Soft spoken and gentle 'Small Conversations' embodies all that ambient music is meant to be through perfectly crafted music of delicate beauty. The workshop will give you the opportunity to create your own software sound synthesiser and different chat bots that will be used to manipulate and turn your chat into a music score. To achieve this, we will use free software such as Python, Supercollider, Puredyne, Emacs and more! The workshop is aimed at participants with basic experience in programming, scripting, or markup languages, even if it's just (X)HTML/CSS. You do not have to be an experienced programmer, but if you are, that's good too. As long as you are not afraid to work in a terminal, you'll be fine! In general, we are looking for people who have already experienced the "culture shock" of using plain text to describe a process and want to take this further or discover creative programming using free software. The workshop will be adapted to the participants' experience and profiles, but do not hesitate to contact us for extra details or if you are not sure you will fit. You will go home with the software and code you wrote during the workshop, and encouraged to share it and develop it further! -- GOTO10 are a collective of international artists and programmers, dedicated to Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS) and digital arts. Email frances.bossom at arnolfini.org.uk with your applications. Places will be allocated on the basis of the strength of the case you make to take part. DEADLINE: 16 November. Notification of outcome: 21 November. At the end of the workshop, everything will be left on site in the gallery and available online as part of the Craftivism exhibition at Arnolfini (12 December 2009 - 14 February 2010). http://www.craftivism.net -- :* From ondasonoraradio at yahoo.es Sun Nov 1 20:13:14 2009 From: ondasonoraradio at yahoo.es (Onda Sonora Radio) Date: Mon, 2 Nov 2009 01:13:14 +0000 (GMT) Subject: [microsound-announce] Contents Onda Sonora Radio 31-10-09 Message-ID: <377050.59873.qm@web25605.mail.ukl.yahoo.com> ONDA SONORA (Experimental Radio Sessions), Madrid (ES)O ?Radio C?rculo de Bellas Artes 100.4 FM Saturdays. 01h. www. circulobellasar tes.com www. ondasonoraradio .com? Literally thousands of music lovers spend hours listening to reactive, algorithmic, generative new music generated in realtime on their little mobile computers. Even musicians like Carl Craig dive into the RjDj world by now. The music of RjDj is composed with Pure Data as the RjDj composition software. It's pretty cool to know that Pd patches are enjoyed by people around the world in Europe, the States, Japan, wherever. We @ Reality Jockey felt like it would be beneficial to create a place where the experience and creation of reactive music could be discussed, both in relation to RjDj and beyond - so we have created a reactive music forum for just that. So there it is: We're pleased to announce the opening of the "RjDj Reactive Music Forum": http://more.rjdj.me/forum/ New Scenes available ==================== In not totally unrelated news we also have many new Scenes available on rjdj.me, most of them free as in beer or even speech. There is stuff from Japan: http://more.rjdj.me/2009/11/03/new-scenes-from-japan/ where RjDj is becoming big as Natto, or half a dozen new Scenes by Pd experts like Martin Brinkmann: http://more.rjdj.me/2009/10/15/half-a-dozen-new-scenes/ All this is Pd vanilla btw. :) And of course your music could be a part of the reactive music experience as well. Just read http://more.rjdj.me/composer/ to see what changes you may have to make to your existing Pd patch to tranform it into a scene for RjDj - and then how to upload it to rjdj.me. Maybe your scene will be the next big thing? New and experienced users of Ardour are invited to "learn by documenting" during this combination workshop and book sprint. A book sprint brings together a group of writers, editors and artists to go from an outline to a published book in just five days. We will use this format to give workshop participants tasks which they will learn to complete in Ardour, and which they will then document for the Ardour FLOSS Manual. This is an exciting opportunity both to acquire new skills as well as share them with others in the form of a book! The workshop will be split into two sessions: an evening session focusing on learning the software and creating chapters for the FLOSS Manual, and an afternoon session focusing on editing, proofreading and correcting the workshop texts. At the end of the week, we hope to have a beginner's manual covering these and other topics: Introduction: What is Ardour? Being a designer and composer myself I was interested to see to what extent both the theatre and the experimental music disciplines used field recordings so I could compare this to my own work. Cities of Sound is a sonic exploration of the field recordings I have managed to collect over the past few years from different places and countries I have visited. I was very interested in bringing all the sounds together to produce an almost immersive soundscape. Something I am very interested in examining at the moment is the relationship that field recordings can have in different places within musical composition. I have some extracts to play of an interview I conducted with Steve Brown who is a theatre sound designer at the royal exchange theatre in Manchester, Steve is also head of sound at the international organisation OISTAT. I am also going to play an interview conducted with Ewan Stefani who is a lecturer at Leeds University and an electroacoustic and acousmatic composer. One of the main aspects I set out to achieve by conducting interviews between a theatre sound designer and electroacoustic composer was to see whether there were any similarities in the way that they used field recordings in their work Ewan and Steve are both responding to questions I have asked them throughout my interview with them and at the end are responding directly to my question of where is sound design and electroacoustic music going in the future and are there any similarities to their respected fields to one another's. Comparing the work produced by Ewan and Steve to my own work I can see many similarities in the way of style and format. To me the discipline of being an electroacoustic, acousmatic or experimental composer doesn't differ or vary much to the work I carry out to a sound designer. I use field recordings quite heavily in my work whether design related or composition related. They have become more and more frequent over the years and now feature quite dominantly in my work. I am very interested in organic field recordings and in the association sound can have with space and location. My recent work has developed into more site specific exhibition and installations. Working as both a composer and sound designer I am very interested in examining the connections between the two disciplines and how a composer might see him or herself as a designer when using fields recordings and sound in an experimental way and how a sound designer might relate to themselves as a composer because of the way they are structuring and composing a musical piece. I have recently been involved in composing and producing a piece titled Memories Unearthed which was an outdoor sound installation at a country park in Salford, Manchester. Memories Unearthed is an experimental soundscape which was produced by using various field recordings that were taking from the park in Salford and fused alongside various recordings I have produced and reproduced that would have been associated with a colliery that was once based in the area, namely the Wet Earth Colliery. The installation was produced for an event titled Dirt and Dreams which commemorated the work of those that worked in the mining industry. The environmental field recordings specifically heard at the beginning and end of the piece were produced with the help of local children and families that came along to a workshop that was run in the park and involved them participating in a soundwalk around the area. Recordings were made and I tried to incorporate as many as possible into the piece." again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! framework tartu mnt 41 63710 ahja polvamaa estonia info at frameworkradio.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *(title / time)* /Cities of Sound/ 0:00-10:45 composed & produced by Karen Lauke for installation at Wolstenholme Projects, Liverpool Introduction to the programme by Karen Lauke and the people that were kind enough to be interviewed ? After working at UC Santa Barbara, designing experimental software instruments with Curtis Roads, he taught at Media Arts Academy Cologne, the Institute for Electronic Music in Graz, and at TU Berlin. He held a professorship for Music Informatics at Music University Duesseldorf, and currently is Professor for Generative Art at Arts Univ. Berlin. He plays with powerbooks_unplugged (just in time programming on mostly unamplified laptops); improvisation groups with acoustic instruments such as Quiet Noise Quartet, Syntopia Ensemble, and ad hoc constellations; electronic music with BlippooHazard (four musicians playing the Blippoo Box, a hardware synth by Rob Hordijk). Recent projects include creating software instruments and sound installations with Florian Hecker, e.g. 'No Night No Day' at Biennale Venice, and AuditoryObjects (Bordeaux), and collaborating with Marcus Schmickler and Carsten Goertz on "Bonner Durchmusterung", a project involving sonification und visualisation of atronomical data. DJ Sniff (JP) from steim/Amsterdam - Experimental Turntablist believes in the instrumental autonomy of the turntable and the musicianship of the DJ. He is a turntable musician working in the field of improvised and experimental music. His music focuses on the live reconstruction and narratization of the phonographically amplified - the music, the sound, the technology and the past. To achieve this, he uses a unique setup consisting of hand-made hardware interfaces and a custom Max/MSP software along with one turntable and DJ mixer. He is also a concert/event curator for electronic music and a researcher of music technology. Since 2005 he has been involved with STEIM's (Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music, Amsterdam) R&D lab. From 2007 on, he is STEIM's Artistic Director, curating public events and representing the institution through performances and lectures. dj sniff regularly performs with computer musician Yutaka Makino as Audile and with saxophonist Keir Neuringer and Bassist Raed Yassin. http://djsniff.com/ EVOL (ES) from Barcelona - Extreme Computer Music Cell EVOL is a computer music cell started in Barcelona in 1996. Their work has been released on internationally acclaimed record labels such as Mego, Entr'acte, Lucky Kitchen, Diskono, Scarcelight, Antifrost, fals.ch or their own ALKU. In 2003 the group started a series of electroacoustic pieces entitled 'Punani' which addresses some of the main aspects of their work, namely: algorithmic composition, noise, psychedelia, system trajectories and the musical application of fractal geometry and other mathematical phenomena, somewhere in between Denis Smalley's concept of "spectromorphology", black magic and what Agostino Di Scipio called "functional iteration synthesis". Recently they have released 'Punani Xerrameca', a 10" on ALKU, and 'Fart Synthesis' a cassette on Presto!? http://vivapunani.org/ Kaffe Matthews (UK) from London - 8 Multichannel Performance Kaffe Matthews was born in Essex, England, and lives and works in London. Since 1996 she has been making new electro-acoustic music through a system of self designed software matrices through which she pulls and pushes different sounds live. The variety of sounds, things and places she has worked with have ranged from self played violin and theremin, sounds of spaces, kite strings on an uninhabited Scottish Island, flight data from NASA scientists, Scottish and Irish pipers, melting ice in Quebec, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, vibrating wires in the West Australian outback and recently a Vietnamese monochord and seaside sounds processed with 11 year olds to be dispersed by visitor pedalled bicycles. She has just returned from a month of working with sharks and conservation scientists on the Galapagos Islands. http://www.kaffematthews.net/ Suk-Jun Kim (KR) Berlin - Imaginary Electroacoustic Music A Korean Composer whose main output is electroacoustic music, Suk-Jun Kim?s music focuses mainly on the sense of places that are fantastic, imaginary, magical, and realistic, where listeners can visit, stop by, and dwell on. His music has received a number of international awards: M?tamorphoses (2000 & 2008), Regional Composition Prize at 2008 ICMC in Belfast, CIMESP (2007), Bourges (2001), ASCAP/SEAMUS Student Commission Competition (2001) as well as mentions and finalists in MUSICA VIVA (2005) and MUSICA NOVA (2002 & 2005). He now lives in Berlin as an Aritist-in-Residence composer at DAAD. His research concentrates on listening and imagining in electroacoustic music and a framework based on ?acousmatic reasoning,? a listening process using both spectromorphological and semiotic listening modes, which listeners of electroacoustic music employ to ?make sense? out of the acousmatic experiences. On November 18th, hundreds of union members and students from all over California will converge on UCLA in the leadup to the system-wide protest of the Regents meeting. With the support of union and student groups, there will be a day and night Tent City outside of Pauley Pavillion to house our convergence! Therfore, the students of UCLA have created the CRISIS FEST: A radical space at Tent City to respond to the crisis with new ideas, experiences, anger and joy. We recognize the broader issues shaping the crisis: privatization, and the economic downturn, the resegregation of the university and the ongoing wars abroad. But we don't want boring colloquiums or lectures: for one night we run our education as self-education; we protest with fun and festivity! There will be music, food, workshops and communal spirits in store for everyone. And we want your help! From 5pm until (at least) Midnight, we want to fill UCLA with your music, poetry & spoken word, discussions, dance, visuals, videos, d.i.y. workshops, and literature, in addition to what we've already set up (and the list will only get longer). We have discussions of the international student movement, dodgeball & frisbee matches, mass camping on campus (bring your own tent!), screen printing workshops, banner & art making, rock & traditional Mexican music and a General Assembly to discuss the future of the movement. It also looks at reshaping and replicating the body through the use of noise, DIY technology and stroboscopic light. This work uses DIY hardware to build a new interface for live computer music performance, aiming to turn the performers body into an instrument allowing them to embody new technologies and electronic devices. The performance alters the perspective of the performer and performance space through noise, strobe lighting and electronic devices. Flickering shadows of the performers jerking movements, cables, and wires attached to the body are cast onto the walls of the performance space as the performers movements control screaming and shrieking hacked electronics and computer programes, spewing out their internal circuitry. Sunday Mourning Sunday Mourning is Mark Wagner (**k) and drummer Sanna Charles. Together they create a sonic hell-hole of acoustic doom, experimental folk and dense psychedelic atmospheres. Referencing anything from Death metal, Avant Guarde, Country and Americana and taking it down to new claustrophobic depths, Sunday Mourning have just played a headline set at NYC's Coco66 to great success. Gus Garside and Dan Powell Dan Powell & Gus Garside have been working together on an improv project for the last two years. Dan Powell began making sound for installation works in the mid 90's. Since moving to Brighton in 2000 he has concentrated on experimental and improvised music. He is a member of Brighton based collective The Spirit of Gravity and has performed at spaces across the UK. Dan has released work on net labels Hippocamp & Wrong Lab and his work has been played on WFMU, Radio Reverb & BBC Radio 3. His electronic compositions are the expressions of structural possibility using composed algorithms where sound is elastic, non-linear, multi-dimensional, and part of an indivisible whole. As an electro-instrumentalist, he is dedicated to making self-built synthesis software a viable live performance instrument: no editing and no non-realtime operations. A blend of fixed-media composition and electro-instrumentalism -- his is the music of the visceral, ecstatic, and electric moment. His music has been performed at galleries and festivals in Europe and the US such as Pixilerations, NIME, High Zero, Natt Jazz, Gaudeamus Live Electronic Music Festival, Sonic Acts XI, SEAMUS, Ekko Festival, NuMusic, Borealis, The Chelsea Museum, De Appel, Gaudeamus International Music Week, and The Night of the Unexpected. Carey builds custom software instruments for musicians and has given lectures or courses on SuperCollider 3 and/or MKeys at Peabody Conservatory, Princeton, STEIM, Tisch ITP at NYU, BEK, TEKS, NoTAM, and Modulate. He has had artistic residencies at STEIM, Stiftelsen Kulturhuset USF, and Harvestworks. He co-produces DNK Radio for new live electronic music on Dutch Public Radio. His work has received funding from Norsk Kulturr??d Prosjektst??tte, Nederlandse Programma Stichting, DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts. Carey studied Audio Technology at American University (1994) and computer music at the Instituut voor Sonologie in the Koningklijk Conservatorium (2002). The piece had it's inaugural run during 10ms: Perspectives on Microsound at Diapason Gallery in Brooklyn NY last month and has now migrated to Chicago. Please come by if you can! "Chora is a generative meditation on the impermanence of form for projected video and 4 channels of audio, whose inspiration comes from the tectonic activity of the Pacific Ring of Fire. The work puts the viewer at the center of an minimal audio-visual composition that is constantly in motion. Rather than sound and image simply being accompaniments to each other, they are instead projections of a veiled system of forces created by a computer simulation. Through sound and image, the work aims to create for the viewer a liminal space between the virtual and the actual through which the viewer can envision new forms." Message-ID: <801FE34A-D4F2-4132-B0E0-09FEBC4AB062@eartrumpet.org> Hi everyone, our new issue of furthernoise is now up online for your reading and listening pleasure. Furthernoise issue November 2009 http://www.furthernoise.org/index.php?iss=83 "Highs from Low Point" (feature) In this post-everything age, it?s hard to hear anything shatteringly new in the experimental ambient universe, even at the most Out-there reaches of the dronosphere. Yet there's still much to be savoured in the glut of well wrought music in this vein, among which may be numbered recent highs from Nottingham's Low Point. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=311 feature by Alan Lockett "Yapang Marruma Soundscape - Rod Smith" (feature) On February 12th 2008 the Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd made an apology to the 'Indigenous peoples of this land, the oldest continuing cultures in human history' for the 'mistreatment of those who were Stolen Generations [...] for the laws and policies of successive parliaments and governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss [...] 'for the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people and a proud culture. (excerpt). http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=315 feature by Roger Mills "Arturas Bum?teinas - Uniforms" (review) Arturas Bum?teinas is a sound and visual artist based in Lithuania. Uniforms features experimental and post-modern pieces, blended with modern electronic and glitch-based techniques. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=313 review by Alex Young "Echoes of Syros by Dempster, Heasley & Rieman" (review) Stuart Dempster and Tom Heasley have successfully expanded the capabilities of low brass instruments, once relegated to the back of the band. Together with keyboard player Erik Glick Rieman, they present a series of improvisations that exceed the boundaries of their previous work and highlight potential future explorations. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=312 review by Caleb Deupree "Peaceful Protest - Sade Sade" (review) ?D? Yellow Swans called it quits April 2008. In their 9 years together, this psych/noise duo consisting of Pete Swanson and Gabriel Mindle Saloman (GMS) recorded over 50 releases, toured extensively around the World, and co-ran the Collective JYRK label/art collective. Gabriel ended up moving to Vancouver, BC to start a new label called Diadem Discogs with his wife and music collaborator Aja Rose. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=314 review by Derek Morton "The sincerest form of derivation" (review) Remora's Derivative is a guitar ambient album with a more aggressive edge than other drone guitar groups like Stars of the Lid or Mirror, retaining enough skronk to remove any artificial polish and give the work the immediacy of a laid-back live performance in his living room, and enough melodicism to prevent the work from becoming a noise fest. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=309 review by Caleb Deupree Roger Mills Editor, Furthernoise to unsubscribe please go to http://www.furthernoise.org/unsubscribe.php?u=1&ID=4 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... His first major release, Volume Objects, appeared on Taylor Deupree's 12K last year, but, prior to this, Newman had released a handful of EPs on small labels, and his music had also been featured on a number of compilations. On his debut album, Newman crafted his soundscapes, built from both treated acoustic sound sources and purely electronic components, with delicate impressionist touches, weaving them into beautiful evocative pieces. With Complex Tone Test, released on Cambridge-based Keshhhhhh Recordings, Newman manipulates electro-acoustic textures once again, weaving them into vast ethereal formations which often appear pretty static and monolithic, yet constantly morph and evolve, their course altered ever so slightly over their lifespan. This is very much the case with the more minimal pieces found here. The fluid drone structures of Refractory or Meadow Bed are extremely bare and gossamer, but are animated by a momentum deep within their respective sonic fabric which gives them a particular sheen, while the ampler La Spaziale S1 Vivaldi at times seems to echo in all sorts of directions at once. This time round though, Newman pushes purely electronic components much more forward and deploys an arsenal of clicks and glitches to give tracks such as Meticule, Resonating Wire, Closing or Annualized Light (2.2) a totally different outline. The result is particularly impressive on Resonating Wire and Annualized Light (2.2), which, despite pretty desolate backdrops, are given strong relief with just a few additional noises, while the glitches heard toward the beginning of Meticule progressively gather into a fully-formed rhythmic pulse later on. Elsewhere, Newman brings richer patterns to his electro-acoustic formations. The mellotron-fuelled Key For A Lockable Cabinet is a particularly vibrant and pastoral piece, while later, the more complex layering of real instruments and electronics on Disintegrated Interest pushes the record in a much more challenging direction for a moment. Stepping in the limelight once again as Autistici, David Newman has created with Complex Tone Test, a record that takes the space defined by its predecessor and expands it greatly, without altering its very essence in the slightest. The result is particularly convincing, ensuring Autistici's place amongst the more imaginative musicians of his generation. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... He leaves no one cold. He could be the next genius the right-thinking avant-garde will be late to discover. He is Rothkamm, but his friends call him Frank Rothkamm. This composer, philosopher, and conceptual artist can turn music (electronic and otherwise) into thought territory, an abstract playground, or even a smoke screen. In fact, Rothkamm is a magician, a prestidigitation theoretician, and a carny all in one. The oeuvre he is building one CD at a time seems to be designed to sidetrack listeners (and better push them onward), deconstruct accepted ideas (and better reinvent them), and elevate contradiction to the rank of art form (so as to better critique it). After all, this is the man behind an electronic trilogy that introduced a new and serious music theory peppered with kitsch elements (the FB series), a record of microtonal pieces for parlor organ (one piece bearing the exquisite title "Kris Kristofferson of the Avant-Garde"), a set of piano variations on the first ten notes from the "Spongebob Squarepants" theme song (Opus Spongebobicum), and a digital cantata masquerading as dance music. So what about ALT? Don't be surprised to be surprised: this particular album features quite accessible ambient electronic music. This work is less microtonal than Rothkamm's previous similar pieces, more immersive, but just as fascinating. Its simple - or even harmless - appearance imbues the approach issue with extra urgency. Rothkamm: "On ALT I have set up iterative procedures on physical machines (as opposed to a linear process in software). Once the process is in motion, no or minimal intervention takes place. Each piece on ALT has the same premise: to create an infinity machine, a deus ex machina, to experience an infinite process in a finite amount of time." On its own, this Rothkamm CD can be appreciated openly, and fans of Scanner and Biosphere will take a shine to it. Taken in the context of the artist's oeuvre, it embodies yet another enigma (amplified by the symbolic and numerological games found in the track titles and durations). For that, ALT makes an excellent introduction to the Rothkammian mystery. ALT is out now on Baskaru. www.baskaru.com From Philippe-Petit at wanadoo.fr Sat Nov 21 11:35:57 2009 From: Philippe-Petit at wanadoo.fr (Philippe-Petit) Date: Sat, 21 Nov 2009 17:35:57 +0100 Subject: [microsound-announce] tomorrow my radio show Message-ID: <4BE5820E-ED9A-4A8D-BEFA-FE5311F9F5E8@wanadoo.fr> BiP_HOp Generation on Radio Grenouille // 88.8 FM Sunday evenings : 20:00 - 21:00 PM (19:00 - 20:00 GMT) // Marseille // France http://ns35904.ovh.net:8080/live.m3u ARTIST : SONG "ALBUM" (label) Von Magnet : light tread ? The main focus is now the creator, the laptop user, his problems, his questions and why not, his ambitions! This edition will consist of a one-day symposium with 16 musicians, followed by a day of performances. All the 16 guests have in common their extended use of the laptop in a real time performance context. The group will make a collective performance ?16 laptops (12 on sound and 4 on visuals) followed by a solo laptop from one of the most recognized electronic activists: Robin Rimbaud, aka Scanner. (shipping december, 2009)* ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *22.11.09 *this edition of framework:afield was produced in the uk by regular series contributor felicity ford, and features a framework-specific mix and edit from her radio series the fantastical reality radio show. felicity says: The Fantastical Reality Radio Show in association with Mundane Appreciation was commissioned by RadioReverb as part of the Sonic Arts Network Expo 2008. It was originally hosted in Brighton by Earshot and aired on Radio Reverb during the Summer of 2008. All 5 shows can be downloaded in their entirety from the show's website at http://www.fantasticalreality.com/home.html The show was the concept of Felicity Ford, Kayla Bell and Claudia Figueiredo. Aiming to draw listeners in to an entertaining exploration of ordinary audio, The Fantastical Reality Radio Show in association with Mundane Appreciation was based on using the immediate situation or vicinity as a basis for artmaking, and was intended to celebrate and draw attention to the sounds we hear all the time. All the sounds were recorded by Felicity Ford, Kayla Bell and Claudia Figueiredo, and friends of Kayla Bell make guest appearances in many of the show's popular jingles! The Fantastical Reality Radio Show appropriated the format of a mainstream radio show and populated it with unexpected content. Adopting a fast-paced, OTT, jingle-tastic approach, the show was filled with gameshows and features all focussed around the appreciation of everyday sounds. Felicity Ford is currently undertaking a PhD in The Domestic Soundscape and presenting everyday sounds to audiences, while Kayla Bell and Claudia Figeuiredo continue to collaborate on their ongoing project, Mundane Appreciation. This special edition of The Fantastical Reality Radio Show in association with Mundane Appreciation has been put together for Framework from the archives used to make the original 5 shows. There are some longer edits here and much of the voiceover that was used to connect up the features in the original shows has been removed, to make way for the features, the games, and - most importantly, the sounds - that made up that series. However, the fun approach, fast-pace and celebratory atmosphere have been retained for the listening pleasure of all Framework listeners! Brian Eno & Elliott Sharp For three days, China Express will immerse you in *China?s musical undercurrent*. Because the underground music scene that lies behind The Great Wall has more similarities to Western music than we think. China Express offers you *a look at counterculture in the Beijing metropolis, a flourishing breeding ground for unique, groundbreaking and continuously evolving artists.* Vooruit will join East and West with *three theme evenings* featuring short but powerful concerts. But we have to admit organizing the festival it hasn?t been easy, as *many of the featured musicians are simply boycotted by the Chinese authorities*. Their songs are not played on Chinese radio, and opportunities to see them live in Europe are very limited. Vooruit has also set up a few collaborations with local music talent for a meeting of cultures. China Express has not only gathered accomplished players of the *guqin and guzheng *(i.e. *traditional Chinese zithers*), but also *guitar virtuosos, voice artists and musicians hailing from genres such as noise, avant-garde and electronica*, inspired by Aphex Twin or Alec Empire. Some of them have their own label, others have worked with Einst?rzende Neubauten, Sonic Youth orJohn Zorn. They?re all different in their own way, thrilling and unheard. My interests have led me to explore acoustics, psychoacoustics, binaural beats and diverse methods of recording sound, and the application of systems and strategies, which have served as the fundamental departure towards achieving my work." (Richard Garet) Four Malleable is comprised of what are among Richard's best compositions from four different years: Imaginative Elements (2004), From Modified Tapes (2005), Sceneries (2006), and Nocturne (2009). Four previously unreleased works that place the mind's eye inside malleable forms and blurred locations. As is the tendency of a/O to often draw comparisons to the world of cinema (as explained on the FAQ page of the website when explaining the ?conceptuals? behind the a/O name), this release at times recalls the well known scene in Michelangelo Antonioni's "Deserto Rosso" where actress Monica Vitti watches as her friends slowly fade into the hazy distance without anyone actually moving. While this connection was not intentional on the part of Richard, it is quite pertinent to a/O since he is to have a track featured as part of the upcoming CD project entitled "Michelangelo Antonioni ? Trilogy & Epilogue" which casts its conceptual lens on Antonioni's 'tetralogy' of films which includes "Deserto Rosso". It was partially because of hearing the works later featured on Four Malleable (among other works) that Richard was invited to participate in the project. Richard has had previous work published by Non Visual Objects, Winds Measure Recordings, Unframed, White_Line Editions and Leerraum. Jeremy has also provided Technical artistic work for Matt Lewis' Helicopter, as shown at the London Brazilian Embassy, as well as functional installation work for the Tate Britain. His current line of exploration involves the development of new strategies in the fields of live electronics performance, studio practice, and sound based generative artworks. He is a current Mphil/Phd candidate at Goldsmiths College, London. He is of no (known) relation to the anthropologist of the same name. Myrto Karanika: Practising artist / architect Myrto studied Architecture & Engineering in Greece before moving to London to do a MA in Creative Practice for Narrative Environments at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, University of the Arts. She holds a MFA in Computational Studio Arts from Goldsmiths University of London. Her practice and research transgresses the boundaries of art, architecture, responsive design, soft technologies, and electronic textiles, aiming to explore concepts of spatiality, narrativity, hapticity and bodily engagement. Myrto's work has been exhibited in different public contexts such as the ?New Trends in Architecture in Europe and Asia Pacific? International Architectural Exhibition 2006, the 8th International Festival of Architecture & Media 2005, the 5th Pan-Hellenic Exhibition of Architecture 2006, the 2009 AISB Symposium on Mental States, Emotions and their Embodiment, the 2009 EVA London, the Foundry (London 2009), the Horse Hospital (London, 2009), the Ventipertrenta 2009 Festival (Italy, 2009) and the Goldsmiths Digital Studios Thursday Club for which she has been a Board Member since 2008. GRAYSON COOKE and MIKE COOPER www.youtube.com/civilizedmachine http://web.mac.com/cooparia Grayson Cooke is an interdisciplinary scholar and live-media artist. Grayson has performed live audio-visual works in Australia and New Zealand, he has exhibited works of new media and photography in Australia and Canada, and he has published academic articles in numerous print and online journals. He holds an interdisciplinary PhD from Concordia University in Montreal, and lectures in digital media at Central Queensland University. Mike Cooper (Phantom Islands by Tam Patton) ?There are islands that have been believed to exist, islands which have appeared on maps and have even had expeditions mounted to locate or conquer them, yet they have still evaded our observation. Some are eventually established as imaginary; daemonic. Others are seen only on old maps and charts, disappearing in more modern depictions, dismissed as mistakes. Others still are unsuccessfully sought for decades, and dismissed as fanciful or mythic, and then embarrassingly found in plain view, under another, more familiar name. Mike Cooper is perhaps one of these islands. Born in England in 1942, his 40-plus years of constant re-invention, experimentation and quiet genius in a myriad of musical styles has evaded categorization, perhaps as a side-effect of having been almost completely ignored by history. Encompassing Blues, Folk, Roots music, Electronica, Jazz, Exotica / Lounge, Dance, Noise, Modern Composition or Improvisation (amongst others), Cooper?s expansive remit blasts orthodox categorization into the befuddled librarian?s realm where it belongs.? Now Wash Your Hands "OCD power electronics from the north of England" http://www.myspace.com/washyourhandsnow Nathan Nothing was failing at music so he decided the only option left was to take up noise. He also wanted an outlet for his grumpy foul tempers and to humiliate himself onstage for others' amusement wearing special costumes. There is nothing more important than being clean and nothing cleans the head out better than a healthy blast of noise! (Always wash your hands)." CANE TOAD ORCHESTRA http://www.doowta.org/canetoad/canetoad.html it starts with a droned note. jag plays a musical mode with the droned note as the tonic. rob_a's variseq takes the audio output of din, the droned note and geri's violin playing and turns them into rhythms. geri adds her own melodic line on the violin by responding both to jag and rob_a's sounds. and we all listen and respond to each other. THOR MAGNUSSON http://www.ixi-audio.net/ Thor is a musician and an inventor who researches the impact of digital technologies on musical creativity and practices. In 2000, he co-founded the ixi Audio collective, which won the Lomus 2008 International Music Software Contest for their ixiQuarks software. Thor has presented and performed in various festivals and conferences, such as Sonar festival, Ertz festival, Transmediale, ICMC (International Computer Music Conference), NIME Conference (New Interfaces for Musical Expression), Impact Festival, Soundwaves festival, Cybersonic festival, Ultrasound festival, Pixelache, and various others. THE DIGITARIAT http://www.myspace.com/digitariat At the end of the 90s noise/experimental project Dachise ended and The Digitariat took its place. Though the central figure of the both acts are the same, Paul Knowles, the very names of the projects show the shift in perspective from abstract experimentalism (Dachise was an anagram) to a more focused animal who brings together the personal and the macrocosmic. Vicious electronic snapping, cracking and drilling accompany heavily treated vocals, a scream from the human trapped in an oppressive repetitive sense-numbing post-industrial world. The individual seeking a more sensual existence than to ?be of service? to faceless others. The Digitariat reclaims electronics from functional convenience and turns them into the instrumentation of passionate slave songs for the new millennium. Live performances are physical and expressive in direct contrast with the behaviour we have learned to adopt in public as one among many urban dwellers. The Digitariat has performed live on the same bills as Prurient, Ramleh, Consumer Electronics, Sudden Infant, Astro, and many more. Limited edition releases have been issued including A Place Beyond Shame 4xCDR set (self released, then reissued in 2009 as a 4xMC set on Symbolic Prod, France), Agitated CD (on Entr?acte in heavily sealed package), the live CDRs: Middlesborough, High Wycombe and Kings Lynn in uniform edition packaging, the Why Men Don?t Have A Clue mp3 half-hour download which was once broadcast in its entirety on Resonance FM? The Digitariat is now working on pieces for more commercial formats including the first vinyl release. BERIT GREINKE http://www.beritgreinke.com/ The sense of hearing might not be the first thought that comes to mind when thinking about textile and surface design. Like many other objects of our aesthetic environment we perceive textiles and patterns primarily visually and tactually. However, there are a lot of shared expressions we naturally use for both the senses of sight and of hearing, including pattern, rhythm and composition. In her projects Berit is investigating cross-sensory experiences using electronic ways to translate from one sense to the other. Berit Greinke is a textile designer graduated from the MA Design for Textile Futures at Central Saint Martins. Before she came to London she studied Textiles and Surface Design at Art School Berlin. Currently she is doing the Surface Bursary at London Printworks Trust, researching about interrelations of printed colours and sounds.
