's 90.3 *wzbc* fm. this station was my great inspiration, both in the realms of sound art and radio art. i listened to /*no commercial potential*/ growing up here in boston, and it introduced my ears to many, many new sounds. so for me, having the opportunity to appear in that studio on that frequency is a great honor. the program is available in the archives, and can be listened to here: http://zbconline.com/wzbc-2010-12-23-20-00.m3u http://zbconline.com/wzbc-2010-12-23-21-00.m3u my visit begins at about minute 38 of the first hour, and continues through to the end of the 2nd. if the m3u's don't work for you, you can substitute mp3 as the file extension on those urls. this edition, the last for the year, included almost entirely unreleased, self-released, or free downloadable material. all of *federico de biase*'s works are available on his soundcloud page. *steve peter*'s beautiful piece of radio art (we'll playing more from this release in coming shows) is available from his bandcamp page. *david papapostolou*'s release is available as a free download from *av/.o*, the digital sister label of the uk's *authorised version*. you may also notice a familiar voice in *neil griffith*'s first piece. perhaps is was a bribe just to assure airplay, but neil used material from an interview he conducted with me for canadian radio earlier this year as partial source for the piece. it was a surprise to me as well! again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated /*framework:afield*/ series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! Message-ID: <51D123AE-CB0E-4359-A0D8-5EE8773DEFF0@gmail.com> Dear Friends, I'm still collecting memories of sound for my installation Soundtracks. Some of you have allready sent a recollection in (thank you), and others have let me know their letter is underway. But I still need a lot more recollections, so I'm sending out the call for memories of sound again. Please send one in, consider it a special christmas card for me. I'll be eternally grateful The idea behind soundtracks is to build an archive of memories of sound. Memories of sounds that were important to you, that struck you or stayed with you. Soundtracks wants to research which kind of sounds get remembered, and how they are remembered. Can we hear those sounds again in our heads, or can we only remember the circumstances of the situation; the outlines, the edges of the sound? And that?s why I would like to ask you to take a moment and try to find your recollection of a sound, a sound that was important to you. And I would want to ask you to write down your memory, on paper. And if you could send that memoy by post to this address: Soundtracks Hopstraat 40 1000 Brussels Belgium You can find some more info on Soundtracks on this URL: http://versonatura.org/audio/stijn/stijnWsoundtracks.html I thank you in advance, Kind regards, merry christmas & a happy new year. Stijn Demeulenaere Ps: It?s important that the memories are WRITTEN BY HAND, so please, no emails or typed letters. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Dozens of USAF personnel were eyewitnesses to various events over a two or three day period. Some Ufologists believe it is perhaps the most famous UFO event to have happened in Britain, ranking amongst the best-known UFO events worldwide.
