Here is the latest free download on MPRNTBL: AT THE EDGE OF THIS FOREST Double Blind http://www.mprntbl.com/ http://www.mprntbl.com/mprn-003.html Double Blind improvised alternative soundtracks inspired by the short films of the Brothers Quay, recorded live at {open}, Long Beach, CA, October 19, 2006. "Enjoy a feast for the senses as the already stimulating Quay films undergo radical transformations at the hands of some of the most interesting experimental musicians in Southern California" (OC Weekly). Participants included Glenn Bach, Jessica Catron, Jeremy Drake, shea M gauer, Jorge Martin, Joseph Richard Negro, scott A peterson, Michael Raco-Rands, and Marco Schindelmann. Administered by Glenn Bach, Double Blind explores the intersection between the analog and digital in both live improvised performances and collaborative studio soundscapes. Double Blind enjoys a dynamic and fluctuating membership, depending on the project and location. Wounded Speaker, released January 2009 on MPRNTBL, has generated an offshoot project, Signal Out, forthcoming on MPRNTBL. Their current project, At the Edge of this Forest, features a live recording of alternative soundtracks inspired by the short films of the Brothers Quay. MPRNTBL is a net label dedicated to quiet music, lowercase, free improvisation, field recordings, analog noise, and collaborative soundscapes. Forthcoming releases from Intense Situations of Peril, Lisle Ellis + Marcos Fernandes, and Aaron Ximm. More than 40,000 years ago, our Neanderthal predecessors invented the first music instruments from simple objects around them (bones and stones, sticks and skins...), without reference to any existing music history, and primarily for their own pleasure rather than that of others. Nowadays, we use complex audio hardware and software which make it "easier" to make music, so long as we channel our creativity into such socially acceptable avenues as Western Classical or Minimal Techno. As with any established genre, the results are often completely predictable, and therefore quite boring. But some of us, deep in our wild hearts, still long for the Stone Age simplicity of pure noise! This 5 day workshop is designed for 8-10 people, possibly with a background in sound, but with no previous electronics experience. They are shown how to use simple objects from our modern environment (resistors, capacitors, transistors, LEDs, integrated circuit chips...) to design and build their own personal, customized primitive noise synthesizers. Each is a tiny world of its own, using primitive analog computers in combination with feedback, sensors and audio inputs to create a unique sound. Even from the same plan, no two are alike! Participants are encouraged to use found materials for the construction of their personal instrument. The workshop concludes with a group performance and an invitation to the audience to experiment with each of the instruments which have been created. .:::VIDEOS FROM PREVIOUS WORKSHOPS::::. http://www.vimeo.com/album/64426 .:::ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:::. Derek Holzer (1972) is an American sound artist living in Berlin, whose current interests include DIY analog electronics, sound art, field recording and the meeting points of electroacoustic, noise, improv and heavy metal music. He has played live experimental sound as Macumbista or Derek Holzer--as well as taught workshops in Pure Data and electronics--across Europe, North America, Brazil and New Zealand. http://blog.myspace.com/macumbista http://www.vimeo.com/macumbista http://www.umatic.nl/info_derek.html .:::REGISTRATION INFO:::. As a result I discovered the inside of the brand new suburban MFA, Centre Manjefiek Malberg, also home to the Tijdverkijker, an interesting interactive video installation by Dutch artist Geert Mul. At the Rondeel, I admired the inside of the gigantic red hot air balloon, which has become a second, an interior, skin for the ArtSpace, that visiting artists may get under. In between the meeting with old friends, as one might have expected, the evening there brought quite a bit of noise. The noise made me wonder ... it led to some lines on Edd Noi$ and Willy Fistw?ll's performance, and then some more on an heroic attempt by Kim Laugs and Rinus van Alebeek - none though really concerns this or that duo, or such or such group in particular: it addresses the pathetic impotence of 'fringe noise' as a contemporary (bourgeois) practice in general ... TL0741 has a knack for colouring in the same shade of doom song while revealing more and more detail through ever so slowly morphing his effect settings. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=290 review by Derek Morton "Intuitive Music Live in Cologne - Flowers of Now" (review) Recorded live at St. Maternus Church, Cologne, Germany in 2006 Flowers of Now - Intuitive Music Live in Cologne is an album collaboration featuring Luca Formentini (electric guitar), Markus Stockhausen (trumpets), Vera Fischer (flutes), Tara Bouman (clarinets) and Deborah Walker (cello). As a live recording it contains all the signifiers of an environment like this. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=289 review by Roger Mills "Touching the heart of the drone" (review) Chicago-based Haptic is a group of musicians layering drones live, in real time, since 2005. Their music blends into a slowly evolving texture, combining deep resonance with subtle, chaotic percussives, with just enough references to focus attention through the rich, simmering background. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=287 review by Caleb Deupree "Wounded Breath - Erdem Helvacioglu" (review) Wounded Breadth is another immersive sonic experience from one of Turkey's more esteemed sonic sculptors, Erdem Helvacioglu. Where his previous work sounded like heaven's ire, with its processed guitar and a veritable menagerie of blunt yet beautiful electronic textures, Wounded Breadth is a strictly electro-acoustic album of a more aggressive, conceptual bent. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=292 review by Max Schaefer Roger Mills Editor, Furthernoise.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... May 5-9 2009. Coils Magnets Music with Dan Wilson and Chris Weaver Message-ID: Last few places available at the 'Miraculous Agitation' Workshop Coils, Magnets, Music with Dan Wilson and Chris Weaver(UK). Registration by April 15 2009: http://www.aa-vv.org/?av_02010101 Drawing the hidden music out of everyday objects. Coils are the very soul of electronic music. The Victorians made jump, Jimi Hendrix made them howl and this workshop hopes to make them sing. It guides participants in creating and using electro-magnetic forces to create a type of 'acoustically synthesized' music from salvaged metal objects. We will explore how any object can be turned into a loud speaker and how the principal of feedback can make these objects vibrate with sound. The aim of the workshop is to get the participants quickly to the point where they have two adaptable instruments (a cracklebox and essential a DIY ebow to be focused on using these tools to pull out a wide soundscape from discarded objects. Each participant would be an 'island of sound' in the space, surrounded by the junk that they were using for their newly constructed instruments to transform into a harmonic sound environment! Dan Wilson is a composer, instrument builder and sound designer from Hertfordshire with a BA and MA in Sonic Art, whose interests lie primarily in the use of electromagnetic agitation in new instrument design. He is also a keen practitioner and theorist of mediadropping the act of leaving homemade tapes or CDs in public places for people to find. He was awarded the 2007 Arts Foundation electroacoustic composition fellowship (nominated by the Ed Baxter of the LMC) which led to a performance of his electromagnetic work 'Corrosion Suite' at the Tate Modern in June that year. He has been featured in The Wire on numerous occasions, in Unknown Public, in Nic Collins' book 'Handmade Electronic Music', and in the groundbreaking 365 Days Project MP3 series on Ubuweb. He is a performer in the electroacoustic improve quartet Oscillatorial Binnage. Chris Weaver is a composer and experimentalist, laptop and electronics improviser from London. When not manning the helm at London's Resonance104.4FM, he can be found alongside vocalist KJ Grant in their frequent duo and sporadic guest-lead trios. Occasionally he also turns up twanging rubber bands and and playing circuit bent casios in the group, Oscillatory Binnnage. Recreating the Domain is a set of artist-created recorded walking tours of the Domain, the controversial north Austin shopping center/residence/office park. Rather than having a traditional gallery presence, visitors will be able to download the walking tours from and attend the show on their own time, making Recreating the Domain a permanent exhibition. The artists are Bill Bridges, with a piece that deals with corporate speech and (mis)translation. Brent Fariss, with a piece designed to challenge the listener to re-contextualize his environment through increasingly challenging instructions. Christopher Petkus, with an audio tour that maps the steady psychological disintegration of the tour guide. James Patrick Robinson, with a sound collage of life and work in the Domain that dissects where corporate culture meets our daily lives. Vanessa Rossetto, with an audible analysis of the historical use of the land currently known as the Domain. Curator Alex Keller: ?Walking around the Domain brings up so many fascinating questions, it?s difficult to imagine answering them all. * What would it be like to live in a neighborhood with music piped in on the sidewalks? * Are neighborhoods always the product of terraforming? * What would happen if the Domain became a walled city? * What will the Domain look like if the Great Depression mark 2 happens? * What would the Domain look like if it were invaded by zombies? * Are there underground tunnels for cast members like in Disneyworld? * Could I afford to live there if I worked in a store there?? ?The artists have made some incredible pieces that provide a bit more insight into the Domain and what makes it tick. I can?t wait to see sound art aficionados waltzing around the Domain with headphones on, mixing with the crowd of shoppers with headphones on. Will there be a clear division between the listeners and the shoppers? Are they already the same group? Will the listeners be drawn in to the Domain?s type of new urban lifestyle?? Recreating the Domain will open on April 17, 2009, at which point the audio tours will be downloadable from . The show is the subject of a presentation in the Church of the Friendly Ghost's Modern Aural Sculpture Symposium South, a two day event exploring modern creative music in Texas and other southern states, Mexico, and the rest of the world including guest speakers and performers from other places in the states and abroad. Recreating the Domain?s presentation will occur on Saturday, April 25 at 12:00 PM at the Acton School of Business in Austin. _________________________________________ ABOUT THE CHURCH OF THE FRIENDLY GHOST Church of the Friendly Ghost is a growing community organization dedicated to the proliferation of creative musics, future-minded expressions, experiments in sound, and cutting edge jazz. While we place an emphasis on home-grown music (Austin, Texas) we also connect the local audience with new performers and composers and serve as a hub for the creative music community in Austin. Church of the Friendly Ghost serves as a laboratory for creative musicians outside the the limits of institution and industry, as well as a gathering place for the culturally adventurous in Austin, accessible as a social, practical, and artistic network. By providing an alternative to traditional bars and venues, a logistical and promotional network, and serving as a forum for artistic discourse, C.O.T.F.G. nurtures and enables a more diverse range of creative musics, and curates an ongoing series of exciting and thought-provoking musical performances that take place at Salvage Vanguard Theater. These performances accessible to the public, inclusive to the community as a whole, and always offered at an affordable admission. Church Of The Friendly Ghost seeks to raise the profile of creative music in Austin and Texas worldwide. We at Church of the Friendly Ghost believe that Art is a right and a public resource. Thanks for your support and interest! This most recent release features the return of some early veterans of the label as well as recent additions? to the Auricular roster. Auricular Audio Magazine #14 opens with an exclusive sonically organic 17-minute track by reunited Voice of Eye. Jim Wilson and Bonnie McNairn shine like never before on this deeply illuminating shamanic interlude. This is the longest single track ever released on an Auricular Audio Magazine and stands out as one of the brightest to date. ? Long time veteran artist and multimedia contributor to the label, Drew Dobbs, returns with a singularly unique track entitled Gowl, produced specifically for the series. Drew, a past member of Big City Orchestre, Neighborhood Bass Coalition and Chotchke has appeared on past Auricular Audio Magazine volumes and releases as a member of BCO, Rob & Robo, producer and member of The Chambermaidens, member of the Sense/Net collective as well as contributed art and resources to many of the Auricular productions dating back to 1989. Drew had been an integral participant and supporter of the label from its' onset. Giligadi, project of Jason Murry established for mapping, capturing and presenting emotions in a sonic form, returns to Auricular as well. Having begun his efforts in sonic sculpture in 1989, he found his works released as 'Fissures in the Faithful', through Auricular on cassete in 1993. This haunting collection stands solid to this day.? Plans for a re-mastered release of Fissures in late Spring of 2009 are underway. Giligadi has composed a unique and remarkable track for this project entitled 'Scars Throw Blight Like Mars'. Composer Eldad Tsabary creates electroacoustic and instrumental works that are inspired by the concepts of metamorphosis and sound-mass, and often reflect intercultural subjects. His works won prizes and mentions in several international competitions. The profoundly textural piece presented on this compilation, "In memoriam Karlheinz Stockhausen' was a finalist in the Miniaturas Electroacusticas 2008 contest. Microsound composer Barry Dillon provides a track entitled 'Three Voice Ahh' from his previously released CD on Auricular. Dillon utilizes the processing techniques developed in musique concrete, enhanced with the present day developments in Digital Signal Processing, Electronics and Computer Music programming languages like Csound, Max / MSP Formed in 1999, the Israeli project Chaos as Shelter arrived at a point of transformation. Vadim Gusis, its founder, decided to step out of the borders of the dark ambient genre explore other music styles and dimensions. As a result, Thunderwheel was founded. This new exploration is presented in the piece 'Vajra'. Andrez Bergen, a Australian expatriate currently residing in Tokyo, and better known as Little Nobody, shares his piece 'Old Skool Gagsta Slap'. Andrez, straying from his more structured and 'danceable' releases as Little Nobody, slices, cuts and dices his way through his new work and shares this Dada-incised piece from the full-length January 2009 release "Eat Tatoo Dead Tiger: Squalid Cold Tokyo Collectibles" on the Auricular label. ?L was formed in 2006 with members of Argentinian legendary band Reynols and side projects Minexio VII and Virgen Vapor. In May 2005 they played as the band for Japanese singer Damo Suzuki (ex Can) on his first shows in Buenos Aires. ?L explores the timbric posibilities of the electric guitar, combining elements of noise, drone, contemporary, rock, psych, concrete, atonal music and free improvisation with their track 'v v v'. Hovering in a unique singularity between EDM, IDM, Industrial and experimental ambience, Novachild is a solo project utilizing a range of virtual synthesis, found sound, and hardware synthesis. Novachild shares their track 'Chewy Center'. Swedish experimental artist Pythagora also joins this release. Pythagora is an ongoing project for music by Dan Palsson, residing in Malmo, Sweden since almost forever. Rounding out the release is Bureau of Nonstandards with their spastically tweaked yet comforting compositions created on devices such as Furby mods. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The pedestrian reclaims significance, no longer dwarfed by the built environment but sonically activating the presence of space. With "Vacant City Radio", I aimed to create a poetic space for contemplation of urban decay and renewal, of the passage of time, of cycles of rust, rot, and regrowth. I sought to imagine an audible city that is multi-layered: a city described not just by concrete architecture or its remnants but by ephemeral signals converging and dispersing. With "Radio is everywhere in their dreams", the pedestrian explores purely imagined space, where dreamers themselves are radios, and where signals cross with others also lost in uneasy sleep. With both pieces, noise and interference are the subject and the method of creation, where sounds conjure space and resonate with its rupture, its indeterminacy, and its imagined life. /Vacant City Radio/ (2005) /Radio is everywhere in their dreams/ (2003) Thanks to the Western Front Media Arts program, Vancouver, Canada. again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! framework 354 rue de l'andelle 27910 perruel france info at frameworkradio.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------ framework intro submissions: 1) take yourself and a recording device to a location of your choice 2) record for AT LEAST one minute before you - 3) read aloud the following text: *welcome to framework.* *framework is a show consecrated to field recording, and its use in composition. field recording, phonography, the art of sound hunting; open your ears and listen! **/[3b) please also feel free to translate this text into your native tongue!]/* 4) continue your recording for AT LEAST two minutes after you have finished speaking 5) send the recording on any format to the above address, or as an mp3 via email thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ drop a note to info at frameworkradio.net to be added to or removed from this mailing list -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We filled up the back of a mini-van with toys, minitels, dvd players, record players, foam, printers, assorted pieces of metals, skis and much more, all of which, later that evening, we dumped at the Palais ... Also, read about the many letters written to Denise, and the diary of a young Dutch girl that R?bus picked up near a tube station in the very middle of Paris ... Places are limited to 12. This intensive workshop offers hands-on introduction to interactive systems, based on the theremin-sensor technology developed by Andrei Smirnov and based on the same principle as a well known electronic musical instrument the Theremin, invented by Russian inventor Leon Theremin in 1919. The sensors are small and sensitive digital Theremins useful for numerous applications including motion tracking, gestural interfacing, monitoring of small variations of electrical capacitances related to any sorts of conductive materials and media, including metal objects, foil, liquids, water, human body, plants, metal threads, thin plastic films with metallization, all sorts of Christmas stuff etc. As a starting point of the workshop participants will convert their laptops into digital multichannel Theremins to develop further, during the workshop different interactive audio/video installations, motion capturing systems, unusual gestural interfaces, 3D Theremins, digital Terpsitones and other unusual musical instruments. The workshop is oriented on sound and media artists, composers and musicians, who have particular interest in sound art and interactive systems, forgotten history and musical technology in general. The theoretical introductions, which accompany a workshop, give detailed technical overview of sensor technology and construction, basic principles of operation of the theremin based systems, art and music applications, useful concepts and ideas, condensed historical content, mostly related to almost forgotten historical facts. Participants will learn = How to detect different sorts of motion and measure it = How to monitor very small variations of electrical parameters = How to deal with the data acquired = How to integrate these systems into musical performance, dance, video, sound and art installations = How to build multichannel sensor systems based on Arduino microcontrollers = How to program new instruments and perform with them Requirements Each participant should have a computer with an audio input and headphones. All computers and software should be configured and checked in advance (!). Minimal configuration 1. Laptop with PD or MAX/MSP installed 2. Stereo audio input 3. Personal headphones 4. All appropriate cables 5. Appropriate amount of power plugs Useful options Experienced participants interested in development of multichannel theremin-sensor systems should bring multichannel sound cards or Arduino microcontrollers which will be converted into multichannel USB theremins. For those who hate computers and interested in pure analog circuits some breadboards will be very useful. Software Participants should have some skills in PD or MAX/MSP programming. It is also possible to work with any favorite software, oriented on interactive systems development, which allow external control via OSC or MIDI (Supercollider, Isadora etc.). In all cases control data will be provided via MAX/MSP runtime or PD patches from instructor's library. It is important to remember that in many cases the use of extra software will result in significant increase of latency and other possible timing problems. Analog and digital USB sensors for testing, experimenting and performance as well as all appropriate software libraries will be provided by instructor as well as different stuff for antenna construction. ========================================= =Schedule= Day#1 10:00 - 12:00 - Lecture: Introduction to the Theremin Sensors and their applications. 12:00 - 13:00 - questions/break 13:00 - 17:00 - practical workshop Day#2 10:00 - 12:00 - Lecture: Multichannel t-sensor systems: development and programming. 12:00 - 13:00 - questions/break 13:00 - 17:00 - practical workshop. It was a memorable afternoon, that saw a series of six fine examples of (applied) (radio)phonography, produced by R?bus+Kim Joeun, Ga?l Segalen, Emmanuel Mieville, Julie La Rousse, Jean-Philippe Renoult and Seth Cluett. They took us on a sonic roundtrip that started in Paris, Montmartre, led down the river Danube, and through out-of-Europe places like Peru, back - literally ! - into French soil ... Surprisingly few of the artists, though, managed to smile during their presentation. But when they did, that was a happy view ...
