synken outtakes
Message-ID: <490CB297.2030505@adozen.org>
hello list,
adozen.org :: netaudio is really proud to release 24 tracks of beautiful
electronic intensity by the legendary chris douglas as o.s.t.:
54 minutes sharp of his trademark haunting music -like auditory
savourings of the multimedia atmospheres developed in synken.
these outtakes are a small selection of the over 600 songs/pieces
composed for the project synken, a collective creative experience by
transforma (video) and o.s.t. (music). most of the tracks here are
played on instruments (piano, organ, melodian, melodica, harmonica,
vibraphone, guitars, zitars) then processed with either analog or
digital effects.
after starting anew last year with the synken project, including the dvd
production and touring through europe, chris douglas makes a shift in
his production in 2008. two brand new albums are already available:
waetka (as o.s.t.) on ideal recordings from sweden and ideom (as
daglish, his more "protorhythmic" guise) on record labels records. and
there is more to come -chris douglas is back!
best,
marc

we've always been a sucker for those little 3-inch cds, and this week we
heard a pile of them, all from the french cdr label *taalem*. some
familiar names (*jgrzinich*, *spiracle*, *emmanuel mieville*, *christian
renou* - aka *brume*) and several new ones (at least to me - *yui
ondera*, *goose*, *hum*) weaved together in what become quite a thick
tapestry for a chilly autumn.
and, my occasional plea: intros, people! i need intros!
again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw
field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction

our guest curated series. send proposals or material, released or not,

Hamburger Klangwerktage | Contemptronics
2008, November 24th ?30th in Hamburg, Germany
Kampnagel Internationale Kulturfabrik GmbH, Jarrestra?e 20, 22303
Hamburg
From the 24th ? 30th November 2008 the music festival ?Hamburger
Klangwerktage? will celebrate its 3rd anniversary at the
International Kulturfabrik Kampnagel. This years festival motto is
CONTEMPTRONICS, which comprises the three terms CONTEMPORARY ?
TEMPTATION ? ELECTRONICS.
Don?t miss out on an interactive workshop with the composer and
soundartist Kim Cascone in cooperation with the Second Life-Community
Avatar Orchestra Metaverse.
Virtual playtime
with Kim Cascone and Shintaro Miyazaki
This workshop on a new form of digital aesthetic is led by the
legendary composer and sound designer Kim Cascone and the founder of
the Avatar Orchestra Metaverse, Shintaro Miyazaki. What happens if
you fuse a variety of different sounds and merge them into one? New
sounds emerge by chance, are discarded or reconverted until a truly
unique and state of the art piece of music is formed. This music will
literally and in the original sense of the word ?composed? be ?put
together?.
The focus of this workshop is on the practical work with sound files
and the numerous ways to experiment and operate with these files
through the tool of the Avatar Orchestra Metaverse. The latter exists
solely online in the MassiveMultiUserGame Second Life. Shintaro
Miyazaki aka Maximilian Nakamura will train the participants so they
are qualified to become a full member of the orchestra.
By the end of the week all participants will get the chance to
perform their compositions together with the Avatar Orchestra
Metaverse live on stage at the CAMPUS in Concert on November 29th.
Participants only need to bring a laptop, with some open source audio
software tools and a web browser installed. Basic knowledge of the
computer game Second Life is advantageous. The workshop takes place
in English and German and is limited to 12 participants.
Registration fee: 25,- Euro

Subject: [Microsound-announce] living daylight savings time
Message-ID: <3f2bbf320811032048p517150c7p3ada2d9fdcd9c083@mail.gmail.com>
Dear friends,
I'm pleased to announce the release of a new mp3 work entitled
"Living Daylight Savings Time"
Download it here:
http://www.insidesmusic.com/insidesmusic/daylightsavings.html
Composed entirely of field recordings made across the United States, "Living
Daylight Savings Time" unfolds as a long-form piece epic in scope yet
intimate in detail. The work explores subtle yet radical audio
transformations, juxtapositions, and transitions over long periods of time,
patiently emerging over about 50 minutes.
The start of the piece plunges the listener into a darkness that gradually
reveals itself as the hustle and bustle of a food court in NYC's LaGuardia
Airport. Lawn sprinklers, sea lions, windblown leaves, and a variety of
public spaces (the New York Public Library, the midway of the Minnesota
State Fair, the interior of an airplane at 30,000 feet) materialize and
coalesce, eventually dissolving or unraveling into digital oblivion. The
resulting dream logic explores a new wilderness humankind has carved out of
the old one.
This recording is available for free download here:
http://www.insidesmusic.com/insidesmusic/daylightsavings.html
Headphones recommended. Enjoy!

Experimedia (one of textura.org 's top 10 labels of 2008) invites
artists to submit sound pieces to a free netlabel compilation
celebrating the election of Barack Obama. All pieces considered for
the compilation should be comprised of the voice of Obama and crowds
from any of his speeches. Will get more organized details later after
I catch up on some work I put aside while volunteering.
Send links to submissions to info at experimedia.net with subject 'YES WE CAN'.

Here are some sound sources appropriate for this project including
speeches given by Obama at the Democratic National Conventions in 2004
and 2008. His now famous "A More Perfect Union" speech and his
"Victory Speech". There also various field recordings from victory
walks in NY, Chicago, and Seattle so far. Will add more recordings as
I acquire them.

developing for the past 10 years.
The venue: The Energy Museum is housed in the old Silahtaraga Power
Plant, which was salvaged then renovated by the Turkish government in
2007 and is now a center for education and the arts. It is also an
amazing space to hear electronic music in; surrounded by hulking
rusted dynamos, huge levers and switches, glass dials the atmosphere

The decor is one part mad scientists laboratory and one part David
Lynch meets the boiler room of a Russian battleship -- this is an

http://gallery.kentuckianaart.org/about.html
The KAO gallery is an online gallery that specializes in promoting
artist from the kentuckiana area.
We believe that one way of allowing people from outside of the ohio
valley area to see art from this region is to use the internet to
promote artist from the area. Since we lack the bills and logistical
complications of brick and mortar galleries we can give the artist a
much higher cut of the sales that are generated, plus we can take more
risks and show harder to sell web and conceptual based works.
Group show number one - Out Of Nothing
We are currently seeking artist who make work involving and/or is
about the use of both visual or sonic nothingness. We are greatly
interested in negative space and its use as a metaphor for all things
hidden and ignored. the opening date for the show will be January 1st
2009, and we are seeking atleast twelve artists from in or around the
ohio valley area. the show will run for 30 days. the entry fee for the
show is four dollars, and all money collected from entry fees will be
used to promote the show.
send six images/examples of your work to thanielionlee at gmail.com

Message-ID: <5a9dc0d60811120838s6092c2dbqdc79db2ffee4e7e3@mail.gmail.com>
These two new compilations (my top picks of the week) from two new
labels are absolutely fantastic and they play great back to back. You
will find many of the same artists on both of these
compilations...with both the label founders, ryonkt and segue, being
on each other's compilations along many other major players on current
ambient scene including celer, chubby wolf, cloudburst, corey fuller,
crossroads ego, elian, entia non, glenn ryszko, ian hawgood, ijo,
offthesky, pawn, porzellan, russel garden, shunji takami, son of rose.
Its interesting to see how the modern ambient scene is coming
together with many of these artists releasing on the same labels such
as Resting Bell, Infraction, Dragon's Eye, Data Obscura, and
Experimedia. A great little family of artists coming together and
crossing over.
various artists - sounds of slow flow vol1 - From Ryonkt's new label
Slow Flow Rec out of Sapporo, Japan.
various artists - listen - From Segue's new label out of Washington D.C.
//
And here a few other fantastic new titles.
eluder - the most beautiful blue - from the Infraction label probably
the leading label of the current ambient scene...and just across town
from Experimedia headquarters. I was excited to find both of us, two
labels from little Canton, Ohio on Textura.org's 10 favorite labels of
2008 list.
steinbr?chel - home - another beautiful piece of work from
steinbr?chel on the Slaapwel label with some wonderfull packaging (a
small cardboard box with stitched on artwork)
amplifier machine - her mouth is an outlaw - new release on 12k
taylor deupree & kenneth kirschner - may - brand new from Room40
tujiko noriko, lawrence english & john chantler - u - another new
release from Room40
lawrence english - kiri no oto - Lawrence English's fantastic album on Touch.
richard garet - l'avenir - Really enjoying the work of Richard Garet
and the Winds Measure label is a recent discovery that has just blown
me away and great packaging. (Lawrence English has another really
great album on Winds Measure as well)

Patrick McGinley's work concentrates on the framing of sounds from our
environment which normally pass through our ears unnoticed and
unremarked, but which out of context become unrecognisable, alien and
extraordinary: crackling charcoal, a squeaking escalator, a buzzing
insect, or one's own breath. He also co-directs framework, an
organisation that produces a weekly radio show on London's

There Rinus van Alebeek wrote aradio memory on Brandon Labelle's white tablecloth, and we embarked uponthe long march back down to the Weserstrasse ...The first stage of that journey led us to food ;the second one to music ;with its third stage we came to knowledge, as we arrived at Udo Noll's place, who was just about to test his upcoming presentation of the radio aporeesoundmaps, played back by someone going around with a GPS enabled cellphone ...Thus we listened to the many sonic ghosts that were lurking in Udo'sneighborhood, while he shared with us his passion for maps and the historyof surveying ...[ permalink: http://www.harsmedia.com/SoundBlog/Archief/00651.php ]--** have a great day!__ Harold Schellinx=====================================* Be an Angel !__ Guard the SoundBlog !__==== http://angelsponsor.soundblog.net=====================================

Shut up and Listen! 2008
Interdisciplinary Festival for Music and Sound Art, Vienna, Nov.20.21.2008
small ? silent ? lowercase
The interdisciplinary festival 'Shut up and Listen!' enters 2008 into its
third season. After 'hoerspiel, radio art and acusmatic music' in 2006, and
'soundscape - field recording - phonography' in 2007, this year's focus is
'small - silent - lowercase'. We'd like to concentrate on 'small sounds',
on music and sound art projects that work with reduced means,
and often take place at the threshold of perception.
Once again, our motto is: Let?s shut up and listen!

NEW RELEASE !!!!
GUNTER ADLER
Douches Dames
3"CDR, (21:32 min)
?Douches Dames was part of an ancient indoor swimming pool in
Forest/Brussels. Today this elegant Art Nouveau building hosts the eclectic
art laboratory Bains::Connective. The music, originally intended as a sound
installation, is an amalgam made of field recordings from inside the
building, antique heptatonic scales and synthetically produced sounds spread
out painstakingly in the first movement, infinitely transposed downwards in
the second (Shepard Tones) and finally hidden inside a shady atmosphere in
the third, where another stimulating motif is aperiodically interrupted by
sudden violent curves. In addition Gunter Adler has compiled a jumbled array
of electroacoustic samples forming a zigzagged rather than streamlined path
through his archives. During the roaring times, after the melting of the
polar caps had begun, visual artist Isabelle Rouquette showed works on this
theme from a diversity of sources and engraved them into the trapezoidal
patterned floor of the pool. On the day of the opening the interior was
illuminated by flowing zebra skin light projections while the music was
presented in a sort of live performance, a soundtrack accompanied by a
sweeping improvisation on a synthesizer and twiddling with delay effects. It
has an opulent and festive character and is at home in both ancient and
modern contexts.?

About the Artist:
Born and raised in Aachen, Germany. At the age of 17 he starts
experimentating with synthetically produced sounds (Commodore 64, all data
lost). Moves to Hamburg, Germany in order to study physics, philosophy,
music theory. From 1992 to 96 works under the nome de plume ANUBIS (see
Stora Compilation from 1993). Works out his first sound installations and in
1998 co-founds the GROENLAND ORCHESTER with G.Reznicek.
Invents his alter ego GUNTER ADLER and releases his solo debut on Staubgold.
Additionally works on animation film and film scores. Toured continuosly
with Groenland Orchester and Gunter Adler and teams up in the duo-improv
group AUGSBURGER TAFELCONFECT with Sebastian Reier since 2002. The same year
he releases a split album with Klangkrieg, again on Staubgold. Following up
to this his next record Minutemusic is released by the polish Mik.Musik
label [run by Wojt3k from Retro*Sex*Galaxy] in 2003. Since October 2003 he
is running a net label for exquisite electronic music: plakatif.net

Hello friends,
Wandering Ear is proud to announce the release of Ernst Karel's "Outside
Laboratories at Night", available now for free mp3 download at
http://wanderingear.com
Karel performed this piece live at AS220 in Providence RI on May 26, 2007,
using modular analog electronics and location recordings made outside
research laboratory buildings at night on the campus of Harvard University.
Electronic synthesis and acoustic environments coalesce gradually at some
points; elsewhere, they reveal themselves by peeling layers away.
Donwload it free here: http://wanderingear.com
And enjoy the other free releases available on the site as well.
Wandering Ear is a net label co-curated by Nathan Larson (Minneapolis MN)
and Mike Hallenbeck (Portland OR), specializing in the release of audio
related to field recording. Featured material ranges from "straight" field
recordings to music, installation audio, video and other media that somehow
integrates such recordings.
Enjoy!
Best,
Mike

hi
this message confirms that the address
'microsound-announce at microsound.org' works for this mailing address.
some of you may have used an address with 'nexthop' in it. you should
probably update your address books to use the '@microsound.org' address.
it should be easier to remember.
you can still use 'microsound-announce at or8.net' too.

After more than ten CDs and several vinyls under different aliases,
projects or collaborations that ranged a multitude of musical styles
over the last 15 years, Pure?s newest release is now proudly presented
by Cr?nica.
Three and a half years later than scheduled, and six years after his
previous studio CD release ?Noonbugs? on Mego, Pure returns with his
fourth solo full-length album ? ?Ification? ? the outcome of a long
period of live work (documented in the first two volumes of the ?Home Is
Where My Harddisk is? series), residencies ? in France, with Johnny
Dekam, where the ?Reqoil Displaced Peaceoff? DVD was produced ? and
collaborations ? the ?Heart Chamber Orchestra? with Erich Berger, an
audio-visual performance based on the heart-beats of an orchestra of 12
musicians.
?Ification? presents a collection of seven highly diverse tracks that
revolve around dense, filmic and eerie atmospheres, without ever
drifting into obvious or simple harmonies. As in his previous work, Pure
takes from music history whatever serves his narrative needs and
appropriates it through his very own sound-mangling strategies.
Complementing this approach, here, and for the first time in his work,
there is a very tight integration of various instrumentalists, whose
recordings ? produced for this CD ? are often the compositional base of
the tracks.
The intro FIRE is a short statement based on a guitar recording of
Christoph de Babalon (Digital Hardcore artist and owner of the label
Cross Fade Enter Tainment) freed from all flesh with only the bare-bones
left.
AFTER THE BOMB is a long, gentle, deep meditation on the nature of
low-frequency sounds with tiny melodies and subtle percussion sliding in
at the end.
With APPROXIMATION Pure enters new fields with a simultaneous minimal
and bombastic track built around what reminds high string instruments,
low horns, and sparse percussion giving the track a classical touch.
NIGHT FLIGHT is an epic, slow-changing drone piece that glides through
time like a car by the night on an endlessly straight road.
SONOMATOPEIA melts a composition of isolationist sounds with vocal
experiments of female metal singer Alexandra von Bolzn going from silent
whispers to bursts of aggression that out-power power electronics? voices.
END takes the longest time to develop. In almost 16 minutes it travels
from an eerie space filled with echoes of percussions and cymbals
through a tunnel of static distortions of bass played by sound artist
Anke Eckardt.
Closing the album, METAL SKY introduces one more surprise. Built around
drums played by Martin Brandlmayr (drummer of austrian band Radian who
also provided the percussion on AFTER THE BOMB) like only he can play
them and another appearance of Alexandra von Bolzn the last track starts
off with held-back heaviness decreasing to a standstill and ends in a
melancholic, noisy rock-like piece.
?Ification? was written, recorded and mixed by Pure, mastered by Martin
Siewert at Motone Sound Services, in Vienna, and its cover art was
specially created by Jan Rohlf.

'Noiseforest' (homage to David Tudor)
Noise Forest uses amplification of small sounds through contact mics,
live processing, electronics, and live performance on found
objects. Percussionist Brendan Dougherty abandons the standard
drumkit for a collection of junk and amplified objects which are
processed / mixes / manipulated digitally (by Kim Cascone - using MAX/
MSP) and electronically (by Guido Henneb?hl (using cracked + homemade
electronis / primitive machines). Inspired by David Tudor's
Rainforest installation.
performances on Friday, Nov 21 at 8pm
Saturday, Nov 22 from 3pm on (including special guests)
+ Record release of Smoke on Devil's Mountain by KGB trio on Scrapple
Records (scrapplerecords.com). limited edition CD release (100
copies) + online distribution.
On a wet, rainy day in November the trio treks into the woods of
Teufelsberg, Berlin, and breaks into the abandoned station in order
to take some field recordings. Traversing the dank, dark interior of
the complex they make their way all the way to the large set of domes
atop the buildings. The wind whipping at the torn skins of the
geodesic domes. It begins to rain. The trio gets to work, recording
the wind and rain through the domes as well as using the domes
acoustic properties to process sounds made with hand held cracked
electronics. Later in the KGB studio the trio work at processing and
layering the dome recordings with live improvisations inspired by the
dome recordings. The result it a disjointed temporal documentation of
the morphogentic field recordings of a Cold War spy station.
KGB trio info:
Founded in 2004, KGB makes music using digital, electrical and
acoustic instruments, creating music incorporating field recordings
and processing, and performs as a trio and with an orchestra of
improvising musicians. The Swiss Pharmaceuticals CD was released in
2005 on Utech records. Henneb?hl and Dougherty have been working
together in various Berlin experimental/noise outfits (Idiot Switch,
Oktoschloks, Control, "Wendel Collective"), and perform with Cascone
as KGB whenever Kim comes to Europe. The group has played venues
across Europe including Instants Chavirez (Paris), FIM (Basel),
Ausland (Berlin) and SKOP (Frankfurt).
Kim Cascone founded silent records in 1985 and has released more than
15 albums of electronic music, working/performing with Merzbow,Keith
Rehberg, Oval, Scanner, Carsten Nicolai, Doug Aitken, and David Toop
among others. Cascone was one of the co-founders of the microsound
list and writes for Computer Music Journal and Artbyte Magazine.
Guido Henneb?hl builds and performs on his own analogue and
electronic instruments. He has performed across Europe with artists
such as Travis Just, Alwynne Pritchard and works in the groups Idiot
Switch and the Oktoschlocks.
Brendan Dougherty was born in Philadelphia and has been located in
Berlin since 2002. He works as a composer and performer in the areas
of improvised music, jazz, and collaborates often with Dance and
Theater Productions. He has worked with the likes of Jeremy Wade,
Billy Bang, Aleks Kolkowski, Jon Rose.

Subject: [microsound-announce] Next we take Berlin: RjDj sprints again on
Dec 12-14
Message-ID: <20081119195440.GI3859@fliwatut.scifi>
Hi all,
December is the time for the next RjDj sprint: The Reality Jockeys
would like to invite you to the Scene composing session on 12-14
December 2008 in Berlin at this nice location:
moviepilot
Bluecherstra?e 22
10961 Berlin (Kreuzberg)
The action starts on Friday, 12.12. at 12 am and spans the whole
weekend. We'll post further details/timetable etc. briefly before the
actual sprint happens.
What is a RjDj sprint?
----------------------
RjDj sprints bring together musicians and artists interested in
working on reactive, algorithmic music ("Scenes") for mobile devices
and do other mad things with sound. Currently supported devices are
the iPhone and in an yet unreleased version the iPod Touch.
The goal is to create, test and enjoy many new scenes for the RjDj
application. We know that many musicians don't have iPhones, so we
will provide some devices for development during the sprint. Prior
sprints happened in Bizau, Barcelona and Vienna. Check out
http://rjdj.me/sprints to see how much fun we generally spread!
Attending the sprint is free, but we kindly ask you to register on our
website: http://rjdj.me or via info at rjdj.me
Please forward this invitation to anyone you think might be
interested.
Keep it real,

"The Birth of Primary Cinema from the Spirit of Sound - Feature
Article by Frank Rothkamm" (feature)
Primary Cinema remains cinema, it is not painting or staged
photography. It is comprehended as a sequence of images with sound
which ultimately constructs its meaning. It de-emphasizes change and
reduces bright-ness and distributes events on a galactic scale, but
despite its apparent emptiness it remains true cinema as the marriage
of projected images and sound in space and time.
http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=273
feature by Frank Rothkamm
"The Gyres, Between Nowhere and Goodbye, The End of
Everything" (feature)
Cathal Rodgers moonlights from his grubby guitarings with Irish doom-
mongers Wreck Of The Hesperus as Wereju. Moonlight is apposite in
application to Wereju, less evil more eerie twin, drawing out long
rays of wild half-lit nightshade shimmer over grey evacuated fields, a
sound described by the artist as "ageless drifting melancholia of an
abandoned planet".

feature by Alan Lockett
"A Ritual Which is Incomprehensible (to the smile of Pauline Oliveros)
- Claudio Parodi" (review)
The second in an ongoing series of conceptual works by Claudio Parodi
sourcing and manipulating music from Tiziano Milano's Suoni CD (2005),
not so much to remix but as staple material for processing in the
studio. This time as with the last, the album is dedicated to a well
known sound artist, and Pauline Oliveros is the chosen one on this
occasion.

"Bedside Stories - Taub" (review)
Bedside Stories is the new release by Taub, aka Me Raabenstein and
Harold Nono. It is a work of haunting sonic landscapes and fragmented
realities, glued together with precision and beauty. It will lull you
into worlds of spacious minimal sounsdcapes and sonic cinematic
journeys, which constantly resolve back to a single sound event or
just quiet.

"Document 2 - Sevenhourgerm" (review)
Document 2 by Sevenhourgerm aka Matthew Atkins is a CDR including nine
experimental tracks released on the Minimal Resource Manipulation
label. Found sounds and noise are crafted into varying degrees of
coherency, with rhythm and melody flirting at the edge of perception.

"Electronic Drifting: The Music of Richard Lainhart" (review)
Many contemporary musicians take their inspiration from natural
processes. Richard Lainhart's musical models come from clouds, flames
and waves, whose nebulous and ever shifting formations are the
catalyst for his beautiful electronic works.

review by Caleb Deupree
"Imperfect Silence - Various" (review)
Imperfect Silence is a radical collaboration between artists working
together purely online. Global boundaries and cultural differences
make way for free jazz and diverse sonic improvisation, as Phil
Hargreaves edits together the material to provide a personal narrative
of Cadavre Esquis.
http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=275
review by Alex Young
"Italian Noise Label Dokura Serves up 3 Mini Cdrs" (review)
Dokura is an Italian noise label that releases limited edition tapes,
3 inch CDRs and the occasional vinyl lp from a variety of
international artists. With 10 releases to date, the little label
seems to be aiming at noise of the instrumental variety swinging
closer to the lo-fi dark ambient drone.

review by Derek Morton
"Lost Hilde - Stray Ghost" (review)
The releases on Highpoint Lowlife switch genres like someone channel
surfing through alternative music TV. Lost Hilde adds yet another
station to the programming, and an engrossing one at that. Everything
begins as a smooth midnight cruise through glitched and looped
synthetic sounds.

review by Max Schaefer
"Sympathetic Vibration - Marcus Jones" (review)
Often, recordings exist as complete works in themselves, or as
documents or mementos of a live performance. Sympathetic Vibration is
one of a rapidly expanding body of works that do not fit easily into
either category, blurring the boundaries between recorded materials
and live event. Stacey Sewell chats to its creator, phonographer and
sound designer Markus Jones.

?revenant? is an ongoing project with open membership that focuses on
site-specific acoustic actions, or activated environments. each action
is a document of a specific moment in time in a specific location. the
name, "revenant", derives from a concept of spatial memory, or, more
specifically, of the long-term gestural memory of space; the ability of
a location to retain an imprint or trace of activity or energy that has
been present therein. "revenant : topol?" was recorded in a forest near
the italian village of topol?, not far the slovenien border, during the
"pushing the medium 3" symposium in october 2006. all sounds originated
from materials found in-situ, or from the space itself. no overdubbing
or editing was done in order to document this specific action and
location in time.
booklet includes images of the site and writings by all five
participants in a design by hitoshi kojo. from olivier feraud's text:
"Huge pines, chestnuts, beeches, and a few oaks. A vague border. On one
side a Slovenian village, on the other an Italian one, which our maps
locate at the end of a cul de sac. Yet between the two, crossing the
forest, a path connects them and allows a walker to cross this border
without even realising it. En route for this Slovenian village, on this
ageless path, having begun in the village of Topol?, bags full of bits
and pieces: a few biscuits, a recorder, some chocolate, several worn out
old violin bows. The path becomes ever steeper and more tortuous,
sometimes blocked by fallen logs, sometimes aided by stone steps barely
showing. The trees try to tempt us off the path; then one or two of us
give in to the call of a huge pine standing proudly to one side. We
approach it; its bark is pierced by a hundred dried twigs, old branches
that never grew larger and stayed within human reach. With the first
light touch the tree speaks: a strangled sound pierced through by a note
both muffled and sharp, a pluck of another twig, a bowing of a third, a
held frequency, a slight pressure on another until it breaks. Each dried
branch of this sound-tree gives rise to stammers, murmurs, cries or
whispers, linguistic trial and error and imaginary articulations..."
best,
patrick

Subject: [microsound-announce] my playlist & recommendations this week:
dragon's eye recordings
Message-ID: <5a9dc0d60811210447r521f35eiaa1319bca7fe6aad@mail.gmail.com>
This week my playlist has been filled with the titles from the
wonderful Dragons' Eye Recordings catalog.
http://www.experimedia.net/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=8_25
I can't recommend these releases enough. Every single release has its
own unique quality. Its also worth mentioning that Experimedia
artists Ian Hawgood (aka Koen Park) will have a release coming out on
Dragon's Eye in 2009.
I personally and sincerely recommend every release so far but here are
a few standout highlights:
kamran sadeghi - through thickness (de5018/cd)
marc manning - a skeleton, soon and then forever (de5015/cd)
yann novak - in residence (de5014/cd)
yann novak - intermission (de5011/cd)
son of rose - divisions in parallel (der002/cd)
novak/drouin - auditorium (der001/cd)
The Dragon's Eye compilations are very much worth mentioning as well.

12 Meter Power Chord, an installation/performance by Derek Holzer for
STYX Project Space Berlin
Sound is a physical phenomenon. Three strings resonate at intervals to
each other and activate the architecture they remain tensed across. But
sound is also a cultural phenomenon. Three strings tuned at specific
mathematical ratios create the infamous power chord--the signature sound
of heavy metal guitar. "12 Meter Power Chord" walks the tightrope
between the phenomenological and intellectual aspects of sound and space
by sonifying the intervals found in the architectural space of the
gallery using piano wire.
"12 Meter Power Chord" runs as an acoustic installation from 7-28
November 2008, with amplified live performances for the opening and
finissage, 7 & 28 November, 19:00-22:00.
Other artists showing are SIX, with his "Pervateen" photo series, and
Sue de Beer with stills from her "Hans und Grete" video.

/*framework*/ - phonography / field recording; contextual and

presented by patrick mcginley
so - a small muck-up this week: in the confusion of my own muddled
brain, i forgot to update to podcast and streaming files this last week,
which i'm sure you were all very upset about, meaning that the show from
09.11 has been online for an extra week, while you've all been waiting
patiently for the show from 16.11. and now it's time to put up the show
from 24.11! well fear not, all has worked out for the best, as there
/was/ no new show this week, 24.11, as resonancefm had a special live
studio performance on sunday night, and radio zero broadcast an archive
show. so! that means i can put up the show from 16.11 /now/, leave it
there for the next week, and nothing will be missed. so that's what i'm
doing.
did you follow all that?
on the 16th we heard some great new sounds from none other than our
illustrious co-founder, mr *joel stern*, along with *loren chasse*, from
joel's own *naturestrip* label. two fine, fine albums. this mingled
with sounds of empty spaces recorded by *noid*, and the latest
collection of untreated field recordings from *gruenrekorder* by *tobias
bolt*. next week will be another regular edition, featuring, i might
add in a smattering of self-promotion, the first document of a project
i've been working on over the last few years with the likes of *john
grzinich*, *yannick dauby*, *olivier feraud,* and *hitoshi kojo* -
/*revenant:topolo*/ will be released at the beginning of december on
*eric cordier*'s *prele* label here in france (more info at
http://www.prelerecords.com and http://www.revenantsound.net).
next week will also be the first show to be aired on our latest
participating station, *radio campus* in brussels! welcome to the
team. if you are involved in an independent radio station that might be
interested in adding framework to its schedule, please get in touch!
again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw
field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction
submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of
our guest curated series. send proposals or material, released or not,
on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please
don't hesitate to get in touch!

what the artist had to say about this fantastic album.
"I recently famished an album made over the last seven years with a

stylistically similar, oscillating between improv, experimental,
electroacoustic, ambient, post-folk, noise, sound-art, glitch and
electronica...which rolled together I call 'eclectrictronica' coz it
rolls right off the tongue. A smorgabored of acoustic+electronic
instruments were used, which were subject to live
editing/mixing/mangling/processing."

microsounders,
John and Paulo are busily working to resolve these 'bouncing' issues
apparently there is some weird setting/bug/feature/whatever at the
ISP hosting the microsound.org list
which is bouncing emails like rubber checks
so please bear with us - some of the problems are not within our control
and the ISP is not giving up the love on resolving these issues for us
so one solution on the table is to switch to John's server which
seems to be more robust and easier to deal with
I apologize for any inconvenience and frustration
greetings from Hamburg,
KIM

Hola Microsound : (english version please scroll down)

Hi Microsound :
Pueblo Nuevo Netlabel proudly presents the double album "Boo Boo", from chilean musician Francisco Pinto.
"The way has opened, without prejudices, to the most tempered melodic instinct in what has gone through the Pueblo Nuevos veins. Undoubtedly, Francisco Pinto's work, adjust to an urgent present of instant songs that talk about sonic treatment and lyrics when needed.
This huge production, presents effective melodies of easy remembrance, and some advantages through the optic of Pop music. Boo Boo, is a delicate work based in synthetic textures and guitars, that at this time of production, it goes like a particular sign of quality and warmth in his music.
In the Twentieth Century, during the music radio broadcasting culture, they talked about 'singles', well, here is a bunch of them where you can choose from."

Subject: [microsound-announce] Call for Work - Vague Terrain 12: Device Art
Message-ID: <825dc38e0811270737j35de4daan49a7b6561c9ddd21@mail.gmail.com>
Vague Terrain 12: Device Art - Call for Work
Call Extended! See details below:
In our daily lives, we are surrounded by electronic or electro-mechanical
devices used as conduits to deliver "content" ranging from televised operas
to hip-hop ring-tones. Only rarely are the devices themselves considered to
be the content. The tradition of high-tech devices as art, however, dates
back to ancient machines known only from legends, through the golden ages of
clockwork automata, through modern kinetic sculpture, up to the present
time, when students in art colleges take courses in microcontroller
programming and robotics.
Vague Terrain 12 is about the machine as art in the 21st century, with the
understanding that "machine" is no longer strictly defined as "mechanical
device". We are interested in devices created as art objects, as platforms
for art or performance, devices as unique objects, and mass produced
devices, produced either as art multiples, or as tools for artistic
pursuits.
We are seeking submissions in all formats- audio, video, photographic
documentation, and text. Submissions can be documentation of work, or can
deal with artistic or creative practice with respect to device art.
If you are interested in submitting work to be considered for inclusion in
Vague Terrain 12: Device Art please contact guest curator Rob Cruickshank
through his Vague Terrain user profile.
Additional Information
Format:
-please see http://vagueterrain.net/content/journal/submission-guidelinesfor
full submission guidelines. Please consult this document as it is very
important to read when considering the scope and deliverables of a
submission.
Submission Deadline:
The submission deadline for Vague Terrain 12: Device Art is Sunday December
7th (this has been extended). Our tentative publication date is January 1st.
Curator Information:
Rob Cruickshank is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist. His work in
various media including electronic, kinetic, and robotic installations,
sound art, electroacoustic music, and photography have been exhibited in
Toronto, and internationally. Much of his work is associated with
InterAccess Electronic Media Arts Centre in Toronto, where he has developed
a number of hands-on workshops for artists using electronics., and is
currently a member of the Board of Directors. His work combines a knowledge
of physical computing with an ongoing fascination with sound, light, and
motion. It is as much informed by the kinetic art of the early 20th century
as it is by contemporary new media art. Works such as Spiral Inscriber
(2005) combine microcontrollers with intricate electromechanical systems,
reminiscent of early clockwork and mechanical devices, and reflect his
interest in obsolete technologies. Many of these works are collaborative in
nature, and he has been part of several long-term collaborative projects at
Interaccess, such as Space Probe (1998), SenseBus (1999), Art Interface
Device (2001), as well as being a member of I/O media, a collective of sound
and video artists exploring real-time improvised performance.

Message-ID: <492FE996.5060803@umatic.nl>
To subsidize some DIY synthsizer projects I'm working on, I'm selling
off one RME Quad Mic preamp. It's a four channel, incredibly clean and
low noise preamp with 48V Phantom power and a gain range of +10 to +60
dB, has XLR/TRS Jack inputs plus Jack outputs, a Low Cut and a Phase
switch and is ideal for people doing studio recording or live processing
of microphone inputs, and makes an excellent companion for the
Hammerfall DSP soundcard. It comes without a powersupply, but can use
almost anything from 7-30 Volts AC or DC. New price EUR 375 at
Thomann.de, asking EUR 275 + shipping from Berlin, Germany. Item can be
picked up if you happen to be in Berlin, of course.
http://www.rme-audio.com/english/micpreamps/quadmic.htm
Also considering parting with a Sennheiser MKH 30/40 pair in Rycote
windscreen + cables and flightcase. Inquire if interested.
best!

Cory Allen | Gesemi Tropisms
TRANS004
Physical Edition 50
Compiling a lust for beauty, obsession with detail, and a
unique philosophy concerning the 'multidimensional architecture of sonic
space,' Cory Allen is a composer who applies his endless study of cognitive
science/philosophy with refined and abstract composition methods in order to
delicately 'tune in' the vibrations of his music to the perceiver?s nervous
system. Using a Moog Voyager and other electronic devices, Allen creates
throbbing, rolling, fountains of electronic elegance, causing the listener to
relinquish their bodies to a state of bemused abstraction.
Having gone on to record albums highly praised albums for
CON-V, TEST TUBE and Quiet Design Bremsstrahlung Recordings is pleased to be
releasing Cory Allen?s first effort ?Gesemi Tropisms? in physical form.
Like all TRANS>PARENT RADIATION releases this edition of
50 comes in a custom die-cut self-latching cover with stamped graphics.

influenciats per la repetici? (Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Tony Conrad,
et.al.) i amanits amb una mica de Tangerine Dream, dub y dancehall reggae.
La primera refer?ncia de Weirding Module va ser un cassette per al
segell American Tapes (de John Olson, Wolf Eyes) per al festival No
