we are happy to announce the call for papers, music and installations
for the 6th International Linux Audio Conference (LAC2008).  LAC2008
will take place in Cologne (Germany) Feb 28th to March 2nd 2008.

The Academy of Media Arts, Cologne, is proud to host the 2008 issue of
this event, where once a year programmers and artists, musicians,
composers and practioneers gather to discuss and explore new and
important developments in making music and sounds with Linux and Open
Source software.

The Linux Audio Conference is both a meeting of developers writing
audio software for Linux as it is a music festival, where artists from
all over the world show how free software can create fresh and
exciting new sounds.

Call for Installation Proposals

The conference will include an exhibition of sound art or mixed media
art with a substantial sound portion.  This exhibition will consist of
works by students of the Academy of Media Arts (KHM) Cologne and
artists from outside the KHM.  We are looking for installation
projects with a substantial sound portion which have been entirely or
mostly produced under Linux and/or with open source software for
inclusion in the abovementioned exhibition.

Installation proposals may be designed for a specific presentation
space and/or reflect certain aspects of the exhibition venue.  In
order to give some impressions of the venue, photos of the different
spaces available for the exhibition along with some notes are provided
for download at

Proposals for entirely self-contained and non-site-specific projects
are also welcome.  The submission of proposals for previously
unrealised installations is encouraged, though installations which
already have been shown may also get selected.

The artistic and technical realisation of the selected proposals is
completely up to the artists.  Basic technical support for the
exhibition (electricity, standard network access, limited basic
assistance) is provided by the conference organisers.

Out of all submitted proposals, two projects will be selected for
funded realisation by a jury.  To each of the two selected projects, a
scholarship of EUR 2.000,00 will be granted.  This fee should cover
the entire realisation of the project, material expenses, travel,
accomodation and all further expenses in conjunction with the
realisation of the project.  The selected artists are invited to use
the school's facilities (e.g. laboratories, studios) free of charge
for realising the work.  In case a selected proposal has been
submitted by more than one artist, one person has to be elected by the
team for being responsible for the project, signing the contract and
receiving the money due to legal issues.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to legal issues, the scholarships for the projects
can only be given to non-germans, i.e. to anybody whose nationality is
NOT german.

Further projects might be invited for inclusion in the exhibition but
whithout granting any funding from the conference.

Besides artistic criteria and technical reasons, these criteria apply

Tape pieces or pieces which are performed by the composers themselves
will generally have more chances to get included.  If we get more
pieces than we can include in the program, composers who are attending
the conference are preferred.

Terms and conditions for participation can be found in the form
mentioned above. This form includes among other things:

I will receive no fees whether my composition is played or not. GEMA
fees (in case of performance) will be paid by the organizer.  The
material I send to the LAC organisation team will not be returned.

We invite submissions of papers addressing all areas of audio
processing based on Linux and open source software. Papers can focus
on technical, artistic or scientific issues and can target developers
or users. This includes (but is not limited to) the following
categories:

    * Computer Music
    * Music Production
    * Instruments
    * Drivers and Sound Architecture
    * Audio Distributions
    * Generic (Usage, Documentation etc.) 

The conference is held in English.

Length of a paper is 4-8 pages. Papers have to include an abstract
(50-100 words). The abstract will be published separately on the
conference website once the paper has been accepted. Also, papers
should include up to 5 keywords.

In general talks should take 20-30 minutes followed by 5 minutes
discussion.

Please notify us if you need a special technical setup. The technical
standard setup will be:

    * microphone/head set
    * projector with XVGA input (resolution 1024x768)
    * stereo speaker setup with mini jack input 

If you are not able to bring your laptop along with you, please notify
us in advance.

How to submit

    * Do not send papers via email as with the past LAC conferences!

    * Instead papers will be submitted via the online form that opens
      on the Linux Audio Conference website in mid/end october at

so, this was out first new edition since july, and we've built up stacks of great material since that time.  taking it slowly to begin with, though, we sampled just a few long tracks from our stacks - so sense rushing into things.  so we heard (relatively) new sounds from the labels 23five, sirr (keep an ear out for thier night at the upcoming atlantic waves festival in london!), jewelled antler (from loren chasse's project of), as well as the long-awaited return of the italian project logoplasm on the ctrlaltcanc mp3 label (free download from their website!), and a framework intro recorded for us by long-time contributor adam wimbush.

so, yes, we're back on the air, and still accepting submissions for upcoming shows!  nows the time to send in your works, make a proposition for an edition of framework:afield, or record that intro you've been meaning to get to for years.  running very low on intros, please send them in!

As a long time supporter of Einst?rzende Neubauten,
their democratic turn of the last few years is not
only amusing - but also creates as a link between
artists of such stature and the various other
sub-networks of musicians and artists who have been
working 'out in the open' for years. So as I started
out this game of hunting down supporter act slots, i
also started to plan for something special, if i
should be so lucky. The strangest thing was that i was
supposed to be on tour with colleague Eric Cordier in
this time, thinking i might have a slot for EN earlier
elsewhere in Europe. The Cordier tour was postponed,
and days after this chance was given me.

'Baunoten' is from one of six support acts for
Einst?rzende Neubauten in 2004, recorded live by Boris
Wilsdorf (EN sound engineer/producer) at Hamburg
Musikhalle in 2004, specially composed for them, based
on room re-recordings of their webcast rehearsals and
dubbed with one of my self-built "acoustic laptops".

   OCTOBER NEWS

Good friends,

September was the time for a couple off-kilter - for test tube - releases. We had the return of Clorofila Azul with the second volume in his collection of all-time hits and we had the amazing full-lenght from the german goth-industrial outfit meta:Human, with a fabulous dark-but-danceable album full of great songs. In the not-so-off-kilter side, we had Hugo Paquete with a great debut of experimental/noise electronics and closing the festivities we had also The Jack Bohlen Book Club with the single piece 'Lion & Lamb', an ultra-minimal excercise of electro-acoustic drones. Great stuff for all tastes!

We didn't had our 4XT top this month because of a freakish server database reset. Computers... oh hell. Anyway, during September we gathered another month of statistics and already have the new 4XT. Check out the main news page.
In other news, my good friend Adam Crammond - a.k.a. c4 - from Toledo, U.S.A. has set up a nifty new netlabel called Proc-Records and he's putting out loads of new releases from all over the planet. Check it out! And if you're a musician as well, why don't you help Adam to build a great catalogue, by submitting your works? Adam will treat you as family, because he's a great guy! Love you Adam! :D

This will be a helluva month, folks. Lots of work to do because we'll have 6 (yes, six) new releases! The first one is already out, a great improvised acoustic/electronic album by new york duo Fraufraulein. Further down the road we'll have another test tube new artist, french guy Davy Douhine with his outfit Omas FGT, delivering great obliquous IDM electronics. After that we'll have two excellent new releases - yes two - from Daniel Catarino (remember Landfill?). This time he picked up his cowboy boots and went to the desert. This is his own version of 'Paris, Texas', complete with outlaws, bags full of dollars and tequila! Next, our most british portuguese friend Organic Anagram with his own freakish version of 'London by Night'. Creepy experimental stuff full of hilarious twists and turns. Yeah, and to end the month with a bang, yet another new kid on the block - The Turtle -, bringing us the next big thing in hardcore electronics, called "flashcore", a new urban style it s
 eems, of
vertiginous and agressive beats. 'Dark Towers Of Terrorpine' is the name of the beast.

JACK BOHLEN IS A SCHIZO!


" tube'|092 - The Jack Bohlen Book Club - Lion & Lamb

?Yay! Another new artist here at test tube HQ. Kevin Murphy comes from the U.S. of A. and mainly works around ultra-minimalistic compositions based on drones and electro-acoustic frequencies. The unusual alias he has picked up - The Jack Bohlen Book Club - was probably taken from a Philip K. Dick sci-fi novel called 'Martian Time-Slip', where the main character's name is Jack Bohlen and is a skilled repairmen and recovering schizophrenic. The story takes place on planet Mars around the year 1994. Why would there be a Book Club with his name? I honestly don't know. Perhaps it has something to do with the story coming from a book... Well, maybe Kevin Murphy didn't took his moniker from Philip K. Dick's book but I thought it was cool to put it here as a reference anyway...
As for 'Lion & Lamb', it's a 39 minute two-dimensional drone trip. Not much happening here if you don't appreciate this kind of minimalist compositions. For those who get high with this kind of sound, hell, just crank up the volume and trip your way into mars of some other planet! Get this!? - Pedro Leit?o

STUBBORN ABSTRACTION


" tube'|091 - Hugo Paquete - Commutative

?We proudly welcome another portuguese musician working with a laptop and analog machines. Hugo Paquete from Porto brings us 'Commutative', a short EP with experimental ambient sounds consisting mostly of grey noise and dense drones as sound bases. Hugo works them from there with the help of signal processing machines, delay pedals, frequency analyzers and other hardware. Conceptually, Hugo explores the relation between space and communication, with complex sound textures that bring listeners towards recognition of the sounds they hear as matter. Paquete has explored the various sonorous phenomenologies, beginning by stripping records and frequencies of radios. But now he tries to build his own aesthetic in surrounding noise of 'musique concr?te'-like music and minimalist physical space, and on the relation between the two dimensions. He is also developing an interest in the visual arts and sound installation, exploring the complex relation between man and reality and their p
 aradigms
of language, perception and technology.
As for 'Commutative', the piece 'Stubbornness' is my favorite. It goes around a heavy drone throughout the track, with some touches of improv. sequences and subtle voice sampling to good measure. I'd like it to be a tad longer 'though :)
Really good and consistent EP from Hugo. We hope to see more of this in the long run... perhaps even a long player, why not?? - Pedro Leit?o

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE


" tube'|090 - meta:Human - The Dark Ages of Technology

?Ok, time for something completely different. Meet meta:Human, a kind of an Industrial-Techno-Goth-IDM trio from Germany. 'The Dark Ages of Technology' is their own post-apocaliptic manifest. This releases is something of a 'best of', put together by the guys from 3 full albums of previously unreleased material.
We have deliberate anti-capitalist, anti-globalisation, anti... well... anti-human lyrics sung in a style not too distant from Peter Murphy's Bauhaus or Dave Gahan's Depeche Mode. We have programmed IDM/industrial beats with an old-school techno feel to them which fits very well with the singing and the post-apocaliptic mood. They call their own style 'Cyberdelic Electropunk', whatever that is...
The best moments (personal choices) of this release are: the opener 'Deadliest Species' with its dark-sci-fi mood and low-key vocals; 'Like Fire', the closest song to the Bauhaus universe, in my humble opinion; 'Rivers of Dawn' for its heavy dramatic mood; 'Catching Up' because it reminds me a lot of Depeche Mode and 'Magnitude' because it's a damn good track. There are plenty of great tracks in here. meta:Human and Esc.Laboratory (the group's organization) have plenty of other works around the web, like this one for Earth Monkey Productions.?

CHROLOPHYLL'S BLUES II


" tube'|089 - Clorofila Azul - Revisitado (sem Voz)

?Hugo Santos returns as Clorofila Azul for the promised second volume of his 'golden oldies' collection. This time we took several CDs worth of instrumental material, beats, experiences and whatever, to build up what we believe to be a worthy release.
Again, we can track most of Clorofila's strongest influences to be under the IDM and downbeat file, or even, why not, Trip Hop. 'Instrospec??o' is a very good example of all of them. But Clorofila Azul is much more than that. It seems that Hugo was looking for his own trademark sound among the ruins of his oldest works, covering pretty much all available styles between past and present. From what I was able to peek into his newest work, I think he did find his own path. But that's subject for another release, I hope.

Mientras que un canal de la se?al estereo viaja del barrio de Miraflores al aeropuerto Jorge Ch?vez, el otro canal viaja en la direcci?n opuesta, siendo la misma se?al de audio invertida.

One channel leaves Lima and another returns, one arrives at the Jorge Ch?vez Airport where Per? ends for a moment, the other one returns at the same time from abroad to the tranquility of not having to go anywhere. Conquistadores, Javier Prado, La Marina. One channel goes and the othe returns and carries out the opposite route. One single auditory memory with double direction, without process. Memories for someone that leaves but doesn't want to leave, nor return... 
This piece attempts the invasion of the audible memory of the city of Lima, over the audible presence of the city of Tijuana. The audio is in its original state and its characteristics are defined only by the technical and spatial circumstances of its acquisition. While one channel of the stereo signal travels from the Miraflores barrio to the Jorge Chavez Airport, the other channel travels in the opposite direction, with the same audio signal, only inverted.?
  Visit our stand, purchase a few "Discos Invisibles" and listen to what CUBO has to offer.

Discos Invisibles
Is a work collective based in Tijuana, Mexico, interested in the use of new languages developed due to the technological advance and the way these mechanisms can be implemented to break international and interpersonal barriers. It?s been devoted mainly to sonic experimentation and, through Discos Invisibles -independent record label- to the generation, production and distribution of CD-R?s which are 100% home made, maybe more.
The collective coexists in the digital daily life, in between high tech and digital marginality. It works in favour of the dismythification of technological environments like advanced and exclusive worlds. It is also interested in the distribution of technology and the concepts of the digital world to all social levels.
"Sound is born for everyone ", and ?Cyberspace as a public space? are some of the phrases that mark the way of our work towards an aesthetic liberty that is careful of not falling in to mimicry and unnecessary duplication. Through its facet as an independent CD-R label, and net label, Discos Invisibles supports and contributes the non profit exchange as a cultural variation of the open source, free culture and free distribution systems (through Creative Commons). This way, it continues with the tradition and principles of public access to the means of generation and distribution of artistic and technological material. Within this line of work, Discos Invisibles has participated in the organization of on-line music festivals like: Suram?rica Electr?nica and Electr?nica Mexicana, pioneer festivals in their genre, and also in a series of artistic interventions and installations in the border area between the U.S. and Mexico, which have been oriented to the theme of recontextuali
zation of audio and Sound art in the border area.

This year?s Cut & Splice festival curates for the plate by sonically
exploring the social, political and cultural aesthetics of food. In Britain,

life-blood. Cut & Splice considers ideas from consumption to excretion by
curating work from amongst the world's most pioneering artists working with

Cut & Splice has established an international reputation for inspired ideas

Celebrated US sound-text artist Charles Amirkhanian tackles the topic of
tucker with the world premiere of a new BBC commission, Quince Quinoa.
Following this the 11-piece Vienna Vegetable Orchestra will create an
extraordinary experimental sound, music and noise universe on the massed
forces of carrot flutes, pumpkin basses, leek violins, cucumberphones and
celery bongos.
 
?It?s quite liberating (and) it also leaves behind a residue of curiosity

A set of performances blending the consuming maw of aural gluttony, the
precision abstinence of sonic fasting and the obsession of restricted diet
purity. UK sound artists Lee Patterson and Helena Gough present a
collaborative performance that will reveal the hidden sound worlds of
baking, frying, boiling and basting; Switzerland?s Sudden Infant issues
forth an ear-splitting percussive jus reduced from live and pre-recorded
body sounds. Parkinson Saunders curate a selection of culinary inspired
experimental music from the like of John Cage and Alvin Lucier and, for
desert, Californian noise actionist R.H.Y. Yau serves up his own consuming
body as an extreme dish only for the strongest stomachs and ears.

5(zwischenfaelle) is the latest release by dutch electronic musician ROEL
MELLKOP. It is a special release in Meelkop?s catalogue because it is
consist of five piece that were originally used in the context of sound
installations running over a certain period of time in specific special
surroundings. For 5(zwischenfaelle) Meelkop has set himself the task to
compress these soundscapes into five dense and still minimal audio pieces
that could work outside the context of the original installations.
5(zwischenfaelle) is focussed on single sound events and stark beautiful
dynamic movements in a certain area of sound and does not have the
bruitistic research-like feel of other solo works by Meelkop.
5(zwischenfaelle) makes for concentrated unpolished ultra minimal listening
with maximum effect. For all friends of Bernhard G?nter, Francisco Lopez,
Joe Colley/Crawl Unit or Marc Behrens this is a definite work!

Roel Meelkop (Tegelen, NL, 1963) studied sculpture and painting at Academie
van Beeldende Kunsten in Rotterdam, NL. He graduated in 1990 and in the
years after that he concentrated mainly on painting. Five years later, he
decided to expand his views on art and philosophy and applied for a
postgraduate course at the same academy. He graduated from this course in
1997. By then, Meelkop had abandoned painting altogether in favour of
working with sound. Before this he had already been working with THU20 on
experimental sound collages and electronic music. This practice was extended
and now includes sound installations and performances as well.
Nowadays, Meelkop regularly plays live performances around the world, either
solo, or with one of the three musical projects he is involved with: THU20
(musique concrete), Kapotte Muziek (electro-acoustic music) or GOEM
(electronic music). His solo music is a unique combination of the
aforementioned styles. Besides his live activities, Meelkop has a long list
of releases to show for his creativity and productivity in the studio.
Another area of interest for Meelkop is sound in space. The relation between
space and sound and the unique artistic possibilities this offers have urged
him to create several installations, not only in exhibition spaces, but also
in public spaces. Most of these installations are created specifically for
the spaces that will hold them and are based on Meelkop's impressions from
these spaces. In most cases the work is not visual but auditory, thus
expanding the existing space in a way that visual art will never achieve.
Central issue in these installations is the experience of space and time at
a specific place and time. Aside from his artistic activities, Meelkop is
also active as organiser, curator and programmer of contemporary sound art
and electronic music in Rotterdam, NL and as a reviewer for the email
magazine Vital Weerkly.

L'ull cec produeix l'acte zero del NIVELL ZERO, que inaugurar? la seva

Malgrat comptar amb un component r?tmic for?a marcat, la seva
producci? musical dista de ser classificable com a m?sica de ball.
Descrita pels seus propis creadors com a "grayscale slo-mo glitch
hop", es resisteix a qualsevol categoritzaci? espont?nia o
reduccionista. Lluny de caure en la simple repetici?, INCITE/

computer networks and one with fm radio networks.

workshop aims at introducing 'Theremin-sensors' as a new concept

The computer group of Andrey Smirnov + Guy van Belle will be building
unique audio/visual body-related instruments and create a network in
order to experiment with sharing sounds, images & data.
The main purpose of the workshop is to build an audiovisual 'Theremin
Orchestra' and perform with it on the last day of the workshop as a

This will be certainly of interest to any dancer, musician, visualist,

   Andrey Smirnov is an independent researcher and developer of
electronic music techniques, with a particular interest in design and
development of both hard- and software sensor technology with complex

Multimedia in Moscow, where he gives lectures and workshops on the
basics of electro acoustic music, musical acoustics and

2.RADIO HACKING + RADIO ORCHESTRA workshop.
The radio group of Sarah Washington and Knut Aufermann would have
radios to play as instruments. Everybody will be able to use their own
individually modified radio as a musical instrument. The workshop will
introduce different techniques of conducting the group with all the
participants being encouraged to bring an idea for pieces and to
experience conducting the group.
The goal of the workshop is the formation of an orchestra of
electronic musicians and performing live on the last day of the
workshop.

November 20 to 24.11.07 from 18.00 to 21.00

_/Participants profile:
The participants should be keen to dismantle radios and take part in a
collective musical performance.
No prior musical or electronics knowledge is needed. The participants
should be able to take part in all workshop sessions

The maximum amount of participants 15.

Dear microsounders

Over the past 3 days, Sound Designers and Digital Composers from  
Edinburgh University have been working with Kim (Cascone) as part of  
his Simple Genetic Algorithm workshop tour...

Starting from a microsound-list donated library of field recordings,  
files were mated, spliced and mutated (processed) over 5 generations  
to create a new genepool for performance.

The performance took the form of tag-team improvisation within and  
between 2 laptop quartets and 1 laptop trio facing off over 3 stereo  
pairs placed roughly at points of a triangle... given that 11 people  
were involved the results are remarkably coherent!

the AGM and invite the community to be present. 
In addition to normal Agenda items we will be 
presenting information about the two educational 
projects for the 2007-8 year, the EA Seminars and 
the CEC / Concordia Archival Project.

We are setting up an audio feed to allow members 
living in other cities and countries to listen

Marko Peljhan:

The Third Culture: A Vision For A Science/Art/Technology Conversion  
Dialectic

The lecture is organized as a part of the exhibition 'Situational  
Awareness' by Marko Peljhan that will open on Wednesday, 17 October  
2007 at 6 pm at the offices of the European Commissioner for Science  
and Research Dr. Janez Potocnik in the European Commission building /  
Berlaymont (11th floor, Rue de La Loi 200, 1040 Brussels).

The exhibition will present the development phases of the ten-year  
project Makrolab (1997-2007), an autonomous communications, research,
working and living unit that focuses its research on  
telecommunications, climate systems and migrations. The final phase  
of the project that is
currently in development within the International Polar Year  
2007-2008 programme will be implemented as a permanent setup on the  
Antarctic and Arctic, where Makrolab will serve as an independent  
transnational art-science station for research.
This is the fourth exhibition at the European Commission by Gallery  
LJU Cosinus BRX, a conceptual gallery established by the Ministry of  
Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, which, in addition to  
artistic spaces, also addresses the domain of science and politics.  
The gallery
was created to present works of art based on topical issues in  
science and technology through art. It highlights successful  
Slovenian artists in this field. The artistic force and aspiration of  
such projects can often serve as an inspiring example for our own  
endeavours.

getting back into the flow of things now - with this, our second regular edition since being back on the air, we aired a stack of tracks that have been waiting, well, virtually forever.  giuseppe ielasi's disc on hapna is so not new anymore that he's already released another disc on hapna.  mykel boyd sent me his disc when i was still living in another country.  toy bizarre's track is from sometime in the 90's.  marcelle deschenes' almost wouldn't play for the dust.  and sebastiane hegarty's collection of sonic scenarios (including vibrating fences and lost children) has been waiting since his mother (featured in this week's introduction) was but a young woman.  but now, at least, they've all got the attention they deserve...

again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition or introduction submissions.  we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest-curated series.  send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below.  if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch!

I've recently been honored with an Ivey Award for my theater sound design
work (the Minneapolis version of a Tony; or is it the other way around?).
The award acknowledges work on two shows with Emigrant Theater:
"Kid-Simple: A Radio Play in the Flesh" by Jordan Harrison, for which I
also performed as a live Foley artist, and "Hunger" by Sheri Wilner.
Thanks to Emigrant and everybody who helped make these shows happen, as we
all share this award I think.

<falte> is methodically based upon a technique invented by the surrealists entitled ?exquisite corpse?. A method by which a collection of words, images or sounds are assembled collectively in sequence, either by following a rule or by delivering and making visible the ?ending? of what has been created previously. This procedure has a resemblance to an old parlor game entitled ?consequences?, in which the players write alternately on a sheet of paper, fold it to conceal part of what they wrote and pass it on for further contribution.

Based on this process a series of compositions by schurer > steinbr?chel was presented in September 2006 as an eight channel surround soundinstallation at the Kunsthaus Zurich, accompanied by a four channel visual contribution by Yves Netzhammer. The version on this CD documents a condensed, slightly more composed and therefore differentiated form of folding.

In the mid-1980's, Rites of Spring emerged from the thriving music community that was centered around Dischord Records in Washington DC. Their sound was raw, dense and emotional. It provided a soundtrack to a generation of veteran punks for whom introspection and renewal were increasingly necessary tools in the ongoing (re)construction of personal and political defiance.

Drink_Deep marks an effort to bridge the two distinct but inter-related milieus of the 80's Dischord era and the more recent practice of electronic minimalism, or microsound, both of which have relied upon aesthetic innovation and a modus operandi that is at once individualized and collaborative. Aside from a piano that simulates a particular chord progression, all of the source material comes from the original R.O.S. tracks whose titles I have had the privilege of retaining. As a whole, these compositions are, most importantly, an expression of the admonition to savor the depths of what life has to offer in the immediate moment, to embrace the paradoxical hazard of living gracefully and deliberately. Herein lies, I would suggest, the continuing relevance of the original music, my interpretations of which are offered out of an enduring inspiration.

Ignaz Schick & Dawid Szczesny met for the first time in 2005 when Dawid was performing with Sofie Loizou in Berlin. Coming both from quite different backgrounds (Hip Hop/Electronica and Noise/Experimental Electro-Acoustics) they decided to collaborate on some recordings. The first session took place "live on radio" without previous rehearsals the first night of Ignaz' three weeks residency at Radio Copernicus in Wroclaw in December 2005. The next very early morning they went into the recording studio and worked on the first tracks. 
In early 2006 they did a short minitour with 3 concerts in Germany and in the summer recorded more material at Dawids house in Wroclaw. In all tracks you can notice a certain jazzy feel, maybe coming from their shared passion for 1960s "jazz noir".

video artist in the NE Ohio area who's work would compliment our
avant-garde sounds for a/v releases and future performances. We are
looking for someone who would be seriously dedicated to working on
collaborative projects with us.

Our music is avant-garde in style that could might described as the following...
ambient / minimal / microsound / experimental / musique concrete

Our sound brings together electronic, acoustic, and field recorded
sources into abstract sound collages. While we both have some
video/visual abilities ourselves we find it difficult to do it all
ourselves and would find it ideal to find a third like minded
individual to collaborate with whose primary focus would be of a
visual nature. We of course would be very interested in crossing the
lines of each others roles and contributing visual ideas and vice
versa with said collaborator.

We are currently working on a full length studio album and would find
it ideal to have a visual contributor to a cd/dvd audio visual release
and to manipulate and mix visuals live at performances as we do with
audio.

:: Network - 20/11/07, call for works ::

A network is any system of interconnected points / locations, nodes,  
which become greater, augmented, than when in isolation.  While  
emphasis is most often placed on the nodes, it is the connections /  
links / lines / flows, the spaces between, the hinterland of the  
network, and their resulting mesh / matrix, which provides the site,  
means and context for the networks ability to transfer and  
transform.  Similarly art can be thought of as a space in-between:

?The work of art occupies a pivotal point between two sets of  
behaviour, the artist?s and the spectator?s.  It is essentially a  
matrix, the substance between.  It exists nether for itself nor by  
itself.? (Ascott, R. 2003, Telematic Embrace)

On November 20th Open Ear  will host an event curated by Garrett  
Lynch (http://www.asquare.org/) entitled Network which will present  
performances on this theme.  Sound and visual artists / groups  
working with networks as a thematic or technical element to their  
work within live performance contexts are invited to contribute to  
the event.  Proposed performances can include the use of networks to  
dynamically generate or enhance performance, to collaboratively  
create a performance through a network, to discuss the nature of  
networks and their impact on society etc.  All proposed performances  
are required to be audio-visual, audio or visual with selection  
preference given to audio-visual works. Performances can last up to a  
maximum of 30 minutes each.

As the event is free we are unable to offer individual payment but  
will provide access to a supply of equipment (please include a list  
of requirements in your proposal and we will attempt to cater for  
this) at the venue, suitable refreshments and possibly accommodation  
if required.  Contributions to the event will be included in the DVD  
of all six events published by the C3U Music Label later in 2008.

Proposals should take the form of a word / pdf / rtf / txt document  
(two pages maximum) with:

1) A description of the work (500 words maximum).
2) Images to give us an idea of the proposed work.
3) A full list of required equipment (please note that the event will  
host several performers so complex configurations involving lengthy  
set-up times will not be catered for).
4) Urls to previous examples of work online.
5) A short bio (200 words maximum).
6) Artist(s) / group / performer(s) name and contact details.

at the University of Music D?sseldorf
is inviting applications for a

PROFESSOR IN MEDIA COMPOSITION (W2)

starting as soon as possible.

Media Composition comprises all forms of music composed and produced  
for specific purposes: advertising, industry, museums, events, film  
and television, computer games, websites, radio plays, audio logos,  
as well as sound design in general.

In accordance with ? 46 HG, applicants are required to have either an  
academic degree in Composition, or documented evidence of excellent  
artistic achievements, demonstrating special artistic ability; broad  
experience in teaching, composing and arranging for international  
productions at the highest artistic (and didactic) levels (both in  
education and original work); proven practical experience with  
orchestral recording sessions for film and broad knowledge in media- 
related orchestration; wide experience in computer-aided production  
environments and their specific circumstances; expertise in  
synchronisation techniques for music and image, and music editing.  
The University is seeking a person fluent in a diverse range of  
musical styles, to be demonstrated by original scores.
Applicants should submit a range of published works in different  
genres; in the case of electronic and acoustic productions for  
ensembles and orchestras, scores should be included where applicable.

In addition to educational abilities, the position requires a strong
commitment to interdisciplinary cooperation, administrative work and  
participation in developing visions for the future of the University.  
The general terms of employment are laid out in ? 46 HG. For first  
time appointees, 3 years? initial contract with optional extension  
(tenure).

ran across Audiopaint, a freeware program which does a kind of additive
synthesis from image files (http://www.nicolasfournel.com/audiopaint.htm).
He created a series of backdrops, on top of which he added beats from drum
machines, guitar, saxophone, trombone, and vocals. The recordings were each
done in a single take through a variety of analog treatments: tape delay,
valve amplifier, pre-1970s speaker cabinets, a Lorenzo organ from the
garbage, and a fuzz pedal collection spanning four decades.

The original versions were remixed in 2007 for the3rd2nd.com. What results
is a range of sounds from electroacoustic evolutions to pleasant processed
settings of acoustic instruments that might even be called delicate and
tender.

In addition to Cullen's three mixes, Weakling and
King<http://the3rd2nd.com/?p=33>and Aln
vs. Cln <http://the3rd2nd.com/?p=34> have delivered remixes. Weakling and
King's track pulls groaning and noisy beats from bew's material, while Aln
vs. Cln's track had "every sound treated digital>analogue>digital to avoid
undue cleanliness."

The Audiopaint guy used to write for an Amiga magazine
(and assuming that he owned one) - and now he's putting out PC only  
software?
Kind of a step backwards I'd say.

The cd I recorded with Lawrence English has been released few days  
ago by the label Phonostatique (www.phonostatiquerecords.com). It's  
title is Merola Shoulders, here the release notes:

It's October 2005 and in an apartment in the heart of Palermo,  
Lawrence English and Domenico Sciajno commence a series of recordings  
that will form the foundation of Merola Shoulders. A reference to the  
iconic Italian singer who performed just meters from the studio  
during the recording sessions, the album sees both musicians delve  
deep into densely textured sonic landscapes - morphing a variety of  
found sounds and concrete elements into a flexing series of  
provocative DSP compositions.

I've contact mic'd the upstairs bedrooms (while the
rest of the family was sleeping) and various parts of
the house, including the windows/backyard.
the idea was to do a live, real-time mix, processing
the sounds of the sleeping family/house, and gradually
separating/ lifting off...first to outdoor sounds,
then to local radio sounds,
longwave...mediumwave...shortwave....then finally to a
live radiotelescope feed.

this idea of a gradual takeoff from a sleeping bed to
deep space is based on a childhood fantasy of mine:
that my bedroom would separate from the rest of the
house and blast off into the cosmos when i was
sleeping...a recent re-discovery of some of harris
burdick's dreamlike magical-realist drawings provided
the final impetus for the piece.

The spnm Shortlist is a group of the UK?s most exciting composers and  
sonic artists. To apply, you submit one work, which can be in any  
style and for any forces and media. If you?re one of up to 30  
composers shortlisted, spnm will offer you performance, professional  
development and promotion opportunities for three years.

Anyone born or resident in the UK and Republic of Ireland can apply.

most exciting new work. We?re not looking for a particular style or  
form. Works can be acoustic or electroacoustic, installations or  
pieces for live performance. They can be for diffusion, for solo  
instruments, chamber forces, orchestra, non-western instruments, for  
music theatre group, etc.

:: Network - 20/11/07, call for works ::

A network is any system of interconnected points / locations, nodes,  
which become greater, augmented, than when in isolation.  While  
emphasis is most often placed on the nodes, it is the connections /  
links / lines / flows, the spaces between, the hinterland of the  
network, and their resulting mesh / matrix, which provides the site,  
means and context for the networks ability to transfer and  
transform.  Similarly art can be thought of as a space in-between:

?The work of art occupies a pivotal point between two sets of  
behaviour, the artist?s and the spectator?s.  It is essentially a  
matrix, the substance between.  It exists nether for itself nor by  
itself.? (Ascott, R. 2003, Telematic Embrace)

On November 20th Open Ear  will host an event curated by Garrett  
Lynch (http://www.asquare.org/) entitled Network which will present  
performances on this theme.  Sound and visual artists / groups  
working with networks as a thematic or technical element to their  
work within live performance contexts are invited to contribute to  
the event.  Proposed performances can include the use of networks to  
dynamically generate or enhance performance, to collaboratively  
create a performance through a network, to discuss the nature of  
networks and their impact on society etc.  All proposed performances  
are required to be audio-visual, audio or visual with selection  
preference given to audio-visual works. Performances can last up to a  
maximum of 30 minutes each.

As the event is free we are unable to offer individual payment but  
will provide access to a supply of equipment (please include a list  
of requirements in your proposal and we will attempt to cater for  
this) at the venue, suitable refreshments and possibly accommodation  
if required.  Contributions to the event will be included in the DVD  
of all six events published by the C3U Music Label later in 2008.

Proposals should take the form of a word / pdf / rtf / txt document  
(two pages maximum) with:

1) A description of the work (500 words maximum).
2) Images to give us an idea of the proposed work.
3) A full list of required equipment (please note that the event will  
host several performers so complex configurations involving lengthy  
set-up times will not be catered for).
4) Urls to previous examples of work online.
5) A short bio (200 words maximum).
6) Artist(s) / group / performer(s) name and contact details.

Please email proposals as attachments (not pasted into the email) to

(GMT), Friday 02/11/07.

'Spectral Space' is a new computer music piece focused on extending  
density in audio material. In our age of media-overload the public  
has adapted to this condition by enlarging their ability to  
simultaneously consume multiple streams of information.
The trend of 'content density' is evidenced in both visual and  
musical art-forms such as music-videos, television advertising, video  
games and sample-based music such hip hop and electronica. The  
omnipresent din of our media culture provides a security blanket for  
many: when noise is present, we feel at ease; when it stops, we feel  
unease.

In this paradoxical development of our cognitive apparatus we are now  
better able to assimilate more information at one time and decode its  
meaning. 'Spectral Space' is an exercise in increasing the amount of  
audio data in my work and how I can build a foreground/mid-ground/ 
background sound-field through which sounds glint, shimmer, collide  
and implode within the fabric of noise.

Kim Cascone has a long history involving electronic music: he  
received his formal training in electronic music at the Berklee  
College of Music in the early 1970's, and in 1976 continued his  
studies with Dana McCurdy at the New School in New York City. In the  
1980's, after moving to San Francisco and gaining experience as an  
audio technician, Cascone worked with David Lynch as Assistant Music  
Editor on both Twin Peaks and Wild at Heart. Cascone left the film  
industry in 1991 to concentrate on Silent Records, a label that he  
founded in 1986, transforming it into the U.S.'s premier electronic  
music label. At the height of Silent's success, he sold the company  
in early 1996 to pursue a career as a sound designer and went to work  
for Thomas Dolby's company Headspace as a sound designer and  
composer. After a two year stint at Headspace he worked for Staccato  
Systems as the Director of Content where he oversaw sound design  
using algorithmic synthesis for video games. Since 1984, Kim has  
released more than 30 albums of electronic music and has recorded/ 
performed with Merzbow, Keith Rowe, Tony Conrad, Scanner, John  
Tilbury, and Pauline Oliveros among others.
