If you're even a little bit into drones or shoegaze rock please do give this a listen. Magnifications is something on the order of My Bloody Valentine for cello and laptop. It's dense, soaring, fuzz-soaked and triumphant stuff. You can download the record here: http://www.luvsound.org/releases/view/luv022 We're also now accepting preorders for the limited edition CDR version of this record which comes with buttons, postcards, and a special little booklet including liner notes written by Disquiet's Marc Weidenbaum. There is also twenty-four minutes of live remastered bonus material! The packaging itself is hand-assembled in my brand new bedroom assembly line and the artwork is printed locally in New York at a small independent printer. Thanks! Participant level: Beginners and Intermediate users. Monday 30 March- Friday April 3rd (Course Work) 11.00-19.00 Final Presentation Friday April 3rd-5th Location: NK / ElsenStr. 52 (2.Hof) Berlin, Germany Telephone: +49(0)176 20626386 Course Participation fee: 325 ? email to: eNKa_NK at gmx.de Please register early to ensure a place. Places are limited to 12 Essential: Participants are required to bring their own laptops with Max/MSP/Jitter installed. The demo version can be downloaded from > and is fully functional in demo mode for up to 30 days after installation. All participants must prepare for the workshop by completing Tutorials 1-14 included in the Max documentation, part of the download linked above. The final projects will be put on exhibition as an installation open for viewing on the weekend of April 3-5. Max/MSP Topics: We will rapidly move through the basics of the MaxMSP visual programming environment, answering any lingering questions of the participants and getting everyone in the group up to speed with the essentials of patch construction, message passing, encapsulation, order of operations, data processing and so on. Although MaxMSP is a large and complex set of building blocks, the construction of compact, understandable and (above all) useful patches is surprisingly simple. Within a couple of hours, participants should be comfortably creating basic patches and analyzing/ modifying more complex existing patches to implement their ideas within the MaxMSP environment. Jitter Topics: Armed with the essentials, we'll move right into visual data processing using the Jitter extensions to MaxMSP. Topics to be explored include still and moving image playback and processing, use of external controllers or user interface devices to influence playback and processing behaviors, direct pixel access and transcoding (conversion of Jitter data to "normal" MaxMSP data and vice versa), among others. Jitter extends the data vocabulary of MaxMSP (integer & floating-point numbers, symbols, lists) to include a 'matrix' type: a table of numbers (think Excel spreadsheet). These tables can have several layers/planes and multiple dimensions, making them an ideal carrier for (among other things) frame-based media such as video or OpenGL (3D) vertex and texture data, text and audio analysis data. We'll be taking a survey of the most important and typical uses of Jitter matrices, particularly as they can be applied to the group's project. Project Idea: The core idea for the workshop project is to start from a small and simple video file?typically formatted 48x64 pixels, either monochrome (black-and-white) or 16 grays?and generate an acoustically interesting audio signal that will be used to encode and transmit the video to another computer. This will, in turn, use the video data to control simple everyday household electric devices. Schedule: ? Day 1- 2 Introduction to Max: objects, messages, and patch cords Jitter: introduction to image processing. ? Days 2 and 3 ? Building audio based protocol to transmit image based information Days 4 and 5 ? Attaching physical devices to the system ? We will investigate different interfaces that enable Max to communicate with the outside world. This may include the Arduino board, the Teabox, DMX interfaces, and/or serial boards with attached relays. Tools: -Arduino Board -DMX Interface -DMX Dimmers -USB to Serial Board with Relays Workshop leaders: Jeremy Bernstein makes temporal media, comprising mostly sound, video and code. In various forms?performances, presentations and screenings?his work has been exhibited throughout Europe and North America. For several years, his work has been concerned, on a technical level, with "reanimation"?assembling temporal structures out of static or frozen fragments of "personally associative" materials?home movies, snapshots, field recordings, old records, etc. Increasingly, he has been exploring sound and image as "influenceable media" -- semi-fluid forms capable of withstanding structural modulation -through the use of custom computer software. He has composed numerous music and sound scores for theater and dance productions, and constructed several interactive video and sound environments for theater and other live performance events. He is also a developer of MaxMSP (Cycling '74, 1988 - present) and co-author of the Jitter multidimensional data processing environment (Cycling '74, 2002 - present). http://www.bootsquad.com/ Peter Castine is a composer and sonic artist who has been using Max since 1990. He has produced electroacoustic music at the ?Elektronisches Studio? at the Technical University of Berlin, the "Studio for Sonic Arts" at the University of the Arts in Berlin, and the Bergen (Norway) Center for Electronic Arts (bek). His electroacoustic and instrumental music has been performed in Europe, Asia, and North America. He is increasingly working with sonic and multimedia installation art, particularly the realiTV project where he works with John Dekron, and has shown work at Transmediale, ICMC, and other festivals. He has taught courses in Max/MSP at Darmstadt, Warsaw, and Berlin. Castine is also known as a developer of external objects for Max/MSP/Litter, with projects including the Litter Power Package, the Litter Bundle for Jitter (LBJ), and the ICE Sequencing tools with (with DSPAudio). He has also developed code for the BIX media fa?ade and the iPhone application FutureSound. http://www.bek.no/~pcastine/ John Dekron is a media artist, performer and developer of customized video applications for media environments. His work and long-term media experience cover a broad spectrum: from media for architecture and video installations to custom setups and individual programming for clubs, artists and visual concepts for internationally operating companies and high-profile events. Past projects include performances in Germany, Europe and South America, programming of the BIX media facade in Graz, Austria, the SPOTS media facade in Berlin, works for musician Gonzales, the artist Carsten Nicolai plus multi-screen software development for Formula One side events in the Middle East. John Dekron is programmer and developer of the Softmix HD Video-Mixing and ES-X crossplatform VJ performance software. He has given lectures and workshops on realtime video processing and performing at Merz Akademie, Stuttgart and the HBG, Leipzig, and at other venues. http://www.thismedia.com http://www.thisserver.de/john_dekron.php -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This piece explores the extremes of the sonic spectrum, starting with sparse pizzicati and growing into thick, nebulous soundscapes. About halfway through, the piece begins thinning out, and the focus shifts to the use of bowed harmonics and subtle variations in timbre. As these sounds are manipulated, they become more textured and bubbly, with occasional disruptions, before finally settling into a weightless calm." These recordings will be used, without identifying the speaker, as part of visual artwork(s) (paintings) that I?m developing at present. If you are interested, you can either : upload a link to a sound file of yourself talking about the event (send via yousendit.com ) to identity_painting at yahoo.com Ideally your sound file will be recorded in a quieter place so you can be heard clearly. or Interviews can be arranged. Interviews can take up to 40 minutes, but can be shorter if you wish. Please contact me, in the first instance, via the email address above. In both options you will need to indicate that you give consent for your speech to be used in the sound installation. You will need to be over 18 in order to do this. Schwere Reiter Halle. Dachauerstr. 114 When: May 5-9 2009 3-9 PM. Presentation May 9 at Materialausgabe 2009 Participation: ?15 places. Attendance is free. Electronic parts 30,-Euro Registration: http://www.aa-vv.org/?av_02010101 by April 15 2009 Organized by: http://aa-vv.org In cooperation with: http://echtzeithalle.de and http://schwerereiter.de Support: Department of Arts and Culture of Munich More: http://www.aa-vv.org/?av_0201 Drawing the hidden music out of everyday objects. Coils are the very soul of electronic music. The Victorians made jump, Jimi Hendrix made them howl and this workshop hopes to make them sing. It guides participants in creating and using electro-magnetic forces to create a type of 'acoustically synthesized' music from salvaged metal objects. We will explore how any object can be turned into a loud speaker and how the principal of feedback can make these objects vibrate with sound. You will learn among other things: How inventors, musicians and experimenters have used various objects as sound diffusers throughout the history of electronic music. How to stereoscopically eavesdrop on the inner of workings of electronic devices. How to make a basic amplifier. How to create an electromagnetic field capable of resonating ferric metal objects. How to create cheap and effective contact microphones. How to adapt an amplifier so that it becomes an expressive touch-controlled instrument, namely a 'crackle box'. Day 1-5: Introduction to music made with similar techniques involving an emphasis on coils. The relationship between music and electromagnetism. Listening to different electro-magnetic fields. Demonstration of an object being resonated. Demonstration of sympathetic resonance. How to read electronic schematics. How to solder. Construction of simple audio amplifiers. Feeding an audio signal into a coil. Adapting the amplifier to create a 'crackle-box'. Exploring, personalizing and tailoring the circuit to your own fancies. Miraculous agitation! Acoustic waveshaping. Scavenger hunt trip. Using the coils and amplifiers to resonate junk objects. Filtering sounds through the objects. Setting up. Recap and rehearsal. Gala! ?: How about shifting the current educational emphases more towards co-creation of the interesting spatial and acoustic situation, complex setup? The openness of instruments, setup and us are very important to me. CW: So to summarise your reply. More composition less gadgets! Great, these kind of events get far to bogged down in technology. ?: And please, please: 'How to interact' (including public) instead of 'How to solder'! And in case someone somehow did miss a soldering technique in his/her life, it could be explained. Secretly. Although sure: learning, soldering and building instruments.. CW: I agree I would much prefer to get on with the music and composition rather than teaching people how to solder! The aim of the workshop is to get the participants quickly to the point where they have two adaptable instruments (a cracklebox and essential a DIY ebow to be focused on using these tools to pull out a wide soundscape from discarded objects. Each participant would be an 'island of sound' in the space, surrounded by the junk that they were using their newly constructed instruments to transform into a harmonic sound environment! Because we are using the junk objects as loud speakers all over the space allowing the public to see exactly what is going on soundwise. Dan Wilson is a composer, instrument builder and sound designer from Hertfordshire with a BA and MA in Sonic Art, and whose interests lie primarily in the use of electromagnetic agitation in new instrument design. As of 2009 he features on SPNM's composer shortlist. As well as instrument building, he is also a keen practitioner and theorist of mediadropping the act of leaving homemade tapes or CDs in public places for people to find). He was awarded the 2007 Arts Foundation electroacoustic composition fellowship (nominated by the Ed Baxter of the LMC) which led to a performance of his electromagnetic work 'Corrosion Suite' at the Tate Modern in June that year. He has been featured in The Wire on numerous occasions, in Unknown Public, in Nic Collins' book 'Handmade Electronic Music', and in the groundbreaking 365 Days Project MP3 series on Ubuweb. He is a performer in the electroacoustic improve quartet Oscillatorial Binnage. Chris Weaver is a composer and experimentalist, laptop and electronics improviser from London. When not manning the helm at London's Resonance104.4FM, he can be found alongside vocalist KJ Grant in their frequent duo and sporadic guest-lead trios. Occasionally he also turns up twanging rubber bands and playing circuit bent casios in the group, Oscillatory Binnnage. Hardware Hacking Workshops Description Nicolas Collins presents two hands-on workshops in Hardware Hacking. Assuming no technical background whatsoever, these workshops guide the participants through a series of sound-producing electronic construction projects, from making simple contact microphones, through "bending" toys", to making oscillators and other circuits from scratch. The workshops end with a performance/installation by all participants, and a party to celebrate the publication of the expanded second edition of his book, Handmade Electronic Music ? The Art of Hardware Hacking. April 20: Basic Hacking Alternate microphones (contact mikes, coil pickups, using speakers and headphone as microphones, tape heads, etc.). Homemade transducers for sending sound through objects for physical filtering (cheap "Rainforest"). "Victorian synthesizer" (making an oscillator with just a speaker and a battery). "Laying of hands" on a radio circuit board (the poor man?s Cracklebox). "Circuit Bending" (new noises from old toys). April 21: Advanced Hacking Circuits from scratch: oscillators, tremolo/gate/panner, mixers preamp/distortion, weird analog signal processing. New York born and raised, Nicolas Collins studied composition with Alvin Lucier, worked for many years with David Tudor, and has collaborated with numerous musicians around the world. He lived most of the 1990s in Europe, where he was Visiting Artistic Director of Stichting STEIM (Amsterdam), and a DAAD composer-in-residence in Berlin. Since 1997 he has been editor-in-chief of the Leonardo Music Journal. He is a Professor in the Department of Sound at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Collins has the dubious distinction of having played at both CBGBs and the Concertgebouw. www.nicolascollins.com -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web LIVE ? "Being familiar with the background of this gentleman, there is no reason to be surprised by the perplexing windings his musical ways have taken. Could it be that the present release is just a natural manifestation of deep philosophical considerations that expose obvious correlations between New Music, improvised jazz and algorithmic composition? "Lars form Mars" reveals a confident flair for the very particular nature of electronic music. Thru the use of archetypal quintessence, he manages to transport the listener to remote lateral branches of forgotten galaxies, as well as underwater colonies of unsettling life forms, inhabiting retro-futuristic spheres. Early memories of acid techno - such as 808 State, Phuture and Mandroid - are evoked, as Lars comes up with selfprogrammed software weapons that generate a stunning variety to deceitfully straight sequences, far above any 16-step drummachine. A strong dose of absurd humor is present here, in the playful patterns that hide between bone-dry beats and deep, melancholic bass-lines, echoing the New Music composition background of this gentleman from Mars. A fine and exceptionally interesting debut by a bold musical universalist." The label will be focusing on releasing my experimental and non- dance floor works, works from the Transelectronic Archive (http://www.transelectronic.net ), as well as select musicians who fit the esthetic of Io Records. Currently scheduled artists are Baye & Connor Long [aka Khonnor]. Below are the links to Boomkat, and for those that are click- challenged, the Boomkat review as well of the current releases. Title: Richard J Valeo - Hardware Excursions Volume One Release info: http://transelectronic.net/v2/archives/294 Boomkat link: http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=167034 Boomkat Review: "Returning under his own name after recent activity as Isomer Transition, Type's very excellent RJ Valeo resumes more experimental duties, momentarily setting aside his preoccupations with techno formats. Hardware Excursions Vol. 1 finds the New York producer exploring deep and extended freeform synthesizer explorations, at time bordering on drone or even outright noise. You can hear a bit of a sci- fi influence creeping into the music, with combining elements of low frequency, motor-like oscillations and higher pitched, modulated bird- like timbres making up the largest part of Valeo's minimalist sound palette. Structurally these pieces are very liberated, unburdening themselves from anything that might be termed 'form' right up until the distorted industrial rhythm that fires up towards the end of 'Excursion Two'. The result is 16 minutes of dense, surprising and immersive electronic music of the highest order. Very highly recommended." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Title: Richard J Valeo - Devolutions Volume One Release info: http://transelectronic.net/v2/archives/296 Boomkat link: http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=167098&highlight=167107 Boomkat Review "After last week's Hardware Excursions, RJ Valeo sustains his experimental outlook with this selection of masterfully realised micro- drones. The interchange between extreme high frequencies and deep, steady-handed industrial tones on 'Construct 05' immediately brings to mind Richard Chartier's highly disciplined sound world, but these compositions also move towards more extrovert territory, harbouring shadows of half-melodies and flourishes of fractured circuitry. These more exploratory releases find Valeo in glorious form - let's hope that he continues to pursue this beatless direction for a good while longer yet..." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Io Records Q1 & Q2 2009 Release Schedule March Richard J Valeo - Programmatic Responses April Richard J Valeo - Devolutions Volume Two RJ Valeo - Sunrise (Boomkat Edition) Spring / Summer 2009 Richard J Valeo - Days (as featured in The Wire Tapper) Richard J Valeo - The Basement Tapes Baye - The Spandrel Connor Long (aka Khonnor) - The Untitled Release ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Demos & Submissions We are currently open to hearing your works, so get in touch if you are interested. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thanks for you valuable time. Home Normal will be kicking off with the ever wonderful Library Tapes on March 20th. ?Sketches? was originally released in very limited numbers by David Wenngren himself at Make Mine Music in 2007 as a ?tour? CD. On ?Sketches? we hear David team up with cellist Danny Norbury (Static Caravan, Ono), whose work we will also be releasing later in the year under his and David?s Le Lendemain guise. We decided to repackage and re-release this beautiful work with Jeremy Bible taking over photography, design and mastering duties." Now available in the Experimedia shop are the first two releases on this fantastic new label! Library Tapes Sketches Direct whilst elusive, sumptuous and austere, precise yet expansive.David Wenngren?s Library Tapes is an amalgam of beautifully juxtoposed expressions and deftly described phrases.Found sounds and field recordings crackle and smoulder as Danny Norbury?s cello teases out a foundation for fragile piano melodies. While those passages so gentle and elegant form the spine of David?s sound, its the sense of patience - of compositional balance which lifts his work to the stratosphere. These are 11 windows to a world of timeless suspension, of grace and of glorious decay.? http://www.experimedia.net/index.php?main_page=product_music_info&cPath=8_47&products_id=181 Celer Engaged Touches The music of Will Thomas Long?s and Danielle Baquet-Long?s Celer is an absorbing combination of classic ambient, minimalism, and ? perhaps as the most distinct characteristic ? overwhelming romanticism. Longing, melancholy, nostalgia, and the like seem to be recurring themes in Will and Dani?s works. Engaged Touches begins with hypnotic sounds of a train clattering on its tracks. This departure seems to set the whole piece into a context of travel and distance, moving away from and towards something, someone. After a while these sounds give way to a rousing, majestic set of string loops. Similar phases of different field recordings and grandiose loops take turns throughout the whole work. This brings about a dynamics of contrasts: the concrete and the abstract, the particular and the general, the mundane and the exalted, and so on. The phases of string loops take up most of the album and evoke a yearning feeling of distance, grand and epic. The title, Engaged Touches, however, refers to quite the opposite, the close and intimate. It feels as if it is these kinds of touches that the string loops wailingly, albeit very gracefully, long for. This is exactly the kind of powerful romanticism that seems to define so much of Celer?s work. Because of the heavy presence of string loops Engaged Touches reminds me of some of Celer?s earlier works. I would call it a classic Celer piece, if it weren?t for the fact that their oeuvre spans only a few years back, and it would be too early to ponder the distinct phases and the internal relations in their output. Engaged Touches is another beautiful addition to the rapidly growing body of work by Celer ? an oeuvre that I already consider one of the most important in modern ambient music. http://www.experimedia.net/index.php?main_page=product_music_info&cPath=8_47&products_i -- -- Jeremy Bible --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Experimedia - record label + mailorder shop + a/v arts (est.2000) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- experimedia.net jeremybible.com jbjh.experimedia.net myspace.com/experimedia --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From j.m.duarte.r at gmail.com Fri Mar 20 15:32:23 2009 From: j.m.duarte.r at gmail.com (Joao Ricardo) Date: Fri, 20 Mar 2009 19:32:23 +0000 Subject: [microsound-announce] [EdP006] Lapa - Nu Message-ID: <8925530d0903201232t4b18894el8540c49d6a9a8cfe@mail.gmail.com> EdP - Editora do Porto presents: Lapa - Nu Free download @ http://doporto.pt.to -- http://ocp.pt.vu -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... With the new label Auricular Records aims to explore and provide a vehicle for the release of a new canvas of soundart focused on field recordings. There will be four separate divisions to Ambit Din in order to properly classify the releases: ethnikos - a way to document oral presentations and ethnomusicology naturae - aimed at the collection of environmental recordings and bioacoustics envirounen - audio documentation of environments such as workplaces and cityscapes arte - avant-garde, experimental and ambient music projects utilizing field recordings as the source material Initially, there are plans to release a small number of compilations that include recordings from each categorization together to serve as an overall introduction to the label. Releases will be limited, hand numbered editions. We are actively seeking artists interested in participating - anyone interested can contact Ambit Din through Auricular Records at info at auricular dot com or read over our submission guidelines. Call for Submissions General Information Auricular Audio Magazine is a series of experimental, ambient, soundart music compilations with a unique 20 year history featuring a worldwide roster of musicians. The releases will be available as both CDr and digital distribution through popular online sites (iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody etc etc). Deadlines There is no deadline as the production of Auricular Audio Magazine volumes will be ongoing. Media Qualifications We will accept media of any length, however, if your piece is more than 15 minutes we might (but might not) ask you to edit the piece or resubmit an excerpt of the song. The desired length of each piece is approximately 6-15 minutes long but we do make exceptions - sometimes even absurd ones. For full length release submissions track length is limited to 70 mins or what will fit on a CD. Your submission may include artwork, slideshows, short films, digital media files (essays, flash files, documents). The releases will be available as Hybrid CDr (digital media and audio) when necessary but non-audio submissions will not be available in digitally distributed versions - we will build a web component for each release and include this material when possible for purchasers of the digital download format. Media Use and Changes We reserve the right to master your piece before we publish it. If we require any "edits" we will ask you to do them. You retain all copyrights and ownership to your songs. Therefore, you must own your songs to submit them. Submission Formats and Guidelines Physical Submission Format To be kind to the earth - we prefer digital submissions (contact us for more info)...Please clearly mark your submsission with your artist name, the names of the songs, and the order of the songs. THANK YOU! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ /*framework*/ - phonography / field recording; contextual and decontextualized sound activity presented by patrick mcginley two playlists coming your way this week - sorry for the delay in getting details for the show from the 15th out to you. i'm sure you've been waiting on the edge of your seats. a dense show of great sounds, again many that have been waiting patiently for the airwaves for some time. meanwhile this week's sheepish edition of /*framework:afield*/ has been produced in the uk by *felicity ford*: *S H E E P * Featuring highlights from Greg Wagstaff, the Sounding Dartmoor project and the excellent Freesounds archive, this episode of Framework has largely been arranged around Felicity Ford's sheep-related recordings. Since October 2008, Felicity has been researching the history of the British Wool Trade in writing, knitting and sound-recording. Her explorations have taken her into the bleak Romney Marshes where wool was smuggled out of the country for hundreds of years, into smallscale spinning mills, and on the daily rounds of a Wensleydale flock keeper. Growing her own crop of Woad and recording the process of turning it into a dye, she has also met with sheep farmers and learned about the related Indigo-dyeing process. The sonic aspects of the British Wool Trade recording journey so far have been like wool itself; full of the stories of people, animals and the land, full of the loudness, earthiness, laughter and straightforwardness that accompany hard work, scratchy like the kemp in fleece, and sometimes - like knitting - repetitive, soft, and quiet. Felicity Ford's websites: http://www.thedomesticsoundscape.com http://www.theknittingforecast.com Websites related to the show: http://www.woolcraftwithwensleydale.com/ http://www.diamondfibres.co.uk/ http://sounds.bl.uk/ http://www.freesound.org/index.php http://prickyourfinger.com/ meanwhile i also have a call for works to let you know about - for all you experienced phonographers or aspiring newcomers, resonancefm's own *joel cahen* is looking for works for his /*wet sounds*/ program of underwater performances. have a look at his open call for works here: http://www.newtoy.org/wetsounds. mention /*framework*/ for an automatic deadline extension until the 20th of april. again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! The resulting forty-plus minutes unfolds with razor-sharp precision, skirting the boundaries of silence and composed aural events before focusing on a cycling drone whose interplay with the other sound sources becomes the primary focus of the piece ? the central nerve in a system of sonic balance. A mesmerizing work where the sounds "emanate from distant calls of guitar, sharply cracked electronics, alien field recordings and a variety of other less identifiable sources." The cover art is by renowned Australian photographer Marian Drew, from her 'Still Lives' series. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.sirr-ecords.com reviews The quickly rising star of Lawrence English delivers another musical baby.(...) English offers us a seven course dinner with a carefully balanced meal. The microsound of before seems to be left behind, if only partly, and to be replaced by a more heavy approach. The odd linkage between metal guitar music and microsound - hearing is believing. It can be done, and English does it. (Vital Weekly, NL) Seven tracks of quite fascinating and thickened sound; the occasionally-melodic electronic music is supplemented with hazy guitar plucks and strums, the latter sometimes delivered by the pink digits of axe-wielding Benjamin Thompson. This moving music is far less wispy than we usually associate with the minimal Lawrence, with track titles that hint at missed opportunities and pleas for compassion in a friendless world. If we fail to hear his call for a renewed humanity, perhaps we?ll end up like the dead birds that are painted on the covers with such unforgiving detail by artist Marian Drew; beautiful in appearance, but lifeless. The image of the dead parrot (no Monty Python jokes please), arrayed without explanation on a white napkin with a single apple, is particularly affecting. His main subject is the feedback and instrument - the no-input mixing boards. His electroacoustic work is full of minimalistic, almost "static" pieces, created with extremely high frequencies. His main interest, represented in his works are the micro frequency "fights" and the "presence" of the sound (some of the pieces are "quiet" for some of the audience due to the frequencies used, but the feeling of a present sound is always noticeable). He has performed in many european cities and between July and September will do his first asian tour in places like Indonesia, Laos, Macau, Vietnam and more. He has played and done collaborations with artists like Hiroshi Hasegawa (Japan), Peter Gossweiler (Brazil), Bernhard Gal (Austria), Belgrade Noise Society (Serbia), Konstrukt (Turkey) and many more. All presented music works should fit one of the following categories: 1. *Works for recorded media alone * 2. * Works for recorded media and instrumental solo * Works should be produced using any conceivable analog device processing tools (pedals, no input mixers, analog synthesizers, custom built devices). The use of computer or any digital device (except a DAW for the tracking/mixing) is *not allowed*. The use of working techniques and hardware should be documented with a detailed document in *PDF* format to be included within the work submission. A description of the composition poetics and aesthetic goals should be included for release purposes as well. The produced work should be rendered as a stereo *44.1 kHz*, *24 bit*, *WAV (or any Quicktime-compatible)* sound file. The use of instrumental soloist is limited to one of the following instruments: *Violin*, *Violoncello*, *Double bass*, *Flute*, *Clarinet in B*, *Bass Clarinet*, *Soprano* and *Alto Saxophone*. The score should be submitted together with the recording in one of the following formats: *.sib* or *PDF*. If the soloist is not available at the moment of the recording session, a quick render via a virtual instrument is allowed and welcome. In this case, please send us two different sound files, one including the simulated solo performance and a ?clean? copy of the electroacoustic work. Synesthesia Recordings will provide the required soloist for the final Recording, Mix, and Mastering sessions. The production will take place at *Millenium Audio Recording Studios* in Rome, Italy. Compositions should last around 15-20 minutes ca. A personal *BIO* of around 100 words is requested as well. The deadline for submissions is the *31st October 2009*. The *reading panel* will be announced during the second half of May 2009. Winners will be announced in December 2009. The selected works will be published by Synesthesia Recordings during the first quarter of 2010. For any more questions contact us at *submissions at synesthesiarecordings dot com * http://www.synesthesiarecordings.com/docs/Call_for_electroacoustic_works_2009.pdf * *?Synesthesia is a crossing of the senses.? * **This label is to be intended as a repository of live improvised electroacoustic works.* The main goal is to retrieve the late Renaissance praxis of *?Ricercare?* intended as exploration of a technical device playing it, subverting it in different ways. So this kind of *?Musica Ricercata?* should be affected by individual approaches to improvisation with sound materials of any kind, samples, electronic devices, pure sine generators, transducers. The local and momentary gesture generates a relational sequenced processes that defines the sonic path from start to the end. This recordings have to be intended as a ?document? or *Simulacra* of a solo or collective performance but not as the performance itself (which is affected by causality relationships and other environmental and statistical phenomena). The Project is maintained, supervised by *U.S.O Project* in collaboration with many other audio-visual artists. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... L'improvisation pour mat?riau et au final sept pi?ces entre musique concr?te et musique ?lectronique. Diverses, soutenues et vari?es..." Frans de Ward writes on Vital Weekly about Doves Days in Palermo: " ... I thought that especially the mixtures of real instruments with the laptop of Sciajno was quite nice. These pieces had a nice sense of free improvisation and microscopic bleeps and hiss..." [BW10] Sequens Sequenza for Ensemble of 16 elements Composed by Domenico Sciajno in 1999 Instrumentation: flute, harp, voice, piano, trombone, viola, Oboe, violin, clarinet, trumpet, guitar, basson, accordion, alto and soprano sax, contrabbasso Jeremy Kerns, writes on Ampersand about Sequens: "... this one blew me away - a concept plunderphonics album taht works brilliantly [...] Here Sciajno shows his mastery of how to overlap, superimpose and separate the tracks in a counterpoint [...]. What could have been a mishmash of sound becomes a strong modern chamber work through the combination of Berio's original composition and the skill of Sciajno. [...] this collaboration between two composers is astounding - Sciajno has remained completely faithful to Berio's compositions by 'merely' cutting/pasting them (and his own sequence fits) and created a new Berio work which was always there but never drawn out". Read the full review here [BW11] Hyaline Kim Cascone [Laptop] Domenico Sciajno [Max/Msp + Live Processing] Frans de Ward writes on Vital Weekly about Hyaline: "... Both are in fine shape here... It moves away from the free laptop play ground, of letting sounds run wild and free, but the five pieces sound composed... instead all [is] live and without editing, which is hard to believe... A solid work all around, two highly skilled masters at work. Jerome Noetinger writes on Metamkine Catalogue about Hyaline: " ... [BW12] Diospyros Gene Coleman [Bass Clarinet] Domenico Sciajno [Max/Msp + Live processing] Frans de Ward writes on Vital Weekly about Diospyros: "... Four pieces of highly improvised music here, where Coleman plays the instrument and Sciajno picks up the sound and processes it in real time... the first two tracks are highly free pieces of music in which both the clarinet and the laptop produces an endless amount loose sounds. In 'Granadilla' however Sciajno waves together longer sustaining sounds and Coleman adds likewise longer sustaining clarinet sounds on top and it results in a powerful, intense piece of music..." Therefore, objects which are cross-platform and in Pd Extended should have priority over other solutions. * Tone should be neutral and informative. Remember that humor doesn't always translate well! ;-) * Our readers are assumed to have little to no background in either computer programming or digital signal processing, which much of the existing documentation takes for granted. That's why this manual is necessary! Please keep this in mind when explaining things. * Please use existing the Audio Tutorials, Installing and Getting Started chapters as a style guide. * Keep the chapters small and self-contained. Ideally, chapters from this manual could even be "remixed" into other FLOSS Manuals. * Explain any jargon or technical terminology in-line the first time you use it, and direct the reader to appropriate other chapters/manuals when necessary. * Please enter any new technical terms in the Glossary (we need to agree on global format for glossary terms!). * Screenshots: ---Resolution? (Adam and I will work on this on Monday) ---Please upload any complex patches, and make sure to label screenshot with appropriate filename (see Audio Tutorials for examples) ---Please keep explanatory text in the manual rather than only in the screenshot, so that it can be text-searched by readers. ---Please use anti-aliased fonts! * All the chapters are moderated by Derek Holzer & Adam Hyde. Your contributions will only be visible in the editing section until they meet these guidelines, and after that they can be published to the main page. Please let us know when your chapter(s) are ready for publishing and we'll look them over. EXISTING CHAPTERS WHICH NEED HELP: # DataflowTutorials ---this section needs a lot of help in terms of style and content!!!!! Tone is very informal, which doesn't help convey the information. ---give titles to screenshots so that readers can tell which patches match which images (some do this, some don't...) ---"Math": examples/discussion of [expr]??? ---"Order of connecting and [trigger]": explain the patches in-line, rather than only in comments in screenshots (so that text is searchable, copy/pasteable..) ---Luka's screencaps are very aliased, to the point where you can't read the ~ in the object names. Should they be redone at new resolution or with antialiasing? ---Possible janitors: Derek Holzer, Adam Hyde # PureGlossary ---format of object names = [italics in square brackets], must be formatted correctly ---format of glossary words in general text: we don't have one yet. Bold on first use in chapter maybe? Needs formatting all through text. # ListofObjects ---incomplete, please add more libs ---maybe more discussion of externals needed as well ---formatting of object names? # PureLinks ---always welcome MORE CHAPTERS/SECTIONS TO DO (+ suggestions?): * GEM (in order of importance)(Derek can provide example patches for much of this) ---Basic VJ mixer (2 x [gemhead]-[pix_film]-[alpha]-[colorRGB]-[pix_texture]-[rectangle] with an alpha-crossfader)(+ platform specific codec info) ---Live camera input (same as VJ mixer but with [pix_video], with platform specific info on USB/firewire inputs--what works & what doesn't) ---VJ effects (using the various pix objects) ---Basic 3D (that actually does something interesting, rather than just show a sphere or a cube) ---Basic movement tracking w/ [pix_blob] ---GEM/video optimization/troubleshooting tips (see Troubleshooting section of existing Pd FLOSS Manual) * MIDI tutorial ---hardware:keyboards, sliders, etc, ---objects: all MIDI objects ---routing: input + output to/from devices or other programs * Patching strategies ---Reusable abstractions ($0 etc) ---GoP + other GUI creation strategies ---Preset saving systems (Frank?) * Audiofile manipulation (Derek can provide examples, possibly also work with www.pd-tutorial.com with permission?) ---sfread, readsf, sfplay, etc ---tables + tabplay, tabread, etc ---oneshot playback without/with pitch shifting ---looping without/with pitchshifting ---granulation without/with pitchshifting ---Extended objects ([xplay~], [xgroove~]...are these stable? In my experience, no...) * Realtime audio effects tutorial ---delays: single tap, multitap, pitch-shifting, tuned comb filter, etc ---filters: [hip~], [lop~], [bp~], [moog~], IEM lib filters [vcf~]/[bp],[hp],[lp], difference between audio signal and message controlled, building with ggee objects [bandpass],[llowpass],[highpass] or [biquad~] (resources for coefficients?) * Sensor tutorial (HC?) ---[hid]/[hidin]/[pduino] ---simple circuit diagrams + photos (voltage divider examples: potentiometer, photoresistor, etc)(hacked gamepads) * Networked data ---netsend/netreceive ---OSC ---flash server ---shell ---python externals ---others? * PDP/PiDiP ---configuration info for OSX (+ poor performance disclaimer!) ---basic VJ ---networked streaming etc * Procedural Audio tutorial? (Andy?) * RJDJ tutorial?
