Deadline extended Message-ID: <20071102030300.k99xcdf5og0ws8w0@login.hostmonster.com> Radio Orchestra Workshop at a=v#2 Festival. Munich Conductors: Sarah Washington, Knut Aufermann Date: November 20. to 24.11.07 (18.00: 21.00) Location: Kunstarkaden, Sparkassenstr. 3 New registration deadline: November 10. 2007 Support: Department of Arts and Culture of Munich Moderation: Natalia Borissova Goal: A musical performance of the workshop participants using modified radios as instruments in a live public Jam-session 24.11.07 from 20.00 - 22.00 Description: a). Radio Hacking (Sarah Washington) The radio has a history as a musical instrument spanning the decades since John Cage discovered its unpredictable noises as a source for chance operations. In this workshop we will look at the insides of portable transistor radios and find out if we can further develop the possibilities of the radio as a musical instrument. Instead of thinking of it as a passive machine for receiving radio programmes we will use very simple techniques to change the electronic circuits of the radio into a fascinating noise making instrument. Everybody will be able to use their own individually modified radio as a musical instrument in the second part of the workshop. b). Radio Orchestra (Knut Aufermann) A workshop for conducted improvisation. The goal of the workshop is the formation of an orchestra of electronic musicians and to perform live on the last day of the workshop /24th November/. We will explore many possibilities of using the modified radios as a collective sound instrument for improvised music making. The workshop will introduce different techniques of conducting the group with all the participants being encouraged to bring in ideas for pieces and to experience conducting the group. There will also be access to several mini radio transmitters which allow for the synchronization of the radios. Participants profile: The participants should be keen to dismantle radios and take part in a collective musical performance. No prior musical or electronics knowledge is needed. Everyone can turn up to the workshop, not just technical whizz kids or programmers. This way we bring everyone together - the technological \'haves\' and \'have-nots\', so to speak. The participants should be able to take part in all workshop sessions /20th to 24th November/ Requirements: Each participant should bring a working, battery powered, portable transistor radio (older models are preferable, tuning dial is essential) that can be taken apart and modified. We will provide the tools and components for the modification plus a limited number of radios to replace unusable or broken ones. They could also be pre-1980s radios. They just should not be too modern, as the circuitry is more restrictive and therefore boring... Any junk shop or flea market usually has plenty of these. You could find one in an attic or garage of a relative. Having more of them is the key, as some work better than others. plenty of batteries are needed to power them - they MUST be battery operable to prevent bending mishaps! Further info & registration: http://aa-vv.org/?av_02010101 Language: The workshop language is english. Accommodation: We can suggest an accommodation for about 18-32 euro Fees: The cost of the workshop is 35 euro. For students, female artists and those who are taking part in the second workshop - 30 euro. + 15 Euro - the cost of materials . About facilitators: Sarah Washington is an instrument-builder, improvising musician and radio artist who works all over Europe on varied projects. She helped to set up the radio station Resonance104.4fm in London and has been commissioned to make a series of radio works for the Tate Modern. http://mobile-radio.net Knut Aufermann is a musician and radio artist working across Europe. He is a member of the London Improvisers Orchestra and co-founder of the European radio art network Radia. Together with Sarah Washington he performs in the radio feedback and circuit bending duo Tonic Train. http://knut.klingt.org Please, forward to whom it may concern From m_sound at hotmail.com Fri Nov 2 13:59:05 2007 From: m_sound at hotmail.com (Matteo Milani) Date: Fri, 2 Nov 2007 18:59:05 +0100 Subject: [Microsound-announce] U.S.O. - Live Electronics In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Matteo Milani and Federico Placidi (Unidentified Sound Object) will be online Sunday 23rd December 2007 for a live gig via Mogulus, the groundbreaking broadcast network. In our age of media-overload the public has adapted to this condition by enlarging their ability to simultaneously consume multiple streams of information. The trend of 'content density' is evidenced in both visual and musical art-forms such as music-videos, television advertising, video games and sample-based music such hip hop and electronica. The omnipresent din of our media culture provides a security blanket for many: when noise is present, we feel at ease; when it stops, we feel unease. In this paradoxical development of our cognitive apparatus we are now better able to assimilate more information at one time and decode its meaning. 'Spectral Space' is an exercise in increasing the amount of audio data in my work and how I can build a foreground/mid-ground/ background sound-field through which sounds glint, shimmer, collide and implode within the fabric of noise. Kim Cascone has a long history involving electronic music: he received his formal training in electronic music at the Berklee College of Music in the early 1970's, and in 1976 continued his studies with Dana McCurdy at the New School in New York City. In the 1980's, after moving to San Francisco and gaining experience as an audio technician, Cascone worked with David Lynch as Assistant Music Editor on both Twin Peaks and Wild at Heart. Cascone left the film industry in 1991 to concentrate on Silent Records, a label that he founded in 1986, transforming it into the U.S.'s premier electronic music label. At the height of Silent's success, he sold the company in early 1996 to pursue a career as a sound designer and went to work for Thomas Dolby's company Headspace as a sound designer and composer. After a two year stint at Headspace he worked for Staccato Systems as the Director of Content where he oversaw sound design using algorithmic synthesis for video games. Since 1984, Kim has released more than 30 albums of electronic music and has recorded/ performed with Merzbow, Keith Rowe, Tony Conrad, Scanner, John Tilbury, and Pauline Oliveros among others. Deadline: November 10. Message-ID: <20071106040758.sncxoaxm4gwo4cc8@login.hostmonster.com> Radio Orchestra Workshop at a=v#2 Festival. Munich Conductors: Sarah Washington, Knut Aufermann Date: November 20. to 24.11.07 (18.00: 21.00) Location: Kunstarkaden, Sparkassenstr. 3, Munich New registration deadline: November 10. 2007 Support: Department of Arts and Culture of Munich Moderation: Natalia Borissova info(at)aa-vv.org www.aa-vv.org Goal: A musical performance of the workshop participants using modified radios as instruments in a live public Jam-session 24.11.07 from 20.00 - 22.00 Description: a). This way we bring everyone together - the technological 'haves' and 'have-nots', so to speak. Requirements: Each participant should bring a working, battery powered, portable transistor radio (older models are preferable, tuning dial is essential) that can be taken apart and modified. We will provide the tools and components for the modification plus a limited number of radios to replace unusable or broken ones. They could also be pre-1980s radios. Having more of them is the key, as some work better than others. plenty of batteries are needed to power them - they MUST be battery operable to prevent bending mishaps! The participants should be able to take part in a final live public Jam-session 24.11.07 from 20.00 - 22.00 Language: English. Fees: The cost of the workshop is 35/30 euro + 15 euro - the cost of materials. Further info & registration: http://aa-vv.org/?av_020101 About facilitators: Sarah Washington is an instrument-builder, improvising musician and radio artist who works all over Europe on varied projects. The goal of the series is to offer a platform to local and international, novice and experienced artists. Coupled to a performance, OKNO organizes one or several Performance Lab sessions. In these sessions, either an OKNO member or one of the invited artists work with local artists in an informal, hands-on way to research the aesthetical, conceptual and technological aspects of new media performances. Symbiosis #1 Jeroen Uytendaele (BE) As a Master in Art Science student in Den Hague, Jeroen Uytendaele extends his experiments in sender-receiver feedback systems. By integrating old fashioned, discarded technology with contemporary digital techniques, he searches for new forms which are neither nostalgic, nor blinded by cutting edge hype. Isjtar will join in on the fun for a collaborative performance. Shelbatra Jashari (BE, KS) Double laureate of Courtisane festival Shelbatra Jashari moves away from her usual medium film to the more abstract sound. For this performance, she fuses her newly obtained skills in algorithms and synthesis. Generative rythms and textures are the focus of the performance. Several Performance Lab sessions by Isjtar around synthesis and electronic music take on the form of assistence to Shelbatra to help her in this transition. THANK YOU! framework - phonography/field recording; contextual and decontextualized sound activity presented by patrick mcginley this edition of framework:afield was produced in oxford, uk by felicity ford. for more information see http://www.littlesongbox.co.uk. felicity says: This edition of framework features a range of different approaches to exploring the domestic soundscape and has been curated by Felicity Ford, AKA the littlesongbox. http://www.myspace.com/littlesongboxmusic http://www.littlesongbox.co.uk http://knitaluscious.blogspot.com http://www.myspace.com/themissabilityradioshow This show I hope illustrates some of the issues/ideas/themes around domestic field-recordings. Strategies for capturing our everyday lives with sound range from detailed interviews about daily tasks, as created by Kayla Bell and Claudia Figueiredo for their graduation event - 'Mundane Appreciation Week' - right through to electronically manipulated recordings made from rooms with 'additional effects to make something a bit more listenable,' (Domestic Hiss.) Many of the recordings found in this selection began life as the sound element in an installation; Amy Vickery's 'Stairs' was installed in a brown package at the top of her stairs in an exhibition she did in her home, during her graduating art show. Likewise, her '4 London Road' piece was originally the soundtrack to a series of still photographs of domestic locations. Suzanne Williams and Dio Mock made several soundtracks to be installed in an old Jam Factory in huge mason jars; (the speakers were immersed in jam.) Although their recordings are largely taken from outdoors, I think the domestic context of the jam jar and the overall comment about the relationships between locale and home make 'Canal Jam' a relevent inclusion here. And this relates also to the work of John Zeman whose piece 'An evening at Home' was the second piece for the 'What's For Dinner?' exhibit at the Museum of Domestic Design. According to their promotional material 'It depicted the preparation of a meal and the enjoyment of it, in contrast to its counterpart, which was about the journey to obtain it. This piece reflected the warmth and comfort of being at home, the care that goes into a meal, and enjoyment that comes from sharing that meal with the ones you love." This edition of framework also features several excerpts of work from Aeron and Alejandra, (The Lucky Kitchen Label) ranging from the found-sound/manipulated sound/musical collages of 'The Shed Record' and 'Christmas in the Empire' to their 'Family Album' in which they asked people they knew to send in recordings - like sonic snapshots - of their families. With 'The Shed Record' in particular, the music/field-recording line is continually blurred, as we hear many moments when Aeron's Grandmother is singing and playing the piano. This confusion about domestic environment/music will be familiar to anyone who has grown up in an environment where music practise, piano-playing and other 'musical' activity is part of the soundscape; Joseph Young's 'Family Album' looks at this in more detail, while the Kitchen Sink Dharma recording ' Dusting a Piano' explores the less glamourous side of growing up with instruments in the house. The end of a Diane Cluck song is also featured in relation to this point because it is interesting that she has allowed her real life to enter the normally sealed recording environment. The phone rings, she picks it up and stops playing the song. Are we listening to her everyday life or to her song or are they just the same thing? It is Peter Cusack's recording, however, 'Onions frying in my flat' from 'Your Favourite London Sounds' that really needs to be noted here; the cataloguing of detail from people's everyday lives that underpinned the whole process of making 'Your Favourite London Sounds' is probably the thing I heard which got me interested in the idea of the domestic soundscape in the first place. again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition or introduction submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of our guest-curated series. send proposals or material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! framework bp17 27910 perruel france framework at talk21.com 11.11.07 (this edition will be available online until 18.11.07) Tracklisting: Joseph Young - Family Album / Domestic Hiss - Bathroom / Bell & Figueiredo - Mundane Appreciation Interviews http://www.archive.org/details/JosephYoungTheFamilyAlbum http://www.archive.org/details/domestic_hiss http://www.myspace.com/mundaneappreciation Suzanne Williams & Dio Mock - Canal Jam / Bell & Figueiredo - Mundane Appreciation Interviews / Felicity Ford (the littlesongbox) - The Perfect Cup of Tea http://www.myspace.com/majamoxford Peter Cusack - Onions Frying in my flat / John Zeman - An evening at home / Kitchen Sink Dharma - Cooking Omelettes at home http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Cusack http://isnoone.org/ http://www.archive.org/details/Kitchen_Sink_Dharma Kitchen Sink Dharma - Nothing cooking / Bell & Figueiredo - Mundane Appreciation Interviews / Gallagho Kitchen Soundpack - The Freesounds Project http://freesound.iua.upf.edu Peter Cusak - Keys in my door / Joe Young - Family Album / Amy Vickery - Stairs http://www.myspace.com/amyvickeryartist Amy Vickery - 4 London Road / Alejandra & Aeron - The Shed Record / Domestic Hiss - Kitchen http://www.luckykitchen.com/aa_works/aacv.html Felicity Ford (the littlesongbox) - Washing machine, telephone pickup / Alejandra & Aeron - The Shed Record / Kitchen Sink Dharma - Dusting a Piano Joseph Young - Family Album / Alejandra & Aeron - Family Album / Alejandra & Aeron - Christmas in the empire http://www.fallt.com/empire Magali Babin - Chuchotement / Felicity Ford (the littlesongbox) - Telephone pick up and telephone / Felicity Ford (the littlesongbox) - The Speaking Clock http://www.archive.org/details/nta012 http://www.sonus.ca/curators/norman/babin.html Joceline Colvert - Creaking Floorboards / Alejandra & Aeron - Family Album / Tim Coster - Liz's alarm clock http://www.myspace.com/timcoster Diane Cluck - taking a phonecall halfway through a song! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The ?zero dollar ?laptop is ?widely ?available to ?individuals in ?the developed ?world. ?It's ?also ?available to ?businesses, ?governmental organisations ?and ?NGOs. ?It's ? also ?available ?in ?the ?developing world. Distribution is ramping up. The zero dollar laptop comes in a variety of specifications. The current typical specification of ?the zero dollar laptop in the UK is around 500mHz, ?with 256mB RAM, a 10 gigabyte ?hard disk, a network card, a CD-ROM, a USB port and a screen capable of displaying at least 800?600 pixels in ?16-bit colour. Many zero dollar ?laptops are better specified. (Its close cousin, ?the zero dollar desktop, typically runs at 1000mHz or faster.) The zero dollar laptop is constantly ?being upgraded - so by next year its specification will be even more powerful. The ? zero ?dollar ? laptop ?is ? powered ?with ? free, ? open ?source software. Users can get involved as deeply as they want - the software packages available ?include easy ?to use graphical ?applications, more complex ?professional ?applications, ? and ?expert ?level ?programming languages. Free software upgrades for the zero dollar laptop are constantly being made available, from a huge variety of software producers. The ?zero ?dollar ?laptop ? is ?not ?intended ?simply ?for ?multimedia entertainment. Though it can an educational playground, it can also be a genuinely useful production platform. The ?zero ? dollar ?laptop ?allows ? kids ?to ?learn ?and ? adults ?to produce. (Only when people are ?able to use computers to produce their own ?data does information ?communication technology ?become genuinely empowering.) The zero dollar laptop has already been distributed. (You weren't told about it at the time of distribution.) Individuals, businesses ?and non-profit ?organisations can all ?have a say ?in how ?the ?zero dollar ?laptop ?is rolled ?out ?in their ?local area. ?It's not up ?to government ?think-tanks, multinational ?NGOs or national policy boards. The ?zero ?dollar ?laptop ? is ?available ?to ?individuals, ?education organisations, NGOs and businesses alike. The carbon footprint of the zero dollar laptop is zero. You, as an individual, may already own a zero dollar laptop. What's it doing? Sitting on your shelf, unused, because you've already upgraded? Your employer ?or your school ?may own a ?large number of ?zero dollar laptops. What ? are ?they ? doing? ?Are ? they ?getting ? recycled ?responsibly (i.e. destroyed) by the company ?that supplied them? (That's often the company ?that just ?happens to ?be ?supplying the ?next generation ?of laptops.) Perhaps surprisingly, you ?may not know how to ?install or operate the zero dollar laptop. You may never have installed a free, open source operating system. You may never have installed any operating system. Nowadays it's quite easy. You can ?download ?a ?full ?version ?of ?the GNU/Linux operating system appropriate for the specification ?of ?your zero dollar laptop for free. It's entirely legal. Many versions of GNU/Linux are user-friendly. ?There are lots of ?help resources online, and there are likely to be local ?people ?who'll ?be happy to give you advice. You may be unaware of lightweight window-managers that use memory more efficiently. You may never ?have used powerful, compatible free office and productivity software. ?It may surprise you to ?discover that free software can be better than software you can buy. You may ?be reluctant ?to invest time, ?of which ?you may only ?have a little, rather than invest money - of which you may have plenty. Think about the longer-term consequences: buy software and you'll have to pay again and again. ?Invest time learning about free software, and you'll never have to pay for software again. For the ?sake of the ?planet, and ?for the sake ?of a fair, ?just, and cohesive ?society, isn't ?it about ?time you ?learned? Then ?maybe you could teach someone else. You may ask, ?'Why isn't someone doing something to ?roll out the zero dollar ?laptop'? ?In ?developed-world ?economies ?and ?cultures ?we're familiar ?with ? centralised ?solutions. ?We're ? less ?familiar ?with localised, decentralised, do-it-yourself solutions. In this case, that 'someone' is you. Decentralised solutions like the zero dollar laptop may not seem to be as ?efficient ?as ?centralised ?solutions. However, ?efficiency ?isn't everything. ?Solutions ?of ?this ? character ?are ?more ?robust, ?more responsive to ?local circumstances, ?greener, more flexible, ?and they encourage local skill development and independence. You may have to spend ?unpaid time learning about and implementing the distribution of ?a few zero dollar ?laptops in your ?area. Think about the contacts you'll make and ?the skills you'll learn. Think about the skills you'll ?help to develop, the ?lives you may ?transform, the fun you'll have. The emergence ?of the zero dollar ?laptop as a ?key computing platform for empowering individuals, stimulating creativity, overcoming poverty and ?enriching our ?shared culture ?is entirely ?feasible ?without any additional research, design, or manufacture. We already have all the tools we ?need - all we need to manufacture is the will to act locally; all we need to replace is the software on our hard drives; all we need to develop is the content of our minds. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< best Jake ________________________________________________________________________ Email and AIM finally together. Waar :: OKNO (2nd floor) Koolmijnenkaai 30/34 ? From September 2007 to April 2008 Open Ear will curate a series six inter-disciplinary, free, themed events at Canterbury Christ Church University, Broadstairs Campus. All events will take place from 8pm till late and include a selection of performances, installations, videos and inter-disciplinary work from invited artists for the event or selected through calls for works. Later in 2008 a DVD of all six events will be released on the C3U Music Label. The dates, themes and curator for each event are as follows: Interference - 16/10/07, curated by Paul Adams Network - 20/11/07, curated by Garrett Lynch (see further details below) Memory - 11/12/07, curated by Matt Wright Noise - 05/02/08, curated by Paul Adams Cinema - 11/03/08, curated by Garrett Lynch Speed - 22/04/08, curated by Matt Wright :: Network - 20/11/07 :: A network is any system of interconnected points / locations, nodes, which become greater, augmented, than when in isolation. While emphasis is most often placed on the nodes, it is the connections / links / lines / flows, the spaces between, the hinterland of the network, and their resulting mesh / matrix, which provides the site, means and context for the networks ability to transfer and transform. Similarly art can be thought of as a space in-between: ?The work of art occupies a pivotal point between two sets of behaviour, the artist?s and the spectator?s. It is essentially a matrix, the substance between. It exists nether for itself nor by itself.? (Ascott, R. 2003, Telematic Embrace) On November 20th Open Ear will host an event curated by Garrett Lynch (http://www.asquare.org/) entitled Network which will present performances on this theme. Sound and visual artists / groups working with networks as a thematic or technical element to their work within live performance contexts will contribute to the event. Performances will include the use of networks to dynamically generate or enhance performance, to collaboratively create a performance through a network, to discuss the nature of networks and their impact on society etc. All performances will be audio or visual works (including any combination therein) of up to 30 minutes duration each. The line-up for the evening will be as follows: Paul Adams (http://www.myspace.com/mrpauladams) John Wild: Invisible Geographies 50MHz-6000MHz - The Conduit (http:// johnwild.info/) Matt Wright (http://www.matt-wright.co.uk/) Pascal Bouchet Asselah: In the night, the light (Dans la nuit, la lumi?re) (http://www.signalsurbruit.org/) Garrett Lynch (http://www.asquare.org/) Cracktux: Noise Garden (http://www.yesyesnono.co.uk/ & http:// sonicvariable.goto10.org/) Tim Long: Relay of Joy :: The Venue :: Canterbury Christ Church Broadstairs Campus, situated on the east coast of Kent, England approximately 30 minutes from Canterbury, opened in 2000 with a wide selection of higher education courses. ?
