Leif Inge will share his work @art.xxXtenxion with us in a mixed reality happening. It is staged 24hours, simultaneously at the St?dtische Galerie in Regensburg/Germany as on the 3-D platform Second Life. Therefore we are more than happy for the special invitation of Reda Ribble and eGabelor to SimpliPrivacy - an optically exciting and challenging environment - pure pop in a huge 5th floor penthouse. "It is unbelievably beautiful. It is a masterpiece of a masterpiece, and maybe the closest we can ever come to experiencing what the deaf Beethoven heard, or experienced, in his head." Mark Swed, The Los Angeles Times "That cultural statement is one of the levels 9 Beet Stretch works on, and there are others. It reveals acoustic truths you never suspected. Fantastic idea." Kyle Gann, The Village Voice The critically acclaimed 9 Beet Stretch is an amazing 24 hour long electroacoustic concert where a massive soundscape is made out of Beethovens 9th Symphony - it is augmented to last 24 hours with no distortion in pitch. The audience has embraced this rare occasion and many have actually stayed through the 24hours concert! The result is this live recording, Specification.Fifteen. This work premiered on March 30, 2006 in front of the curved panoramic window of the Museum?s Lerner Room as the sun set across the city?s skyline. Specification.Fifteen evokes the stillness and opposing yet related spaces of Sugimoto1s Seascapes, which suggest infinitesimal change and variation under a seemingly uniform surface. A second performance for Transmediale.07 at the Akademie der Kuenste [Berlin, Germany], where the work was also exhibited and awarded one of five Honorable Mentions from the Jury. For this live performance a new video work was created utilizing the 13 Sugimoto Seascape images which had been present in the Hirshhorn exhibit. Over 45 minutes the perfectly aligned still images transition and dissolve between and over each other in an often barely noticeable 3 minute hazy and hallucinatory shift. ?Water and air. So very commonplace are these substances, they hardly attract attention and yet they vouchsafe our very existence. Mystery of mysteries, water and air are right there before us in the sea. Every time I view the sea, I feel a calming sense of security, as if visiting my ancestral home; I embark on a voyage of seeing.? - Hiroshi Sugimoto COLORFIELD VARIATIONS curated by: Richard Chartier (www.3particles.com) This program, curated by renowned sound artist Richard Chartier, is a collection of audio/visual works reinterpreting the Color Field movement by an international array of critically acclaimed sound and new media artists including: Frank Bretschneider, Alan Callander, Chris Carter + Cosey Fanni Tutti (Chris&Cosey/Throbbing Gristle), Sue Costabile, Evelina Domnitch + Dmitry Gelfand, Mark Fell (SND/Blir) + Ernest Edmonds, Tina Frank + General Magic, Ryoichi Kurokawa, Stephan Mathieu, Steve Roden, and Bas Van Koolwijk. Colorfield Variation includes new works especially created for this program. Color Field painting, an abstract style that emerged in the 1950s following Abstract Expressionism, is characterized by canvases painted primarily with stripes, washes and fields of solid color. The first serious and critically acclaimed art movement to originate in the nation's capital, Washington Color School was central to the larger Color Field movement. As a reaction to the emotional energy and gestural surface of Abstract Expressionists, the Color Field artists and members of The Washington Color School turned away from the individual mark in favor of color itself becoming the content of the work. Breaking painting down to the fundamental formal elements, the Color Field artists created pure simplified, large-format, color- dominated fields on a large monumental scale. During the early sixties, Color Field painting was the term used to describe younger artists whose work were related to second generation abstract expressionism yet clearly pointed toward a new direction in American painting. Artists such as Clyfford Still, Mark Rothko, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, Helen Frankenthaler, Leon Berkowitz, Frank Stella and others eliminated recognizable imagery from their canvas and presented abstraction as an end in itself with each painting as one unified, cohesive, monolithic image. This program in its original form was created for Washington Project for the Arts/Corcoran (www.wpac.org) as part of the city wide Colorfield Remix events which took place in April-June 2007 in Washington, DC. LAPLANDIA Friday, September 7th mitchell akiyama + bruce tovsky and shimpei takeda Toronto born, Montreal based Mitchell Akiyama has carved a niche for himself as one of Canada's premier avant-garde electronic musicians. He incorporates traditional instruments and real world sound sources in his compositions, fusing the organic and the digital. The results can be beautiful and lush, jarring and abrasive, but are, above all, always moving. 'Hope that lines don't cross' on Alien8 Recordings', sub label Substractif, was lauded by critics and became a staple on college/alternative radio charts in North America and Europe. He has also recently finished a collaborative album with Cincinnati based Joshua Treble. The project, 'Desormais', is rooted in experimental, noisy terrain but is full of jagged beauty. In addition, Akiyama's new solo album, 'Temporary music,' will be released early this year on prestigious German label Raster-Noton. The record is a collection of fragments - shards of pianos, pieces of field records, and digital interruptions. Akiyama has played extensively in Europe and North America at festivals such as Sonar and Mutek alongside the likes of Oval, Francisco Lopez, Bruce Tovsky is a visual/sound artist, who began painting at the age of 7 and started playing with tape recorders at the age of 10. Ever since then he has been figuring out ways of putting sound and pictures together. For the past several years, he has been creating live video and sound improvisations with artists such as John Hudak, David Linton and Kim Cascone at spaces such as Diapason, Experimental Intermedia, Issue Project Room and his own installation space 106BLDG30 Shimpei Takeda (b.1982), is an artist working with photography, video, and improvisational performance. Originally from Japan, Takeda currently lives and works in New York City. Primarily self-taught, Takeda began shooting pictures at the age of 18. Weitere Informationen/Infoline & Bildmaterial http://www.geraeuschwelten.de http://www.cuba-cultur.de http://www.aufabwegen.com Informationen BIG CITY ORCHESTRA Big City Orchestrae is based in the California Bay area (USA). Along with its core group of four members, BCO has an ever-rotating cast of musician and non-musician members. Working from specific themes, current projects include: Salty Sea Shanties For Young Pirates (an upcoming UBUIBI release), El Amor Brujo ("Love, The Magician") by Manuel de Falla, which is the followup to In A Persian Market (recently released on Suggestion Records) -- and Replayer, a collection of prog-rock favorites with many special guest musicians (upcoming UBUIBI release). While in Europe, BCO will be performing as a four-piece ensemble, creating textural noise-scapes using traditional, acoustic/organic elements combined with laptop/digital, electrified and circuit-bent/modified instruments. The live presentation will blend sonic drones and harsh noise with adaptations of classical and modern compositions. * * * * * REVIEWS * * * * * IN A PERSIAN MARKET (Suggestion Records) "One of CRUCIAL BLAST's favorite drone/sound experiment albums, EVER. In A Persian Market is one of the finest works ever from legendary sound manipulators BIG CITY ORCHESTRA, a dim, surreal, occult vision of Morocco as seen through the eyes of an opium addict. A surreal, fictional, instrumental journey through the shadowy backstreets and alleyways of a Persian Market. This album consists of sounds of the marketplace intermingling with evocative Middle Eastern-esque jazz, beautiful orchestral parts, dark ambient textures, found sounds, antique, almost cartoon-like music... But there's nothing "funny" or whimsical about this at all... this is dark, forebidding, absolutely engrossing sound/music cloaked in hashish-smoke, howling desert winds, and midnight drones. Totally stunning, amazingly beautiful, and essential for fans of superior drone/neoclassical/experimental music. " BCO on PENDU SOUND (www.psr.pendugallery.com) Big City Orchestra is a wild romp through sound and broadcast media that isn't afraid to kick commercialism where it counts while rubbing salt in the wounds of the RIAA. This band of self proclaimed "mutant folk" artists have been around since 1979 commenting on society in a variety of musical styles. At times their music is little more than dark ambient, built with ominous sounds and eerie atmospheres. But, there are times when Big City Orchestra overlays those tracks with samples that add vicious biting commentary. Revamping commercial moments of nostalgia, reworking The Beatles, and producing recordings of animal sounds is just a small tidbit of what Big City Orchestra has done to tweak the musical perspective of folks everywhere. Big City Orchestra should hold great appeal for just about anyone with a warped sense of humor and major distaste for today's commercial tactics and America's political state. From creeping ambient tracks to noise intermingled with amusing use of samples, Big City Orchestra's tongue in cheek humor have people gasping and giggling across the nations. BAND REVIEW (Comfortstand Records) One of the most idiosyncratic and original groups of the past two decades, BCO is not your standard Orchestra. Situated in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, the band has released an enormous catalog of recorded material over the past two decades. Formed in the late 1970's the ensemble continues to maintain a free-flowing roster of artists from around the world that collaborate on specific projects. Categorizing the Orchestra into any given genre can be a task, as releases continue to surprise even the most devout listener. There is never any way to precisely classify the next BCO release. An album of authentic sea-shanties? A wall of noise? A shimmering downpour of lullabies whispered to the wind? A humorous or thought-provoking album of Sound Collages? Vocal excursions set to make Rod McKuen blush? We press play, leaning forward with slight apprehension. We await the first wave of blissful deception. We are perpetually rewarded. We had four amazing releases from Christopher McFall and Billy Gomberg, both from the USA, Juan Jos? Calarco from Argentina and Thelmo Cristovam from Brazil. Thelmo offered us a raw trip to the midst of the Amazon jungle with pure field recording extravagant sounds. Juan Jos? amazed us with his out-of-this world organic textures made from field recordings and electro-acoustics experiments. Billy gave us an excellent electro-acoustic drone treatment and Christopher made us travel with his urban field recordings turned into ambient drones. Don't miss any of these releases! August was also the month for a new test tube feature: the 4XT (absurd nickname for Test Tube Top Ten, what else). The July 4XT was nothing short of interesting, and we were counting on showing you August's top too, but unfortunately the server played us for fools and reset all statistics back to zero... Anyway, next month we hope to show you a brand new and fresh 4XT for the month of September. In other news, our dear friend and talented musician David Velez from Colombia - now based in the amazing New York City - will perform live a couple of times this month. If you're from The Big Apple (or just visiting) why don't you show up there and give David a hug from us? :) Well, that's about it for now... sorry for being a bit late with this newsletter, it should've been out before September's first release, and it didn't... lazy me... well... by the way, check out Clorofila Azul's new compilation of instrumental golden oldies. It's quite good. Meanwhile, we're preparing some great releases to mood you out of the after-summer depression: Industrial post-electronica german act meta:human with some goth-dark-wave feel, remembering some Bauhaus moments there (yeah, reallly); Experimentalist Hugo Paquete from Oporto with some really good analog electronics and to finish this month up, north-america's The Jack Bohlen Book Club will bring us a 40 minute long dense drone piece. Next month, we will have a new world record here at test tube: 6 releases - 1 full album and 5 EPs! All free, as always! You know were to find the best DRM-free free, off-center experimental music, right? See you next month! Peace, '| August 31, 2007 JUNGLE MUSIC " tube'|088 - Thelmo Cristovam - Field Recordings #02 ?Are you ready to be embraced by the Tropical Rainforest? Thanks to the recordings of Brazilian physician mathematic and composer Thelmo Cristovam, we can sonically witness one of the most sensational environments of our planet in the surroundings of Lake Mamori (Manaus, Brazil). Paying attention to the beauty of the micro and macro sounds of this jungle can be impossible when you are being surrounded by moistly warm air and the "Anopheles Gambiae", a mosquito that is the principal vector of malaria (afflicting more than 500 million people and causes more than 1 million deaths each year). These field recordings are an aural privilege that not all humans deserve. If you are a nature lover, the layers of heat will be replaced by soothing layers of refreshing eco-sound, and the mosquito bites will become pleasing static sensations. Enjoy a full day of pure connection with a pure environment.? - Sebastian Alvarez '| August 28, 2007 LEZROD IN NYC David Velez doesn't stop for a minute. Apart from building a promising career as a graphic artist in the difficult world of New York advertising, apart from being one of the most prolific musicians in netlabel world, with almost 10 releases in less than 3 years, David is also slowly getting together his own live performances agenda. Next month, September 12th at 09:30pm, David will be performing live with Ben Owen and Giles Aubry, at a place called 'The Tank'. Are you from NYC? More info here. Here is the short introduction regarding David: ?David Velez (aka Lezrod) is a sound artist / composer from Bogot?, Colombia, currently living in NYC. David has been publishing with netlabels from France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Argentina and Mexico since 2005. His release Retorno a la nada was nominated in the research category on the 2006 Qwartz awards, and the piece Nada was an official selection of the festival.? Peace, '| August 23, 2007 ACOUSTIC DOOM* " tube'|087 - Juan Jos? Calarco - Plano Vertical ?We continue our travel through the wonders of electro-acoustics with another american, but this time it's a south-american. Please welcome Juan Jos? from the capital of the Tango, Buenos Aires. 'Plano Vertical', consisting of only two long pieces - 'Extensi?n Activa' and 'Plano Vertical 2' - is a fifty minute journey along a misterious dark corridor, with highly textured sound halls along the way, which appear and disappear under various element-like palettes, like earth, water, fire, wind and others. There are also some sections where we can hear some kind of machinery working around us, feeling like some kind of an obscure sci-fi soundtrack. We can also hear layers of electricity, human steps and voices, boxes and stones falling around, thermal generators, steam engines and a plethora of real-world (maybe out-of-this-world too) noises. 'Plano Vertical' is an amazing electro-acoustics album, worked to prefection and offering us a intense ride all the way to the end. Sounds even better with good circumaural headphones. Not to be missed.? - Pedro Leit?o (*) Thanks to Erik Skodvin for making up a word for this genre. '| August 14, 2007 ACT OF GOD, ACT OF MAN " tube'|086 - Billy Gomberg - Climate ?Two years ago, on August 29/30, hurricane Katrina hit hard on the greater New Orleans area, causing death and destruction as she passed and dissipated a few days after. Considered by weather analysts as the 3rd greatest hurricane in American history, Katrina was also considered by many as the probable result of men's relentless and irrational harm on our planet. Not that hurricanes never happened before, but they are growing stronger and more destructive in recent years, as temperatures rise and ice melts in the northern hemisphere. This is not new. A sad story like this one could be told by 'Climate', an electroacoustic work authored by New York resident and sound designer Billy Gomberg. On 'Climate', Billy manipulates feedback sinewaves and folds them around sparse notes generated by his electronic apparatus. Sometimes they are dark, obscure and sad non-musical pieces, and sometimes they sound ethereal, musical, almost lyrical pieces on the verge of emotional collapse, like the 'lower ninth ward' was, as portrayed on the cover artwork, after the passing of Katrina. 'Climate' is all this and more for you to delve in and discover. Billy has released before on Standard Klik Music, 12/term. and other places. He will return shortly after this release with a collaborative work entitled 'Country at the River of Friendship with Anne Guthrie. Keep your ears peeled.? - Pedro Leit?o '| August 06, 2007 WIDE-OPEN INTROSPECTION " tube'|085 - Christopher McFall - Self-preservation intact with teeth ?Since making his debut appearance on netlabel Con-v in late 2005, Christopher McFall has been steadfastly expanding his discography. Following additional virtual releases on Filament Recordings, Laboratoire Moderne, Alg-a, and Clinical Archives, he now brings a single extended soundscape of meticulously sculptured sounds and evolving textures abstrusely titled "Self-Preservation Intact With Teeth" to netlabel Test Tube. A pr?cis of Christopher's distinctive compositional style reads something like this: Using analogue field recordings collected from his home base in metropolitan Kansas City, Missouri USA, Christopher deliberately extracts segments of the source material and artfully processes them into digital metaphors of urban sounds, reassembling them into multilayered, richly detailed compositions of abstract sound art. Expanding on this in his own words (as quoted from his Myspace site), the impetus behind Christopher's compositions "revolve around the desire to manipulate/engineer recorded aspects of the macroscopic world around him into a microscopic mosaic." I'll label "Self-Preservation Intact With Teeth" (as well as Christopher's other works) as ambient but with qualification: This is not pastoral ambient of the easy listening, organic, or spacious genres. This is abstract ambient born of mundane, urban environmental sounds - complex, gritty, and close-up - although, if you listen carefully, there are segments in which Christopher does cleverly manage to coax some amazingly melodious sounds from such unmusical source material. If you're not familiar with Christopher's work, then "Self-Preservation Intact With Teeth" is the perfect composition with which to become acquainted (and, for those of you that are - well, you have an idea of the excellent listening that lies just ahead of you).? - Larry Johnson '| August 02, 2007 TEST TUBE TOP TEN Starting now, we will have our own Test Tube Top Ten (4XT) chart. Curiosity #2: position #08, synth-pop Post Human Era, another atypical release. But unsurprisingly, 66% of the most downloaded releases are from the April/May/June period. All the 4XT releases sum up to the whopping total of 18345 downloads! And the download difference between #01 and #10 is more than the double! Somatic means ?of, relating to, or affecting the body; corporeal or physical?. I felt this title particularly suited the work due to its more tangible, telluric, or earthly quality. Recent releases such as ?chroma?, have looked upwards and beyond the confines of our normal horizons, whereas Somatic mirrors and reinterprets more conventional surroundings. Early working titles were based around the idea of being ?without eyes? or ?without image? and this original concept was carried through with the sleeve design. The focus is on the act of listening away from additional stimuli, leaving the listener to create their own unique interpretations. http://www.con-v.org ____________________________________________________________________________________ Take the Internet to Go: Yahoo!Go puts the Internet in your pocket: mail, news, photos & more. http://mobile.yahoo.com/go?refer=1GNXIC From kim at anechoicmedia.com Sat Sep 15 09:36:03 2007 From: kim at anechoicmedia.com (Kim Cascone) Date: Sat, 15 Sep 2007 06:36:03 -0700 Subject: [Microsound-announce] TECHNOLOGIES OF PERSUASION From Propaganda to Paranoia Message-ID: http://www.maybelogic.org/rushkoffcrs.htm -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The main objective of this experiment was to detect some acoustic properties of oil as substance, placed in different capacities such as crystal glasses and medical bulbs. The obtained 15 sound fragments are collected by the frequency and spectrum analysis of oil behaviour, its molecular changes in various environments (aggressive and non-agressive) and wide range of oil interactions with metal. Can we paint using vibrating air to obtain a sound that represents something? What if sound could be used to design features belonging to other sensory spheres? Choosing a particular frequency could help to evocate a thin nose? A granular light? The fragrance of morning after a sunrise full of small rain? The taste of a coffee? All these questions were contained in a reflection about abstract music sent to nine sound artists and they were asked to start from those question marks to reflect about the possible uses of sound as a representative media. The result are some very different sound portraits, from the biggest eruption of history captured in the drones of italian composer Elio Martusciello(ReR Megacorp) to the processed field recordings of the Mimerlaven mine in Norberg by the Nottingham based Flotel(Expanding), from the free jazz tones of the audio picture of his father in law by Autistici(12k,Kikapu) to the micro rhythms constructed on sounds captured from a Lomo camera by Maps and Diagrams(PAUSE_2,Smallfish,Cactus Island). The other artists who answered this unusual call are Lawrence English (Room40,Quatermass,Baskaru,Cronica), Salvatore Borrelli aka (etre)(Baskaru), He Can Jog(audiobulb, hippocamp), Gregg Kowalsky aka Ossobuco (Kranky, Nosordo) and Motion (12k,Fat Cat) who all gently took part in this challenge. www.autistici.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In the first edition of the Festival INTERFACE 2006, the idea of using the entire potential of house?s space proved to be a success. Thus, the main hall, studio, gallery, caf?, stairwells, terrace, courtyard and alleyway ? three floors of space - will once again be made available for projects. The music program of INTERFACE spans an arc that began approximately 40 years ago and ends with new and recent projects ? from the legendary Los Angeles Free Music Society, LAFMS and Tom Recchion to the Californian interpretation of ambient and minimal music with Harold Budd, Rick Cox, representatives of sophisticated tuning systems and homemade instruments in the tradition of Harry Partch and Erv Wilson, Kraig Grady, a pioneer of electronic and computer music, David Rosenboom, including, among others, electronica performers and composers of the younger generation: DNTEL, Carlos Nino & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, The Gaslamp Killer, Nobody, Flying Lotus, John Wiese, Scott Arford, Daedelus, Daniel Rothman. Complementing and accompanying these artists throughout the festival will be projects by Berlin and European artists and composers including Cluster, Los Glissandinos/AMM, David Toop, Trio Nexus/Cornelius Schwehr, Michael Maierhof, Hauke Harder, Nicolaus A. Huber, Michael Hirsch, Michael Pinter/Ensemble Zwischent?ne, Werner Dafeldecker, Boris Hauf, Werner Durand, Tim Tetzner, Andrew Pekler, September Collective/Barbara Morgenstern, Stefan Schneider, Paul Wirkus, Ernstalbrecht Stiebler and more. But please feel free to forward this on to other pertinent list groups beyond Phonography, Lowercase Sound and Microsound Announce. Thanks in advance! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- catalog number: and/27 artist: FRANCISCO LOPEZ title: Wind [Patagonia] format: CD (packaged in a super gloss digipak with 16 page booklet) http://www.and-oar.org/pop_and_27.html and/OAR couldn't be more pleased to present the third part of Spanish sound artist Francisco L?pez's already classic "trilogy of the Americas" which started with La Selva, followed by Buildings [New York] (both released by V2 Archief, Netherlands). An immersion into the sonic matter from micro- and macro- environments dominated by wind in Patagonia. A vast barren space shaped and inhabited by the ever-changing forces of unmuted plants, rocks, sand, snow, and ice. An irregular broad-band environment of relentless strength and richness. And above all, a tour de force of profound listening. L?pez?s Patagonian winds have a ferocious beauty and immensity. Delicate whispers combine with wild swarms and eddies undergirded by deep bass punches. And all of this produced by an invisible force that endlessly sweeps the surface of the globe. With this, we are no longer in the tidy world of human music, but have entered the sublime domain of natural sound. (Christoph Cox). ------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Thanks very much for your time!
