My work is about my life as a person with a disability, I use both humor and seriousness [usually a combination of both] as away of dissecting and examining the world in which both you and I live in. I frequently cite and use history, my personal life and the experiences of others as a means of questioning and re-examining our societies' view point on the concept that is normalcy. Aesthetically most of my work falls under the category of conceptual art, in that the concept of the work comes first and then the aesthetic/type of work comes after I have thought about the work and came to decision on how the idea should be presented. I have been known to construct my work out of many mediums, I feel that this way of making and presenting work/ideas allows me to be more flexible when it comes to the amount of time and space I need to execute a work of art. -- ........................................ http://thanielionlee.com/ http://www.kentuckianaart.org/ http://simplecell.kentuckianaart.org/ From jeremyvanb at yahoo.com Fri Oct 3 01:24:08 2008 From: jeremyvanb at yahoo.com (Jeremy Van Buskirk) Date: Fri, 03 Oct 2008 01:24:08 -0400 Subject: [Microsound-announce] Wired for Sound 2009 - Call for Submissions Message-ID: <48E5AC78.4000205@yahoo.com> Wired for Sound 2009 April 26-27, 2009 Call for Submissions Guidelines The Longy School of Music is pleased to announce the Wired for Sound 2009 electroacoustic music festival. The sonic spectrum on display here slowly builds in complexity at first, with more and more elements layered over a similar low-ringing drone. A slight stylistic shift takes the music to a slightly higher pitch and a more gentle tone for the final two tracks, with buzzes and drones intertwined in a mesmerizingly thick blanket of static. Material in thise series will include Transelectronic Theory, Sphere, Honetol 14, and early RJ Valeo works. This series' focus is on mid '90s Transelectronic Theory works, and features several tracks that were salvaged from media that was expiring. You can hear the casettes that were mangled and eaten as well as their hiss, and even some digital artifacts from the old sony dat machine that has lost it's ability to track properly. These tracks are very personal to me as they served as both an expression and documentation of my inner most emotions, as well as a salve to help manage the emotions that can be, at the least, uncomfortable a times. Those of you who have the time, money and willingness to venture out to Orbis Nex in Oakland this weekend for some live music will be rewarded with some ambitious and challenging sounds and visuals from a diverse array of performing artists. The "IAMINDUST" International Ambient and Industrial music festival has been a full year in planning and will take place on three consecutive nights, October 3-5. Each night features a half dozen or more performers from the SF Bay Area and nether regions as far afield as Germany. Among the genres represented will be dark ambient and industrial (of course), power electronics, darkwave/ethereal, electro-acoustic, experimental, and hybrids of all of these. Many of the participating artists will be performing with an eight-channel 'octophonic' sound system designed by James Goode and Walter Funk, with added video projections by filmmaker/videographer Brian Traylor. This promises to be the most technically and conceptually ambitious Forms Of Things Unknown performance to date: a forty-minute work entitled "Enantiodronia" which utilizes 24 tracks of live-mixed backing material, 48 live-triggered samples, and twelve channels of assorted live acoustic instruments and effects. This piece will make its world premiere on Friday night, October 3, at 9:00 pm, accompanied by a video which the aforementioned Brian Traylor has created specifically for this performance. A brief three-minute excerpt of the FOTU video can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HI8wOsr9wVA (while there have a look and listen to some of the other performing artists from the festival on the IAMINDUST YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/iamindust ) All of this takes place at Orbis Nex (an underground Gothic-themed warehouse space in Oakland CA) on October 3rd, 4th and 5th, starting at 8:00 pm each night. Directions to the venue are here: http://www.vialmagazine.com/breadcrumbs.html (scroll down to bottom of page). If you are taking public transportation, the location is a short walk from the Oakland Coliseum BART station. Advance tickets can be purchased online using PayPal by going to this page: http://www.iamindust.com/tickets.shtml - they're somewhat pricey at $25 a night, due to the extensive variety of performers and the fact that many have traveled far to perform here. Some of these artists seldom perform live and never tour, so this is a rare opportunity to see acts like Troum, Bloodbox and Ethos. Please be advised that if you are hoping to see Forms Of Things Unknown on Friday, you would do well to arrive no later than 9:00 pm so as not to miss my set. Due to the large number of performers (eight in total on Friday night, of which FOTU is the third), programming is on a tight schedule and when it says "Show starts at 8:00" it means 8:00, not 9:30 or 10:00 like most bars and clubs. - http://freewebs.com/brokensleep __________________________________________________________________ Be smarter than spam. I was intrigued by their unique voice and dedication to truly original music, and have been enjoying the recent releases a great deal. This month I am very pleased to announce the release of Tekuchesti, a piece in shuffle time for listeners and improvisers, brand new on CONStANtA: http://constanta-label.ru/product_8.htm The work explores the relationship of the materials of earth, and how such a seemingly rigid planetary object finds itself in fluid motion with the rest of the solar system. Here's an excerpt from the liner notes, you can read the entire thing on my blog at http://sounding.com/blog/?p=164 +-----------------------------------------------+ [...] Tekuchesti represents ?fluidity? in physics, describing instability or fluid states. The piece consists of constructions mostly taken from free electro-acoustic improvisations, first recorded to create large elemental plates of experience, and secondly edited and combined into subdivisions of space. There were no structural or material limitations placed on the recording or editing of the improvisations, they simply happened. [...] +-----------------------------------------------+ For those familiar with the more beat-oriented side of Craque, this is a good opportunity to experience the other end of the spectrum. The shuffle aspect of the work gives it a fresh perspective on the sounds, just like the earth gives us all different perspectives, and changes in unexpected ways when we expect it least. I collected a large sample of field recording and then selected some of the most representative to create the following tracks, which you can hear on www.myspace.com/massissam I have also taken a few pictures of each location where the sounds have been recorded and added them to the page as well. Following is a description of each track. [on myspace you need to raise the volume as the tracks are designed for headphone listening and the volume is intentionally low] This is a bit of trip in some very fines locations in the world, so enjoy it... ------------------------- "private island" explores the combination of day and night sounds in open spaces. It was recorded in my garden in Toronto (day)and outside my house in Northern Italy (night). Sound travels freely with no boundaries. The listener can hear both far away and close by sounds and their humming interaction with the open landscapes. ---------------------------------------------------- "city of angels" is a reflection of life in Bangkok. A city that counts close to 15 million people. A city where spaces and sounds offer a wide array of samples. The track explores the contrast between sound in a very close space (the elevator in my apartment building) and a semiopen space (a small temple on one of Bangkok busiest streets). Despite the opennes of the temple's architecture once inside the temple it is hard to hear the noisy street nearby. ----------------------------------------------------- man made infrastructures interact with mother nature in "acqua". The idea is to experience how infrastructure (buidings and bridges in this case) alter natural sounds. The quiteness of NY streets late at night, rain pouring on a steel bridge in Japan and a sample from BBC program recorded from my hotel TV one night in Kyoto are mixed together. This track also intend to alert the listener to the importance of water and the struggle that some countries face when it comes to drinkable water. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ a combination of high speed, compression, design and the effect of inside-outside that travellers experience while on a train is the basis for "kaisoku-bahn". A deliberate word-play to symbolize the mixing of sound recorded while travelling on the Narita Express train from Tokyo Airport to Tokyo station and the ICE train from Frankfurt to Heidelberg in Germany. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "noise in the machine" is designed to help the lister explore another type of space. The virtual space we inhabit every day through the use of computers, phones and other electronics designed to connect people. Sounds have been recorded from websites and from a computer farm, where a large number of computers are housed. Virtual spaces emit sounds that interact with the real space of the listener and provide another sample of soundcapes that our hears and mind percieve. ------------------------------------------------------------------ The sounds to the extent possible have not been treated or altered. They have been processed through a sampler (NN-XT Advanced Sampler) and with a equalizer (MClass). In one or two cases I added some basic reverb. I hope you enjoy the presentation and I would be glad for any comment you may want to leav on myspace /mp> -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It is a hybrid of exhibition catalogue, book and compact disc; containing photos, texts and soundscapes - three obstinate elements that reciprocally comment on one another. [listen] http://gruenrekorder.de/?page_id=314 [order] http://www.gruenrekorder.de/shop/#Gruen_068 [information] CD (+Book) 20 Tracks (47?19") (500 copies) [notes] The constant humming sound of the city, house walls that we pass by, the snatches of a conversation which we hear on the streets ? fragments, that we are confronted with every day, but to which we nevertheless pay hardly any attention. It is not just the pompous and spectacular view on the city, that forms our relation to it, it is also the seemingly incidental and fragmentary occurence. To seek for those fragments, the german photographer Greta Hoheisel and the sound-artist Norbert Lang stayed in the capital of the new EU country Romania, in Bucharest for almost one year. What they found was a complex urban realm between consumerism and tradition, between turbo-capitalism and religion. The outcome of their continuous striving through the sound- and cityscapes of Bucharest is a multimedia exhibition called ?Bucharest ? fragments in a box? and also ?Bukarest | Bucure?ti ? fragmente?, a hybrid between foto-catalogue, sketchbook and audio-CD. The basis for the book-CD are 20 fieldrecordings that tell about the life in the city: About sudden horn concerts during rush-hour as well as about the rural idyl in the backyards of the city. Each of the 20 chapters in the book is dedicated to one fieldrecording on the CD, consisting of a sketchy text and photographs, showing deserted places around the city. The combination of those three elements generates a city mosaic full of gaps, that needs the pre-text of the observer and listener to be put together. Thus ?Bukarest | Bucure?ti ? fragmente? can be understood as a universal work about urban sound- and cityscapes in the 21st century. An autumnal evening of string sound experiments at Dalston's Cafe Oto.... Date: Thurs. 16th October Line up: THOMAS GARDNER Cello and live electronics composer, Thomas specialises in group interactions, interfaces for digital performance, and evolutionary musicology. His work includes the 'Ouija Board' - a new form musical instrument, based on the analysis of the shadows of a group of people. He also explores the integration of cellistic technique with speech and lip controls over some of the electroacoustic processes and cello sounds. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=suJ9919MoKU http://www.lcc.arts.ac.uk/41660.htm http://lccmpbalanced.mediacitizens.com/index.php?siid=4080 BELA EMERSON Bela Emerson's performances using electric cello & analogue effects are spontaneous, intense, and exhilarating. Sounds are looped, take on lives of their own, bounce off each other... the effect, as anyone who's heard her will testify, is mesmeric. She has performed solo at Supersonic, EXPO, & worldwide Ladyfests, been broadcast on Resonance FM & BBC Radio 3, plus collaborated live with the likes of Tim Exile & Sten Sandell plus film-makers SchMovies & Tereza Buskova. This performance marks the London launch of her new album on BiP_HoP. http://www.cellobela.com http://www.myspace.com/belaemerson MANUELA BARCZEWSKI With 85 bpm, an electric guitar, vocals and electronic elements, Manuela Barczewski's songs simply describe the luxury of melancholy. Her music works like a memory system; it's a sound archive in which Barczewski captures and processes her observations and experiences on everyday life. In 2006 she met Volker Bertelmann aka Hauschka (Fat Cat) in his Studio One in Dusseldorf/Germany where they recorded seven songs. For her live gigs the artist uses a laptop instead of a backing band combined with her voice and electric guitar. http://www.manuelabarczewski.com http://www.myspace.com/manuelabarczewski Doors: 8pm Ticket price: ?6 - Advance booking: http://wegottickets.com/event/36213 VENUE: Cafe OTO 18 - 22 Ashwin street Dalston, London, E8 3DL http://cafeoto.co.uk/programme/Sprawl.shtm# http://www.cafeoto.co.uk info at cafeoto.co.uk ---------------------------------------------------------------- other UPCOMING PERFORMANCES etc ---------------------------------------------------------------- OCT 14 SI-CUT.DB w. (Free event) Life 2.0 is an exploration of words and technology, set in Access Space, Sheffield's open source recycled technology lab. The event features imaginative performances from a range of writers who are either exploring technology in their work, or using it as part of their performance. There will be an improvised poetry soundscape, Skype readings with poets in London, Iceland, and the USA, and a viral text poem for the audience to take part in. Robin Vaughan-Williams, who is organising the event, has put together The Lost Voices, a collective poetry performance in which five voices, disembodied and lost in the machine, discover a new form of corporeality, where they can make friends, design their own avatars, and take off for their dream island. Brian Lewis, editor of Longbarrow Press, presents Edgelands, a multi-channel sound collage based on Matt Clegg's poetry sequence exploring the colonised space between city and countryside. Performance artist Richard Bolam performs World 3.0, a chilling piece about a world where human progress has rendered morality a thing of the past. Jake Harries brings us "spam unplugged" (acoustic, verbatim spam email songs), and in FYI novelist Linda Lee Welch and electronica musician The Only Michael look to find poetry in the everyday and music in the sound of domestic appliances and radio static. More information about Life 2.0 is available from www.zeroquality.net/Life2. "After a series of records with an experimental electronica flair, tours and performances in Europe, 2-3 years working with Reaktor and Max/Msp softwares, Cooptrol (Hernan Gonzalez, Uruguay) presents "Avatar": a set of fractured, corrosively powerful tracks, with a more visceral, less controlled sound design. Hesitation, lap of faith, and affirmation of an ongoing mutation and search are part of a process leading Hernan and all of us involved in creative expression: pure and simple freedom. According to Cooptrol "Avatar is both digital and mystical. The album deals with several stories on the Net, and other (pseudo) scientific curiosities (Nazi UFOs, ancient Hindi ships, the transfinite number, etcetera)". "Avatar" is an invitation to unveil hidden messages, to fall into saturated sounds, to yield to its (re)versions (including a remix by Barcelona based musician Tanox), in a continuous, corrupt, obsessive mantra." Here are the details, and an excerpt: http://www.emfproductions.org/upcoming/commissions1_2l.html More about New York Soundscape: http://www.emfproductions.org/upcoming/overview.html "Threshold" creates its soundscape through a process called cross- filtering, which runs on the Kyma system. In cross-filtering, the tonal characteristics of one sound, called the impulse response, are imposed on another, called the source, so that the end result is a sound that contains only the characteristics common to both. In this case, ambiences recorded in and around New York provide the source, and my guitar playing provides the impulse response. You hear neither directly, but only the result of the interaction between me and my environment. Recording sources and locations: street traffic during a cab ride from 53rd Street to 89th Street; the lobby of the Museum of Modern Art, and a floor buffer in a side gallery; the lobby and galleries of the Guggenheim Museum; a trash compacter in the mid-50s; an air- conditioning compressor in the mid-50s; an industrial document shredder in the mid-80s; Olafur Elliason's New York Waterfall #4 at Pier 35; traffic on the FDR Drive at South Street; nocturnal insects and thunderstorms in Rockland County. In addition, I'll be showing my short film LUX while performing a new live soundtrack consisting of the same NY sound sources used in Threshold, but this time processed with realtime spectral transformations to create a unique new ambience. Those interested may download my original environmental sound source mix here, to do with as you wish: http://www.otownmedia.com/ThresholdSource.mp3 Thanks, and I hope to see you there. It has the objective to explore the sound giving to the sensorial organs not only a passive absorption but a true organic conscience of what the sound provokes interacting with themselves. It is the augmentation of all our senses don't perceive; *to create one physical experience of the intellect...* It is proved that one simple gesture emanates infinite vibrations to the universe... First time seeing his work in person and it was fantastic. Apparently its the US exclusive appearance of his work. http://akronartmuseum.org/exhibitions/details.php?unid=721 Montr?al artist, inventor and musician Jean-Pierre Gauthier brings humor and poetry to his kinetic sculptural installations. This exhibition, the first survey of the award-winning artist's work, will make its exclusive U.S. appearance at the Akron Art Museum. Gauthier ingeniously transforms electrical cable, funnels, pulleys and other industrial and everyday objects into living, moving, singing organisms. His dynamic installations invoke the opposing forces of order and chaos, permanence and fragility. Each work invites the viewer to experience and interact with its visual, sound, and moving parts. Among the works featured in the exhibition is Beats and Butterflies, a spectacular glistening piano that plays when viewers move through the room. Gauthier in fact views all of his materials as instruments. In Rut, motors, wires, microphones, mixing boards and amplifiers are set in motion to create mesmerizing rhythmic and auditory movements. The seemingly jumbled network of conduits is in fact a highly orchestrated mechanism that creates a multi-sensory experience of space and time. Born in 1965 in Matane (Quebec Province), Gauthier has lived and worked in Montr?al since 1986. Jean-Pierre Gauthier: Machines at Play is comprised of artwork made from 2002 to the present. -- Jeremy Bible http://www.experimedia.net http://jeremybible.com http://jbjh.experimedia.net http://myspace.com/jeremybible From kim at anechoicmedia.com Fri Oct 10 15:16:33 2008 From: kim at anechoicmedia.com (Kim Cascone) Date: Fri, 10 Oct 2008 12:16:33 -0700 Subject: [Microsound-announce] Fwd: francisco Lopez at Ear to the Earth 2008 References: <48EF78A8.9020803@emf.org> Message-ID: Begin forwarded message: > Francisco L?pez > > Buildings [New York] > > This evening, October 10, 8pm > Judson Church > 55 Washington Square South > > $15 general admission / $10 students, seniors, and EMF Subscribers > > Purchase a festival pass > $55 festival pass / $45 students, seniors, and EMF Subscribers > http://www.emfproductions.org/upcoming/overview.html > > > Francisco L?pez writes: "All cities have soundmarks, prototypical > sounds that sort of identify the city (although mostly only for its > inhabitants). They need to go to the microsound group and subscribe manually. I?m not sure if Josh Russell?s amplified hamster wheel is also on this second release by S.I.R.S.I.T. - I?m not even sure where to listen for it on S.I.R.S.I.T.?s first release (which putatively does herald such a contraption). What one does hear on this, is drenched in a deep kosmische vibe and frizzled in solar radiation. But far from transporting one to a gravity (gravitas) free zone where anything goes, there is rather the pull and push of many forces at once that marks the highly sensitive interaction going on here. Between the ludicrous (S.I.R.S.I.T being an acronym of Sometimes It Rains Spacemen In Texas) and the luminous, a third, secret pass way, is chosen, bringing a humanly beautiful sound to bloom in an area where most others only reap sand and wind. liner notes by Mark Pauwen ----------------------- SIRSIT | COLORBLIND CYCLE II recorded spring 2008 in Austin, Texas. Her music harnesses many different genres whilst creating noiseworlds which are all her own. Bela?s performances are the stuff of legend: spontaneous, intense, and exhilarating. She builds layers of rhythm and sound from every part of her instrument: sounds are looped, take on lives of their own, bounce off each other...the effect, as anyone who?s heard her will testify, is mesmeric. Bela emerges from the DIY arena with Hespera, her fourth solo release ? the first with BiP_HoP and also the first which comprises self- contained studio tracks of seven minutes and under, recorded by Kris Weston (aka Thrash) & Grantby. Bela is a prolific and well-travelled performer who tours extensively as a headline act in the UK, Europe, and North America; she?s recently also thrilled crowds at Supersonic, Glastonbury, Bestival, and EXPO, as well as at many worldwide Ladyfests. She has also performed numerous live sessions on Resonance FM, BBC Radio 3, Totally Radio, and in Second Life. In addition to her solo work, Bela has collaborated extensively with other musicians ? live with Tim Exile, Sten Sandell, Rhodri Davies, and Same Actor (to name but a few), and in the studio with Gruenrekorder, Net-Lab, and Strings of Consciousness. She?s also worked with film-makers Tereza Buskova & SchMovies and dancer Anushiye Yarnell, plus created many other live soundtracks to film, theatre, and cabaret. Studio & live sessions include four with Lianne Hall for Radio 1?s John Peel, and recordings with British Sea Power, The LoveGods, and Caramel Jack. In his worklog there are no separation between conceptual art and sound making, as any means of expression become part of his general collage work. He is usually performing live on his "homemade acoustic laptops"; wood boxes with tiny sound objects attached inside, and he often invites guests along (Lasse Marhaug and N.U. Unruh among them). He has toured extensively and is present on numerous releases with constellations of the Origami Republika open network, which he has coordinated since 1990. They determine spaces and identities. For years, artists have been using city noises as a material to stage or to question urban space--new territory, however, for most architects and planners within the routines of functional planning procedures. "Tuned City - Between Sound and Space Speculation" searches for a new evaluation of architectural spaces from the perspective of acoustics. This volume presents various positions of architects, artists and theorists to expand the architectural discourse with the dimension of listening. This collection of 12 essays and interviews pulls together contributions by sound artists, architects, media theorists and even a neurologist, offering an overall picture of the multifarious relations between sound and architectural space. Opening up new and refreshing perspectives, the book features several contributions from architects who actively engage with sound. These include Doris Kleilein and Anne Kockelkorn, whose essay "Disconnection" explains why architecture is 'disconnected' from sound and noise, noting that at the most it is required to combat them. The authors go on to argue, quote rightly, that sound artists show a similar lack of interest in architecture: using recording and playback equipment, they create acoustic spaces that exist by virtue of the performance, relegating actual built space to the background. Other architects attempt to bridge the gap between built space and sound: Pascal Amphoux and Gregoire Chelkoff from Cresson, the French Sound Space and Urban Environment Research Centre, present a typology of sonic effects occurring in urban areas, outlining the relationship between these effects--which range from reverberation to immersion or attraction--and architectural space. This typology provides a standardized vocabulary that can be used by psychologists, sociologists or architects dealing with sound, while also reconfiguring our perception of the urban environment. Architectural theorist Susanne Hauser likewise examines the social impact of urban soundscapes, arguing that the functional, unaesthetic structures making up the major part of today's agglomerations are designed to attract neither the eye not the ear. She suggests that this sensory deprivation may well be responsible for the retreat of city dwellers into their own private spaces via technologies such as the iPod, which allows users to select their audio environment. In his writings, the philosopher Peter Sloterdijk has discussed such strategies of selective participation, which can lead the individual to experience the rest of the world as a poison, or at best as a meaningless backdrop. As its subtitle suggests, Tuned City also leaves room for some thought-provoking speculation. Architect Arno Brandlhuber evokes the possibility of modifying the sound of one's living room by adding echo or adjusting the volume. Elsewhere, musician and sound artist Thomas Ankersmit points out that buildings reflect sound but never dialogue with it. Even more intriguingly, architect and sound artist Raviv Ganchrow considers the possibility of a dialogue between the building and the user, in which the architecture is perceived not as a finished product, but as a system that is only complete when it is listened to as well as looked at. At a time when sound is becoming increasingly controllable, directional and 'material', these ideas open up new perspectives for architecture that are not as utopian as they may appear. Sound engineer Barry Blesser's essay on aural spatiality comes across as simplistic and self-evident alongside the exhaustive typology developed by the Cresson team, while an article or two charting the theoretical underpinnings and historical background of the arguments put forward in these contributions would not have gone amiss. These are minor quibbles, however; as an indicator of sound's undeniable capacity to influence architectural practice and a plea for greater openmindedness on the part of architects, Tuned City makes for essential reading. -- derek holzer ::: http://www.umatic.nl ::: http://blog.myspace.com/macumbista ---Oblique Strategy # 140: "Reverse" From jef at econtact.ca Sun Oct 19 10:00:11 2008 From: jef at econtact.ca (CEC jef chippewa) Date: Sun, 19 Oct 2008 16:00:11 +0200 Subject: [Microsound-announce] JTTP 2008 Top 5 in SOUNDplay: Future EA [22 oct] Message-ID: An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Geometer seeks writers of all disciplines interested in articulating their speciality for a broad but intelligent audience. We welcome historians interrogating the forgotten or obscured, biologists and neuroscientists with an eye for the cultural ramifications of their fields, architects and planners, geologists, musicians, film makers and artists of all kinds. Our aim is to create a place for cultural and intellectual life outside of academia, outside of the commercial, and outside of the ever-proliferating range of narrow specialisations in the arts and sciences. Named for the geometer moth* whose caterpillar, lacking the means to crawl appears to measure the world by the iterations of its forward movement, we take our direction from our namesake and from the many other associations of our name. We value subjective precision, earthbound ambition, and an empiricism grounded in the surfaces of contact between ourselves and the world. Current and forthcoming articles include: - James Byrne (editor of The Wolf) talks about the state of contemporary poetry in Britain and beyond - Glenn Gould and the Idea of North - Peter Philpot profiles the poet Paul Holman - Zero Sum: How We Came to Distrust the Modern - 'Tears in a Monsoon': Lil Wayne, Girl Talk and the Paradox of Choice - A profile of musician, producer and sound artist Will Turner Duffin Geometer invites submissions of critical essays as well as creative pieces. Send an outline of your idea to *editors at geometer.org.uk* Geometer is an independent and non-commercial enterprise. **Over 300 varieties of geometer moth occur in the British Isles, 26,000 worldwide. The family name geometer, meaning literally 'earth-measurer', refers to the method of locomotion of its caterpillars, which lack the means to crawl. Instead the geometer caterpillar grasps the ground ahead with its forelegs, and by drawing up its hind end and arching its body, grips an adjacent point with its hind legs before propelling itself forward, reaching out to clasp a more distant point. In this way it appears that the caterpillar measures the earth by iterations of this same movement, using the length of its own body as its basic unit of measurement.* Geometer invites submissions of creative work and essays. Nicolas Bourriaud, the director of the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, and curator of the fourth Tate Triennal to be held in 2009 at the London Tate Gallery, stated that artists are looking for a new modernity, based on translation. What matters, he says, is to translate the cultural values of cultural groups, and connect them to the global network ... For this new modernity, that will mark the end of postmodernism, Bourriaud coined the term 'altermodern' : it describes art made in today's global context, which is a reaction agains standardisation and commercialism. In "Monkey business" the four post-musicians of ETC. herald the death of postmodernism and the subsequent transition of today's art into a new altermodern era, in an exclusive freely improvised - and instantaneously translated - acoustic performance near and for the group of baboons that are living on the Zoo's monkey rock ... This is the announcement of a new online project created by mediateletipos.net that we just have launched. It was commissioned by the festival Sensxperiment, held these days in Lucena-C?rdoba (Spain). Its content is mainly aimed to the Spanish speaker community, but the info pages are bilingual and there is an automatic translator for the posts installed on the site. In addition, it contains a call for collaboration for a database of resources we are elaborating (by now focused on Latin America-Portugal-Spain areas), therefore we will be grateful for the diffusion of this info to anybody potentially interested. http://www.mediateletipos-retrospecta.net/ ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************** ../mediateletipos-retrospecta.net ))) is a project by mediateletipos on the occasion of Sensxperiment, held in Lucena and C?rdoba (Spain) in October 2008. This edition is entitled Retrospecta and its leitmotif is to review symbolically the last ten years of artistic creation in Spain, paying special attention to sound art, one main interest of the festival during its trajectory. Therefore, Sensxperiment has invited other festivals and projects to include several proposals of their election, that together conform this year?s programme. Following the invitation to participate, we decided to create an archive with all the news related to the Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American scenes published on mediateletipos. Therefore, it has been launched a new web containing all those posts (about two thousand, approximately half of the published total until now). This material has been reviewed and classified into several categories, with the addition of many descriptive tags that simplify and enhance its navigation. Besides using this opportunity to look back, we want to carry on working with our ears in the future. From that intention arises what constitutes the second part of this project: a list of resources related to sound that gathers information already appeared on the web (bibliography, forums, collectives, radio, festivals, institutions, schools, labels, publications, etc.). At present, this section is hosted in this site and will be developed during next year with a regular expansion of the list. Furthermore, a call for collaboration has been launched, through which we hope to receive new references to add and so, with the participation of all, increase its comprehensiveness, diversity and public utility. We would like that this list of resources were the germ of an online database, dynamic and navigable, with specific information about each element, which would be included in future versions of the community artesonoro.org. With this line of work we intend to continue the task already started by research and diffusion projects like the web Arte Sonoro edited at the Fine Arts University of Cuenca (Spain); the Sonoscop?s sound art archive; the newsletters and forums hosted at modisti.com; the international project [un]common sounds; or the book La mosca tras la oreja. De la m?sica experimental al Arte Sonoro by Lloren? Barber and Montserrat Palacios, that will be released also in this edition of the festival. All of them initiatives, that together with others, have been spreading the sonorous phenomena in Spain, Portugal and Latin America. She uses multi-faceted composition to explore the physicality of language(voice) and ideas revolving body, text and power. Her work focuses on the pleasures and difficulties of living within language, and within that language, living within the body. The recuring abscense of bodies, and the re-writings/tellings of narrative structures places her work as a physical link between the medium; the computer, the speaker, and the viewer. partnerships: Konstkonsulent L?nskulturen J?mtlands, J?mtlands l?ns landsting, Konstkonsulent V?sternorrland, Landstinget i V?sternorrland, H?rke konstcentrum Affiliated with Upgrade! In the 2008 version of this performance tour, two sound practitioners (Budhaditya Chattopadhyay & Lasse-Marc Riek) from different landscapes, but with a common fascination for discreet environmental sounds, join together to form an onstage presence exploring different types of performance spaces in four different European cities. The focus of these performances is basically to share listening experience with diverse tools and methods, but fundamentally with the ear. Sounds will be organised in multi-channel atmosphere, within an ambience of empathetic listening to the minute and fragile sound objects from our very own environment. 29.10.08 Berlin/Germany: Tee und Kunsthaus Tschaikowsky http://www.tee-kunsthaus.de/program.shtml 30.10.08 Dresden/Germany: 7.stock http://stock7.de/ 31.10.08 Hamburg/Germany: H?rbar http://www.hoerbar-ev.de/?N%E4chstes_Konzert 07.11.08 Arhus/Denmark: CAVI http://www.cavi.dk/performancelab.php About: Budhaditya Chattopadhyay Budhaditya Chattopadhyay is an audio practitioner; he works with field recording/ phonography, sound design and new media; also involved with restoration, digital archiving and preservation of sound; his sound-works involve found sound collected at deep and cognitive listening of environment followed by digital manipulation and audio engineering; work with sound generally focuses on audio essays, sound narratives and mixed-media installations within an open framework of new media art; addresses issues like sound and environment, sound memory, acoustic ecology and lost/endangered sounds; in a specific context his sound practice is intended to reflect on defined space/place/locale/area as sonic constructs. http://www.myspace.com/budhaditya About: Lasse-Marc Riek The work of Lasse-Marc Riek is an assemblage of the most diverse styles and techniques. Tomoroh Hidari Live in Vienna at quebra duro 2. Also Spoke Zerothruster 12? out now on Record Label Records 3. Alien Audio Absurdities now a web-release 4. Luxury Yacht 1. I will play live in Vienna on 7.11.09 at venster99 quebra duro 07.11.08 21h Venster99: Line-up: (live) Reverse Tunes Strang Tomoroh Hidari Invitriol (dj) M?ser Assimilatah 2. Also Spoke Zerothruster: I have a new 12? out on Record Label Records (actually my first 12?, so finally you can vinyl me). Here?s what could be written about it: Straight from the Court of the Nihilist Jester comes Also Spoke Zerothruster, Tomoroh Hidari's 1st conveniently Disco-compatible 12" on Record Label Records. Whereas his previous releases like "The Necrophonicon" (Isolate, 2004) or the electro-acoustic "13 Objects" (Bruit, 2007), took a closed-concept approach, this record highlights Tomoroh Hidari's versatility of styles, in a collection of dj-friendly, dancefloor orientated tracks - with the exception of the last track, Who Shot the Jazz-Drummer?With his Background of classical music education and a love for extreme and obscure music he discovered in his teenage years, Tomoroh Hidari aka Oliver Stummer has gone electronic in the late nineties. And boy are we glad he did! Hidari?s electronic music is indescribable, pulling pieces from academia, breakcore, glitch, ebm, and musique concrete, Also Spoke Zerothruster runs the gamet of experimental electronic music The 12" comes in a brown.natural papersleeve, each including a numbered, unique handmade Rohrschach picture. These will be in black ink for the first 300 and green Ink for a later patch of 100. You can prelisten, read review(s) and find your way to order here: http://www.recordlabelrecords.org/rlr09.html Two tracks also up for listening at http://www.myspace.com/tomorohhidari 3. Alien Audio Absurdities was the title of a demo I sent out in 2001, which somehow leaked to the net in crappy 128bitrate form. To counteract I made it available on my own website in high-resolution for a while. With Record Label Records starting to do their free-Monday download series, I asked Robbie if he wanted to give it a proper digital re-release, and he did. The album could be described as punky digital dub-aberations and deconstructed break-bewilderrment .. You can grab it here: http://www.recordlabelrecords.org/rlr666.html Thank you, Tomo?roh ?hi/dar~i 4. Luxury Yacht It?s Spelled Luxury Yacht, but it?s pronounced ?Throatwobbler Mangrove? (MPFC) ?~?
