The audio player is once again stacked full of new sounds, so sit back and read, listen or watch the new years issue of Furthernoise.org. "13 Tracks - Gintas K" (review) I first became aware of Gintas K when when we both contributed remixes to Jody Roses' Singing Bridges album a few years ago and being impressed with his contribution, I have kept up his exploits ever since. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=219 review by Roger Mills "Dithernoise 2007" (review) Dithernoise (aka Simon Longo) is a sound artist based in London who has been experimenting with electronic music since the end of the 1980s, with several recordings released on experimental labels. Dithernoise 2007 features several works from the artist's installations and new releases. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=230 review by Alex Young "Heart Cell Memory - Devin Sarno & G.E. Stinson" (review) An exploration of low-frequency drones, tones and textures, featuring electric guitar, electric bass and "implements" as the sound sources. Unlike some drone recordings, the volume and intensity varies dramatically throughout the recording, which is best appreciated under direct listening rather than in the background. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=227 review by Bill Binkelman "Hollar, Rashaya and Resistance Cruisers - Matt Weston" (review) Hollar, Rashaya, and Resistance Cruisers are three releases by Matt Weston on the newish 7272Music label. As a solo percussionist, he has collaborated with improvisors such as Arthur Brooks, Bill Dixon, Kevin Drumm, Paul Flaherty, Charles Gayle, Milford Graves, Le Quan Ninh, Bob Marsh, Jim O'Rourke, William Paker and Ken Vandermark and Jack Wright. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=224 review by Derek Morton "klage - Thanos Chrysakis" (review) With Klage, composer and vibraphonist Thanos Chrysakis has launched his own CD label with a collection of nine wandering atmospherics, sonic environments of uncertain origins, some of which retain performative aspects that reveal his training as a percussionist, and some of which spring entirely from his imagination. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=225 review by Caleb Deupree "Lukas Simonis & Takayuki Kawabata" (review) The music on Lukas Simonis' latest release, News, consists of two cello?s played by Nina Hitz and Kumi Kondo, the enigmatic voice of Miki Sugiura and Mr Simonis on guitar, not that it sounds like a guitar very often. Apparently, although the ensemble was given musical pointers by the composer, the tracks are predominately 'spur of the moment' stuff. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=223 review by Mark Francombe "mwvm - Rotations" (review) The field of guitar atmospherics, of treated tones and delay-drizzled drones, has become increasingly populous. There?s a lineage here traceable from Fripp&Eno's early 70s proto-ambience through Durutti's echoplex-doodlings to MBV's shoegaze-haze at either end of the 80s. But it's the Kranky clan whose legacy has most fuelled the current crop, among whom find mwvm... http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=221 review by Alan Lockett "Ocean Fire - Ryuichi Sakamoto and Christopher Willits" (review) Ocean Fire expends more energy than it recycles, and it seeks an evolution rather than a transfusion of the respective backgrounds of composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and musician and multimedia artist Christopher Willits. Sakamoto is the elder of the two - a founding member of Yellow Magic Orchestra, he has provided scores for over twenty films. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=226 review by Max Schaefer "Sillage - Brendan Murray & Seth Nehil" (review) Sillage stands as a near impenetrable domain. Its interplanetary baubles and esoteric tinsel set in motion a search for minute shifts in the texture of sound, changing relationships between chance and composition, and in so doing, emphasize the importance of listening as an all-consuming mode of awareness. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=229 review by Max Schaefer "Tacet - Luca Formentini" (review) As all symphonic players will testify, coming across Tacet (Latin for silent) in your score is often a welcome respite from playing, a chance to recover breath and to enjoy a momentary space between your parts. It is a time to soak up the collective sound environment and feel the music, while counting down to your next contribution. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=220 review by Roger Mills "The Seasons Unfold Sampler - Tor Lundvall" (review) Tor Lundvall has been producing "paintings with sound" for some time. But not till last album Empty City did his distinctive crepuscular song-scapes appear on the radar. "The Seasons Unfold" - Sampler trails a 4CD-set assemblage of early works conceived as a quadriptych of the four seasons. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=222 review by Alan Lockett Roger Mills Editor, Furthernoise to unsubscribe please go to http://www.furthernoise.org/unsubscribe.php?ID= From kim at anechoicmedia.com Sun Feb 3 12:02:39 2008 From: kim at anechoicmedia.com (Kim Cascone) Date: Sun, 3 Feb 2008 09:02:39 -0800 Subject: [Microsound-announce] Fwd: New solar / magnetic sound art on You Tube... [E] The original April 2007 issue of eContact! 9.3 was recently translated and is now a completely bilingual issue. We invite you to return to this issue to either catch up on articles you haven't read yet, or simply for a re-reading of this substantial issue of great value to the larger electroacoustic community. The present set of articles intends to follow up on the paper "Mastering in Electroacoustics," published in 2002. As the practice of mastering in the field of electroacoustics was still in an embryonic state at the time, this initial document aimed both to inform electroacousticians of the realities of mastering and to convince them of the urgent need to adopt a certain professionalism in their production methods. From this point of view, this inaugural step was clearly pertinent: it has proven necessary today to present, almost five years later, an overview or "state of affairs" of the now relatively concrete relations between electroacoustics and mastering. What aspects of the contemporary situation in fact constitute justification for such a project? Translations by jef chippewa and Kamen Zenov. THANK YOU! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ /*framework*/ - phonography / field recording; contextual and decontextualized sound activity presented by patrick mcginley this week's edition of */framework:afield/* was produced as a collaboration between japanese sound artist *rie nakajima*, london-based piano tuner *ken bodden*, and yours truly. it is based on an installation nakajima made using recordings of bodden at work - she followed him to several jobs, made close up recordings of the tuning process, and played the recordings back, one per speaker, simultaneously in a single room. the ensuing collage, far from cacophonous as one would expect, follows a beautiful progression of harmonics and crescendos, and creates surprising tonal patterns as bodden makes his way through the scale. when i heard the piece, i knew it needed to be broadcast. for the radio we took the project one step further, conducting a series of interviews with bodden in which he describes in detail the tuning process (much of which, to the uninitiated, is difficultly understood, but fascinating in its complexity), his history as a tuner, and his interest in nakajima's project, while nakajima herself describes her conception of the piece, and her initial fascination when she was made aware of the commonality of blind piano tuners in the uk. this is really a fascinating piece - if you don't listen to the show regularly, here's a good place to start. again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! framework bp17 27910 perruel france framework at talk21.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ framework intro submissions: 1) take yourself and a recording device to a location of your choice 2) record for AT LEAST one minute before you - 3) read aloud the following text: *welcome to framework.* *framework is a show consecrated to field recording, and its use in composition. field recording, phonography, the art of sound hunting; open your ears and listen!* 4) continue your recording for AT LEAST two minutes after you have finished speaking 5) send the recording on any format to the above address, or as an mp3 via email thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ drop a note to framework at talk21.com to be removed from this mailing list -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As a performer, Daniell utilizes acoustic, electric, and pedal steel guitar along with a variety of electronics. He has worked for over a decade as a member of the improvising blues-drone trio San Agustin, along with many other collaborators through the years, including Loren Connors, Rhys Chatham, Tim Barnes, Ateleia, Jeph Jerman, Thurston Moore, Sean Meehan, Tomas Korber, Greg Davis and Jonathan Kane, and currently works in an ongoing duo with Douglas McCombs (Brokeback, Tortoise). Daniell's compositional work utilizes displaced and abstracted field recordings juxtaposed with manipulated acoustic instruments and sounds of purely electronic origin, with great attention to sonic detail and aural depth-of-field, as captured in two solo albums, 2002's sem (Antiopic) and 2006's Coastal (Xeric/Table of the Elements). Recent compositions have incorporated a variety of acoustic instruments in larger ensemble settings. One such work, Sunfish (for twelve to fifteen musicians), was recently performed at the Fugue State Festival in Chicago (June 2007) and the X Avant Festival in Toronto (September 2007). This SoundBlog edition's podcast consists in a special 30 minutes 'Stockhausen on dictaphone' reportage around three large audio extracts taken from this historic recording, in which Stockhausen, among other things elaborates on the process of composing his thirteenth piano piece (Lucifer's Dream), on the nature of time, on pop music, on what's wrong with collage, and on the 'terrible decadence' of western culture, and western music in particular ... THANK YOU! framework - phonography / field recording; contextual and decontextualized sound activity presented by patrick mcginley a long playlist this week, featuring quite a mix of new and old sounds - we looked back at two past favorites this week, with tracks from coelacanth (jim haynes' and loren chasse's collaborative project) and illusion of safety. we also heard a few more tracks from michael prime's latest release, 'borneo', a sampling of a very new direction for sawako on her recent 'madoromi' release, a new track by mark schreiber (when will he have a proper release, we wonder...), a series of field recordings from france and china by aymeric de tapol, and a recent mp3 release by kim cascone. in the midst of all this was an interesting project that came our way from the royal university college of fine arts in stockholm sweden - on the initiative of professor carl michael von hausswolff, six students (amongst which i see the name of one mathias josefson, aka moljebka pvlse) and their professor each recorded a single lock groove, which were released as one side of a 7" record. here we hear the 2nd side - a mix of all 7 tracks by professor micki himself. for specific information and ordering info have a look at the website, listed in the playlist below. again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest curated series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! framework bp17 27910 perruel france framework at talk21.com 10.02.08 (this edition will be available online until 17.02.08) (start - finish / artist / track / album / label) 00:00 - 04:04 / sveta bogomolova / framework intro http://art.tartu.ee/~sveeta 02:41 - 05:19 / aymeric de tapol / d'usine en usine, 2006, pekin / field recordings / - http://a.detapol.free.fr 03:10 - 11:36 / michael prime / tongkat ali / borneo / mycophile [no website into available] 07:07 - 14:44 / mark schreiber / terrain marker / - / - [no website into available] 11:38 - 21:01 / aymeric de tapol / land blaster, 2007, strasbourg / field recordings / - http://a.detapol.free.fr 14:40 - 21:18 / kim cascone / grayscape / the astrum argentum / musica excentrica http://www.anechoicmedia.com, http://www.netaudio.ru/musica-excentrica 18:58 - 22:45 / sawako / it's not on purpose / madoromi / anticipate http://www.troncolon.com, http://anticipaterecordings.com 21:10 - 27:20 / michael prime / montane forest / borneo / mycophile [no website into available] 21:50 - 25:37 / sawako / appled soapbox / madoromi / anticipate http://www.troncolon.com, http://anticipaterecordings.com 25:07 - 32:04 / kim cascone / brown fox / the astrum argentum / musica excentrica http://www.anechoicmedia.com, http://www.netaudio.ru/musica-excentrica 28:40 - 32:40 / c.m. von hausswolff / mix / kkh1 lock grooves / royal records http://www.kkh.se/royalrecords 29:45 - 52:53 / illusion of safety / lilt / of & the / soleilmoon http://www.illusionofsafety.com, http://www.soleilmoon.com 33:18 - 51:33 / coelacanth / the hexactinellidae / the glass sponge / 23five http://www.helenscarsdale.com/coelacanth, http://www.23five.org 48:16 - 51:38 / sawako / kira kira / madoromi / anticipate http://www.troncolon.com, http://anticipaterecordings.com 50:27 - 53:42 / sawako / passepass / madoromi / anticipate http://www.troncolon.com, http://anticipaterecordings.com 53:13 - 55:32 / aymeric de tapol / cloche depuis la tour zorg, 2006, strasbourg / field recordings / - http://a.detapol.free.fr 53:53 - 56:26 / kim cascone / ocean overhead / the astrum argentum / musica excentrica http://www.anechoicmedia.com, http://www.netaudio.ru/musica-excentrica 54:59 - 56:40 / aymeric de tapol / un college a pekin, 2006, pekin / field recordings / - http://a.detapol.free.fr 56:12 - 58:06 / aymeric de tapol / jardin botanique, 2006, strasbourg / field recordings / - http://a.detapol.free.fr 57:34 - 59:30 / kim cascone / blue flourescent / the astrum argentum / musica excentrica http://www.anechoicmedia.com, http://www.netaudio.ru/musica-excentrica framework intro submissions: 1) take yourself and a recording device to a location of your choice 2) record for AT LEAST one minute before you - 3) read aloud the following text: welcome to framework. framework is a show consecrated to field recording, and its use in composition. field recording, phonography, the art of sound hunting; open your ears and listen! 4) continue your recording for AT LEAST two minutes after you have finished speaking 5) send the recording on any format to the above address, or as an mp3 via email thanks! drop a note to framework at talk21.com to be removed from this mailing list -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... These artists are engaged in divergent practice and have innovative approaches to the development of labels, methods of music dissemination and publishing, critical writing and curatorial practice. New Aesthetics in Computer Music is an AHRC funded research project taking place in the Music Research Centre at University of York (UK). The project, initiated by Dr Tony Myatt in October 2007, conducts research into experimental electronic musics with an emphasis on non-academic practices and artists. The project is a response to a gap between academic and professional computer music; it takes the stance that many of the most radical and revolutionary developments in computer music have taken place outside academia. A total of nine artists will be invited to work with the research team over the course of the project. Each artist will be resident in the Music Research Centre for a period of two weeks during which they will develop new creative work and interact with the project's researchers. for more information see - http://www.music.york.ac.uk/mrc/na-cm/ contact - mrc-nacm at york.ac.uk The University of York Music Research Centre supports creative, technological and critical research in contemporary computer music. The centre features world leading acoustic spaces and audio resources for surround sound research, computer music and sound art. Arts and Humanities Research Council - Each year the AHRC provides approximately ?90 million from the Government to support research and postgraduate study in the arts and humanities, from archaeology and English literature to design and dance. In any one year, the AHRC makes approximately 700 research awards and around 1,500 postgraduate awards. Awards are made after a rigorous peer review process, to ensure that only applications of the highest quality are funded. Arts and humanities researchers constitute nearly a quarter of all research-active staff in the higher education sector. The quality and range of research supported by this investment of public funds not only provides social and cultural benefits but also contributes to the economic success of the UK. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... A request to anyone who gets the TV channel CMT (available in North America and perhaps elsewhere) that airs a show called CMT Crossroads (there is a version of CMT that I get here in Canada that *does* not air this show; I believe it is only the American version of this channel that airs CMT Crossroads): There's a new edition of CMT Crossroads airing (1 hour in length) that features Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. The show next airs tonight, Thursday February 14 at 7pm Eastern Standard Time and then airs again tomorrow, Friday February 15 at 3PM Eastern Standard Time. Excerpts from the show are available on the CMT site http://www.cmt.com/shows/dyn/cmt_crossroads/127935/episode.jhtml but I would like to see the entire hour--and unfortunately my cable company does not provide the proper version (ie the version that airs CMT Crossroads) of this channel in my area. So... I'm hoping that someone who does indeed get the channel that airs this CMT Crossroads show could record it for me. If you could do this for me, I would be happy to send you a CD or something to compensate. Please email me if you can help. Thank you. The former of these, representation, has been more dominant throughout cinema?s history. The lens has in effect become a means of capturing our ?reality?, allowing us to store and later reproduce sights and sounds to be replayed as a substitute for personal memories. With the arrival of computing and it?s now widespread use within cinema we see the latter begin to take dominance. Cinema as representation is changing to cinema as simulation, creating an era more important than the transition from silent to sound or from black and white to colour. Cinema has the possibility to become a form without any necessarily inferred referent, it is known, quantifiable (pixels) and so can be modified, abstracted, constructed in numerous ways. It?s method of production can be improved, changed or even reconceived allowing it?s authors to work as never before. Cinema arrives at the end of an era with promise of a new one enabling it to become immersive, live, participative, interactive, navigable, recombinatory, distributed, networked, coded etc. On March 11th (8pm till late) Open Ear will host an event curated by Garrett Lynch (http://www.asquare.org/) at Canterbury Christ Church University Broadstairs Campus entitled Cinema presenting performances and screenings on this theme. Works will address the future of cinema and explore a diverse set of possible directions. The line-up for the evening will be as follows: - Semiconductor (http://www.semiconductorfilms.com/) - Paul Adams (http://www.myspace.com/mrpauladams) - Mick Grierson (http://www.mickgrierson.co.uk/) - Fr?d?rique Santune (http://www.saturne-feerique.net/LABO/) - John Kannenberg (http://www.stasisfield.com/) - Adam Chapman (http://www.adamchapmanart.com/) - 33dB (http://www.myspace.com/letageramegot) - And more :: The Venue :: Canterbury Christ Church Broadstairs Campus, situated on the east coast of Kent, England approximately 30 minutes from Canterbury, opened in 2000 with a wide selection of higher education courses. For order mail to: leif.elggren-at-mbox300.swipnet.se About the record: "The source material of the compositions are historical recordings made on wax cylinders (German: ?Walze?) from the archive of the Ethnological Museum in Berlin. The recordings were all made at the beginning of the last century in different parts of the world. For each of my eight pieces I processed the sounds and noises of one wax cylinder using a computer, sometimes modulating them with sine waves (Walzen 3, 4 and 8), combining them to new compositions. I was interested in the interplay of recorded ?memory?, imagination (who sang/played what where and why?) and the disintegration of the information by the material (background noise, technical faults, decay), the fading of semiotic contexts and lastly in my electronic processing. My method was to contrast and integrate the sound of the wax cylinders and the transported audio content. The recording and storing of immaterial ?audio information? made me curious and inspired me to work with the material. Like old photographs that slowly fade, the ?audio information? disappears or changes either by decay of the medium or on the semiotic level by the ignorance of the listener who, the older the material becomes, only can imagine how the person whose song or music is played posthumously, thought or lived. In his essay ?Die helle Kammer? (English title: ?Camera Lucida?) Roland Barthes describes the paradox situation in the coincidence of past and present which take
