Hi list just wanted to point you all to our new net release featuring  
among others Gail Priest, Iris Garrelfs and Douglas Benford, John  
Kannenberg and Derek Morton.

Explorations in Sound, Vol 3: Music Of Sound is the a compilation of  
sound works inspired by the tones, drones and rhythms of everyday  
life. Drawing on the ideas of Pierre Schaeffers' Musique Concr?te  
movement, contributing artists were invited to respond to the natural  
tones and rhythms in raw acoustic or constructed sound and field  
recordings. Inherent musical and rhythmic motifs were then developed  
through live performance, orchestration, or studio manipulation.

What results is an innovative and eclectic set of tracks from invited  
international artists known for their work in this field. It is the  
fourth in the Furthernoise.org series of high quality mp3 net releases  
free to download from the site with folding printed sleeve.

O festival Sonic Scope nasceu em Setembro de 2001 a partir de uma iniciativa
particular de dois artistas sonoros e visuais, Nuno Moita e Jo?o Vicente,
que fundaram posteriormente a plataforma editorial Grain of Sound. O artista
multidisciplinar Andr? Gon?alves juntou-se ? equipa organizadora do festival
em 2002. O Sonic Scope tem vindo a apresentar anualmente um conjunto de
m?sicos e artistas sonoros intimamente ligados ? m?sica experimental e
improvisada. A primeira edi??o realizou-se no Pal?cio Marim Olh?o com o
apoio do Pelouro da Juventude da C?mara Municipal de Lisboa e da Fonoteca
Municipal de Lisboa. As seis edi??es seguintes conheceram outros palcos,
sempre em Lisboa: Galeria ZDB (2002); Gare Mar?tima de Alc?ntara (2003);
Fonoteca Municipal de Lisboa (2004, 2005, 2006); Est?dio da Bomba Suicida
(2007). O Sonic Scope regressa agora ? Fonoteca Municipal de Lisboa para a
edi??o de 2008.

Tuned City events, now on in Berlin, Germany, I present ongoing work
on the Found Tape Exhibition ( http://foundtapes.soundblog.net ) at
"CAKE & COFFEE", daily, in the afternoons, from 2 till 5 july, in the
Weserstra?e 56 in Neuk?lln (U-Bahn: Rathaus Neuk?lln).

Also at "CAKE & COFFEE" on saturday 5 july: "DKFRF INTIEM", with performances 
and presentations by Soinumapa, PBP8, myself and guests ...
We start at 17h ... Hope to see you there.

Hope you're well. Info follows on stuff going on in Portland and
cyberspace both. You might be new to this list; just give a holler if you

THINGS I'VE SAID IN MY SLEEP
My new headphone installation "Things I've Said in My Sleep" will be
featured in the group exhibition "Overkill #2". The piece features
vocalizations of my own transcribed sleeptalk, as well as manipulations of
a music box and clinking glasses, plus a binaural recording of Tompkins
Square Park in NYC.

The show opens July 4th at Jace Gace, Portland OR's premier purveyor of
Belgian waffles, ales, and art (the art's not necessarily Belgian, but the
waffles and ales are). Runs until July 27th. Jace Gace is at 2045 SE
Belmont.

FEATHERWEIGHT
Chalres Gillett asked me to submit some music for a collaboration in
absentia with the Minneapolis improvisational collective Brown Rainbow. I
recorded myself whistling, took the sounds apart and put them back
together again. I call the the resulting composition "Featherweight",
though it's assembled using randomly overlapping layers of playback and
thus only one of countless possible iterations of the piece.

absentia) Andrew Lafkas improvising with the piece, which they hadn't

CD . 60? Project  - The Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival is  
celebrating the 60th anniversary of musique concrete and the  
pioneering work of Pierre Schaeffer by commissioning 60? by Mathew  
Adkins. This highly exciting and adventurous work will involve the  
contribution of sound materials by 60 composers from around the world.  
We would like to invite you to be one of the participating composers.  
artists include: AGF, Fran?ois Bayle, Mira Calix, Richard Chartier,  
Francis Dhomont, Lawrence English, Erikm,	Christian Fennesz, Tim  
Hecker	, Christina Kubisch, Francisco L?pez, Stephan Mathieu, Steve  
Roden, Scanner, Janek Schaefer, Conrad Schnitzler, Sogar, Terre  
Thaemlitz, David Toop and many more. The concept behind the project is  
ingenious. Rather than celebrating Schaeffer's achievements through  
curating a concert of historical works, Adkins and the hcmf Artistic  
Director Graham McKenzie have decided to invite 60 sound artists and  
composers to each contribute 60 sounds. Each of these sounds will then  
be made available to all of the participants who will then create  
sound fragments based on this material. This material will then be  
mixed by Adkins in the studios of INA-GRM in July 2008. The work will  
be premiered on 28th November 2008 at the Huddersfield Contemporary  
Music Festival. The premiere will also mark the release of the work on

"This two track opus is a truly epic immersion into the vast
imaginations of Bible and Henry. The confident, effortless development
of broken piano treatment at Vryashn's epicenter bring to mind the
sublime energy of Harold Budd and Brian Eno. The unique talents of the
constantly evolving Bible and Henry are on full display with Vryashn.
For one, the well honed laptopist duo turn here to piano as their main
medium.

While the warmth, spacious piano movements of ambient pioneers Harold
Budd and Brian Eno is often drawn upon for inspiration by other
artists, few are able to use the instrument in ways heard on Vryashn.

Rather than sparse notes played between silences, Bible and Henry use
the piano as a launching pad into a sprawling world of minimal piano
motifs that build tension and release given a depth through subtle
laptop treatments.

Vryashn is arguably a definitive statement of Bible and Henry's
talents as composers on the cutting edge of an overflowing and
arguably oversampled electronic scene.

Beyond synthetic 'soundscapes' or 'interesting textures' Vryashn

sheer audio, video and hardware pluggability, patching and piping. Pd
provides the basis for all manner of audiovisual performance and
trans-media installation, as well as satisfying the artistic quest for
heady experimentation and improvisation. Yet few artists take the time
to master a solid foundation in this graphical programming
environment.

The three day You've got pluggability workshop aims to provide a firm
grounding and clear overview of the varied possibilities and paths
offered by Pure Data. The first day will introduce Pd and quickly move
on to how to create patches which create sounds and noises. The second
day will look further at sound, particularly how to work with sampled
audio, and will introduce the GEM library for working with live and
recorded video. The third day will start with a look at the HID (Human
Interface Device) system for getting sensor input into Pd, and venture
into to using this input to control the audio and video patches which
the participants have already created. No previous experience is
necessary to take this workshop.

This PD workshop will be roughly based on the Pure Data FLOSS Manual,
written by Derek Holzer, Luka Princic, Adam Hyde and contributors from

Participants should bring their own laptop running GNU/Linux, Mac OS X or
Windows, and with Pure Data Extended installed from:

In the entire history of cinema there has never been a director, who has made such a dramatic stand for the human spirit as he did. Today, when cinema seems to have drowned in a sea of glamorized triviality, when human relationships on screen have been reduced to sexual intrigue or sloppy sentimentality, and baseness rules the day - this man appears as a lone warrior standing in the midst of this cinematic catastrophe, holding up the banner for human spirituality.The Genius of modern Russian cinema - hailed by Ingmar Bergman as "the most important director of our time" - died an exile in Paris in December 1986.

After 22 years, passed from that year we decided to ask Kim Cascone, Astro, Violet, 833-45, Kenneth Kirschner, Astrowind, Pink Twins, Alva Noto, Nobukazu Takemura and Nikita Golyshev what do they think about Tarkovsky's phenomenon.     'Crooked River, 1st and 3rd persons is a 48-hour recording and
    broadcasting project that re-engages the multiple legacies of the
    Cuyahoga River - its industrial fires, marine life losses,
    engineers' ambitions, immigrant dreams, serpentine navigations -
    with its contemporary forms of agency. The river's complex template
    as an industrial, cultural and natural waterway is re-inscribed as a
    sonic wayfinding system through the city grid of downtown Cleveland
    and the venue of Ingenuity Festival 2008. This project in first and
    third person intertwines macro forces and events of this dynamic
    waterway with the performative dimensions of the festival,
    harnessing nimble recording and broadcasting technologies to enable
    new methods of dialogue. Participants encounter these dynamic flows

    interactive landmarking, and collectively embody - and co-emerge

Juan Parra Cancino (b. 1979) 

Composer, Improviser, Live Electronics Performer and Guitar player. 
Studied Composition in the Catholic University of Chile and Sonology 
at The Royal Conservatory of The Hague (NL). 
His Compositions, that include pure electronic and electro acoustic 
mixed media with solo instruments and ensembles have been performed 
in Europe, North and South America in festivals and have been 
selected and awarded at the Bourges Electroacoustic Music Competition 
of 2003 and 2004. 
As a guitar player he has participated in several courses of Guitar 
Craft, a school founded by Robert Fripp, becoming part of various 
related guitar ensembles such as the Berlin Guitar Ensemble, the 
Buenos Aires Guitar Ensemble and The League of Crafty Guitarists. 

He is currently a PhD candidate of the Leiden University in Holland 
and the Orpheus Institute in Gent with the research project "Towards 
a Performance Practice in Computer Music", supported by the Prins 
Bernhard Cultuur Fonds, and the Institute of Sonology of the Royal 
Conservatory in The Hague.

Daisuke ISHIDA (b.1980,TOKYO) 

Daisuke Ishida is working in the field of Sound-Art and NewMedia-Art 
based in Berlin Germany. Started his activities in 2000. 
His sound works seek to realize synthesized unnatural sound space, 
beyond the natural understanding of sound, explore and emphasize the 
contraries ?minimum - maximum?, ?rhythmic - arhythmic?, ?harmony - 
cacophony?, ?signal - noise?, ?melodiousness - unmelodiousness? and 
?silence - audible moment?, in the context of electro-acoustic music, 
computer music, experimental music and noise music after the time of 
artists such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis, John Cage and 
Yasunao Tone, by using technologies or methods such as Real Time 
Digital Signal Processing, Granular Synthesis, Spectral Morphology and 
Fast Fourier Transformation. 
Participated MobLab: Japanese-German media camp 2005. He is a member 
of The SINE WAVE ORCHESTRA and The SINE WAVE QUARTET founded in 2002 
with Ken Furudate, Kazuhiro Jo and Mizuki Noguchi, received Honorary 
Mention in Digital Music category on ARS Electronica 2004.

Yutaka Makino is an artist and researcher. His research seeks to 
integrate the historic precedents of electronic music and 
contemporary techniques in architecture towards new materiality, 
involving research in microsound synthesis, spatial perception, form-

His works have been recognized/performed at numerous festivals and 
competitions internationally including the MusikTriennale Cologne 
(Germany), the Bourges International Competitions of Electroacoustic 
Music and Sound Art (France), Bucharest Youth Biannual (Romania), 
the International Gaudeamus Music Week (The Netherlands), STRP 
Festival (The Netherlands) and Seoul International Computer Music 
Festival (South Korea) among others. He has recently won the Prix 
Ton Bruynel 2007 for his composition Cryosphere. With Takuro Mizuta 
Lippit of STEIM, he frequently performs as Audile. 
He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

TONEWHEELS is an experiment in converting graphical imagery to sound,
inspired by some of the pioneering 20th Century electronic music
inventions. Transparent tonewheels with repeating patterns are spun over
light-sensitive electronic circuitry to produce sound. This all-analog
set is performed entirely live without the use of computers, using only
overhead projectors as light source, performance interface and audience
display. In this way, TONEWHEELS aims to open up the "black box" of
electronic music and video by exposing the working processes of the
performance for the audience to see.

Up until now, TONEWHEELS has been realized as a live performance or a
workshop (at WAVES, Dortmund, May 2008). However, for Access Space,
Holzer has decided to create a playable installation based on these
simple optoelectronic principles. Users of Access Space will be invited
to produce patterns for the spinning tonewheels as well as graphical
scores to be projected on the instrument in order to play it.

The inspiration for this installation comes from the ANS synthesizer.
The ANS is a pioneering electronic music instrument conceived and built
by Evgeny Murzin in the Soviet Union during the late 1950's. It is also
one of the first experiments in direct graphical composition. To compose
with the ANS, the user scratches lines through the opaque black covering
on a glass plate. Light shines through these lines as the plate passes
through the machine, and activates photocells inside it. Lines at the
bottom of the plate produce low tones, while lines at the top of the
plate produce high tones.

The only existing ANS is installed in the Theremin Center in Moscow.
Soviet composers such as Edward Artemyev used the ANS to record the
soundtracks for Tarkovsky's "Stalker" and "Solaris", and more recently
the English group Coil released a triple CD realized on the instrument.
Outside Moscow, the legacy of the ANS lives on largely in the software
world. Any kind of software which allows the user to "draw" or "paint"
with sound, such as the UPIC softwares developed by Iannis Xenakis at
IRCAM, IanniX, HighC or the MetaSynth software, owes a great deal to the
ANS.

The completed TONEWHEELS instrument (housed in a beautiful old wooden
Grandfather Clock cabinet) as well as the user-designed wheels and
scores will be presented on Friday, 1 August 2008 at Access Space, 1
Sidney Street, Sheffield UK. Many thanks to Jake Harries, Access Space
and Andrei Smirnov for their support and assistance with this project.

We used a flute, a toy piano, a Casio keyboard, an acoustic guitar and an ukulele on sunday june 15th at La Veilleuse; at the franco-korean Espace Han-Seine, on friday june 22nd, there were a double bass, a piano, and - again - Rebus's toy piano. I think I never ever before heard nor played anything as ephemeral.

The enigmatic Taku Unami is long associated with Tokyo's contemporary  
improvising scene,
and having honed his own aesthetic in the city's ultra-quiet Off-Site  
improvisation meetings,
Unami has released several provocative recordings on his own Hibari  
label.

Ko Ishikawa is a professional "Sho" (Japanese bamboo mouth organ)  
player and is a member of the
Gagaku ensemble "Reigakusha". He was born in Tokyo in 1963 and studied  
Sho and Gagaku music
with huge masters like Mayumi Miyata.

Masahiko Okura started performing in public venues around Tokyo in  
1994, after joining the techno-noise band
Dub Sonic Warrior. At about the same time he also formed the band Sun  
King with Tadahiko Kanai (sax),
Takashi Takeoka (bass) and Tadashi Matsumoto (drums). He uses alto  
saxophone, bass clarinet and tubes in
his work both as a solo artist and as a collaborator with other  
artists of improvised music.

Axel Dorner (Berlin) is a trumpet player with a panoramic perspective.  
In his hands, it can sing with all the
glorious history jazz has invested in it. Or, alternatively, it can be  
reduced to an improvisor's "objet trouv?" -
twisted clumb of clumber's refuse, metal tube of given length with  
several holes and plugs given over to
variances in hissing and whistling."

Klaus Filip (Viena), sinewave wizzard, lloopp mentor and enormous  
digital programmer, long time
colaborator of toshimaru nakamura or radu malfati.

Madison, Wisconsin's Thomas Wincek takes a break here from his other  
musical projects (All Tiny Creatures, Collections of Colonies of  
Bees, and Emotional Joystick) to explore the practice of extended  
technique. As Wincek discusses in the release's liner notes, the term  
is used here to refer not only to traditional physical techniques  
(e.g. hitting strings with chopsticks instead of plectrums) but also  
digital processing techniques. While pure experimentation drives the  
conceptual nature of the project, the resulting tracks are gorgeously  
melodic, straddling a fine line between composition and improvisation.

so, my sincere apologies for the lack of time references in this

the other announcement i have to make is that *framework will be taking 
a well-deserved vacation* for the month of august - there is one more 
show, on august the 3rd, which will be *james wyness* and *duncan 
whitley*'s edition of /*framework:afield*/, constructed from recordings 
made over the last few years during seville's /semana santa/ (holy 
week).  then we'll be relaxing in the sun (yeah, right) until early 
september - but fear not!  i wouldn't leave you with no ear-candy!  a 
series of repeats of immense historical interest has been arranged, 
taking us back in time in the framework tardis, beginning, the first 
week, in 2006, and ending later in the month all the way back in 2002 
(did they even have electricity back then?).  the original dates will be 
on the website, so you can flip back though the yellowing pages of the 
the playlist archive and see which composers were already born by then.

Masahiko Okura started performing in public venues around Tokyo in 1994,
after joining the techno-noise band
Dub Sonic Warrior. At about the same time he also formed the band Sun King
with Tadahiko Kanai (sax),
Takashi Takeoka (bass) and Tadashi Matsumoto (drums). He uses alto
saxophone, bass clarinet and tubes in
his work both as a solo artist and as a collaborator with other artists of
improvised music.

Axel Dorner (Berlin) is a trumpet player with a panoramic perspective. In
his hands, it can sing with all the
glorious history jazz has invested in it. Or, alternatively, it can be
reduced to an improvisor's "objet trouv?" -
twisted clumb of clumber's refuse, metal tube of given length with several
holes and plugs given over to
variances in hissing and whistling."

Klaus Filip (Viena), sinewave wizzard, lloopp mentor and enormous digital
programmer, long time
colaborator of toshimaru nakamura or radu malfati.

*Pedro Boavida* began performing live in 2004 with we shall say only the
leaves and iff with Alberto Arruda. Lately he has been working on the
intersection between hacked, diy devices and computer programming for
improvisation and composition.

PUNCK - Piallassa (red desert chronicles) out now!

Sound artist , field recordist , photographer and lo fi
video maker,
Punck is the pseudonym chosen by Adriano Zanni, for his
experimental
music project. He creates his sound canvas manipulating many
different
kinds of acoustic, concrete and natural sources with audio
editors and
softwares. He participated to many experimental music
festivals in
Italy and nowadays he keeps to privilege live activities.
During his
sets he uses laptop, portable CD players, various
objects,field
recordings and selfmade videoclips. Among his many
collateral
activities, we can't help to mention that he's owner of
Ctrl+Alt+Canc,
a net-label dedicated to experimental music of all kinds
that has
released many works of artists such as Logoplasm, Sawako,
Ernesto
Rodrigues, Ovo, Sinistri and many others.




After releasing music on such great labels like Afe Records,
Setola di
Maiale and Creative Sources, Piallassa (red desert
chronicles) is his
first record for Boring Machines and his most personal and
romantic to
date. It's a dedication to the Piallassa valley, where he
was born in
1964, the same year and place where Michelangelo Antonioni
set his
famous movie Red Desert. The record is a single track of
field
recordings, electronic treatments, acoustic guitars (by Aldo
Becca)
and a sample from the movie itself.
