Everyone welcome. 60X60 DANCE CANADA is a project containing 60 solo choreographies to 60 electroacoustic pieces by 60 Canadian composers, each piece 60 seconds or less in duration. The pieces are sequenced together without pause to form an exactly one hour long performance. The sound will be projected in multichannel through 8 loudspeakers, and the dance and music will be accompanied by live video projection of an analog clock, spectrographic images, and dance footage. This event is the third (and biggest) of the Canadian 60x60 Dance, organized by Eldad Tsabary, Violaine Morinville, Tim Sutton, and Rob Voisey. Through this inter-artistic hour-long collaborative creation, 60x60 seeks to support and highlight the contemporary art community. This show is presented in collaboration with the Canadian Electroacoustic Community (CEC). After having travelled a lot and played with many musicians, subtly appreciating noise and instability we naturally sought to move towards a more relaxed and comforting atmosphere. Our collaboration with Robert Engelbrecht, of the Hamburg collective Nelly Boyd and our encounter with Phill Niblock and Eliane Radigue also pushed us to take a calm and slower route. Thus we started rehearsing again, in a simple way, just the two of us, composing along these lines. And this is what come out of it. -eddie135- From andrecastro at c-e-m.org Fri Dec 4 11:01:34 2009 From: andrecastro at c-e-m.org (Andre Castro) Date: Fri, 04 Dec 2009 17:01:34 +0100 Subject: [microsound-announce] NK PRESENTS Hannes Hoelzl Joker Nies Alberto de Campo 5TH Dec = Berlin Message-ID: <4B19325E.60407@c-e-m.org> NK PRESENTS Hannes Hoelzl Joker Nies Alberto de Campo 5TH December http://www.nkprojekt.de/ Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 8:00pm WHITE RABBIT Potsdamer Stra?e 98 / 10785 Berlin http://www.white-rabbit-berlin.com/ Hannes Hoelzl was born 1974 in Bolzano/I; he studied audio engineering in Graz/A and graduated as an MA in Sound&Music Technology at the Utrecht Arts Academy/NL. He works in various disciplines and constellations, always orbiting around the central focus of sound; with digital sound treatment and particulary the Open Source environment SuperCollider being his fundamental working tools. His developments in music aim at improvisation interfaces that enable the computer to keep up with the directness of the instrumentalists; at sound spatialisation with a similar improvisational approach, and at pseudo-intelligent sound objects that might be able to surprise the performer with unforseen turns, often inspired by outworldly electronic circuits like the ones that his fellow musician Joker Nies employs. Beyond acting as a performing musician, he works as a sound artist, designer, composer, software developer and instructor. He has played internationally in Europe and China, and his installative works have been exhibited, amonst others, in the Venice Biennale (2001, 2006), in ZKM Karlsruhe (D, 2006), Hamada children's Museum, Japan, and in London's National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. He has held lecures and workshops at Universities and Conservatories in Wesleyan/Connecticut, Duesseldorf, Prague, Oslo, Tokyo and Beijing. Recently, he was involved in a project for the international Arts Biennial Manifesta in Italy (www.manifesta7.it), where an old austrian fortress with 77 armoured rooms was turned into a huge listening space. Joker Nies lives and works in Cologne, Germany, as a musician, sound-designer, sound-engineer, fotographer and technical editor for the German Keyboards magazine. Since the early 80?s, Nies experiments with all kinds of electronic sound-sources, like modular-analog synthesizers, individually designed electronic devices, DSP-based systems (like Kyma/Capybara) and software based sound-sources. During the early 90?s, modifying the Omnichord became his initiation to what is known as circuit-bending. Since that time a steadily growing number of devices has been converted from simple toys into alien sound devices. For his live-performances the focus has completely moved away from computer hosted sound enviroments and shifted to analog electronics instead. His instruments, beneath the Omnichord, are carefully selected and modified electronics, and the outstanding instruments Rob Hordijk has built for him. Recent activities include software synth-design in MAX/MSP for the german Keyboards magazine, and production and sound design for radio-plays. Nies also leads workshops and tutorials about circuit-bending, DIY-instruments and synth-design in MAX/MSP. His musical activities are centered around an improvisational aproach, like with the Trio Die Schrauber or The K?P. He also cooperates in composition-based projects like the activities of the multimedia project REALTIME-RESEARCH and QUANTUM QUASI dance-projects. Joker Nies performed on festivals in all of Europe, USA and Mexico, with artists like John Butcher, Ernst Reijsinger, Birgit Uhler, Thomas Lehn, Alan Silva, Dave Tucker, Seth Josel, Hans Tammen, Mario De Vega, Gino Robair and many others. The individual recordings were to be used as the starting point of the performance in the same location, a slow sonic zooming-in to the self-same space shared with an audience, and an experiment in natural resonant feedback caused by playing the sound of a space back into itself. A handful of the spaces were particularly interesting, and I collect those here to highlight the notion of no space being neutral, and of each having it?s own living, breathing character. The spaces we hear here are St Stephen?s Church in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, the front lobby of the Baker Center for the Arts at Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pennsylvania, and the gallery space at the Pyramid Atlantic in Washington DC. At either end of this collection is a different kind of space, and one much closer to home: this is the sound of my mother?s backyard, on the edge of marshland in Abington, Massachusetts, with my personal favorite late-night sound of distant passing trains." you can all the works from both issues here: http://www.soundwalk.com/blog/category/editions ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ::: framework250 celebratory compilation ::: preparations are coming to a head for the release of 2 double cdr compilations in support of framework radio. more than 40 artists have contributed exclusive works for these 2 releases, which will be available only through the framework website as a thank-you in exchange for a minimum donation of ?25 (for one edition) or ?40 (for both). 25% of all donations goes directly to resonance 104.4fm in london. you can reserve yourself a copy of one or both by going to http://www.frameworkradio.net and donating now! cds will ship early in the new year... full tracklists: framework250 - root edition: jeph jerman / insects in bamboo / 10:01 loren chasse / furniture next to twilight / 12:57 nuno moita & matteo uggeri / machines help us / 04:49 felicity ford / celebrations / 06:23 tarab / untitled artefact / 10:34 murmer / many hands, no eyes / 12:42 scott sherk / victor's lament / 04:16 steve roden / six small storms / 05:40 peter cusack / rail contact hoverfly / 01:28 keith berry / archipelago / 10:06 peter cusack / rail contact trains / 01:41 toshiya tsunoda / vibration of the rope of a fishing boat under moor 12.aug.09 matsuwa, miura / 09:34 maria balabas / in principio erat verbum / 08:59 asmus tietchens / FMF 4/1A / 05:04 keith de mendonca / 4 nights in lhasa / 07:14 seth nehil / twine / 06:58 martin clarke / three / 07:00 maksims sentelevs / waterpiece / 10:00 hitoshi kojo / perruel / 07:03 dallas simpson / M25: radio/traffic / 07:00 eric cordier / montchalbeux / 10:16 framework250 - branch edition: jonathan coleclough & ben owen / two chambers / 09:13 toy.biarre / kdi dctb 146[i] / 07:08 mark schreiber / car window / 06:42 michael ruesenberg / steve welsh / 03:58 jim haynes / virga / 11:20 thomas tilly/TO / for julien / 09:42 john grzinich / sentience of spring / 10:16 jean-luc guionnet / diptyque de la veille / 09:35 emmanuel mieville / gnaoua song / 11:52 jez riley french / instamatic #5 - building 14, zlin, czech republic / 10:00 giancarlo toniutti / chooramuuk, girasrum (copper-nose, iron-hat) / 09:29 rie nakajima / stepless / 07:06 chris watson / ravens / 06:36 joel stern (w/ lloyd barrett) / mount disappointment / 11:53 richard garet / without walls / 09:37 aaron ximm / dusk in guantanamo / 06:00 michael northam / kashi-heatdream / 08:44 simon whetham / eesti tree creak / 04:15 phill niblock / bells and timps / 05:30 detailed track info will soon be available here: www.frameworkradio.net/framework250 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ thanks for reading to the bottom, and happy winter! we are expecting temperatures of minus 15 celcius here tomorrow, and as we approach the winter solstice the sun is gone by 15h30... but the fire is keeping me warm... best, patrick -- ||| http://www.murmerings.com ||| From info at moozak.org Sun Dec 13 17:34:26 2009 From: info at moozak.org (moozak.org) Date: Sun, 13 Dec 2009 23:34:26 +0100 Subject: [microsound-announce] wednesday/mittwoch 16/12 - KLUB MOOZAK #30 - LIVE: ANDREAS STOIBER (DE), THOMAS WAGENSOMMERER (AT) Message-ID: An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I tried to create scores for computers. Simple instructions for playing with few variables of sound generators, but always having the code available to improvise variations. Trying to each performance is different, partly because of human interpretation, and partly by random processes. nxScore002 is an extremely simple structure. I try to approach the concept of computer sheet music clearly. nxScore004 is a small glimpse into the world of granular synthesis. (With inspiration from ?scmute? in TecnoNucleo) In nxScore005 the improviser can only decide when to activate the generators after a warning. nxScore006 is my particular view of a drumbox. http://musicnumbers.wordpress.com/2009/12/14/nx003_livecode/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... O.K. Here it is what you have been waiting for. The long awaited 2010 60x60 Call for Works. AND It is all going to be done online! That is right! 60x60 is collaborating with ICMC (International Computer Music Conference 2010) for a unique 60x60 event and all the works submitted to 60x60 will be simultaneous submissions for ICMC. For this special event we are looking for 360 works for 6 one hour performances at Stony Brook University and New York City: 360 degrees of 60x60. We are also have an International Mix and a microtonal mix (the UnTwelve Mix) I also have venues for another UK Mix, Midwest Mix, Canada Mix, and Pacific Rim Mix. (if we get enough submissions. get it? if you submit.there is a possibility of 12 different mixes. that is 720 slots with a great chance of multiple performances around the globe and the possibility of a multimedia collaboration with video or dance that are getting press reviews and attending audiences in the thousands.) So what I need is your submission. Even if it is a past submission that will be great! There were so many submissions in the past that were great that we couldn't use for one reason or another, I would love to get the chance to present them now. But I need you to submit online. ICMC has an online submission process. http://music.oc.cct.lsu.edu/author/submit.php check the 60x60 box and then upload your ZIP file containing your submission form (PDF) and sound file (AIFF) (I know it says MP3 is allowed but don't do that for 60x60 submissions) you can get the submission form here: http://www.VoxNovus.com/60x60/Call.htm So tell everyone you know. This is going to be the biggest 60x60 yet. The idea is to activate the entire community of electro-acoustic music. I think we can do it. Let's wake up the world and show them what our music is about! I am looking forward to listening to your submission! Rob Robert Voisey RobVoisey at VoxNovus.com 60x60 Director Living Music Foundation Vice President Founder of Vox Novus http://www.VoxNovus.com Oh yeah.... Here is the call: Vox Novus is inviting composers to submit recorded works 60 seconds or less in length to be included in its eighth annual 60x60 project! Download Submission form here: 60x60 PDF Submission Form or 60x60 MSWord Submission Form Vox Novus In collaboration with ICMC (International Computer Music Conference 2010) is inviting composers to submit recorded works 60 seconds or less in length to be included in its seventh annual 60x60 project. 60 compositions will be selected to be played continuously in a one-hour concert. The 60x60 concert season will have multiple performances in several different mixes and multi-media throughout the world. Mixes planned for 60x60 2010 include the International Mix, 360 degrees of 60x60 at ICMC, the UnTwelve Mix (including only microtonal works) as well as any other past mix (i.e. Midwest Mix, UK Mix, etc) where more than 60 submissions are received. Please submit a ZIP file containing the submission form and an AIFF recording of the work at the ICMC website: http://music.oc.cct.lsu.edu/author/submit.php During the concert each of the 60 pieces selected will begin precisely at the beginning of the minute, this will mark the end of one piece and the beginning of another. There will be no pause between the pieces. Works may be less than 60 seconds in length, but may not exceed 60 seconds. Works selected that are less than 60 seconds long will be "padded" with silence either before, after, or surrounding the composition. Please note that the total duration of the work including silence may NOT exceed sixty seconds. The 60x60 project's definition of a record work is as follows: any work created as a musical composition which is captured on recorded media, which does not require live performers for its production in broadcast at concert halls, radio, multi-media, etc. Its creation can include but not limited to acoustic instruments, voice, environmental sources, and computer (Sampling, MIDI, C Sound, ProTools, etc.) Acoustic compositions should be submitted with the understanding that it is their recording that is of prime importance and is what will be used to determine its selection. Scores of works are strongly discouraged and will not be used in the selection process. 60x60 is a project of "signature works" and short works created specifically for the 60x60 project. Excerpts of larger works are strongly discouraged. Works generated from procedures (i.e. mathematical matrices, organizational systems, or computer programs,) remixed works, or themes and motives recomposed from other of the composer's own work are acceptable. The call is open to composers of any nationality, age, or career stage. Works submitted must not have been previously performed or broadcasted. The submission form must be sent at the same time with the submitted work. Submission form must contain the composer's name, address, email, phone number, composition title, and composition length (60 seconds or less.) Biographies and program notes may be no longer than 100 words in length. Submissions must be uploaded by December 31st, 2009. Selected works will be announced on February 15th, 2010. Submissions must include: Submission Forms as a PDF or MSWord can be downloaded at: http://www.VoxNovus.com/60x60/Call.htm The ZIP file including the submission form and the AIFF sound file must be uploaded at ICMC website: http://music.oc.cct.lsu.edu/author/submit.php or http://music.oc.cct.lsu.edu/openconf.php Works selected for the 2010 60x60 project will be announced on February 15th, 2010. 'Yokomono Pro' at CTM.10 With an eye on CTM.10, Geert-Jan Hobijn / Staalplaat Soundsystem (www.staalplaat.org) and sound artists Ilpo V?is?nen and Mika Vainio (Pan Sonic) are busy preparing the outdoor sound-performance-action 'Yokomono-Pro'. Staalplaat Soundsystem has won international renown for public actions devoted to investigating the sound properties of everyday objects, gadgets and different varieties of architecture, and immersing the audience in new auditory experiences. We still need YOU! For the performance on Sunday, 31 January 2010, we need a total of 30 volunteers, each with his/her own car, to be sound-drivers. Yokomono-Pro features several groups of cars - 30 vehicles in total - playing synched sound-patterns and driving a carefully choreographed route around a specific (tba) location for a period of approx. 30 minutes. Each vehicle's battery is hooked up to a specially designed horn that is triggered by low-frequency transmitters linked to a central controlling unit. After dividing the vehicles/drivers into groups and assigning each a specific route, Ilpo V?is?nen and Mika Vainio are able to 'play' them like an instrument: the interaction of choreographed traffic and the horns' sound patterns creates a composition tailored to the spatial dimensions of the action. The low-frequency transmitters will not interfere with any 'official' radio signals. The vehicles' original horns remain independent of the added-on 'action-horns' and function as per usual at all times. Installation of the extra components is temporary and simple. No original car parts will be modified or removed so there is no danger of damage to participants' vehicles. Nor does the action restrict or impair public traffic. The individual movements that make up the car-choreography (changing lanes, stopping, etc) proceed in compliance with German traffic regulations. If you interested in taking part in this extraordinary experiment and have a Car license and or car at hand, please drop us a line at: yokomono at clubtransmediale.de Thanks for your time, have a great weekend, staalplaat board -- central station: http://zeromoon.com/rinus the latest news: http://rinusvanalebeek.wordpress.com http://daskleinefieldrecordingsfestival.org From expe at madicoinc.com Fri Dec 18 09:40:06 2009 From: expe at madicoinc.com (Max & Mark) Date: Fri, 18 Dec 2009 09:40:06 -0500 Subject: [microsound-announce] some of my new tracks / [vau001] various and uneasy vol.01 Message-ID: <36796C07E66945A295A6451A2D392626@madico.com> so i decided to start a sub_serie of releases to the pertin_nce catalogue it's called various and uneasy and it'll feature some various tracks by various artists that are willing to release their uneasy music. i decided this not long ago, so i start the party with my own uneasy tracks.... here is the basic details and download links : label : pertin_nce cat. number : vau001 artists : various (bleupulp / maxime tanguay) title : various and uneasy vol.01 track listing : 1- esp-blanc 2- toke-reca-ue 3- small-places 4- tox-icity sounds like : electronic, experimental, techno, weird, dark download & stream (v/a formats) : http://www.archive.org/details/vau001 enjoy! Message-ID: <84E95CC8-2D27-49F2-AEF3-F990DB821DA4@commtom.com> I did the sound design for the winning entry in the Babelgum Metropolis Art Prize. Details below: Babelgum, the independent web and mobile video content platform, today announces the winners of its latest effort to showcase new emerging art stars, the Babelgum Metropolis Art Prize chaired by iconic art- house actress and video artist Isabella Rossellini. Launched in September 2009, the contest attracted over 400 videos representing the work of the best and edgiest artists on six continents, competing for three main prizes worth a total of $30,000. The winning videos, two runner-ups in each category and two Special Mentions entries will be screened at a free public event in New York?s Times Square on December 17 at 7 pm hosted by head judge Isabella Rossellini, which will also include a screening of her latest short film co-directed by Guy Maddin, ?Send Me to the ?Lectric Chair.? The Babelgum Metropolis Grand Prize ($20,000) went to Denver, Colorado- based artist Christopher Coleman for ?The Magnitude of the Continental Divide.? An animation exploring the way we define ourselves and our nations, the piece deals with various states of withdrawal and aggression. It is a think-piece on the state of modern warfare, where weapons and damage are dealt impersonally from afar. A 2003 MFA graduate of New York State University in Buffalo, Coleman is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Denver. The artist was twice a participant in the VIPER Basel Festival in Switzerland and has had his work in exhibitions in many countries including Singapore, Finland, Sweden, Italy, Germany, France, China, the UK and Latvia. His winning entry can be viewed at www.babelgum.com/4003543/the-magnitude-the-continental-divides.html . Sound design for Coleman's winning video was composed by David Fodel. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In January 2010 we kick off ZDLT in London with clients of a charity for homeless people; recycling hardware, breaking Windows and installing FOSS. We will build media laptops and then use them to create music, graphics and video for distribution over the Internet. Participants will leave the project with street-smart technical knowledge and a wireless enabled media laptop, classier than any shiny power-book. Participants will also be invited to take part in wider ZDLT cultural activities: music making, public exhibitions and publications. ------------------------------------------------- Artistic Team: Jake Harries and James Wallbank (Access Space) Ruth Catlow, Marc Garrett and Olga Panades (furtherfield.org) For more information contact Ruth Catlow - ruth[dot]catlow[at]furtherfield[dot]org The Zero Dollar Laptop Project http://www.furtherfield.org/zerodollarlaptop.php The Zero Dollar Laptop project is a programme of workshops, public debates, exhibitions and networks of skills and media sharing for arts, technology and the environment. Transforming radiophonic silences into sound stories. 04 - 08Jan 2010 from 14:00 to 17:00h. At NK: Elsenstr. 52/ 2.Hinterhaus Etage 2 12059 Berlin Neuk?lln http://www.nkprojekt.de ***************************************************************** Radio Fragments is a radiophonic project that aims to explore an auditory attention, different from the one usually associated with the experience of listening to the radio, making use of the spaces-in-between-words-and-songs that occur throughout the radiophonic discourse as its main reagent. Its basic formula consists of an analysis-control mechanism (built in Super Collider) residing inside a computer to which a real-time mainstream radio broadcast is fed. This mechanism acts as a reversed-noise-gate, singling out what is usually ignored or avoided in a radiophonic context (whispers, stumbles, pauses, dead spaces and errors) and muting all the other sounds such as words or songs. These punctuating fragments become the raw materials from which Radio Fragments' sonic concoction is brewed. Recordings of Radio Fragments in action can be heard in http://www.c-e-m.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/RadioFragments/ Andr? Castro (b.1983) is a sound artist from Lisbon, graduated in Sonic Arts at Middlesex University(U.K). Andr?s practice has been shifting between two different universes. On the one hand, the computer music world, with its meditative textures, harsh noisy sounds, blips, and experiments with costume-built software in SuperCollider. On the other hand, a phonographic activity, in which he goes out with a microphone trying to capture the incredible aural diversity of our world and the voices and stories that hide in each person. Most of Andr????????s work has in common the evasion of visual elements, an acousmatic sound that aims to subvert the dominance of the vision over the other senses. In recent years he has nourished a growing interest for the radiophonic medium, which has become a fruitful source of inspiration and for which he has been creating pieces since the last 3 years. A significant part of his practice has been developed through collaborations with other artists, such as the ongoing improvised music duo with Martin Aaserud. Message-ID: <5a9dc0d60912291038k599db0bfo14c7c558c82e3210@mail.gmail.com> Greetings dear friends in music, With the end of the decade (including the end of the 20% off sale), and the beginning of Experimedia's 10 year anniversary just a few days away I wanted to take a moment to once again thank everyone who has supported or worked with me in anyway over the past ten years. The support I have received, especially over the past two years, has been inspiring and I want you all to know I plan to continue to work hard for the better of the community as a whole. Happy new years wishes to everyone and best of luck in all the you do in 2010!!! //EXP.DISTRO As many of you are probably aware, the big project on my plate right now is expanding Experimedia into a distribution network in the North American territory. In an effort to build my connections with North American retailers I ask that you share with me the names and cities of independent music retailers and mailorders that you are aware of. My goal with the distribution efforts is to help our specific community grow and gain exposure on the shelves of more shops across North America. I will be working through a list of retailers, contacting them by email, phone, and snail-mail, making them aware of the titles I have available to them. There are many labels which are being overlooked or not properly represented by North American distributors. Having played various roles in our music community, viewing it from various angles, and as someone with a personal connection to this music I will be working towards going above and beyond the standard role of th e average distributor. I plan to represent and promote the titles I distribute as if they were my very own (artist, and label). My long term ultimate vision for Experimedia is to see it grow into a global support and distribution network for the community.... recruiting other like minded and motivated individuals into the operations here in North America and overseas. A resource for labels and artists, with info sharing on distribution, artwork, package design, printing, manufacturing, radio, press, venues, etc. A network of labels, artists, services, that share their info and experiences into an informational resource. A way to keep the work and flow of money as close to the community as possible so that it may flourish as a whole. Keeping it in the family so to speak. The music community has been the only constant in my life for the past 16 years since I organized some of my first local events when I was 14. All of those people I connec t deepest with and consider my friends have come from my involvement with the music community.... many who I have yet to meet..... so my work I do here truly is very personal to me.... and I do see and approach the community as family. //DIGITAL.DISTRO One of the many puzzle pieces towards these goals has been put in its place already. I have partnered with David Newman (know for his work as Autistici, and his label Audiobulb) who has recently started his own digital distribution services, AUDIOMOVES.COM . David's Audiomoves is now the official digital distribution partner of Experimedia. Obviously David has a deep understanding and connection to the kind of music I deal with so this is an ideal partnership and keeps right with the goal of "keeping it in the family". Basically this means not only will Audiomoves be handling the digital distribution of Experimedia titles but I will be connecting labels I work with directly, to David who will offer to advice and manage the distribution of labels titles into wide and growing range of stores including, iTunes, Napster, eMusic, Amazon, 24-7 Entertainment, 7Digital, Big Pond, Gracenote, Shockhound, Medianet, Myspace Music, Neurotic, Nokia, Omnifone, Puretracks, R2G, Rhapsody, Rogers Wireless, Secury Cast, Slacker, Sony Erickson, Spotify, Starzik, Telus, Verizon Wireless, Zune. While I know many of you are not fans of digital formats I do feel it is an important aspect in the landscape of music distribution. I see it as one of the many ways to turn music lovers, especially those from younger generations, onto the work coming from our community, perhaps turning them onto the joys of the physical package. If you are interested in digital distribution review his website and contact him through http://www.audiomoves.com //EXP.SALE Just a note that the 20% off sale will be ending this Friday. Being the holidays and the end of the year there are not any new title additions to the shop to announce so I would like to take a moment to highlight some fantastic and perhaps overlooked titles that may have become buried amongst the many additons //These two albums by Chrisian Vasseur on the Humming Conch label are indeed fantastic explorations with guitar. Impressive skill here and beautiful music. Was the perfect score to my drive to amish country Ohio over the weekend. christian vasseur - alam (cd) christian vasseur - poems (cd) //Two new releases on the absolutely exceptional Erased Tapes label. Cinematic inspired work at its finest. Both premium pressed records also include free download codes in them.
