Featuring Stephan Mathieu & Aleks Kolkowski, John Wall, DJ Scotch Egg, Blood Stereo & Ludo Mich plus the best emerging artists back-to-back with some of the leading figures in UK sonic art playing things you've never heard before (and maybe never will again). See www.fantasticalreality.com for the latest on the show and to get involved. Expo is three days and nights of people enjoying, playing, discovering and listening to sonic art. Experience a wiki-conference, a radiophonic intervention in the Royal Pavilion Gardens, installations and performances, shopping centre public art, club nights and film screenings across the streets, buildings and air waves of Brighton. A full programme will be announced on the Expo website soon. Expo Unconference? It has a large and growing library of sound synthesis modules and supports structural concepts in composition as well as new approaches to musical design like live coding. The architecture of SuperCollider is optimized for working in real time and for networking with other softwares and machines via Open Sound Control. SC3 is free and open source, runs under OSX, Linux and Windows. Binaries as well as sources of SC3 can be downloaded from http://supercollider.sourceforge.net/ The participants must bring their own computers with SC installed. The main platform for the course will be OSX. In general, Linux or Windows will work as well but you have to install SC by yourself in advance! In order to run SC under Linux you need to configure emacs as an editor and to install SwingOSC as GUI for SC. For Windows you need Psycollider and SwingOSC as GUI. Topics - basic concepts of SC3: server (scsynth) and client (sclang), synths and synthdefs (patches) nodes and busses - modules for synthesis und processing of audio signals: unit generators (oscillators, noise, filters, delays ...), buffers and sampling envelopes, triggers, control signals FFT - language basics: objects and messages, classes and methods functions, arguments and variables operators collections (arrays, lists, dictionaries ...) and list processing control structures (if, while, do, switch ...) - generation and organisation of events and sounds: scheduler and tasks streams and patterns scores recording und non-real-time recording - synthesis and audio processing examples: additive synthesis granular synthesis delay-based effects multichannel and spatialization techniques analysis and intermodulation techniques presentation of projects and realizations - control and networking: Open Sound Control and remote servers MIDI and HI devices - other topics: GUI overview live coding extensions -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Saavedra (Equipo) Barcelona, Abril 2008. "This is the fourth time I listen to "Aminta", Anamlor Smith's opera prima... It doesn't sound like a debut album at all. It sounds more like a turning point, an inflection, a moment of meditation and pause after a long trip... Sound design here is tied to all this 5-10 years old european electronica, plus countless other musics detailed in her myspace's "influences" section... But the presence of her voice is what calls attention the most: it is haunting, elusive, sometimes playing hide-and-seek with the songs... "Aminta" is a conceptual album, but a closed one, with deeply hidden meanings and symbols, like a myth or a legend ... After a while, trying to understand the whole thing is useless... Everything around it is so seductive you spontaneously surrender to the spell... "'Aminta' is Anamlor's idiosyncratic Magical Mystery Tour... just like Congregacion Viene was for his father, Antonio Smith... Time to roll up, again..." Gerardo Figueroa Rodriguez Santiago, Abril 2008. "Anamlor's album is intense, subtle, and warm... it takes you by the hand and guides you... entices you, taking every piece of clothing off ... yielding... in complete surrender..." Curated by Garrett Lynch (http://www.asquare.org/) the event will present a series of interdisciplinary performances and projections by various artists. Sound and visual artists / groups working across the areas of art, music, media and new technologies within live performance / projected contexts are invited to contribute to this event under an open theme. What does this mean? There is no imposed theme instead we want to present a selection of time-based work by artists based on their themes, their continuing research, as an event which will explore the diverse and interdisciplinary nature of audio-visual arts. Proposed performances / projected works can be new or pre-existing works, improvised, dynamically generated (such as software art) or pre- composed, abstract or figurative, individual or collaborative, experimental, site specific and much, much more. All proposals are required to be: 1. time-based (remember this is a audience based event in a theatre) 2. and ether audio-visual, audio only or visual only work (selection preference will be given to works which are audio-visual) Works should aim to be a maximum of 30 minutes each however this is flexible. As the event is free we are unable to offer individual payment to artists however we will provide access to reasonable requests for equipment (please include a list of requirements in your proposal and we will attempt to cater for this) at the venue and of course the opportunity to present work in one of Cardiff's newest cutting edge venues. Proposals should take the form of a word / pdf / rtf / txt document (two pages maximum) with: 1. A description of the work (500 words maximum). 2. Images to give us an idea of the proposed work. 3. A full list of required equipment (please note that the event will host several performers so complex configurations involving lengthy set-up times will not be catered for). 4. Urls to previous examples of work online (videos or sound files online are particularly useful). 5. A short bio (200 words maximum). 6. Artist(s) / group / performer(s) name and full contact details. Please email proposals as compressed attachments (.zip / .dmg / .sit / .sitx / tar.gz / .tgz) to Garrett Lynch (garrett [at] asquare dot org) no later than 12pm (GMT), Friday 16/05/08. To get an idea of the type of events we organise please see our website (http://openear.wordpress.com/) for full details of all past events and our YouTube account (http://ie.youtube.com/openeargroup) for videos of pasts events. :: The Venue :: The University of Glamorgan's newly built ATRiuM in Cardiff, Wales opened in 2007 and houses the Cardiff School of Creative & Cultural Industries which comprises of Art & Design, Media & Communication and Drama & Music. Situated in central Cardiff, Wales, this specially- designed building contains cutting edge technology and facilities including industry-standard studios, a theatre and cinema. Address: ATRiuM Theatre, Adam Street, Cardiff, Wales, CF24 2FN Detailed information on how to get here can be found on the university website (http://www.glam.ac.uk/visiting#atrium). One can see this composition as an official elegy/tribute to the Modernist music pioneer, Karlheinz Stockhausen. XANADRuuL was created from samples that were solely derived from the Composer's (Wirxli's) own digitally manipulated voice. This composition was inspired by Stockhausen's claim of being an alien from Sirius and so the 3 sections of this composition correspond to Sirius A, B and C stars. In addition, there are also many references to Xanadu (including the movie with Olivia Newton John). The Opening Ceremonies take place on Sirius A where angels sing along with the selected voice samples from heavenly heights on the ceiling of a pentagonal geodesic dome and also on Sirius B where meandering avatars vainly attempt to communicate with these alien angelic muses using only pre-recorded samples. Sirius C is a "meta-composition" and is performed by the public throughout Second Life. ** Set Design and Construction by Dethomas Dibou (Detlef Thomas), Regensburg, Germany Instruments and Halos by Bingo Onomatopoeia (Andreas Mueller), Regensburg,Germany *___ The Heart of Tones** (mixed reality version) by Pauline Oliveros (Free Noyes)* This piece was originally composed for trombone and two oscillators, and commissioned by Abbie Conant and her *Wired Goddess Project *during her residency at Mills College in the Fall of 1999. This is an ensemble version of the piece adapted for the mixed realities of Second Life and Real Life, combining virtual instruments with live trombones and voices. *The Heart of Tones*: A tone, in this instance D4, is minutely explored in the smallest possible increments on, above and below the prescribed pitch, through the smallest timbre variations and spatial locations by performers on virtual and RL instruments. The pitch variations are never more than a half step away from the given pitch. The resultant beats, timbral shifts and audio illusions create rhythms, transformations and textures of depth. The focus is on listening to the beat frequencies and the overtones that result. The musicians decide independently and intuitively on the variations. Virtual Instruments and Cloaks / Receivers by Bingo Onomatopoeia (Andreas Mueller), Regensburg, Germany ___ *Avatar Orchestra Metaverse* is a group of composers, performers, and media artists living in Europe, East Asian and North America who explore together the interactive possibilities of the Second Life online virtual reality platform to create works with open, interactive and possibly "infinite" elements. The Orchestra works with ideas that challenge conventional practices of creating and performing music, and finds new ways to conceive of and erase notions of identity, place, social, cultural and sexual identity, and the roles of composer, performer and listener. For this special performance, dedicated to the memory of two exceptional human beings and musicians, the Orchestra is joined by guest vocalists, trombonists and instrumentalists from Canada and the United States, whose avatars will appear on Second Life with their streamed instrumental sound joining the virtual AOM instruments. * Guest vocalists:* Aurel Miles (Stephanie Farrington), Ottawa, Canada Chris Reiche (Bowlerhat Trenchcoat), Victoria, Canada * Guest Trombonists* (*Heart of Tones*) Sum Noyes (Monique Buzzarte), Trombonejen Wigglesworth (Jen Baker) Weave Noyes (Sarah Weaver) And in spirit, Toyoji MacDonnell (Toyoji Tomita) with a special appearance by The *Seattle Toyoji Band* appearing as avatar StuArtnoise Sass (Heart of Tones): Thomasa Eckert, voice Janice Giteck, cello Roger Nelson, piano Paul Taub, flute Renko Ishida Dempster, koto Stuart Dempster, trombone *Avatar Orchestra Performers:* *AOM virtual instruments:* Bingo Onomatopoeia (Andreas Mueller), Regensburg, Germany Blaise delaFrance (Biagio Fracia), Italy Free Noyse (Pauline Oliveros), Kingston, New York, USA Goodwind Seiling (Sachiko Hayashi), Stockholm, Sweden Gumnosophistai Nurmi (Leif Inge), Oslo, Norway Ida Aabye (Nathalie Fougeras), Brussels, France Miulew Takahe (Bjorn Eriksson), Solleftea, Sweden Paco Mariani (Chris Wittkowsky), Regensburg, Germany Wirxli Flimflam (Jeremy Owen Turner, Vancouver, Canada) *Voices and AOM virtual instruments:* Fernsing Llewelyn (Cathy Lewis), Victoria, Canada Humming Pera (Tina Pearson), Victoria, Canada Liz Solo (Liz Solo), St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada Zonzo Spyker (Viv Corringham), Minneapolis, USA, London, UK Streaming by Loop Luo (Loopland), Regensburg, Germany) Streaming host: Eifach Films , Basel, Switzerland * May 10 2 PM PDT, 5 PM EDT, 11 PM CEDT* --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-- Avatar Orchestra Metaverse - ************************************ http://avatarorchestra.com -~----------~----~----~----~------~---- Nathalie Fougeras -- Last personal project 'double_skin' residency in bains::connective art laboratory, brussels: http://www.mutin.org/BI/wakka.php?&wiki=BI3 Last event curated by Nathalie Fougeras, in the Centre for Digital Cultures and Technology iMAL with StreamOnYou http://www.imal.org/StreamOnYou/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This piece is a radio version containing excerpts from a 2005 live performance and parts which were recorded previously in the countryside in Switzerland. The main source for the text were blogs and war reports by American soldiers collected by the authors on the internet. In addition, fragments of diaries written by French soldiers during WWI and quotations of Slavoj Zizek's ? Welcome to the Desert of the Real ? have also been used. Once collected, the texts have been freely adapted and transformed using various techniques, such as translation into French, cut-up writing, and random text generators. The final result was then recorded by the authors and guest voices as a four-track tape composition, together with additional sounds. For the live version of //? //Camp Victory //?//, the composition was played over headphones to four performers with a different track for each. The performers were asked to repeat the words and sounds they heard as best as they could, while the sound of the original composition remained hidden from the audience. The title of the piece, //? //Camp Victory //?//, refers to the biggest US military base in Baghdad, hosting twelve thousands soldiers. St?phane Montavon, born 1977, is currently a researcher at the Iconic Criticism Institute Eikones in Basel and teaches French literature at Basel University. As an experimental writer he has published poetry and essays in various magazines and on the Internet. Gilles Aubry, born 1973, is a sound artist and composer living currently in Berlin. Comment by Gilles Aubry on Camp Victory : ? The invasion of Iraq by the coalition's troops started on the 20st of March 2003. I remember that day very well and how I was shocked. We had been following on TV the preparation of the war for the past six months, with its permanent flow of propaganda including speeches by president Bush and Tony Blair, General Colin Powell's presentation to the United Nation Security Council, staged images of aircraft carriers in the sunset, and the powerlessness of worldwide protests. When the invasion finally started I became speechless, silence being the only option remaining after the liquidation of my remaining few illusions not only about democracy and justice, but also about the power of reason, art, and the history lessons to have contributed to a somehow civilised society. Later on I discovered the existence of blogs on the internet by American soldiers and became fascinated by their dispassionate, cold-blooded tone while reporting on their daily-life in Iraq. As I was asked to compose a new piece for a festival in Switzerland in 2005 I decided to use these texts as main source material. //? //Camp Victory //?// is not a piece about the war in Iraq, but rather a reaction and commentary on its mediatization and on the discourse underlying its justification. It should be made clear that all the violence displayed in the piece is addressing the discourse of the invaders themselves and their societies, since the invaded populations were not given a voice from the beginning. ? Through the use of constantly evolving rhythmic and melodic structures, "Programmatic Responses" draws us into a hypnotic world of rhythmic evolution. Created from overlapping pattern fragments repeated at un-synchronized lenghs, and melodic elements that are built from Reich-like "phasing" time signatures, the compositions on "Programmatic Responses" are based firmly in the digital-futurist world. Created using a custom developed live composition and mixing environment (comprised of Numerology and Bidule) the compositions were performed and captured live in one pass with no post production. With "Programmatic Responses", Valeo ? a student of the groove, creates the perfect soundtrack in response to and for the constantly shifting inhabitants of modern cities everywhere. -- RJ Valeo rjvaleo at gmail.com Current Releases Richard J Valeo - Programmatic Responses [http://transelectronic.net] Upcoming Releases: Isomer Transition - Orbits Decaying [ http://archipel.cc ] Carbon Framework - Old Friends [ http://creation-centre.com ] TET - From the Vaults Volume 1 [ http://transelectronic.net ] http://transelectronic.net/v2 live sets, exclusive digital releases, music and technology reviews and articles. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... "Anamlor Smith finally unveils her best kept secret: her first album, which reveals her as one of our finest talents. Minimalism and Dub magically matched with seductive melody and lyrics". J.C. "Anamlor's album is intense, subtle, and warm... it takes you by the hand and guides you... entices you, taking every piece of clothing off ... yielding... in complete surrender..." I think many of you will enjoy it. Thanks for reading. http://www.restingbell.net/releases/rb032-glare Description Jeremy Bible and Jason Henry are two productive artists based in Canton, Ohio, an area of the United States referred to as 'the rust belt' due to its rapid industrial decline. Similar to their surroundings which contrast rural farmland against decaying industrial landscapes, the duo contrast various sounds and styles in ways that can be compared to the elegant and subtle color contrasts created by painters of fine abstract-expressionist art. Utilizing field recordings, found sounds, acoustic instrumentation and electronic soundscapes, their compositions take place in the wide field of musique concrete, experimental acoustic music, and electronic sound design. "glare" is a huge piece of modern contemporary music. 5 tracks, about 60 minutes duration. >From the first track, you can almost grab the intense and exciting spirit, being inherent in these pieces. Dark and gloomy melodies meet abstract glitches, lost radio frequencies, mysterious field recordings and other interferences. With all these ingredients, Jeremy and Jason create warm, nostalgic, and at times frightening scenery. It smells like old basements, dusty treasure chests, old physical instruments and yellowed pictures from your grandmother's photo album. The duo's growing catalog of "sound paintings", each creating a new experience, will see release through a growing list of labels including Resting Bell, Gruenrekorder, Abgurd, Gears of Sand, and their own imprint, Experimedia. The common theme of the two works is 'travel': Hans van Eck's Nuctemeron offers a trip to the unknown parts of the mind while Luigi Nono portrays to the listener a lonely violinist dwelling in the unfamiliar landscape of sounds coming from 8 speakers positioned around the hall in his 'La lontananza nostalgica utopica futura'. A kind of music in which during the performance the use of traditional instruments like violin and bass clarinet and electronics means like computers and mixing consoles are used. The intention is to combine the sounds of these two kind of instruments in such a way that all hierarchical differences between acoustic and electronic sounds are removed and timbral integration is created. Besides specifically projectbound research, Schreck Ensemble/Assembly is also busy developing new instruments, of which the Stratifier and the BassBoxcan be regarded as succesfull examples. Also new interactive processing applications like ComParser are written, allowing musicians to have a far directer control over the electronics then previously before were possible, leading towards a new way of performing music. Coupled to the event is a Performance Lab session in the form of a three day workshop by GOTO10's Jan-Kees van Kampen. In this workshop we will work on a collaborative playground for an audiovisual performance/installation. Focussing on using scsynth to generate sound, hold data and build a sequencer for networked play, we use the supercollider language as an intermediate between the server and external clients. SuperCollider is a programming language for sound and electronic music. Excellently adapted to a contemporary environment of networks, free software and live coding, SuperCollider is an extraordinary tool in the technological artist's arsenal. It sounds gorgeous too. GOTO10 is a collective of international artists and programmers, dedicated to Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS) and digital arts. GOTO10 aims to support and grow digital art projects and tools for artistic creation, located on the blurry line between software programming and art. The workshop is free. We are in the danger of losing our structural funding from the government, based on a review from the advisor board which called us "closed and only appealing to a niche audience". The outlook isn't exactly bleak, but at the moment our future is unclear. As we see you as an important friend and colleague of STEIM, we would like to ask you to help us present our case that we are connected to a diverse network of professionals and that our work has significant influence on both a Dutch and an international community. What you can do is to send a letter of support, and make sure we recieve it by May 26. We hope that these letters will show the variety and depth of the effect STEIM has in the real world. The contents are up to you, a few good lines will suffice. You could tell how you or someone you know benefited from their contact with STEIM: making or refining an instrument or an idea for a performance or meeting fellow artists, or what you feel would be lost if STEIM ceased to exist, or waxing aphoristic, just 12 words about STEIM. Also include some specific details of your context: as an artist or educator or musician or code hacker - so your place in the world will be visible for the committee. A letterhead with your organization or institution and your position or title above your signature are small things that can leave an impression. ENVIROSONIC MOVE>SOUND: Soundwave>Series ((3)) Season Opening Event Date June 27, 2008 8:00 PM 7:30pm Doors, 8pm Performance Location The Lab 2948 16th Street San Francisco, CA 94103 Info Line 415 216-3102 Tickets and Website http://www.projectsoundwave.... Description Movement-triggered Sound Environments. Live Amplified Processed Skateboard Railing - Sam McKinley & Christian Nicolay (Vancouver, Canada); Sound Drawings - Diana Burgoyne (Vancouver, Canada); Resonant Sorcery - Beno + Minnie (San Francisco, CA) Soundwave begins its new season MOVE SOUND with a stunning sonic assault on the audiences sensory environment. Sam McKinley and Christian Nicolay sonify the urban landscape as a skateboarder and an amplified railing become a living, breathing instrument. Diana Burgoyne creates a sonic masterpiece by enveloping the audience with live drawings that activate sounds into a rising cacophonic score from the copper frames elemental reaction to graphite. Beno + Minnie combines melodies culled from tree spirits, shaken and stirred percussion and layers of vocal textures with video and projection interventions. Soundwave is a multi-venue and multi-date festival happening over the span of two months every two years in San Francisco USA. Each season investigates a new idea in sound and invites diverse multidisciplinary artists and musicians to explore the season's theme in new and innovative directions. It challenges and inspires artists and audiences to look deeper into the sound medium and discover new connections to sound making and the sound experience. In its third season, the series has completed two successful seasons, Season 2's SURROUND>SOUND in 2006 and Season 1's FREE>SOUND in 2004. The project was recently named 'Best Sound Sculptures ? Future Classic' by San Francisco Magazine's BEST of 2007 issue. jorge bachmann [ruidobello] P.O.Box: 15953 http://anihilo.com San Francisco, CA 94115 http://ruidobello.ch M: (415)706-9629 http://www.myspace.com/ruidobello -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Back in May of 2004 we've released "Niju" in a tiny 3" cdr. This is an expanded digital edition of "Niju" in a multimedia download containing: the original recording plus 3 bonus tracks; an exclusive quicktime video by Kudo and Yamada a.k.a copenhagen; one pdf booklet. + info: http://ristrettomusiclabel.blogspot.com/2007/08/asamo-niju.html @c - "48EDE" In 2005 we've released "48" by the portuguese brilliant duo of "grainy abstract electronica", @c (Miguel Carvalhais + Pedro Tudela). Now "48" turns "48EDE". In what is a truly expanded digital edition of more than 60 minutes of music and including also a beautifull 22-page pdf booklet with artwork by long-time @c visual partner, Lia + info: http://ristrettomusiclabel.blogspot.com/2007/08/c-48.html Takahiro Kawaguchi - "Soundscape with 2 objects" Takahiro Kawaguchi is a japanese field recordist and sound artist and "Soundscape with 2 objects" came out on Ristretto two years ago, packaged in a transparent clamshell containing a 5" cdr. This digital download edition is a reissue of the original "Soundscape with 2 objects" now expanded with a quicktime video by Tetsuro Honma for one additional raw and pure field recording by Takahiro Kawaguchi. Even with such a rate of releases, quality is not an issue, as Jo?o - aka Operador de Cabine Polivalente (OCP for short) does always really interesting works. 'Stepping Stone' is one more of those works. Again, Jo?o takes the 'single piece' approach for added immersive experience. The piece shapeshifts through its thirty-two minutes and a half course, filled with highly textured sound palletes. A focused listener will find at least three distinct 'movements' in this piece, or better yet, three core ones with an additional smaller interlude-ish one. The second main movement is an organic symphony made from string notes colliding and overlapping themselves into repetitive loops. The final and last movement - and my favorite - starts with a dub ambient approach to a sci-fi drama; dense and heavy and glitchy, and rapidly turns into a full glitch/field recording/improv. long finale, with warm, rubbed-out edges of awesomely (is that a word?) well made ambient. Someone once wrote in a review that there's never a dull or boring moment in Jo?o Ricardo's works, and that never was so absolutely and undeniably true as it is now.? - Pedro Leit?o -- http://ocp.pt.vu -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Field recordings were taken exclusively inside of this place. Additionally electronic tones were launched within the space and captured with microphones. However, the work evolved into unsuspected landscapes, moving itself into tremendously introspective places, dark and fragmented. Thus that which began with objective formal exploration shifted itself into a process of self-psychoanalysis, a study about being." m.a.g. www.bremsstrahlung-recordings.org/transradiation/trans011.php josh russell www.josh-russell.org www.bremsstrahlung-recordings.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The evening features original Cage collaborators *Joel Chadabe, (sound), David Eisenman (visuals) and Donald Gillies. Musicians include Eve Egoyan, Marc Couroux, Casey Sokol, Tania Gill, Gregory Oh, Gayle Young, George Boski, William Blakeney, Robert Wheeler (Pere Ubu), Bob Doidge, Amy King and more*. The complete presentation will last for 4 hours, but visitors are invited to come and go at will, something Cage, no doubt, would have approved of. *This concert is produced with the assistance of the Electronic Music Foundation in New York to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Musicworks Magazine, and serves as a fundraiser for Musicworks, Canadas only experimental music and sound art publication.* World-renowned composer John Cage (1912-1992) composed BirdCage in 1971, working with Joel Chadabe, the founder and president of the Electronic Music Foundation. Cage's composition consisted of 12 half-hour tapes with three tracts of recorded sounds: the chirping of birds in aviaries, the electronically treated sounds of Cage reading words from Henry David Thoreau's "Walden," and fragments of found sounds and ambient street noise. In "performing" the piece, Cage operated a matrix mixer to select from the various tapes at random. Joel Chadabe has prepared a ''spatialized, new realization" of the work for a digital age in which a computer software program continually, and randomly, selects from the recorded materials. HPSCHD, by John Cage and Lejaren Hiller, is arguably the wildest composition of the 20th century. Big, brash, exuberant, raucous, a performance involves hours of ongoing high-level intensity. The sound is a mixture of seven amplified harpsichords playing computer-generated variations of Mozart and other composers along with 51 computer-generated tapes playing what could be off-tuned trumpets sounding some musical charge. The thousands of swirling images, overlaid and mixed, of abstract shapes and colors and of space imagery from slides and films borrowed from NASA, create a chaotic riot of shifting form and color. Visitors can peruse a small gallery of the historic Fluxus posters and artwork created for the debut performance at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in May, 1969. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see one of the most important compositions of the 20th Century performed in its entirety. I'd plan it for around the last two weeks of july, but have to propose it to the organisers there and nothing is fixed, could be also in a completely different time slot/duration... These two weeks would give space for working on a personal project, in a beautiful landscape, an inspiring place and with colleagues which could help to break the creative knots. I will be giving an introduction into Max for beginners and will show my tricks to advanced Max users alike. The only requirement would be that the manual had been read, and the tutorials had been gone through once. (elsewise it would be a little waist of time...;-) It would be open to users of Pd, SC, Csound and similar tools as well, but my personal experience with these tools is not as profound as with Max... (There must be an area where I keep my spirit of being a newbie alive...) At the end we would be able to present our results to the public... Aion aims to unfold four abandoned spaces inside the Zone of Exclusion in Chernobyl, Ukraine. It deals with a sonic and visual experience of time, absence, and change - in an area haunted by an invisible and inaudible danger, amidst the slowly decaying remains of human civilization. My collaboration with Francisco Janes investigates the space of an abandoned rice factory near the river Tagus, 30 km from Lisbon, and deals with the mesmerizing ruins of an industrial splendour from which only remains intriguing metal organs, empty rooms haunted with inscriptions and suspended artifacts deprived and forgotten of their original function. ah, soon to be demolished. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------- Out now on Sirr: Janek Schaefer ::: Alone at Last :::: CD sirr0031 Alone at last' is a studio album, written over the first decade of Janek's career as a composer, sound artist, and musician. Each piece is a response to an invitation. The source sounds are produced using location recordings and manipulated vinyl, which are simply processed through his collection of foot pedals & mixing desk, and then assembled on screen. We are accepting entirely open submissions in a Wiki format for presentations, demonstrations, talks and panel discussions. Here's a quick update: I want to run a session of lightning presentations towards the end of the day. I already have one sign-up, and hopefully another in the pipeline. A lightning presentation is exactly 6:40 long and is made up of 20 slides for 20 seconds. The presentations come thick and fast. I'm hoping to have between 10 and 15 towards the end of the day, to ease us all into the evening/night frivolities at the Uni. So if you have something you'd like to present in a open, relaxed, quick way, to whet people's appetites, then sign up for one of these. If you might do but aren't sure - just email me (david at sonicartsnetwork.org). I'm pulling together a keynote panel discussion around nonprofit/art/ community radio. This will tie together the whole weekend and be broadcast through our partner RadioReverb. Present and discuss your recently finished academic papers... Demonstrate your software developments... Discuss a recent project your your performance practice... It's free. It's open, and it will be a great place to meet people who are doing interesting things. It really is up to the community to make it happen, so please get involved. unconference.expofestival.org Cheers David Rogerson Sonic Arts Network From testtube at monocromatica.com Thu May 29 11:30:07 2008 From: testtube at monocromatica.com (test tube news ) Date: Thu, 29 May 2008 08:30:07 -0700 Subject: [Microsound-announce] test tube news ~ 016 ~ may 2008 (NOVELTIES IN THE BACKPACK) Message-ID: <20080529153033.54419EB0DE@coyote.dreamhost.com> * if you can read this, go here: http://www.monocromatica.com/netlabel/newsletter/newsletter_016_may2008.html * test tube news ~ #016 ~ may 2008 test tube news ~ #016 ~ may 2008 NOVELTIES IN THE BACKPACK Hi! We'll be there from June 4 to 6 and our showcases are June 6th in a marvellous venue called Reales Atarazanas, which is a XII century historical building. Sharing the stage will be lots of artists from Spain, Germany, France and U.S.A. and we're very flattered to participate. We're taking Platform to do a live set and I'll be delivering a DJ set composed entirely of netaudio experimental and drone stuff. The well known canadian artist Deadbeat (and one of my favorites), aka Scott Monteith, will be opening the Territorios Digitales section of the festival, in which we are taking part. We will also have a stand there, with a selection of goodies to sell and give away, including of course, our two DVD volumes. It's available now for free download from Wandering Ear: http://wanderingear.com Based in London, audio artist Adam J Wimbush primarily works with processed field recordings, electronics and acoustic elements. His compositions are assembled from the results of numerous improvised and manipulated sonic experiments. From these, detailed extracts are chosen, and then the individual segments undergo further modification, before being edited together into a single aural environment. In keeping with his musical philosophy the master files known as ?Sound Shadows? become stimuli for further productions. A ?mobius loop? where sounds are persuaded to morph with manipulated clones of themselves or sounds generated years earlier, so in a sense they become shadows or echoes of themselves, eclipsing and orbiting each other in a re-evolving sound world. At certain stages of this process he releases this material under his solo sound project Ascsoms. Wandering Ear is a web label I co-curate with my friend Nathan Larson. WE is dedicated to releasing field recording-oriented audio from around the world. Please let us know if you're interested in releasing work. http://wanderingear.com Best, Mike From recyclingrecords at gmail.com Fri May 30 05:00:48 2008 From: recyclingrecords at gmail.com (Recycling Records) Date: Fri, 30 May 2008 10:00:48 +0100 Subject: [Microsound-announce] Recycling Records Newsletter: [rr006] ubik - Loop finding...
