Jose Miguel Candela. (Santiago, Mayo, 2009) ================================================================================= "Ciclo Electroacustico Salvador Allende Gossens" Electroacustic Concert (Jose Miguel Candela). Sunday May 10 - 2009 20:00 hrs. Galpon Victor Jara, Huerfanos 2146 (Plaza Brasil), Santiago. FREE ADMISION. More info at: http://ciclosag.blogspot.com http://www.pueblonuevo.cl/ciclo-SAG.htm http://www.mus.cl/entrevista.php?fId=163 http://www.candela.scd.cl INTRO / PRESENTATION: "Salvador Allende Gossens" is an electroacoustic cycle I started in 2003. My first impulse was not musical: paying homage to the unique character and legacy of former Chilean president Salvador Allende [1908-1973], whom I deeply admire, and who became a source of inspiration for many important decisions concerning the making of this cycle. I decided to combine semantic and syntactic features from popular music (or from oral tradition music) and electroacoustic music. The former directly influenced instrument choice criteria - instruments herein included are strongly related to popular music, and some idiosyncrasies derived from their ordinary use were also taken into consideration. I also intend to set out a progressive, "democratic" way, moving from man-made instruments (which require a long, thorough professional training in order to be played) towards man as an instrument on his own. This meant a very important personal challenge, which posed questions about the language of music, indeterminacy, and revivification (re-creation?) for each time the work is played and / or performed: is there a "work" before performance?, during the performer's "re-creation"?, during the listener's "re-creation", while hearing it?, all of the above? Electroacoustics, on the other hand, moves from radiophonics (e.g. working with sound documents of the Unidad Popular period) and real- time (or simulated, to be precise) electronic modification of the information generated by the instrument. The result, then, is a mixture of instruments, amplified and developed in their spectromorphology, and in an "intelligent dialog" with themselves, and radiophonics, adding a strong standing point for Salvador Allende's direct legacy. Jose Miguel Candela. (Santiago, May. 2009). ================================================================================= Hasta la proxima, saludos! THANK YOU! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ /*framework*/ - phonography / field recording; contextual and decontextualized sound activity presented by patrick mcginley there was no airing on resonancefm yesterday due to some special programming, so we've arranged an archive show for the podcast and our other stations. the show originally aired more or less one year ago, and was produced in pasadena, california by steve roden for more information see http://www.inbetweennoise.com. steve says: "a strange wonderful sound filled the room, a sort of singing, though accompanied by words, was so supernaturally soft and touching that you could not believe it came from a human throat... " gerhart hauptmann, the fool in christ. for this show, i simply wanted to present some of my favorite 78's. i've included not only songs, but 78's containing fabricated field recordings (nature sounds made by people in a recording studio), and a recent recording of spoken excerpts from gerhart hauptmann's novel "the fool in christ" that describe sounds (kind of a written equivalent of audio field recordings - and an excerpt from a larger text work recording every sound in the book). the songs were chosen because of their relationship to the hauptmann quote above - and each track has singing that for one reason or another, makes me tremble. the weather sounds are pauses - stopping by the side of the road to take in the view - while the text is kind of an architectural structure that frames the older recordings. after selecting the parts, i just allowed things to collide in various ways until it felt right. the order of the songs has a bit of an upwards trajectory - beginning with a john jacob niles rendition of a lullaby (birth/earth), and ending with a song that references the moon. songs were recorded in the usa, japan, turkey, greece, egypt, and others. they explore everything from meditations and prayers, to love and wandering. the players are hillbillies, divas, hawaiian guitarists, gurus, gospel singers, the most famous male indian playback singer, and others. everything, other than the voice reading the text, comes from old worn 78rpm discs. one features weather sounds made with drums, metal, etc., while the other features bird songs made by a man (presumably with his mouth). the scratches, scars, and crackles tend to sound a bit like weather conditions as well (and in one section the sound of rain is completely inaudible beneath the similarly sounding active surface of the record itself.) i've been collecting 78's for years, but i've hardly gathered the caliber of material that would constitute a bonafide record collector's collection. for me, the gathering has become a journey of wander, leading to various destinations of wonder. i don't look for specific artists or genres (although, i have tendencies of course), as much as i kind of bump into things - during weekly 6 am visits to the flea market or late night virtual jaunts online. i generally have little idea of what i'm going to hear until i drop the needle onto the surface of the disc. often enough, a recording will be unbearably dull (what can you expect when purchases are based on a song title, artist name, or disc label art); but when there are surprises, they tend to be good - and once in awhile, mind bending. these are some of the gems. for the geeks, here's pertinent info: john jacob niles: lulle, lullay victor, M604, album: early american ballads (3 discs), 1938 niles' arrangement, played on his own hand made dulcimer mohammed rafi: unknown song (disc label in hindi) columbia, 55403, 1963, india music by madan mohan, from the 1964 film haqeeqat josh white: strange fruit keynote, 542, 1942, usa artist and song name unknown (disc label in japanese) teichiku records, 9534-2, japan dick reinhart : girl i left behind brunswick, B1024, 1947 (recorded earlier), usa from the album (4 discs) american ballads recorded by alan lomax lale hanim: sari sachlarin victor, 26402B, turkey, probably 1930's artist and song name unknown (disc label in japanese) nipponophone - 15549A, probably 1930's omme kolsoum : Afdihi en hafeza victrola, 6-4063A, egypt Josef rosenblatt / leivi rosenblatt: oh god, our king victor, 55163B, usa, probably 1940's sri deva ram sukul: spiritual vibration chant wor recording (probably unique or test pressing), 3-4429, usa healer, president of yoga institute of america, 1930's rifat bey - Hikaz sarki kim arar Sahibinin sesi (hmv), 1224, turkey peace jublee singers, in that city info unknown (i can't find the record in this mess...) greek record, all info unknown once again i've misplaced a 78 and can't find it in this mess... Places are limited to 16. For Workshop leaders Biographies and full description and additional reading go to myspace.com/enka52 Overview--Experimental make-workshop with multilayered outcome for people interested in sound, DIY-biology, microscopy and interaction of living microorganisms. Knowledge in physical computing, video and sound processing, electronics and puredata is welcome, but not compulsary. Description--In this workshop the experiments will take place in close-up view of microorganisms (e.g. water bears aka tardigrades, amoebae and collected organisms from urban environments), which appears to be a world by itself. Maybe due to the scaling and the amplification of a microscope, but maybe also due to all parameters of imagination that the microcosmos provokes. Growth and behaviour of these microscopic animals remind us of our own micro- macro-development. With the image and the movement of the organisms, the participants are encouraged to collect inspiration and bridge video and sound to what they experience with these small ???animalcules???, as termed by their first observer Leeuwenhoek in 1677. The participants will learn: How to work with the usb-microscopes and hack webcams to be used as microscopes, observe the behaviour and motion of the waterbears and other microorganisms, find sounds from the lab equipment, hack into electronic devices to integrate into bioelectronic culture devices and build habitats for the animals. Also they will discover sounds from the different instrumentation and utilities of the laboratory. Recycle and compose arrangements for Lab-visual and Lab-sound scapes and benefit from a cross fertilization between the whole (scientific) equipment (you can bring your own too!) and an artistic metaphorical language. The outcome can be a video with a microscopic soundtrack, a living object with singing waterbears, a performance with laboratory sounds, or an openLab Hackteria installation. Material needed: The participant should bring their own laptop/computer, a webcam with an adjustable lens and some general lab stuff they have access to. Material available: various labware, glassware, petri-dishes, usb-microscopes, microorganisms, soldering stations, electronic parts, arduinos etc.. -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web LIVE ? Run by Noton's Carsten Nicolai (aka Alva Noto) and Olaf Bender (aka Byetone, co-founder of Rastermusic alongside Frank Bretschneider), raster-noton's field of activity expands far beyond that of a traditional record label, encompassing work in design, media art, sound installation, special collaborative projects and sonic research. The label's catalogue of over 100 releases includes works of renowned artists such as Ryoji Ikeda, Ivan Pavlov aka COH, Atom TM, SND, Senking, Mika Vainio (Pan Sonic), Ryuichi Sakamoto, Carl Michael von Hausswolff and newcomers Pixel, NHK, Kangding Ray etc. With a vision that looks well into the future, there is no other imprint like raster-noton in the world today. ALVA NOTO: Carsten Nicolai's sonic experiments under the name ALVA NOTO, navigate the extra-liminal spaces between art and science, idea and physicality. Like his visual art, his music is composed of elements- glitchy crackles, chirps and hypnotic rhythms influenced by house and hip-hop- that form a symbolic meta-language. Navigating the spaces between art and science, order and chaos, Carsten Nicolai has assembled an impressive biography as both a musician and a visual artist. Inspired by ideas of the phenomenology of sight and sound, Nicolai first garnered attention for a series of releases on his own Noton Archiv F?r Ton Und Nichtton label in the early 1990s. At the same time, he gained great respect for his visual art, with solo exhibitions of his work being featured in galleries in Berlin, London and New York, among others. Nicolai has continued to break ground through varied channels, winning both acclaim and awards for his art and collaborating with such luminaries as Ryoji Ikeda (Cyclo), Ryuichi Sakamoto and Michael Nyman. In 1999, he merged his music label with Rastermusic, creating Raster-Noton. As well as being co-owner of the label, Nicolai continues his own sonic explorations, recording as Alva Noto and continuing his collaborative work, both with his Raster-Noton partners and others. BYETONE: Recording and performing as BYETONE, Olaf Bender weaves a digital tapestry with sound, meshing clicks, whirrs and hums with effects processing and binding them to a strong rhythmic structure. These elements combine to form a refined minimalist soundscape, a reflection of the exquisitely honed aesthetics he employs as chief graphic designer of the Raster-Noton music label. Live, the sounds are integrated seamlessly with computer animations controlled by Bender in real-time, which mutate and evolve throughout his performance, giving a comprehensive visual and audio experience. Olaf Bender is an originator of the minimalist avant-garde, active as a sound and visual artist for almost a quarter-century. His dedication to the possibilities of a simpler, sparser aesthetic is manifest both in his sound recordings and performances and in his work as the chief graphic designer for Raster-Noton. >From his beginnings as an art student and collaborator with the German art collective AG-Geige, Bender has reveled in the opportunities offered by media of sight and sound. In 1996 he founded the highly influential Rastermusic label as a vehicle for disseminating the electronic avant-garde sounds. In 1999, Rastermusic was itself synthesized with Bender's colleague and collaborator Carsten Nicolai's Noton Archiv F?r Ton Und Nichtton to form Raster-Noton, a platform for artists working in minimal and experimental electronica. In addition to his work with the label, Bender remains a powerful musical presence, recording solo works under the name Byetone and collaborating with label co-founders Carsten Nicolai and Frank Bretschneider as Signal. ORPHX: For over fifteen years, Orphx has been creating a unique fusion of hypnotic rhythms and electro-acoustic music. Using an assortment of synthesizers, samplers, feedback systems, and various homemade instruments, Orphx combines the dark, experimental aesthetics of early industrial music with the pulse of techno, electro and dub. The project began in 1993 as a trio, consisting of Richard Oddie, Christina Sealey and Aron West. The group began to explore a shared interest in experimental music, taking their name from the ancient Orphic cult. West left the group in 1995 to focus attention on noise project Tropism, while Oddie and Sealey began incorporating more rhythmic elements into Orphx, inspired by immersion in acid house, electro and minimal techno. Oddie and Sealey have since gained a substantial international following as one of the pioneering acts within the European "rhythmic noise" scene, while making increasingly strong connections with like-minded artists on the experimental fringes of techno. Oddie and Sealey have performed in numerous countries around the world and have collaborated on numerous audio/visual projects and exhibitions related to their musical output. Orphx has released a number of influential albums and singles since the mid 1990s, combining elements of techno with rhythmic noise and electro-acoustic soundscapes. More recent releases have combined all of these approaches into new hybrids of synthetic / organic sound (Circuitbreaking, 2004; Insurgent Flows, 2005, Teletai 2008). The forthcoming Division 12" on Sonic Groove marks a new phase for the project, developing their unique sound and further blurring the boundaries between techno, dub and electro-acoustic music. MIKE GIBBS: Well-travelled in techno circles, Toronto DJ/producer Mike Gibbs got his start in the underground as a singer for local industrial bands DHI, Pure and Love Bomber, that toured with Skinny Puppy, Ministry and Nine Inch Nails. He moved on to playing live techno at raves in the late '90s with local outfit Transformantra before travelling Asia where he played parties in Japan, Thailand and a memorable gig headlining Ministry of Sound in Taipei, Taiwan, Gibbs returned to Toronto around 2002 and sidestepped the city's nightclub mania for underground warehouse parties, honing his dark, glitchy, industrial-layered laptop beats. One of the founders of the well known and respected Box Of Kittens parties and frequently on the bill for the much-loved Promise events, Gibbs is working with fellow Torontonians DJ Hali and Lachlan Bleakely ( a.k.a. Locwax) on new projects. Meanwhile, his bootleg remixes with producer Gaz Mellen as Genetically Modified are circulating the scene. When noise becomes impotence, when impotence becomes a weapon. Noise and improvisation never done before, including elements of performance and conceptual art. Overdose of meaning, sucked into vacuum of dissolution. You never know where your are. DEFLAG HAEMORRHAGE/HAIEN KONTRA was formed in 2001 in Hackney, East London. Power improv where anything can happen. The improvisation is no longer happening just with musicians and their instruments but on the head of the spectator. Frustration as Psychological danger. We all are spectators: appearance of dissolution mirroring the averageness of our lives. Something must be done. DEFLAG HAEMORRHAGE/HAIEN KONTRA have collaborated with some of the most radical and legendary musicians in the avant-garde such as Eddie Prevost (AMM) and Philip Best (Consumer Electronics, ex-Whitehouse). DEFLAG HAEMORRHAGE/HAIEN KONTRA have performed in festivals in different parts in Europe such as Netmage (Bologna), Abject Music (Berlin), MEM (Bilbao) and TheErrorIsMedia (London). They have also done a residency at Worm (Rotterdam). --------------------------- DEFLAG HAEMORRHAGE/HAIEN KONTRA is " "[sic] Goldie & Mattin " "[sic] Goldie is one of the most original noise musician/performers on the European scene. His double album "ABJECTOR"[sic] is a violent and considered examination of the fragmentation of language, the de-composition of instrumental research and the painful suffering that accompanies it. Far from any current or cultural influence, Goldie's work places itself in a unique conceptual universe, and its cruel voice warbles a mix of agony and ecstasy. Mattin is performing at No Fun Fest this year and he just finished the Whitney Independent Study Program. Among his projects include: Sakada (with Eddie Prevost) and the avant-punk group Billy Bao . Mattin has collaborated with musicians such us Junko, Radu Malfatti, Matthew Bower & Drunkdriver. He has toured Europe, Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand and North America. He has over 50 releases in different labels around the world and with Anthony Iles he has edited the forthcoming book Noise & Capitalism. --------------------------- Review of their first record "Luxury" The Wire (Dec. 2005 U.K.) The long awaited debut release of Deflag Haemorrhage/Haien Kontra aka Mattin (guitar, vocals and computer feedback) and " "[sic] Goldie (drums, vocals, disc, chain and bird whistle] comprises 15 tracks recorded between July 2002 and November 2003. It includes one truly scary field recording made by Zoe Broughton at Huntingdon Life Sciences back in 1997, where she was working undercover for a Channel Four documentary to expose the notorious animal research facility's appalling cruelty to animals (see www.shac.net/HLS/exposed/broughton.html). A concert or album of unrelenting ferocious noise, whether by Hijokaidan, Borbetomagus, Merzbow or The Dust Breeders, may be a highly enjoyable rush of pure adrenaline, but it's no longer exactly a surprise. Mattin and Goldie can burst eardrums as well as the above - watch your speakers on the apocalyptic "Submucosa" - but they've learnt their lowercase lesson well, and use disturbingly quiet passages and slow menacing drones to equally devastating effect. Mattin is as unpredictable as ever, lurching from the kind of delicate laptoppery that graced his Grob release Building Excess with Klaus Filip, Dean Roberts and Radu Malfatti, to blasts of unmitigated sonic terror that will melt the fillings in your teeth. His guitar work and vocals are just as extreme, especially on the splendidly titled "It's Not Your Fault You Are The Authentic Version Of What The Rest Of Us Can Only Imagine", apparently recorded live (listening to the screams of terror and the vicious thudding of heavy chains I'm glad I wasn't there). Goldie's drumming is savage and ritualistic, from the isolated explosions of "Humiliated" to the all-out blitzkrieg of his solo offering "Lacguage = Noumenal Sarcoshyce"[sic] (a whole page of similarly impenetrable logorrhea adorns the 6" x 8" album cover), but it's refreshingly far removed from both free jazz and Improv percussion cliche, even though I suspect his collection includes a fair number of Eddie Prevost albums. Luxury is an album of awesome intensity, one that deserves to be blasted mercilessly from a 40,000W PA outside Huntingdon Life Sciences every day until the torture ceases. The sound of music, my favorite things, John Coltrane, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, de Bussy, Satie, Penderezky, the list goes on, but basically, all these artists have a sound, it is unmistakable. What John Coltrane does with his interpretation of my favorite things, is what i try to do with my own work, i try to do with textures, what he does with notes. The way he interprets the melody, flowing with incredible precision and musicality, i find very inspiring. When i prepared this program, i tried to take this further, looking for different processes of interpretation and looking for artists who have mastered their unique identity through the music of sound. again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! framework 354 rue de l'andelle 27910 perruel france info at frameworkradio.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *17.05.09* 1.10000PeacockFeathersinFoamingAcidPart2 Evelina Domnitch + Dmitry Gelfand, from ?Colorfield Variations.? on line http://portablepalace.com http://www.12k.com/line 2.?ttinar dirac http://dirac.klingt.org 3.vester fields (extract of) Steve Roden on Volume http://www.inbetweennoise.com http://www.volumeprojects.org 4.Effect Of Discovery Angel from kalmukia on Editions Mego 2008 http://mirrorworldmusic.com/artists/angel http://www.myspace.com/angelnoise http://www.editionsmego.com 5.untitled sound objects PE Lang+ zimoun http://www.untitled-sound-objects.ch 6.Patchworked Blanket sawako from HUM on 12k http://www.troncolon.com http://www.12k.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ framework intro submissions: 1) take yourself and a recording device to a location of your choice 2) record for AT LEAST one minute before you - 3) read aloud the following text: *welcome to framework.* *framework is a show consecrated to field recording, and its use in composition. field recording, phonography, the art of sound hunting; open your ears and listen! **/[3b) please also feel free to translate this text into your native tongue!]/* 4) continue your recording for AT LEAST two minutes after you have finished speaking 5) send the recording on any format to the above address, or as an mp3 via email thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ drop a note to info at frameworkradio.net to be added to or removed from this mailing list -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... With this new label Auricular Records aims to explore and provide a vehicle for the release of a new canvas of soundart focused on field recordings. The first two releases on Ambit Din are Massimo Polveraccio's (mp) project Urban Soundscapes and Markus Jones' project Sympathetic Vibration (Prolongation of Sound By Reflection). Both titles will be available through popular online digital distribution channels (iTunes, eMusic, Rhapsody, and Napster), however a CDr can be ordered directly from Ambit Din. The CDr issues are enhanced CDrs which contain the audio portion of the project as well as supporting digital text, photographs and additonal media materials as well as mp3 files of all tracks. Urban Soundscapes /mp> The basic sound materials were collected around the world during previous trips and were subsequently modified using Audacity and Reasons 3.0. The sounds to the extent possible have not been treated or altered. They have been processed through a sampler (NN-XT Advanced Sampler) and with a equalizer (MClass) In one or two cases the artist added some basic reverb. Each of the pieces (all approx 3 minutes in length) represents a place in time and in space and intends to make the listeners aware of the effect of sound and the space that surround us. The interaction between these two elements (sound and space) is something we normally do not notice, but it is something that accompanies us throughout our days. About /mp> Massimo Polveraccio (MP) is Italian and lives in Toronto, Canada. He is not a musician, never learned music, but he likes to describe himself as a sound designer. He has been playing with his computer for years and finally was able to come up with something that seemed to address his interest for aesthetic and quiet listening. Massimo had previously published an EP titled "turning pages" which can be downloaded for free from www.sinewaves.it. Sympathetic Vibrations (Prolongation of Sound By Reflection) A project by Markus Jones Markus Jones began collecting sound spring 2007, wandering around campus; armed with a number of small recording devices, recording the most noticeable sounds he could possibly hear. Once he started to playback the sounds, he found himself gravitating towards the smaller sounds or those that might otherwise be overlooked i.e. the faint sound of the electricity in the wall, the water running through the pipes etc. He shortly returned armed with a number of contact microphones this enabled him to attach devices to the walls, windows, pipes and just about anything else he could lay his hands on, picking up every possible microscopic sound. In addition to microphones used an electromagnetic coil to collect sound through electronic frequencies emanating from such devices as mobile phones, radio microphones and when near a location using a number of electronic devices i.e. an IT room; Jones managed to pick up little sections of slightly distorted conversation between the staff and students. About Markus Jones Markus Jones (b.1973) Designer of sound and phonographer, educated at the RNCM and the University of York, in both composition and electroacoustics. Largely focusing on site- specific and installation work by simply offsetting our normal perceptions. Given that the aim is to replicate a subjective experience of the surrounding sonic environment, collecting sound based on its original origin before twisting it into an interpretation of the original source. About Ambit Din Ambit Din is a small independent label focused on exploring the broad realm of field recordings. There are four separate divisions to Ambit Din in order to properly classify the releases: ethnikos - a way to document oral presentations and ethnomusicology naturae - aimed at the collection of environmental recordings and bioacoustics envirounen - audio documentation of environments such as workplaces and cityscapes arte - avant-garde, experimental and ambient music projects utilizing field recordings as the source material Ambit Din plans to release a small number of compilations that include recordings from each categorization together to serve as an overall introduction to the label. Releases will be limited, hand numbered editions. We are also releasing full length individual projects. We are actively seeking artists interested in participating - anyone interested can contact Ambit Din through Auricular Records at info at auricular.com or read over our submission guidelines. Upcoming releases for the summer of 2009 on Ambit Din include an enhanced CDr of material by: Brad Brace - including photo journal and sounds from Brad's Islands projects The Amber Tapes - a CD and 40 page limited edition hardbound book of photos and designs to accompany the works Ambit Din Volume 1 - A compilation of sample tracks by artists on The Ambiut Din label as well as a few extra "friends" exclusive works especially for this release Contact Information Visit Ambit Din online at http://www.ambitdin.com Follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/auricular For additional information contact us at info at auricular.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... At exactly the same time similar efforts were being undertaken in Germany by Rudolf Pfenninger in Munich and, somewhat later, by Oscar Fischinger in Berlin. This invention came at least twenty years too early while the World War II was already at the threshold. As a result by late 1930-s the work in this domain effectively came to a halt. Although there were several short articles published in USA by V.Solev (1935), most publications about research and developments in the USSR were in Russian. At the same time the most important documents were never published at all and were circulating in manuscript form. Fortunately many unique archives survived and are collected now at the Theremin Center in Moscow. Over two hours of synthesized music produced in 1930s twenty years before the foundation of electronic music were discovered recently at the Russian State Film Archive. Many of those materials which were never shown before are included in our presentation. http://asmir.theremin.ru/gsound1.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://link.mail2web.com/mail2web From ubeboet at gmail.com Thu May 21 05:16:09 2009 From: ubeboet at gmail.com (ubeboet) Date: Thu, 21 May 2009 11:16:09 +0200 Subject: [microsound-announce] Markus Jones - send & receive (new online ep on con-v) Message-ID: Introduction Questioning what kind of sound could possibly be heard when sending an e-mail, whilst on a journey across a network and whether the sound differs when you receive an e-mail or when any form of data is being transferred across a Network. A New Musical Environment The opportunity presented itself when an IT friend and I were having a conversation about his place of work and invited me to pop along and record the potential sounds. Not wanting to miss the possibility of investigating further, I spent the next few days, equipped with a number of recording tools sitting in an enormous network server room. My initial thought was that of complete astonishment! I couldn?t quite get over how noisy the space was! I perhaps ignorantly always imagined that it was going to be a very tranquil space, with just the discreet sound of a small fan and the occasional bleep. The vast amount of noise was mainly due to the number of cooling fans required to prevent the servers from over heating. Never really wanting to capture the sounds of cooling fans (perhaps I?ll save that for another project) I started focusing on the light sources from the many LED lights, using a number of different photocells, and to capture the actual sounds being transferred across the network I constructed an audio/ network cable that allowed me to connect to both the server and my laptop using Plogue Bidule and writing a MSP patch that recorded to one soundcard when data was being sent and to another soundcard when the data was being received. This method allowed me the option of manipulating in real-time either sound source whilst the data was been transmitted. The Sound Seemingly a collection of simultaneous granular sounds, altering in frequency, tone and timbre, and with very little uniformity. A signal is received from the unpolished and altering sound. Once captured, it was then expanded through forming sequences of a coarse sonic progression and with the aid of Bidule it was possible within real-time to manipulate and begin to structure. The Completed Work The final piece is comprised from 16 different servers and from 1200 different ports, collecting close to 16,000 sounds. The first section of the piece is the sounds heard when the data is being ?Sent? and the second half of the piece is the perceived sound of the data being ?Received?. http://www.con-v.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... They are not documentaries nor are they pure: I cannot imagine as a naturalist that one edits out impurity. I cannot imagine that as critic of naturalism one edits out impurities. So in some sense it is a work that is in argument with formalist phonography yet it accepts the basic premise which I call ``seeding across time``. My work is a bit like what one might call ``wild-scaping``---allowing urban decay to express itself unchecked while nature takes over. It is in this regard I include ``technical breakdowns``: wrinkles to remain in the table-cloth, stains on the tie or runs in one`s stockings to show through. Some sounds are designed to enter the ``center`` of ego-consciousness, while others seem peripheral. And yet I have invested equal energy in these ``remote`` fringes and I like to imagine the music evolves with your environment and rides on a continuum of sound that surpasses every rendering and is renewed with each listening. The ``remote provinces`` are all around us. They may be places of exile but also places of solitude, introspection and transcendence but they are nevertheless characterized by ruptures and coincidences of attention. Each of us is a remote province integrating and disintegrating, emerging from and immersed in empire. I have tried to build in sound a sense of worlds inside worlds living, at the occasional expense of transparency, transparently. + 'Instant-Cascade-Distant' THANOS CHRYSAKIS, JAMES O'SULLIVAN, DARIO BERNAL-VILLEGAS, OLI MAYNE, JERRY WIGENS The continuous presence of the guitar creates the main axis for these improvisations that happened between 2007-2008. Different sound sources, from electronic sounds to the clarinet, and prepared piano interchange roles, swarm around and together with the guitar creating sonic and harmonic fields that oscillate between the spectral and the gestural. Also, you'll be able to listen some tracks from the CDs in the listening room: -- From rinusfiles at gmail.com Thu May 21 10:10:49 2009 From: rinusfiles at gmail.com (rinus van alebeek) Date: Thu, 21 May 2009 16:10:49 +0200 Subject: [microsound-announce] saturday 23. All the best a n t o n m o b i n http://audioblog.arteradio.com/anton_mobin http://h.a.k.free.fr ____________________________________________ MICRO-CLIMAT by Anton Mobin With his new piece the Paris-based sound artist Anton Mobin does not compile a vague weather forecast, but alters the climate significantly. The composition appears to be traditional and the modern Click & Cut movement reconcile with the near-ground sounds found in Music Concrete. In this near-ground area the artist creates much more than factual statements of meteorology with statistics, investigations and average values. It becomes a micro-climate full of sounds, noises and sometimes scraps of conversations assembled to a clearly defined landscape. To a greater degree Mobin paints an imaginary terrain with a variety of textures, vegetation, existing development and temperature differences. All that has influence on the audible micro climate. Different colorations and various currents strain the imagination of the listener, but there is always free space for interpretation. And after all the quarter of an hour piece works like climatic changes do. Immediately. The composition based on source material recorded in 2008 on the peninsula of Croisic (Bretagne) and on the Ile du Frioul (South of France) and became part of the soundPOOL installation at SoundLAB VI. "Culture is made up of memory, how to found something upon that feeble, fog-made construct?. I remember what I remember, that sounds like something I've been told and I thought I had lived, memory as a faulty, poor and blind probe, penetrating the dark night of our collective past. People's memory is scum stuck on the corners of their objects, static and out-of-tune radio noises, recorded voices, and a bundle of photos fastened with a rubberband. Reality is made up of memory. And reality is nothing but three or four records, captured by poor and biased mechanisms, written in even more restricted languages, to confuse us all. Memories are sounds similar to worn-out, stained colors, audio extures slipping in your hands, tasting like oxyde when closing your eyes. Close your eyes and listen to those memories in modulated bits by minds that remember what they didn't see, warriors from an amplified net, memory noises mixed up with bullets, kerosene smell, a dream turned into nightmare. These electronic works are mutilated encephalograms coming from the mind of the land, fractured memory splinters, little stories, like fading black and white photographs, trapped in the air like coarse fireflies in the midst of dark. Listen to them: here's light and death, beauty and mantra, gear and oil. Flesh and memory." This journal will be published both online and in printed format. The aims of the journal are to encourage, develop and disseminate information about activities and developments in the field, and in particular to foster interaction between Spanish and English speaking composers, performers, researchers, and listeners. The journal is open to all aesthetic and scholarly viewpoints and approaches. Sonic Ideas/Ideas S?nicas? core idea is to publish novel and challenging perspectives on technology and its influence on music and sound art, and it seeks to promote serious research and debate on these topics. The journal is aimed at a broad group of English and Spanish speaking readers, including researchers, artists, musicians, composers, performers, and musicologists. We hope that in Sonic Ideas/Ideas S?nicas they will find a source of dynamic and up-to-date information, endowed with intelligent and challenging perspectives on technology and its influence on music and sonic arts. Likewise, we hope that it will become a forum within an academic framework while remaining relevant to the interests and projects of its readers. This third issue of SonicIdeas/IdeasS?nicas will deal with perspectives on the use of pulse for rhythmic construction in electronic music, sonic art and any musical genre where new instrument technologies or new compositional methods aided by technology are a central element. The ease with which sound is currently sequenced by means of musical informatics opens up a vast area for exploration into the use of rhythm in sound creativity. Furthermore, we are interested in investigating the relationship between musical styles and the explicitness of pulse in rhythmic composition. Is the use of loops and looping techniques more of a resource in electronic than in electroacoustic music? Is there an inherent relationship between rhythmic complexity and depth of musical content? Do regional tendencies and geography account for a greater or lesser incorporation of explicit pulse as a structuring element in musical creation? Musical informatic tools allow entirely 'acoustic' composers to create computer-aided music with very precise control of rhythmic ideas. Do these tools invite the composer to think in terms of pulsation? Do these tools foster innovation in non-electronic contemporary music? Composers can give useful and interesting evidence on the role of pulse and rhythmic construction in their work. In this way, specific musical examples that illustrate rhythmic strategies can be shared with the research community, and the abstract inspiration for these strategies can be usefully illustrated. Therefore we invite music and sound creators, in particular, to contextualize their work within contemporary critical thinking on issues of rhythm. We also invite musicologists to offer illustrated reflections on the subject by comparing and contrasting the work of various musical creators. Contributed sound examples in .mp3 format will be made available for streaming from the CMMAS website. *Other topics of interest include: * * The rhythmic sound object and derived new musical forms. * The structuring power of pulse. * Issues of cueing and syncing in mixed genre electroacoustic music. * Machine listening in terms of rhythm. * Electronic music and dance. * Dance music. * Rhythmic styles in popular yet experimental electronica. * Realtime rhythmic transformation strategies. * Cognitive processes relating to rhythm. * The computer as a tool in rhythmic creation. * Mathematics in rhythmic structuring. Authors whose contributions are published assign CMMAS the non-exclusive rights to disseminate their work in every form of media, within legal limits. Authors must posses, and provide proof of such possession with their submission, the legal right to reproduce any secondary copyright materials. Submitted articles may have been previously published. The journal will publish articles in either Spanish or English; submissions will be accepted in either language, and will be published in the submitted language. Dual-language publication will also be considered on a case-by-case basis. Articles on any aspect of electroacoustic music/sonic art will be considered, as will reviews, analyses, historical studies, tutorials and other pedagogical articles, and studio/regional/festival reports. Other proposals are welcomed. Authors must submit their proposed articles via email or on disc. Documents must be submitted as Microsoft Word documents, including all necessary graphics and musical examples. Audio examples will be considered for the online version of the journal. *The deadline for submissions is October 1st, 2009*. Authors should submit their proposed material, a brief (ca. 100 word) biography and contact information, including institutional affiliation, if any. *Formatting guidelines: * * A4 page size * 2.5 cm left and right margins * Page numbers centred at the bottom of the page, 1.25 cm from the bottom of the page * Times or Times New Roman, 12pt font; 18pt line spacing * Single spacing within paragraphs, double spacing between paragraphs * Justified text * The first line of each paragraph should be indented by 1cm. * Headings: centred and bold in 14pt font, preceded and followed by an 18pt space. * Italics are to be used for all quotations, note names and titles * Quotations longer than four lines should be formatted as a block quote (left and right indent by 1 cm), preceded by a 6pt space and followed by an 18pt space (line spacing within the block quote should be 20pt). * Underlining or other forms of emphasis should not be used. * Indicate footnotes with a superscript number in the text.[1] Place the footnotes at the bottom of the page on which they appear. Use 10pt type for footnotes. Precede the footnote with a horizontal rule. Footnotes are to be numbered consecutively through the article. * Illustrations, such as musical examples or tables, should be integrated within the body of the text, centered with a 10pt caption (captions are to be below the illustration) and numbered. * The layout of the different types of contributions should start as follows: a) *Articles and short contributions* (e.g. conference reports) should begin with the title (centred, bold and in 14pt font), followed by 18pt spacing. This is to be followed by the name of the author (centred): "by [First Name, Surname]" (no title), followed by 18pt spacing. b) *Reviews* should begin with the name of the author and the title of the publication/recording(s) reviewed, followed by the publication information (centred, bold, 14pt font; the title in italics): First Name Surname: title, Place: Publishers, Year. The ritual ? strongly influenced by Slavic neo-paganism ? is a form of reuniting with Nature glorified by sounds and lets the cosmic energies flow through participators, their ideas & their music. All emotions of these moments flew out unimpeded through instruments in an easygoing jam session in unusual circumstances of nature. Edited version of what was played during that event - of which successors will be speaking in poems for a long long time after ? is track presented here: digital clash of psycho-folk and way-too-free jazz made from original recordings with a sense of humor typical for Recycling Records. We seek submissions of radiophonic sound art by Canadians for broadcast. Just about anything goes: natural sound, electronic sound, found sound, lost sound, exciting sounds, very very very boring sounds (i.e., sounds so boring they eventually become very interesting), soundscapes, sound escapes, sound escapades, sound composition, sound decomposition, sound compost. There are few, if any, restrictions on genre or style. It just has to be Canadian, eh? However, as CFRO is a small, co-operative radio station, there are certain technical limitations on the works we can accept. Works submitted should have fairly consistent and reasonable dynamic range, as very quiet works, works with long stretches of silence, or works with wildly varying extremes of quiet and loud sound are less successful on air. Works should not contain lots of noise or sounds which may be mistaken for static or radio noise. Works should not contain extremes of high or low frequencies, as these will likely not appear to our listeners. Basically, we are looking for (and listening for) works which are idiomatically suited to the medium of radio. Works may be of any length, up to and including one hour. Submissions may be sent via postal mail or (preferably) email. Please reply to this email *off-list* to for the address to which to submit work by post (and please use postal mail, rather than parcel services such as DHL). If you have work online for download, please reply *off-list* to this email with a link. You may also send works *off-list* as email attachments, provided the total attachment size per email is no more than 15 MB. If you wish to send attachments larger than 15 MB, please send multiple emails. Multi-part .rar files or HJsplit files are acceptable. All submissions should include confirmation of the artist's (Canadian) nationality. You may include as much or as little biographical/contextual information as you like. ~pt -- 'In order to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first create the universe.' ~Carl Sagan ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ Phil Thomson ~ http://philthomson.ca/ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From rinusfiles at gmail.com Thu May 28 06:23:50 2009 From: rinusfiles at gmail.com (rinus van alebeek) Date: Thu, 28 May 2009 12:23:50 +0200 Subject: [microsound-announce] 30.May at Staalplaat, Berlin Message-ID: Dear friends abroad and listeners at home, On Saturday 30. Read in this post about trees falling in a forest, inverted vacuum cleaners, an old violin and a modified electro-motor; about Hans Otte's Buch der Kl?nge and the Feedbacksociety; about Xavier van Wersch and Emerson, Lake & Palmer; and a little about circuitbending. There also was R?bus, who came over from Paris for the weekend and made some clips. Growth and behaviour of these microscopic animals remind us of our own micro-macro-development. With the image and the movement of the organisms, the participants are encouraged to collect inspiration and bridge video and sound to what they experience with these small ???animalcules???, as termed by their first observer Leeuwenhoek in 1677. The participants will learn How to work with the usb-microscopes and hack webcams to be used as microscopes, observe the behaviour and motion of the waterbears and other microorganisms, find sounds from the lab equipment, hack into electronic devices to integrate into bioelectronic culture devices and build habitats for the animals. Material needed The participant should bring their own laptop/computer, a webcam with an adjustable lens and some general lab stuff they have access to. Material available various labware, glassware, petri-dishes, usb-microscopes, microorganisms, soldering stations, electronic parts, arduinos etc.. - a tota acad?mia musical existent. Sunday 31st May at 22h30 ?? Free entry!!! This concert is integrated in the *5. -- In case you wish not to receive any more mails from us, please let us know about it. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
