1. New Releases

Sublamp | Breathletters
de5022 | 39:19 | CD-R | 250

1. Echolalic
2. Dust Lessons
3. Pattered and Unwound
4. Like Spiders on the Fox's Tongue
5. Spitting Color
6. Monophoneme
7. Mouseblood
8. Starvation Tapes
9. Glossolalic

Breathletters explores the concept of harmonic sound as a form of
pre-language emotional communication. Like unweaving words to
expose the phonemes inside them, hidden details in the timbral
characteristics of acoustic instruments (glockenspiel, guitar,
violin, bowed electric bass, contact mics on bowed and hammered
metal) are unwound, frozen and expanded. These elemental sounds
are combined with binaural field recordings, and arranged
intuitively into a set of nine tracks suggesting the emotional
signals sent across an environment by reciprocal minds, imagined
letters in the alphabet of empathy.

This release is now available through the DER Shop

Jamie Drouin | A Three Month Warm Up
de5023 | 77:00 | CD-R | 250

A Three Month Warm Up uses 124 individual field recordings made
in an outdoor public square in Victoria (British Columbia,
Canada) over a three month period, and is inspired by the
cacophony of notes played by a symphony during warm up, where a
single unified tone emerges out of the various instruments and
voices. In playing back the ambient recordings, filtering them
down to their essential 'notes' and layering the events, Drouin
creates a sonic signature of the space, as if a residual echo of
everything that occurred during those three months has been
trapped within the structure.

A Three Month Warm Up was a site specific work created for the
Art Gallery of Greater Victoria's Assume Nothing exhibition
January-May, 2009. Curated by Lisa Baldissera.

This release is now available through the DER Shop

2. Upcoming Events

Clinker | On the Other Side...
Soundwave Festival

Ucluelet, Vancouver Island, BC
July 11th, 2009 11:30PM
[http://soundwavemusicfestival.ca/]

Clinker’s “On the Other Side...” explores Cohen’s continued
romance with the light and dark inside our human experience. An
audio-visual “deep listening” environment which draws from the
vast depths of emotion written into the words and music of
Leonard Cohen.

The lush bass tones of Cohen’s voice provide a point of departure
for our journey inside Clinker’s cinema of sound and light.
Drawing from years of experience in creating and manipulating
music and audio, Clinker deconstructs and reassembles Cohen’s
voice into surreal “bass-scapes” using his unique and
sophisticated system of analogue and digital electronics.
Clinker’s creation will bathe the audience in an array of Cohen
’s “golden” vocal chords augmented with a connection between
sonic and visual details. Specially designed sub-sonic sound
frequencies (created from Cohen’s voice itself) reinforce the
experience of extreme sound-movement through the body.

Yann Novak | In Residence
July 18 - September 5

Las Cienegas Projects
2045 S. La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90034
[http://lascienegasprojects.org]

In Residence is an ongoing work in-progress exploring the
relationship between sound, narrative, and location. It is a
series of experiments in various forms: audiovisual performance,
installation, and CD/DVD publication constructed from
photographs and recordings, collected during three artist
residencies in fall of 2007. Through digital manipulation, the
source materials are transformed; a translation of experience,
from the literal to the romantic.

In Residence 6 focuses specifically on the rain soaked month
spent at the Espy Foundation residency in Oysterville, WA,
October 2007. Using the steady drone of the constant rain as a
point of departure, the work explores the emotional response to
this prolonged period of rain through the construction of a
melancholic and meditative narrative.

In Residence 6 will be presented as a 4.1 channel audio
installation with single channel video accompaniment.

3. Recent Releases

Yann.Novak | Relocation.Catalog
smlEditions | 40:32 | 24p. BOOK + CD-R | 100

In Relocation, Yann Novak explores the multitude of emotional
states experienced during and after the relocation of one’s life
. Utilizing his unique technique of transforming a simple
environmental recording into something emotional and visceral,
Novak creates three installations, each using a different step
of the moving process as a point of departure. In all three
works, Novak alters the timbre of the recordings but not the
length. By doing so he let the subtly changing character of the
original recordings dictate how the pieces will unfold. The
pieces are spared formal compositional interjection from the
artist and allowed to exist in the limbo between documentation
and composition.

Relocation.Catalog contains the essay "Striation, Erosion,
Deformation, Recollection: The Erased Field Recordings of Yann
Novak" by Christopher DeLaurenti which takes a look into the
work and process of Yann Novak and draws some interesting
comparisons. Included with the catalog is Relocation.Edits, a CD
containing abridged versions of the sound works associated with
each of the installations in the Relocation exhibition. The
catalog also includes preparation and installation photos of
Novak's previous works.

Celer | Breeze of Roses
de5021 | 47:46 | 5" CD-R | 250

"Breeze of Roses downplays the “real world” aspect of the release
and instead transmutes those originating sounds into a largely
synthetic-sounding and ethereal weave of wavering tones (the
faint rustle of environmental noise is occasionally audible but
faintly). Though the work includes six “Imprecise Parts” it
unfolds as an uninterrupted vista of softly stirring sound.
Curlicues of wind gently blow across the tonal drift at around
the thirty-two minute mark and a slight hint of industrial noise
simmers near-imperceptibly below the surface elsewhere, but
Breeze of Roses sonically suggests the empyrean more than any
earthly locale."
– Textura

"The resonant atmospheres within Breeze of Roses are superb and
it's one of those pieces of music that gradually builds and
flows into several distinct parts. As ever there's a sense of
melody that pervades every moment of this work, but it's joined
by a creeping dissonance that brings into stark relief. Over the
course of the album you'll be gently massaged, lightly
challenged and totally invigorated. "
– Smallfish

1. +ROOM-ROOM Live at The Henry Art Gallery

Recorded live at the Henry Art Gallery auditorium during the
opening reception for Novak and Drouin's installation +ROOM-ROOM
, the performance re-contextualizes the sounds from the
installation. Now abstracted from the installation rooms, the
sounds take on new potential meanings as the artists build a
dialogue of tones and textures in an improvisational environment
. The performance is recorded using omnidirectional microphones
placed on the stage. The result is a mix of the effect of the
room on the sound, and the physical interaction with the
performers' equipment.

Son of Rose | All In
Blanket Fields | 5" CD | 700

"Though organ isn't listed as one of the instruments, an organ
-like sound functions as the nucleus in many tracks and as a
result a subtly transcendent aura pervades the release. That
organ emphasis also imbues the music with an Eastern and
psychedelic aura, perhaps most clearly felt during “All In,” for
example, where one can easily imagine a singing group sitting in
a circle within a temple chanting along to the organ drone while
it glistens and smolders."
– Textura

"'Falling Forward' starts the album with beatific shimmering
drones and what sounds like pitched-up wind chimes. It's
understatedly gorgeous and calming, conjuring a mystical healing
-music sensation. 'Movement Transposed' sounds like an altered
dulcimer or harp riff ka-chinging amid steel-wool whorls, while
'Toward Sensation' is a stellar, metallic drone, akin to
Charlemagne Palestine's Bösendorfer organ, honed to a needle
-sharp tone. 'RADii' is quite possibly the sound of Saturn's
rings forming. 'Fragrant' evokes Xenakis's oblique atonal
thrusts and corkscrewing diminuendos; it's a kind of a skeletal,
electroacoustic dub and a disturbing anomaly from the rest of
the disc..."
