He's a public health doctor and a psychiatrist, but we are more familiar with his music-making side. It's fair to say that this is a very fortunate combination, for he knows the power of music to heal wounds and balancing all those small, unstable parts conforming a person..." That would be the voices in Spanish musical pioneer Francisco Lopez's head talking to him again. Oh no wait, it has happened, its been done. And here it is - "Birmingham Sound Matter" and it's collaboration of the weirdest, wonder-fullest, strangest, cl-ickiest, randomist sounds in one record, from Birmingham (of all places). This concept is simple enough, but the content is a totally different kettle of fish cakes. You have to really understand what is going on before you can reach a conclusion to this latest release from Audiobulb. The Sheffield based independent label releases some of the most unique electronica to hit our playlists. "Birmingham Sound Matter" creates a compilation of sounds you wouldn't really pay any attention to in a normal setting. There are children playing, birds singing, bee's buzzing and cars wooshing past. Francisco Lopez seems to be a very complex individual; by talking about "reality" and all sorts of different mind sets (this is all on the CD sleeve, not in the music). This is definitely Exploratory music. The headline to the album is mental enough for me "Typically, recorded sound is considered as a representation of reality. Birmingham Sound Matter demonstrates that a sound recording can also be considered as an entity by itself." An entity itself? Sounds like David Icke has had his footing in the door for this one. Each track has had a different artist dip their musical wick into it. Layer by layer they must have had to tediously place each sound in a certain way, with a certain effect. 'Last Days" by Mark Harris sounds like the soundtrack to the film "Crash" with a warm ambient layer of synths and wobbly chords. Helana Gough's - 'Grau' has a glitch approach, with random bursts of scratchy energy and uncomfortable samples. I'm not quite sure what the hell she was sampling there! This is music for the uber intellectual electronic music producer. It's just something that is so hard to understand, yet its magical in many ways. This is more like a soundtrack to a film really. Just wanted to take a moment to thank you all very much for your support and taking the time to read our newsletters. Please help spread the word about Experimedia. Every little bit helps us bring you great music/art. Ill get some stickers going here soon and start throwing some in with orders. Also a little insight to whats behind Experimedia. 100% of Experimedia is operated by myself with only the kind assistance and support of my family and great friend/artist Jason Henry (and all our artists of course too). And like most people working in this community I myself have a full time day job and a family. This is strictly an operation of passion and over the years like many of you I have put way more into it financially than I have received, and that is ok! I am and always will be dedicated to the music/art and all the wonderful beautiful people who contribute to this community. Getting music by wonderful artists to your wonderful ears is what we're all about. Also please send us your comments, suggestions, labels/artists you would like to see us stock, things you love or hate about the site. Next year is Experimedia's 10 year anniversary and I hope to do some special things/promos/releases that I am pretty excited about. Hopefully you will be too. (Oxford American Dictionary). Probing the aural Cities are sound installations - organic sound-emitting devices. They are both 'generative pieces' and 'field recordings'. Our auditory system defines our own individual acoustic space in such an environment. By wandering around, by consciously controlling the way we listen, we can alter this sonic-image and shape it according our will. We can interpret given space, inhabit its sonic qualities and seek aesthetic potential there. The act of recording highlights and documents such a praxis, while enables me to further shape the soundscape in respect to how various pieces of equipment listen to and perceive sound. But what ultimately matters, is awareness of the sounds around us. By trying to compose out of given space, I seek to highlight this perceptional shift. Letting Sound guide me to wherever it may, upgrades everyday life experiences into stand-alone compositions. Assembling experiences The material consists of field recordings made in the cities of Amsterdam, Athens, Berlin, York, London, Vienna, Brussels, Gent, Antwerp, Liverpool, Leeds and inside various means of transportation between them.Post production was cosmetic ? limited to a couple of necessary edits just to remove some short clippings and handling noises. No further manipulation is being applied to the recordings. I chose to provide no indexes both to avoid associations and to highlight the continuity in the act of being aware to sound. MK, 2009 1st edition of 180 cdrs TREVOR JONES STUDIO SESSIONS vol I The first months of the 2009 I composed a series of generative pieces that were later performed in the control room of the Trevor Jones Studio in York, Uk, in four impovised sessions (02, 03, 18 and 20 of March). The focus was on how sound alters the aesthetic and physical qualities of the site and how it challenges its functionality. It was an attempt to establish a sonorous architecture within the room. I scholastically tried to create meaningful phonographic representations of my efforts to dominate the space, so I could end up with brand new fixed media works out of these attempts. That is to treat my own performance as if a found soundscape to interpret. Careful microphone selection and positioning is a powerful compositional tool on its own. In these recordings I used a pair of Neumann U-87i microphones. It soon become evident, though, that these original recordings were that highly depended on the site itself, that it was impossible to master. So I re-record everything in the only place where it sounded nice, using a Soundfield ST-250 microphone, in order to end up with a smoother version. For the record, I only used the supercollider programming environment and a Lexicon TC 6000 system. THIS ALBUM HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ORIGINAL TREVOR JONES STUDIO SESSIONS ! Obviously, Dubloop's new Pertin-nce netrelease "Ko-jee-ma" isn't about the perfected layouts normally found in "minimal" production. Inside the window of his windowless Quebec City studio, Maxime Tanguay generously makes use of many oblique accidents (or were they planned out beforehand?) and captures the unpredictability of a live performance in four distinct yet related pieces. With Dubloop, he's found the perfect alias for falling happily off the safety net of a DAW grid. Like previous Dubloop recordings, any found sound can take form the basis of a track. In this release, Maxime used field recordings from a winter getaway to Cuba's "Ko-jee-ma" (or was it the Villa Cojimar Resort? Max doesn't quite remember) as the basis of the primary 'ambient dub' sound. And then there's the story of the EP itself. Created years after the visit to Cuba, things get a bit hazy upon recollection. But there's a narrative to the disorientation where nothing is lost in translation but recaptured, remembered and reinterpreted. There's something that happens on Day 1: "adaptation", "figuring out", "wondering why" upon entering this new virtual or physical real of experience. Eventually, we arrive at Day 2 and "su-pero" -- which means the hotel has just stocked the minibar with a dark bottle of Cubay and some singing Guaracheros possibly just turned a corner three blocks away. Disorienting, imprecise. We learn to grasping at things and meaning, then let them go. links : www.pertin-nce.com www.myspace.com/pertinnce www.beatport.com/labels/pertin_nce www.pertin.etsy.com From ondasonoraradio at yahoo.es Thu Oct 8 17:27:06 2009 From: ondasonoraradio at yahoo.es (Onda Sonora Radio) Date: Thu, 8 Oct 2009 21:27:06 +0000 (GMT) Subject: [microsound-announce] Contents Onda Sonora Radio 10-10-09 Message-ID: <896625.99804.qm@web25601.mail.ukl.yahoo.com> ONDA SONORA (Experimental Radio Sessions), Madrid (ES)O ?Radio C?rculo de Bellas Artes 100.4 FM Saturdays. 01h. www. circulobellasar tes.com www. ondasonoraradio .com? I would prefer to sell the entire system as one piece. I have no idea what shipping would cost (weight is around 12 kilos I think), let me know if you can't pick it up locally and I'll investigate (before 15 Oct please, I'll be away some time after that). The prices listed below are retail, and then 80% of retail, which is normally what used modules tend to sell for. The artist picked one of the desks in the editorial office of Beijing Youth Weekly and placed recording devices, mp3 players and cassette walkman in it. The devices either reproduce the interview recordings of the magazine?s editorial staff, or record the soundscape of the office, which will be simultaneously played and processed in real time through headphones while creating feedback noise. The staff and writers of Beijing Youth Weekly, the people who go to the magazine?s office for business purposes, and the friends and relatives of the above mentioned are the only people allowed to experience the piece, using the headphones displaced in the office. After Stockholm with Carl Michael von Hausswolff and Amsterdam with dj sniff, Yan Jun's News For Tomorrow introduces the third Birdcage episode. The piece is also part of ?The Invisible Generation? programme of art interventions in the cities of Melbourne, Beijing, Shenzhen and Kiev and will be exhibited, as a replica, at Blank / Beijing Zhongjian Gallery from the 24th of October 2009. urls: http://www.birdcagespace.com http://theinvisiblegeneration.blogspot.com/ http://www.yanjun.org produced by: Vision Forum - http://www.visionforum.eu Yan Jun (born in Lanzhou in 1973, now based in Beijing) explores the realm of sound and language using different tools as feedback noise, drone sound, voice, field recording, site-specific sound installation, impro music, environmental sound, writing, publishing and curating. The Ghetto Biennale will be held in and around the Grand Rue in downtown Port-au-Prince, Haiti in December of 2009. The Grand Rue is home to a community of internationally renowned sculptors. Due to the political and cultural climate there they are being denied United States entry visas and government support to participate in major biennales elsewhere in the world. Because of this they have invited a select group of international artists, architects, designers and thinkers to Port-au-Prince to make work and discover what happens when radically different cultures come together. As the organizers and curators for the event have said, " What happens when first world art rubs up against third world art? Does it bleed?" As there is no internal funding for this event I, along with all of the other artists, am having to raise all funds privately. My proposal for participation in the event follows: Firsthand accounts of the apprenticeship system and the Grand Rue artists? relationship to materials are at the core of this project. Using sound recording technology and displaying the finished work as a four channel audio sculpture the goal is to engender a dialog from which both cultures can take away something meaningful. My approach will encompass documentary, deep listening, recording that focuses on the sounds that are often caught between the labels of ?background? and ?foreground? in our consciousness, and environmental sound recording. I am hopeful that what I make there will be useful to both cultures. Recorded, mixed, and edited by Blue Hell. Originally recorded Saturday, September 26th, 2009 as a live streaming collaborative performance on radio.electro-music.com between Blue Hell (The Netherlands) and Shane Morris (USA). The performance was nearly five consecutive hours of live improvisational electronic music. There was nothing pre-conceived, arranged, or composed for this performance. In fact, neither performer has ever physically met or spoken to the other performer. This recording is entirely the product of internet relay chat, streaming audio, and a friendship that exists beyond a material realm. This recording is the highlights from that session boiled down and edited to two hours of engaging experimental electronics. The mechanism to do the streaming jams has come to be known as, The Washing Machine. It is a system designed by Blue Hell to mix multiple streaming musicians around the world together in near real-time audio and combined into one stereo channel mix that is broadcasted live at electro-music.com. Blue Hell will mix the streamers, apply post effects, and record the final output as the mixed stream is directed to the radio server. The Washing Machine concept very much embraces Cagian ideals of randomness, chaos, and improvisation. For this session, Blue Hell used two Nord Modular G2 rack units, a Nord Modular Classic, laptop, iphone, and a Yamaha WX11 midisax. Shane Morris used a Roland MC-909, Digitech Vocal 300 processor, and a vocal microphone. The event is made possible with the support of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), as part of the Beyond Text Programme and City University London. This one-day conference, convened by City University London Music PhD-researcher, Owen Green, will gather together postgraduate researchers in Live Electronic Music and allied disciplines to explore issues and challenges around practice-led research in this area. In addition to paper sessions and opportunities to network with fellow researchers, the conference will feature an improvisation workshop on collective electronic play, open equally to beginners and the more experienced. Keynote speaker Leigh Landy will share with the conference the benefit of his extensive experience of, and insights into, practice-led research in electronic music. In the evening an exciting concert will feature a collective performance of various compositions by a group of special guest researchers from the University of Edinburgh, including Martin Parker, Jules Rawlinson, Sean Williams and Lauren Hayes, in collaboration with conference convener, Owen Green. Attendance is free, but forward booking is essential. Please see http://outsidetheboxconference.blogspot.com for a full schedule and booking information. It is based on IRC, the oldest text-based Internet chat environment. This intervention will transform an IRC chat room/channel into a simple, collaborative, text-based online system for making music. Since IRC allows ?chat bots?- computer programs that pretend to be human conversation partners -, we will program such a bot to create a collective musical composition environment based on Internet chats. In this workshop, participants will explore two parts of the project: designing sound generators in Supercollider that they can control via a simple IRC bot written in Python. Workshop is taught by Aymeric Mansoux and Jan-Kees van Kampen from GOTO10. PREREQUISITES: This workshop is aimed to beginners, no previous knowledge is required but a basic understanding of computers and an unconditional love for command line and text based interfaces is mandatory! Since then it has been evolving into a system used and further developed by both scientists and artists working with sound. It is an efficient and expressive dynamic programming language which makes it an interesting framework for acoustic research, algorithmic music and interactive programming. We will deal with practical sound-synthesis, jitlib (rapid prototyping), and get ourselves sounding ready for the irc-jam on the second day. === About Python === Python is a general-purpose high-level programming language. Its design philosophy emphasizes code readability. Python claims to "[combine] remarkable power with very clear syntax", and its standard library is large and comprehensive. === About Puredyne === Puredyne is an operating system developed to provide media artists with a complete set of tools for realtime audio and video processing. Puredyne is a live distribution, you don't need to install anything. Simply boot your computer using the live CD or USB and you're ready to start using software such as Pure Data, Supercollider, Icecast, Csound, Fluxus, Processing, Arduino and much much more. === About GOTO10 === GOTO10 aims to support and grow digital art projects and tools for artistic creation, located on the blurry line between software programming and art. GOTO10's members have backgrounds in visual arts, sound art, music technology, physical computing and programming. The name is a somewhat ironic play on the term "biennale" which, in cultural terms, has come to mean the same thing as "art fair". Tons of money being thrown after bogus commodities that mean little to nothing beyond their applied or invented value. I know the name sounds strange, but put into context its effect is positive. The Ghetto Biennale is being organized by an international group with members in the United States, UK, and Haiti. The reason that they are organizing this residency/exhibition is to, among many reasons, turn the tables on the perceived economic and professional discrimination that the artists in Haiti are victims of today. From my research into the organizers, other international artists who are participating and into Haiti itself, my sense is that this event is a new step toward redefining the nature and structure of the biennale from meaningless investment frenzy into meaningful cultural event. Below please find my proposal for inclusion into the exhibition and also links to the event site and my fundraising page. As this is a brand new and totally radical experiment in cultural cross pollination there is no internal funding from the organizers to help the artists get to Haiti, live and eat while there or produce any work. As such I have begun the necessary fundraising drive for myself to get there and live safely while there. I need to spread the word to people that might be interested in helping fund this sort of knowledge building venture. Please take a minute to look over the links and spread the word to folks you think might be interested. Thanks so much! Links: fundraising platform http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/danholepond/the-1st-ghetto-biennale-in-port-au-prince-haiti event main site http://ghettobiennale.com/ Proposal: Rob Peterson *The Apprenticeship System* Firsthand accounts of the apprenticeship system and the Grand Rue artists? relationship to materials are at the core of this project. Thanks so much again for helping me spread the word. Following several steps taken by the Conseil qu?b?cois de la musique (CQM) during the past two weeks, the CQM was invited to testify the importance of these two grants programmes at a parliamentary session in Ottawa around October 22. Message-ID: <366000.6366.qm@web83605.mail.sp1.yahoo.com> 20 years ago, October 16th, 1989, my wife and I signed a lease on a small retail space in the Lower Haight of San Francisco. This was to become our brand new experiment - Kaleidoscope Records - a record store dedicated primarily to Indie and Do-It-Yourself artists and releases focusing on experimental, industrial, and ambient/soundart music. Almost 24 hours after signing the lease on the property the Loma Prieta earthquake rocked the sands of San Francisco and our uninsured our new locale held up - untouched - unaffected - and ready for the future onslaught and a name change from Kaleidoscope Records to Auricular Records. It was not long before Auricular Records started to produce the Auricular Audio Magazine, a frequent cassette compilation notorious for its ambitious packaging as much as for its obscure musical contributions from around the world. The DIY cassette label slowly evolved to release a small handful of individual artists in addition to the compilations and they became a networked family of friends and partners in a growing movement of experimental/industrial/noise music. Many brilliant performances, visiting artists, duped cassettes, odd packaging designs and CD burns later we now celebrate our 20th year! In that 20 years almost 120 artists have graced our little label! (http://www.auricular.com/auricular2/artists.shtml) I want to take this moment to thank everyone - new friends and old friends - anyone at all who contributed to our many years of bringing difficult music to the world and a big thanks to all the artists, friends, family (related and adopted), and of course all those noises big and small, discovered and uncovered and yet to be unearthed...this is a birthday for all of us! Happy 20th Everyone! We have some very special plans for the coming 20th year and will keep you all informed! http://www.auricular.com http://www.ambitdin.com From murmer at murmerings.com Sat Oct 17 12:29:12 2009 From: murmer at murmerings.com (. m u r m e r .) Please see below for more details and reserve your place in this fantastic, ear-opening workshop now!!! Description of the workshop from Patrick McGinley: revenant:sound In this one-day workshop we will explore sound as a transmitter of nonverbal information. We will focus on sound?s ability to define/describe space, and on our ability to resonate, alter, or create space by using sound. ?revenant:sound? is a project that focuses on improvised sonic activities in site specific locations. Voices are given to these spaces by producing sound using only objects found in-situ and the space itself. Participants will focus on a development of attentive listening and the ability to successfully participate in group explorations, while learning to find sonic potentials in everyday materials. Revenant derives its name from a concept of spatial memory, or, more specifically, from the long-term gestural memory of space; the ability of a location to retain an imprint or trace of activity or energy that has been present therein. Participants are asked to bring one (non-musical) object from their living space, whose sonic potentials we will explore as a group. "Most people thought of David Newman's autistici-release "Volume Objects" on 12k as his first full-length. Brimful of ideas, epic and demanding, constantly evolving and infinitely ambitious, it surely had the typical traits of a debut: Newman's ambient acoustic worlds were inhabited by myriads of sound creatures and sonic plants entwining themselves around a laserbeam-like pillar of creativity. In reality, these both powerful and peculiar pieces were the results of years spent refining a distinct style through a plethora of net-releases. In a sense, however, "Volume Objects" did constitute a fresh beginning for autistici. Not only was Newman devoting more and more time to building his Audiobulb imprint into one of the more eclectic and forwardthinking outfits on the electronica-scene. He was also turning more towards minutely designed physical products. This tendency continues with his latest record, "Complex Tone Test" on keshhhhhh Records, which again comes accompanied by striking cover art. It also shows that Newman has no intention of simply repeating the promising formula of "Volume Objects". Rather, "Complex Tone Test" has turned out a concept work of sorts, researching the information processing capacities of the human mind. What sounds like a scientific experiment onpaper has, in fact, turned into an emotionally charged album which never quite sounds the same. About time we spoke to David to find out more...." (shipping december, 2009)* ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *25.10.09 *this edition of framework:afield has been produced in udine, italy by giancarlo toniutti. for more information you can see his website (still under construction) at http://www.quasi-rn.org. giancarlo has this to say about his show: *khoe dullin?ng rungs sh?ts* /(he told a story while walking)/ This radio work has been conceived as an ambient form of narration. The idea was to take the recorder with me, while walking late at night through different environments. Mostly habitual environments. But while nightwalking I discovered more interesting "location" sounds, than anything else, and turned the project into a resonance-oriented gathering of different specific local events, bounded by a narrative structure. These "local" events had to do with three main categories of sonic phenomena: ambiences, electric hums, resonances. And several times these categories evidently overlap. Hence all sounds are "natural" sounds. Therefore the old question is: what is "natural"? And natural in comparison/opposition to what? Unnatural? Artificial? Cultural? In effect, all phenomena you can hear in this work are properly as they presented themselves in their environment (editing has been the only technique employed in composition). Yet they derive from the interaction of the "local events" (the resonant materials) with the microphone system. If what we hear is a "natural sound", and a "natural sound" is what we hear, there is a paradox here, because actually many of these sounds wouldn't be usually heard in normal conditions; sometimes masked by louder sounds, other times they simply pass unnoticed and mingled as background, or they only stem from the interaction between a resonant material and the microphone. Of course, several of these sounds could be labelled as "anthropic" phenomena, but phenomena mostly not aimed at the generation of any acoustics, which results as a by-product of the main goal of the system in action. Thus we are confronted with a new question: are all sounds cultural? Because we define them (by hearing, and then recording, selecting, editing and framing and listening to). But mostly because we decide to define them, give them a name, a source, a "representation". Even, when we do this, we separate them from their background, thus applying a certain (acoustic) meaning to them as local forms, and consequently by forming categories, and filling them. And in the end coming to something like the "natural" vs. "cultural" opposition. And yet, the background itself is not inert. All recordings are from my home town, Udine, and mostly from my own surroundings, mainly gathered late at night. All sounds are generated within (or captured by) the interaction/relationship between "natural" acoustics of diverse kinds, with a hidden resonant character, and the microphone system. Small sonic microclimates, "naturally" resonating (due to many reasons, including wind, mechanic vibrations, and the interaction between systems). As said, as a radio work, it tries to "exploit" the medium in its possibilities and probabilities, and in its intrinsic narrative nature, as I see it, not necessarily linear, but nevertheless consistent. Sources: environmental sounds (steps, cars, dogs, pavement, bicycle, crickets, doors, barriers, hooters, airplane, rings, wind, voices, manhole covers, bats, crockery, motorbikes, shutters, trapdoors, trains, raindrops, bus, rubble, level-crossings, birds, leaves, brakes, metal chains), resonances from various metallic structures (gates, grating, fences, handrail, wires, bicycle racks), drones from air conditioning stations, a pedestrian wooden bridge, the town water channels, a large city fountain, a theatre outdoor hall, the microphonic systems, several electric hums from streetlights and UPS street stations, a stone wall. Equipment: portable dat recorder, condenser microphones (80%), self-built contact microphones (20%). No analogic or digital treatment (no eq). Digitally edited. Recorded 23-31 may 2009, in Udine, Italy. Composed and mixed down 1-14 june 2009 in 'the black room', Udine. Zeitgleich werden die Kl?nge durch mitschwingende Objekte auf den Lautsprechern und auf mehreren, dem Alltag entnommenen Resonanzk?rpern moduliert. Gregory B?ttner plays electric-acoustic music using different external speakers. At the same time these sounds are modulated by resonating objects placed on the speakers and by several, in everyday life used resonance bodies. With my development of the computer as a working tool in 1999 I began to work with audio information besides the visual ones. The computer provides the possibility to cut up noises, sounds and music, to analyse them and work with these fragments. I am especially interested in the conditions, under which they come into being, in which context they exist and what kind of effect they have got on the audience. My work begins with finding, searching or producing of acoustic material. By experimenting with the material I get various fragments, which are later combined in a composition. The composition is created in interaction with the structure of the noises and sounds. Interaction is meant as anadaptation of the composition to the structure (dynamics, timbre, pitch, tune) of the sounds and noises or the other way round the sounds are changed for compositional reasons. In my visual work I use the same method. Mostly I work with found pictures http://www.gregorybuettner.de http://www.1000fussler.com *duo Contour: * /22 S?chelschen J?rg Frey (CH), dedekind duos Antoine Beuger (NL/D)/ /duo Contour/ pr?sentiert 2 Komponisten aus dem /Wandelweiser Kollectiv/, welche ebenfalls auf Ihrer neu aufgenommenen CD zu h?ren sind. duo Contour present 2 composers from Wandelweiser Kollectiv who are also to be heard on their latest release. Oliver Peter alias Evapori deals with the electric-acoustic processing of classical instruments and found objects which function as sound sources, being assembled with the computer and solidified on stage by means of other sources such as tapes, electronics or microphones. *Biografie* /Oliver Peters/, geboren 1970, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Since the early 90s he has worked with electronic music and since 2002 has performed as EVAPORI with releases on AIC, Walter Ulbricht Schallfolien, 1000f?ssler, Entracte. His compositions are mostly based on concrete sound sources: field recordings, transformation of found footage and the use of self-made sound objects or classical instruments such as piano or cello. Together with Nicolas Wiese [-HYPH-] Peters founded the Label AIC. Since 2006 he has, amongst other projects, set music to the scientific film "E2250" which was shown at short film festivals in Hamburg and in Darmstadt in the category "Modern Music in the Context of Technology". The piece exists of a statically constant audiosignal that is played -- in the beginning quietly -- in the course of the piece with continuously increasing volume. As soon as the capacity of the speakers is exceeded by the output power of the amplifier, distortions arise and at last the speaker drops out. For the audiosignal is already overamplified, the listener is confronted with two different kinds of distortion: an arranged, "harmless" one with no material damage, and an immediate one. *Biografie * Geboren 1975 in Varna, Bulgarien. *Biografie* Das duo Contour gr?ndete sich 1998 bei den Darmst?dter Sommerkursen f?r neue Musik.
