From derek at umatic.nl Thu Jan 1 09:17:32 2009 From: derek at umatic.nl (Derek Holzer) Date: Thu, 01 Jan 2009 15:17:32 +0100 Subject: [microsound-announce] Berlin workshop: Tonewheels--drawn sound and light music with Derek Holzer Message-ID: <495CD07C.9000001@umatic.nl> January 10th 2009 2PM+: Tonewheels--drawn sound and light music with Derek Holzer TONEWHEELS is an experiment in converting graphical imagery to sound, inspired by some of the pioneering 20th Century electronic music inventions. Transparent tonewheels with repeating patterns are spun over light-sensitive electronic circuitry to produce sound and light pulsations and textures. This all-analog set is performed entirely live without the use of computers, using only overhead projectors as light source, performance interface and audience display. In this way, TONEWHEELS aims to open up the "black box" of electronic music and video by exposing the working processes of the performance for the audience to see. In this workshop, participants will learn about different optoelectronic components (photodiodes, photoresistors, phototransistors and photoelectric cells) and how they can be used to create sound from natural or electronic light sources in our everyday world, as well as from lasers and other modulated light sources. Circuits to drive motors in order to create hand-drawn spinning "tonewheels" will also be shown. For more information, see: http://www.umatic.nl/tonewheels.html Limited places! Please register at: m at 1010.co.uk About the instructor: Derek Holzer [USA 1972] is a sound artist who has performed live audiovisual sets using laptops and the Pure Data programming language since 2001. Becoming frustrated with the performance limitations of the computer, he began new experiments with all-analog, light-driven systems in the summer of 2007 which led to the TONEWHEELS live performance. Since then, TONEWHEELS has been performed in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, Estonia, Poland and Belgium. Workshop fee: 12 euros. ---_______ Background: Workshops led by field-expert practitioners extend over realms of code and embedded code, environmental code, noise, transmission and reception, and electromysticism. This work unfolds and reveals Lawrence's delicate sense of textural depth while exploring densities and flows (in his own words, "only offering the occasionally moment to surface for air. Much of this LPs sound textures emanate from distant calls of guitar, sharply cracked electronics, alien field recordings and a variety of other less identifiable sources." The cover art by renowned Australian photographer Marian Drew, from her 'Still Lives' series. It's Up To Us To Live is a distorted sonic distress beacon. It suggests a possible mapping of the increasingly cluttered sound spaces that find themselves associated with human habitation and expansion. http://www.sirr-ecords.com ................................................................ Participation is free, and selected participants will receive (at least) one meal a day plus Transmediale/Club Transmediale festival passes. All travel and accommodation is the responsibility of the selected participants. To apply, send a statement of interest and links to previous works to: xxxxx at clubtransmediale.de by 14 January 2008. The selections will be made on a running basis, so earlier is indeed better! Those not selected will still be able to drop in at the lab space along with the general public. about: xxxxx_temporary_structure CTM 2009 Tracing a clear line of development from both xxxxx_workshops: tolerance during CTM 2008 examining the material basis of technology and a series of life coding events in Norway and Germany, xxxxx hosts an experimental nine day structure widening the scope of construction and constructivism to embrace the social and economic structures of production and performance. Public interface is to be made explicit, inviting participation, visit and conversation. xxxxx temporary structure presents the expansion of both known and less familiar constructive procedures and apparatus, for example software (Pure Data, Python) and hardware (waves, circuits, simulation) into novel territory. Software becomes script and social pragmatics, hardware expands into optics, architecture, graffiti, elaborate kinetics and novel interfaces to the world addressing biologic and physical processes; a play of light, resonance and transmission. The relationship between structure and system is playfully opened, with the modelling of systems as core activity within the temporary lab space; simulation within both code and analogue electronics, the embedding of an internal observer allowing for a play with agents and agency. A concern with materiality and construction forms the base for an energetic examination of all manner of diagrams, public interface (reading space, discussion), bio-computing (plant life, EEG), world interface (practical endophysics), everyday technologies (light, food), code, transitions and translations. Such disciplines branch out mushroom like, revealing instabilities and new structures across nine days, in one space, publicly accessible throughout. xxxxx temporary structure is inherently experimental and interdisciplinary, inviting practitioners and artists who are well able to prise open the gaps between reified disciplines to actively create new social and constructive apparatus within the xxxxx space. A playful laboratory is proposed which does not mark boundaries between forms and between disciplines - which rather exposes and opens up social and artistic structures for sublime experience. *** Core invited participants and what they may or may not be doing on which days [more participants TBC after open call]: 1] Oswald Berthold [AT/DE] - 22-31 January Berthold (web.fm) describes himself as a semi-autonomous social particle commissioned in graz in 1976. His interests lie in media, programming, and networks. He is associated with xdv, farmersmanual, and gullibloon. Keywords: software-defined radio, sniffing, wide spectrum measurement of EM intensities, practical investigations of a brain equation, societal mapping 2] Alexei Blinov [UK/RU] - TBA Alexei Blinov is a Russian born artist/engineer living and working in London. He was and is strongly involved with wireless community networking. His areas of expertise include sensors, lasers, hardware design and programming. Keywords: free networks, antenna, open hardware, lasers, optical engineering 3] Leif Elggren - 22-27 January King of Elgaland-Vargaland Leif Elggren hides and plays in baroque manner beyond any possible, necessarily quotidian description of a conceptual, performance or audiovisual artist. Keywords: mis-use of esoteric recording devices (teeth), construction of crowns, physiological frequencies (body) 4] Derek Holzer [US/DE] - 22-31 January Derek Holzer's work focuses on capturing and transforming small, unnoticed sounds from various natural and urban locations, networked collaboration strategies, experiments in improvisational sound, self-made electronics and on the use of free software such as Pure-Data. Keywords: drawn sound, optoelectronic synthesis, systems for collaboration, more open than source, life outside the box 5] Martin Howse [UK/DE] - 22-31 January Martin Howse operates within the fields of discourse, speculative hardware (environmental data in open physical systems), code (an examination of layers of abstraction), free software and the situational (performances and interventions). Keywords: resonance, relativity and wave-length in space and architecture for varying wave phenomena, measurement and mapping of electromagnetic(EM) field strength intensities as archaeological conceit 6] Yunchul Kim - TBA Yunchul Kimborn studied music composition in Seoul and media art in KHM cologne, germany. His work has been shown in Ars Electronica, Transmediale, NewYork digital salon and Medialab Madrid amongst many others. He has been living and working in Germany since 1999 and is a guest lecturer at the Merz Academy, Institute for New Media, Stuttgart. Keywords: chaos elaboration, interface exploration, physical code trafficking, pataphysics, imaginary pathologies 7] Martin Kuentz - 22-31 January Martin Kuentz (Unkuentz), born 1975 in South West Germany, is a Berlin based freelance artist. Keywords: expansive kinetic constructivism, crashed kitchen sink and bath-tub chemistry, homemade fireworks, long-term transmissions 8] Rob Mullender - 26-31 January Rob Mullender is an artist and maker living and working in London, U.K. His current preoccupations mostly concern the possible inter-relationship between sound and light; in other words using one to help find out things about the other. This has proved to be an unexpectedly complicated and fertile subject, especially when seen as an artistic rather than a scientific or engineering pursuit. Keywords: auditory cameras, photophonics, ultrasonics, Enigma machines, sonification-as-synthesis 9] Julian Oliver [NZ/ES] - 24-29 January Julian Oliver has given numerous workshops and master classes in game-design, artistic game-development, object-oriented programming for artists, UNIX/Linux, virtual architecture, interface design, augmented reality and open source development practices worldwide. In 1998 he established the artistic game-development collective, Select Parks. Keywords: environmental steganography, Python code expansion, data forensics and augmented reality softwares 10] Otto Roessler - TBA Otto Roessler reveals the power and cruelty of the rationalist project as first invoked within a dream of Rene Descartes. Through elaboration of endophysics, a science of interiority, the world as interface is implemented within potential practical, scientific and artistic experiment. Keywords: practical endophysics, discussion of mute sperm whale communication, impending technocratic disaster analysis 11] Danja Vassiliev [RU/NL] - 22-31 January >From the middle of 90s, Danja Vassiliev has been actively engaged with internet, computer and digital based visual and installation art. His most recent research and works are concentrated around topics of digital networking, internet and stereotypes of the digital age. Keywords: literal UNIX pipes, shared communications systems, terminal VJ, swarmed networks with traffic/person as information carrier 12] Valentina Vuksic - 26-31 January Valentina Vuksic explores a highly individual articulation of hard and software mediation; the processes in such intermediate space as action thus implying actors rendered audible through novel intrusion. Keywords: exploration of computational process as actor/staged on physical substrate (audio) rendering, comparison of crash spectra 13] Dorotha Walentynowicz [PL/NL] - 25-31 January Dorotha Walentynowicz is an artist and performer who works with photography, video and sound, as well as modified game engines and other interactive media. Sunrise was recorded on the floor of my bedroom studio from September - November of 1996. Looking back at this release, and listening to it again, I realized how one of the tracks was just out of place, so just like Lucas would have done, I took the opportunity to replace the track with one that was better suited from the same time period. The new track replaces the old one at the second to last place in the original track lineup. In addition I have included 1 additional track from the same time period. I would have included it initially, but I was limited to 60 minute cassettes and the songs simply didn't fit, thus making this the definitive "Sunrise" release. This release used hardware for all of the sounds. The partial gear list is: Korg Monopoly, Roland Juno 106, Roland S-550, Roland R-70, Roland TR 909, Korg Pandora, Oberheim Matrix 1000, Oberheim OB-1, Yamaha SY-22, Yamaha TX81Z, Alesis Midiverb and a few other pieces of gear. All of the songs were done in the "performance to DAT" methodology, in which I would get all of my parts together and do a live performance of the song and capture it on DAT for the final version. So, in a simple sense all of these are "live takes" in the studio. The object of this release was to capture the feeling of a sunrise in sound - that magical moment when the sun shows itself for the first time in a day, and I am really happy with the result. I have put this on my iPod and it seems to work wonders for a subway ride, or for some other activity that you can simply "be in the moment" for. My requests might not be a big deal for some, but they're a big deal for me. For those who might be interested, here's what I just sent to Beatport re: the about Beatport>contact>ask a question form: Hi. Really enjoying seeing what some of the new features of Beatport will be with the relaunch on January 21. I have 2 requests that I'm hoping will be part of the relaunch: #1: currently I have to rename any files downloaded from Beatport because they start with a long number instead of artist name, song title, label, or some information that I would find more useful. Other download sites that I use do not have this issue (ie I do not need to rename tracks downloaded from elsewhere), so hopefully this can be fixed. #2: I'd really like the options to a) download artwork related to a purchased release and b) have all files from a release put in a named folder and c) have these folders be available as zips for faster downloading. Again, these 3 things are available from some download sites I use and I find them very helpful and much appreciated. Again, very much looking forward to the already-announced updates to Beatport for January 21, but hoping that the above, especially the removal of the long number at the start of downloaded files so I will not have to rename them, will be addressed as well. Matthew creates much of his sound from field recordings, often obtained during pretty extravagent recording rituals. I argue that the logic that leads him to doing so, in fact is a logic of magic.* In the third and final part we then reveal the true 'voise of noise' by partly erasing it, in 'denoising noise music' with Richard Eigner.[ permalink: http://www.harsmedia.com/SoundBlog/Archief/00659.php ]--Have a great day ...!__ Harold Schellinx===================================== * Be an Angel !__ Guard the SoundBlog !__==== http://angelsponsor.soundblog.net === _________________________________________________________________ T?l?phonez gratuitement ? tous vos proches avec Windows Live Messenger? !? The three night Festival of audio art will feature classic as well as recent and new fixed media compositions by 30 local and international composers. The expansive venue is uniquely suited to shaping the sound which will be diffused live over a pristine surround system consisting of 20+ speakers. Seated in the dark, it's a unique opportunity to experience music forming, literally, around you. This year marks both 50- and 60-year anniversaries, being 50 years since many now-classic "tape music" pieces had their world premieres, and being 60 years since Pierre Schaeffer presented "Concert de Bruits," the first concert of musique concr?te. So over the three nights of the Festival, works from these periods by Luciano Berio, Gy?rgy Ligeti, Pierre Schaeffer, Edgard Var?se, Iannis Xenakis, as well as more recent pieces by Paul Lansky, Paul McCartney, and others will be presented. And in honor of Olivier Messiaen's 100th birth year his sole tape piece "Timbres-Dur?es" (1952) will be presented. As in past annual SF Tape Music Festivals, this year will also feature new works by several local composers, including Ashley Bellouin, Kyle Bruckmann, George Cremaschi, Janis Mercer, Maggi Payne, Moe! Staiano, Jon Leidecker/Wobbly, Aaron Ximm, and premieres by SFTMC's own Thom Blum, Cliff Caruthers, Matt Ingalls, and Kent Jolly. The annual SF Tape Music Festival -- it's cinema for your ears! Over the course of the Festival the San Francisco Tape Music Collective will present two sound diffusion workshops, thanks to a grant from Meet the Composer. Members will talk about and demonstrate the art of of diffusion, and discuss approaches and solutions to composing music to be spatialized. Attendees will have the opportunity to try out the diffusion mixing board with assistance from the members. All participating composers will talk about and take questions regarding the Festival, tape music composition, and their works being presented in the Festival. Check the Web site http://www.sfsound.org/tape for the workshop schedules and more details. The areas recorded include: the ?Dry Valleys? (77?30?S 163?00?E) on the shore of McMurdo Sound, 3,500 km due south of New Zealand, the driest and largest relatively ice-free area on the continent completely devoid of terrestrial vegetation. Another is the geographic South Pole (90?00?S), the center of a featureless flat white expance, on top of ice nearly nine miles thick. http://www.gruenrekorder.de/?page_id=342 The ?Sonic Antarctica? Project is a radio broadcast, live performance as well as a sound and visual installation. It features recordings of the Antarctic soundscape made during Andrea Polli?s seven-week National Science Foundation residency in Antarctica during the 2007/2008 season. Polli recently spent seven weeks in Antarctica on a National Science Foundation funded project www.90degreessouth.org. The investigation of storms as wel as of the heat and the heartbeat of New York has been among her earlier projects. For this and related work, she has been recognized by the UNESCO Digital Arts Award 2003. The Antarctic is unlike any other place on earth: geographically, politically and culturally. Larger than the US, it is a frontier where borders and nationalities take a back seat to scientific collaboration and cooperation, a place where the compass becomes meaningless, yet, navigation is a matter of life and death. It is an extreme environment that holds some of the most unique species. But it is also an ecosystem undergoing rapid change. 2007/2008 marks the fourth International Polar Year (IPY), the largest and most ambitious international effort to investigate the impact of the poles on the global environment. New CD by EVAPORI out now! Best wishes, 1000f?ssler / Gregory http://www.1000fussler.com NEW RELEASE !!!! EVAPORI Rehearsals for Objects CD, (33:20 min), 300 copies in special foldout cardboard cover ? 2008 / 1000f?ssler 011, release date: 14. Jan. 2009 The aim while composing was to create a sound landscape that is exclusively made up of recordings which are not processed by computer effects (so-called plug-ins). The sounds are influenced by the way they are recorded, e.g. by the positions of the microphone and the sound source in a room. The resulting sonic situations are the basis of the the composition. The sounds ? most of them of an everyday nature ? were transformed using computer editing only, in order to leave the recognizability of the sounds untouched, create tension and to arouse the listener?s curiosity through different atmospheric cadences. Recordings were made at Rauchhaus / Berlin, Fundbureau and Christianskirche / Hamburg Mastering by Guy Saldanha Artwork by Nicolas Wiese Thanks to Celia Herrero and Christoph Lohse Tracklist: Rehearsal I 18:23 Interlude 3:12 Rehearsal II 11:34 About the Artist: Oliver Peters (*1970) lives and works in Berlin. Since the early 90s he has worked with electronic music and since 2002 has performed as EVAPORI with releases on AIC, Walter Ulbricht Schallfolien, 1000f?ssler. His compositions are mostly based on concrete sound sources: field recordings, transformation of found footage and the use of self-made sound objects or classical instruments such as piano or cello. Together with Nicolas Wiese [-HYPH-] Peters founded the Label AIC. Since 2006 he has, amongst other projects, set music to the scientific film ?E2250? which was shown at short film festivals in Hamburg and in Darmstadt in the category ?Modern Music in the Context of Technology?. In 2008 he contributed a composition to Satoshi Morita?s ?sound helmet?. Various concerts and festivals: e.g. Odradek/Entracte 2008 (Gent), blurred edges 2006 (Hamburg), Ausklangfestival H?rbar (Hamburg). http://virb.com/evapori --------------------------------------- > the 1000f?ssler says thanks for your advertency. http://www.1000fussler.com http://www.myspace.com/1000fussler.com - (If you don`t want to receive any news from us than send us a mail.) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Through his ground-breaking Disinformation project (active since 1995), noise DJ and installation artist Joe Banks pioneered the use of electromagnetic (radio) noise from sources such as live mains electricity, lightning, industrial and IT hardware, laboratory equipment, trains, magnetic storms and the sun as the raw material of musical and fine-art publications, exhibits and events. Disinformation has been the subject of ten UK solo exhibitions, experienced by over 100,000 people and described by The Guardian as some of the most beautiful installations around. http://www.flickr.com/photos/disinfo/ http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=B13-09K-Ubc ROBERT ATWOOD Robert Atwood has been experimenting with improvised performances on improvised instruments for several years, first as part of Toronto's "Urban Refuse Group" and subsequently as a solo project in London, UK. He also has explored improvisational music with traditional instruments and effect-processed instruments with Toronto's "Brain Harmonic", and has used and developed sound feedback and sequencing software for performances with London's "Openlab" collective, and live-coding feedback patches for Loss-Livecode. His broad theme of sound performances is the improvisational reaction to generated feedback, in electronic circuits or in software synthesis. In this performance he will use Feedback Machine #1, consisting of a discarded 8-inch woofer cone with a homebuilt amplifier rig and some pedal-effects. The feedback loop is completed by the performer's hands which conduct sound directly from the speaker cone to a pickup microphone. The result of this feedback is further process ed by a specially-developed sequencer program, which samples segments of the sound, sequences them into a loop, and also feeds the output of the loop back into the individual samples. Thus there are two feedback loops on different time scales which the performer will attempt to control, with only partial success, resulting in an unpredictable polyrhythmic performance. http://robert.lurk.org/ MICK GRIERSON Mick Grierson is an experimental artist specialising in real-time interactive audiovisual research, with specific focus on cognition and perception. He works in film, music, and software development, both inside and outside industry, designing, developing and producing new approaches to creating audiovisual experience. In addition to working in traditional roles in film and television, he has designed commercial audiovisual software for the entertainment industries, which has led to several high profile commissions, including title design and digital audiovisual installations for the hit TV show Derren Brown: Trick of the Mind. In January 2008, he collaborated with the Sonic Arts Network to create a freely available interactive audiovisual interface for use by the deaf and hard of hearing. In addition he is lead developer on the Mabuse Audiovisual Composition Software Environment. He is currently working on a three year fully funded AHRC project on audiovisual cognition at Goldsmiths Electronic Music Studios. http://www.mickgrierson.co.uk/ SLUB slub is a live coding band with Dave Griffiths, Alex McLean and, occasionally, Adrian Ward. Grifiths writes programs to make noises, pictures and animations. He lives in London where he makes film effects software and computer games. McLean has been triggering distorted kick drum samples with Perl scripts for far too long. He is a PhD student of Arts and Computational Technology at Goldsmiths College. Griffiths and McLean are both members of the Openlab free software artists collective and the TOPLAP organisation for live algorithm promotion. http://slub.org/ JOHN BOWERS & LIAM WELLS Bowers and Wells will simultaneously perform GforGuitar (Wells) and GforGround (Bowers). The performances will be accompanied by computer generated sounds and images derived from multiple cross-modal feedback processes. All material will be tuned in relation to harmonics and sub-harmonics of the AC supply frequency 50 Hz, our fundamental, G. John Bowers works with home brew electronics, self-made instruments and reconstructions of antique image and sound-making devices, alongside contemporary digital technology. He is concerned with making performance environments that combine sound, vision and human gesture at a fundamental physical level. Recent work includes projects to build a music synthesizer using 19th century techniques (The Victorian Synthesizer), explorations of random circuitry (Ohm-My-God), a miniaturisation of Brion Gysin and Ian Sommerville's Dreamachine (My Little Dreamachine), and a reconstruction of early television technology (This Nightlife Instrument). He was recently artist in residence at Fylkingen in Stockholm. He is co-founder of the Onoma Research label and also plays electric guitar in the fundamentalist noise rock band Tonesucker. John Bowers is part of the Interaction Research Studio, Department of Design, Goldsmiths, University of London. http://www.onoma.co.uk/jmbowers.html Liam Wells is a UK based artist working in a number of improvised practices, which explore repetition & irregularity in multiple layered non-linear audio/ visual works. Through a number of linked practices including drone-based noise compositions/ improvisations, installation, video-performances and networked/ net art, he explores textural detail and difference within immersive environments. He is a postgraduate student at theUEA's Electronic Music Studio and is currently Course Leader of Norwich University College of the Arts' (BA Hons) Film and Video. Previously he has been involved in the creation of networked improvisational environments through involvement with a variety of organisations, including the co-curating of various multi-site works with n0media (www.n0media.net) and has recently performed audiovisual works at DIT (Ireland), Fylkingen (Sweden), Norwich Gallery (UK) and City Gallery (Lithuania). Reche is well known because his performances around the world and releases on labels as fukkgod, con-v, the locus of or testing ground. 'Conexi?n' show us a less dark Reche but stronger and energetic as never before; his pictures of the city are still there but this time from the perspective of the machine; his classical extreme use of noise is now more controlled maybe less emotional, more rational. maybe his strongest work to date and a new step on his excellent discography. http://www.con-v.org From convnetlabel at yahoo.com Mon Jan 19 06:23:59 2009 From: convnetlabel at yahoo.com (conv) Date: Mon, 19 Jan 2009 03:23:59 -0800 (PST) Subject: [microsound-announce] John Hudak - sotto voce (reissue) | third and final edition on con-v Message-ID: <639150.31725.qm@web56404.mail.re3.yahoo.com> Third and final edition (limited to 60 numbered copies) of 2005 album 'sotto voce' by NYC microsound master John Hudak. Poised somewhere between mechanical music & chamber pieces (for pizzicato cello), these tracks herald the return of the avantgarde to her original locality: the salon, this heart of 'bourgeois' society. The non-communicative qualities of the modernistic literary avantgarde (of which James Joyce & Gertrude Stein in particular may be considered iconographic), we find here in the sublimated form of tranquil and austere monophonies, the unique character of which - each voice, each work, each individual genius - now comes to reside purely in the abstracted prosody of midi-triggered cello samples. This is altogether an undeniably 'post-modern' take on modernism: the unrelentless and self-consuming presence of the original art of which these pieces are derived (the pieces are taken from the voices of Gertrude Stein and James Joyce reading from their works) has now taken a much more diluted and yet more immanent form: a music which having soaked up all the heavy-weighing ambiance of artistic ideals & pretension and, having become satiated, now softly leaks out into the salon as conversation pieces, bringing human life in all its 'ordinariness' (the inverted comma's, being the trade-mark of postmodernity, signifying its own special character) back into the room, and perhaps breathing new life into the idea of the salon. http://www.con-v.org From andrew at andrew-duke.com Mon Jan 19 09:14:55 2009 From: andrew at andrew-duke.com (Andrew Duke) Date: Mon, 19 Jan 2009 10:14:55 -0400 Subject: [microsound-announce] apologies Message-ID: <49748ADF.6000408@andrew-duke.com> Apologies for the email I posted last night re: frustration. Michael Raco-Rands, Tom Recchion, Silas Ritchie, Marco Schindelmann, and Kevin Schlei. On Saturday, March 1st, 2008, a few hours before the Midwest Phonographers Union planned to perform in the UWM Fine Arts Cinema, a JBL EON15 G2 loudspeaker began malfunctioning, emitting a low rumble of unknown origin. The fluctuating drone grew louder and sharper, punctuated by brief pops and glitches. Chris Delaurenti and John Kannenberg recorded the phenomena, and Glenn Bach decided to take advantage of the the chain of events and created a larger project under the umbrella of his improvising ensemble, Double Blind. Inspired in part by Chris Schlarb's communal project, "Twilight and Ghost Stories" (as well as Yasunao Tone's "Solo for Wounded CD" and William Basinski's "Disintegration Loops"), Bach imagined a collaborative remix of Kannenberg's field recordings, a collective interpretation of malfunction and failure. Participants remixed, resampled, cut up, and reinterpreted the sound of the broken speaker (along with several second-generation responses), or contributed entirely new compositions inspired by a similar sense of malfunctioning gear or general sense of collapse. Bach then wove the contributions into an overall soundscape marked by four distinct movements, each a distinct collage of sound, noise, and music. MPRNTBL is a net label dedicated to quiet music, lowercase, free improvisation, field recordings, analog noise, and collaborative soundscapes. Forthcoming releases from Intense Situations of Peril, mem1, and smgsap. +++++ Thanks, G. -- http://www.glennbach.com http://www.mprntbl.com From hidari at gmx.net Fri Jan 23 08:09:56 2009 From: hidari at gmx.net (tomoroh hidari) Date: Fri, 23 Jan 2009 14:09:56 +0100 Subject: [microsound-announce] liveset In-Reply-To: <4D926965-04D2-4A55-AA89-7B27E05340BB@sonicartsnetwork.org> Message-ID: <51C3BAA332C74403AFDD6A21272A6EDC@pathetic1> Here?s a lil fringe-core, idm, goth liveset which, I hope, still might appeal to some microsounders out there http://soundcloud.com/tomoroh-hidari/tomoroh-hidari-live-at-arena-wien-1 2jan09 oh, and there is also a ?what?s his book? fanpage for the old morgenlinks: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tomoroh-Hidari/45084886499?ref=nf enjoy, ?. ?~? With a healthy nod to the seminal Canadian composer and pianist Glenn Gould, I want to use the mediums of radio and audio file download to create the opportunity for multi layered indeterminate listening based on what it is to live in the south. I am requesting 2 minute audio snapshots of locations in the southern Hemisphere which will be compiled and edited into a larger body of work for radio. I also ask for your locations latitude, and longitude co-ordinates, which will form the contour of an indeterminate tonal composition. The work will be exhibited as part of a sound installation at Loop Gallery, Newcastle, Australia in March 2009 and the final radio program will be aired in July .The recording and accompanying downloads will also be released as a hard copy album later in the year. If you live in the southern hemisphere and would like to participate, please record a segment (no longer than 2 minutes) of a location of your choice, detailing the latitude and longitude of the location. Please also include any other information such as day, time, season, emotional relation to location and contact details. All contributors will be credited and by submitting recordings i assume your permission to use the material in the manner outlined, under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0. Please upload stereo wavs or high quality (320k) mps to roger AT eartrumpet [dot] org via ftp http://www.yousendit.com. For those with access to a server I am happy to download from them. "FLOSS+Art" is the first book to answer this question. It shows how the value of Free Software lies in its differences and creative challenges, as opposed to out-of-the-box and off-the-shelf solutions; how it allows to work and collaborate differently with computers, and therefore enable different kinds of art and design. The Internet - whose infrastructure is based on free software and open standards - is an obvious example of such an adaptable, collaborative artistic medium. "FLOSS+Art" also covers more traditional artistic domains such as graphic and audiovisual design, and how they shift from customer-centric to community-driven work. FLOSS+Art critically reflects on the growing relationship between Free Software philosophy, open content and digital art. It provides first-hand insight into its social, political and economic myths and realities. His ground of work is field recordings he made during intense traveling through various countries and places like forests, abandoned countryside etc. What is peculiar in his musical approach, it's special meaning of human environment, namely - estrangement from the traditional forms of musical aesthetics through aural perception and spatial orientation. His albums were released by many labels specializing in electroacoustic and experimental electronics: Staalplaat, Erewhon, Intransitive Recordings, Cloud of Statics, SIRRecords etc. "Intimations" released by Richard Francis' label CMR in New Zealand. The church acoustics and the powerful output of the pipe organ are real world tools not accessible to the common artist due to obvious impracticalities. Hence the necessity to adapt and update. The source material was gathered from old public domain vinyl records available in the www.europarchive.org and from actual field recordings of the great pipe organ of "Igreja Senhora da Concei??o" in Porto, Portugal. Ultimately, this material was shaped into an imaginary reality, emphasized by the artificial nature of the digital medium. This work is available through a donation of any size. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <497F672E.9000204@musclefish.com> Hi all, Just a reminder that the SF Tape Music Festival will be happening this weekend. Here's the info, in case you missed the post a couple weeks ago. Come one, come all! ..Thom Blum ========================== 2009 San Francisco Tape Music Festival January 30, 31 and February 1, 2009 8 PM CELLspace 2050 Bryant Street (btwn 18th & 19th Streets) San Francisco, CA $12 [$7 underemployed] each night $24 for festival pass Advanced tickets -- http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/52645 Web site -- http://sfsound.org/tape E-mail -- tapefest at sfsound.org The 2009 San Francisco Tape Music Festival, curated by sfSound's SF Tape Music Collective, will take place this January 30th, 31st, and February 1st at CELLspace. My guests are all holding very important positions, despite their young age. Therefore, my biggest interest lies of course in their future and I believe that listening to what they are interested in, might be strongly connected to the future of the art and technology scene. Also I am expecting to hear some off-topics about their activities, private backgrounds as well as a look behind their serious side. The talk will be presentation based but I would like it to be an informal and very relaxed discussion round. He started his artistic activities in 2000. He pursues aesthetics and consequences of computer music and tries out boundaries of contemporary media and technologies. http://isddsk.com/ What is The Subtopic? The Subtopic is a series of talk sessions with artists, researchers, curators, activists, journalists and similar - moderated by Daisuke Ishida. The Aim I think it is nice to talk about anything with anybody. Especially talking to somebody who is very much into a topic, particularly people who are dealing with art and technology with advanced thoughts based on their own experience, unique theory, historical relation or their in depth research. I believe the stories of the participants of the Subtopic-talks will be very interesting. I would like to understand their contexts, processes, origins, aims and ideas in detail through discussion. It is important to me to not only focus on their work, but as well to get to know their personality. Why is it called The Subtopic? The best way to understand my guests is not only to talk about their work but just to see what they are doing! Possibly the essence of their activities is beyond understanding or not explainable through language. Therefore talking (subtopic) about their works (maintopic) should be seen only as an addition to the process of understanding them. I am trying to simply get some clues directly from them to gain further insight into their work. http://subtopic.isddsk.com/ Daisuke Ishida Daisuke Ishida daisuke-ishida at jp.org http://isddsk.com/ http://www.myspace.com/isddsk -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web.com ? Based around field recordings made on the rainy streets of a night time metropolis - we find memories from magnetic tape & digital disc resurfacing to drift amongst re workings of multiple versions of Cole Porter's standard 'I Love Paris'. Here, distant jazz piano dissolves into steaming kitchen doorways emerging from labyrinthine side streets in an evocation of a personal recollection.
