Periskop is about submarines, intrusive technology and dubbed out sound experimentation, but also about alienation and boredom as constructive states of well-being in a posthuman environment. This site consists of several modules - each giving access to various works or information about different aspects of the project. Read below. Call for Submissions: Sommeil: A Concert for Sleep In early April I will be reinterpreting the sleep concert experiment, first created by Robert Rich ( http://robertrich.com/ ) in 1982, at a well established gallery in New Orleans, Louisiana. I am doing so with Rich's permission and guidance. Sleep concerts as presented by Rich are all night events in which the audience is asked to attend the concert with a sleeping bag and pillow and to fall asleep while a slowly unfolding sonic texture evolves over the course of the night and into the morning. This concert will begin at 10 pm and end at 7 am with tea and breakfast. Not merely a recreation of Rich's original idea, Sommeil will be a global reinterpretation of a performance type that addresses one of the most basic functionalities of ambient sound, music by which to sleep. One might call this sort of cultural reshuffling a conceptual remix. In the spirit of remix and the Creative Commons movement, I am looking for submissions of audio material for the concert. This is an opportunity for artists from all parts of the globe to help shape the next generation of sleep concerts. Experimedia Records has generously agreed to release material submitted on its net label under a Creative Commons license. I am interested in the following: field recordings of natural and man-made phenomena, unprocessed recordings of musical instruments, drones, room ambience, strangely tuned string recordings and any other sonic matter that will somehow enhance a glacially ambient landscape of sleep music. All submissions should in some way be appropriate for an audience that will be sleeping. The concert will be 9 hours of uninterrupted music. All audio submissions may be highly altered through various processors, looped, rearranged algorithmically and otherwise manipulated through digital means. Basically, I want to create a giant sleepy ambient mash up in honor of one of the fathers of ambient music. It is also my hope that this concert introduces the people of New Orleans to the incredibly creative music of ambient and experimental artists that are flourishing all over the world, often unbeknownst to the general populace. Release of the material will either be in a compilation of short remixes or in large scale remixes from multiple audio sources. Your material will be credited both at the concert in program notes and on the release that Experimedia ( http://www.experimedia.net/ ) has graciously agreed to publish. All releases will in some way reflect how your sonic matter was presented at the live sleep concert. I plan to blog extensively about this multifaceted performance/collaboration. Please contact me personally at barely.audible at gmail.com or by searching for Tanner Menard on facebook. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. I would love to get to know everyone who contributes material and would love to blog about the audio matter that you submit, previous or future releases of your music and anything else that might help in promoting your art. The deadline for submissions is March 12th 2009. Special thanks to Robert Rich ( http://robertrich.com ), Jeremy Bible ( http://jeremybible.com ), Experimedia ( http://www.experimedia.net ), Shawn Hall and Antenna ( http://www.antennagallery.org ) Gallery To learn more about Robert Rich's original sleep concert experiments please visit http://www.downloadplatform.com/album.php?album=164&Robert+Rich+Somnium "The first hour or two will be slightly more active than the rest, but soon the music will drop away into slow foggy textures and strange ambient sounds. At low volumes, these textures can blend into your acoustic environment, creating a sort of sonic dislocation, a re-focusing of your perceptions. You can use the sound texture as a way to focus your attention onto images that arise out of your half-sleeping mind. In the transitions between sleep and wake, hypnogogic images may become intensified and more vivid. You may also become more aware of dreams, and you can observe the different layers of perception as you teeter on the edge of consciousness"?Robert Rich contact : Tanner Menard - barely.audible at gmail.com -- -- Jeremy Bible --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Experimedia - record label + mailorder shop + a/v arts (est.2000) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- experimedia.net jeremybible.com jbjh.experimedia.net myspace.com/experimedia --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From expe at madicoinc.com Wed Feb 4 08:56:37 2009 From: expe at madicoinc.com (Max & Mark) Date: Wed, 04 Feb 2009 08:56:37 -0500 Subject: [microsound-announce] (dj-mix) pertin-nce show vol.04 - v/a - selected by bleupulp Message-ID: <3E54BB833D3B4353AD16693F33AC67F0@madico.com> Ola ola pertin-nce show vol. 04 - v/a - selected by bleupulp all records, about 45 minutes, downbeats, idm, chill out stuff and some house.. most of the tracks are not mixed, some slightly are... hope that you'll enjoy please download at http://www.pertin-nce.com/releases/pertin-nce_show_4.mp3 track listing : 1- nicolette - no gouvernment - k7 2- herbert - ill do it - k7 3- borough of kings - ??? Message-ID: <9ED3ED57-06C4-4F9D-B8E2-CD886AEF59B5@otownmedia.com> Films "One Year" and "drift" to be screened at L.A. International Festival of Cinema and Technology Richard Lainhart, award-winning composer, filmmaker, and author, is pleased to announce that two of his short films, "One Year" and "drift", have been accepted for screening at the International Festival of Cinema and Technology's Visions of Movement, Art and Sound, Saturday February 7th in Los Angeles. 'One Year' is a year-long timescape of a maple tree in Lainhart's backyard, photographed daily with a digital still camera under computer control and assembled and processed in Adobe After Effects. The soundtrack is computer-processed bowed vibraphone, played and recorded live. 'drift' is an abstact HD film created entirely in Adobe After Effects. The soundtrack is an improvisation for lapsteel guitar processed with the Symbolic Sound Kyma System. The International Fest of Cinema and Technology (IFCT) takes place at the Downtown Independent Theatre at 251 S. Main Street in downtown Los Angeles. This festival will be screening films from filmmakers around the world. The IFCT, (www.ifct.org) now in its 6th year, specializes in screening new animation and experimental film. The festival line-up also includes an array of exceptional narrative and documentary features and shorts. The IFCT is designed to give exposure to independent films, many of which previously had been underexposed to the public. The festival's motto is it seeks to "discover the undiscovered film." The "technology" in the festival's name occurs both in the content of the festival, which tends to focus on themes of technology or feature unique creation techniques, as well as in the method of showcasing content at the events. Richard Lainhart's "drift" and "One Year" will receive their L.A. premieres at the Festival's Visions of Movement, Art and Sound, Saturday February 7th. This showcase features cutting edge films with an intense focus on music and equally dynamic visuals. Along with Lainhart, presentations include 10 new and innovative music videos including Katy Davis' "Stay in My Memory" video for Bimm, SHTIL Music Video for Infectzia, and Hillside Music Video directed by Nir Ben Jacob for the band Sidewalk Fiction, among others. Other films in this screening sequence focusing on strong sounds and mesmerizing visuals include "Himalyanwalk" directed by Jeanet Snijders, "Motion" directed by John Osborne. ? I was transported." Jerry Saltz, New York Magazine Marina Rosenfeld headlines the first day of this year's program of innovative and unconventional electroacoustic and cross-media work from CalArts' Center for Experiments in Art, Information and Technology (CEAIT). Rosenfeld's wide-ranging work includes live remixes of her own handmade acetate records ("dub plates"); the nail-polish bottle-on-electric guitar music of the Sheer Frost Orchestra; and last spring's performance and installation iterations of Teenage Lontano?a "cover" of Gy?rgy Ligeti's modernist landmark sung by a choir of teenagers?at the Whitney Biennial. She brings a new composition for "phonographic speaker," a rotating horn device whose arcs of electroacoustic sound, emitted at 33 1/3 rpm, emulate the graceful, leisurely tempo of an LP. Opening on Friday are Tom Recchion, a pioneer in low-tech sonic exploration; and K. Atchley's Turtles, a multi-channel, laptop concert work in which manipulation of the amplitude and spatial placement of sine wave tones effects harmonic and timbral changes. February 6th, 8:30 PM MARINA ROSENFELD Day 2: CEAIT FESTIVAL YASUNAO TONE REDCAT February 7th, 2009 http://www.redcat.org/season/0809/mus/ceaitfest.php "Tone truly utilizes one of the most distinctive and diverse palettes in electronic noise... Curious, beautifully strident music." Dusted Yasunao Tone headlines the second day of this year's program of innovative and unconventional electroacoustic and cross-media work from CalArts' Center for Experiments in Art, Information and Technology (CEAIT). The legendary Tone ranks among the first Japanese artists to "compose" happenings and improvisations in the 1960s. A veteran of Fluxus, Group Ongaku, Hi-Red Center and Team Random, he has created pieces for "wounded" CDs, computer systems, film, TV and radio, as well as environmental art. His work here entails a surround-sound automatic collage of source material from CDs and radio. Opening on Saturday are composer, improviser, and sound artist Clay Chaplin, mangling political speech in real time to create ambient tapestries of sound; and Laura Steenberge discovers that the dictionary is alive in her "Lecture on Words". February 7th, 8:30 PM YASUNAO TONE WHERE REDCAT (The Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater) is located at the corner of W. 2nd St. and S. Hope St., inside the Walt Disney Concert Hall complex. TICKETS Performance is scheduled for Friday, February 7th, 2009, at 8:30 p.m. Ticket prices range from $16-$20, with discounts available. Seating is general admission. March 13, 2009 Opening Reception Wednesday, February 11, 5:30 ? 7:30 pm Public talk with Linn Meyers & Richard Chartier Saturday, February 21, 2:00 pm The Art Gallery University of Maryland, College Park Linn Meyers is the first participant in the artist-in-residence program at The Art Gallery. The Art Gallery launched an artist-in- residence program as an opportunity for artists to create site- specific installations and to give artists a space in which to imagine new ways to work. The residency is followed by an exhibition of the realized project and, in this instance, documented through time- lapse video and accompanied by a color brochure. here today showcases two large-scale wall drawings by Linn Meyers. The wall drawings reflect a current trend occurring in her work in which the center of the image is filled with pulsating, curvilinear forms winding in a dramatic and moving pattern that reverberates out to the edges with fewer and more defined repeated lines. Visitors are immediately aware of transformation of the gallery space with the construction of a forty-four foot long concave wall covered by Meyers? drawing, the artist?s largest wall drawing to date. The exhibition also features a number of smaller drawings on mylar, and what Meyers refers to as ?preparatory drawings? created as part of the process leading up to the wall drawings. The back gallery space features a unique first collaborative project between Meyers and sound artist Richard Chartier, in an installation where optical and sonic patterns intersect. With another architectural transformation of the gallery space, two fifteen foot long by eight foot high walls meet in an enfolding chevron, creating both a sound chamber and a drawing surface. The swirling lines of Meyers' drawing, made directly on the surface of the walls, fuse together with the sound piece by Chartier, juxtaposing the organic and the digital into unified sensorial space. With eight audio transducers applied directly to the back surface of the walls, Chartier's stark composition modulates and transfers through the surfaces. Linn Meyers is an artist based in Washington D.C. Her art is featured in many collections throughout the country including: The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC; and the New Britain Museum of American Art, New Britain, CT. Her art has been featured in exhibitions at the Bus-dori Project Space and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art, in Tokyo, Japan; Gallery Joe in Philadelphia, PA; G Fine Art in Washington, DC; and Margaret Thatcher Projects in New York City. She received her BFA at The Cooper Union in New York and her MFA at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Richard Chartier is a sound/installation artist based in Washington D.C. His minimalist sound works and installations have been presented internationally in exhibitions at museums and galleries including: the ICC (Intercommunication Center) in Tokyo, Japan; Castello di Rivoli in Torino, Italy; Whitney Museum of American Art in New York; The Art Institute of Chicago; and G Fine Art in Washington, DC. He has performed his works live throughout the world at festivals, museums and art spaces in Europe, Japan, Australia, and North America. CATALOG. Featuring an interview with Linn Meyers by Jefferson Pinder, assistant professor in the Department of Art, and Lara Langer, Ph.D. student in the Department of Art History and Archaeology. See below... I would like to thank all that have sent me recordings but I would also like to renew the call again for recordings that are made particularly outside of the major Australian cities which I now have many. I am know looking for recordings from Australian interior, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, southern Africa, Indonesia, New Zealand, Antarctica. All artists will be credited in accompanying literature and on screen. -- Roger Mills http://www.eartrumpet.org http://www.furthernoise.org http://ethernetorchestra.netpraxis.net M: 0403 414495 -------------------- ORIGINAL CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS Hi everyone, I am working on a series of compositions for a radio project entitled Idea of South. With a healthy nod to the seminal Canadian composer and pianist Glenn Gould, I want to use the mediums of radio and audio file download to create the opportunity for multi layered indeterminate listening based on what it is to live in the south. I am requesting 2 minute audio snapshots of locations in the southern Hemisphere which will be compiled and edited into a larger body of work for radio. I also ask for your locations latitude, and longitude co-ordinates, which will form the contour of an indeterminate tonal composition. The work will be exhibited as part of a sound installation at Loop Gallery, Newcastle, Australia in February 2009 and the final radio program will be aired in July .The recording and accompanying downloads will also be released as a hard copy album later in the year. If you live in the southern hemisphere and would like to participate, please record a segment (no longer than 2 minutes) of a location of your choice, detailing the latitude and longitude of the location. Please also include any other information such as day, time, season, emotional relation to location and contact details. All contributors will be credited and by submitting recordings i assume your permission to use the material in the manner outlined, under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0. Found Feelin' ------------------------------ "Lovely Banalities" is the second release in Cr?nica from Lithuanian sound-artist Gintas K, after the much acclaimed double CD from 2006 "Lengvai / 60 x one minute audio colours of 2kHz sound". "Lovely Banalities" presents fourteen short pieces - a collection of miniatures, impressions, sketches, innuendos and errors - inspired on the exceptionality and suprisingness of the quotidian, on the extraordinary everydayness. Gintas K draws analogies between these pieces and Modest Mussorgsky's suite "Pictures at an Exhibition", mapping fourteen individual moments, ready to be visited by the listener. The pieces of synthesized digital music are contrasted with evocative field recordings, captured in Gintas K's hometown of Marijampolė, during a windy summer Sunday afternoon. These are sounds of lovely and quotidian moments, unremarkable sounds that are an evocation of forgotten and rediscovered feelings, of small and precious things from the past that still hover in the air, that remain in the streets, somewhere in the grass. The field recordings weave the pieces together, guiding this auditory visit. "Lovely Banalities" thrives by its apparent formal and structural simplicity, but this simplicity - as in everyday life - is an illusion. "Lovely Banalities" was composed by Gintas K. The lovely cover art was created by David Muth. It was designed and mastered by MCarvalhais. ------------------------------ http://www.cronicaelectronica.org/?p=040 The CD is now available directly from Cr?nica, through Boomkat or Zero Inch. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ live at : IN TOUCH FIRST ELECTRONIC MUSIC FESTIVAL MINSK-BELARUS, 02/28/2009, Club Fabrique, ul. Sampling and processing her voice in real-time, using lo-tech electronics and the chimerical properties of electrical feedback, she creates live performances that combine electro-acoustic maximalism and psychedelic story telling. With improvisation she explores the possibilities of error and failure, circumstances in which the spectator is refocused with present-minded awareness. The eclecticism of her work attracts international programmers from various disciplines from spoken word and sound art to live art and music. Alexis has been known to wear clothes that run on batteries. http://www.myspace.com/alexisohara INVISIBLE BEES Invisible bees are a primitive-psych-folk-duo 'united in their aim to send time out of joint'. Their sound is 'darkly hypnotic-droney-buzzy with primitive saz-warm accordion swell, minimal guitar motifs-strummed violin-tolling bells-bowed metal and devotional vocals'. The Bees' Damian Burgess and Norwegian Elin Eriksen are both London-based, but originally from Manchester and Oslo respectively, and list Black Sabbath, Harry Partch, Sonic Youth, Philip K Dick, The Melvins, Neil Young, Derek Bailey, Tarkovsky, Henry Flynt and Beefheart amongst their inspirations. http://www.myspace.com/invisiblebees NINE OWLS IN A BAGUETTE This surreal group's founder is artist Patrick Furness, primarily a sound designer, who has run workshops with the Sonic Arts Network (including their Sonic Postcard project) and Cineclub. Places are limited to 12. Participants should indicate ahead of time what their background and areas of interest are (sound, video, sensors, etc) as well as give a short description of any project they might want to develop during the workshop. Pure Data is a powerful, free and open-source software environment for producing and manipulating sound, image, data and connections to sensors, motors and other "physical computing" functions, all in real time. Because the programming is done visually, many artists find it a more intuitive tool than traditional text-oriented programming languages. This 5 day workshop will cover the basic "grammar" and "vocabulary" of the Pure Data language through a mix of lecture and demonstration in the mornings and project-based mentoring in the afternoons. This workshop is open to those with no previous computer programming experience, however basic computer literacy is assumed as well as a working familiarity with either digital audio or video. A manual-in-progress for Pure Data by Derek Holzer can be found here: http://flossmanuals.net/puredata 5 DAY CURRICULUM DAY ONE: 1) Meeting PD: the interface and how to play with it 2) Basic PD: participants learn to make a simple synthesizer, and learn basic PD grammar in the process 3) Workshop: discussions of examples and work on student projects DAY TWO: 1) PD audio: more on oscillators, noise, delays, feedback, filters and signal analysis for all your sonic needs 2) Events in PD: participants explore the timing of events with sequencers, delays, messages 3) Workshop: discussions of examples and work on student projects DAY THREE: 1) Working with soundfiles: loading audio for use in samplers, granulators and other file-based sound manipulation systems 2) Basic GEM: how to create simple 3D objects, play videos and get camera input 3) Workshop: discussions of examples and work on student projects DAY FOUR: 1) Physical PD: an introduction to physical computing using Pure Data alongside a microcontroller-based board such as the Arduino or xxxxxAVR/HID--or even a hacked USB gamepad--to work with sensors, motors, lights, etc. 2) Workshop: discussions of examples and work on student projects DAY FIVE: 1) Workshop: discussions of examples and work on student projects 2) The Wrap Up: public presentation of student works + closing party. WHAT PARTICIPANTS SHOULD BRING Essential: 1) Laptop running Linux, OS X or Windows 2) Pure Data Extended installed from: http://puredata.info/downloads (please make sure it is Extended package!) 3) Soundcard 4) Headphones Recommended/Suggested: 1) MIDI controller/keyboard 2) Microphone/piezoelectric contact microphone 3) USB Joystick/Gamepad 4) Sensors or other input devices (please bring your own sensors if you are interested in working with them, as only a few light sensors will be provided at the workshop) 5) Small motors or motor-driven objects 6) USB webcam/Firewire camera 7) Arduino boards (Available from Segor in Berlin: www.segor.de ) and/or the xxxxxAVR/HID board (http://www.1010.co.uk/avrhid.html , please inquire via the xxxxx webpage about preordering!) 8) Your own projects and ideas to realize! ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHY Derek Holzer [USA 1972] is a sound artist with a background in radio, webstreaming and environmental recording. His work focuses on capturing and transforming small, unnoticed sounds from various natural and urban locations, networked collaboration strategies, experiments in improvisational sound and the use of free software such as Pure-Data. He has released tracks under the Nexsound, Sirr, and/OAR, Frozen Elephants Music, Mandorla and Gruenrekorder labels, and has co-initiated several internet projects for field recording and collaborative soundscapes including Soundtransit.nl. His recent projects include the opto-electronic audiovisual performance TONEWHEELS, solo performances for analog synthesizer and a manual for Pure Data. He was also co-curator of the Tuned City event for sound and architecture, which took place in Berlin during July 2008. http://umatic.nl/info_derek.html http://www.myspace.com/macumbista -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Furthernoise issue February 2009 http://www.furthernoise.org/index.php?iss=77 "Seconds in Formaldehyde, Waterscape, Suchness" (feature) A movement of drone-gaze tone-haze guitar wranglers is on the rise. Somewhere at the centre is Seconds in Formaldehyde, placing notes, harmonics and chords in suspension. He's one of a loose affiliation of likeminds making ambient gold from base string metal, he's rolled out on his Waterscape label works by fellow-travellers as various as Peter Wright, Jason Sloan, and Hakobune. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=285 feature by Alan Lockett "ESP Organism - Brown Wing Overdrive" (review) Brown Wing Overdrives new album ESP Organism, released on John Zorn's Ztadik label is rightly catalogued under Lunatic Fringe, and if John himself thinks that, then you get some idea of what your in for. What runs through this forty six minute melange of electro-acoustic shamanistic glitch is a truly serious concern for the absurd. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=283 review by Roger Mills "Imperfect Silence - Various" (review) Imperfect Silence is a radical collaboration between artists working together purely online. Global boundaries and cultural differences make way for free jazz and diverse sonic improvisation, as Phil Hargreaves edits together the material to provide a personal narrative of Cadavre Esquis. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=275 review by Alex Young "No Traces" (review) Infraction Records, purveyors of fine ambience since 2001, serves up its first 2009 release in No Traces, a new recording whose sounding body clads itself in old raiment of vinyl scratch and radio crackle. Alexander ?Sleepy Town Manufacture? Ananyev and Stanislav ?Unit 21? Vdovin are the agents guiding discreet psychonavigations through Russian mind-fields. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=280 review by Alan Lockett "Not To Be Taken Away - Matt Weston" (review) Matt Weston fires out another solo release on his 7272Music label. Not to be Taken Away is a brave set of compositions documenting Mr. Weston's electronic experimentation with live percussion improvisation. What for the listener "should be taken away" from these collections of tracks, is that Matt is attempting to work on a few different levels. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=282 review by Derek Morton "Over All of Spain the Sky is Clear - Interbellum" (review) Interbellum plays a languid, melancholy soundtrack for rainy afternoons and Sunday mornings. The ocean waves on the album cover provide an apt allusion to the cello-piano duet's ever wandering melodies. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=279 review by Caleb Deupree "Signal Ruins" (review) In his instruments, Matthew Burtner - joined here by Juraj Kojs on piano and W. Aniseh Khan-Burtner on percussion and noise generators - does not find the condition for the amplification of man's tragic masks but the site of a symbiosis according to which instrumental bodies are comprised of a certain complex of possibilities. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=284 review by Max Schaefer "Sympathetic Vibration - Marcus Jones" (review) Often, recordings exist as complete works in themselves, or as documents or mementos of a live performance. Sympathetic Vibration is one of a rapidly expanding body of works that do not fit easily into either category, blurring the boundaries between recorded materials and live event. Stacey Sewell chats to its creator, phonographer and sound designer Markus Jones. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=274 review by Stacey Sewell "The Sad Sea - Hotel Hotel" (review) The fate of the Marie Celeste is one of those enduring stories charged with urban myth and intrigue, which still captures imaginations to this day. It is infused with all the imagery and emotion that is the foundation of the many artistic and literary interpretations of the story. With this in mind, Austin based post rockers Hotel Hotel have picked up the gauntlet and run with an ambient concept album The Sad Sea. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=277 review by Roger Mills "Two sides of RP Collier" (review) Portland, Oregon, might seem an unlikely location for an experimental collection of instruments that originated in sub-Saharan Africa, but Robert Patterson (aka RP) Collier not only builds them, he hooks them up to stomp boxes and wires them directly to computers. He plays conventional instruments as well, creating guitar improvisations that sound more like a group than a solo performance. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=278 review by Caleb Deupree "Under Voices: Les voix de la Tour Eiffel - China Blue" (review) China Blue has a romantic relationship with the Eiffel Tower. In 2005, her then boyfriend proposed to her from the top of this Paris landmark. Ultimately this led to a fascination with documenting the acoustic properties of the tower using a combination of special seismic and binaural microphones. What results is a varied album of mostly ambient pieces, inspired by the sounds of environmental forces on architecture. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=281 review by Derek Morton Roger Mills Editor, Furthernoise to unsubscribe please go to http://www.furthernoise.org/unsubscribe.php?ID= -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Jeremy is well-known for his project with Jason Henry, his experimedia imprint and for his graphic/photo/video work. "lbrnm" contains 3 reinterpretations of a koen park-piece titled "laburnum" originally released on the highly recommended "grey night clouds" release on experimedia. The original work sounds very clean, deep and calming. It is dominated by a own heartbeat, created with a higher "gong" tone and a subtle beat, giving the piece a very specific structure. The reinterpretations by Jeremy break this structure. He slightly shifts some elements further into the background, accents other elements, fills in some easeful parts and carefully adds some very, very gentle field-recordings, glitches and sounds. You can still hear the old elements and find some links to the basic material, but new atmospheres emerge from the original sources in these three pieces. A bit more drone, dustier, rustier, and more open. The original track is a great ambient-electronic-work. And with these three re-workings by Jeremy, you can get further perspective into this wonderful material. -- -- Jeremy Bible --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Experimedia - record label + mailorder shop + a/v arts (est.2000) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- experimedia.net jeremybible.com jbjh.experimedia.net myspace.com/experimedia --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From philippe-petit at wanadoo.fr Sun Feb 15 03:19:50 2009 From: philippe-petit at wanadoo.fr (Philippe Petit) Date: Sun, 15 Feb 2009 09:19:50 +0100 Subject: [microsound-announce] tracklisting for my radio show tonight Message-ID: BiP_HOp Generation on Radio Grenouille // 88.8 FM Sunday evenings : 19:00 - 20:00 PM // Marseille // France http://www.grenouille888.org February 15 Judith Juillerat : bo-peep "VA. Whistling Tree Frogs Recorded in Bathsheba on the wild east coast of Barbados. Every nightfall is celebrated by a chorus of a million whistling tree frogs (Eleutherodactylus johnstonei), singing over a background of palm trees rustling in the wind, and the distant drone of the Atlantic Ocean. These tree frogs are tiny - on one night, I crawled around on a field with a flashlight, trying to find the frog that I heard whistling directly in front of me, but without success. The incessant, almost static, quite loud sound tapestry woven from ocean, wind, cicadas, and the pointillist tone cluster of the whistling frogs, going on for hours every night, conveyed to me a strong sense of timelessness. 2. Giant Bamboo Very large specimen of these magnificent bamboo trees can be found in many places on Barbados. Even on a moderately windy day, such a bamboo produces a wide range of sounds, from piano (leaving space for the occasional birdsong or frog whistling) to a sudden fortissimo, turning the bamboo stems into a clattering, rustling, squeaking percussion orchestra. This one was recorded in a magical tropical garden called ?Flower Forest?. During the recording, I was drinking coffee while watching green monkeys having lunch in the top branches of a giant breadfruit tree. 2 Tracks (50:44) CD-R (50 copies) ? 12.00 [order] http://www.gruenrekorder.de/shop/#Gr_063 [artist] http://www.gruenrekorder.de/?page_id=350 www.michaelpeters.de www.gruenrekorder.de Photo whistling frog: Lindsay Rudder Field Recording Series by Gruenrekorder Gruenrekorder / Germany / 2009 / Gr 063 / LC 09488 From j.m.duarte.r at gmail.com Mon Feb 16 07:55:35 2009 From: j.m.duarte.r at gmail.com (Joao Ricardo) Date: Mon, 16 Feb 2009 12:55:35 +0000 Subject: [microsound-announce] [EdP001] Astronota - Speeed Message-ID: <8925530d0902160455k3796bb21o80a1d8fb4a4a2c65@mail.gmail.com> This project results from the manipulation of sonic potential. Sound is pressure evolving around us. It is not music. Music is related to persons, to what we realise in our heads. Sound can be anything and most of the time has not a particular appeal to the common citizen. The main reason for this is possibly that the subject requires some skills and interests which are outside those generally possessed by the musical community. Another reason is that music has never developed the prestige and authority of a language. Consequently music related people and interested outsiders from other fields feel free to offer your ideas and opinions about sound subjects in a way that you would never do about music. free download here: http://doporto.pt.to -- http://ocp.pt.vu -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Info + video samples follow. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or proposals! Derek *** Neanderthal Electronics: an instrument-building workshop by Derek Holzer More than 40,000 years ago, our Neanderthal ancestors invented the first music instruments from simple objects around them (bones and stones, sticks and skins...), without reference to any existing music history, and primarily for their own pleasure rather than that of others. Nowadays, we use complex audio hardware and software which make it "easier" to create music, so long as we channel our creativity into such socially acceptable avenues as Western Classical or Minimal Techno. As with any established genre, the results are often completely predictable, and therefore quite boring. But some of us, deep in our wild hearts, still long for the Stone Age simplicity of pure noise! The Neanderthal Electronics workshops are designed for approximately 8-10 people, possibly with a background in sound, but with no previous electronics experience. Over 5 days, they are shown how to use simple objects from our modern environment (resistors, capacitors, transistors, LEDs, integrated circuit chips...) to design and build their own personal, customized primitive noise synthesizers. A final presentation allows the participants to demonstrate and play their creations, as well as allows the audience to make their own experiments with the newly built instruments. This workshop has been realized so far at: Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, Denmark (Feb 2009) Tartu Art Month, Tartu, Estonia (Feb 2009) with future workshops under discussion to to take place in Germany, Estonia and the UK. The workshop is currently available for booking in Europe during Spring and Summer 2009. The completely improvised audio performance will feature experimental Shenzhen-based sound artist Zen Lu collaborating via weblink with Toronto's I/O Media collective to create a unique, "conversational" soundscape for the audience. The video component will come from public submissions, which were solicited via social networking websites in both China and North America. Contributors were asked to base their abstract efforts around the theme of 'perceiving ideology through media,' a nod to the impact modern media and technology has on all global artists. So far submissions have already come in from the United States, Toronto and Beijing. During the performance, these videos will be manipulated and processed in real-time via custom-designed software, then broadcast via a Chinese arts website, www.neocha.com. "The video submissions we've received so far are intense. It's very interesting to see artists' response to the theme, given that they are all from different backgrounds." says Siya Chen, who helped found TANSO. SOUNDREACH offers a chance to see a live and cosmopolitan collaboration between cutting edge Canadian and Chinese experimental sound & video artists and is the first event of it's kind in Toronto. ABOUT IDEA OF SOUTH - Sound Map Installation (work in progress) Roger Mills & Neil Jenkins. 21st February - 15th March 2009 Loop Space Gallery, Newcastle. 109 Hunter St, Newcastle, N.S.W. Inspired by our relocation from the United Kingdom to Australia twelve months ago, Idea of South explores the quintessence of southern sentience through sound. Part phonography and part psycogeography, Idea of South maps an evolving collage of sound events through a web map interface supplied by artists and sound recordists contributions of recordings from locations throughout the southern hemisphere. As a work in progress, this impressionist soundscape will evolve as more sounds are added and there is an ongoing call for submissions. The coordinates from each location will also plot an indeterminate tonal composition for a radiophonic work to be performed in the Autumn. He has released tracks under the Nexsound, Sirr, and/OAR, Frozen Elephants Music, Mandorla and Gruenrekorder labels, and has co-initiated several internet projects for field recording and collaborative soundscapes including Soundtransit.nl TONEWHEELS is an experiment in converting graphical imagery to sound, inspired by some of the pioneering 20th Century electronic music inventions. Transparent tonewheels with repeating patterns are spun over light-sensitive electronic circuitry to produce sound and light pulsations and textures. This all-analog set is performed entirely live without the use of computers, using only overhead projectors as light source, performance interface and audience display. In this way, TONEWHEELS aims to open up the "black box" of electronic music and video by exposing the working processes of the performance for the audience to see. http://www.umatic.nl/info_derek.html http://www.myspace.com/macumbista Joel Cahen performs noiz-electronique and sometimes mash ups under the name of Spax. The bulk of his performances are of materials from his recorded works. He has released 4 albums which all combine elements of folk song with electronic passages. He also occasionally performs solo sets which are generally improvised and incorporate un-usual sound sources with song in some way. "For while his name might conjure up the pastoral in a distinctly old-fashioned sense, Leafcutter John's great success on 'The Forest And The Sea' is to blend traditional sounds and vocals that cry forth from the ordinary folk long past, with mastery of technology and laptop proficiency. And it's a journey, too, not just an escape from the urban jungle, but a progress of learning, adventure, and discovery." Luke Turner ?Play Louder http://www.myspace.com/leafcutterjohn http://leafcutterjohn.com/ Lina Lapelyte works as a sound artist, performs live using violin and electronics. One of her field of interests is collecting information and changing its meaning by putting it into a different context. Many of her sound installations are site specific and deal with the evoking of a sense of place through its own live input ? people, their voices, nature, kinetic energy. She is a composer and performer in the laptop quartet 20,21- the ensemble devoted to the performances of graphical notation scores. She produces experimental radio programs for the ResonanceFM radio station. Her music was used in films made by Anja Kirchner, Bruse la Bruse. Being creative and enjoying other people's creative endeavors are only a couple ways of doing that. Like anything else, social networking sites or digital animation art only have as much value as you want to give them. I persoanlly don't see either being any less valuable than the other. The original recording was made by ?douard-L?on Scott de Martinville on April 9, 1860 using his own invention, the phonautograph, and consists of a series of scratches on a roll of blackened paper. Scott had never developed a way to play back his recordings and they went unheard for 148 years. In 2008, scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory converted the thin lines back into audio, allowing us to hear a woman singing a segment of the folk song ?Au Clair de la Lune?. INFREQUENCY made an open call was made for artists to submit their own interpretations of the 1860 recording by ?douard-L?on Scott. This project is a conceptual extension of breathing life back into this document through modern technology; deciphering a voice that was etched into a thin layer of oil lamp smoke, and featuring a diverse group of international contemporary composers, creating new works from this ten second piece of history. Richard Lainhart's contribution, "La Lune dans la Lumi?re de Jour" (The Moon in the Light of Day) uses only the original recording as its sound source, to which he applies extreme time-stretching and spectral transformations to create a haunting new work of mysterious metallic timbres. This free, digital-only release from INFREQUENCY collects together nine exceptional submissions as high quality MP3s. Neumann, who edited it, translated the spatial experience of the live concert to this stereo version. The chronological order of the concert was kept, but condensed. No sounds or effects were added. For the original concert, the four performers created a set-up, which took place in three rooms inside the gallery and outside the gallery. Each of the four performers had his own position and function within the set-up and with each position made a certain statement about the relationship between inside and outside. Message-ID: <476636.90475.qm@web46210.mail.sp1.yahoo.com> html version (including covers) here: http://www.staalplaat.com/shop_updates/shop_updates_online2.html Artist: Muslimgauze Title: Sycophant of Purdah Label: Staalplaat Cat#: 17491 Code#: archive nine (unreleased material) Format: Cd digipak "Part of Staalplaat's ongoing Muslimgauze archive series, Sycophant of Purdah was submitted in 1994 then ?replaced? by another master Bryn Jones felt more fit for release. Sycophant then languished in the vaults until present, nearly a decade after Jones' passing. It is no secret that Jones was a prolific artist and that numerous labels combined could not keep up with his output and will take several more years more for them to do so. Sycophant opens with a radio broadcast on the on-going Palestinian crisis set to breakbeats and marmalade-thick bass lines; the forward to another sonic treatise on struggles of the Muslim world. Tracks that follow are more consistent with Industrial stylings of the Muslimgauze oeuvre including Zealot, Blue Mosque, Silknoose and Izlamaphobia. Industrial, in the context of Muslimgauze, is often characterized by tightly woven percussion loops with scant variance while melodies hover. Additionally, tracks like ?Radif, Avaz And Dastgah? and ?Mossad Evil? are another facet of Industrial, Industrial in the classic sense of the word meaning, 'mechanical', 'machine like', with little in the way of melodic overtones. The commonality is rigorous, dogmatic structure that are nonetheless hypnotic and engaging. Because the above albums vary, despite being of the same sub-genre, Sycophant could be considered a 'missing link' that ties them together?with ethno-breaks added for variance. None of the track listings, handwritten by Jones, are repeated on any other release hence Sycophant of Purdah is a 'must have' for fans and collectors." Text by Ibrahim Khider, author of ?Muslimgauze: Chasing the Shadow of Bryn Jones? Track List: 1. Jerico Loop-Bin Duplicator. 2. Enzyme Bangalore. 3. Sycophant Of Purdah. 4. Mehmet Quarter. 5. Radif, Avaz and Dastgah. 6. 7. For Muntaz. 8. Dupatta. 9. Jerico Loop-Bin Duplicator. 10. 11. Cairo Mercedes. 12. Enzyme Bangalore. 13. Mossad Evil. 14. Artist: Muslimgauze Title: Sulaymaniyah Label: Staalplaat Cat#: 17492 Code#: archive seven (unreleased material) Format: Cd digipak "Sulaymaniyah is part of Staalplaat's ongoing Muslimgauze archive series, masters originally submitted in 1997, then ?replaced? by what became Vampire of Tehran released early in 1998. It was not uncommon for the prolific Bryn Jones to replace masters with what he believed to be a more fit release. Short of two tracks, ?Fez Tishan? and ?Hamas Pulse of Revenge?, this is Vampire of Tehran with nine additional, unreleased tracks. Because Sulaymaniyah was ?replaced?, it was stored in Staalplaat's vault's until a decade after Jones' passing and it will take several more years before they have completely caught up with additional ?replaced? and unreleased masters. Sulaymaniyah is stylistically varied and has ethno-electro, ethno-breakbeat along with several dub cuts. Ethno-electro/breaks are analogous to urban dance/hip hop with catchy, distortion ridden breaks and heavily edited ethnic music, cut-up and reassembled into Frankenstein hybrids?sometimes further complicated with dub elements. Wanton mixtures of styles are one of many defining qualities of Muslimgauze music. Like ?replaced? masters, versions of tracks such as ?Arabs Improved Zpain? and ?Arabs Return Zpain? demonstrate Jones' near obsessive search for the right sound. For those who appreciate the latter, rhythmic ethno-breaks and dub phase of Muslimgauze circa Tandoori Dog, or completists, Sulaymaniyah is a ?must have?. Text by Ibrahim Khider, author of ?Muslimgauze: Chasing the Shadow of Bryn Jones? Track List: 1. Full Metal Yashmak. 2. Disinfekt. 3. Nadir. 4. Satsuma Tablet. 5. Arabs Improved Zpain. 6. You should also be suspicious when companies don't actually show you a photo of what they mean by "digipak". This is another term that is used loosely and can be misleading, and you shouldn't have to sign up for a membership in order to get this kind of basic information. One more comment: They make what they're doing sound like it's some kind of "new revolution" when in fact it's been going on for the past 7 or 8 years... Good luck with it though! These presentation-and-discussion meetings aim to explore different forms of live visuals (live video, live film, live slide projection and their variations and combinations) and the different ways they can come into interaction with live audio. Each evening features two different live visual artists or groups of artists who each perform a set with the live sound artists of their choice. The presentations are followed by an informal discussion about the artists' practices over a cup of green tea. A third artist, from previous generations of visualists or related fields, is invited specifically to participate in this discussion so as to create a dialogue between current and past practices and provide different perspectives on the present and the future. About the artists: Richard Lainhart is an award-winning composer, author, and filmmaker. He studied composition and electronic music with Joel Chadabe at the State University of New York at Albany, and has worked and performed with John Cage, David Tudor, Steve Reich, Phill Niblock, David Berhman, and Jordan Rudess, among many others. He's also played vibes in a swing band; composed music for film, television, CD-ROMs, interactive applications, and the Web; engineered audio for recordings and live sound; and served as technical director at Intelligent Music, a pioneering music software company. His compositions have been performed in the US, England, Sweden, Germany, Australia, and Japan. Recordings of his music have appeared on the Periodic Music, Vacant Lot, XI Records, ExOvo and Airglow Music labels and are distributed online via MusicZeit. As an active performer, Lainhart has appeared in public approximately 2000 times. He has composed over 100 electronic and acoustic works, and has been making music for 40 years. In 2008, he was commissioned by the Electronic Music Foundation to contribute a work to New York Soundscape (www.arts-electric.org/stories/080511_nycsoundscape.html). Lainhart's animations and short films have been shown in festivals in the US, Canada, Germany, and Korea, and online at ResFest, The New Venue, The Bitscreen, and Streaming Cinema 2.0. His film "A Haiku Setting" won awards in several categories at the 2002 International Festival of Cinema and Technology in Toronto. In 2008, he was awarded a Film & Media grant by the New York State Council on the Arts for "No Other Time", full-length intermedia performance designed for a large reverberant space, combining live analog electronics with four-channel playback, and high-definition computer-animated film projection. You can find examples of his music and digital artworks at his website, http://www.otownmedia.com. Some of his short films are available at http://www.vimeo.com/rlainhart. Domenico Sciajno was born in Torino (Italy) in 1965. He is based in Palermo since 1999. A double bass player and composer, he studied 'Instrumental and Electronic Composition' with Gilius Van Bergeijk and Double bass in the 'Royal Conservatory' of Den Haag in Holland. His interest in improvisation and the influence of academic education bring his research to the creative possibilities given by the interaction between acoustic instruments, indeterminacy factors and their live processing by electronic devices or computers. From 1992 he has played at some of the most important festivals as musician, improviser or composer in the contemporary and experimental music scene and some of his work is documented by worldwide independent labels of experimental and electronic music. The wide spectrum of his experiences bring him very close to the concept of performance, where he uses texts and electronics in combination with a choreografic use of the scene space and the projection of visuals made by himself. He also makes Interactive Sound Installations for art galleries and exhibitions. He is also an activist in the developement of experimental arts. In 1995 he founded the association Antitesi and from 1995 and 1998 organized concerts and little festivals (Antitesi in musica ?95/?96, Folk it out! ?97, i(n)terazioni ?98, Inaudito! ?99). In 1997 he collaborated to give birth to the Fringes record label. In 2003 he started toghether with other musicians the label Bowindo and founded the national collective iXem (italian eXperimental electronic music). In the 2004 edition of Prix Ars Electronica his work OUR UR in collaboration with Alvin Curran received an honorary mention. http://www.sciajno.net http://www.myspace.com/sciajno Gene Coleman is a composer, musician and director. He has created over 50 works for various instrumentation and media, often using complex notations and improvisation in the same score. Innovative use of sound, image, space and time allows Coleman to create work that expands our understanding of the world. Since 2001 his work has focused on the global transformation of culture and music's relationship with other media, such as architecture, video and dance. He studied painting, music and film making at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where his principle teachers included legendary experimental film artists Stan Brakhage and Ernie Gehr, as well as Robert Snyder (sonic arts) and Barbara Rossi (painting). Since 2000 he has been the artistic director of Soundfield, a producing and presenting organization with operations in Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, New York and internationally. His ongoing projects feature musicians from many parts of the globe. More info at: http://www.soundfield.org Zach Layton is a composer, curator, improviser and new media artist based in Brooklyn with an interest in biofeedback, generative algorithms, experimental culture and architecture. His work investigates complex relationships and topologies created through the interaction of simple core elements like sine waves, minimal surfaces and kinetic visual patterns.
