Following some conversations about 18 months ago, concerning a collaboration with actor and sound recordist Joseph Young, the topic of a 'conversation piece' came up. Sadly it never happened. But then I had the invitation from Patrick McGinley to curate a radio programme for the Framework Afield series. So the idea evolved of a panel discussion - a conversation across time and place, featuring four environmental sound artists I had met at some point, even if only fleetingly. Consequently Lisa Whistlecroft, Phill Harding, Joseph Young and Lucy Gibson were invited to join me in a conversation and panel discussion. The Brief: Each artist would choose a sound work of another artist that had influenced them or had inspired them (the call), plus a work of their own that had been created as a result of hearing that work (the response) - hence the concept - Call and Response. We would listen to each others Call and Response and comment. OK, a standard conventional panel discussion scenario. Sure, been there done that.... but the twist was that we would record the programme live in the woods with sound replay equipment on location, and each of us would record our own individual binaural perception of the experience simultaneously during the recording. For the location I chose the pastoral magnificence of Shining Cliff Woods near Ambergate in Derbyshire, a location that I was familiar with, and which has provided me with many happy hours recording experiences over the years. The Programme: My ideas evolved as the deadline for the event (Sunday 29th March) gradually loomed nearer. As we were all individual environmental sound artists, with different approaches, we would walk in to the recording area from different directions through the woods 'entering by the Four Winds' (North, South, East, West), as it were, each of us recording the our own binaural trajectory through the woodland. The 'Theme Tune' for the programme would be excerpts from the recordings of birdsong by Ludwig Koch, from an original set of 1937 BBC 78's I had acquired many years ago, and played live on a mechanical HMV wind-up gramophone - as a tribute to the fact that Ludwig Koch nearly always recorded mechanically. Playback of the guests pieces would be on a portable CD player with speaker system, using a 12v car battery to mains inverter for power. Then at the end we would all walk off in different directions - scattering to the Four Winds, so to speak, while each of us would continue to record for a few minutes. The Recording: And so the day came. Sadly Lucy had had an unfortunate accident a couple of days before, was totally incapacitated and could not make the recording. There were thoughts of re-arranging, but for a number of reasons it was impractical. However, there were consequences. Phill was going to have a lift with Lucy, as he does not drive, so now he would have to come by train to Derby and I would pick him up from the station on the day. Meanwhile the major part of the gear for the recording would be carried to the location by some intrepid helpers - John Sampson, Sam Simpson and Jon Simpson, (for whom extreme thanks are due) carried some distance through the woods and set up near an exquisite small lake. Oh, and by the way we had also decided to video the proceedings for good measure! So I arrived fresh and enthusiastic, with Phill, at about 11:30 in the morning to find my guests and the others completely shattered having collectively carried all the gear (including seats, tables, 2 car batteries, speakers, CD player, sound recording equipment, video equipment, sandwiches, drinks...) from the car park at one end of the woods to the recording location. Having given my profuse apologies, and being reassured by everyone that it was "nothing... really!", we caught our breath and made a start. Anyway, to cut a long story short, we made the recording, (twice) and generally speaking we were all happy with the overall result. The Edit: When I reviewed the recordings it turned out that the first, and best recording, including the walk-ins and walk-outs lasted about an hour and a half. Rather more than the prescribed absolute maximum of 55:40! So things would have to go. Out went the walk-ins and walk-outs, still had to lose about 15 minutes. Decided to cut a lot of my intros and comments and focus on the guests. Still about 7 minutes too long. I wanted to preserve their conversations and comments primarily, so further cuts had to be made to the works brought by the guests, and I hereby apologise for the inevitable editing of these works - the time constraints of the programme would not permit their full length versions being aired. So finally, after much agonising, I had cut the length down to 55:37, phew! But it wasn't easy and I wanted to preserve a lazy, casual, real time feel to the whole proceedings. But there was more to the edit than just getting the length right. I wanted to incorporate the different binaural perspectives of myself and each guest into the recording, so editing involved both switching perspectives between myself and individual artist's recordings, (in the video / film editing tradition of switching between different camera perspectives) as well as running some sections in parallel - up to 4 binaural recordings are running in parallel in some places, so spatial ambiguities, and variable phasing effects, due to deliberately slipped time alignments, are also encouraged in the edit, which becomes a composition in itself! A Thought: Ultimately the programme is about us all inhabiting an outdoor environment and the 'call and response' therefore clearly extends into this realm. And this is really the object of the work, to take the form of a panel discussion out of the formality of a studio or other enclosed venue and allow the event to unfold in the openness of an outdoor environment, where the random and unpredictable intrusion of environmental sounds into our conversation and the effect of the environment on our listening experience becomes the real focus of the exercise. The result is both phonographic and documentary, creative and inspirational. And the fact that each of us has a totally unique and beautiful experience of the whole makes it relevant to us all. Once again, I would like to thank my guests on the day, Phill Harding, Lisa Whistelcroft and Joseph Young, for their invaluable contributions to the event, and Wishing Lucy Gibson all the best for a speedy recovery. again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! framework 354 rue de l'andelle 27910 perruel france info at frameworkradio.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------ framework intro submissions: 1) take yourself and an audio recorder to a location of your choice 2) record for /AT LEAST/ one minute before you - 3) read aloud the following text: *welcome to framework. framework is a show consecrated to field recording, and its use in composition. field recording, phonography, the art of sound hunting; open your ears and listen!* */[3b) please also feel free to translate this text into your native tongue!] /* 4) continue your recording for /AT LEAST/ two minutes after you have finished speaking 5) post the recording to us on any format, or send us an mp3 thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ drop a note to info at frameworkradio.net to be added to or removed from this mailing list -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Scott plays guitar which Wright uses as raw material for creating real-time sound environments in which the guitar can move, the chosen path of the guitar laying the groundwork for the next sonic environment created by the computer to which the guitar reacts to in turn. Hence Nest attempts to circumvent traditional modes of improvisation, by creating a human feedback loop in which the players play not so much their instruments, but rather each other ? a loop which finds the players relating not TO each other, but rather THROUGH each other. Ever inwards. Nest is concerned with principals of balance and dissolution of the individual ego. Nest attempts to work as a unified organism, dissolving the contributions of the individual into an amorphous evolving sound object. Nest sets processes in motion and lets them run their course. Nest trusts sound completely. Nest has previously self-released collaborations with MHFS and Tim Coster in small CDR editions. This LP is their first release as an unaccompanied duo. Wright lives in Auckland, New Zealand where he performs solo and in the duo Cathedrals (with Tim Coster). Scott currently resides in Los Angeles, California where he works in the duo Metal Rouge with Helga Fassonaki. He works solo under the name Un Ciego and in the duos Golden Krone (with Rohan Evans) and Huzun (with Tim Coster). www.cmr.co.nz ------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------- Richard Francis 41 New North Road, Eden Terrace Auckland 1021, New Zealand www.richardfrancis.net.nz rf at richardfrancis.net.nz ------------------------------------------------------- -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The work is a glitchy, granular folktronic song called "Post Digital Future" about cyberculture The work will be used as part of my media arts studies here at UTS in Sydney and as I am a poor student artist, I cant pay you but I will give you full credit and provide you with a copy of the track on completion. I know this is a big ask but I assure you all it's for a good cause, my art!!! The idea is to ask different people based around the world within cyberspace to give a short 1 to 6 word statement on cyberspace, the net, technology, the philosophy of applied technology, cyber observations or to just say hi from wherever you are. I will leave it up to you. I want to create the sense of global cyber interaction. Some examples might be, "this is (you) Hi from (where ever you are)" or "Short drive by statement on aspects of cyberculture" Anything that comes to mind, in English or your native tongue (please include a translation). Just keep the quotes short fast and intelligible, so I can fit as many in as I can and stack them. Audio from your webcam mic is fine (the less bad noise as opposed to good noise the better ). Upload to a location of your choice, a free server like Mediafire free/ rapidshare or email it to me as an attachment as an MP3. What ever you are comfortable with so I can retrieve it for remediation. To date he six releases on offer, of which '[/end]' is the latest. He works with a limited set of soundsources: sine waves and white noise. That may sound a bit too much like Ryoji Ikeda, and yes, Mugen seems inspired by especially the 'Matrix' release of Ikeda, but luckily enough he finds enough ways of his own to create something that may indeed not be top-new and innovative, but nevertheless he has a couple of interesting pieces to offer. Maybe eleven is a bit too much, even when the tracks are rather concise, but sometimes the pieces are a bit ambient, hoovering in various frequencies available in his sine-waves, but there are also pieces of rhythm, and here Mugen seems to expand his ears to the world of minimal techno, such as in '[/dub]', which seems to be a pastiche of Pan Sonic rhythms and Ikeda sine waves. Mugen's sound might be a bit too late, but a couple of years ago it would have fitted nicely along the microwave tag - which nobody uses anymore, so that might be a bit of a dead-end. However, he presents enough variation in his pieces to make '[/end]' a very nice CDR indeed. (FdW) Vital Weekly more news coming soon... Cost: EUR 10 Please email m at 1010.co.uk to reserve a place (strictly limited) http://www.1010.co.uk/org/workshop.html This workshop combines three of the basic building blocks of the longer Neanderthal Electronics workshop (TL072 op-amp comparator, 4093 gated oscillator & LM386 audio amplifier) to create a very crude, caveman-style analog computer for the processing of vocal input through a microphone. Participants will learn some analog and digital electronics basics to create an experimental prototype on the solderless breadboard, then recreate the circuit with permanent connections. They are also expected to bring their own box, case or other object in which to construct the final circuit. The last part of the workshop will touch on how this circuit can be expanded later on to include all kinds of mixers, modulators, distortions and filters through the use of other cheap, easily obtained parts. As always we are stocked up with new reviews and features on a host of innovative noise makers for your listening reading pleasure. Furthernoise issue July 2009 http://www.furthernoise.org/index.php?iss=80 "Infrequency Modulators" (feature) Infrequency is Jamie Drouin and Lance Olsen's platform for small editions of minimalist soundworks. It's been true to its name in terms of releases, a sizeable sample of which follows. Most notable is a keynote compilation, striking both for its archaeological concept and its imaginative conceit, uniting polarities of primitive and hyper- modern recording. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=295 feature by Alan Lockett "A Quiet Reverie - Mark Peter Wright" (review) A Quiet Reverie is an exploration of the ruined abbeys of North East England. It explores the relationship between phonography, history, architecture and psychology by transporting the listener through sonic environments. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=301 review by Alex Young "Breathletters - Sublamp" (review) Los Angelos-based sound artist Ryan Connor uses the Sublamp monikor to craft an airy pastiche of glacially evolving soundscapes in his recent release Breathletters. He presents these conceptual sound works as unwinding sculptural elements, abstract in form, yet suggesting natural, environmental processes. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=300 review by Derek Morton "Escaping from Color, Rapoon Recomposed and Remixed - Various" (review) The Ulkraine based Quasi Pop label have been quietly releasing consistently innovative albums since 2001, and with a roster of a virtual who's who of the sound art fraternity, this latest offering is no exception. Escaping from Color, Rapoon Recomposed and Remixed is fifteen track compilation of contributions from various artists remixing audio from Rapoon's ?Tribal Sci Fi? CD-ROM. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=298 review by Roger Mills "Gity - Homework" (review) Homework is the project of one Andreas Lang from Munich and Gity is his first release on his own very interesting q-tonelabel.The philosophy is to release no specific style, although it's often rooted in minimalism, sound-experiments or abstraction, with one interesting limitation; they reject pure electronic music - it has to be partially recorded acoustically. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=293 review by Mark Francombe "Opus Spongebobicum & Frank Genius is Star Struck - Frank Rothkamm" (review) Citing Jean Paul Satre from the Critique of Dialectical Reason in the sleeve notes, 'the dialectic reveals itself only to [.....] an investigator who lives his investigation' very much defines the approach that I have come to expect from the one man label, composer, film maker and theorist Frank Rothkamm http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=299 review by Roger Mills "Persistent Repetition of Phrases - The Caretaker" (review) Under the moniker Install is an independent record label run out of New York. They specialize in experimental music and found sound., James Kirby puts out music that can perhaps be most appropriately described as quietly harrowing. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=297 review by SongMing Ang "Primal elements - Scott Baker" (review) Abre Ojos creates hypnotic dystopian meditations, where images from our collective past appear in mirrors, drawing the eye to the mandalic figure in the center. The focus is narrowed further with the deep drones that swell to fill the audio spectrum, ominous harbingers of a world pared to the primal elements. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=296 review by Caleb Deupree Roger Mills Editor, Furthernoise -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Diapason Gallery for Sound is dedicating the month of October to the exploration of the idea "Microsound", a technical term and also a musical genre. In honor of the 10th anniversary of the .microsound.org mailing list Diapason will present multi-channel installations, sound objects, performances, lectures, texts and other media in an effort to develop a survey on Microsound from today's post-digital perspective. Microsound is a term that encompasses explorations of sound on a time scale "shorter than musical notes". It includes subgenres such as Glitch music, granular synthesis, Lowercase sound, etc. About Diapason: Since 2001, Diapason has been devoted to the presentation of sound art. The gallery, located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, NY, contains two listening environments with state-of-the-art multi-channel sound systems: the "lounge" contains a 12 channel sound system placed asymmetrically around the space and the "gallery" is a focused listening environment with a high quality 8 channel system. Installation and performance proposals that consider site and spatialization as an important parameter will be favored. The fourth edition of make art ? What The Fork?! distributed and open practices in FLOSS art - will take place in Poitiers (FR), from the 7th to the 13th of December 2009. make art offers performances, presentations, workshops and an exhibition, focused on the encounter between digital art and free software. We're currently seeking new, innovative FLOSS works and projects: music and audiovisual performances, presentations, software demos, and installations. This year make art focuses on distributed and open practices in FLOSS art. 'What the fork?!' is about decentralisation. Forking is the new black. Forking, copying the source code of a project and continuing work on the copy instead of the original, used to have a bad reputation. It would split a project and its developer community in pieces, leading to different, often incompatible, projects. Wasted effort, rivalry and developer fights were all associated concepts. This is history. Forking a project with the intention to compete with it is another story, but the freedom to fork enables quick implementation of features and customization, bypassing acquiring committer status, bugfix or feature request protocol, working in a distributed way, together with others but not necessarily towards one goal, working from one source, cross-fertilising, inspiring, copying, patching, improving, experimenting, changing direction, and merging. This practice is boosted by decentralised software development tools, such as Darcs, Mercurial and Git. It's not about quick hacks, but about creating room to experiment, letting go of the one working copy and creating a multiplicity of ideas. Extended deadline : 22nd of July 2009. La quatri?me ?dition de make art ? And I have to admit, you are right that lower-case is not a subgenre of Microsound. But in my opinion, there are big overlaps. "Roden notes, 'lowercase is about a work that sits quietly awaiting discovery, as opposed to loudly calling attention to itself.' In other words, 'lowercase' music isn't so much about particular sounds or particular musical styles as it is about attitude" (from http://www.hauntedink.com/25/lowercasesound.html). And since Microsound is a technique or a technical focus, and lower-case mainly seems to referr to an atmosphere / attitude, there is a multitude of lower-case microsound. So it's true that one can't be classified under the other, but there is an interpenetration that is really fascinating to me. So I wanted to include the term in the call. Thanks for the clarification. Daniel. ----- Original Message ----- From: ben owen To: microsound Sent: Monday, July 13, 2009 5:57 AM Subject: Re: [microsound-announce] Call for microsound works hi David, On Jul 12, 2009, at 10:14 PM, Daniel Neumann wrote: Microsound is a term that encompasses explorations of sound on a time scale "shorter than musical notes". We're interested especially in writing on the practice of making, listening, and living with sound from artists who work primarily with sound. Please do not submit album reviews or other similar work. Letters on Sounds hopes to be a platform for people working in new ways with sound, especially as that might relate to a particular community, to share their approaches and experiences with others of a like mind. To submit, please send a short email to erik at luvsound.org with a two to ten sentence description of your piece, as well as a brief biographical statement. What is happening in Sarkozy's France is often depolorable, and these days the 'crisis' is often the easiest excuse to use when cutting budgets, often in the arts - and especially those of an experimlental nature. At Aligre Fm (93.1 Fm Paris), both 'Songs of Praise' and my program 'Audiometric' will be welcoming the team of the Instants Cahavires to speak about their situation and organise a petition about these cut backs in Septembre when Parisien's are back in town. The new Mayor of Montreuil, Dominique Voynet (the green party) doesnot seem to understand the international reputation that this small venue in Montreuilhas, nor the necessity to keep it open and running. There has been a series of police violence in Montreuil this last week as well. Armand Gatty's grandson, Joachim Gatty a 34 year old film-maker lost an eye due to abuse of the police's "self-defense" weapon known as the Flashball. The atmosphere in Montreuil has taken a very nasty turn these last three months. His studies of noise, silence and the fabric of recorded sound have been a major presence in the realm of electroacoustic music over the past ten years or so. In this instance Lopez collaborated with a host of regional sound artists, collecting field recordings from around the city, shaping them into streams of decontextualised noise that are typical of Lopez's more challenging brand of microsound. Salud!" Flyer: http://www.pueblonuevo.cl/images/flyer_m100.jpg ================================================================================= Hi Microsound !: Pueblo Nuevo Netlabel proudly presents "Mestizo Retocado", remixes album from Mika Martini & Friends. "Before moving on to something new - or, better said, moving deep into darkness and adventure in this sound working I've been into, I felt it was time for a last "turn of the screw" to melodies and sounds that have accompanied me the last couple of years... "Mestizo [pn014]" allowed me to open up an important path in my music work - thanks to it, I was able to meet new places, lots of people, and many talented, creative musicians, always welcoming it warmly and with good rapport. Now, this stands as a cherished but distant place, and, as a "waving goodbye" act, I invited a bunch of those friends to use this material the way I used it: absolutely free. Instead of talking about the music, I would prefer to say a few words about my fellows - who, finally, played (with) these tracks: we start with El Lazo Invisible's version for "Iniciacion"... many adventures we went through in Tijuana, Mexicali, Valparaiso, and Lima, having some tacos de ostiones and emparedados de jamon, plus loads of MSN chatting... a real genius the man is. Next, there's "Matorrales" by Tonossepia: I met him years ago, demo in hand, in some club here in Santiago. Since then, I've became very respectful of this restless and outspoken rhythm maker - grande "Tono". Then, we hear "Procesion", filled with Materia Prima and his "Jaiva Trigger"' breakbeat - this is a device he showed us during a "Chiste" session in ?u?oa. Victor and his machine. Victor, a real cultural animator, always positive and energized. "MTRLS", in Gerardo Figueroa's hands, mutates and surprises, just like when we did that first-third radio show pilot together - is there any piece of information freed from GFR's privileged memory?... Now we move into a new "Matorrales" version, this time by Anders Blickmann, citizen from Portugal I haven't met personally yet, though I'm sure I will, for his love of music and his remixer qualities have surprised me many times - a new, wonderful feature of today's social networks'... Francisco Pinto comes up with his version for "Toc_11", loaded with synths, just like that demo he brought called "Warm Milk [pn020]", waiting for us to listen to it. Francisco, and his long-time-remembered "Pizza Bar-B-Q". Francisco and his always nice, warm sounding... But "Toc_11" has a B-side, this time by "Phk", "death foley", or whatever alias Felipe Conejeros picks up for the occasion; Felipe and his projects, always interesting, always taking me... us, to new territory. Let's stop here for a minute: we're listening to "Huayno del fin de los tiempos", by Usted No!, from my friend Claudio Perez (hence the "Mika Martini y Amigos" heading). We've been acquainted with Claudio since those times I used to run away from stage, in order not to play... now he's one of the forces behind what I am as a musician... Remember the time we were in Krakow, starvingly eating those Shawarmas while a light snow began to fall?... Now we're listening to Doma Tornados' "Whyno", a new project by Tanox, whom we met via his remarkable "Astronomia de Balcon [pn026]" - we'll have some Sangria drinks when we met in Barcelona in a (near) future. Then comes "Whyno" by El Remolon, grande Remolon, one of the characters who gave Pueblo Nuevo a new color, we spent a wonderful time celebrating the label's Third Anniversary, after burying my father, who had died just days before... But tracklist keeps on rollin', and Anders Blickmann is back again with his own "Whyno" version, with more groove, more energetic, for blowing the blues away and keeping head up high. The end comes with Lluvia Acida' "Despedida", a farewell that, at the same time, is always an invitation to meet again, for Rafael and Hector, despite living in the farthest south of the continent, are part of my musical history... we share more than just a lean towards rescuing our ancestors' sounds: we share a dream... and more than just a project! Lluvia Acida is the beginning and the end of this adventure; to them, and to all fellows who have shared all these years with me, this work is dedicated. Salud!" We are proud to present our new soundwork on Clinical Archives ! * A HYPNOTIC VERSUS TIME * Anton Mobin : Micros + Larsenophone Thomas Thiery (Th-Th): Laptop + modular patch Th-Th (Matohawk) and Anton Mobin, laud both a radical practice of the improvisation. They create an entity which grows rich of the contrast of the numeric treatments and synthesis of Th-Th and Anton Mobin's analogical manipulations. These two approaches converge on a hypnotic and totally intuitive intensity. A Hypnotic Versus Time is a new improvised session by the two artists, and took place in the Maizing studio in Paris on May 20th, 2009 and diffused simultaneously on the webradio KKWNE. Site page of THAM Duo: http://duo-tham.blogspot.com/ DOWNLOAD & LISTEN Th-Th (Marseille-France) : http://www.th-th.fr Thomas Thiery, as an artist, concerns himself particularly with the sound medium. After his physics degree, he continued with his studies about sound and image in the ? Universit? de Provence ?. At the same time, he got in touch with graphic programming in general, and more particularly with the software Pure Data. Equipped with sensors, he collaborated as a sound programmer for audiovisual installations and dance performances. With Thierry Coduys, he completed his training at the Kitchen in Paris and worked on graphic scores with the help of Pure data and IanniX. Since then, he has focused his sound research on new forms of musical writing. To continue his work, he particularly relies on free and open source software which give him more open advantages. In 2006, still willing to explore other sound approaches, he directed himself towards improvisation techniques and created the duo Aide Auditive with Mysth-R. Since 2007, he studies Electroacoustic composition in Marseille. In 2008, he created some open project like Blank Pages and Larseneurs. Anton Mobin (Paris-France) : http://audioblog.arteradio.com/anton_mobin Self-taught musician, he turns very fast to an experimental practice with an approach done wonders for the self-confidence on improvised music for an intuitive music. He used to play with the collective H.A.K. and more with affinities; with Ayato in the improvised duet called ?Crash Duo". Very productive, Anton Mobin diversifies all the broadcasting modes for his music, and it is in Internet that he finds an appropriate answer to his bulimia, of the webradio, by way of netlabels, audioblog of Arte, collaborative projects on Internet, compilations... We find him on a large part of these virtual places where the improvised music is going full swing. ----------------------------------------------- Thanks for your time HAVE A NICE DAY ! Postgraduate researchers working in live electronics, from any perspective, are encouraged to submit abstracts for 20 minute presentations (see below for details). ******************************************************************* The conference aims to gather together postgraduate researchers in Live Electronic Music and allied disciplines to explore discursively issues and challenges around practice-led research in this area. Given the breadth and diffuseness of activities involved in making and researching Live Electronic Music: How do we communicate about our practices to each other, either musically or verbally? Are we sure ourselves of what they are? Does this affect our ability to collaborate? How do we establish robust research methods than can account adequately for what we do and experience? We invite proposals for 20 minute presentations, to be submitted by 30th August 2009. Please see for details on submission, conference themes and sessions.
