"Con el 'autsaid', que es una anglo mezcla entre el onomatopeyico afuera y el acto propio de decir, se estructura este disco de Tanox que camina a pie pelado por sonidos de la electronica moderna, combinandolos con la calidez de los instrumentos de la carne y el hueso." " gerhart hauptmann, the fool in christ. for this show, i simply wanted to present some of my favorite 78's. i've included not only songs, but 78's containing fabricated field recordings (nature sounds made by people in a recording studio), and a recent recording of spoken excerpts from gerhart hauptmann's novel "the fool in christ" that describe sounds (kind of a written equivalent of audio field recordings - and an excerpt from a larger text work recording every sound in the book). the songs were chosen because of their relationship to the hauptmann quote above - and each track has singing that for one reason or another, makes me tremble. the weather sounds are pauses - stopping by the side of the road to take in the view - while the text is kind of an architectural structure that frames the older recordings. after selecting the parts, i just allowed things to collide in various ways until it felt right. the order of the songs has a bit of an upwards trajectory - beginning with a john jacob niles rendition of a lullaby (birth/earth), and ending with a song that references the moon. songs were recorded in the usa, japan, turkey, greece, egypt, and others. they explore everything from meditations and prayers, to love and wandering. the players are hillbillies, divas, hawaiian guitarists, gurus, gospel singers, the most famous male indian playback singer, and others. everything, other than the voice reading the text, comes from old worn 78rpm discs. one features weather sounds made with drums, metal, etc., while the other features bird songs made by a man (presumably with his mouth). the scratches, scars, and crackles tend to sound a bit like weather conditions as well (and in one section the sound of rain is completely inaudible beneath the similarly sounding active surface of the record itself.) i've been collecting 78's for years, but i've hardly gathered the caliber of material that would constitute a bonafide record collector's collection. for me, the gathering has become a journey of wander, leading to various destinations of wonder. i don't look for specific artists or genres (although, i have tendencies of course), as much as i kind of bump into things - during weekly 6 am visits to the flea market or late night virtual jaunts online. i generally have little idea of what i'm going to hear until i drop the needle onto the surface of the disc. often enough, a recording will be unbearably dull (what can you expect when purchases are based on a song title, artist name, or disc label art); but when there are surprises, they tend to be good - and once in awhile, mind bending. these are some of the gems. again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! framework bp17 27910 perruel france framework at talk21.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *02.03.08* *(this edition will be available online until 09.03.08)* for the geeks, here's pertinent info: john jacob niles: lulle, lullay victor, M604, album: early american ballads (3 discs), 1938 niles' arrangement, played on his own hand made dulcimer mohammed rafi: unknown song (disc label in hindi) columbia, 55403, 1963, india music by madan mohan, from the 1964 film haqeeqat josh white: strange fruit keynote, 542, 1942, usa artist and song name unknown (disc label in japanese) teichiku records, 9534-2, japan dick reinhart : girl i left behind brunswick, B1024, 1947 (recorded earlier), usa from the album (4 discs) american ballads recorded by alan lomax lale hanim: sari sachlarin victor, 26402B, turkey, probably 1930's artist and song name unknown (disc label in japanese) nipponophone - 15549A, probably 1930's omme kolsoum : Afdihi en hafeza victrola, 6-4063A, egypt Josef rosenblatt / leivi rosenblatt: oh god, our king victor, 55163B, usa, probably 1940's sri deva ram sukul: spiritual vibration chant wor recording (probably unique or test pressing), 3-4429, usa healer, president of yoga institute of america, 1930's rifat bey - Hikaz sarki kim arar Sahibinin sesi (hmv), 1224, turkey peace jublee singers, in that city info unknown (i can't find the record in this mess...) greek record, all info unknown once again i've misplaced a 78 and can't find it in this mess... Available on limited edition compact disc or delivered by high-quality MP3. THE STORY [ just 3 organs ] In the Swiss mountain town of Sils, sometime around Easter 1979, the 13 year old Frank Rothkamm played an organ for the first time. He was not in Sils to marvel at the location where Friedrich Nietzsche spent his summers, but to engage in some cross-country skiing with his family. It was there, halfway between the mountains and the frozen lake below, where he spotted a small village chapel. Intrigued, he knocked on the door 3 times and to his surprise it was open. Inside he found a reed organ which was unlocked, so he commenced to play J.S. Bach's "Toccata & Fugue in D-minor". It was cold, his hands were cold, and the old organ was out of tune. But, he was able to play the piece from memory and gladly held the last chord an extra long time. As he got back on his skis to make the descent from the mountain, a different kind of organ music was racing through his mind - impressions of idiosyncratic, differently tuned, pure "Tongestalten" (tone shapes) in a reverberated space between heaven and earth. For the next 23 years on his odyssey through Germany, Canada and the United States of America he would never play an organ keyboard again. Then on a sunny day sometime around Easter in 2002, he spotted a Yamaha Electone organ, model 205D, in a thrift store near Hollywood. Frank finally found his organ. It had been built in Japan 9 months after he played the organ for the first time in Switzerland. In an act of "Zeitgeist" his thoughts gave birth to the rise of a machine which could now materialize the impossible. It would take another 5 years, from 2003 to 2008, of playing with 6 hands, utopian-scientific composition, and the development of a new tuning system, until he was finished with his gold record. The Album [ just 3 organs ] just 3 organs (2003-2008) is 33 minutes and 33 seconds or a 3 times 3 tracks long long-player played with 3 times 2 hands and feet on the 3 times 2 manuals and 3 pedals of 3 vintage Yamaha 205D Electone home organs each assigned a primary color and tuned a micro-tonal 33 cents apart then amplified with 3 speakers for each organ suspended in mid-air in a triangle just in front of the observer with a monophonic reverberation phantom channel circling at 3 rotations per minute between all speaker triangles. ------------------------------- http://just3organs.rothkamm.com ------------------------------- ... Fans of Framework might remember my last show 'It's Great to Reverberate' an hour long excursion into the sonic properties of refrigerators, made possible by many kind 'sound contributions' from individuals all over the globe. Again the concept is quite simple, this time I'd like to focus on central heating systems as a direct opposite of cooling systems like fridges. If this project interests you and you don't mind me delicately processing your recording (if desired) I'd like you to record five to ten minuets of your central heating system, for example radiators, boilers, (preferable) electric fires etc I think it's worth mentioning that by sending me material you are giving me permission to manipulate and air on radio your sounds, you will be credited obviously and I will email you regarding on air/line dates of show or post cdr's at request. If you would like to be included in this project please send me your recording by April Please send mp3/audio files or questions to ascsoms at yahoo.co.uk I look forward to your contributions Thank You A J Wimbush aka Ascsoms/The Reverberater Obscurum per obscuris, ignotum per ignotius http://www.myspace.com/ascsoms http://www.ct-collective.com http://music.download.com/ascsoms --------------------------------- Sent from Yahoo! All the best Richard Sonic Arts Network and RadioReverb 97.2FM announce: Expo Brighton Call for Work Expo is the hub and playground of the experimental music and sound art scene in the UK and beyond. Free and open, this unique platform mobilises a national network of artists and engages with communities from all backgrounds ? placing sonic art and the people who make it in direct contact with the public. Expo steps out from traditional venues and into spaces that inspire artist and audience alike to reconsider their environments. Annually relocating, Expo traverses the country and disperses into the locality it arrives in, scattering events, happenings and sounds across the towns and cities it visits, joining together place, people and art. In the spirit of open culture and accessibility Expo has developed a unique social community ethic amongst its many contributing artists and has encouraged highly creative approaches to the staging of new work. After the success of last year?s Expo Plymouth the focus now shifts to Expo Brighton for 4-6 July 2008. This weekend of performance, exhibition, presentation, discussion and broadcast will highlight the broadest possible range of approaches and thinking surrounding the sonic arts. We welcome and encourage submissions of all kinds to add to our wide ranging programme. As well as our regular annual call for submissions of all types of sound based work festival partners Radio Reverb and Sonic Arts Network are offering two commission awards for the creation of new work by UK based artists. The deadline for submissions is the 14 March. For full details on how to submit, and commission proposal guidelines, please see: www.sonicartsnetwork.org So please, send us your stuff! The former of these, representation, has been more dominant throughout cinema?s history. The lens has in effect become a means of capturing our ?reality?, allowing us to store and later reproduce sights and sounds to be replayed as a substitute for personal memories. With the arrival of computing and it?s now widespread use within cinema we see the latter begin to take dominance. Cinema as representation is changing to cinema as simulation, creating an era more important than the transition from silent to sound or from black and white to colour. Cinema has the possibility to become a form without any necessarily inferred referent, it is known, quantifiable (pixels) and so can be modified, abstracted, constructed in numerous ways. It?s method of production can be improved, changed or even reconceived allowing it?s authors to work as never before. Cinema arrives at the end of an era with promise of a new one enabling it to become immersive, live, participative, interactive, navigable, recombinatory, distributed, networked, coded etc. On March 11th (8pm till late) Open Ear will host an event curated by Garrett Lynch (http://www.asquare.org/) at Canterbury Christ Church University Broadstairs Campus entitled Cinema presenting performances and screenings on this theme. Works will address the future of cinema and explore a diverse set of possible directions. The line-up for the evening will be as follows: - Semiconductor (http://www.semiconductorfilms.com/) - Paul Adams (http://www.myspace.com/mrpauladams) - Mick Grierson (http://www.mickgrierson.co.uk/) - Fr?d?rique Santune (http://www.saturne-feerique.net/LABO/) - John Kannenberg (http://www.johnkannenberg.com/) - Adam Chapman (http://www.adamchapmanart.com/) - 33dB (http://www.myspace.com/letageramegot) - And more :: The Venue :: Canterbury Christ Church Broadstairs Campus, situated on the east coast of Kent, England approximately 30 minutes from Canterbury, opened in 2000 with a wide selection of higher education courses. The campus is committed to the arts and cultural regeneration of the area and regularly host?s events, exhibitions and performances on site. This piece will be received in Gallery Program in Berlin. But what can stream to us, can stream to you as well. Connect to http://fmwalks.aporee.org:8000/dkfrf.m3u and listen to 'Sarajevo-Wall' (The ?ngstr?m Soundwall Reconstruction) In 1998 artist and composer Leif.e. Boman was invited to Sarajevo to create a work dealing with the destruction of war. Using rubble from houses once occupied by Serb and Bosnian families Boman constructed a wall in front of the SFOR soldiers' headquarters in Dobrinja, a suburb of Sarajevo. After the exhibit the piece, titled 'Sarajevo-Wall', was transported to Sweden where it was a part of the Stockholm Culturecapital 1998. A form of the wall has since been exhibited in South-Korea, Australia, Singapore, Japan, Morocco and Sarajevo. The sound files used in this work were originally derived by Mr. Boman from emission spectroscopy analysis of the metals and minerals found in the wall. The analysis was then converted from the frequencies of photon emission into sound files and then subjected to further processing by the artist, Leif. e. Boman. A library of these sound files were sent to Kim Cascone who then used the processing capabilities of Max/MSP to reconstruct the files into a 'sonic wall.' While no artistic statement can adequately describe the senseless violence of war Cascone's reworking of the 'Sarajevo-Wall' sound files only hopes to convey the disorientation and confusion thrust upon victims of political systems that hold little regard for human life. -- central station: zeromoon.com/rinus the latest news: rinusvanalebeek.livejournal.com myspace.com/daskleinefieldrecordingsfestival -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If you're familiar with the music of Kevin M. Krebs composing under is 833-45 alias, then I think that you'll agree that Tunguska might just be his most compelling work to date under that guise. Just the association of the names 833-45 and Tunguska is suggestive of the sonic power inherent to this album. On the one hand, we have 833-45 delivering his own formidable take on electronic music and the noise aesthetic, but along with that we have the powerful image of the well documented 1908 Tunguska Event in which a massive explosion (possibly caused by the air burst of large meteoroid or comet fragment) flattened over 2000 square kilometers of a remote region in Russia. The protagonists of the project are seven guitars, apparently identical but technically studied to obtain distinctive features: the seven instruments have been designed and hand-built with tonal chambers inside the solid body that, interacting with the string?s harmonic vibrations, create different sonic effects. Every guitar is connected to a valve-amplifier every of witch is equipped with distinctive speakers and different power. The amps are used at the maximum volume and tone bringing a feedback effect with the guitars: the strings go in auto-oscillation creating different harmonics, depending from the instrument and the tuning, and reacting with the acoustics features of the performative environment. The musician lose, therefore, the role of executor becoming only the creator of a process open to unpredictable results and closely related to the contest of performance. Every place, every contest, becomes an important variable able to influence the result: the sound is, therefore, linked more to the spatial dimension than to the temporal one witch the music is traditionally associated to. free download here: http://www.ctrlaltcanc.org have a nice day ciao punck From steiner at block4.com Mon Mar 10 05:27:00 2008 From: steiner at block4.com (Malte Steiner) Date: Mon, 10 Mar 2008 10:27:00 +0100 Subject: [Microsound-announce] Minicomputer softwaresynthesizer Message-ID: <47D4FEE4.9000600@block4.com> Version 1.1 of Minicomputer softwaresynthesizer for Linux is now available as free open source under GPL 3. For often less than EUR 5 and a few minutes with the soldering iron, a clever artist can start plugging sensors which measure light, temperature, pressure, movement and many other things right into their laptop. We will also examine building our own USB input device using the ATmega8 microcontroller. Parts and tools for these projects as well as some sample sensors will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring their own sensors and USB game controllers (joysticks, steering wheels, dancemats, toy guitars, fishing rods, etc etc) for experimentation. The Pure Data programming environment will be used to get the sensor information into the computer and map it to different parameters, ranging from MIDI to direct control of audio or video. Windows users should be aware that the possibilities for input on their systems may be more restricted. GNU/Linux and Mac OS X users should not expect any problems. Breaking of glass. Strumming on guitar strings. Gently sliding your fingers. Snap, cackle and minute pop. Reverse tape on repeat. Humming of environment. What's more, it tickles the brain. Floating in mid air. Nothing is moving and all is well. You whispered something to me last night But I can't recall the meaning or sense of it all. If I could turn myself into an ear, I'd prefer to listen to these Volume Objects with an open mind. As part-melodies come and then disappear. One wonders where beauty begins and ugliness ends. Does an image of an abandoned shed surrounded by snow mean much to you? All I recall are the black and white photographs, Gently wrecked by lack of memory and what came after. These tiny voltages are outside the human range of hearing, but can be rendered audible through the process of audification. Firstly bioelectrical signals are digitized into EDF (European Data Format) files which can be easily stored and exchanged. Then the signals contained in EDF recordings maybe extracted into wav files with custom made software. Bioelectrical files are the sound source of these compositions. A quiet listening environment or headphones recommended. "Shinkei likes to play with the perception of sound, moving on the edge of audibility, exploring the empty spaces between sounds. Usually a new project is developed with each release to experiment with different, unusual sound sources: computer simulated brainwaves, recordings of biological signals, or the snow falling over a microphone... Shinkei compositions are best listened to on headphones, or in a quiet dark space." www.bremsstrahlung-recordings.org/transradiation/trans010.php -------------------------- New Physical Release Rick Reed | Hidden Voices [For Herman Nitsch] TRANS003 Edition 50 Review - Touching Extremes The last time I listened to a Rick Reed album it was the magnificent "Dark skies at noon" on Elevator Bath. "Hidden voices" confirms those encouraging messages passing this new test with flying colours, a perfectly organized composition where instruments, ideas and aural pictures are deployed with the care that only really gifted artists can apply to their craft. The title comes from an installation in Houston dedicated to Austrian actionist Hermann Nitsch, for which Reed provided the sound sources. The instrumentation comprises a Moog synthesizer, ancient sine wave generators, shortwave and an assortment of hardware (which do not include computers). Starting with slowly modulating, oscillating frequencies the music progressively grows into a mildly dissonant mass of imperturbable electronic mourning, culminating - around minute 23 - in one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful loops that I've ever heard, a vocal moan repeating itself over and over that shoots an arrow right in the middle of the stomach in a truly breathtaking section. After that, the piece remains suspended between a complex kind of static minimalism with lot of microscopic occurrences under its thick skin and a silent ritual where everybody seems to be looking at the ground, eyes darkened by the excess of sleepless nights waiting for a revelation that will never come. The end is announced by a sudden discharge waking up from the state of trance that these gorgeous emanations threw us into. I can't stress enough the importance of composers like Reed, who thrive in semi-obscurity and without the praises given to people worthy less than half their value, continuously finding alternative interpretations of the word "emotion". ------------------------------------------------------------------------- josh russell www.josh-russell.org www.bremsstrahlung-recordings.org From junior at juniorbirdman.com Wed Mar 19 17:20:32 2008 From: junior at juniorbirdman.com (Mike Hallenbeck) Date: Wed, 19 Mar 2008 14:20:32 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Microsound-announce] Wandering Ear lives! Message-ID: <55383.204.169.52.209.1205961632.squirrel@www.juniorbirdman.com> [apologies for cross-posting] Hi folks, The Wandering Ear net label has been dormant for a while, but I'd like to wake it up. Just wanted to let you know we're looking for field recording-oriented material to release on the site as mp3 downloads. These can be straight field recordings, or sound works, video, and/ or live performances utilizing phonography to a significant degree. Here are some guidelines: 1. We'd like this material to be exclusive to the Wandering Ear site. It's fine if it's been available elsewhere on the web before, but we would like WE to be the only place it's available once we release it. If you ever want to remove it from WE, that's perfectly fine. (If any of you have offered to submit material that's already on the web and I haven't gotten back to you about it, please feel free to bug me again and I'll be happy to discuss it further.) 2. Just to be clear, we're not looking to release straight field recordings exclusively-- I want to make sure there's no confusion about that. In fact, we'd like to leave the structure open-ended in case you have some sort of concept that pushes the evelope a bit. For more info on Wandering Ear, feel free to drop by: http://wanderingear.com Thanks! ADDRESS: proposals at tunedcity.de ABOUT TUNED CITY: Tuned City - Between sound and space speculation is an exhibition and conference project planned for 1-6 July 2008 in Berlin which proposes a new evaluation of architectural spaces from the perspective of the acoustic. The project draws the traditions of critical discussion about urban space within the architecture and urban planning discourse?as well as its strategies and working methods?into the context of sound art. This expanded discussion reinforces the potential of the spatial and communicative properties of sound as a tool and means of urban practice. At the foundations of this event are artists? works and theoretical approaches which examine in a critical and sensitive way the given urban and architectural situations alongside their resulting socio-political implications, that re-use existing spaces or that conceive and open new spaces. A dialog will be built at the intersection of both disciplines which traces out the complex relations and interactions of space-sound, both presenting and testing new strategies, methods, possibilities and potentials of sound work within the artistic and applied context. TOPICS: The Built Space: - examples that illustrate phenomena, problems or possibilities in the relation of sound and architecture - usage of architecture as a space for sound and as an instrument The Public Space: - relation of sound and city - situated sonic practices, site-specific sound awareness - sound as a system of social communication, division and defense - mobile sound The Imaginary / Speculative Space: - hearing-space - virtual acoustic spaces - sound space in relation to human anatomy, memory and psyche - mechanics and principles of translating sound into architecture and vice versa PRODUCTION TEAM: Carsten Stabenow Gesine Pagels Carsten Seiffarth Derek Holzer Anke Eckardt Anne Kockelkorn CONTACT: garage Kastanienallee 73 10435 Berlin www.tunedcity.de email: tc at tunedcity.de Tel.: 0049 / 30 / 44052612 Fax: 0049 / 30 / 44357415 -- derek holzer ::: http://www.umatic.nl ::: http://blog.myspace.com/macumbista ---Oblique Strategy # 13: "Are there sections? Once you enter the theater and the show begins the goal is to be transported into the fantasy of another or others. Somehow between entering the theater and the start of the show you prepare yourself to abandon present concerns and willfully enter another's world. Two sound installations by Thom Blum, written in conjunction with Deborah Slater Dance Theater's The Desire Line, will be presented along the 100 yard-long hallway to Cowell Theater in Fort Mason, San Francisco. The entry installation The Long Haul ushers you from the outside world into the world of theater, transporting you from everyday sounds to the abstractions of the everyday that await you. Each piece is a response to an invitation. The source sounds are produced using location recordings and manipulated vinyl, which are simply processed through his collection of foot pedals & mixing desk, and then assembled on screen. Anamnesis - refers to the ability of sound to trigger mental images in our minds eye. Each new image is unique to each of us - and they are all uniquely framed within the evocative music. They wrote me a cool blurb too: The suburbs of Sydney are no place for the feint-hearted, if Kate Carr's version of them is anything to go by. There is menace creeping below the lethargy, a disjointed existence punctuated by random bursts of slow electricity. The mind of a composer is slowly sublimated to their environment. Carr's usual blend of field recordings is here spliced with more 'musical' interludes to foreboding effect. _________________________________________________________________ It's simple! You might expect a name like that for some Einst?rzende Neubauten-like industrial act, but here that's not the case. Okay, at some times Machinefabriek's music might sound harsch and abrassive, but industrial, no. My music is more about combining distorted, raw sounds with subtle melodies and stillness. References are Tim Hecker, Fennesz, Tarentel and Stars of the Lid. Early 2006 the Cypriotic label Lampse issued my first full lenth 'Marijn'. It got great review in The Wire and Pitchforkmedia. This release was preceded (and followed) by numerous self released 3-inch cdr's. A compilation of those was released as the double cd 'Weleer', in 2007. In the meantime there was a full length on Root Strata ('Slaapzucht'), and a 7-inch single on Type ('Lenteliedjes'). Collaborations with Leo Fabriek (Julie Mittens), Wouter van Veldhoven and Mariska Baars (Soccer Committee) and Jeroen Vandesande also led to cd-releases. In july I released a double cd-set with artist remixing my track 'Stofstuk'. I was lucky to have (amongst others) Peter Rehberg, Carsten Nicolai (Alva Noto), Mitchell Akiyama, Greg Haines, Lesser, Steinbruchel, Xela and Frans de Waard (Freiband) taken part in this project.. The pieces for this recording were made just a while after the recording of 'Marijn' was finished. Despite the fact most other 'Mort Aux Vaches' releases are live documents, this one is recorded at home, before having it played by Berry Kamer from the VPRO, on Dutch radio. This time I decided to limit myself by using mainly the guitar and laptop. And a recordplayer on one track. I roughly recorded some parts and chopped it un on the computer. That's when the compositions came to life. It's a questioning of listening, and the process itself will dictate the way to go. I tried to make a patient record. A record that slowly pulls you in. Ironically a big influence was the Mort Aux Vaches cd by Oren Ambarchie. For me that's the ultimate statement in 'guitar-and-electronics-minimalism'. Bathyale means 'the part of the sea between 200 and 1000 meters where no sunlight comes through'. I wanted to do something with water, 'cause that's what i kept thinking of when making and listening to the music. The pieces have a fluidity, but at times they are pretty dark and 'crackly'." Rutger Zuydervelt (Arnhem, The Netherlands) Vital review: "It's been a while since we last heard from Staalplaat as a label and the two releases that are now 'new' in the Mort Aux Vaches series, are in fact recorded some time ago. The Refat one in 2006 and Machinefabriek is a bit hard to tell. The cover is made with stamps but on my copy it's a bit hard to read. But it's also been on the shelf for some time, which in the case of Machinefabriek is a bummer.. Rutger Zuydervelt released so much music in the past three years that we got a pretty clear idea about how he developed in that period, but it's a bit hard to say where his Mort Aux Vaches will fit in. We hear him play guitar, more than he does these days, but throughout his carefully created atmospheric music is already present here. It moves away from the previous released live recording in that sense that they are less noise based and forecasts his recent music. However things are less complex around here, and works on a more straight forward level. The emphasis lies on the guitar, which shows Zuydervelt here to be a good student of Oren Ambarchi, with perhaps a bit more effects at his disposal. Minimal, atmospheric: it's all there yet not as refined as in much of his later work." (FDW) Artist: Mahmoud Refat Titel: Mort Aux Vaches Label: Mort Aux Vaches Cat#: 16468 Worldwide, exclusively distributed by Staalplaat Vital review: "Mahmoud Refat is from Egypt, who previously released on Leerraum. He's not a player of traditional instruments, but is a 'normal' (??) artist with sound installations, field recordings - following a career in funk/acid jazz/experimental music. I must say I had no expectations whatsoever. I can't say I'm disappointed. The whole notion that it should be ethnic (inspired) is of course bull shit. It proofs that whatever we call microsound (for the lack of any better term) is much more a global thing that we knew. Refat plays laptop music, using sounds of whatever field nearby or far away, but he adds low humming beats - think Ikeda or Noto but on a much more subdued level - which work well as a creepy undercurrent for the music. The rhythmical notion he puts on makes this perhaps more clicks 'n cuts (for the lack of any better term) than plain microsound, but the addition of field recordings is certainly a refreshing look on the subject matter. Meelkop meets Noto, Chartier meet Pan Sonic - if you catch my fantasy running wild on the subject. For me an entirely new artist, but certainly someone to watch for the future."
